- 0:18Speaker 1: a hater. It is Time Machine Tuesday, and we are
- 0:22Speaker 1: going to talk about the superhuman 2001 baseball season, specifically
- 0:28Speaker 1: Barry Bonds hitting 73 home runs. Coming to us live
- 0:31Speaker 1: from 312 Sports. Check him out with Jason Goff, unscripted.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Jason Goff, what's going on?
- 0:37Speaker 2: What's happening, bro? How you doing, brother?
- 0:38Speaker 1: Hey, man. All-time favorite topic to talk about for me
- 0:42Speaker 1: is Barry Bonds. Like, I feel like Barry Bonds, and
- 0:46Speaker 1: maybe it's just, I don't know, maybe part of it
- 0:48Speaker 1: is just the way baseball works or whatever, but Bonds
- 0:52Speaker 1: is kind of rocketed to, like, the top of the
- 0:54Speaker 1: had-to-be-there list. Like, Otani has emerged and created an argument
- 0:59Speaker 1: that he may be the best baseball player since World
- 1:01Speaker 1: War II. I can definitely say the best baseball player
- 1:04Speaker 1: between World War II and Shohei Otani without question is
- 1:06Speaker 1: Barry Bonds.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Man, listen, all you got to do for the people
- 1:11Speaker 3: who just need a number, all you got to do
- 1:13Speaker 3: is look up wins above replacement and you will see
- 1:16Speaker 3: names that.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Predate like wars ahead of them.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Babe Ruth, Rogers Hornsby, like the single, I think the
- 1:26Speaker 3: single most. damaging and dominant season that we have seen
- 1:30Speaker 3: in the modern baseball era now shrouded in everything that
- 1:33Speaker 3: is shrouded.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And I'm sure you, we.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Going to get to it, but there was, there was
- 1:37Speaker 3: nothing like headed to, and this was like peak sports center,
- 1:41Speaker 3: you know, baseball tonight, jump on the highlights, see what
- 1:45Speaker 3: you missed every single night or seemingly every other night he.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Was going along. And on top of it, he was
- 1:51Speaker 2: doing it in a pitcher friendly park.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Like he, There's not much that you could put up
- 1:56Speaker 3: against that season to make it feel any less for me,
- 1:59Speaker 3: even though while I was living through it, I was
- 2:03Speaker 3: always questioning what was being said, how it was being said,
- 2:06Speaker 3: and what the truth was around him.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But come on, man, 73 home runs.
- 2:09Speaker 3: 50 home run seasons, I think there have been like 11,
- 2:15Speaker 3: 12 of them by a person who's done it multiple times.
- 2:20Speaker 3: To do that and to do it multiple seasons? Come on, man.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Like 177 walks. The amount of at-bats you have to
- 2:29Speaker 3: have to even grace 50 is crazy. He had 490-something
- 2:34Speaker 3: at-bats and hit 73 home runs. 476. 476, dog.
- 2:39Speaker 1: 476. And the wild thing about Bonds is, though, Bonds
- 2:43Speaker 1: had a 49. But other than 73, he didn't have
- 2:46Speaker 1: a 50, right? He was up there with Hank Aaron
- 2:48Speaker 1: in that regard. Very similar to LeBron James in terms
- 2:52Speaker 1: of scoring. Where in the end, the numbers were where
- 2:55Speaker 1: they were. But Bonds really dialed this up by and
- 2:58Speaker 1: large through consistency. Now, we'll get to the 2000s.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But first.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I think an important walk up on Barry Bonds' career
- 3:06Speaker 1: is important. And I do not think that people properly
- 3:10Speaker 1: understand that before 1998, Bonds had an argument for being
- 3:16Speaker 1: the best player that we had ever seen by that
- 3:19Speaker 1: point already. When Bonds got to 400 home runs and
- 3:20Speaker 1: 400 stolen bases. He was the first person to have
- 3:25Speaker 1: ever done that, right? And that is before the 1999 season,
- 3:30Speaker 1: which is when we started getting into Allegation World. But
- 3:32Speaker 1: prior to that, he had done that. Three MVPs, two
- 3:36Speaker 1: with the Pirates. One that he probably also should have
- 3:40Speaker 1: won in 91 over Terry Pendleton. He should have won
- 3:43Speaker 1: the 2000 MVP over Jeff Kent. In those years in between,
- 3:48Speaker 1: he's got years where he leads the league in war,
- 3:50Speaker 1: but there were obvious arguments for the other guys that
- 3:53Speaker 1: wound up winning in those years. But he was the
- 3:56Speaker 1: best defensive left fielder of his time. He struck out
- 4:00Speaker 1: 100 times his rookie year. Never again did he strike
- 4:05Speaker 1: out 100 times, right? By the time you get into, like,
- 4:09Speaker 1: he's no longer the leadoff man, you start getting into
- 4:11Speaker 1: the 90s, the dude's putting up 100-something walks, 70 strikeouts,
- 4:14Speaker 1: maybe 80 strikeouts. There's nothing you can do, and it's
- 4:17Speaker 1: line drives. There's a whole generation of kids that do
- 4:20Speaker 1: not appreciate and understand the value of line drives. He
- 4:24Speaker 1: was just choking up on the bat and hitting line drives.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Patrick Bailey is a dude right now who plays for
- 4:32Speaker 3: the Milwaukee Brewers and they call him Patty Barrels because
- 4:35Speaker 3: he barrels everything up. Imagine watching that dude. And like
- 4:38Speaker 3: you mentioned, choking up. You can see the knob handle
- 4:41Speaker 3: of the bat. Like some guys, you can't even see it.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Some guys put their their bottom hand underneath it. This
- 4:46Speaker 3: dude was doing this with half the bat leaking out
- 4:49Speaker 3: of his grip.
- 4:52Speaker 2: 5'2 baseball players was something we learned about as kids. Like, oh,
- 4:55Speaker 2: you know, he's a 5'2 guy. He's a 5'2 guy.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Some guys had 3 1⁄2 tools. Those dudes went to
- 4:59Speaker 2: the Hall of Fame. Some dudes had 4 tools.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Like, oh, this is premier. This dude did everything. He
- 5:04Speaker 3: hit for average, hit for power. He ran the bases well.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Like you mentioned, terrific fielder, a terrific arm.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Oh, the arm is where it gets a little.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Hey, listen.
- 5:17Speaker 3: You talk to Andy Van Slyke about the things that
- 5:19Speaker 3: he did out there and how he how he didn't
- 5:21Speaker 3: have to play as shallow as everybody else. The Barry
- 5:26Speaker 3: Bonds phenomenon, the fact that it was lost in Pittsburgh
- 5:30Speaker 3: for all those years, I think means something as well.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You had that that three river was a riverfront stadium.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Three River Stadium.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I mean, it looked like a place that was a
- 5:42Speaker 3: cauldron for football, that baseball just happened to be played on.
