- 0:07The New York Giants faced Green Bay Packers for the 1961 NFL Championship at New City Stadium in Wisconsin on December 31, 1961.
- 0:17The Packers were led by third-year coach Vince Lombardi.
- 0:21Green Bay was coming off a championship loss to the Eagles in 1960
- 0:25and marched through the 1961 NFL regular season with an 11-3 record thanks to the arm of 27-year-old quarterback Bart Starr.
- 0:34The Giants were led by veteran quarterback Y.A. Tittle and managed by first-year head coach Ali Sherman.
- 0:40After two straight trips to the championship game in 1958 and 59, the Giants slipped to third place in 1960
- 0:48before hiring Sherman to take over in 1961 and lead New York back to the championship game.
- 0:54This is the NBC Radio broadcast featuring announcers Ray Scott and Jim Leeming.
- 1:00NBC Radio Sports brings you the National Football League Championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants.
- 1:09Hello everyone, this is Jim Leeming with Ray Scott speaking to you direct from City Stadium in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 1:17It's a cloudy overcast day here in Green Bay with a temperature just about 19 degrees as we go in the air.
- 1:26Now Ray, this is going to be important today I think as far as the weather conditions are concerned
- 1:31and just about anything can happen here in Green Bay, right? Ray Scott.
- 1:35Right you are, Jim Leeming, and good afternoon to you folks.
- 1:39Yes, Jim, I agree with you that the weather conceivably has something to do with this fall game,
- 1:44but right about now I don't think we can say enough for what the folks here in Green Bay have done
- 1:49to get this playing field in what I truly believe in keeping with the time of year
- 1:54and the weather itself is in marvelous playing condition.
- 1:57There is no doubt about it, the folks here in Green Bay are proving that they like their football
- 2:01by the way they've prepared this field for this most important game.
- 2:06Just a few minutes ago Ray and I walked over the field.
- 2:11It is not hard, as a matter of fact the temperature here in Green Bay has been well below zero most of this week
- 2:17and you would expect that it would be hard and of course that would have a great effect on the game,
- 2:22but it's been covered with hay and they tarp all week long.
- 2:26They just took it off this morning and it's truly an excellent condition.
- 2:30As a matter of fact, Coach Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers told us that when the players worked out
- 2:37on their pre-game workout he thought that perhaps they would have to wear basketball type shoes,
- 2:43but he said they were slipping and they have decided to go with the regular clean football shoe.
- 2:49The New York Giants, we noticed when they worked out, did have tennis type shoes on,
- 2:54at least about 90% of the players, so we'll have to wait until they come up
- 2:59when the opening kickoff to see just what the Giants have decided on for this ball game today.
- 3:05The players are well equipped, I will say that.
- 3:08The Green Bay Packers come into the championship game as of course champions of the West,
- 3:13having won last year and again this season their record during the regular season,
- 3:1811 wins against three losses.
- 3:21The New York Giants won 10 ball games, lost three and tied one in the Eastern Conference of the National Football League.
- 3:30Vince Lombardi, the very popular coach of the Green Bay Packers, is in his third season here in Green Bay, our national anthem.
- 3:40The New York Giants are the best team in the world.
- 4:01The New York Giants are the best team in the world.
- 4:31We're feeding Coach Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers, in his third season as head coach,
- 4:46and of course this is his second year in the title game.
- 4:50Ali Sherman is a rookie coach with the New York Giants.
- 4:55We'll have the starting lineup for you in just a moment.
- 4:59The first half of this professional football championship game is brought to you by the nation's insured savings and loan associations.

- 5:2820 rich, 20 mild. So why don't you settle back and enjoy a Marlboro?
- 5:34For this one, you get a lot to like.
- 5:37Filter, flavor, pack, or box. Marlboro.

- 5:46Over a million happy owners prove Falcon is America's best selling compact car, America's best compact value.
- 5:54See the new Falcons at your Ford dealers too.
- 5:59And now for the starting lineups of the championship game this afternoon, the 29th annual National Football League title game.
- 6:07Here is Ray Scott.
- 6:10Right, Jim. When the New York Giants have the ball, their offensive lineup will look like this.
- 6:16At left, Ben Gowish-Shopner, fifth year veteran from Baylor.
- 6:20At left tackle, number 79, Roosevelt Brown, and his eighth year from Morgan State.
- 6:25The left guard, Darrell Dess of North Carolina State in his fourth year in the league.
- 6:30The center will be Ray Wypeka, a nine-year veteran from Northwestern.
- 6:35The right guard will be one of the rookies in this New York Giants lineup, a first-year player from Michigan State, Mickey Walker.
- 6:43At right tackle, another first-year player from the University of Minnesota, Greg Larson.
- 6:48At the tight end, or right end position, Joe Walton, played his fifth playing in his fifth year from the University of Pittsburgh.
- 6:58In the backfield, at quarterback, Y.A. Tittle, who has played so magnetically for the Giants this year, the great veteran from Louisiana State his tenth year.
- 7:08At left halfback, will be one of two first-year players, either Joe Wells from Clemson, or Bob Gators of New Mexico State.
- 7:17At fullback, having a great year from North Carolina State, Alex Webster, his seventh year.
- 7:23And at the frickerback position, 11-year veteran from Southern Methodist University, Kyle Rote.
- 7:29That would be the probable offensive lineup, although Jack Stroud, a nine-year veteran lineman from Tennessee, might well be in there at one of the offensive lineman spots.
- 7:40For the Green Bay Packers, when they have the ball, at left end, Max McGee from Tulane, his sixth year in the National Football League.
- 7:48At left tackle, from Indiana, four-year player, Bob Skieronski.
- 7:53At left guard, Fred Fuzzy Thurston from Valparaiso, this is his fourth year.
- 7:59The perennial all-pro will be at center from Syracuse, the veteran Jim Ringo.
- 8:04At right guard will be Forrest Gregg of SMU, this is his fifth year.
- 8:09He's playing at right guard in view of the fact that, early in the season, Jerry Kramer was injured and has been unable to play since that time.
- 8:17Jerry's from Idaho.
- 8:18At right tackle will be Michigan State's former great, in his fifth year, Norm Masters.
- 8:23And at the tight end, from the University of Michigan, Ron Kramer, this is his fourth year.
- 8:28In the backfield, Bart Starr, who has come into his own as one of the fine quarterback in football from Alabama, Bart's sixth year.
- 8:37At halfback, Mr. Do Everything, Paul Horning of Notre Dame.
- 8:41This is Paul's fifth year, the National Football League's leading scorer this year and last year.
- 8:46At fullback, the man who trailed only Jimmy Brown of Cleveland as the leading ground-gamer, Jim Taylor of Louisiana State.
- 8:53Jim's playing his fourth year in the league.
- 8:55And the flanker back from Colorado, Koy Dowler, a 6'5 speedster, this is his third year.
- 9:02The defensive lineups we'll give you as the game goes along.
- 9:06And Jim is what I expect to be in the offensive lineups for this championship game before this capacity crowd in the town that proudly calls itself right now by virtue of the banners all over Green Bay as Titletown, USA.
- 9:20Jim?
- 9:22All right.
- 9:23And as far as championship play is concerned, the New York Giants have played an 11 title game since the first one in 1933 with the plate against the Chicago Bears.
- 9:33The Giants have won three and they have lost eight of their championship appearances.
- 9:38As far as the Green Bay Packers are concerned, they have played in a total of five.
- 9:43They have won three and they have lost two.
- 9:47Now, this past season saw the Giants and the Packers meet twice, once in preseason play and once during regular season play just three weeks ago here in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 9:59And the strange thing about that is that both games ended in the identical score of 20 to 17 with the Green Bay Packers winning both times.
- 10:10But in both of those games, it could have gone very honestly either way.
- 10:14Both of these teams have a great deal of respect for one another.
- 10:18And as you talk to the players, as we did last night and actually before game time today, you know that they figure this is going to be one of the great ones and it certainly will be one of the great ones, I'm sure, of that of today.
- 10:33As I say, they both have a great deal of respect for one another.
- 10:38The players are still in the dressing rooms down to our right and they're getting ready to be introduced in just a few moments here.
- 10:46We see that the bands, the many colorful high school bands from this area that will entertain at halftime are also entering the stadium at this point.
- 10:56It's interesting to note that the players' benches here today have both been covered and heated at least to a degree.
- 11:03Located directly behind the benches, they have a 72-foot dugout-type structure that's been erected.
- 11:10It's lined with a two-inch reflective-type insulation and within that insulation enclosure there, they have seven new revolutionary infrared heaters.
- 11:22They're located inside the structure and each provides the amount of heat that you get in a normal home furnace.
- 11:29They do expect that the players, not in the ball game, are going to be in pretty comfortable states as far as waiting to go back into defensive players when they're waiting to go in, and of course the offensive players too.
- 11:42As far as the equipment for playing in the game today, many of the players are going to wear winter-type goth gloves.
- 11:51They're padded on the back of their hand with a smooth surface on the front so they can still handle the ball.
- 11:57And of course, many of them will be wearing any other sort of equipment that they can get on to keep them warm and yet not limit their activity at all.
- 12:08I do feel, though, that the field is in such good condition from at least half an hour before game time here that they are going to have too much trouble as far as this weather is concerned.
- 12:20Would you agree on that, Ray?
- 12:22I would, Jim, and we were trying to figure out the correct terminology to use to describe a sort of rotating brush that was used in front of jeeps to actually sweep off the last of the straw, or hay if you prefer, that was placed on the field.
- 12:37So it's in good shape and let's hope at least the footing will have nothing to do with the outcome of the game.
- 12:42I'll tell you, we're going to have a tremendous football game here today.
- 12:45Well, we'll be set for the kickoff in just a minute.
- 12:50The sound of carpenter's work is a good sound, the sound of a growing America.
- 12:57For the construction business is the nation's biggest industry, a bellwether of our economy.
- 13:04The money you save at an insured savings and loan association helps your neighbors finance homes.
- 13:09It is the lifeblood of the construction industry.
- 13:12Insured savings and loan associations finance one-third of all home construction, providing jobs for carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers, rovers.
- 13:23Income for hundreds of factories, which supply the materials that go into these homes, everything from mails to appliances.
- 13:31And part of this money in turn is spent in retail stores everywhere.
- 13:36So it's good to know that when you say that an insured savings and loan association, your money, in addition to earning excess return for you,
- 13:45helps your neighbor own homes, build better communities, and stimulate all business.
- 13:51Over the years, the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers have met in title play.
- 14:06Back in 1938, the Giants and Packers met for the first time in championship play with New York winning 23-17 score.
- 14:16Then in 1939, the Packers shut out the New York Giants by a 27-0 score.
- 14:22And this, incidentally, was the first shutout in title play history.
- 14:26It was played at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
- 14:29Once again, the Packers and the Giants met in 1944 at the Polo Grounds in New York with Green Bay winning the ballgame by a 14-7 score.
- 14:41This afternoon's payoff, as far as the players are concerned, certainly is a far cry and a great credit to the National Football League in growth.
- 14:51Back in the first title game between the Giants and the Chicago Bears in 1933, the winning share was $210.
- 15:00Today, the winner will get approximately $5,300 as his share for the win today on the second place or the runner-up will get about $2,000 less.
- 15:14So there has been considerable change in the amount paid from the first game up until today to the winning players and, of course, the second place finisher, too.
- 15:26We pause 10 seconds now for station identification.
- 15:38This is WGY. WGF on the schedule.
- 15:44The coaches here today are both very likeable guys and certainly well equipped for the jobs that they have undertaken and the record bears that out.
- 15:53Vince Lombardi, as we mentioned a while ago, came to Green Bay just three years ago and he has really picked them off the ground last year winning the Western Division title
- 16:03and losing to the Philadelphia Eagles at Franklin Field in Philadelphia and this year once again winning the Western Division title.
- 16:11As far as the New York Giants are concerned, their young coach, Ali Sherman, one of the youngest coaches in the football business,
- 16:18replaced Vince Lombardi actually as offensive coach of the New York Giants back in 1959 when Vince came here to Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 16:28Following the retirement of Jim Lee Howe at New York, Ali Sherman moved up to the head coaching job and here in his first year has had a dream come true.
- 16:41The championship game and no ghost I'm sure could ask for anything more than has happened to young Ali Sherman, as I say, a very likeable guy and a fellow who has done a tremendous job.
- 16:53He did it as an assistant coach when he was the backfield coach in suck the offense of the New York Giants and has done a tremendous job as head coach in directing them to the Eastern Division title.
- 17:05Right now the New York Giants are being introduced for this ball game and I think that everything is just about ready to go, right?
- 17:14You are right, Tim. You know, the National Football League's publicity gentleman, Jim Pencil, the publicity man of the respective ball clubs,
- 17:24do such a fine job in sending out statistics to broadcasters such as Jim and myself that actually it's difficult to try and pick out just what statistics might conceivably have something to do with the ball game.
- 17:38But one thing to me is very interesting, Jim, looking at the statistical side of this game and that's the fact that the Giants defensively in the one department that I like to think that counts, giving up points, were the best.
- 17:53They gave up just 220. Next to them, the Packers. They gave up just 223. And in points scored, the Packers led with 391, right behind them the Giants with 368.
- 18:08Now the roar you hear in the background is evidence, if you need any other, that this game is being played in Green Bay.
- 18:15Their favorites are being introduced, the offensive lineup that we gave you moments ago, the offensive starters for the Green Bay Packers.
- 18:24And you know something right now, although the lights are on, at City Stadium, the side is shining, Jim. I hope that's some sort of an omen.
- 18:32It certainly is a welcome sight here in Green Bay, I'll tell you that. Ray, talking about statistics, there are a couple of interesting ones that may show something about how these teams like to operate.
- 18:44Statistically, the Green Bay Packers have shown just a little bit better straight on the ground, although not too much than the New York Giants.
- 18:54In net yards rushing, the Green Bay Packers have gained 2,350 yards this season, to the Giants, 1,857.
- 19:04And when you get to the passing game with Y.A. Schivel and Johnny Connolly, who will handle this New York attack so well, the Giants are just a little bit smarter in that department, at least to prove themselves over the season.
- 19:18The Giants have gained 3,035 yards through the air, while the Green Bay Packers, 2,500 and 2 yards.
- 19:27Statistically, both of these teams seem to be in pretty good shape for this afternoon's game, and as far as I know, the New York Giants have known that they're worried too much about physically, and Ray, you've been with the Packers for these many years.
- 19:45Now, how about Green Bay as far as their physical condition is concerned today?
- 19:49Most of their players, and again to the best of my knowledge, Jim, have come back from whatever injuries they have had during the season, with the one exception I mentioned earlier,
- 19:57for our Jerry Kramer, who sustained an injury early in the season, and of course they have lost him for the year, but they have made the necessary adjustment at that position.
- 20:06Max McGee was injured in the San Francisco 49er game, he is pronounced ready.
- 20:11John Simac sustained an injury at the end of the season, the last game of the season in fact against the Rams, he is pronounced ready.
- 20:18I would say the one question mark right now would be, and I even hesitate to mention it, but perhaps some sort of a record should be made,
- 20:26and that is that the Packers, grateful by Jim Taylor, has been something less than his usual physical self.
- 20:32But time will tell, he certainly looked well in pregame warm-up for whatever that means.
- 20:38The officials for today's game are right about now bringing out the captain of the Giants, Andy Robustelli, and they'll be joined in a moment.
- 20:47The referee, George Rennox, and Robustelli, along with Kyle Rote, will be joined by the counter-parts of the Packers, Bill Forrest,
- 20:55the defensive captain, and Jimmy Ringo, the offensive captain.
- 20:59In addition to George Rennox, the umpire is Jim Beersdorfer, the headlinesman, John Heiberger, the back judge, Charles Chuck Sweeney, and the field judge is Frank Luzar.
- 21:10The indication being made that the Giants have won the toss and will receive.
- 21:18And so this kickoff is just a moment or so away, and I know it's a hackneyed phrase and has been used many times,
- 21:25but Jim, I honestly think you can feel his excitement.
- 21:29You certainly can. They've gone over almost every championship game, and there hasn't been a run that hasn't had some point in it that,
- 21:38well, just outshone the run the year before, and we fully expect that here this afternoon in Green Bay, we're going to have just such a ballgame.
- 21:47I know that all of the players are ready to give it everything they have, and you can be sure that both coaches and their staffs have done everything in their power
- 21:57to prepare these teams for this ballgame this afternoon.
- 22:00The Green Bay Packers go out onto the field, the New York Giants are there, and we're ready for action here this afternoon.
- 22:07The National Football League title game, the Eastern Division champions, the New York Giants coached by Ali Sherman,
- 22:14and the Western Division champs, the Green Bay Packers coached by Vick Slombardi, or the play-by-play action, here is Ray Scott.
- 22:23Right you are, and mighty happy that all of you are with us.
- 22:26Veteran place kicker Ben Agagianian will kick off for the Packers, defending the goal line to our left.
- 22:31Deep for the Giants at the goal line is Joel Wells and Bob Gators, two rookie half-backs of Ali Sherman's Giants.
- 22:38We're set to go, mighty happy you're with us, and let's hope we have a great football game.
- 22:43This crowd is really coming alive as Ben Agagianian looks at the ball, comes up toward the ball, and the championship game is underway.
- 22:53It is off to the left. It is going to land at the 15-yard line.
- 22:56He's picked up by Wells. He gets away from one man to the 20, 25, and he has cut it from behind and stripped down at around the 30-yard line.
- 23:04Joel Wells takes a comparatively short kickoff. Ray and Nitski makes the tackle.
- 23:10It is the Giants' ball, first down and 10 from the 31-yard line.
- 23:14Y.A. Tittle will be the quarterback in a moment.
- 23:16We'll know whether the Giants are going to try and start with something very surprising.
