- 0:00This is a Tabernacle tidbit, a bite sized Tabernacle talk of 5
- 0:05minutes or less to help you get through your day when you only
- 0:09have a little bit of time. We hope this helps you know
- 0:11Christ groan His Word and show His love to others.
- 0:14Let's get started. Hello and welcome back to
- 0:18Tabernacle Tidbits. Today we are in Second Timothy
- 0:20chapter 4 and verse #14 and this is the apostle Paul.
- 0:26He's writing, if you will, kind of his last will and testament
- 0:30to his son in the faith, Timothy.
- 0:32And as he's writing to him, he wants Timothy to watch out for
- 0:37one particular person in Timothy's journey.
- 0:41Verse #14 Paul says this Alexander the coppersmith did
- 0:45great harm to me. The Lord will repay him
- 0:49according to his works. Paul in his letters doesn't
- 0:56often name a particular individual as being problematic.
- 1:01However, he does it several times in his letters to Timothy
- 1:05that as there is a very pastoral kind of friendship and
- 1:10relationship between these two men, that Paul planted this
- 1:14church in Ephesus that now Timothy is a pastor at.
- 1:18Paul wants Timothy to know sometimes you have to name names
- 1:22and to say this is a person that is not walking with the Lord and
- 1:27it's evident through how they are interacting with their
- 1:30spiritual leadership. Now are spiritual leaders always
- 1:35right? Absolutely not.
- 1:36Galatians 2 you have Paul telling Peter that he is wrong
- 1:41in shying away from being around the Christian Gentiles just
- 1:48because the Jewish believers from Jerusalem had come up to
- 1:52the church at Antioch and and Peter hid himself away from the
- 1:56Christian Gentiles so that the Jewish believers wouldn't be
- 1:59like, hey, why are you hanging out with these, you know,
- 2:02Gentiles, you should only be with the Jews.
- 2:05And it says that Paul withstood Peter to the face because he was
- 2:08to be blamed. He says this is not how the
- 2:10gospel shapes our relationships. So there there are times in
- 2:16which perhaps spiritual leaders might need to be corrected.
- 2:20But can I tell you that is predominantly when it has to do
- 2:24with sin evil not I would have done something different and as
- 2:31opposed to that here in this verse, it says Alexander the
- 2:34coppersmith did great harm to me and he describes how Alexander
- 2:41did that and we'll look at this more tomorrow says he strongly
- 2:45opposed our words that those that resist the the teaching and
- 2:52the direction of their spiritual leaders.
- 2:54That is not a safe healthy place to be.
- 2:57Now how could you say that? Doesn't this just, you know,
- 3:01kind of circle the wagons? It can be.
- 3:04If I am saying, hey, it doesn't matter what God's Word says, I
- 3:09say this. But when we are pointing to the
- 3:11Word of God and saying, hey, this is what we need to do, this
- 3:15is where we need to go, then for you and I as Christian
- 3:18believers, we have to follow our spiritual leaders in those
- 3:23instances that we don't insist on our own way.
- 3:27Instead, we follow, if you will, following Hebrews 13 verses 7
- 3:33and 17. We obey and submit to those that
- 3:36have the spiritual rule over us because they are going to give
- 3:40an account for how they let our souls.
- 3:43And Scripture says they can either do that with joy, because
- 3:46like we listened to them and followed what they said, hey,
- 3:49here's what the Bible says and we followed, or they can do it
- 3:51with sadness, with grief. And the writer of Hebrews 13
- 3:55tells us that that would be unprofitable for us.
- 3:59And here Paul is, if you will, giving an account to Timothy
- 4:04about Alexander the coppersmith. And he's saying with grief that
- 4:10Alexander the coppersmith was not a person that followed and
- 4:13believed and obeyed the word of God and the and the way that
- 4:17Paul is leading the church there in Ephesus.
- 4:19Instead, he says he did great harm to me.
- 4:23May we not be those that cause harm or grief to our spiritual
- 4:29leaders. I'll speak candidly right now as
- 4:32a pastor, it is rough facing Satan every single day.
- 4:39Satan hates believers. He hates pastors.
- 4:42I think I've mentioned it before, Jesus said in John 10,
- 4:44strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter.
- 4:48And that's certainly true within a local church as well.
- 4:51So it's hard fighting Satan. It's hard trying to convince a a
- 4:55world that is ruled by Satan that there is a God that loves
- 5:00them and has a plan for their life.
- 5:02And as we try and call the spiritually dead to life through
- 5:05the power of the Holy Spirit, that's tough.
- 5:08But it's even tougher when those that are supposed to be on the
- 5:11same team as you are rejecting, you know, rejecting your
- 5:17leadership or, or maligning or slandering.
- 5:21That's a bad thing. That should never be something
- 5:23that we're doing as the people of God here.
- 5:26Alexander did harm to Paul, and he says the Lord will repay him
- 5:31according to his works. This reminds me of what Paul
- 5:34said in Romans 12. Don't seek vengeance for
- 5:37yourself, but instead turn it over to the Lord, because the
- 5:40Lord said I will repay. And in our moments where we felt
- 5:46wronged by others, may we rely on the fact that God is just and
- 5:50God will punish those who deserve it.
- 5:53Let our part be to love as He's loved.
- 5:56Thanks for tuning in.