- 5:46Speaker 3: He was a star in a very, very, shall we say,
- 5:52Speaker 3: unstarable market.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:56Speaker 1: That dude was batting leadoff all those years, and then
- 5:59Speaker 1: finally they put him at cleanup, and then he won
- 6:02Speaker 1: three of the next four MVPs. They put him at cleanup.
- 6:05Speaker 1: It was now everybody pay attention to Barry Bonds at
- 6:08Speaker 1: 26 years old. That's when the gold glove started. That's
- 6:10Speaker 1: when the MVP vote started. That's when he's leading the
- 6:13Speaker 1: league in OPS Plus, leading the league in OPS Jets. Like, oh, no,
- 6:17Speaker 1: he's the best player in the world. It's this guy
- 6:21Speaker 1: right here. He transitioned from the Jerry Curl to the
- 6:24Speaker 1: Jerry Box, right? Like a little Larry Blackman kind of
- 6:27Speaker 1: situation that he had going there. You know, he was
- 6:31Speaker 1: out there with the.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I think his other brother in the Bay, Jerry Rice,
- 6:34Speaker 3: tried to pull the Jerry box off, too, if I'm
- 6:36Speaker 3: not mistaken.
- 6:37Speaker 1: He did.
- 6:38Speaker 3: He did.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And Bonds was out here with the faith, the faith,
- 6:40Speaker 1: the faith. Give me earrings. You know what I'm saying?
- 6:44Speaker 3: So there are certain earrings I don't want no problems with.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Okay?
- 6:50Speaker 2: And this is from the old brother catalog.
- 6:52Speaker 3: That hoop, that one hoop, you know it, brother, meant business.
- 6:56Speaker 2: And any time I saw a dangly.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I think Saquon tried to bring it back. He had
- 6:59Speaker 1: the hoop with the cross because they had brought those
- 7:02Speaker 1: back a couple years ago. And I was like, wow,
- 7:04Speaker 1: we're doing that again, huh?
- 7:07Speaker 3: I remember when I saw LT's, I'm like, all right,
- 7:09Speaker 3: it must be okay.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Well, LT's is different. LT wore that dangly LT earring.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I don't think he ever stopped. I don't think he
- 7:17Speaker 1: ever stopped. My brother used the hoop up in North Jersey.
- 7:21Speaker 1: LT will pull up the hoop with the LT earring,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and he said the LT would shoot from anywhere on
- 7:26Speaker 1: the floor. LT gets the ball 40 feet away. He said, LT,
- 7:29Speaker 1: put it up. And when he put it up, you
- 7:31Speaker 1: know what he say? LT in the house?
- 7:34Speaker 2: Hey, listen.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Whenever you put up a shot. Not me.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Who going to say something?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Not me.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Who going to say move that, LT?
- 7:41Speaker 1: No.
- 7:42Speaker 2: You know why?
- 7:42Speaker 1: Because there was never no reason for LT to quit
- 7:45Speaker 1: doing dope because the only problem LT had with dope
- 7:48Speaker 1: was drug tests. Otherwise, that dope was not preventing LT
- 7:51Speaker 1: from doing any of his other daily tasks.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I appreciate a whole generation of players not being followers
- 7:59Speaker 3: in that I saw someone dominate.
- 8:01Speaker 2: The way that i saw laurence taylor dominate on on
- 8:04Speaker 2: cocaine all the things.
- 8:06Speaker 3: That they asking you to put in your body as
- 8:08Speaker 3: a football player and this recreational drug can do to.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Be fair there's a strong argument that that was a
- 8:14Speaker 1: performance enhancing.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Drug not to be fair.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I mean, in the hands of Lawrence Taylor? Right.
- 8:23Speaker 2: What? Hey, some of them games where he showed up right.
- 8:26Speaker 3: As the anthem was being sang, hey, his performance was
- 8:29Speaker 3: enhanced because he got on his giddy-up and got his ass.
- 8:31Speaker 1: In the stadium.
- 8:32Speaker 3: L.T.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Would have known.
- 8:33Speaker 2: L.T.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Quit and they'd be like, hey, man, we got to
- 8:35Speaker 1: talk about this, bro. You don't have to. Don't feel
- 8:39Speaker 1: like you got to do that for us.
- 8:40Speaker 2: It's a real conversation. Some of the things that put
- 8:43Speaker 2: you in that zone.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Shit, right now, Bears fans are asking Jalen Johnson to
- 8:46Speaker 3: watch porn again.
- 8:48Speaker 2: You know? Things go left when you veer from who
- 8:53Speaker 2: you truly are. It's your soul.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And with Barry Bonds, speaking of people who you truly were, the.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Thing with Bonds was one of the wildest things that
- 9:02Speaker 1: ever happened is Barry Bonds won two MVPs in three
- 9:05Speaker 1: years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and they didn't even offer
- 9:08Speaker 1: him a new deal. They would just roll out. They
- 9:13Speaker 1: disliked him that much. Now, did Barry give a lot
- 9:18Speaker 1: to dislike? Certainly. Did he give that much to dislike?
- 9:22Speaker 2: No.
- 9:25Speaker 3: This is the part where we get to the how
- 9:27Speaker 3: he was covered and who was talking about him and
- 9:30Speaker 3: who you could believe. Like, you ever hear somebody getting
- 9:33Speaker 3: talked about by people you don't trust and you're like,
- 9:37Speaker 3: is this true? Should I question it? For years, years
- 9:41Speaker 3: and years and years, I always wondered.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Was.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Barry as big an asshole as everybody else was making him?
- 9:49Speaker 3: Or did the man have control of the microphone and
- 9:53Speaker 3: make it seem that way?
- 9:54Speaker 2: And the answer probably is a little bit of this.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Glow comment. this.
- 10:00Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I began to ask people I trusted and they sounded
- 10:05Speaker 1: exactly like the white man. Every single one of them
- 10:09Speaker 1: sounded exactly like that white man that I said I
- 10:11Speaker 1: couldn't believe.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.
- 10:15Speaker 1: They was right there with the white man.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you had Bobby as your pops and
- 10:20Speaker 3: you had Dusty Baker as your godfather. Like, we all
- 10:24Speaker 3: know we're children of the experiences before us.
- 10:29Speaker 2: And with those two brothers.
- 10:31Speaker 3: I don't imagine you really had, you know, you didn't
- 10:36Speaker 3: suffer fools well coming out of that village.