- 23:20The Giants, I see, decided to go with regular football shoes.
- 23:23They have to start at the basketball play field and at warm-up time.
- 23:27Webster and Wells are in the backfield behind Y.A. Tittle, and it is coming off the left side of Webster.
- 23:33He's down by the 31-yard line. Joel Wells hit at the 31-yard line.
- 23:36Henry Jordan broke through, cut off a block, and brought a disaster about the line of scrimmage to Joel Wells, who is starting instead of Bob Gators at left halfback.
- 23:45Wells played at Winston, 6'1", and 198.
- 23:48A gain of 1 yard, second down, 9 yards to go. The Giants moving right to left in their own 31-yard line.
- 23:55Dale Schachtner is a tight left end. Flanking out wide to the right is Kyle Rote.
- 24:00Y.A. Tittle looks over the packer defense. Snap, fades.
- 24:05It's a fake draw, though it is a draw to Y.A. and it is Webster trying to go straight ahead.
- 24:09And he is hit down at the 32-yard line by linebacker Tommy Bettis.
- 24:15From a third down and 8, a gain of 1 that time.
- 24:18So it is Schachtner, Roosevelt Brown, Stroud, Dess, Zweitecke, Lyson, Walton, Rote, Webster, Tittle, and Wells for the Giants.
- 24:25The packers up front have Willie Davis, Dave Hanner, Henry Jordan, and Bill Flinman.
- 24:29Dan Curry, Tom Bettis, and Bill Flinman for us to the linebackers.
- 24:32Hank Govinger, Johnny Simak, Willie Wood, and Jess Whittendale on the offense.
- 24:35Third down, 8-3 for the Giants from their own 32-yard line. Game just underway, no score from Green Bay.
- 24:41Right, but with a long count and he pays the pass. That's pretty good protection.
- 24:45Goes out on the right flat to Webster. He comes to the 35-yard line, slips and falls.
- 24:49He jumps to the 37-yard line and will come up fourth down and 3.
- 24:53A quick pass, a little flair out on the right flat.
- 24:57Making the tackle was linebacker Dan Curry.
- 25:00And the first series of downs, the Packers Defense of Union have held the Giants.
- 25:05And it apparently will be a punting situation for New York.
- 25:08And again, the sun begins to shine here at Green Bay.
- 25:11Doing the punting will be John Chandler. He's one of the best.
- 25:14Dealing for Green Bay will be Luke Coffender and Willie Wood, down around the 20-yard line.
- 25:19Chandler will punt him about the Giants' 22-yard line with a sun at his back.
- 25:24Pass to the center. The kick is away.
- 25:27It is end over end. Plans at the 30, picked up by Willie Wood at the 25, away from one man, another,
- 25:32and slides up to his left at the 27-yard line.
- 25:36Very little run back, and Jim, there's no doubt about it.
- 25:39This field is going to be a little bit treacherous now that we've actually watched them try and make those cuts.
- 25:45I certainly think it will be, Ray. It seems to be a little soft on top, actually.
- 25:50And as they dig in there, they're hitting a hard surface.
- 25:55At least it appears that way from up here about an inch or so down.
- 25:59Dark Star brings the Packers up to the line, first down from their own punky 7-yard line.
- 26:04At fullback is Jimmy Taylor, left half is Paul Horning.
- 26:07Boyd Dowler flank wide to the right, and Max McGee split left.
- 26:09Star looks over the defense at his Horning straight ahead, and he drives for about 2 and that's all.
- 26:1428-yard line, Jimmy Meard, Jim Katkwabich hitting down.
- 26:18Jim Wingo is the offensive center for Green Bay.
- 26:21Plank by Fuzzy Thurston on the left side, Horst Greg on the right.
- 26:24The tackles are Bob Staranski and Norm Masters.
- 26:26Ron Kramer, the tight end, he'll line up either on the right or left side.
- 26:30He'll form that time for Horning, second down 9. Jimmy Katkwabich, Dick Moleskiew, Rosie Greer, and Andy Robeskelly, the front four for the Giots.
- 26:38Cliff Livingston, a fan, Huff and Tom, stop the linebackers.
- 26:41Here it's Barnes, Joe Morrison, Jim Patton, Dick Lynch, City Bend.
- 26:44Second down 9, Green Bay, moving left to right from their own 28-yard line.
- 26:48White Star calls the signals, takes the snap, hands off to Horning,
- 26:53and he goes off the left side and drives forward to near the 34-yard line.
- 26:58Back to the left side, he's hit first by Andy Robeskelly with help from Tom Scott and other Giants.
- 27:03But Robeskelly made the first contact, Bob Staranski led the blocking.
- 27:07The game is to the 28-yard line as they untile.
- 27:10And so it is third down, about 3.
- 27:13Green Bay moving from their own 34-yard line, left to right, first quarter just underway, no score.
- 27:19Giants took the opening kickoff, were forced to punt after three plays.
- 27:22The Packers have moved out, first time to the board, with third down and about 2, rather than 3.
- 27:27Now there swings out right to the right, Max McGee's, hits left.
- 27:31Ron Kramer is a tight right end.
- 27:34The line is poised, White Star calls the signals, Giants are ready.
- 27:37Third down 2, wrong count, might have changed his signal.
- 27:40It is off to the right side for Horning, and he drives to about the 35-yard line.
- 27:44He'll probably be short of a first down.
- 27:46Jimmy Katkavich made first contact, and apparently it's going to be 4-and-1.
- 27:51Horning gets a yard, trying to slant off to the right.
- 27:54Katkavich made a fine defensive play, it is 4-and-1, and so the first two times that the Giants and the Packers test each other,
- 28:01apparently they will both have to punt.
- 28:03Joey Wells and Joe Morrison will be the deep end for New York, Jim.
- 28:07It's pretty apparent so far that the quarterbacks are trying to let their teams warm up a little bit and not handle that ball too much.
- 28:14Boyd Dowler will punt from the Packer 20.
- 28:17He and McGee have shared the punting this season.
- 28:20There's the passing center.
- 28:21The kick is away, and it's a beauty.
- 28:23It drives Wells all the way back to the 11-yard line.
- 28:26He comes to his left of the 15, and he loses his footing, but barely goes at the 14-yard line as Elijah Pitt and Forrest Greg,
- 28:35following first contact by Nelson Taburan, but a penalty marker was dropped.
- 28:42A tremendous punt by Boyd Dowler.
- 28:48But there was a penalty on the play.
- 28:50Backup field comes the ball.
- 28:52The illegal procedure has been indicated by referee George Rex.
- 28:56We will await.
- 28:59It is against Green Bay.
- 29:01Five yards.
- 29:02Back comes the ball.
- 29:04A tremendous punt.
- 29:05And Jim, I thought about as good a punt coverage as you could ever hope to have off a deep punt by Green Bay.
- 29:10Certainly was, and the safety man holding on to that ball is amazing out here this afternoon, too.
- 29:16They had really covered him up, and he just didn't have a chance.
- 29:19He was just lucky to hold on to him.
- 29:21Instead of fourth and one, it is fourth and six, and the Packers come out of the huddle and again line up in a punt formation.
- 29:27Game just underway.
- 29:28First quarter, no score.
- 29:29The Packers and the Giants for the Pro Championship.
- 29:32Dowler waiting for the ball.
- 29:34Same two deep men.
- 29:35There's a pass from center.
- 29:36There's the kick.
- 29:37This is another good one.
- 29:38Not quite as deep.
- 29:40It will be taken by Morrison at the 25, who is right to the 30, and down he goes, pit-pitting.
- 29:45Elijah Pitts.
- 29:48Along with Lee Fulkens.
- 29:51Downfield, the Giants, however, instead of having the ball inside the 15 as they did a moment ago, will have it at the 31.
- 29:59First down and 10, the Giants will be right to left their own 31-yard line after about five minutes of play.
- 30:04No score from City Stadium, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 30:07Dale Schoencker slips to the left.
- 30:09Kyle Rowe pranks to the right.
- 30:10Joe Wolt in the tight left end.
- 30:12Webster and Wells in the backfield behind the veteran Y.A. Tittle.
- 30:16Snap of the ball.
- 30:18Straight ahead it is Wells to the 35 to the 39-yard line.
- 30:22Joe Wells, first to your back from Clemson.
- 30:25And he is within about a yard of a first down at the Giants' 39-yard line.
- 30:29It will be second down one.
- 30:32Not a pass has been thrown by the Packers the first time they had the ball.
- 30:37A little flare pass was thrown by Tittle to Webster on third down the first time they had the ball.
- 30:42Giants ready on second down one.
- 30:44You can see a Tittle goes for the big gander on second and short yardage.
- 30:47Moving from the 39-yard line.
- 30:50We're set.
- 30:51Tittle to snap.
- 30:52Off to the left side trying to find a hole.
- 30:54As Webster he comes to the 41.
- 30:56He might have the first down.
- 30:57Alex Webster of North Carolina State standing to the left trying to pick his way, leaving the blocking with center Ray Witeka.
- 31:05We will have a measure back.
- 31:08So, so far, Jim, it's a question of the rival quarterbacks just trying to pick some sort of a little flaw.
- 31:13Taylor, so far, has been used as a decoy.
- 31:16It will be interesting to see if Hornan will be the man carrying the ball.
- 31:19And Taylor, who did so very well in the regular season game against the Giants, will be a decoy or not.
- 31:25So far, as you mentioned, they are using Taylor as a decoy.
- 31:30Whether the Giants know about it not being quite up to par, of course, is another question.
- 31:36Although I would guess that they most certainly do.
- 31:39It was a first down by inches.
- 31:41The Giants are the first, first down of the game.
- 31:43It comes at their 41-yard line with about nine minutes left in the first quarter and no score from City Stadium, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 31:49Rowe points to the right.
- 31:51Schachtner, the great receiver, slips to the left.
- 31:54Witeka poised under center, calls a snap, fades the pass.
- 31:57He's looking over the middle.
- 31:58He throws back to the right.
- 31:59And it is going to be dropped by Rowe cutting at field.
- 32:03Not to cover with Curry, Ben Gruminger, but Rowe was there.
- 32:06The ball just dripped off his center tips.
- 32:08It's incomplete.
- 32:09It will be second down and fed.
- 32:10So we have Cuddle on first down ten from the Giants' 40-and-a-half-yard line going to Rowe, who ran a down-and-out pattern to the right as the Giants look at it.
- 32:21I think it's pretty obvious how chilly it is down there with Rowe dropping that because it really was right to him.
- 32:29And you don't see Kyle Rowe drop very many like that.
- 32:31Second down ten as the Giants come up to the line of scrimmage.
- 32:34Rowe is up on the line of scrimmage on the right side, Schalkner is put out to the left.
- 32:40And it is straight ahead as the flag goes down on a trough play, Joel Wells, but a penalty marker was down.
- 32:49The Packers defensively have Willie Davis, Dave Hanner, Henry Jordan, Bill Quirman along the line.
- 32:54The linebackers, Dan Curry, Tom Bennis, Bill Forrester.
- 32:58The penalty is against the Packers broadside.
- 33:01It will be second down and five. And the deep men are Hans Neman, Gerovator, Johnny Steinach of Florida,
- 33:07Willie Willis of Southern Cal, Jess Whitten of Texas Western.
- 33:10Second down five, the Giants here at their own 45-and-a-half-yard line, Rowe out to the right, Schalkner to the left.
- 33:17Tittle looks over the Packers, hasn't served crouched yet.
- 33:19Now he's in a crouched behind Senator Whitechekett, takes a snap.
- 33:22Dave Tindall, loose ball, falling on I believe by Webster at the 48-yard line.
- 33:27Picked up a couple of yards, or was it Joel Wells?
- 33:31No, it was Webster.
- 33:33The ball bounced, and right on top of it was Webster, the ball carrier.
- 33:37It will be third and a long two for the Giants from their own 48.
- 33:43So we come up to that down, which so many times, he's tried so many things.
- 33:48Third and in this instance, a long two for the Giants from their own 48-yard line.
- 33:53Just under eight minutes left in the first quarter, no score, Giants with the ball.
- 34:01Tittle looking around, still not crouched.
- 34:03Now he is, takes a snap, looking for a quick receiver.
- 34:07He hits Rowe, and he is one of the nail at the Packers 46-yard line on a quick flip out to the right.
- 34:15Rowe just took a couple steps down, moved out to the sideline, turned these back to the defender, took the quick pass,
- 34:21and it's a first down for the Giants, their second consecutive first down.
- 34:25For the first time, a team has crossed into the other territory.
- 34:28Giants ball at the Packers 46-and-a-half-yard line, inbounds marker, far side of the field as the Giants move right to left here in the first quarter.
- 34:36No score.
- 34:38Rowe again to the right.
- 34:41Schopner to the left.
- 34:43Webster and Wells are the backs.
- 34:46Tittle takes the pass.
- 34:47And he's going for Schopner, and he falls down, and it's incomplete at the 30-yard line.
- 34:51It was actually thrown out of bounds, as both Willie Wood, who is the free man, and Jess Whittenton, who did a tremendous job.
- 34:58You know, Jim, the first time the Giants played the Packers, the game in Milwaukee won by Green Bay in the regular season, 20-17,
- 35:05Whittenton did what some professional football observers told me was the greatest job playing man-to-man against Schopner.
- 35:11The first time Schopner they had ever seen, limited to just one reception, and that time again showed how close he can stay to a truly great receiver as Joe Schopner.
- 35:20Schopner is truly one of the great receivers here this weekend.
- 35:24It was pretty obvious down there when he just saw on that last play, though, that he had lost his footing because of the turf.
- 35:30Second down, 10.
- 35:31Giants ready.
- 35:33Smack of the ball.
- 35:34Coming out to the left side, his Webster, and he is through and under for a loss of one.
- 35:39And it's swing to the left, and the Packers were waiting.
- 35:41Tom Bennett, Joe Klinman, Henry Jordan.
- 35:46Webster trying to come outside.
- 35:48Ball is placed actually at the line of scrimmage, his forward shot is being there, so it is third and 10.
- 35:56And of course, always be mindful of the fact, as we are, that the Giants have a great place kicker in Pat Spermerow on the bench,
- 36:04just as the Packers have both Paul Horne and Ben Aguigenian.
- 36:08So a third down and 10 play coming up as the Giants are on the line of scrimmage and the Packers are waiting.
- 36:14Little face to pass.
- 36:16That's pretty good protection.
- 36:17That's a lot of time.
- 36:18He's throwing very deep, and it is Rote dropping the ball at the 13-yard line.
- 36:26Willie Woods and Griminger were both deep, but Rote made a little maneuver at the last instant, which put him just in front of Willie Woods.
- 36:35The ball dropped out of his grasp, it is fourth and 10.
- 36:39Into the game is John Chandler.
- 36:42With the ball at the Green Bay 46-and-a-half-yard line, this modest drive of the Giants comes to an apparent halt with about six minutes left in the first quarter and no score.
- 36:52Luke Poppender, Willie Woods looking into the sun are the deep man at the 10-yard line for Green Bay.
- 36:57John Chandler, a great runner, stands at the John 40.
- 37:01The pass in the center is true. The pick came from the left-topping corner.
- 37:05A high spiral will go into the end zone in the left corner, and the Packers will have the ball for the second time in the game from their own 20-yard line.
- 37:16And no doubt about it, Jim, the weather is cold enough when, as you mentioned earlier, a sure-fingered receiver like Kyle Rote has trouble holding onto the ball.
- 37:26He is having a little bit of difficulty with his right hand, too. He had that injured, and I'm sure that isn't helping him at all on these receptions.
- 37:34But he is a truly great receiver, and that has to be one of the reasons with this frigid weather.
- 37:42Packers up on the line at the 20, but star-called signals Taylor and Horning behind it.
- 37:46Taylor to the right, rather Horning to the right.
- 37:50And it is Paul Horning off the left side coming to the 20 for the 24-yard line, signing to the left.
- 37:55And again, it was first a fake to Taylor, then the gift to Horning.
- 37:59The first time back in Milwaukee, Taylor had one of his great days when he ran for 186 yards against the Giants.
- 38:08And conceivably, the Packers are trying to take advantage of the fact that they are expecting Taylor.
- 38:12In a four, second down six, Rosie Greer, the right tackle.
- 38:16Andy Robeschelli, the defensive right hand, made the spot for New York.
- 38:20Second down six, Green Bay, moving left to right from their own 24-yard line.
- 38:24Boyd Dowler to the right, Max McGee to the left.
- 38:27No score, first quarter about five minutes left in the period.
- 38:31Star takes the hand off. He's looking for a deep receiver.
- 38:36He's going for McGee, and it is just over his fingertips at the 36-yard line.
- 38:43Come in on the play was Dick Wedge.
- 38:45It touched the fingertips of Max McGee, who had a step on the defender.
- 38:51And Star, like Fiddle, has shown us already what a tremendous passery is to be on target at great distance.
- 38:59Well, you mentioned Dick Wedge and the Giants brochured as a confirmed bachelor and the Dick had married last Thursday.
- 39:07Oh.
- 39:08Third and sixth, Green Bay, from their own 24-yard line. The Packers have yet to register a first down.
- 39:12The Giants have two. There is no score, and about five minutes left in the first quarter.
- 39:17The Giants clear it under the Packers, third and sixth from their own 24. Same offensive setup.
- 39:22McGee left, Dowler right. Back of the ball.
- 39:26Mark Star takes the pass, throws it to Paul Horning at the 30. He's at the 35. He's at the 40.
- 39:31This comes to the right at the 45. He's at the field. Paul Horning is down.
- 39:37The
- 39:41Jack Star with a quick pass to the short man. Paul Horning. Whistle on the field.
- 39:48The Giants are barely one o'clock, Greensboro.
- 39:51So there's time out on the field with a score. Green Bay nothing and New York nothing.
