- 0:03Speaker 2: Hi there, faithful listeners. Thank you for tuning into the
- 0:06Speaker 2: Bible Explain podcast on this lovely Monday morning and starting
- 0:09Speaker 2: your week outright by reading some Bible with me and
- 0:12Speaker 2: sharing a delicious cup of coffee. We'll be reading a
- 0:15Speaker 2: new chapter of the Bible today, Second Chronicles twenty two.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Stay tuned. I hope you guys have had a really
- 0:26Speaker 2: great week to start. I know that there was a
- 0:29Speaker 2: really terrible storm that hit most of the eastern side
- 0:32Speaker 2: of America, even down south got hit with snow and
- 0:35Speaker 2: ice and all sorts of terrible things and power outages.
- 0:38Speaker 2: So I hope you guys are all doing well now.
- 0:41Speaker 2: For us, it was really interesting because everyone knew this
- 0:44Speaker 2: storm was coming, and the weather men were essentially saying,
- 0:47Speaker 2: this is the storm of the century, and that's how
- 0:49Speaker 2: it was being portrayed. In fact, things in my area
- 0:52Speaker 2: were pre canceling stuff like three days ahead of time.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I'm hearing that classes are being canceled and people are,
- 0:59Speaker 2: you know, shutting the churches down on Sunday morning and
- 1:02Speaker 2: all of this stuff because of this storm that was
- 1:05Speaker 2: supposed to be really really bad. Like I can definitely understand,
- 1:10Speaker 2: you know, you guys down in Texas canceling stuff for
- 1:13Speaker 2: ice storms and snowstorms, and.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Everybody down south.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I get it because you don't experience this kind of weather.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But this is like an average Tuesday for us. So
- 1:25Speaker 2: Sunday hit and we go to church and everything was fine.
- 1:28Speaker 2: We actually had a decent sized crowd considering the snow.
- 1:32Speaker 2: But afterward we tried to go out to lunch with
- 1:34Speaker 2: a few people. There was not a single restaurant open,
- 1:38Speaker 2: and I'm like, how the roads aren't that bad. There's
- 1:42Speaker 2: no blizzard, you can see clearly, like where you're going,
- 1:45Speaker 2: and yet everything is shut down. In fact, we got
- 1:47Speaker 2: a worse snowstorm just a couple weeks ago and nothing
- 1:50Speaker 2: was shut down then.
- 1:51Speaker 1: So I don't I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:55Speaker 2: But speaking of drama, let's go ahead and read Second
- 1:57Speaker 2: Chronicles twenty two, the entire chapter. And as I usually don't,
- 2:01Speaker 2: I'm going to be reading from a different version of
- 2:03Speaker 2: scripture today. I usually read from the web, but today
- 2:05Speaker 2: we'll be reading from the es V version. But before
- 2:08Speaker 2: I begin today's episode, please listen to this word from
- 2:11Speaker 2: a sponsor. All right, after that word from the sponsor,
- 2:15Speaker 2: let's go ahead and read Second Chronicles twenty two the
- 2:18Speaker 2: entire thing again. I'll be reading this from the es
- 2:21Speaker 2: V this morning. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made a Hazia,
- 2:26Speaker 2: his youngest son, king in his place, for the band
- 2:29Speaker 2: of men that came with the Arabians to the camp
- 2:31Speaker 2: had killed all the older sons. So Ajazia the king
- 2:34Speaker 2: of Jehoram, King of Judah, reigned. Ajazio was twenty two
- 2:38Speaker 2: years old when he began to reign, and he reigned
- 2:40Speaker 2: one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athalia, the
- 2:44Speaker 2: granddaughter of Omri. He also walked in the ways of
- 2:47Speaker 2: the house of Ahab, for his mother was his counselor
- 2:50Speaker 2: in doing wickedly. He did what was evil in the
- 2:52Speaker 2: sight of the Lord, as the house of a Hab