- 10:38Speaker 1: You left one out, the most important one.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Oh, Willie. Willie Mays.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And so Jeff, Jeff Pearlman's book, love me, hate me
- 10:46Speaker 1: about Barry Bonds. It was a very interesting read. He
- 10:49Speaker 1: makes the point that Willie taught Barry that stars are
- 10:56Speaker 1: meant to be set apart. They, as the star, you
- 11:00Speaker 1: could not be one of the guys that there was a,
- 11:03Speaker 1: there was a certain aloofness that was required with being
- 11:06Speaker 1: Willie Mays, with being Barry Bonds. So that was like
- 11:08Speaker 1: part of the influence. On top of the fact that
- 11:10Speaker 1: not only were those influences not suffering fools, Bobby Bonds,
- 11:14Speaker 1: a little bit cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, if I'm being honest.
- 11:17Speaker 1: A few stories in that book that are like, oh boy,
- 11:19Speaker 1: this is a lot. Barry Bonds had a lot going
- 11:23Speaker 1: on with him that turned into him being a great
- 11:25Speaker 1: baseball player and One would argue, could argue, and many
- 11:30Speaker 1: have argued, the man that saved baseball in San Francisco.
- 11:33Speaker 1: They were getting ready to take the San Francisco Giants
- 11:36Speaker 1: and to move them into that shithole in St. Petersburg,
- 11:39Speaker 1: Florida that they have been trying to get out of
- 11:42Speaker 1: for 30 years. They spent a decade or so trying
- 11:45Speaker 1: to get somebody to move into it. Now they've been
- 11:47Speaker 1: trying to get out of there forever. The Giants were
- 11:50Speaker 1: going there. They signed Barry Bonds, 1993, the year of
- 11:53Speaker 1: the last great pennant chase in baseball where it came
- 11:56Speaker 1: all the way down to the end. with the Braves
- 11:58Speaker 1: and the Giants. And Barry Bonds hitting 46 home runs
- 12:01Speaker 1: and 123 RBIs in Candlestick Park is one of the
- 12:06Speaker 1: unreal power-hitting seasons that anybody has ever had. Listen, let's
- 12:13Speaker 1: slash for a minute.
- 12:13Speaker 3: 336, 458, 677. Crazy.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Crazy.
- 12:14Speaker 1: With 43 intentional walks. I.
- 12:24Speaker 3: I don't know in an individual sport if you can
- 12:27Speaker 3: show fear more than pitchers had to show fear around
- 12:32Speaker 3: the late 90s, early aughts when it came to Barry Bonds.
- 12:36Speaker 3: I mean, we go forward in the 0-3 season where
- 12:38Speaker 3: they have 112 intentionals when it was like, all right, guys,
- 12:41Speaker 3: this is just ridiculous.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It was 0-4 and it was 120.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I took eight off there.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Yes. 120 walks for a season is phenomenal. 120 times
- 12:51Speaker 3: you come in the bat and people have been like,
- 12:53Speaker 3: I don't even want it.
- 12:54Speaker 1: One of the Diamondbacks who did it a couple of
- 12:57Speaker 1: times that year. In 2000, I'll never forget that. They
- 13:00Speaker 1: walked him with the bases, intentionally walked him with the
- 13:02Speaker 1: bases loaded. the single most disrespectful thing that you can
- 13:07Speaker 1: do to the people who bad behind you.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:11Speaker 1: But before we get there though, I think it's important
- 13:14Speaker 1: to note, even in those years where bonds is not
- 13:17Speaker 1: winning the MVP led the league and wins above replacement
- 13:20Speaker 1: in 95 in 96 and in 1998. And let's stop
- 13:23Speaker 1: on that one right there in that book. Jeff Perlman
- 13:31Speaker 1: relays a story that I've known Jeff for 20 years.
- 13:34Speaker 1: All these things I'm inclined to believe that this story
- 13:36Speaker 1: is true. There are people who are in this story
- 13:40Speaker 1: that have denied it, but I also notice sometimes you
- 13:42Speaker 1: got to do what you got to do. Barry Bonds
- 13:45Speaker 1: hit 37 home runs and 122 RBI that year. He
- 13:50Speaker 1: led the league and wins above replacement. Slash in 303, 438, 609.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Led the league in intentional walks. Okay, right? Barry Bonds
- 14:03Speaker 1: stood in a room. I think it was in Florida.
- 14:05Speaker 1: It was with Ken Griffey Jr. I forget who else
- 14:07Speaker 1: was there. But he says, per this telling, I had
- 14:12Speaker 1: a great year this year. And nobody cares because 98
- 14:17Speaker 1: is the year that McGuire hit 70, and Sosa hit 65,
- 14:20Speaker 1: and it was all about them. Nobody cares. And these
- 14:24Speaker 1: guys are juicing. And everybody knows they're juicing. It's obvious
- 14:28Speaker 1: they're juicing. And I'm going to just do it, and
- 14:32Speaker 1: we're going to see what happens. Now, per the telling
- 14:35Speaker 1: of the story, Griffey was like, yeah, you got it,
- 14:37Speaker 1: big dog. I'm not going down that road. But that's
- 14:41Speaker 1: the telling of that story. That is making– it makes
- 14:45Speaker 1: the 1999 season the first one where one might plausibly
- 14:49Speaker 1: say that Barry Bonds was taking performance-enhancing drugs. I make
- 14:54Speaker 1: the argument– And I understand why one would argue that
- 14:58Speaker 1: this is shooting a man bail, but that's not really yet.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I think this is the truth. The reason that you
- 15:03Speaker 1: make performance enhancing drugs impermissible is to not put pressure
- 15:09Speaker 1: on the rest of the guys that they have to
- 15:12Speaker 1: do this in order to keep up. Now, did Bonds
- 15:15Speaker 1: need to take performance enhancing drugs to compete?
- 15:19Speaker 3: No.
- 15:20Speaker 1: But did Bonds need to take performance-enhancing drugs to receive
- 15:23Speaker 1: the credit that he believed that he deserved for being
- 15:26Speaker 1: Barry Bonds? He was eighth in the MVP voting that year.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Eighth and led the league in wins above replacement.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:33Speaker 1: To be treated as Barry Bonds is supposed to be treated,
- 15:36Speaker 1: by that time, yeah, probably did need to do it.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And then he did it. And the next year, in
- 15:43Speaker 1: 102 games, 34 homers, 83 RBIs, because that's the year
- 15:45Speaker 1: he hurt his back. 2000 is when this kind of
- 15:53Speaker 1: sort of starts cracking. 143 games, 49 homers, 106 RBIs,
- 16:00Speaker 1: 117 walks against 77 strikeouts, led the league in OPS +,
- 16:05Speaker 1: which is adjusting OPS for ballpark effects, and did not
- 16:09Speaker 1: win the MVP because they gave it to Jeff Kent,
- 16:13Speaker 1: who had Barry Bonds hitting behind him.
- 16:19Speaker 2: And also.
- 16:22Speaker 2: They weren't the closest of pals, too.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Well, neither were they the closest of pals. Neither of
- 16:28Speaker 1: them was the nicest guy.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:31Speaker 3: So the cost of doing business effect I find fascinating because...