- 40:03You know, actually, I've just come from Moebius, and I think there's something wrong with us.
- 40:07But, Marge, I
- 40:08You know that family's in Moebius?
- 40:10Yeah.
- 40:11They've got us moving the company and the school, buildings, and loan associations, and that's how they paid for it.
- 40:17But, Marge, I
- 40:18The Giants is an un-experienced company. It's broken to the point I won't survive until
- 40:23But, Marge, I
- 40:24All you do is go in and open an account and then add another month. You're saving very income, too.
- 40:32But, Marge, I
- 40:33I don't have to. I can use it to do any of that. There's an insured savings and loan association right there.
- 40:38But, Marge, I have an account at an insured savings and loan association.
- 40:45No. Can you?
- 40:47That's what I've been trying to tell you. But, Marge.
- 40:50Yes, dear.
- 40:52There's no reason you can't open one, too, in your own name. Two accounts in a family are better than one.
- 40:59From City Stadium, Green Bay, Wisconsin, along with Jim Layman, this is Ray Statham.
- 41:06And we have no score. The Packers have just come up with a 26-yard pass play.
- 41:12A short flip over the middle to Paul Horning from quarterback Bart Starr.
- 41:16Horning running very well, moved all the way from midfield before being down.
- 41:21So, we are ready to go again. The Packers come up to the line, ball at the inbound, mock and air kind of field.
- 41:26McGee to the left. Dowler is a fairly tight right end, and Ron Kramer is a tight left end.
- 41:31Dowler now moves out a few steps to the right. Star call, D-signal.
- 41:36Takes a snap. Paul Horning off the left side, cuts through to the 45-yard line of the Giants before he's down on a quick opener.
- 41:43Hit down by Rosie Greer behind good blocking by the left side of the Green Bay line. Bob Skoranski, Pucky Thurston.
- 41:49Game of five for Horning on a quick hitter off the left side. And so far, the timing of his first quarter remains the same.
- 41:57Jim Taylor has so far been nothing more than a decoy. Paul Horning has been the man carrying the mails.
- 42:03Second down, five, and a five-yard game by Horning at the Giants 45-yard line.
- 42:08No score in the first quarter, a little over four-minute cuts in the period.
- 42:11Packers are ready. So are the Giants. Star call, Pickles.
- 42:14Takes the snap, takes the pass. No, against Taylor over the middle to the right on the drop way, he goes to the 41-yard line.
- 42:20Only a fine open field tackle by Cliff Livingston kept Jimmy Taylor running that time on the drop way from putting up even more yardage.
- 42:28Game of about four. We'll bring up a third down and about one-and-a-half at the Giants 41-and-a-half-yard line.
- 42:36Giants defensively have cut Cavie Smogolowski, Greer Robustelli, up front.
- 42:41Livingston-Hubson dropped the linebackers. Barnes, Morrison, Patton, and went to the defense.
- 42:48Star certainly took that up well. He faked it to Horning, and Horning really carried out the fake to let Jim Taylor go on him.
- 42:56Big play coming up, third and one-and-a-half.
- 43:01Snap of the ball, Jim Taylor off the right side. He's at the 40, he's at the 33-yard line.
- 43:07The third Giants, Joe Morrison, the hitting, going down. Barnes hitting two.
- 43:13Jimmy Taylor has the first down for the Packers, their deepest penetration.
- 43:18At the Giants 37-yard line, referee George Rackes indicates first down, Sand Green Bay.
- 43:24About three minutes left in the first quarter, there is no score.
- 43:28Ball and bounce marker near the side of the field. Boyd Dowler comes out of the huddle, slips right.
- 43:33The second Giants, Joe McGee, will be a pretty tight left end. Ron Kramer is a tight right end.
- 43:39The line is crossed for Green Bay.
- 43:45Snap of the ball, Jimmy Taylor off the right side. Find Caleight and comes to the 33-yard line.
- 43:50Before he's met by the great middle linebacker, Sam Huck.
- 43:54Leading the blocking, Fuzzy Thurston, Ron Kramer, Masters, Greg.
- 44:00Going to play to the 32-yard line, a five yard, second down, a five.
- 44:06Over two minutes left in this scoreless first quarter, Giants took the opening kickoff, failed the move and covered.
- 44:14Packers didn't move, they had the punt. Giants moved for two first downs, forced the punt.
- 44:18The Packers have held the ball since then from their own 20, and a move down to a second down, five, at the Giants 32-yard line.
- 44:25McGee to the right, Dowler. Kramer lined up as a tight left end this time.
- 44:30Snap of the ball, Paul Horning off the left side, to the 30, to the 23-yard line.
- 44:36It's a play-by-play by Tom Scott and Joe Morrison. Paul Horning drives seven yards for a first down,
- 44:44almost directly in front of the goal post at the Giants 25-yard line.
- 44:48Horning, of all the runners, seems to be having the least amount of trouble with footing here today. As a matter of fact, he had not any so far in his cutting and maneuvering once he gets past that line of scrimmage.
- 45:01Again, Boyd Dowler will go wide to the right. McGee will be a tight left end, and Kramer the same way on the right side.
- 45:08Practically a seven-man Giants line.
- 45:12Straight ahead, Jimmy Taylor. He's at the 20-yard line before they hit it. Up the right side, behind time blocking by Norm Masters.
- 45:21Sam Huff makes the stop. Five-yard game.
- 45:26Second down, five. Jim, I hear the crowd booing, but quite honestly, I have no idea why.
- 45:33I think Sam Huff and Jim Taylor had a few words down there. After that tackle, I'm quite sure that the Green Bay fans didn't want one of their great favorites more than any way.
- 45:46Second down and five. And again, we're happy to tell you, for our benefit, the sun is shining. McGee to the left, Dowler to the right.
- 45:54Sam Huff, tight left end. Second down and five. Green Bay up the Giants 20-yard line. Closing seconds, first quarter, no score.
- 46:02Back of the ball. Starface to pass. He's throwing over the middle. And he'll get it out of the hand.
- 46:07A Dowler and a hitter first.
- 46:10Second down and five.
- 46:15Boyd Dowler.
- 46:18And I'll see if they're good. Say the officials. It is a first down for Green Bay at the Giants 20-yard line. It comes with the unofficial scoreboard clock, showing 35 seconds remaining in the first period.
- 46:33I believe that that was Eric Spine who thinks that it was a call on him, but Sam Huff ran into him actually before the ball had reached him.
- 46:41I do believe that that was a man that had a call on him. The referee asks the crowd to quiet down. They do.
- 46:49First and goal at the seventh. Packers are poised. Dowler, flank right. McGee's good about five yards to the left side. Star calls the signal.
- 46:59Snap of the ball. Jimmy Taylor off the left side. Finds a little bit of room and drives to about the sixth.
- 47:04The hole quickly closed up. Sam Huff led the defense to charge.
- 47:09The ball is shot from Dick Lynch, among others.
- 47:16He's only played at any about a half yard. And we may or may not have time for another play here in the first period.
- 47:23Although the official time is stepped on the field by the back judge.
- 47:27It is usually close to that showing on the scoreboard and the scoreboard clock, which is running, shows just three seconds left in the period.
- 47:35The ball is shot by Cuddle. There's the gun.
- 47:40That's the end of the first quarter with the score. Green Day nothing. New York nothing.
- 47:46In a few days, the nation's insured savings and loan association will say happy new year to their savers with a dividend to 29 million people.

- 48:42Savings are insured by United States government agencies.
- 48:48We pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 48:52These are the General Electric stations WGBRI and WGF. I'm going to start that today.
- 48:58Along with Jim Leaming, this is Ray Scott at City Stadium Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 49:10The second quarter is about to get underway in this National Football League Championship game.
- 49:14The Green Bay Packers have a second and goal at the giant 6 1 half yard line.
- 49:18Now moving from right to left from the ball about 20 yards in from the near side of the field.
- 49:23The sun is at the back of the Packers now. Green Bay comes up to the line.
- 49:27Dowler to the right. McGee to the left. Watch star called signals. Wrong camera. Tight right end.
- 49:35Back to the ball. Paul Horning off the right side. Top of the five. Inbound touchdown.
- 49:55John Masters and Forrest Greg with Ron Kramer lead the blocking so Paul Horning. And the Packers draw first blood leading 6-0.
- 50:06Horning with star holding will try to make it 7.
- 50:14Ball is down. The ticket's in the air. It's good. There's time out on the field to get a score.
- 50:19Green Bay 7, New York nothing.
- 50:27A ride on a roller coaster is fun.
- 50:32It goes up, up, up, and then...
- 50:40Down it goes.
- 50:42On a roller coaster ride is no place for your life savings.
- 50:47If you want to avoid the ups and downs of speculation, do what millions of smart Americans are doing.
- 50:53Save regularly at your nearby insured savings and loan associations.
- 50:59There your savings will be safe, not subject to market fluctuations, and invested in sound home loans.
- 51:06Excellent earnings provide you with growth potential or a second source of income.
- 51:11So don't put all your nest eggs in one basket of speculation.
- 51:15Keep a substantial amount of a savings account at an insured savings and loan association,
- 51:21where your money is insured up to $10,000 by a United States government agency.
- 51:34Jim, Paul Horning has certainly been a most impressive runner today, but as you have pointed out on several occasions,
- 51:40his teamwork, a P and a Taylor, with their fakes setting up the other, has made it all possible.
- 51:45Beautiful stake on the touchdown play.
- 51:47Char to Taylor to give to Horning.
- 51:49Here's Ben Aguigenian's kick. It's pretty high.
- 51:52Wells comes to meet him at the 16th, comes to the 20th.
- 51:55Sits him down, he goes at the 25-yard line.
- 51:59Joel Wells, as he slips right there with him, was the young fellow who was sitting down on Phil Manning kickoff for Green Bay, Elijah Pitts.
- 52:07So now it's the offensive group of the Giants with the ball at their own 25-and-a-half yard line,
- 52:13moving left to right, Green Bay leading 7-and-0.
- 52:15Wye fiddle at quarter. Joel Wells at left half. Alex Webster at full. Kyle Rowe at the marker.
- 52:21Schottner and Walton at the end.
- 52:25To the left is Schottner. To the right is Rowe.
- 52:29And off to the, taking off to the left side, fiddle throws to the right side, and it is off the right hand of Kyle Rowe.
- 52:35And the beautiful fake that time by Wye Fiddleton-Webster.
- 52:39He's in time to look then to the opposite side, to the right near side line.
- 52:44His pass was just off target and tended for Kyle Rowe, as Hank Greminger and Dale Curry, dropping back, the left linebacker, were there to cover.
- 52:53It is second and 10, New York, from their 25-and-a-half.
- 52:56Second quarter, just underway, Green Bay leading 7-0 over the Giants.
- 53:02As a draw to the left side, Webster carrying, finds some running room and drives to a 30-and-a-yard line, where he's met by Dave Hunter.
- 53:10It's a count of about five on the fullback draw with Alex Webster picking his way for five.
- 53:16It'll be third and five, New York, moving left through right on their 30-and-a-half yard line.
- 53:22If you look at the Giants bench, you can see Charlie Connery working seriously on that fold, with the Scouts upstairs.
- 53:29In the quarter to four, the New York Giants continues here, no doubt at will.
- 53:33The Giants will be in there if they can't move this ball under Wye Tiddler.
- 53:39A spread formation now for New York, just before the snap of the ball.
- 53:43And fading to pass is Tiddler. He is looking, he's throwing, the ball is down and it is set for John Yitzke.
- 53:48He is at the 34-yard line.
- 53:54John Yitzke intercepts a ball that was bandaged near the line of scummage.
- 54:01It was by virtue of being tipped short of its target.
- 54:06Wayne Yitzke, who had moved in at middle line backer, carries it back to the Giants' 34-yard line, and the Packers are in great position.
- 54:15They are first out of the Giants' 34 and leading 7-0 early in the second quarter.
- 54:20Backer to the right, McGee, switch left. Ron Fender, the tight right end, as Bart Starr holds up his hands and asks his capacity crowd to be cried.
- 54:29Snap of the ball, hit a corner, off to the right, looking for a receiver.
- 54:33He is throwing for McGee, he has it, and he's up to the 14-yard line.
- 54:39Dick Lynch was defending.
- 54:45Back comes the ball to the Giants' 34-yard line.
- 54:48There was the half-back option play, and showing again how dangerous it is when you have a fellow like Mourning, and before that was the Giants, the great Frank Gifford, before his retirement.
- 54:58The yellow matrata, of course, was they figured that Lynch was interfering.
- 55:02There was a very fine line between fast interference and playing the ball, and Dick Lynch, oh, that was playing the ball.
- 55:09Second and 10.
- 55:11Dowler to the right.
- 55:15Over the cover, and there's Barnes. Fairly tight left end this time, here's McGee.
- 55:19Getting back to pass on second down is Bart Starr. He has time, he is throwing for McGee.
- 55:24He's there, and it's just over his hands at the one-yard line.
- 55:27Looking back into the side, Jim Patton was defending that time.
- 55:32So again, Bart Starr tries to go for distance, and it is incomplete, and it's third down, and fed.
- 55:40Packers seven, Giants nothing. About 15 minutes left in the first half.
- 55:45The Packers scoring on an 80-yard touchdown drive, with Paul Horning going in on the first play of the second quarter from six and a half yards out, then adding the extra points.
- 55:57Packers in the huddle, Giants setting up their defense.
- 56:00To the right, Dowler, Ron Kramer will be a tight right end.
- 56:04Max McGee comes out to the left. Lynch will move over to cover.
- 56:09Packers are poised. Giants are ready. Starr pays the pass. Over the middle, it is Kramer at the 25, at the 20.
- 56:16Mike has waited a 16-yard run at the 40-yard touchdown.
- 56:20And then, Jim Patton, bringing down Ron Kramer, the tight right end, broke over the middle.
- 56:27Starr hitting perfectly with a quick toss. First down at the 30-yard line.
- 56:33Starr comes up with the big third down answer, teaming up with a former Michigan great, Ron Kramer, on a pass over the middle.
- 56:40Seven nothing. Packers lead. Second quarter, about 12 and a half minutes remaining in the period.
- 56:46Wallace at the inbounds marker, near side of the field.
- 56:49That familiar set up, Dowler to the right, McGee to the left. Ron Kramer, tight right end again.
- 56:54Behind Starr, Taylor and Horning.
- 56:58Back to the ball, handoff. Jimmy Taylor up the middle, fights only for a couple of yards.
- 57:03That big giant line was there. Tett Savage, Mochalecki, Greer, Robins Kelly.
- 57:11Forward progress will be marked to 17-yard line. Taylor gets one.
- 57:16The Packers offensively have Jim Arndt, Hunter, 21st and 24th, Gregg at guard, Bob Stransky and Norm Masters at tackles.
- 57:24Kramer, the tight right end. He does a lot of blocking in addition to being a fine receiver.
- 57:28Max McGee, with usually to the left, Boyd Dowler, Frank Streit, star of the quarterback, Horning and Taylor, the linebacker.
- 57:36Second down, nine. Packer ball of a giant 17. Packers leading seven nothing early in the second quarter.
- 57:44Back to Starr. It is straight ahead. Jimmy Taylor trying to find running room crosses of 15 to the first, king yard line.
- 57:51Met by Robins Kelly, Greer and others of the Giants.
- 57:55So it will start up a third down as players still on file. Jimmy Taylor slowly getting up.
- 58:00The ball is going to be at the 13-yard line. It will be third and a long five.
- 58:07Ball inbound marker near side of the field. This next play of course could decide whether the Packers will have a chance to go for three or for six.
- 58:16Giants are ready and waiting. The sun right now is shining absolutely beautifully and there are practically no clouds from the skies over Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 58:26So Packers come up. Starr looks for the defense.
- 58:32Back to the ball, fades the pass, looks to the right, is looking with his complete third down, low, hit, foul.
- 58:47Dark star. Dark star hit a quick flat tenor in the boy Dowler who was in front of the defense.
- 58:57Hitting on the fingertips at the five, Dowler went in without a hand being right on end. The Packers move into a 13-nothing lead.
- 59:04Starr will hold for one in.
- 59:10Ball is not bound, kick in the air, looks good. There's time out on the field. This is Starr. Green Bay 14, the New York Giants, nothing.
- 59:22The sound of carpenters in New York is a good sound, the sound of a growing America.
- 59:29For the construction business is the nation's biggest industry, a bellwether of our economy.
- 59:35The money you save at an insured savings and loan association helps your neighbors finance homes. It is the lifeblood of the construction industry.
- 59:43Insured savings and loan associations finance one third of all home construction, providing jobs for carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers, wheelers,
- 59:54income for hundreds of factories which supply the materials and go into these homes, everything from mail to appliances.
- 1:00:02And part of this money in turn is spent in retail stores everywhere.
- 1:00:07So it's good to know that when you save at an insured savings and loan association real money, in addition to earning excellent returns for you,
- 1:00:15helps your neighbor own homes, build better communities, and stimulate all business.
- 1:00:28Well Jim, so far the fans here at Green Bay have had a lot to cheer about.
- 1:00:33They certainly have. It's been a well-called game so far and on the part of quarterback Mark Dahr, he has mixed them up just perfectly here.
- 1:00:46Diagonian preparing to kick off a giant deep bend. Gators and wells are up at the 10 yard line. There's the kick. This one will drop wells and it will take it up to 10, comes to the 15, 20, swings to the left, 25, to the 30, and down at the 32 yard line under a host of tackers.
- 1:01:05To give you an idea, for those of you who do not get a chance to follow professional football regularly, as the Green Bay Packers are now on defense, here are some of the sizes. Willow Davis, 240.
- 1:01:17Dave Hanner, 260. Henry Jordan, 250. Bill Flinman, 250. The front four.