- 2:54Speaker 2: had done, for after the death of his father, they
- 2:57Speaker 2: were his counselors to his undoing. He even followed their
- 3:01Speaker 2: council and went with Jehoorah, the son of Ahab, king
- 3:03Speaker 2: of Israel, to make war against Hazil, the king of Syria,
- 3:06Speaker 2: at Ramoth Gilead, and the Syrians wounded Joram, and he
- 3:10Speaker 2: returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that
- 3:13Speaker 2: he had received at Ramah when he fought against Hazel,
- 3:15Speaker 2: the king of Syria, and Ajazi, the son of Jehoah,
- 3:18Speaker 2: king of Judah, went down to see Joram, the son
- 3:20Speaker 2: of Ahab and Jezreel, because he was wounded. But it
- 3:23Speaker 2: was ordained by God that the downfall of Ajazia should
- 3:25Speaker 2: come about through his going to visit Joram. For when
- 3:28Speaker 2: he came there, he went out with Jehoam to meet Jehu,
- 3:31Speaker 2: the son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had anointed to
- 3:34Speaker 2: destroy the house of Ahab. And when Jehu was executing
- 3:37Speaker 2: judgment on the house of Ahab, he met the princes
- 3:39Speaker 2: of Judah and the sons of Ajazia's brothers who attended Ajazia,
- 3:43Speaker 2: and he killed them. He searched for Ajazia, and he
- 3:46Speaker 2: was captured while hiding in Samaria, and he was brought
- 3:49Speaker 2: to Jehu and put to death. They buried him for
- 3:52Speaker 2: they said he is the grandson of jehash Fat, who
- 3:54Speaker 2: sought the Lord with all his heart. And the house
- 3:57Speaker 2: of Ajazia had no one able to rule the kingdom. Now,
- 4:00Speaker 2: when Athaliah, the mother of a Hazia, saw that her
- 4:02Speaker 2: son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal
- 4:05Speaker 2: family of the House of Judah. But Jehashabath, the daughter
- 4:08Speaker 2: of the king, took joe Ash, the son of Ajazia,
- 4:11Speaker 2: and stole him away from among the king's sons who
- 4:13Speaker 2: were about to be put to death, and she put
- 4:16Speaker 2: him and his nurse in a bedroom. Thus, Jehashabath, the
- 4:19Speaker 2: daughter of the King of Jehorah and wife of Jehoitah
- 4:21Speaker 2: the priest, because she was sister of Ajazia, hid him
- 4:24Speaker 2: from Athalia so that she did not put him to death,
- 4:28Speaker 2: and he remained with them six years hidden in the
- 4:30Speaker 2: House of God while Athalia reigned over the land. This
- 4:35Speaker 2: is where things get really confusing in the Old Testament,
- 4:38Speaker 2: because everybody has the same name or names that sound
- 4:41Speaker 2: very close to each other, and so it's like, who
- 4:44Speaker 2: is Scripture talking about right now? So we'll go over it.
- 4:47Speaker 2: It says in verse one that the inhabitants of Jerusalem
- 4:50Speaker 2: made Ajazia his youngest son king in his place, So
- 4:54Speaker 2: who are they talking about here? Well, in the previous chapter,
- 4:57Speaker 2: in Second Chronicles twenty one, it was talking all all
- 5:00Speaker 2: about Jehoah, the son of Jehoshaphat, And we talked about,
- 5:03Speaker 2: you know, Jehoshaphat's reign for quite a while, and he
- 5:05Speaker 2: was a great king, and you guys probably remember talking
- 5:07Speaker 2: about him. But Jehorah, you know, we only covered him
- 5:10Speaker 2: for one day on the podcast because his reign was
- 5:13Speaker 2: so fast. He only reigned eight years, and there's really
- 5:17Speaker 2: nothing notable that he did other than cause a whole
- 5:20Speaker 2: bunch of destruction in Jerusalem and Judah. So he did
- 5:24Speaker 2: the opposite of good things. He did a lot of
- 5:25Speaker 2: very bad things, and Edam revolted, even Libnah revolted during
- 5:30Speaker 2: his time in Libna. I just found out today actually
- 5:34Speaker 2: was a priestly city in Jerusalem itself. And because of
- 5:38Speaker 2: all of the terrible things that Jehorah did while he
- 5:41Speaker 2: was king for eight years, Libnah revolted as a priest city.