- 16:36Speaker 3: if you're talking about Barry Bonds in a room with.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Ken Griffey Jr.
- 16:40Speaker 3: By the way, Frank Thomas, who did this on a
- 16:43Speaker 3: much more understated level, you go back to the Giambi MVP,
- 16:48Speaker 3: where Frank was like, hey, y'all, y'all see.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Anything different about what's going on there?
- 16:53Speaker 3: I'm just out here getting 30 home runs, 100 RBIs,
- 16:56Speaker 3: 100 walks every year.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Like always. Hey, just being the greatest right-hand hitter of
- 17:00Speaker 2: my generation. It's like Frank did it on the low.
- 17:03Speaker 1: And I've always been this big. Right.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Shout out to Auburn football.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Right. He saw the guy in Sammy Sosa who went
- 17:14Speaker 3: from like he was his nickname was the Panther. Like
- 17:17Speaker 3: he was this sleek athlete that the White Sox traded
- 17:20Speaker 3: out of their farm system to go, you know, send
- 17:22Speaker 3: him over to Chicago to the Cubs for George Bell.
- 17:25Speaker 3: And then he turned into what we saw. And the
- 17:28Speaker 3: baseball has been Betty, Betty good to me stuff. And
- 17:30Speaker 3: then also you've got Mark McGuire, who for years, the
- 17:35Speaker 3: injuries kind of kept people off enough.
- 17:38Speaker 1: He fell off because his first four years, he was
- 17:41Speaker 1: the first player in major league history to hit 30
- 17:43Speaker 1: home runs his first four years. And then he couldn't
- 17:45Speaker 1: hit his weight. And then all of a sudden it
- 17:49Speaker 1: became like anything we'd seen.
- 17:51Speaker 2: And Barry is sitting in the cut like.
- 17:54Speaker 3: He had a Snoop Dogg at the Source Awards moment.
- 17:58Speaker 2: He's like, wait a minute. You mean to tell me.
- 18:00Speaker 3: MLB and fans ain't got no love for Barry Bonds
- 18:03Speaker 3: and the West Coast?
- 18:04Speaker 2: Well, let it be known then. And then he did
- 18:08Speaker 2: whatever he had to do. I was always... So, so intrigued.
- 18:12Speaker 3: By the fact that a sport that had made its
- 18:15Speaker 3: bones on wink, wink, nudge, nudge, cheating and getting the
- 18:19Speaker 3: upper hand and getting the advantage for generations. You know,
- 18:23Speaker 3: we go back to amphetamines and greenies and special coffee
- 18:27Speaker 3: pots and stealing signs. Like, we understand the culture of baseball.
- 18:32Speaker 3: But when this thing happened, oh, you would have thought nothing.
- 18:36Speaker 3: the gatekeeper's brains were being broken because he was taking things.
- 18:41Speaker 2: That were so historic.
- 18:42Speaker 3: And so, like, the numbers matter in that sport more
- 18:45Speaker 3: than any other. So for him to do what he
- 18:47Speaker 3: did in a four-year span from the time he looked
- 18:49Speaker 3: at these cats who were being celebrated that couldn't tie
- 18:52Speaker 3: his shoes in his mind, oh, yeah, he went on
- 18:55Speaker 3: a madman tour.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Well, let's get to... I think that some of the
- 18:59Speaker 1: things that happened in that run... with other guys in
- 19:02Speaker 1: the league can be kind of easy to ignore because
- 19:06Speaker 1: it's so many of them that I don't think that people,
- 19:10Speaker 1: as somebody who's from Houston, I always found it interesting
- 19:14Speaker 1: that it is Bagwell who always had to deal with
- 19:17Speaker 1: the allegations. Bagwell was hitting home runs off the rip
- 19:22Speaker 1: coming into the league. He was always the one that
- 19:24Speaker 1: had to deal with the allegations. In his late 30s,
- 19:28Speaker 1: Craig Biggio becomes a center fielder and is now hitting
- 19:33Speaker 1: a guy that was hitting single-digit home runs when he
- 19:35Speaker 1: was young is now hitting 25 home runs. I don't
- 19:39Speaker 1: care if it's because he went to a smaller ballpark
- 19:40Speaker 1: or not. If we're just dealing with what it was on, like,
- 19:44Speaker 1: just reading off the screen, and both of those guys
- 19:46Speaker 1: got into the Hall of Fame, neither of them has
- 19:47Speaker 1: been credibly accused by anybody. But we know... Bagwell's the
- 19:50Speaker 1: one that had to shake the allegations Biggio had the
- 19:55Speaker 1: list of red flags on his sheet. That guy was
- 19:59Speaker 1: not in line with what it was that we were
- 20:00Speaker 1: thinking about or what we were looking for. For me,
- 20:03Speaker 1: I feel like everybody has a different season that they
- 20:05Speaker 1: look at from that period and being like, hey, man,
- 20:07Speaker 1: you guys knew what was going on for me. And
- 20:09Speaker 1: for me, it is Brady Anderson hitting 50 home runs
- 20:12Speaker 1: in 1996.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Well, come on.
- 20:15Speaker 1: That was the one.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Look at that 0-1 season. Look at where Luis Gonzalez
- 20:21Speaker 2: finishes in the MVP race.
- 20:23Speaker 1: He had 57 home runs.
- 20:26Speaker 3: 57. If you saw Luis Gonzalez early 90s, you're like, oh,
- 20:30Speaker 3: you know, outfielder, slender build.
- 20:32Speaker 2: All of a sudden, he turned into the ultimate warrior.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Right? Shit. In the Giants lineup, you take a look
- 20:39Speaker 3: at what Rich Aurelia did that year. Rich Aurelia had
- 20:42Speaker 3: 37 home runs that year. I want you to guess
- 20:45Speaker 3: how many seasons it took him after that 37 home
- 20:48Speaker 3: run year to get 37 home runs again. It took
- 20:50Speaker 3: him two and a half seasons, I think, to get
- 20:52Speaker 3: 37 after that. Like, it was an understood, like, everybody
- 20:57Speaker 3: in the game had one of those Mario mushrooms.
- 21:00Speaker 2: And if you got the regular one or if you
- 21:01Speaker 2: got the green one with.
- 21:02Speaker 3: The fireballs, you would cook like Eric Gagné came out
- 21:06Speaker 3: of nowhere and is saving games and spitting and throwing
- 21:10Speaker 3: 100 miles an hour. Like, there were things that were
- 21:12Speaker 3: happening in the game. The power-ups that were being had
- 21:15Speaker 3: by so many players across the sport, it kind of made... And,
- 21:19Speaker 3: of course, Barry, you know, and Sammy and Mark McGuire
- 21:22Speaker 3: took the brunt of it.