- 1:01:21Vaughn Backer, Sam Curry, 240. Ray Nischke, 235. Bill Foster, 240. Y.A. Tittle is still a quarterback. The Giants again go into a spread with only wells behind the quarterback Tittle.
- 1:01:35And Tittle fakes the pass. He throws at it and he's far away out to the left flat as Willie Davis put a tremendous rest on Y.A. Tittle.
- 1:01:46Willie Davis is a fellow who blocked that pass that was intercepted just a moment ago before the series that carried Green Bay in for their second touchdown.
- 1:01:57Davis is putting a great deal of pressure on Y.A. Tittle from his defensive left hand position.
- 1:02:04Tittle, that time I believe Jim, had visions of throwing a little screen off to the left and throw a well, but the ball was 92 yards behind him.
- 1:02:12Second down, Giants from their own 32. Again they go into a spread. Webster to the right, Walton to the right, Roke to the right.
- 1:02:19Fading to pass is Tittle. Pretty good protection. Throws over the middle and it is way over thrown. Intended for Walton, Newark, Nischke, Whitson, and we're all back there.
- 1:02:29And Tittle was on target that time to the extent that on the infield free pass it will be third in pass.
- 1:02:36Second quarter has about 10 minutes remaining. Here at Green Bay Wisconsin, if you join this late, the Green Bay Passers lead the New York Giants by a score of 14 to nothing.
- 1:02:46On a touchdown run by Horning, a pass thrown from Starr to Dowler, two extra points, but successfully by Horning.
- 1:02:54The Giants come out of the hollow. They are not in the spread this time. Wells and Webster are both in running position, third in pass.
- 1:03:03Tittle fakes the pass. He's looking. He's looking over the middle. He throws and headed for Roke.
- 1:03:09Here's the Giants, 35 and down he goes.
- 1:03:11The Giants really do intersect at this field on a pass intended for Roke.
- 1:03:18The Tigers have their second interception. They have the ball at the Giants, 36 yard line, first and 10.
- 1:03:25There's only one way to stop for Cattus in this league. You've got to put pressure on them because they're all great and that's just what the Green Bay Packers have done to why Tittle here this afternoon.
- 1:03:37They have put tremendous pressure on him and as a result they are ahead 14 to nothing.
- 1:03:43The Packers offensive unit is ready. To the left McGee, to the right Dowler. Kramer on the left side as a tight end. Ron Kramer.
- 1:03:52It is straight ahead Jimmy Taylor trying to find running room. He comes to the outside to the 32 yard line.
- 1:03:58Before he is hit down by Dick Lynch and Jim Patton. Jim Taylor running off to his left.
- 1:04:04Tom Scott was in on the play as well. For the Giants, Jim Scott Carriage, 240 from Dayton.
- 1:04:09Dick Mosolesky, 260 from Maryland. Rosie Greer of Penn State, two manys.
- 1:04:14230 pound Andy Robesetti. That's the front four.
- 1:04:16Chris Liddings, from UCLA. Sam Hough of West Virginia. Tom Scott of Virginia, the Linebackers.
- 1:04:22Hewitt Barnes of Purdue. Joe Morrison is in there as well.
- 1:04:26From Cincinnati. Jim Patton of Mississippi. Dick Lynch from Notre Dame.
- 1:04:33That's the Giants defensive unit on second down six.
- 1:04:37Snap of the ball. Paul Horning at the right side. Big Hoyle to the 26 yard line before he is hit down.
- 1:04:42A quick opener. Pat Carriage wrestles down Horning who hit him very quickly.
- 1:04:48And then Hough's come in to help as well.
- 1:04:51It will be a third and one at the 27 as the ball is spotted. 20 yards in, near side of the field.
- 1:04:58Second quarter has about eight minutes remaining. The Packers are leading the Giants 14 to nothing.
- 1:05:02Green Bay with the ball. Third and a long one at the Giants 27.
- 1:05:08To the right, Dowler. To the left, McGee. But McGee this time will only split out about five yards.
- 1:05:17Giants heavily masked up front. Snap of the ball. Jim Taylor at the right side.
- 1:05:21Fikes his way to the 25 and then maybe a little bit more.
- 1:05:24It will be close for first down. Big pile up. Pat Cavie, Moldzilevski.
- 1:05:30The Linebacker on that side. Cliff Livingston. All in on the play. They're still on pilot.
- 1:05:36Let's see where they spot the ball. We're going to have a measurement.
- 1:05:46Jim, how in the world before a game starts one can predict breaks like we have had today.
- 1:05:51And the team capitalizing on them is why it's so difficult to even try and predict the outcome of a game like this.
- 1:05:57In the next football league I don't think anybody can make any sort of a prediction.
- 1:06:03It's well known around this league that any team can beat any other team on a given day and oftentimes that is stopped at.
- 1:06:10But I think that anyone who has watched this league long enough must agree on it.
- 1:06:15These are just tremendous football players on both sides here this afternoon and of course all around the NFL during the regular season.
- 1:06:24It's been proven week in and week out.
- 1:06:26The roar of the crowd told us it was a first down at the 25 yard line. Rain bays out of the huddle and ready to go again.
- 1:06:34Snap of the ball. Pitch back to Taylor coming to the outside. He cuts at the 25.
- 1:06:38He's at the 20 out of bounds at the 20 yard line.
- 1:06:41As he's belted out by Dick Lynch and actually came out of bounds backwards.
- 1:06:45The big play that time, the big block that time was thrown by Fuzzy Thurston.
- 1:06:50Inside of that block then moved Taylor to pick up about five yards. Will bring up second down five.
- 1:06:56As Taylor came out to his left to the near sideline with the Packers moving right to left here in the second period.
- 1:07:03While spotted in bounds marker, near side of the field, second down five, Green Bay at the top 20 yard line.
- 1:07:09With a little better than seven minutes unofficially remaining in the first half and the Packers leading 14 to nothing.
- 1:07:15Line to the right, Dowler. To the left, McGee. Lynch covers McGee. Barnes is on Dowler.
- 1:07:20That's the way it looks at the moment.
- 1:07:23Ball snaps, star fades, is at the pass, hands off to Horne and he goes ahead on a half back drop right to about the 17 yard line.
- 1:07:30Wrinkled down by Big Dick Modzelecki.
- 1:07:36It appears that Horne will be short of a first down by about two yards.
- 1:07:41Although there's still one piling.
- 1:07:44The ball is spotted at the 17. It'll be third and about two.
- 1:07:49At the risk of being repetitious here, it is Star who deserves just more credit I guess that I can give him up here for his wonderful ball handling.
- 1:07:59And of course his faking and play calling has been outstanding, at least in my opinion so far today.
- 1:08:07Our big third down, two plays about to unfold.
- 1:08:15Ball snaps, Paul Horne off the right side, makes his cut and he dives to about the 15.
- 1:08:21He actually just dove and burrowed his way to about the 15 yard line.
- 1:08:28We will watch the referee and the headlinesman to see if it is a first down. It is!
- 1:08:37When you have a fullback such as Jim Taylor, the fans, especially Green Bay fans, consider him of course a real powerhouse, which he is.
- 1:08:46He's considered all around the lake and Paul Horning is not considered a power runner.
- 1:08:52I think mostly because of Jim Taylor banging that back for a little bit, he's got 20 power too.
- 1:08:58The Packers come out of the huddle and are set at the line of scrimmage. McGee left, Dowler right.
- 1:09:05Star takes his to Taylor off the left side and he goes for just a couple to about the 13.
- 1:09:11Greer, Robustelli there for medium.
- 1:09:14The Packers offensively, as in Curie alignment, have Bob Staronski, Fuzzy Person, Jim Ringo,
- 1:09:22Forest Greg, Norm Masters, Ron Kramer, doing the bulk of the blocking up front.
- 1:09:28Max McGee, the split left end.
- 1:09:30Dark Star, Paul Horning, Jim Taylor, Boyd Dowler rounding out the backfield.
- 1:09:35Tom Moore is up and sort of jumping up and down in front of the Packer bench in front of us and we may see him in a moment.
- 1:09:41He is a backfield replacement for the Packers.
- 1:09:44Down at last play, two yards at most, second down eight at the giant 13 and a half.
- 1:09:51Star face to pass, looks, goes over the middle for Taylor at the five, touchdown.
- 1:09:56Over the middle. Now the last time, Jim, when Star hit Kramer the last time on the way to a touchdown,
- 1:10:15he was a tight right end and broke over the middle.
- 1:10:18This time he lined up at the tight left end, broke over the middle, was hit at the five,
- 1:10:22but carried his man into the end zone for a touchdown. Horning will try to add another point.
- 1:10:26The ball is down, kicks in the air, it's good.
- 1:10:29There's time out on the field with a score.
- 1:10:32The Green Bay Packers 21, the New York Giants nothing.
- 1:10:37You know what, Charlie, I've just come from labor and I think there's something wrong with us.
- 1:10:47Get mine.
- 1:10:48You know that family really made the work. Well, those guys gave them the counter and they're sure they're going to learn a situation
- 1:10:55and that's how they paid for it.
- 1:10:57But Marge, I will.
- 1:10:59Not going to be any extra charge. If they can do it, I will.
- 1:11:03But Marge, I will.
- 1:11:05All you do is go in and open an account and then add another one.
- 1:11:10Your savings are in kind of huge.
- 1:11:12But Marge, I will.
- 1:11:14But Marge, I have an account at an insured savings and loan association.
- 1:11:25What? How?
- 1:11:27That's what I've been trying to tell you.
- 1:11:30But Marge, there's no reason you can't open one too, in your own name.
- 1:11:36Two accounts in a family are better than one.
- 1:11:39Here at Spenny Stadium in Green Bay, Wisconsin, along with Jim Leeming, this is Ray Scott.
- 1:11:45And so far, and I always like to qualify things in a situation like this, Jim, so far the Packers have certainly been our most impressive ball club,
- 1:11:54but for no other reason because they've been able to capitalize on the breaks that are coming their way.
- 1:11:59They have that, and this league, they would count either team out, no matter what the score is, until that final whistle blows.
- 1:12:06Good, I could hear them getting ready to kick off, Ray.
- 1:12:10Now, you can come to the ball.
- 1:12:12This kick will be taken by Wells at the 11th, to the 15, 20, right side, 25, swing to the left, to the 30,
- 1:12:19touches way to the 39-yard line.
- 1:12:21Nitchie has him there, along with Dan Curry and Lee Fulton.
- 1:12:30So the Giants will have the ball.
- 1:12:32They have been optimized so far by two-fives interceptions.
- 1:12:35Both led to touchdowns, and Charlie Connery will be in as quarterback as you predicted he might be.
- 1:12:45Connery wearing tennis shoes sends the Giants into a strength formation strong right.
- 1:12:51Connery fades the pass.
- 1:12:53He looks.
- 1:12:54He has time.
- 1:12:55As long as that isn't here, it is going to be falling at the 43-yard line of the Giants, harmlessly,
- 1:13:02as Dave Connery puts tremendous pressure on Connery.
- 1:13:07And Jim, once again, the pressure being put on the passer, whether so far it be Chidler or Connery,
- 1:13:14by this forward wall of the Packers has been just unbelievable.
- 1:13:18As I mentioned a while ago, Ray, the only way you can stop these great passers,
- 1:13:22that's make them throw it as quick as you possibly can, and that's just what Green Bay has done this afternoon.
- 1:13:28Unofficially, we have the Giants completing two of 11 passes and have had two intercepted.
- 1:13:34Both led to touchdowns.
- 1:13:35Second and 10, Giants from their own 38 moving left to right.
- 1:13:39Connery, snap of the ball, fades, he gets the pass, handed off to Webster on a drop way off the left side.
- 1:13:44Next he's way to the 45-yard line.
- 1:13:47Alex Webster, running with tremendous power, is finally there at the top 45-and-a-half, or six-yard line,
- 1:13:54again of near seven.
- 1:13:56Webster getting up a bit slowly.
- 1:13:58He was hampered somewhat by injuries through the season, but he had a great year,
- 1:14:02ranking only behind Jimmy Brown and Jimmy Taylor as a leading rusher in the National Football League,
- 1:14:07third down and three.
- 1:14:08Packers lead 41-0.
- 1:14:10Second quarter has about two minutes remaining.
- 1:14:13Giants moving left to right with a third and three, and the veteran Charlie Connery,
- 1:14:1814 years in the league from Ole Miss.
- 1:14:21He sends Roke to the right, Schauffler to the left.
- 1:14:24Wells and Webster behind him.
- 1:14:26Now they move up to the right again on a spread.
- 1:14:29Webster moving to the right.
- 1:14:31Finally fades the pass.
- 1:14:32A penalty marker is down.
- 1:14:33He is going for Walton, and Willie Wood almost intercepts as he breaks it down at the 17-yard line,
- 1:14:39but a penalty marker was dropped.
- 1:14:43Joe Walton, the former fifth star, tight end, broke downfield.
- 1:14:48Willie Wood that time covering him along with Hank Griminger.
- 1:14:52The ball was broken down, but the penalty is against Green Bay.
- 1:14:56Referee George Renick indicating offside.
- 1:14:58It gives the Giants a first down, their third of the game.
- 1:15:01It comes to midfield.
- 1:15:03First down the Giants at midfield.
- 1:15:06First down the Giants at midfield.
- 1:15:08Ball 20 yards in, far side of the field, three and a half minutes left in the first half.
- 1:15:12Packers leading by 21-0.
- 1:15:14Touchdown run by Hornan, two touchdown passes by Starr.
- 1:15:18One to Dowler, one to Ron Kramer.
- 1:15:20Extra points by Hornan.
- 1:15:22The Giants are up to the line.
- 1:15:24Bill King is in the backfield now in place of Webster, formerly played at Vanderbilt.
- 1:15:29Snap of the ball.
- 1:15:30Connelly fades the pass.
- 1:15:32He has a lot of time.
- 1:15:33Flows out to the left, and it is in and out of the hands of Rose at the 45-yard line of Green Bay,
- 1:15:38and the left is black to the far sideline.
- 1:15:42Bill King, he also, hampered by injuries much of the season, plays his collegiate ball at Vanderbilt.
- 1:15:49He is in the backfield replacing Alex Webster, and as we told you a moment ago,
- 1:15:53Webster got up very slow after going about seven yards on a draw play.
- 1:15:58Joe Wolfe just looked about a fraction of a second too late on that one because he was,
- 1:16:04he was pretty well open and the check hit him just about right too,
- 1:16:08but he had looked back just a fraction of a second too late.
- 1:16:13Second down, ten at midfield for New York.
- 1:16:15Walton this time lands up way out to the right.
- 1:16:17He's outside of Rhoades as Connelly fades the pass.
- 1:16:20Look, he is throwing for Rhoades.
- 1:16:22He's down the middle and it is caught, and he is tackled at the 15-yard line.
- 1:16:26A beautiful catch by Kyle Rhoades right over the middle,
- 1:16:30and it was Willie Wood defending and helping on the tackle along with Hank Rementer and the Giants.
- 1:16:35And their first real threat of the game with a first down as the veteran Charlie Connelly,
- 1:16:40as he has done so often, rallies the Giants forces with a drive that moved to the packer 15,
- 1:16:46first and ten with a little over three minutes left in the first half,
- 1:16:49and Green Bay leading by 21 to nothing.
- 1:16:52Whistle on the field.
- 1:16:54Connelly is going to the bench to talk apparently to Ali Sherman.
- 1:17:00So we are going to have a brief wall in activities here.
- 1:17:04So we tell you right now that we have ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:17:14This is WGY-WGF and good afternoon.
- 1:17:22Well, Jim, it is amazing how Charlie Connelly time and time again can come off that bench
- 1:17:30and rally the Giants just when they need him most.
- 1:17:35Charlie has done it so many times over the years for the New York Giants,
- 1:17:39that the New York Giants fans just expect him to do it.
- 1:17:44In other words, when he comes in there, they say, well, Charlie will pull it out for us,
- 1:17:47and he has done it with us so many times.
- 1:17:50On that last pass reception by Kyle Rhoades, I would guess about now that Kyle has warmed up.
- 1:17:58He dropped a couple in the first quarter when he was warming up,
- 1:18:02but he has a great pair of hands, and he very seldom drops a one anywhere near him.
- 1:18:07And on that one he was well covered, actually, by wood.
- 1:18:10I think from here on in, if they get a near him, he is another old pro,
- 1:18:18and a true old pro too, a guy that the fans have come to count on,
- 1:18:23the Giants fans have, and he has done the better, lets them down.
- 1:18:28And so the Giants are ready, and are up for the line, going to the right.
- 1:18:34Shot to a tight left end, Kyle Rhoades a pointer on the right side.
- 1:18:38Snap of the ball, Phil King on the draw to the left side.
- 1:18:40He is at the 15, he is at the 10, he is at the 8-yard line going off to the left.
- 1:18:45Phil King, finally nailed by Bill Quinlan and Ray Mitchke.
- 1:18:50A good game as Phil King moves inside the Packer fan going to the far side line.
- 1:18:55Ball spotted at the inbounds marker.
- 1:18:57Far side of the field at the Packer 8-yard line, and it is second down three.
- 1:19:01A little better than two minutes left in the first half, the Giants have plenty of time.
- 1:19:05Here is the score, they trail 21-0.
- 1:19:07The Packers striking early.
- 1:19:11Kyle sends his Giants up to the line.
- 1:19:13Webster is back in the backfield now, Alex Webster, shot near to the left.
- 1:19:18Snap of the ball, off to the right comes Webster.
- 1:19:20He is down at the 6-yard line by Mitchke and Dan Curry.
- 1:19:26Close to a first down, within about a yard of a first down.
- 1:19:29Whistle on the field.
- 1:19:31The two-minute warning is about to be given to Vince Lombardi, the head coach of the Packers,
- 1:19:36and now to Ali Sherman, the head coach of the Giants.