- 5:45Speaker 2: They said, no, we're not going along with this, and
- 5:47Speaker 2: that was a big problem in Jehoram's day as well. Now,
- 5:50Speaker 2: God ended up judging Jehorah pretty greatly because of all
- 5:54Speaker 2: of the idolatry he brought into Jerusalem and Judah as
- 5:58Speaker 2: a whole. And all this idolatry that he brought in
- 6:00Speaker 2: was actually stuff that jehash Fat before him and Asa
- 6:04Speaker 2: the king before jehash Fat were trying to get rid
- 6:06Speaker 2: of during their reigns, they were removing all the cult
- 6:09Speaker 2: behavior in Judah and Jerusalem. But then Jehorah comes in
- 6:13Speaker 2: and during his eight years undid everything his father and
- 6:17Speaker 2: grandfather before him had accomplished, and he brings in all
- 6:22Speaker 2: of this idolatry into Jerusalem and Judah. So God judges Jehorah,
- 6:27Speaker 2: and what ends up happening is these Arabians and Philistines
- 6:30Speaker 2: banned together to destroy the House of Jehorah, and they
- 6:36Speaker 2: were pretty successful for the most part. They killed most
- 6:39Speaker 2: of Johorah's sons except for the youngest son named Ahazia
- 6:43Speaker 2: or in some versions of scripture, jehoah Has. But Jehorah
- 6:47Speaker 2: did not die in that battle. His sons died, but
- 6:50Speaker 2: he did not die. He actually died of a really
- 6:52Speaker 2: bad disease. No one's sure exactly what he died of,
- 6:56Speaker 2: but most people guess it's a prolapse of some sort
- 6:59Speaker 2: or cancer.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Those are the two guesses.
- 7:02Speaker 2: But he died in a lot of pain, and when
- 7:05Speaker 2: he died, no one was sad. It's what scripture says,
- 7:08Speaker 2: that is how hated Jehoram was. He didn't even get
- 7:12Speaker 2: a proper burial that the king's got. In fact, if
- 7:15Speaker 2: you read the writings of Josephus, it actually says that
- 7:18Speaker 2: they desecrated his body as well, though scripture does not
- 7:22Speaker 2: mention that. But I found that kind of interesting. But
- 7:24Speaker 2: in Second Chronicles twenty two, starting in verse one, here's
- 7:27Speaker 2: what it says. The inhabitants of Jerusalem made a Hazia,
- 7:30Speaker 2: his youngest son, king in Jehoram's place, for the band
- 7:34Speaker 2: of men that came with the Arabians to the camp
- 7:37Speaker 2: had killed all the older sons. So Ajazia, the son
- 7:40Speaker 2: of Jehoram, king of Judah, reigned. A Jazio was twenty
- 7:43Speaker 2: two years old when he began to reign, and he
- 7:45Speaker 2: reigned one year in Jerusalem. So that show's right there
- 7:49Speaker 2: that there was only one reason why a Jazia became
- 7:51Speaker 2: the king, because he was the only heir left to
- 7:54Speaker 2: the throne, like literally everybody else had died. So this
- 7:58Speaker 2: doesn't necessarily mean that Jerusalem and Judah wanted Ajazia as king,
- 8:04Speaker 2: but he was truly the only person left, so they
- 8:07Speaker 2: made him the king. He was very young when he
- 8:09Speaker 2: became the king. It says he was twenty two years old. Now,
- 8:13Speaker 2: depending on whatever version you have, it may actually say
- 8:16Speaker 2: forty two years old, and that's a little bit contested
- 8:19Speaker 2: as to whether he was twenty two or forty two.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But most scholars believe that he was twenty two years
- 8:25Speaker 2: old because if you go back to the Septuagint, that
- 8:28Speaker 2: is what it says in the situagent, and also if
- 8:30Speaker 2: you read Second King's chapter eight, it also mentions that
- 8:35Speaker 2: he was twenty two years old when he became the king.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Second Kings eight twenty six says Ajazio was twenty two
- 8:41Speaker 2: years old when he began to reign and he reigned
- 8:43Speaker 2: one year in Jerusalem. So most likely, based upon that
- 8:47Speaker 2: and based upon the Subtuagent, Ajazia was in fact twenty
- 8:50Speaker 2: two years old when he became the king, and it
- 8:53Speaker 2: says that he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's
- 8:57Speaker 2: name was Athalia, the Grand of Omri. Now we've talked
- 9:02Speaker 2: about Athalia before because she was a really, really bad person.
- 9:05Speaker 2: She was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. She was
- 9:10Speaker 2: a bad person. You know. Jezebel was absolutely awful. We
- 9:14Speaker 2: talked about her in First and Second Kings, and she
- 9:16Speaker 2: caused all sorts of problems up in Israel. She was
- 9:20Speaker 2: bringing in bail worship. She was killing people left and
- 9:24Speaker 2: right for just no reason whatsoever. She ended up plotting
- 9:27Speaker 2: to kill a man and all of his children for
- 9:30Speaker 2: a piece of land because she wanted the land that
- 9:33Speaker 2: the man owned.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And on top of that, she was.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Just killing priests like priests of Yahweh left and right
- 9:38Speaker 2: because she hated Yahwism and didn't want it in Israel,
- 9:42Speaker 2: even though it was the religion of the Israelites. She
- 9:46Speaker 2: only wanted bail worship to come in. So she was
- 9:49Speaker 2: killing all of God's priests and wanted nothing to do
- 9:52Speaker 2: with them. And so Athalia is their daughter, and she
- 9:56Speaker 2: married Jehoram, Jehashafat's son because of the union Jehashafat had
- 10:02Speaker 2: with King Ahab, and God did not bless that union
- 10:06Speaker 2: between Ahab and Jehoshaphat. In fact, he was angry at
- 10:09Speaker 2: Jehashafat for making that peace treaty in the first place.