- 21:23Speaker 2: But Barry being the one.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Who was the face of it because of the records
- 21:27Speaker 3: that were being broken, everything in that game changed.
- 21:30Speaker 1: And, you know.
- 21:31Speaker 2: They marketed it as well. Chicks dig the long ball.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Like, I remember these marketing campaigns that wouldn't have happened
- 21:39Speaker 3: had it not been for Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa
- 21:42Speaker 3: and Mark McGuire. But we kind of, I won't say
- 21:46Speaker 3: let Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa off the hook, but
- 21:49Speaker 3: the Barry thing still, it still resonates in a way
- 21:52Speaker 3: where one of the game's greatest players will never, ever
- 21:55Speaker 3: see the Hall of Fame because, you know, of the allegations.
- 21:59Speaker 1: And he was so clearly reactive. Like, oh, it ain't
- 22:02Speaker 1: no rules, huh?
- 22:03Speaker 2: All right, then.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Shit, it ain't no rules, right? Fine. And coming up next,
- 22:10Speaker 1: we're going to get into the 2001 season itself because, well,
- 22:18Speaker 1: it was so unreal. Who cares what it took to

- 23:43Speaker 1: Run your game. All right, we are back with my
- 23:46Speaker 1: man Jason Goff. All right, I put this into one
- 23:49Speaker 1: of the bots, right? I'm just going to run through
- 23:52Speaker 1: some things for you. Barry Bonds in 2001 hit 11
- 23:58Speaker 1: home runs in April. Cold-ass San Francisco April at the ballpark.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Wind blowing in.
- 24:06Speaker 1: He had 11 home runs. And he went from one
- 24:10Speaker 1: pitcher's park to another pitcher's park. That damn water over
- 24:15Speaker 1: the fence. Let me tell you who hit balls into that.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Barry Bonds. Basically, every now and then somebody else might
- 24:22Speaker 1: get in there, but it's just Barry Bonds. Segal season
- 24:25Speaker 1: walk record, 177. Barry Bonds broke it. He had 107
- 24:31Speaker 1: extra base hits. His OPS plus was 259. That is 159%
- 24:36Speaker 1: better than the average hitter. One of the greatest wins
- 24:44Speaker 1: above replacement seasons that there has ever been. And what
- 24:49Speaker 1: has happened historically with these home run chases is that
- 24:54Speaker 1: guys run out of gas at the end. Like the
- 24:57Speaker 1: thing about amphetamines and the difference, I think, between the
- 24:59Speaker 1: way people receive amphetamine use and steroid use is is
- 25:03Speaker 1: that people felt like amphetamine use was getting people back
- 25:05Speaker 1: to level because they were grinding out this very, very
- 25:07Speaker 1: difficult season, and it felt like steroids was taking cast
- 25:10Speaker 1: to places that they never could get. That plus important
- 25:13Speaker 1: thing with Bonds is that elbow guard that allowed him
- 25:15Speaker 1: to then just stand over the plate, and it was
- 25:18Speaker 1: absolutely like that. That's the one. If somebody wants to
- 25:20Speaker 1: argue that about the elbow guard, all right, I got you.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Just know you can't go there. Scott, this man hit,
- 25:27Speaker 1: in the last 56 games, 393 with 31 homers and
- 25:31Speaker 1: 59 RBIs. Remember, Reggie Jackson once had 39 home runs
- 25:36Speaker 1: at the All-Star break, as Bonds did, and didn't even
- 25:39Speaker 1: hit 50 that year. Didn't even hit 50.
- 25:46Speaker 2: There was a stat that I saw that if.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Babe Ruth, in his greatest home run hitting season, entered
- 25:54Speaker 3: the final month of the season.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Where Barry had his 73.
- 25:58Speaker 3: He would have to go something crazy like 19 for
- 26:02Speaker 3: 30 in the final few games to reach it.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Like the way that he.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Established, not only because I think he had, he had what, 60,
- 26:14Speaker 3: 59 going into the final month or something like that
- 26:18Speaker 3: and ended up with 73. Like it wasn't some, you know,
- 26:22Speaker 3: a fait accompli thing. It wasn't where we were watching
- 26:25Speaker 3: Aaron Judge a few years ago.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Like, man, is he going to get to that?
- 26:28Speaker 3: He was, he was tracking it down in a way
- 26:30Speaker 3: in that final month that kind of, you know, It
- 26:34Speaker 3: was astounding because nobody was... You have to get pitched
- 26:38Speaker 3: to at a ridiculous amount to even sniff 50, then
- 26:42Speaker 3: to get to 60, and then hit 73.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Nobody was pitching to him at this point. So he
- 26:47Speaker 2: would only go... He would go games where he wouldn't
- 26:50Speaker 2: see a pitch.
- 26:51Speaker 3: He would go a whole series where he'd have two
- 26:53Speaker 3: pitches to hit at all. And he would hit those
- 26:56Speaker 3: two pitches for the series.
- 26:57Speaker 1: And baseball was relevant in a much different way, man.
- 27:01Speaker 1: ESPN is patching in on every Barry Bonds at bat.
- 27:06Speaker 1: It had just gotten to be. And look, they had
- 27:07Speaker 1: done that in 98 also with something McGuire and Sosa.
- 27:11Speaker 1: But something was just different about this, man. And part
- 27:14Speaker 1: of it was because Maguire had such a classic, like,
- 27:18Speaker 1: home run hitter swing and, you know, the brawny paper
- 27:21Speaker 1: towel guy, all this. It was bonds with that short,
- 27:24Speaker 1: compact swing, right? The exact same swing that your baseball
- 27:27Speaker 1: coach would tell you to have because the rest of
- 27:29Speaker 1: you boys– Y'all wasn't going to be out here hitting
- 27:31Speaker 1: home runs like that, right? Shorten up. Get the bat
- 27:34Speaker 1: through the zone. Make it happen.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Two-strike swings. Yep.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Fonz is doing that.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Two-strike B-hack.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Fonz is doing that on every bat. And think about this.
- 27:42Speaker 1: In July, he only had six. He had double-digit home
- 27:45Speaker 1: runs in every other full month. July, he only had six.
- 27:48Speaker 1: But listen to what he did do in July. 302
- 27:50Speaker 1: with a 492 on base percentage and a 651 slugging percentage. Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:03Speaker 3: This was at the time, too, where wasn't the inflatable
- 28:06Speaker 3: syringes were being thrown on the field like all all
- 28:09Speaker 3: the things. It seemed as if it was San Francisco
- 28:11Speaker 3: against the world, too, in a weird way where they
- 28:14Speaker 3: were the.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Only ones who were truly rooting in a in a.
- 28:17Speaker 3: In a fan way for this, and then the gatekeepers
- 28:21Speaker 3: and the baseball public outside and the teams who were
- 28:23Speaker 3: getting their ass kicked by Barry Bonds and the Giants
- 28:26Speaker 3: were like, no, no, we can't have this.
