- 0:00Speaker 1: Sweat back at caffe or with the come on out
- 0:05Speaker 1: here at caffee or we're in Manchester.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Most of our want to work.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I want to work like art. Let my brother do
- 0:15Speaker 1: it all.
- 0:15Speaker 2: There you go. Uh, we're just past the midway point
- 0:18Speaker 2: of the season. Offensively, you've been fine. Field goal percentages
- 0:23Speaker 2: over fifty percent, you lead the Big East and three
- 0:26Speaker 2: point shooting among the tops of the country percentage wise
- 0:28Speaker 2: at forty one percent. Forcing a lot of turnovers. What
- 0:34Speaker 2: needs tweaking at this point that you can that you
- 0:38Speaker 2: yourself can you know, I don't know if you can
- 0:41Speaker 2: control it because you're not playing, but you know, help
- 0:44Speaker 2: help your team along to get better as you get
- 0:47Speaker 2: towards March. Because you know, even I've had this conversation
- 0:50Speaker 2: with Rebecca, you know you're building towards March all the time.
- 0:53Speaker 2: It doesn't matter who you pe like.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you're your brain long term is on March.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Short term, it's on every day of practice. Okay. So
- 1:10Speaker 1: the trick is not to get caught up in your
- 1:12Speaker 1: long term thinking and forget that there's things we got
- 1:18Speaker 1: to get better at today and tomorrow and the next day.
- 1:22Speaker 1: So publicly, since this is a radio show, I would say,
- 1:27Speaker 1: there's absolutely nothing we can get better at. Right now,
- 1:31Speaker 1: we're a number ten one team in the country. We're undefeated.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Every one of my players is going to be First
- 1:36Speaker 1: Team American and we're good. So that's the other danger.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You got to make sure you don't fall into that
- 1:44Speaker 1: just because we're undefeated, just because everybody says you're number
- 1:47Speaker 1: one in the country and you're leading the country in
- 1:49Speaker 1: this many different things. There's things that we do on
- 1:54Speaker 1: film that when we watched it on film and you
- 1:58Speaker 1: break it down for the play and you showed them
- 2:02Speaker 1: there are ten minutes worth of video from let's say
- 2:10Speaker 1: the Creton game where we could show something that if
- 2:13Speaker 1: it doesn't get fixed by March, it's going to be
- 2:16Speaker 1: a real problem. And last year it's the same messages,
- 2:21Speaker 1: but it took until middle of February before we fixed it.
- 2:26Speaker 1: We eventually fixed it. So yeah, there's things, you know,
- 2:30Speaker 1: like why would we throw a pass over there when
- 2:33Speaker 1: there's three guys guarding that guy and there's nobody guarding
- 2:36Speaker 1: that guy. So it's like making better decisions. You know,
- 2:40Speaker 1: here comes this guy coming to screen and now we
- 2:44Speaker 1: have a choice. We can either stay with our man
- 2:48Speaker 1: we could switch, you take mine, I take yours, or
- 2:52Speaker 1: we can both go with that guy and leave this
- 2:54Speaker 1: guy wide open, and this guy makes an open three pointer.
- 2:57Speaker 1: So you know, there's things that we do this wise
- 3:01Speaker 1: that you're always working on every single day, you know.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And we've got some people to make great decisions, but
- 3:08Speaker 1: we also got people that try to make a great
- 3:11Speaker 1: play because they want to make a great play. And
- 3:16Speaker 1: a hard part of a coach is trying to convince
- 3:18Speaker 1: people that it's okay to hit a single, and then
- 3:21Speaker 1: that guy hits a single, and then that guy hits
- 3:24Speaker 1: a single, and then that guy hits a single and
- 3:25Speaker 1: we score. These guys want to hit a grand Slam
- 3:28Speaker 1: on every path sometimes and it's not really the best
- 3:32Speaker 1: way to play basketball trying to, you know, make great plays.