- 10:14Speaker 2: He said to jehash Fat, why would you love people
- 10:16Speaker 2: that hate me and hate my commandments? It was just
- 10:19Speaker 2: bad news. Because here's what it says right here in
- 10:21Speaker 2: verse two, Ahazia's mother's name was Athaliah, the granddaughter of Omri.
- 10:28Speaker 2: He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab,
- 10:31Speaker 2: for his mother was his counselor in doing wickedly. So Athaliah,
- 10:36Speaker 2: this terrible daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, counseled her son
- 10:41Speaker 2: to do wickedly, is what it said. And unfortunately he listened.
- 10:45Speaker 2: He did evil in the sight of the Lord, as
- 10:48Speaker 2: the house of Ahab had done, for after the death
- 10:51Speaker 2: of his father, they were his counselors to his undoing. Ahazia,
- 10:57Speaker 2: who is the new king, is listening to the wrong crowd.
- 11:01Speaker 2: He is listening to his mother's family and his mother
- 11:04Speaker 2: who are training him and advising him to do very wickedly.
- 11:08Speaker 2: So this shows a few things actually for us nowadays.
- 11:11Speaker 2: The first thing is that we shouldn't take bad counsel.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Here's what it says in Psalm chapter one one through two.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Blessed is the man who walks not in the council
- 11:22Speaker 2: of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners,
- 11:26Speaker 2: nor sits in the seat of scoffers. But his delight
- 11:29Speaker 2: is in the law of the Lord. And on his
- 11:31Speaker 2: law he meditates day and night, and then there's a
- 11:34Speaker 2: proverb also that talks about bad counsel as well. Proverbs
- 11:37Speaker 2: thirteen twenty says whoever walks with the wise becomes wise,
- 11:42Speaker 2: but the companion of fools will suffer harm. And another proverb,
- 11:47Speaker 2: which is Proverbs twelve, verse five says the thoughts of
- 11:50Speaker 2: the righteous are just, but the counsels of the wicked
- 11:53Speaker 2: are deceitful. All those verses are talking about receiving wise counsel.
- 11:59Speaker 2: And here's the thing, Ahazia had these verses. Solomon, who
- 12:03Speaker 2: wrote pretty much the entirety of the Book of Proverbs,
- 12:06Speaker 2: had already written all of this stuff down. Proverbs is
- 12:10Speaker 2: filled to the brim with wisdom. Ahazia could have taken
- 12:14Speaker 2: knowledge from these scriptures, from the past kings, from David,
- 12:19Speaker 2: and from Solomon, who wrote these things down about bad council.
- 12:23Speaker 2: But unfortunately a Hazia did not do that. He took
- 12:26Speaker 2: the advice of his mother Athalia and also the house
- 12:30Speaker 2: of Ahab, and scripture says specifically that it was to
- 12:33Speaker 2: his undoing. Then Second Chronicles twenty two to five says
- 12:37Speaker 2: he even followed their council and went with Jehoram, the
- 12:40Speaker 2: son of Ahab, king of Israel to make war against
- 12:43Speaker 2: Haziel the King of Syria. Ramoth Gilead and the Syrians
- 12:46Speaker 2: wounded Joram and he returned to be healed in Jezreel
- 12:49Speaker 2: of the wounds that he received at Rama when he
- 12:51Speaker 2: fought against Hazil the King of Syria. So that is
- 12:55Speaker 2: how far the bad Council went that Hazia is getting
- 12:59Speaker 2: into wars that are none of his business in order
- 13:03Speaker 2: to help his family out. Because Ahazia also had an
- 13:07Speaker 2: uncle named Jehoram, and that's where things get really confusing.