- 28:28Speaker 2: This is sacrilegious.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Well, this is my question, to be fair to everybody else.
- 28:34Speaker 1: How would Bonds making this run have been received if
- 28:39Speaker 1: 98 hadn't just been three years earlier, right? So let's
- 28:44Speaker 1: say that Bonds was the one who did this in 98.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And he wound up with 70 home runs. There is
- 28:50Speaker 1: no McGuire. There is no Sosa. He breaks the Roger
- 28:53Speaker 1: Maris record. Because by the time we got here, the
- 28:55Speaker 1: Maris record had stood for longer than the Ruth record
- 28:58Speaker 1: had stood on the front end. So let's say it
- 29:03Speaker 1: goes that way. And that Bonds breaks 62. And we
- 29:07Speaker 1: haven't had the feeling of seeing that happen before. And
- 29:10Speaker 1: what happened in 98 was also doubly interesting because it
- 29:13Speaker 1: was a race and you had the contrast between those
- 29:17Speaker 1: two guys. You wound up with McGuire breaking the record
- 29:20Speaker 1: with Sosa on the same field and then Sosa catching him.
- 29:25Speaker 1: And then it going all the way until the end.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Like even it remained compelling even after the record had
- 29:30Speaker 1: been broken. So if Bonds had broken it first, I
- 29:34Speaker 1: wonder if people would have received it a little different
- 29:36Speaker 1: because there would have been a different novelty to it
- 29:39Speaker 1: than there was when we were like, shit, man, we
- 29:40Speaker 1: just did this a little while ago.
- 29:44Speaker 2: I think people hated him enough, though, right?
- 29:46Speaker 3: Like, Sammy, until it wasn't cute anymore, was the cute, cuddly,
- 29:54Speaker 3: you know, baseball player from Latin America, and he... I
- 29:59Speaker 3: remember shortly after 9-11, he ran around the baseball diamond
- 30:03Speaker 3: with the flag out. And, of course, Mark McGuire being,
- 30:07Speaker 3: like you mentioned, the Paul Bunyan-esque.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Figure in baseball.
- 30:11Speaker 3: There were different affects and different dynamics to their not
- 30:14Speaker 3: only personality, but what they look like, right? Barry never
- 30:19Speaker 3: really seemed like he needed anybody to like him nor cared.
- 30:23Speaker 3: So I think it would have been the same shit
- 30:26Speaker 3: that came out to me. I think the same people
- 30:29Speaker 3: who didn't like Barry for whatever reasons, he was touching
- 30:32Speaker 3: something that only the gods of that sport who they had,
- 30:36Speaker 3: you know, bowed down to for generations before had touched.
- 30:40Speaker 3: So I think it would have been, I truly think
- 30:43Speaker 3: he would have gotten the same scrutiny and the same
- 30:45Speaker 3: respect Backlash, just from the simple fact that he wasn't
- 30:50Speaker 3: this cuddly character that the other two guys were. I'm
- 30:53Speaker 3: not saying that Mark McGuire was, but he even had
- 30:56Speaker 3: the cute Bash Brothers thing going on in Oakland with
- 30:59Speaker 3: him and Jose Canseco when we were watching two cats
- 31:02Speaker 3: who were juiced out of their minds out there playing
- 31:04Speaker 3: in Oakland, right?
- 31:05Speaker 2: Underneath Tony La Russa. By the way, look at Tony's wins.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I mean, top to bottom.
- 31:11Speaker 3: It's like looking at Phil Jackson saying he never won
- 31:15Speaker 3: without Shaq or Kobe or Michael or Scottie. Tony always
- 31:18Speaker 3: had one of them boys on his roster throughout his career. So,
- 31:23Speaker 3: you know, Barry just had a different vibe to him.
- 31:27Speaker 3: I think it would have been the same, to be
- 31:29Speaker 3: honest with you, if he would have done it first.
- 31:31Speaker 3: I think those two dudes doing it in the manner
- 31:33Speaker 3: that they did it kind of, I don't want to
- 31:35Speaker 3: say softened the blow, but it made everybody aware, okay,
- 31:38Speaker 3: this shit is going on, y'all.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Instead of it being, oh, wait a minute, the.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Guy that we have been kind of conditioned by him
- 31:45Speaker 3: and by the outside forces not to like has arrived
- 31:48Speaker 3: here now.
- 31:49Speaker 2: I think it would have been the same.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Something else I think that's interesting to consider about him
- 31:54Speaker 1: in 01 is 9-11 is around this. Like he hits homers,
- 32:01Speaker 1: I want to say, yeah, it was 60-61 and 62
- 32:03Speaker 1: on September 9th.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Wow.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Right?
- 32:07Speaker 1: So that's Sunday. Tuesday is 9-11. We talk a lot
- 32:13Speaker 1: about the different things that, you know, happen in sport
- 32:16Speaker 1: after 9-11, like these things, you know, that brought us
- 32:18Speaker 1: together as a country and showed us what sport could be. But, interestingly,
- 32:23Speaker 1: this is never really put on the list as one
- 32:25Speaker 1: of them. Like, this is a month, you know, not
- 32:28Speaker 1: even a full month after all these things have happened
- 32:30Speaker 1: and Barry Bonds has just broken the home run record.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Man, I... I lean back on it.
- 32:37Speaker 3: I don't think that there has ever been a greater
- 32:41Speaker 3: figure in his or her sport that the sport has
- 32:45Speaker 3: tried to consciously forget.
- 32:48Speaker 2: And erase and speak against like this.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Like you can go you can go back to O.J. Simpson. Right.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Where it's like, all right, let's take this Heisman out
- 32:59Speaker 3: of here. Let's let's take these numbers down. Let's never
- 33:01Speaker 3: let's never mention him when we talk about great running
- 33:03Speaker 3: backs again. But I don't know that it's happened in
- 33:06Speaker 3: that way. I think it's all part of it. The
- 33:09Speaker 3: Barry Bonds PR collage that, you know, like you said,
- 33:13Speaker 3: in a in a American history type of way. those
- 33:18Speaker 3: moments weren't highlighted or even, you know, I haven't thought
- 33:23Speaker 3: about it since you, you know, since then. You just
- 33:25Speaker 3: mentioned in this, Him getting 61, 62, 63 in that
- 33:29Speaker 3: short amount of time, in that time period, where we're
- 33:32Speaker 3: talking about what sports mean to us and celebrating when
- 33:36Speaker 3: George Bush goes out onto the mound with the bulletproof
- 33:40Speaker 3: vest on underneath the jacket to throw a first pitch
- 33:43Speaker 3: of the World Series.
- 33:44Speaker 2: All that was going on.