- 1:19:39Two minutes remain in the first half.
- 1:19:42At Green Bay, Wisconsin, the Packers have a lead, 21-0,
- 1:19:47but the Giants are threatening with a third and one coming up at the Packers 6-yard line.
- 1:19:55Phil King is an exceptionally big guy for a halfback.
- 1:19:59He's just gone out of the game.
- 1:20:01He's six-four, weighs 225 pounds, and he's one of those fellows that the Giants
- 1:20:06hope and fully expect that someday he's going to develop into a real fine halfback,
- 1:20:12and he shows them plenty of steam as he took that ball and almost got away.
- 1:20:18The Giants are ready.
- 1:20:19Third and one up at the 6.
- 1:20:20Snapping the ball, and it is Webster coming up straight ahead,
- 1:20:25and he may or may not have the first down.
- 1:20:32Well, I noticed that Jolly Connerly is wearing his sneaks.
- 1:20:35He's the only one of the Giants, and he figured that he could do it better with the sneaks on,
- 1:20:41and he is wearing them out there now.
- 1:20:43I may have called the last ball carrier as Alex Webster.
- 1:20:46I think I did.
- 1:20:47It was Joe Wells, and he is now replaced by Geters.
- 1:20:49They did not make the first down.
- 1:20:51It is still fourth and one at the 6.
- 1:20:53The rookie Geters is in the backfield along with Webster, fourth and one at the 6.
- 1:21:02Ball is snapped.
- 1:21:03Out to the outside come Geters, looking for receiver throws, and he overflows,
- 1:21:08hits the hand of Holtz in the end zone, and it falls behind him in complete.
- 1:21:14Bob Geters swinging out to the right.
- 1:21:17Throw pass and headed for Roach in the corner of the end zone on the right.
- 1:21:21He hit the left hand of Roach, and the ball dropped mindlessly in the end zone as far as they're looking, sir,
- 1:21:26and it's a touchback, first down, Ken Greenbay from the 20.
- 1:21:29That was a good call by Jolly Connerly.
- 1:21:32He did catch the, in fact, he touched a little bit by surprise on that.
- 1:21:36They didn't expect Bob Geters to pass, and the color had gotten free,
- 1:21:40but he threw just a little bit too high for him.
- 1:21:43Greenbay takes over from their own county as they push back the first real threat of the Giants today.
- 1:21:49Star hands off to the right, Paul Horning to the 20, 25, to the 30, 35, 37-yard line.
- 1:21:55Paul Horning.
- 1:22:00Paul Horning off to the right, cut back beautifully, moved to the 36-yard line.
- 1:22:05A giant has been shaken up with about one minute left and a half,
- 1:22:10and this is going to require a timeout to be called for him,
- 1:22:13and Bart Starr is coming to the near sideline to confer with Vince Lombardi,
- 1:22:17and it is always, I think, perhaps a little unfair, Jim, to pick out one player or another,
- 1:22:22particularly at this point in the game, but I am truly amazed by the performance of Paul Horning
- 1:22:27with the somewhat limited time that he has had to practice.
- 1:22:30He seems to be the only back in there running from scrimmage that is having little or no trouble with putting,
- 1:22:39and he is wearing the cleated shoes, and as we mentioned before the ballgame started,
- 1:22:46the Giants had come out on the field for their pregame warmup with sneaks on.
- 1:22:51The Green Bay Packers had tried it earlier, actually before they had come out for their official pregame warmup,
- 1:22:59and Vince Lombardi, the coach, said that he just didn't feel that they were getting,
- 1:23:04or would have any advantage at all by wearing the sneaks,
- 1:23:07so they decided to go with the regular cleated football shoe.
- 1:23:11The Giants warmed up with the sneaks, and Coach Jolly Sherman undoubtedly made the same decisions
- 1:23:19as they are wearing the cleated shoes too, with the exception of Charlie Cuddery,
- 1:23:24and he is in there, and Jolly plays it pretty much the way he wants to as far as his equipment is concerned.
- 1:23:32You've been in this league a long, long time, and every time you watch him play,
- 1:23:37you just have to appreciate that a master at work.
- 1:23:42One of the truly great defensive backs in professional football,
- 1:23:49Jimmy Patton was shaken up on that last play in his seventh year from the University of Mississippi,
- 1:23:56and although on his feet is leaving the game,
- 1:23:59he'll be replaced by a rookie back from Arnold, Alan Webb, 5'11 and 1'80.
- 1:24:06First down, Green Bay, at their 37-yard line.
- 1:24:09Time is in. We're ready to go.
- 1:24:10Dowler to the right and he to the left.
- 1:24:12Tom Moore is in the backfield along with Horning.
- 1:24:14He is in there in place of Jimmy Taylor.
- 1:24:19Snap of the ball.
- 1:24:20Horning to the left side.
- 1:24:21Touch to the 40, 45-yard line.
- 1:24:25Horning running beautifully behind fine offensive blocking.
- 1:24:29Moves for seven yards, and it will be a second down, three, at the packer 44.
- 1:24:34The Packers immediately call a timeout to conserve the time remaining here in the first half.
- 1:24:39On the first half, 52 seconds.
- 1:24:41Score, Packers 21, Giants nothing.
- 1:24:44If you join the slate, the first touchdown of the game, scored by Horning,
- 1:24:47six and one-half yards after a scoreless first quarter on the first play of the second period.
- 1:24:52A pass interception by Nitske at the Giants 34 set up the second touchdown.
- 1:24:57A pass from Starr to Dowler of 13 yards.
- 1:25:00Hank Reminger intercepted a pass at the Giants 36-yard line.
- 1:25:05Mark Starr hit Ron Kramer with a 13-yard scoring pass.
- 1:25:09Horning converted after every TD, and it's 21-nothing right now, and we're ready to go.
- 1:25:14Second down, about three.
- 1:25:15Green Bay at their own 44 moving right to left.
- 1:25:18Dowler to the right.
- 1:25:19Kramer a tight left end.
- 1:25:20McGee outside him. He's quick left.
- 1:25:24Giants with a five-man line right now on second down three.
- 1:25:29Starr hands off to Tom Moore off the right side.
- 1:25:31He pikes his way through about the 48-yard line.
- 1:25:33He might have a first down.
- 1:25:35Cat Savage and Sam Huck make the stop.
- 1:25:38Forward progress near the 48.
- 1:25:40We'll watch the referee, George Reynolds.
- 1:25:45First down as indicated.
- 1:25:47Green Bay a first down as the clock is running.
- 1:25:54And end of the game for the Packers goes Ken Eyman, number 53, a second-year player from southeast Missouri.
- 1:26:04He goes onto the field, and he is coming immediately out.
- 1:26:10The Packers just at this point give an indication of how they feel about this ballgame, although they have a 21-nothing lead.
- 1:26:20They certainly aren't putting that away.
- 1:26:22They could have, I suppose, as a matter of fact, they could have had just 26 seconds left in the first half.
- 1:26:29They could have run out the clock, but they decided on calling time out and perhaps going for that big one to get it at halftime here with maybe 28 points if they possibly could.
- 1:26:39The Giants have other ideas, and time is brought back in, so back to race guy.
- 1:26:45Tom Moore, for those of you who have not followed the Packers this year, is in his second year.
- 1:26:51They're back in there now in place of Jim Taylor, and Tom played at Vanderbilt.
- 1:26:55Second, rather first down, Green Bay at their own 48, to the right, Dowler to the left, McGee.
- 1:27:01Star, couch, under center, calls the Green Bay signals and fades back to pass.
- 1:27:08He is looking, he is throwing for Kramer, and he has it at the 35-yard line.
- 1:27:1330-yard line, 35, pulling, making way to the 15-yard line.
- 1:27:18The clock is running. The Packers may not have time for another play. They're hurriedly lining up.
- 1:27:26The Giants are trying desperately to get onside with seconds left.
- 1:27:29First down, quick pass, penalty flag is dropped.
- 1:27:33The scoreboard clock shows two seconds remaining in the half.
- 1:27:37The Packers are trying to line up. The Giants are trying to line up.
- 1:27:41A timeout is right now in effect because the penalty flag was dropped,
- 1:27:45and apparently there are seconds remaining, and Green Bay, with a five-yard penalty now being assessed against the New York Giants for offside,
- 1:27:54will have a chance at a field goal.
- 1:27:56Horning will attempt it. Star will hold, tangled to the right from the Giants, 17.
- 1:28:04We're just about ready. A lot of confusion there for a moment.
- 1:28:07Star is in holding position. Horning is ready.
- 1:28:11Ball is snapped, the ball is down, the kick is in the air.
- 1:28:14It's good.
- 1:28:22That's the end of the first half with the score.
- 1:28:27The Green Bay Packers, 24.
- 1:28:30The New York Giants, nothing.
- 1:28:33Both of the teams have come back on the field, and we're getting ready with these fans about to leave the field,
- 1:28:46so we'll be set to go with a second-half kickoff in just a moment.
- 1:28:54While we have a minute here, let's see how well you know your football.
- 1:28:57You've heard of some long passes, but do you know who threw the shortest touchdown pass of them all?
- 1:29:03Think hard, and while you're thinking.
- 1:29:24Here's the answer, Eddie LeBarrick.
- 1:29:27Last year with the Dallas Cowboys, he threw a touchdown pass from the two-inch line.
- 1:29:32Sometimes the little ones count in a big way.
- 1:29:35Here's another one for you.
- 1:29:37What's the filtered cigarette with the unfiltered paste?
- 1:29:40That's easy. Marlboro.
- 1:29:43We're in a mess tonight with a can of Marlboro.
- 1:29:58Interesting statistics, a couple of them on the first-half action here.
- 1:30:03The Green Bay Packers recorded seven first downs to one for the New York Giants in rushing and passing.
- 1:30:12The Packers have five, and the New York Giants have two.
- 1:30:17Yards gained rushing net 101 for the Packers and four for the Giants,
- 1:30:23and yards gained passing net 106 yards for the Packers and 45 for the Giants.
- 1:30:30So we've seen a great effort in the first half of this ballgame by the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:30:38They were up, they were ready, and I can assure you too that the New York Giants were just as ready and just as up.
- 1:30:46The Packers have capitalized on a couple of pass interceptions.
- 1:30:51The line play has been just about all you could ask for from any team defensively,
- 1:30:58especially from this Packer defensive unit.
- 1:31:04We're going to pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:31:15Well, as the teams get ready for this second-half action, let's go over for the second-half starting lineup, Van Ray Scott.
- 1:31:24Thank you again, Jim.
- 1:31:25The roar of the crowd for the Packers as they take their position.
- 1:31:31The last band entertaining here at halftime is still on the field, although down at the goal line to the left.
- 1:31:39The Packers have taken their position as they are about to receive their first kickoff of the day,
- 1:31:46because they kicked off at the start of the game, and leading by 24 to nothing, of course, the Giants have not kicked off yet today.
- 1:31:54The first band to receive for Green Bay as they have been most of the year will be Tom Moore and Herb Adderley.
- 1:32:01Tom from Vanderbilt his second year, Adderley a first-year player from Michigan State.
- 1:32:10The Giants are getting set to kick off, and the band is leaving the field.
- 1:32:16We almost had three games here, Jim, including the band.
- 1:32:21They had a halftime activity, and they weren't going to quit until they were finished with it.
- 1:32:25That's all the work to it.
- 1:32:29Kicking off will be Pat Sumerall, the veteran place kicker for the Giants.
- 1:32:36He, of course, played at Arkansas.
- 1:32:42The country, George Rennix, is still holding up play because, oh, I'd say 15 or 20 of the bands, then, are at the goal line to our left and behind the New York Giants.
- 1:32:53And again, the sun is shining.
- 1:32:55Although don't get me wrong, there's no heat wave in Green Bay.
- 1:32:59All things considered, it's just about as much as we could hope for.
- 1:33:02We're ready to go.
- 1:33:04Sumerall comes to the ball.
- 1:33:06His kick is high and fairly short.
- 1:33:09It will land at the 20, be picked up and taken to the 25, 30, 35, and down falls Ray Nitsky.
- 1:33:16I do believe.
- 1:33:18That's right, Ray Nitsky, who played some pullback in his football career, although known in professional football as a linebacker, takes the short kickoff,
- 1:33:29moves it to the Packers' 36-yard line, and we're trying to cut, he falls down.
- 1:33:33The Packers have the ball from their own 36 moving right to left, and this second half is underway.
- 1:33:38And Jim Patton, we are happy to tell you, is in there defensively for New York.
- 1:33:43He was shaken up in the first half.
- 1:33:45Jim Taylor is at pullback, Horning at a halfback, star of the quarter, Dowler to the right, McGee to the left.
- 1:33:51Long count by Bart.
- 1:33:53And off to the left comes Horning.
- 1:33:54He cuts and comes for about three to the 38.
- 1:33:58Greer, Scott, Rosie Greer, Tom Scott, team up to make the stop.
- 1:34:03Kane on the play, as the ball is spotted just one yard to the 37, and it's second down nine.
- 1:34:10The Giants with Kat Kavich, Mosolevski, Greer, and Robustelli up front.
- 1:34:15Livingston, Huff, and Scott, the linebackers.
- 1:34:18Barnes, Morrison, Patton, and Lynch are the deep men.
- 1:34:23Second down nine, star has the Packers ready.
- 1:34:29Snap of the ball, Bart Starr off to the left after a fake is going to run.
- 1:34:34He's at the 35, 40, 45, flag down, Giants 41-yard line, fumbles, the ball is loose, picked up by the Giants.
- 1:34:41Jimmy Patton, swing, squeeze left to the Giants 40, goes to the 45.
- 1:34:45I remind you a penalty flag was dropped.
- 1:34:47And down goes Patton at the 42-yard line.
- 1:34:52Barnes made the tackle on Starr.
- 1:34:55A penalty marker was dropped as the ball was snapped.
- 1:34:59It was against Green Bay, declined, of course, by the Giants.
- 1:35:03And here is the first break of the game, I do believe, Jim, that we could say has gone to the Giants.
- 1:35:09That's right.
- 1:35:10The Giants on that play took a page out of the Packer book in the first half and put the rush on Bart Starr,
- 1:35:18but he ducked under him and took off.
- 1:35:21We have a bit of confusion because some members of the Packer offense are not leaving the field,
- 1:35:27they're coming back on the field.
- 1:35:29And the ball is picked up by the referee and is being placed now at the Giants 47-yard line.
- 1:35:35The Packer's offensive unit is going back on the field.
- 1:35:39And apparently one of the officials had blown the ball dead.
- 1:35:42Jim, that's all I can figure at this moment because at the Giants 47 is where Starr hit the ground.
- 1:35:48That I remember. There seems to be no question about it now that one of the officials had indicated to the Giants
- 1:35:54that it was their ball, but another one had blown it dead up there on the 47-48 yard line,
- 1:36:03before the 47-yard line.
- 1:36:05So as confusion reigns here for just a moment, it's going to be squared away,
- 1:36:14and it's going to be the Green Bay Packers ball. There's no question about that.
- 1:36:19And even Beth, the New York Giants are mighty unhappy about it.
- 1:36:22Kyle wrote the offensive captain of the Giants is having a discussion down there as to what did happen.
- 1:36:35I see now that the linesmen, now not the headlinesmen, but the linesmen are now moving as if the ball is going to be placed
- 1:36:42somewhere around the Packer 41-yard line. And all I guarantee you right now is confusion.
- 1:36:49I admit to being confused. And the ball now, instead of being at the Giants 47,
- 1:36:54is being taken back to near the Packer 40, now the 35-yard line, illegal procedure.
- 1:37:01Against Green Bay has been indicated by one of the officials, but Andy Robustelli of the Giants,
- 1:37:06one of their captains isn't satisfied. He's now asking for further explanation from the officials.
- 1:37:11I'll assure you that 36 players and coaches on each squad are a little bit confused at this time here,
- 1:37:19but the officiating of the National Football League is truly outstanding, and it's squared away right now.
- 1:37:27It is Green Bay's ball. There's no question about that.
- 1:37:30It's their ball. They've lost five yards on an illegal procedure penalty,
- 1:37:34and it's first and 15 Packers from their 35-yard line. The play was dead.
- 1:37:40In other words, when the ball was snapped, nothing counted after that the way it turns out.
- 1:37:45So we're set to go. White Star calls signals from the Packer 35, gives to Hall Horning,
- 1:37:50cuts off to his right, cuts in at the 35-40, 45-yard line. Hall Horning, hit down finally by Sam Hubb
- 1:38:00and Erich Barnes, in on the play, 10 yards. Second down, five, Green Bay from the 45.
- 1:38:09Again, great blocking by the Green Bay offensive line.
- 1:38:12Strung Horning loose at the line of scrimmage as he made his cut back toward the middle.
- 1:38:19Second and five, Green Bay from the 45. Second half just underway, Packers leading 24-0.
- 1:38:25Medina to the left, Dowler to the right, Ron Kramer a tight left hand.
- 1:38:29Giants dig in, Packers are ready. Long count by Stars, snapped with the ball, straight ahead.
- 1:38:35Kramer runs into Huff, game on the play, yard and a half. Huff hit him high.
- 1:38:43Then he back, forward progress, a gain of one at most.
- 1:38:48It'll bring up third down and a long four. Packers ball, they're 46.
- 1:38:53And a key third down play comes up. No scoring here in the second half. Green Bay leading by 24-0.
- 1:39:00They play slight lull in the activities now as Jimmy Ringo came to one of the officials to ask a question,
- 1:39:08but were quickly set to go.
- 1:39:11The Packers lead on three first half touchdowns, two on passes by Stars, one on a run by Horning
- 1:39:17and a field goal by Horning on the last play of the half.
- 1:39:20They lead 24-0. Dowler to the right as the Packers come out of the huddle.