- 13:11Speaker 2: And the uncle named Jehorah was the son of Ahab,
- 13:15Speaker 2: and most likely Ahazia's father named Jehoram was named after
- 13:19Speaker 2: the uncle Jehorah because of the alliance that jehash Fat
- 13:23Speaker 2: and Ahab had with each other. But yeah, if you
- 13:25Speaker 2: can keep everything straight, Ahazia went with his uncle Jehoram,
- 13:30Speaker 2: who was Ahab's son and the king of Israel at
- 13:33Speaker 2: this time and a very wicked king by the way,
- 13:35Speaker 2: we've talked about his life before too. He went with
- 13:38Speaker 2: him into this battle, and this was not any place
- 13:41Speaker 2: that Ajazia needed to be. He didn't need to be
- 13:44Speaker 2: going into battle. First and foremost and causing the people
- 13:47Speaker 2: of Judah to have their lives be endangered over a
- 13:50Speaker 2: battle that did not matter at the time, only to
- 13:53Speaker 2: help his uncle. It was not fair to the people
- 13:55Speaker 2: of Judah at all, who had follow their king into
- 13:58Speaker 2: this battle. There was nothing could do about it. But yet,
- 14:01Speaker 2: because Ajazia was listening to the worst council ever, he
- 14:04Speaker 2: didn't care about the life of his people. He only
- 14:08Speaker 2: cared about his family. And you can see right here
- 14:12Speaker 2: that the family of King Ahab was very arrogant and
- 14:18Speaker 2: very self centered. And we'll talk about that in just
- 14:20Speaker 2: a second here. So it says right here that Ahazia,
- 14:23Speaker 2: the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to
- 14:26Speaker 2: see Joram, the son of Jezreel, because he was wounded.
- 14:29Speaker 2: So jehorahm also named Joram, which is another way it
- 14:32Speaker 2: gets confusing. The uncle of Ajazia ended up getting wounded
- 14:37Speaker 2: in that battle, and so Ajazia goes to visit his
- 14:41Speaker 2: uncle who was healing up in Jezreel. But what's interesting
- 14:46Speaker 2: is in verse seven, it says right here that it
- 14:49Speaker 2: was ordained by God that the downfall of Ajazia should
- 14:52Speaker 2: come about through his going to visit Jehorah, for when
- 14:56Speaker 2: he came there, he went out with Jehorah to meet
- 14:58Speaker 2: jahu the son of me She, whom the Lord had
- 15:01Speaker 2: anointed to destroy the house of Ahab. That's talked about
- 15:05Speaker 2: in Second Kings chapter eight and nine, so let's read
- 15:11Speaker 2: Second Kings eight, twenty eight and twenty nine to start.
- 15:14Speaker 2: It says Ajazia went with Joram, the son of Ahab
- 15:17Speaker 2: to war against Haziel the King of Syria Ramath Gilead,
- 15:20Speaker 2: and the Syrians wounded Joram King.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel from.
- 15:25Speaker 2: The wounds which the Syrians had given him a rama
- 15:28Speaker 2: when he fought against Haziel the King of Syria. Ajazia,
- 15:31Speaker 2: the son of Jehorah, King of Judah, went down to
- 15:34Speaker 2: see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he
- 15:37Speaker 2: was sick. And then if we move into the next chapter,
- 15:40Speaker 2: it talks about how during that time of Jehoram being sick,
- 15:44Speaker 2: God actually anointed another man of Israel to take Jehoram's
- 15:51Speaker 2: place and completely destroy the entire line of Ahab because
- 15:55Speaker 2: of all the terrible things they had done. And that's
- 15:58Speaker 2: talked about at the beginning of Second King's chapter nine,
- 16:01Speaker 2: and that guy's name was jay Who, And we talked
- 16:04Speaker 2: about jay Who's life a while back when we discussed
- 16:07Speaker 2: Second King's chapter nine and jay Who he went a
- 16:10Speaker 2: little too far, not a little bit, he went very
- 16:13Speaker 2: too far. He killed people that he should not have killed.
- 16:19Speaker 2: So he was not a great man either, But he
- 16:24Speaker 2: did enact God's judgments on Ahab's line, and that included
- 16:28Speaker 2: actually a Hazia as well, who was the grandson of
- 16:33Speaker 2: King Ahab through his mother. So in Second Kings nine,
- 16:37Speaker 2: verse twenty one, it says that Jehoram was finally feeling
- 16:41Speaker 2: better after being wounded, and he hears about Jayhu, so
- 16:44Speaker 2: he goes out to meet him. And so here's what
- 16:47Speaker 2: it says, starting in verse twenty one. Jehorah said, get ready,
- 16:51Speaker 2: so they got his chariot ready. Then Joram, the King
- 16:54Speaker 2: of Israel, and a Hazia, the King of Judah, went
- 16:57Speaker 2: out each in his chariot because don't forget, was there
- 17:00Speaker 2: visiting his uncle Jehoram. And they went out to meet
- 17:04Speaker 2: Jehu and found him on Nabeth, the Jezreelites land. When
- 17:09Speaker 2: Joram saw Jehu, he said, is it peace?