- 3:38Speaker 1: But like somebody like Blanca, Like if you were wide
- 3:42Speaker 1: open and Blanca just went like this and threw it
- 3:44Speaker 1: to you and you scored, she'd be like, that's boring.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Why should I do that. I should dribble around all
- 3:49Speaker 1: these chairs and then not look and throw it to
- 3:51Speaker 1: you and I would feel good. And then if the
- 3:56Speaker 1: other guy stole it, you would look at me like
- 3:57Speaker 1: what I mean It's not like they're on purpose doing
- 4:03Speaker 1: some things that need to be fixed. It's just in
- 4:05Speaker 1: their mind, they're trying to make a great play, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and that's what you know, that's that's that's fine. But
- 4:13Speaker 1: there's a fine line between you know, swinging for defenses
- 4:18Speaker 1: all the time and striking out and just get the
- 4:20Speaker 1: battle on the ball and it's advanced to runner.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, we had ash Ashelin. She had on the post
- 4:25Speaker 2: game show the other day. She had four threes and
- 4:29Speaker 2: she was, you know, excited to see the ball going
- 4:30Speaker 2: to the hoop from three point land. She was disappointed though
- 4:33Speaker 2: she didn't get a rebound. It's one of the first
- 4:35Speaker 2: time I think this year she didn't get a rebound.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Certainly offensive rebounds. I think all but two games now
- 4:40Speaker 2: she's got at least one offensive rebound. She's been really
- 4:43Speaker 2: good in that department this year.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, a lot of times rebounding people think
- 4:55Speaker 1: that rebounding is a fun of size and it's actually not.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You know, rebounding is a little bit of technique, Okay,
- 5:10Speaker 1: a lot of toughness, physical toughness that it's the balls
- 5:16Speaker 1: up on the rim and either me or you are
- 5:17Speaker 1: going to get the ball, and some guys are just
- 5:20Speaker 1: tougher than others on every team, including ours. All Right,
- 5:24Speaker 1: we got guys on our team. If it's me and
- 5:25Speaker 1: you for a rebound, I know we're going to get.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And we got guys on our team. It fits me
- 5:29Speaker 1: and you for real, I know the other guy's going
- 5:31Speaker 1: to get just the way it is. So it's technique,
- 5:35Speaker 1: a little bit of technique, lots of really physical toughness
- 5:41Speaker 1: and like a sense of awareness. Okay, like the guy's
- 5:47Speaker 1: going to shoot a three and you run underneath the basket,
- 5:52Speaker 1: and the only rebound you get is if it goes in.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Because if the guy's shooting the three and he misses,
- 5:57Speaker 1: the ball hits the ram, it's probably going to end
- 5:59Speaker 1: up out here somewhere. So it's just awareness of where's
- 6:04Speaker 1: the ball going. And like Jamelle Elliott's what five ten,
- 6:07Speaker 1: five eleven, she was only the second player ever to
- 6:10Speaker 1: get a thousand rebounds for US. Rebecca was the first.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So it's got nothing to do with size. So Ash
- 6:15Speaker 1: is active. She runs around. You know, she's all over
- 6:18Speaker 1: the place. You know, sometimes I don't know where she's going,
- 6:21Speaker 1: but she's running around all over the place. And we
- 6:24Speaker 1: made a concerted effort. We said, listen, we need to
- 6:26Speaker 1: get We need to get more people on the offensive boards.
- 6:29Speaker 1: We need to offensive rebound more because the best players
- 6:32Speaker 1: in the world mishlf their shots. Okay, you shoot fifty
- 6:36Speaker 1: percent from the floor, you're a Hall of Famer. So
- 6:38Speaker 1: the other half, whoever controls the majority of the other
- 6:42Speaker 1: half most times, wins the game and ash takes it series.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And some of our big guys that you know they
- 6:50Speaker 1: can play. No, you guys never thrown me the ball,
- 6:52Speaker 1: so shure we do. We throw it at the rim.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Go get it. It's a pass to you.
- 6:59Speaker 2: You just have to work to go get They just
- 7:00Speaker 2: got to work your butt off to go get it. Yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 2: all right, we'll take a break, come back with more
- 7:05Speaker 2: of Gina. We're live at Cafe Or in Manchester. It's
- 7:08Speaker 2: the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show on Learfield. Stay with us.