- 1:39:24McGee to the left.
- 1:39:26Third down and a long four. Green Bay from their own 46.
- 1:39:32Snap of the ball. Stars falls down, gets up, throws quickly, and it's off target by a good margin.
- 1:39:38Bart that time trying to backpedal and pass, fell down, got up, but his pass intended for McGee,
- 1:39:43a quickie out on the left flat, was far short of its target. It is incomplete,
- 1:39:47and the Packers will apparently be forced to punt.
- 1:39:51This will be, to my best recollection, Jim, just the second punt of the game by Green Bay.
- 1:39:57That's right, and the Star is getting fine protection and has the entire afternoon to this point.
- 1:40:06Wells and Morris are deep for the anticipated punt by Boyd Dowler.
- 1:40:10The pass from center. The kick is partially blocked. It is going to land on the giant 45,
- 1:40:16rolls to the 40. It is picked up by one of the giant linemen, Ray.
- 1:40:21It is humbled now, and one of the Packers tried to go for the ball,
- 1:40:25but the Giants wind up with it near their own 40. That was Larry Hayes, a rookie from Vanderbilt,
- 1:40:30who picked up that partially blocked punt, but it went beyond the line of scrimmage.
- 1:40:35Hayes picked it up, humbled, recovered by the Giants. New York has the ball,
- 1:40:39their own 41-yard line. It's amazing how things even out.
- 1:40:42It was near their own 41 a moment ago that the Giants apparently had the ball,
- 1:40:47although they did not. Connerly at quarterback wearing the sneakers.
- 1:40:56Back to Connerly. He pays the pass. He throws out on the left flat to Webster,
- 1:41:00spins away from one man, but he's submerged at the 35-yard line.
- 1:41:05A quick pass in the left flat as Connerly first takes a handoff, threw out to the left,
- 1:41:12trying to take advantage of the tremendous defensive charge in Green Bay
- 1:41:16and set up some sort of a screen pass. There is a loss of the play of five yards,
- 1:41:21second down 15. Giants moving left to right from their own 35.
- 1:41:25Third quarter has about 10 minutes left. Packers lead 24-0.
- 1:41:29Rope to the right, Schoenker to the left. Baiting the pass, Connerly.
- 1:41:33He gives to Webster and down he goes on a draw play.
- 1:41:36Loss, four yards. A tremendous defensive charge led by Dave Hanner,
- 1:41:43the veteran tackle for Arkansas for the Packers. Loss on the play, four yards.
- 1:41:48It will be third and 20. So this time instead of the screen,
- 1:41:55Connerly tried to take advantage of that defensive charge and set up the draw play,
- 1:41:59but Hanner was waiting. Third and 20, the Giants from their own 30-1.5.
- 1:42:04To the right, Rope to the left, Schoenker.
- 1:42:08Snapping the ball, Connerly baits the pass.
- 1:42:10There's time. He's throwing over the middle and it is Walton with the ball
- 1:42:14and he catches it at midfield. He's hit down almost immediately.
- 1:42:17He may be short of a first down. The ball will be spotted.
- 1:42:25Right on the 50, it will be fourth and about one. Score, Packers 24, Giants nothing.
- 1:42:33Time left in the third period, a little better than nine minutes.
- 1:42:37A new unit comes in led by Don Chandler, the punter.
- 1:42:43The Packers are dropping back Willie Wood and Luke Carpenter if indeed it is to be a punt.
- 1:42:50Third quarter still has nine minutes left unofficially.
- 1:42:54It is in punt formation. Morrison is in front of him blocking for him by about eight yards.
- 1:43:01Pass from center and it is a punt and it's a beauty.
- 1:43:05To the left corner, it will land at the 15 and go out of bounds.
- 1:43:09Deep in Packer territory at around the 14 or 15-yard line,
- 1:43:13the Packers will have the ball on a 24 to nothing lead.
- 1:43:17It will be Star, Taylor, Horning, Dowler, McGee, Ron Kramer, Bob Sturavsky, Norm Masters,
- 1:43:28Forrest Gregg, Fuzzy Thurston, and Jim Ringo for Green Bay.
- 1:43:31The offensive unit, the Giants, will have Kat Kavage, Motaleski, Greer, Robis Kelly,
- 1:43:37Livingston, Huff, and Scott the linebackers, Barnes, Morrison, Patton, and Lynch, the four deep men.
- 1:43:42First down Packers from their 14 and a half, moving right to left.
- 1:43:47Snap, off to the left side comes Taylor and he is down for a loss of about a half yard,
- 1:43:53trying to slant out to the left.
- 1:43:56Tom Scott, the right linebacker of the Giants from Virginia, made the defensive play.
- 1:44:02Apparently at halftime, the defensive coach of the Giants must have felt that the linebackers,
- 1:44:10especially, were committing themselves too quickly in that first half,
- 1:44:14and they seem so far in the third period here to be waiting just a fraction of a second longer
- 1:44:19before committing themselves.
- 1:44:22It winds up no gain and second down 10.
- 1:44:25To the left McGee, to the right Dowler, with about eight minutes left in the third quarter
- 1:44:30and the Packers leading the Giants 24 to nothing.
- 1:44:33Star fades to pass.
- 1:44:35He throws out to the right and penned it for Horning.
- 1:44:37It is short and incomplete.
- 1:44:39A tremendous rush that time put on by Rosie Greer and Jim Catcavey.
- 1:44:45Four star to throw before he planned.
- 1:44:48It is incomplete and Tom Moore comes into the Packer backfield.
- 1:44:53He'll replace Jimmy Taylor.
- 1:44:55It'll be third and 10, the Packers.
- 1:45:00The hand is for Jimmy Taylor, who has performed so well for Green Bay throughout the entire season.
- 1:45:08Packers, third and 10 play coming up deep in their own territory.
- 1:45:12McGee will be splitting about six, seven yards of left end.
- 1:45:15Dowler, wide Packer to the right side.
- 1:45:20Star gives to Paul Horning.
- 1:45:22He goes out to the right.
- 1:45:23He's going to make his cut.
- 1:45:24He comes to the 20 and that's all.
- 1:45:27About five yards for Horning and it will be fourth and five as Erich Barnes,
- 1:45:33the former Purdue player, made the main defensive move for New York and in goes the kicking team.
- 1:45:40Now the last time the Packers punted, Boyd Dowler's punt was partially blocked.
- 1:45:48He is in there again to punt.
- 1:45:52We believe that Bob Sims, who played at Rutgers, is responsible for partially blocking the last punt.
- 1:45:59Dowler will be kicking from the five.
- 1:46:01Pass through center, big rush for the Giants.
- 1:46:04This kicks away.
- 1:46:05It's tremendous.
- 1:46:06He is going to drive Morrison back over his hand.
- 1:46:09He drops the ball.
- 1:46:10He is going for it at the 22-yard line.
- 1:46:12It's loose.
- 1:46:13Everybody's fighting right now.
- 1:46:30Forrest Gregg recovered that punt as Joe Morrison going backwards saw the ball roll off his fingertips.
- 1:46:39Joe Wells tried to go for it.
- 1:46:42A 60-yard punt winds up being fumbled by New York, recovered by the Packers' Forrest Gregg.
- 1:46:49And so the Packers now have come up with two pass interceptions and now the recovery of a fumble.
- 1:46:55First down Green Bay at the Giants' 22-yard line, far side of the field at the inbounds marker.
- 1:47:00Starr asks the crowd to be quiet.
- 1:47:04Tom Moore straight ahead finds a big hole, fights for the 20- to the 15-yard line.
- 1:47:09Hit down by Sam Huff, a quick opener behind blocking for the right side of the Packer line.
- 1:47:15Ringo, Masters, and Gregg.
- 1:47:18Forward progress, 16-yard line.
- 1:47:25Gain of six, second down four.
- 1:47:30About six minutes left in the third period.
- 1:47:32The Packers leading 24 to nothing.
- 1:47:34There has been no scoring in the third quarter.
- 1:47:37Dowler goes to the right as the Packers break out.
- 1:47:40Tom Moore and Paul Horning lining up behind Starr.
- 1:47:43Max McGee is to the left.
- 1:47:51Ball is snapped.
- 1:47:52It is Paul Horning going straight ahead, fumble at the 15-yard line.
- 1:48:00Horning fumbled as he was hit.
- 1:48:02After a gain of about one, players on file, let's see who's on the ball.
- 1:48:10The Packers apparently recovered. The ball will be spotted just nose of the ball over the 15.
- 1:48:15Norm Masters, I believe, fell on him.
- 1:48:19Gain of one, third down three.
- 1:48:23A little over five minutes left in the third period.
- 1:48:26Will Diskelly, that time in Greer, forced the fumble with their hard tackle of Horning.
- 1:48:32Third and three at the giant 15.
- 1:48:35Horning looks over the giant defense, snap of the ball, takes on a runoff to the right throws instead,
- 1:48:42and it is batted down and almost intercepted by Barnes at the five-yard line.
- 1:48:49That time Starr wanted to hit Horning, but his pass was off target,
- 1:48:55and Barnes grabbed the ball and threw it to the ground disgustedly
- 1:48:59because he was unable to hold onto the ball with an apparent sure interception within his grasp
- 1:49:05and saw the field goal kicking in and is on the field.
- 1:49:08You know, Barnes really hates himself when I'm a drag.
- 1:49:11Oh, boy.
- 1:49:12Spot down and three, and Starr will hold.
- 1:49:17For Horning's apparent attempt at a field goal at the giant 22, the ball will be placed.
- 1:49:25Ball is snapped down, kick is in the air.
- 1:49:28It's good.
- 1:49:31There's time out on the field with a score.
- 1:49:34The Green Bay Packers 27, the New York Giants nothing.
- 1:49:39Hey, wait a minute.
- 1:49:52I thought it was Filder, Flavor, Flip Top Box.
- 1:49:55No, that's the old song.
- 1:49:57Now, Marlboro comes in a king-size soft-tac too, so they changed the words.
- 1:50:02You gave them up, you liked them, but you didn't buy them.
- 1:50:07You didn't buy your friends, but you didn't buy them.
- 1:50:11Same cigarette?
- 1:50:12Same good Marlboro flavor, both ways.
- 1:50:15Some people like the soft-tac, some like the box, so we give them a choice.
- 1:50:20Fits right into the song, too, doesn't it?
- 1:50:23You gave them up, you liked them, but you didn't buy them.
- 1:50:29You didn't buy your friends, but you didn't buy them.
- 1:50:35Marlboro, the filter cigarette with the unfiltered taste.
- 1:50:45With about five minutes left in the third period, the Green Bay Packers Ben Agagenian is about to kick off.
- 1:50:51The Giants deep men are Joe Wells and Bob Gators.
- 1:50:55As the Packers lead 27-0.
- 1:50:57Ready call it breaks or whatever you want.
- 1:50:59It really heads up football, but a couple of fast interceptions
- 1:51:03and a tremendous kick by Boyd Dowler led to the scoring by the Packers.
- 1:51:08Agagenian's kick is a very deep one.
- 1:51:11It is into the end zone.
- 1:51:13It will be over the end line.
- 1:51:14Gators watch as it roll over the end line for a touchback,
- 1:51:17and the Giants will have the ball at their own 20-yard line.
- 1:51:21And the quarterback will again be the veteran Charlie Connerly.
- 1:51:26We'll pick up the other members of the New York Giants offensive unit.
- 1:51:30Alex Webster, number 29, will be in there.
- 1:51:33Joe Wells, the first year back from Clemson.
- 1:51:37Kyle Rhoades will be the flanker.
- 1:51:40Del Schachtner and Joe Walton, the ends.
- 1:51:42Rhoades goes to the right.
- 1:51:43Schachtner to the left.
- 1:51:44The Giants set from their own 20.
- 1:51:50Connerly fades to pass.
- 1:51:52Gives ground, throws a screen out to Webster.
- 1:51:54He comes and he is hit from behind and down at the 25-yard line.
- 1:51:58Out on the right flat, a quick screen with Kyle Rhoades leading the blocking.
- 1:52:04Henry Jordan caught him from behind.
- 1:52:06Game on the play at 5 yards, second down 5.
- 1:52:09Third quarter, Packers lead 27-0.
- 1:52:12Here in Green Bay, Wisconsin, with a little better than 4 minutes left in the period.
- 1:52:16That's unofficial.
- 1:52:17In the National Football League, the back judge keeps the official time.
- 1:52:24Up front, the interior linemen for New York, Roosevelt Brown, Darrell Dess, Ray Whitecker,
- 1:52:29Mikey Walker, Jack Stroud, second down 5, New York on the 25.
- 1:52:35Connerly fades to pass.
- 1:52:37He's looking.
- 1:52:38He's throwing out to the left and it is off the left hand of Joe Walton,
- 1:52:42an incomplete out of bounds at about the 42-yard line of New York.
- 1:52:45Curry and John Simac over the cover.
- 1:52:49Walton got his left hand on it, but that's all.
- 1:52:51Third and 5.
- 1:52:534 minutes left in the third period.
- 1:52:56Packers lead.
- 1:52:58Webster goes out.
- 1:52:59Phil King comes in, a change in the offensive backfield of New York.
- 1:53:04The only scoring here in the second half.
- 1:53:07Paul Horning's second field goal of the game.
- 1:53:09From 22 yards out, it was set up when the Giants fumbled a punt,
- 1:53:14and the Packers, Forrest Gregg, recovered.
- 1:53:18Phil King, along with Wells, lining up behind Connerly on third and 5 from the Giants,
- 1:53:2325 and Connerly fades to pass.
- 1:53:25He looks.
- 1:53:26He's being chased.
- 1:53:27He throws and it is almost intercepted by Bill Forster at the 30,
- 1:53:32and it's incomplete.
- 1:53:33It was intended for Wells.
- 1:53:34But Willie Davis, again, put tremendous pressure on the passer.
- 1:53:39We have unofficially the Giants completing 6 of 19 passes with two intersections,
- 1:53:47and the Packers defensive unit has been mighty tough today.
- 1:53:51So it's fourth and 5, and the Giants' Don Chandler is in to punt.
- 1:53:57Willie Wood, the new carpenter, are deep for the Packers.
- 1:54:02The punt will come from about the Giants' end.
- 1:54:04The ball will snap to Chandler.
- 1:54:06The punt is away.
- 1:54:08It is off to the left.
- 1:54:10Fair catch by Willie Wood at the Packer.
- 1:54:1241-2 yard line.
- 1:54:14He is run into, and a penalty flag is dropped.
- 1:54:25A penalty is being measured against the Giants,
- 1:54:28as Willie Wood was run into after signaling for a fair catch and making the catch.
- 1:54:35First down, the Packers at the Giants, 43-yard line, after the penalty is measured off.
- 1:54:43Bart Starr, Paul Horning, Tom Moore, Lloyd Dowler, the Packer to the right,
- 1:54:50McGee is split left, Ron Kramer tight left end.
- 1:54:55The Giants are faced. The pass goes to the right to Dowler, has it at the 40, to the 40-35.
- 1:55:00A lot of bounds at about the 32-yard line.
- 1:55:03Barnes made the tackle, a quick pass as Dowler went about five yards with a stationary target,
- 1:55:09star hitting perfectly.
- 1:55:11Hand on the play as to the Giants, 32-yard line of 11 yards and a Packer first down.
- 1:55:18Late in the third period, just under four minutes remaining,
- 1:55:22Packers leading by 27-nothing.
- 1:55:27The ball is at the inbounds marker on the far side of the field.
- 1:55:30The shadows begin to creep across City Stadium here at Green Bay,
- 1:55:34covering about perhaps a third of the field right now.
- 1:55:38Only Dowler is out wide. He's to the right side.
- 1:55:44Tom Moore, rather, Paul Horning straight ahead to about the 26-yard line.
- 1:55:49Andy Robuskelly was the first to meet Horning, blocking lead by Staransky, Thurston.
- 1:56:04Game on the play, about six yards, second in a long four at the Giants 26-yard line.
- 1:56:13Out of the huddle come the Packers and out to the right goes Dowler to the far side line.
- 1:56:17On the open field side, split wide by about 10 yards, is Max McGee.
- 1:56:25Star fades to pass. Has good protection. He's throwing for Dowler.
- 1:56:29He has it at the Giants 13-yard line.
- 1:56:34Barnes shoved him out of bounds.
- 1:56:38Dowler that time took that pass and Jim, he couldn't have been more than inches inside that sideline.
- 1:56:45He was just in there and here is Barnes, of course, figuring he was out,
- 1:56:50but the official was right on it, right along the sideline there.
- 1:56:54As he caught the ball, he did have it in bounds, definitely, and then stepped out after he had clear possession of the ball.
- 1:57:00The Packer drive continues on a first down of the Giants 13-and-a-half.
- 1:57:05Again, to the right, Dowler to the left, McGee.
- 1:57:07Horning and Tom Moore behind the quarterback, Star.
- 1:57:10He's got the snap of the ball. Off to the left is Horning looking for a receiver. Still looking. He's throwing for McGee.
- 1:57:15And it is just off his hand in the end zone of the left corner.
- 1:57:20That time Horning threw with somebody grasping at his leg and he had a awful lot of time here.
- 1:57:28Paul Horning is playing one of his better games.
- 1:57:32Although he's played a lot of great ones over the years here in Green Bay.
- 1:57:36And, incidentally, his mother is sitting right below us here.
- 1:57:40Do you know that she's mighty proud of her son this afternoon?
- 1:57:43I'm sure she's had many afternoons in college and as a professional football player, she's had a great deal of pride in his.
- 1:57:50Tom Moore comes out. Jim Taylor goes in. Second down, 10 Green Bay at the Giants 14.
- 1:57:58So it's Horning and Taylor now behind the part, Star.
- 1:58:01Star fades to pass, has good protection, being rushed from the one side.