- 17:12Speaker 1: Jehu?
- 17:13Speaker 2: He answered, what peace? As long as the prostitution of
- 17:16Speaker 2: your mother Jezebel and her witchcraft abound. Joram turned his
- 17:20Speaker 2: hands and fled, and he said to Ajazia, this is treason.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Ajazia.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Jehu drew his bow with full strength and struck Joram
- 17:28Speaker 2: between his arms, and the arrow went out at his heart,
- 17:31Speaker 2: and he sunk down in his chariot. Then Jaehu said
- 17:34Speaker 2: to Bidcar his captain, pick him up and throw him
- 17:37Speaker 2: in the plot of the field of Nabeth, the Jezreelite.
- 17:39Speaker 2: For remember when you and I rode together after Ahab,
- 17:42Speaker 2: his father Yahweh laid this burden on him. Surely I
- 17:46Speaker 2: have seen yesterday the blood of Nabeth and the blood
- 17:48Speaker 2: of his sons, says Yahweh. And I will repay you
- 17:51Speaker 2: in this plot of ground, says Yahweh. Now, therefore take
- 17:55Speaker 2: and cast him onto the plot of ground according to
- 17:58Speaker 2: Yahweh's word. But the King of Judah saw this. He
- 18:02Speaker 2: fled by the way of the garden house. Jehu followed
- 18:04Speaker 2: after him and said it strike him also in the chariot.
- 18:08Speaker 2: They struck him at the ascent of Ger, which is
- 18:10Speaker 2: by a bleam. He fled it to Megido and died there.
- 18:14Speaker 2: His servants carried him in chariots to Jerusalem and buried
- 18:18Speaker 2: him in his tomb and with his fathers in David's city.
- 18:21Speaker 2: In the eleventh year, Joram, the son of Ahab Ajazia,
- 18:24Speaker 2: began to reign over Judah. So in a Nutshell that
- 18:27Speaker 2: tells the story of what happened to Ahazia, and Second
- 18:31Speaker 2: Chronicles twenty two repeats that story. In verses seven through nine.
- 18:36Speaker 2: It says, when Jehu was executing judgment on the house
- 18:38Speaker 2: of Ahab, he met the princes of Judah and the
- 18:40Speaker 2: sons of Ajazia's brothers, who attended a Hazia and killed them.
- 18:45Speaker 2: He searched for Hazia, and he was captured while hiding
- 18:48Speaker 2: in Samaria, and he was brought to Jehu and put
- 18:51Speaker 2: to death. They buried him for they said he is
- 18:53Speaker 2: the grandson of jehash Fat, who sought the Lord with
- 18:56Speaker 2: all his heart, and the house of Hazia had no
- 18:59Speaker 2: one able to rule the kingdom. So I find it
- 19:02Speaker 2: kind of interesting that the only reason the people of
- 19:05Speaker 2: Judah buried Ahazia was because of Jehashafat. That's what it
- 19:09Speaker 2: says right here. They buried Ahazia for they said he
- 19:13Speaker 2: is the grandson of Jehashafat, who sought the Lord with
- 19:16Speaker 2: all his heart. So again, Ahazia, nobody was really all
- 19:21Speaker 2: that sad that he died, And the only reason he
- 19:24Speaker 2: was buried with the other kings was because of how
- 19:28Speaker 2: good of a king his grandfather, Jehashapat had been. That's
- 19:32Speaker 2: the only reason the people gave Ajazia any honor during
- 19:35Speaker 2: his death. But it mentions right here that the house
- 19:38Speaker 2: of Ajazia or the line of King David had no
- 19:41Speaker 2: one able to rule the kingdom because of what happens
- 19:45Speaker 2: right after this in verse ten. Now, when Athaliah, the
- 19:49Speaker 2: mother of Ajazia, saw that her son was dead, she
- 19:53Speaker 2: arose and destroyed all the royal family of the House
- 19:56Speaker 2: of Judah. So she went and finished what her husband
- 20:01Speaker 2: had started. Her husband, Jehorah, had killed all of his brothers.