- 33:45Speaker 3: I don't think that anybody in their respective sport who
- 33:48Speaker 3: has been truly a giant, no pun intended, like Barry Bonds,
- 33:52Speaker 3: has been this consciously.
- 33:56Speaker 2: wiped from history. I don't know that it's happening.
- 33:59Speaker 3: And for it to be that stark a contrast in
- 34:03Speaker 3: terms of greatest of all time, like his numbers, I mean,
- 34:06Speaker 3: that season was one of the starts of it, but
- 34:08Speaker 3: like his numbers are just ridiculous.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I mean, I'd wind up every few years and I
- 34:13Speaker 1: haven't done it in a long time and somebody would
- 34:15Speaker 1: pop up and make the argument that Ken Griffey Jr.
- 34:17Speaker 1: was just as good as Barry Bonds. And no, the
- 34:20Speaker 1: best Ken Griffey Jr. season is an average Barry Bonds season.
- 34:25Speaker 1: And that's not– that is like if you use war
- 34:28Speaker 1: as the metric, the best Ken Griffey Jr. season is
- 34:33Speaker 1: an average Barry Bonds season. And that is not an
- 34:36Speaker 1: insult to Ken Griffey Jr. That's just what Barry Bonds
- 34:39Speaker 1: was hitting on. And, again, a lot of that is
- 34:42Speaker 1: even if you start removing those big years, right, if
- 34:45Speaker 1: you start removing 2001 through 2004, you're still looking like,
- 34:50Speaker 1: I'm going to check this out now.
- 34:51Speaker 3: And Ken had the injuries– in the Cincinnati portion of
- 34:55Speaker 3: that career, right?
- 34:56Speaker 2: So it's like, you know, and he was still ridiculous.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Don't get it twisted. But his body started breaking down. And,
- 35:03Speaker 2: you know, Ken Griffey Jr.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Is probably, you know, what, top four or five center
- 35:09Speaker 3: fielder of that generation in terms of defensively. And then offensively,
- 35:14Speaker 3: remember when 500 home runs was, you know, you hit 500,
- 35:17Speaker 3: you was the man.
- 35:19Speaker 1: 400 basically got you in. There were a couple of exceptions,
- 35:22Speaker 1: like a Dave Kingman would pop up here and there,
- 35:24Speaker 1: but that's why the steroids mess things up for people
- 35:27Speaker 1: a lot, because gauging what these numbers means became borderline impossible.
- 35:31Speaker 1: But listen to this. Ken Griffey Jr. had two seasons
- 35:35Speaker 1: above nine wins over replacement. 9.7 in 96, 9.1 in 97.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Barry Bonds has got a 9.7, a 9.0, a 9.9,
- 35:39Speaker 1: a 9.7, and that's before we get... to the 11-9, 11-7, 9-2,
- 35:52Speaker 1: 10-6 that you get late. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 35:56Speaker 1: There's no shade to anybody here, man.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Not at all.
- 36:00Speaker 1: This was just something completely different. In the 01-04 race,
- 36:03Speaker 1: it really was like watching a superhero because obviously the
- 36:07Speaker 1: PEDs shroud what happened. But he wasn't the only one
- 36:11Speaker 1: that was on him. Everybody else was on him. None
- 36:14Speaker 1: of them were looking like this. He won the batting
- 36:16Speaker 1: title twice in that run. A 370 and a 362. What? What?
- 36:29Speaker 1: On base percentage, over 500 in those four years. The
- 36:33Speaker 1: lowest slugging percentage in those four years was 749. My God.
- 36:37Speaker 3: One of.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Those years, he had 120 intentional walks.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Just think too, this is the era of launch angles
- 36:49Speaker 3: and not giving a shit about strikeouts.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Can you imagine? in the late 90s or early.
- 36:54Speaker 3: Aughts, if hitting coaches and baseball people around the game
- 36:58Speaker 3: were like, hey, we don't care about them strikeouts. Like,
- 37:01Speaker 3: Barry was embarrassed when he got 92 strikeouts in a year,
- 37:04Speaker 3: or 90 strikeouts in a year.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Listen to this. Can you imagine if.
- 37:07Speaker 2: They was trying to hit home, he was trying to
- 37:09Speaker 2: hit home runs?
- 37:10Speaker 1: 2001, 177 walks and 93 strikeouts. 02, 198 to 47. 03,
- 37:11Speaker 1: 148 to 58. And 04... 232 walks, 41 strikeouts.
- 37:26Speaker 2: That 0-4 season. That is the shit where.
- 37:31Speaker 3: You look at certain dudes and you got one of
- 37:34Speaker 3: your homies who's got really good results with the ladies,
- 37:38Speaker 3: shall we say.
- 37:39Speaker 2: And you got the.
- 37:40Speaker 3: Hater in the corner like, man, when is enough enough?
- 37:43Speaker 1: You got to have all the girls, Marcus. That old
- 37:46Speaker 1: 4C is like, all right, big dog.
- 37:55Speaker 2: You proved your point. You know what I mean? Like,
- 37:57Speaker 2: he's just sitting there throwing the damn towel. Like, you
- 38:00Speaker 2: can't look.
- 38:01Speaker 3: At anybody with 200 walks in the face and be like, hey, man,
- 38:04Speaker 3: you cool? Like, do you not hate this game enough
- 38:08Speaker 3: that you out here obliterating records like that?
- 38:11Speaker 1: You've seen Greg Maddux talk about pitching to Bonds.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Yes.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Where he's like, yeah, it's the easiest thing in the world.
- 38:18Speaker 1: You don't throw him anything. At all.
- 38:21Speaker 2: At all.
- 38:21Speaker 1: He's like, look, I got to get 27 outs.
- 38:24Speaker 2: At all.
- 38:25Speaker 1: This isn't wonderful.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Not at all.
- 38:27Speaker 4: Hey, the total basis for me is like point differential
- 38:31Speaker 4: for you when it comes to NFL teams where I'm
- 38:33Speaker 4: just like how many of these bitches you collected he
- 38:36Speaker 4: has he had a 400 total base yeah I think
- 38:40Speaker 4: he had maybe two but I'm sure 411 bases just
- 38:45Speaker 4: walking around to your local park Cincinnati coming to you
- 38:50Speaker 4: LA coming to you I am collecting these bitches one
- 38:53Speaker 4: by one you can give me all four or you
- 38:55Speaker 4: can give me that one I'm old.
- 38:58Speaker 3: I'm long in the tooth now. I'm not stealing nothing.
- 39:00Speaker 3: So if you give me the one, you know, hopefully.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Richard really is.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Plus a little heavier than it used to be, you
- 39:05Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? I can't really move around like.
- 39:07Speaker 2: That no more.
- 39:08Speaker 1: I wonder what that's about.
- 39:09Speaker 2: That was the thing, dog. His head turned into a piano.