- 1:58:05It goes now for Ron Kramer. Touchdown!
- 1:58:09Ron Kramer in the left corner. Got behind the defensive back. Star hitting beautifully.
- 1:58:17Ron Kramer has his second touchdown.
- 1:58:22As he went down and out to his left to the corner of the end zone.
- 1:58:27Star has fired his third touchdown pass. His second to Kramer.
- 1:58:37Horning will try to make it 34.
- 1:58:41Ball is down. It's kicked. The penalty flag is dropped.
- 1:58:45Referee Rennox is waiting. It's good. The penalty was against the Giants.
- 1:58:50There's time on the field with the score now.
- 1:58:53The Green Bay Packers, 34. The New York Giants, nothing.
- 1:59:01If you know your pro football, you probably know the answer to this.
- 1:59:07When you name the famous lineman who's now a big name in Major League Baseball,
- 1:59:12be careful now. This question can fool you. While you're thinking of the answer.
- 1:59:17Why don't you settle back? Then have a close way to smoke the lineman back.
- 1:59:24We're going to die in four.
- 1:59:27Make yourself feel the way that you should.
- 1:59:30Don't have a lot of oil left to feed your friends.
- 1:59:34Who was that lineman? Cal Huddred. Today he's the chief umpire of the American League.
- 1:59:39But from 1927 to 1936, he was an all-co tackle with the Packers and the Giants.
- 1:59:45Now here's another one. What's the filter cigarette with the unfiltered taste?
- 1:59:49You guessed it, Marlboro.
- 1:59:52You get a lot to like with a Marlboro.
- 1:59:57I can say, slay the snack or buck.
- 2:00:07Well, Jim, so far in this game, there's just no doubt about it.
- 2:00:10It's been the Packers' day and they just can't seem to do anything wrong.
- 2:00:16Team effort is the desire of every coach and every football player and every football fan, too.
- 2:00:21And we're seeing it here.
- 2:00:24Eleven men or 22 men defensively and offensively for the Green Bay Packers this afternoon.
- 2:00:29Then Ikegenian kicks. Joel Wells takes it up to ten.
- 2:00:34Comes to the 15, 20, swings to the left, 25, to the 30, to the 35, 34-yard line, and there he's down.
- 2:00:42Elijah Fitz and Willie Wood are there to make the play.
- 2:00:48The Giants ball first down at their 34-yard line.
- 2:00:51If you join this way, we will tell you that the Giants threatened once in the first half.
- 2:00:56And on fourth and goal from the Packers six, a pass fell incomplete.
- 2:01:01That's been their biggest threat. Why a Tittle is back in a quarterback.
- 2:01:05Behind him are Phil King and Bob Gators.
- 2:01:11And Tittle asks the crowd to be quiet. The referee joins him.
- 2:01:16The fans in Green Bay today, and I guess we should have the praise that Jim, understandably so,
- 2:01:22have so far had an awful lot to cheer about.
- 2:01:25Certainly have. People often wonder why a quarterback will do that, ask the fans to be quiet.
- 2:01:32And you've heard of audibles, and perhaps you wondered what that meant.
- 2:01:36He changes occasionally the offensive play when he comes up and looks over the defense.
- 2:01:42We're ready to go now. Why a Tittle looks over the defense.
- 2:01:44Jack Ball there at 34, moving left to right, late third quarter.
- 2:01:48Packers lead 34-0. Tittle fades, throws to Kyle Rhoade in the right flat.
- 2:01:52He fumbles, and the ball is recovered.
- 2:01:56First by a Packer, then a giant is on it, and it's a giant ball up there on 48.
- 2:02:01Joe Walton winds up with the ball. The pass was two-rode.
- 2:02:07Rule complete. One tackle fumbled.
- 2:02:11One of the Packers, Tom Venice, was on the ball. He slid off.
- 2:02:15Joe Walton was done and was caught. A giant ball.
- 2:02:18What an effort by Joe Walton. He was about 10 yards away, but he just never gave up.
- 2:02:23He had a chance to get that ball, and he dove on it.
- 2:02:26It's a giant first down at the giant, 48.
- 2:02:29To the right rope, to the left, Schoffner, and fading to pass Y.A. Tittle.
- 2:02:33He throws, and it is complete to Schoffner. He's at the Packers 40.
- 2:02:37He's at the 32-yard line, and down he goes at the 34-yard line.
- 2:02:42Del Schoffner is hit by Tittle, and the Giants are on the move.
- 2:02:46Willie Wood makes the tackle. First down, New York.
- 2:02:48Forward progress ruled the Packer 32-yard line.
- 2:02:51About a minute left in the third period.
- 2:02:54Giants desperately trying to get in there for a score.
- 2:02:58They trail, 34-0, with just about a minute unofficially left in the third quarter.
- 2:03:03Y.A. Tittle back at the helm as he was at the start of the game.
- 2:03:07Schoffner splits to the left side. Cow rope flanks right.
- 2:03:11Now they go into a spread formation, strong to the left.
- 2:03:15Tittle fades, tries to hand off, falls down at the 39-yard line.
- 2:03:21Tittle, that time, faking a handoff to the only back who had lined up behind him.
- 2:03:27That was Pop Gators.
- 2:03:29Fell down, boss on a play, from the 32, from the 39, a 7-yard, second down 17,
- 2:03:36and only seconds remaining, according to the scoreboard plot, in the third period.
- 2:03:41That star has thrown three touchdown passes.
- 2:03:45Horning has run for another.
- 2:03:47Horning has kicked two field goals and has converted successfully after every six pointer.
- 2:03:54The Giants break out on second and 17 from the Packer 39.
- 2:03:58The Giants moving left to right and looking into the sun.
- 2:04:01Schoffner's to the left and rope to the right.
- 2:04:04Tittle throws quickly to Schoffner.
- 2:04:06He catches it, gets away from one man, and he is going to be hit down at the 31-yard line by Willie Wood.
- 2:04:10A quick pass, Tittle to Schoffner, running a slant in from his left end position.
- 2:04:16He ain't on the play to the 31-yard line of 8 yards, third down and 9.
- 2:04:21And we may not have time for another play.
- 2:04:24In this period.
- 2:04:29There's the gun.
- 2:04:30That's the end of the third quarter with the score.
- 2:04:33The Green Bay Panthers, 34.
- 2:04:35The New York Giants, nothing.
- 2:04:38The third quarter has been brought to you by Marlboro.
- 2:04:41The filler cigarette with the unfiltered taste.

- 2:05:52This is WG Rise Connector.
- 2:06:01The fourth quarter, Green Bay, Wisconsin, along with Jim Leeming, Ray Scott on hand,
- 2:06:08Giant Ball third and nine at the Packer 31 and Tittle fades the pass.
- 2:06:12He's throwing it on the right flat.
- 2:06:13It is incomplete.
- 2:06:15It was overthrown at the 15-yard line.
- 2:06:17Intended receiver Kyle Rhoades.
- 2:06:19It fell incomplete.
- 2:06:20It will be fourth down and nine.
- 2:06:23YA Tittle at quarter.
- 2:06:25Phil King and Bob Gators in running back position most of the time.
- 2:06:30Although the Giants have gone into what I have referred to, Jim,
- 2:06:34for want of a better phrase, quite frankly, as a spread formation,
- 2:06:38which sees only the one running back in position actually to take a handoff from the quarterback
- 2:06:42as they have moved either strong right or strong left,
- 2:06:45moving the other back out as an actual inside flanker.
- 2:06:49Northbound, nine.
- 2:06:51Giant Ball out to the right rope to the left.
- 2:06:55Schoffner.
- 2:06:56Now it is Walton splitting out more to the right.
- 2:06:58They're in the spread, strong to the right.
- 2:07:00Tittle fades the pass.
- 2:07:01He has a little bit of time, but not how he goes at the 40-yard line.
- 2:07:06Willie Davis, Dave Hanner, Bill Quinlan.
- 2:07:13YA Tittle that time, in all honesty, just never had a chance.
- 2:07:17It appeared for a second that he was going to get that pass away,
- 2:07:21but right about then, Hanner was the first to lead him.
- 2:07:24And down he went, and this Packer defensive unit has given the ball over to the offense.
- 2:07:29Green Bay Ball, first down at their 40,
- 2:07:32and the Packers defense has been just tremendous so far, Jim.
- 2:07:36Davis must get a big pat on the back from Coach Vince Lombardi
- 2:07:39after the ball game that he's played today defensively.
- 2:07:43Moore and Horning are behind Star.
- 2:07:46Moving left to right, it is Horning trying to go off the left side,
- 2:07:50and it's no gain. Horning, the second man through.
- 2:07:55Hit down by Kim Katkiewicz.
- 2:08:00Forward progress to 40, although Horning was eventually wrestled back about four yards by Jim Katkiewicz.
- 2:08:09No gain, second down 10.
- 2:08:11Early fourth quarter from Green Bay, Wisconsin,
- 2:08:14the National Football League's championship game has seen the Packers so far
- 2:08:20play just about as sharp a game as you'd ever see anybody play anywhere.
- 2:08:26Star has the team set, second and 10 from Green Bay's 40.
- 2:08:31Pitch to the left, to Tom Moore trying to go wide, gets away from one man,
- 2:08:34is wrestled down for a loss of 35 by two Moore.
- 2:08:38A loss of five at the 35, I should say.
- 2:08:41Dick Lynch first to meeting, Sam Huff helped pin him down.
- 2:08:45Tom Scott there as well.
- 2:08:47Loss of five, third and 15.
- 2:08:51In the second half, the Packers have scored 10 points.
- 2:08:56Jim Taylor goes into the game.
- 2:08:58He'll be in the Packer backfield.
- 2:09:01Tom Moore will come out.
- 2:09:03The clock's showing a little better than 13 minutes left in the contest.
- 2:09:07The hand you hear in the background is for Tom Moore.
- 2:09:10Third and 15, Green Bay from their own 35, to the left McGee, to the right Dowler.
- 2:09:18And Star fades to pass, straight back right over the middle to Horning.
- 2:09:21He's at the 40, 45, 48.
- 2:09:24He'll be short of a first down by about a yard.
- 2:09:27A quick pass over the middle as Horning worked himself free.
- 2:09:31He is finally coupled by Joe Morrison and Sam Huff.
- 2:09:36And getting up very slowly is going to be Sam Huff.
- 2:09:40Horning tried to help him through his feet as it will be fourth and about one.
- 2:09:48And anticipating a punt, Joe Morrison will be dropping back along with Joe Wells.
- 2:09:55And Dowler will punt from about the Green Bay 35-yard line with about 12 and a half minutes left in the game.
- 2:10:02Pass to the center.
- 2:10:04The kick is away.
- 2:10:05It's end over end.
- 2:10:07Fair attack at the giant 20 by Joe Morrison.
- 2:10:12Giants will have the ball at the 21 as the ball is spotted.
- 2:10:16Let's see who the giant quarterback will be.
- 2:10:20It will be Y.A. Tittle.
- 2:10:25Y.A. Tittle will be in the backfield as quarterback.
- 2:10:29Phil King will be at one position.
- 2:10:33We'll see if it's going to be Gators or Wells at the other.
- 2:10:37Alex Webster, who was hampered a bit by injuries several games ago, has not played very much today since early in the game.
- 2:10:46Snapping the ball, hitting the pass is Tittle.
- 2:10:49He's looking.
- 2:10:50He's throwing deep for Schoffner and Wittenden intercepts.
- 2:10:53He is being wrestled all the way back to the Packer 20-yard line by Schoffner.
- 2:10:59And as Wittenden, matching Schoffner's stride for stride, puts the ball away from him.
- 2:11:06There's third interception.
- 2:11:09Green Bay has the ball.
- 2:11:12And Jim, I think the folks would be interested in that little piece of paper that was just handed to us.
- 2:11:21Well, the paid attendance here today, 39,029.
- 2:11:25This is a record Green Bay crowd.
- 2:11:28It's above the capacity of the stadium here because of the temporary seats which have been installed for this championship game.
- 2:11:35First down, Green Bay at their own 38-and-a-half-yard line.
- 2:11:39That's where the ball was spotted.
- 2:11:40That's where it was intercepted.
- 2:11:41Star throws quickly to Dowler.
- 2:11:43He drops it in the right flat.
- 2:11:47Tempers flare for a moment as Barnes and Huck and Dowler had a difference of opinion.
- 2:11:54It is merely an incomplete pass.
- 2:11:56The officials immediately take over.
- 2:11:58It'll be second and ten, Green Bay, from their own 38-and-a-half-yard line.
- 2:12:02Early in the fourth quarter, Green Bay leading by a score of 34-0.
- 2:12:11Ball at the inbounds marker near side of the field, out to the right, Dowler, to the left, McGee.
- 2:12:16Horning is in the backfield along with Tom Moore.
- 2:12:23About a six-man giant line as Huck moves right into that line right now.
- 2:12:28Top to the left is Tom Moore across the 40-to-about-the-42-yard line.
- 2:12:33He's hit up right by Huck and Morrison.
- 2:12:38Forward progress will be spotted.
- 2:12:40Let's see.
- 2:12:41The ball will be placed down at the 41-yard line.
- 2:12:44Let's call it again a three-and-third-down seven.
- 2:12:49Ray, if you could boil this down to one word, I think that you could say the Packers had momentum today,
- 2:12:55and the New York Giants just haven't been able to get on track with but a very few exceptions.
- 2:13:02We're ready to go, third and seven.
- 2:13:06Snap of the ball.
- 2:13:07Penalty flags are down all over the field.
- 2:13:15We'll watch the referee.
- 2:13:18They've drawn at least three markers down.
- 2:13:20The penalty is against New York, five yards.
- 2:13:24Ball placed down at the 46.
- 2:13:26Upside indicated it will be third and now about two instead of third and seven.
- 2:13:34Giants defensive unit, Kat Kavich, Modzelewski, Greer, Robus Kelly,
- 2:13:38Livingston, Huff, Scott, Darnes, Morrison, Patton, Wich.
- 2:13:45Third down to Green Bay from their own 46.
- 2:13:48Fourth period, Packers lead 34 to zero.
- 2:13:52To the right, Dowder, fairly tight left end, McGee, Ron Kramer, a tight right end.
- 2:14:00Starr takes to the first man, gives the horny.
- 2:14:03He goes to midfield to the guy at 47.
- 2:14:06Kicking his way beautifully behind a tremendous offensive charge by that line led by Forrest Gregg this time.
- 2:14:15Gregg in front of the ball carrier, first down Green Bay at the giant 47-yard line.
- 2:14:23Tom Moore comes out of the game for Green Bay.
- 2:14:35The second game is Jimmy Taylor and it's a draw play to Taylor.
- 2:14:38He's at the 45, 40, 35.
- 2:14:41He's at the 30, swings to the right, 25, 20.
- 2:14:44He hits Barnes and goes out of bounds at about the 13.
- 2:14:54A draw play to Jimmy Taylor.
- 2:14:59Jim went straight ahead, he's on to the right, no to the 14-yard line.
- 2:15:04Green Bay has another first down, Jim.
- 2:15:07On the play, Jim had a scarcity of blockers, but the couple that he had out ahead of him,
- 2:15:12he certainly used them well in gaining about 10 or 15 extra yards with the use of those couple that he had out there with him.
- 2:15:2132 yards for Taylor, first down Green Bay at the giant 14.
- 2:15:29Starr gives the horny, swings to his left.
- 2:15:31He is going to be down at the 20-yard line for a loss of six as Andy Robustelli, playing defensive right end beautifully,
- 2:15:39turned the play in and helped make the tackle at the same time with a bend from Kat Kavich.
- 2:15:46Loss of six, second down and now 16 Green Bay on the giant 20 with about nine and a half minutes left in this championship game
- 2:15:55and the Packers leading by 34 to nothing.
- 2:16:02Bart Starr directing a beautifully diversified Green Bay attack has used just about every weapon
- 2:16:08in the arsenal created by Vince Lombardi and his staff to score today.
- 2:16:15To the left, McGee to the right, Dowler on second down, 16 at the giant 20.
- 2:16:19And Starr fades the pass, throws out to the right to Horny, behind blockers, he cuts it to 20,
- 2:16:24goes to the 15, drives to the 12.
- 2:16:29A quick flip in the right flat behind a sprain of blockers, a Dowler, Masters, Ron Kramer making the tackle,
- 2:16:38Dick Mozaleski, game on the play, eight yards, it will be third and a long seven at the giant 12.
- 2:16:47Perhaps eight would be closer to correct.
- 2:16:51Starr allowed the rush, flipped to Horny, game to the seven.
- 2:17:06Starr fades the pass, has time, looks, he's throwing to the corner for Kramer, it is incomplete at the goal line.
- 2:17:14Joe Morrison defending in the left corner, it will be fourth down, the kicking unit comes in.
- 2:17:20And he has been successful today from the 17 yard line and from the 22 yard line with field goal attached.
- 2:17:28He is two for two.
- 2:17:30The ball will be placed down, I believe I set it to seven, I beg your pardon.
- 2:17:34It was at the 12 yard line that play started, but it is fourth down and about eight.
- 2:17:40And Starr will be in holding position from about the giant between the 19 and 20 yard line and angle off to the right.
- 2:17:51Ball is snapped down, kick in the air, it's good.
- 2:17:56There's time out on the field with the score.
- 2:17:59The Green Bay Packers 37, the New York Terrians nothing.
- 2:18:05It's the galaxy, for a new galaxy, teachers of the future night.
- 2:18:14You can see them, you'll be even more servicely, try for your maintenance, that may as well be the galaxy, for a new galaxy.
- 2:18:25There are challenges in the galaxy, but they're the best value of all, and they're more valuable than all.
- 2:18:36The galaxy will go 30,000 miles between major lubrication, 6,000 miles between oil changes and minor lubrication.