- 20:05Speaker 2: She went and killed everybody else after her son had died.
- 20:11Speaker 2: And here's why, because she wanted to destroy the royal
- 20:14Speaker 2: family of the House of Judah, or rather the House
- 20:17Speaker 2: of David. She wanted them all gone because she hated
- 20:20Speaker 2: them because she was very self focused on her own
- 20:25Speaker 2: family and Ahab's royal line. So this means she found
- 20:28Speaker 2: anybody who could have been the next in line for
- 20:32Speaker 2: the throne and she killed them, including her own grand children.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Verse eleven, Jehasha Bath, the daughter of the king, took
- 20:41Speaker 2: joe Ash, the son of a Jazia, and stole him
- 20:44Speaker 2: away from among the king's sons who were about to
- 20:47Speaker 2: be put to death, and she put him and his
- 20:49Speaker 2: nurse in a bedroom. So it gets confusing once again.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Jehasha Bath was the daughter of King Jehorah, but not
- 20:58Speaker 2: the daughter of a thought because you know, the kings
- 21:01Speaker 2: had five hundred wives back in these days, and so
- 21:04Speaker 2: she would have been the daughter of one of the
- 21:07Speaker 2: other wives of Jehoram. So she was the stepsister of
- 21:11Speaker 2: King Ahazia, who had just recently died. And it turns
- 21:14Speaker 2: out that Jehasha Bath was also married to Jehoida, the
- 21:18Speaker 2: high priest, so she was presumably a god fearing woman.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Also because she was married to the high priest, it
- 21:27Speaker 2: says in verse eleven that she was the sister of
- 21:29Speaker 2: Ajazia and hid him or baby joe Ash from Athalia,
- 21:33Speaker 2: so that she did not put him to death, and
- 21:36Speaker 2: he remained with them six years hidden in the House
- 21:39Speaker 2: of God while Athalia reigned over the land. We don't
- 21:43Speaker 2: know how many sons Ajazia had had. It could have
- 21:46Speaker 2: been that he had a lot, actually, because even though
- 21:49Speaker 2: he was only twenty two twenty three years old when
- 21:51Speaker 2: he had died, that does not mean that he didn't
- 21:54Speaker 2: get an early start, you know, as the king. Things
- 21:58Speaker 2: were very different back in those days, and there is
- 22:00Speaker 2: a lot of women at the king's demand, So it
- 22:05Speaker 2: could be that he had many, many children. Actually, we
- 22:08Speaker 2: don't know how many he had, but whatever it was,
- 22:10Speaker 2: Athalia made it her mission to kill every single one
- 22:14Speaker 2: of these children.
- 22:15Speaker 1: But somehow baby joe.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Ash slipped through the cracks, and Athalia did not know
- 22:20Speaker 2: that this baby didn't die, and that is because Jehasha
- 22:22Speaker 2: Bath protected her nephew when he was about to die.
- 22:26Speaker 2: So reading through this chapter you can definitely learn a
- 22:29Speaker 2: few things. The first thing is that it's bad to
- 22:32Speaker 2: take bad counsel, and that might sound obvious, but think
- 22:37Speaker 2: about who King Ahazi was taking bad counsel from. He
- 22:40Speaker 2: was taking this council from his family and a lot
- 22:44Speaker 2: of people nowadays, probably think that it's good to take
- 22:47Speaker 2: advice from your family members. It's good to take advice
- 22:50Speaker 2: from your mom because mom is always right. And maybe
- 22:53Speaker 2: a Hazia had that same kind of idea that, oh,
- 22:56Speaker 2: my mom couldn't possibly be wrong. You know, she's the
- 22:59Speaker 2: daughter of a king, a very famous king. She's wise
- 23:03Speaker 2: in her own ways, you know, and so I'm gonna
- 23:05Speaker 2: take her advice. No, you do not take bad advice.
- 23:08Speaker 2: It doesn't matter who it comes from. It doesn't matter
- 23:11Speaker 2: if it's your mom, who you love more than anybody
- 23:14Speaker 2: else on this planet. You don't take her bad advice,
- 23:18Speaker 2: especially if it goes against what the Bible says. You
- 23:21Speaker 2: cannot take that advice. You have to follow God before
- 23:25Speaker 2: you follow anybody else. Yes, you still honor your parents,
- 23:29Speaker 2: but you don't sin while you're honoring your parents. So
- 23:32Speaker 2: that's the first thing we can learn. Bad counsel is bad,
- 23:35Speaker 2: it doesn't matter who it comes from. And the second
- 23:39Speaker 2: thing we learn is that when evil seems to rise,
- 23:44Speaker 2: you know, in the form of a Folia right here,
- 23:46Speaker 2: who is killing all of her grandchildren, God always raises
- 23:51Speaker 2: up somebody to protect us. And in this case, it
- 23:55Speaker 2: was a wise woman who rose up to protect the
- 23:59Speaker 2: people of Judah by protecting her nephew, who would become
- 24:03Speaker 2: the next king. And in this case, it actually says
- 24:05Speaker 2: at the very end that Athalia reigned over the land
- 24:09Speaker 2: for six years. Six long years Judah had to deal
- 24:15Speaker 2: with this terrible baile worshiping Phoenician woman who was only
- 24:21Speaker 2: queen because of her family relations, not because she was
- 24:26Speaker 2: Jewish or a Yahweh worshiper, but because she married into
- 24:31Speaker 2: the line of David. But even though things looked really
- 24:35Speaker 2: dark and really grim for those six years in Judah's history,
- 24:40Speaker 2: God was working behind the scenes, very quietly. By the way,
- 24:44Speaker 2: it didn't look like anything good was happening, but indeed
- 24:47Speaker 2: something good was in fact happening. A wise woman and
- 24:51Speaker 2: her husband, the priest, was raising a little boy who
- 24:55Speaker 2: was going to become the next king and save Judah
- 24:59Speaker 2: from this terrible woman who caused so many problems. Faithful listenators,
- 25:05Speaker 2: thank you so much for listening to today's episode. I
- 25:08Speaker 2: have some closing remarks I'd like to make, but before
- 25:10Speaker 2: I do, here is a word from a sponsor. I
- 25:15Speaker 2: really love that Old Testament scripture is relatable to today,
- 25:19Speaker 2: even though it doesn't seem like it initially, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 2: when you're reading about all of these kings that seem
- 25:24Speaker 2: to live so long ago, and they have such crazy
- 25:26Speaker 2: names that you can't pronounce, yet their stories are so relatable,
- 25:32Speaker 2: and it's especially nice to read these stories of how
- 25:35Speaker 2: God is working behind the scenes. You know, God does
- 25:38Speaker 2: not often work the way we think he's going to.
- 25:41Speaker 2: It kind of reminds me of that story that we
- 25:43Speaker 2: read about in First Kings where Elijah was so distressed
- 25:47Speaker 2: over what was happening in Israel under the rule of
- 25:50Speaker 2: Ahab and Jezebel that he ran away, and he ran
- 25:53Speaker 2: away to this mountain where he's wondering where God is.
- 25:57Speaker 2: And he's up on that mountain and all of these
- 25:59Speaker 2: natural disasters start happening, like this whirlwind and this, like
- 26:05Speaker 2: fire and stuff, and yet God was not in those things.
- 26:10Speaker 2: But then right after all of those natural disasters happen,
- 26:14Speaker 2: Elijah hears a still small voice, and that was God.
- 26:21Speaker 2: He was not in those natural disasters. And that's what
- 26:24Speaker 2: we think God is going to do for us. We
- 26:26Speaker 2: think he's going to act big and do you know,
- 26:30Speaker 2: amazing miracles in the sight of everybody, But no, a
- 26:33Speaker 2: lot of times he is quiet, and He works behind
- 26:36Speaker 2: the scenes, things that we don't know what is happening,
- 26:39Speaker 2: things we can't see, just like the story we read
- 26:42Speaker 2: today where that little baby was saved from being killed
- 26:46Speaker 2: by his own grandmother, and that baby was being raised
- 26:50Speaker 2: very quietly, very secretively. Nobody knew about it because if
- 26:56Speaker 2: anybody found out, Atholia would go and kill the baby.
- 26:59Speaker 2: So it had to be quiet, it had to be
- 27:01Speaker 2: behind the scenes. And Israel, i'm sure, had no clue
- 27:05Speaker 2: that God was raising up a king for them in
- 27:08Speaker 2: the middle of all of these trials that they're going
- 27:11Speaker 2: through under Queen a Folia, if you can even call
- 27:14Speaker 2: her a queen. So that is what you can take
- 27:17Speaker 2: comfort in today in this story, is that God is
- 27:21Speaker 2: always working and we don't always need to know what
- 27:24Speaker 2: is going on. We just have to trust that God's
- 27:26Speaker 2: got it. Faithful listeners, have a fantastic and wonderful rest
- 27:31Speaker 2: of your day, happy listening, and God bless. I just