- 2:18:43You can see them, you'll be even more servicely, try for your maintenance, that may as well be the galaxy, for a new galaxy.
- 2:18:55There are two adventures here, the galaxy 500 and galaxy life.
- 2:19:05Now, at your Ford dealers.
- 2:19:12We're in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the scene of action, ladies and gentlemen, along with Jim Leaming, Ray Scott on hand,
- 2:19:17with about eight minutes left in this championship game.
- 2:19:20And the Green Bay Packers leading by a score of 37 to nothing, and Ben Agagenian preparing to kick off.
- 2:19:27We've had a cold day, but actually it's turned into a very beautiful day, with few exceptions, the sun has been bright and shining.
- 2:19:35And Agagenian's kick is fairly high, and at the six yard line is taken by Gators to the 15, to the 20, tries to go to the right,
- 2:19:43and is submerged at the 26 yard line.
- 2:19:46First year back, Bob Gators of New Mexico State, one of a host of first year players who have made good in the National Football League.
- 2:19:55Bob Gators, 5'11", 215, played in New Mexico State.
- 2:19:59The Giants will go with Y.A. Tittle at quarterback, from their own 26 yard line, inbounds marker, far side of the field.
- 2:20:07Y.A. Tittle has Webster back in the backfield now.
- 2:20:11First we've seen him in a long while.
- 2:20:13Humble, ball is picked up and followed on by a giant at the 22 yard line, Bob Gators.
- 2:20:19A humble on the snapback, loss on the play to the 22 as Bob Gators alertly fell on the loose football.
- 2:20:26Loss of four, second down, 14.
- 2:20:29And in from the giant bench across the way comes Bill King.
- 2:20:36Joe Schockner is the left end.
- 2:20:38Joe Walton, the tight right end.
- 2:20:40King is going to replace Webster.
- 2:20:42Bill King from Vanderbilt, 6'4", 225.
- 2:20:48To the left, Schockner.
- 2:20:49To the right, Rhodes, second and 14, Giants, number 22.
- 2:20:54Tittle fades to pass, gives ground, throws over the middle.
- 2:20:58It is complete to Schockner, tackled immediately by Jess Whittenton at the giant 36 yard line.
- 2:21:05First down, very close to a first down.
- 2:21:09Yes, now signaled first down at the giant 36.
- 2:21:13The clock is running with about seven minutes left in the game.
- 2:21:17The Packers lead by 37 to nothing.
- 2:21:22In what has so far been truly a team effort, perhaps we should say a squad effort, offense as well as defense.
- 2:21:32Tittle has the giant set.
- 2:21:35Fades to pass.
- 2:21:36He's rushed.
- 2:21:37He throws out to the right flat.
- 2:21:38It is in and out of the hands of Rhodes and incomplete.
- 2:21:41And Tittle that time was rushed unmercifully by Bill Quinlan and Ray Nitschke.
- 2:21:52Bill into the game goes the veteran, M. Tunnell.
- 2:22:00He's going to replace John Simank.
- 2:22:03And the hand is for Simank.
- 2:22:07Veteran M. Tunnell playing against the team for whom he performed so well for so many years.
- 2:22:16It is second and ten.
- 2:22:18Tittle fakes the pass.
- 2:22:20He's going to hand off on a draw play instead to Bill King.
- 2:22:24Loss of two yards.
- 2:22:25Bill Quinlan had it spotted and made the tackle.
- 2:22:29Loss of two.
- 2:22:30It will be third and M-12.
- 2:22:32M. Tunnell has played 14 years.
- 2:22:36It is his 14th year in the National Football League from the University of Iowa.
- 2:22:41And Jim, he is a great one.
- 2:22:45He wore the old clothes in the leg.
- 2:22:46He and the white.
- 2:22:47Tittle is in his 14th season too.
- 2:22:54It is third and 12.
- 2:23:00It's a spread to the right.
- 2:23:01Tittle fading to pass.
- 2:23:03It's a pass to the right intended for Rode.
- 2:23:06Intercepted by Grevenpierre and he drops the ball.
- 2:23:09He had it for an instant.
- 2:23:10And I do believe, Jim, that Kyle Rode looked directly into the sun's rays and never saw that football.
- 2:23:17The ball is not only in the sun at that time, but the ball is very, very hard to hold on to out there today.
- 2:23:24And the Giants, of course, have had more difficulty holding on to it than have the Green Bay Packers here today.
- 2:23:32Some of the players, I noticed the line, the interior linemen all wearing gloves.
- 2:23:37And on the defensive unit, quite a number of them are.
- 2:23:40It is fourth and 12 and Chandler is in the punt.
- 2:23:43Takes the pass from center.
- 2:23:45His punt is away.
- 2:23:47It is going to land at the packer 37 and will be allowed to roll three by Luke Carpenter and Willie Wood.
- 2:23:54And it will be blown dead at the packer 25 yard line where Green Bay will take over the ball.
- 2:24:01They first down at their own 25 yard line.
- 2:24:06And you know, one of the, Jim, one of the former Packer greats who wanted so very much to be here today,
- 2:24:12who has stayed on in Green Bay since his playing days, I'm talking about Ted Fritch,
- 2:24:17who coaches in Green Bay's Premontree High School, they tell me he had to be restrained by the doctor.
- 2:24:22He was seriously ill, but the doctor had to actually force him to stay home.
- 2:24:26And I know how much he wanted to be here today.
- 2:24:28First time Green Bay star pitches to Tom Moore, comes to the outside to the right,
- 2:24:32cuts behind a good block and is nailed at the 31 yard line.
- 2:24:35Quick pitch to Tom Moore behind a block by Ken Iman, who is in the game in the offensive line for Green Bay,
- 2:24:44tackled by Barnes.
- 2:24:46Ron Kramer is being replaced.
- 2:24:49Paul Horning comes out.
- 2:24:51Listen to the ovation for Horning.
- 2:25:03Truly thousands of people here got on their feet to give an ovation to Paul Horning
- 2:25:09as it's Green Bay's second and four from their 31,
- 2:25:12leading 37 to nothing over the Giants late in the ballgame.
- 2:25:17Elijah Pitts is in the backfield and it's Tom Moore straight ahead to the 35,
- 2:25:21spins to the 40 to the 42 yard line.
- 2:25:27First down Green Bay as Tom Moore finding daylight,
- 2:25:32actually twists it away from one tackler to give him an additional five yards.
- 2:25:38Out of the game comes Max McGee.
- 2:25:42With about four minutes left in the contest,
- 2:25:45Ron Kramer, Max McGee, Paul Horning have all departed to tremendous ovations
- 2:25:51of this obviously partisan crowd in Green Bay.
- 2:25:54First down of a tackler, 42, moving left to right late in the ballgame.
- 2:26:01Lou Carpenter is in. Elijah Pitts off the left side,
- 2:26:04will sprint to about the 44 and that's all.
- 2:26:11And evidently Ray, Coach Vince Lombardi in the closing minute here is trying to get as many into the game as he can
- 2:26:16and of course get the ovation for the great stars of the Packers this season.
- 2:26:22Boyd Dowler has just left to a great ovation and has been replaced by Lee Fulkens,
- 2:26:28a first year player from the University of Washington.
- 2:26:32Game of the play of the yard, second down, nine.
- 2:26:35Getting ready to go into the game at quarterback is Johnny Roach,
- 2:26:39former SMU star, second and nine Green Bay from their own 43.
- 2:26:47Long count by star, fades as if to pass, hands off the pitch, off the left side he fights to the 46.
- 2:26:54It'll bring up and into the game goes Roach.
- 2:26:58Out of the game, Bart Skars.
- 2:27:02Right on the field with a score of the
- 2:27:0537, the giant nothing.
- 2:27:09Close the door of the new Fairlane 500 and listen.
- 2:27:14It's the new sound of quality.
- 2:27:17Quality that's part of the totally new Fairlane 500 by Ford.
- 2:27:23Right, the Fairlane 500, right side, right side,
- 2:27:29right between the Galacty and Falcon.
- 2:27:32The Fairlane 2, the 62, the car that's just right for just about everybody.
- 2:27:40Just about everybody.
- 2:27:43Right, the new Ford Fairlane 500, right between Galacty and Falcon.
- 2:27:50Right size, I'll put shorter on the outside, good car room on the inside.
- 2:27:55Right price, price below many compacts, the car that's just right for just about everybody.
- 2:28:01Test the quality yourself.
- 2:28:03Close the door of the new Fairlane 500.
- 2:28:08That's your Ford viewers now.
- 2:28:15Elijah Fitz just swung out to the right and lost a couple of yards for Green Bay.
- 2:28:19And on fourth down coming up, Boyd Dowler is in the pot.
- 2:28:23The Giants are going to drop back Joel Wells and Joe Morrison in trend safety.
- 2:28:29And I see right now Ray, both the benches are being given the two-minute warning.
- 2:28:35And in order to be able to pick out the outstanding player,
- 2:28:41as far as the Packers were concerned today, would be a most difficult job.
- 2:28:46The Heart Star was just tremendous in every phase of quarterbacking this fine team.
- 2:28:53Of course, Paul Horning with the 19 points that he scored here today,
- 2:28:59have to make him one of the big ones too.
- 2:29:02But never forget those fellows up on the line who did such a marvelous job all afternoon,
- 2:29:07defensively, offensively, defensive backfield.
- 2:29:11I guess, as you said a short time ago, this would have to be a squat applause.
- 2:29:19I'm guessing right now.
- 2:29:23You're so right, Jim.
- 2:29:25And a tremendous tribute not only to the Packer coaching staff,
- 2:29:29but to the Packers fans who have supported this game so very well.
- 2:29:33Boyd Dowler is in the punt.
- 2:29:35Wells and Morrison back to receive.
- 2:29:37The punt's away.
- 2:29:38A tremendous boot is going to land in the giant five,
- 2:29:42rolled in at around the nine-yard line where it will be grabbed by Herb Adderley.
- 2:29:48Another tremendous punt by Boyd Dowler is down by first-year back Herb Adderley.
- 2:29:54There's time out on the field with a score.
- 2:29:56The Packers 37, the Giants nothing.
- 2:30:02Now here's the commercial with the twitch, the thousand twitch.
- 2:30:06You're going to get a new Falcon.
- 2:30:08A 62 Falcon.
- 2:30:09Everybody loves Falcons.
- 2:30:11So listen, Falcons.
- 2:30:13Stick me up on your Falcon.
- 2:30:16I'll be ready at eight.
- 2:30:19I'll be there with my Falcon.
- 2:30:22He'll have a wonderful ride.
- 2:30:24And I'll be right at your side.
- 2:30:26Economical Falcon.
- 2:30:29Costs no little to run.
- 2:30:31With the money we save with a Falcon.
- 2:30:34We can sure have a barrel of Fog.
- 2:30:38Everybody loves Falcons.
- 2:30:41Lots of reason to boast.
- 2:30:43Doesn't get more, more, more from a Falcon.
- 2:30:46The Colomerical loves them all.
- 2:30:50It's a man, it's a chamber, it's so economical.
- 2:30:53No price on that clock.
- 2:30:56Oh, Malcolm.
- 2:30:58Go to your foredealer.
- 2:30:59You will be welcome, Malcolm.
- 2:31:06The Giants are coming up now to about a third and about nine situation as why
- 2:31:13Fiddlejust misses on a pass out on the left flat on a down and out pattern to
- 2:31:17left end Bill Schopner, who had such a great season with the Giants.
- 2:31:21And you know, so many times, Jim, it seems to me with only seconds remaining here
- 2:31:26in this championship game that when a game does end as it seems to about to end
- 2:31:32with the Packers leading by a rather decisive score, we're inclined to forget
- 2:31:36the great job done by the Vapwish team during the regular season.
- 2:31:40And there's no doubt about it as the Giants now go into their version of the shotgun.
- 2:31:45Fiddle is back in a short punt formation.
- 2:31:47He's going to pass him near the goal line to the right flat.
- 2:31:50It is intercepted by Herb Adderley at the 30. He goes to the Giants 25,
- 2:31:56swings to the 20. He's going to try and turn the corner.
- 2:31:59He does. He goes to the 15-yard line.
- 2:32:03Herb Adderley comes up with the Packers' fourth pass interception of the game.
- 2:32:13Why is Fiddle passing out of Jim what I would call the Giants version of the
- 2:32:19highly publicized San Francisco 49er shotgun offense, finds Herb Adderley,
- 2:32:25the rookie from Michigan State, intercepting?
- 2:32:27And my goodness, what a jaw-hacking job this Packer defense has done today.
- 2:32:32They certainly have. As a matter of fact, on that play, one more block
- 2:32:36and Herb Adderley might have been going all the way.
- 2:32:43First down, Johnny Roach at quarterback. Tom Moore at left half.
- 2:32:50Roach trying to sneak straight ahead.
- 2:32:53Luke Carpenter is in the backfield. Time just rang out.
- 2:32:57Packers content to hold on to the ball.
- 2:33:00The crowd. Time counts off to seconds.
- 2:33:04New Year's Eve in Green Bay, Wisconsin is going to be something.
- 2:33:08No more time remains.
- 2:33:10There's the gun. That's the hint of the game.
- 2:33:14With the final score, the Green Bay Packers 47, the New York Giants nothing.
- 2:33:22We'll be back in a moment with the final wrap-up of today's game.
- 2:33:27Fans, how long has it been since you've driven a Ford?
- 2:33:30Today there are four classes of cars and only Ford has all four.
- 2:33:35First, there's the compact Falcon, America's lowest priced six passenger car.
- 2:33:40Over one million proud owners prove it's still America's most popular compact car.
- 2:33:46Next, the Ford Fairlane, available with Ford's famous VA car.
- 2:33:51It's in a class by itself, right between the compacts and the big cars,
- 2:33:55with the best features of both, big car room, ride, and performance.
- 2:34:01It's got savings and maneuverability and the price tag below many compacts.
- 2:34:06The third, or full-size class, is the elegant Galaxy with its optional
- 2:34:12super high performance Thunderbird engine.
- 2:34:15Galaxy will outperform America's most expensive cars,
- 2:34:19yet requires servicing only twice a year or every 6,000 miles.
- 2:34:24So, for the people who want the very finest, the Thunderbird.
- 2:34:29It's been four outstanding models.
- 2:34:32How long has it been since you've driven a Ford?
- 2:34:35Whatever you're looking for in a car, look to the long Ford line at your Ford dealer.
- 2:34:43Right, Jim Leaming, realizing that many of you did not have a chance to follow this game
- 2:34:48from its inception, we'll do our very best to pick out very quickly the highlights of this game.
- 2:34:55But let me tell you first, this is the fifth shutout ever recorded in a championship game.
- 2:35:02The last time it was turned in, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Chicago Cardinals
- 2:35:08in 1948 by 7-0, and the following year shut out the Los Angeles Rams 14-0,
- 2:35:15and until today, that's the last time it was performed in championship play.
- 2:35:20It turns out, and I guess perhaps, Jim, it might be justice of some sort,
- 2:35:25it is turned in, the shutout by...
- 2:35:29...the second quarter, climaxed an 80-yard drive, went in from 6.5 yards out,
- 2:35:38converted it to 7-0.
- 2:35:40A pass interception in the second quarter by Ray Nitschke at the jar at 34,
- 2:35:44found Bart Starr several plays later, hitting Boyd Dowler with a 13-yard scoring pass,
- 2:35:50Horning's extra point made it 14-0.
- 2:35:53Hank Dreminger came up with a pass interception at the jar at 36 in the second quarter.
- 2:35:58From 14 yards out, Bart Starr a few plays later hit Ron Kramer,
- 2:36:03who was certainly most impressive today.
- 2:36:06He hit him with a touchdown pass, Horning's extra point made it 21-0,
- 2:36:10and then Horning added a field goal on the final play of the first half
- 2:36:15to make it 24-0 as the only giant threat found a giant pass falling incomplete
- 2:36:21on fourth down from the Green Bay six-yard line.
- 2:36:24As it turned out, that was to be as close as the giants were to get today.
- 2:36:28In the third period, with five minutes and five seconds left,
- 2:36:33Forrest Greg, after recovering a fumble by the Giants,
- 2:36:36and with about five minutes left, Paul Horning added another field goal,
- 2:36:40this from 22 yards, it was 27-0.
- 2:36:43Bart Starr found Ron Kramer with another scoring pass,
- 2:36:46this one a 14-yard, with a couple of minutes left in the third period,
- 2:36:50that made it 33-0, and Horning's extra point made it 34-0.
- 2:36:54The only scoring in the fourth quarter, Paul Horning's 19-yard field goal
- 2:36:59to finish the scoring by a score of 37-0.
- 2:37:03Jim, that's about the way I would wrap up things this afternoon.
- 2:37:06There is one thing that I would like to say though,
- 2:37:09I touched on it briefly a moment ago, and I mean this
- 2:37:13as we pay tribute to Ali Sherman of the New York Giants.
- 2:37:16So many times the last sight of a particular athletic team is the one that you remember,
- 2:37:22and it's so easily to forget that the Giants had a truly great season
- 2:37:26with a team that was not rated of champion September
- 2:37:30to come on and win the Tough Eastern Division,
- 2:37:33and although the Packers won today by the short-out margin of 37-0,
- 2:37:37we would be remiss if we didn't pass along credit for their tremendous regular season
- 2:37:42to Ali Sherman and his New York Giants.
- 2:37:45We wish to thank our spotters today, Bill Kelly, who spotted the New York Giants,
- 2:37:51Bob Huell, who spotted the Green Bay Packers.
- 2:37:55Our engineer today was Dan Mosak.
- 2:37:58Our producer was Johnny Earp.
- 2:38:01And we're speaking for both Jim Leaning and yours truly, Ray Scott.
- 2:38:07Once again, the final score was Green Bay 37 and the New York Giants, nothing.