- 39:13Speaker 2: You want to.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Look at, like people are like.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Look at how he filled out his uniform. It was ridiculous.
- 39:20Speaker 3: I remember the first time that they, Ray Rattle and
- 39:23Speaker 3: the boys got it got their glint first glanced at
- 39:26Speaker 3: him after that training it was a spring training of
- 39:29Speaker 3: uh like 2000 and like look at the way his
- 39:32Speaker 3: jersey is fitting him something's not right here i'm like
- 39:35Speaker 3: to hell with that you ain't never seen a brother
- 39:37Speaker 3: go from a seven and five age fitted to an
- 39:39Speaker 3: eight and a quarter.
- 39:40Speaker 1: In your life in your life all he was missing
- 39:45Speaker 1: was the braces that was the only thing he was
- 39:50Speaker 1: missing like that's the thing about it back in the
- 39:52Speaker 1: day man like reporters gotta be honest with themselves and
- 39:55Speaker 1: I don't know what they were supposed to do necessarily
- 39:57Speaker 1: cause you can't just come out here and be like
- 39:58Speaker 1: look at him it's obvious but at the same time
- 40:01Speaker 1: look at him it's obvious right like it was all
- 40:05Speaker 1: these dudes all the I wish I would've said something
- 40:09Speaker 1: I know you do and if this same shit happen
- 40:11Speaker 1: again you do the exact same thing cause you can't
- 40:13Speaker 1: just come out there and say it It's just they
- 40:16Speaker 1: thought they got McGuire when they caught him with that
- 40:18Speaker 1: andro in the locker. And that was light work. That
- 40:21Speaker 1: was light work.
- 40:22Speaker 2: That's Advil now.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. And he had his boys at Balco ready
- 40:28Speaker 1: to hold it down. Chris Carter. I forgot. I forgot
- 40:32Speaker 1: about Greg Anderson. I forgot about Greg Anderson. And that
- 40:35Speaker 1: was the other thing, too. I already gave. Did you
- 40:37Speaker 1: ever read Game of Shadows?
- 40:39Speaker 2: I did not.
- 40:40Speaker 1: I read Game of Shadows is a really interesting read
- 40:43Speaker 1: in part because it lets you know baseball's done a
- 40:45Speaker 1: good job. But it was like there's always more money
- 40:47Speaker 1: in the dope than there is in catching them.
- 40:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 40:49Speaker 1: The incentives for them to keep up are always different.
- 40:52Speaker 1: And so you just read it and you were like, oh,
- 40:53Speaker 1: they'll always they'll always be a step behind who the
- 40:55Speaker 1: guys were. But the thing is, I think I can't
- 40:57Speaker 1: remember if it was on a Perlman's book or Game
- 40:59Speaker 1: of Shadows, but they're like, yo, him and Greg Anderson
- 41:01Speaker 1: wasn't even that cool. And Greg Anderson was willing to
- 41:04Speaker 1: go to, that's a first about a whole boy hall
- 41:06Speaker 1: of famer. He was willing to go to jail before
- 41:08Speaker 1: he told on Barry Bonds.
- 41:10Speaker 2: I'll put some money on your books. You're going to
- 41:13Speaker 2: go to a camp. So it ain't going to be,
- 41:15Speaker 2: you know, Jim pop. You feel me? You ain't going
- 41:17Speaker 2: to have, you know, the, the, the Lord do this.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Did he issues? Right? Like you ain't going to be
- 41:22Speaker 2: in there slanging a bang. Hey, we'll send you some,
- 41:25Speaker 2: put a little something on your books.
- 41:26Speaker 1: And then when you get out, you ain't got to
- 41:28Speaker 1: do nothing.
- 41:29Speaker 2: But go to that bank account.
- 41:30Speaker 1: That's it.
- 41:30Speaker 2: That's it.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Welcome home. Welcome home, baby. Welcome home.
- 41:35Speaker 3: And when Avon get in the car, you pick me
- 41:37Speaker 3: up in this shit right here.
- 41:39Speaker 2: No, no, no. We got a sweatsuit and an Escalade
- 41:42Speaker 2: in the parking lot for you, player. Thank you so
- 41:44Speaker 2: much for your service.
- 41:45Speaker 1: But I can't explain to people what the level of
- 41:46Speaker 1: excitement was around. No matter how it was that people
- 41:49Speaker 1: felt about him, you could not take your eyes off
- 41:52Speaker 1: what it was. You just couldn't. And I think it
- 41:54Speaker 1: was helpful for him in baseball also because despite the
- 41:57Speaker 1: way that people felt about him, baseball is assessed so quantitatively.
- 42:03Speaker 1: That hating became borderline impossible because they are ruled by numbers.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Not in this city. Hating was hating ran rampant. And I,
- 42:17Speaker 3: I still to this day, you know, there's a tinge
- 42:21Speaker 3: of the schism, and then it became a heaping helping
- 42:26Speaker 3: of the schism.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Where you're like, hey, y'all, you know you're getting very close.
- 42:31Speaker 3: To saying some very wild things about a sport, right? Like,
- 42:35Speaker 3: baseball holds people in a way that other sports don't.
- 42:38Speaker 3: So when people are deemed to be cheating or not
- 42:42Speaker 3: playing it fair, and then on top of it, those
- 42:45Speaker 3: same people are giving you their ass to kiss, oh,
- 42:47Speaker 3: my God. It was raining fire. And you also had
- 42:54Speaker 3: Cubs fans who were forced to hate Sammy Sosa in
- 42:58Speaker 3: a way because it's like, oh shit, he's one of
- 43:00Speaker 3: these guys too.
- 43:01Speaker 2: They already hated Mark McGuire. He went to St. Louis,
- 43:04Speaker 2: the Cardinals thing.
- 43:05Speaker 3: This city especially, I heard some very, very interesting things
- 43:09Speaker 3: said about a dude who, you know, hey, if he's
- 43:12Speaker 3: not as cuddly as you want him to be, that's fine.
- 43:14Speaker 3: But he's walking with the gods of your sport and
- 43:16Speaker 3: no taking it back. Do you know it was up
- 43:18Speaker 3: until about four years ago where people were still, Aaron
- 43:21Speaker 3: Judge had to come out and be like, hey, y'all,
- 43:23Speaker 3: the single season record is 73. Like, we don't have
- 43:25Speaker 3: to do this goofy shit where we're talking about 61
- 43:27Speaker 3: is the real record. And, like, that was the first
- 43:30Speaker 3: time I had really heard Asterisk talk in sports.
- 43:33Speaker 1: You know how they did it. the american league record
- 43:37Speaker 1: right that's how they did it the american league because
- 43:43Speaker 1: that's the other thing too is that the american league
- 43:45Speaker 1: had always been the superior offensive league even prior to
- 43:49Speaker 1: the advent of the designated hitter like all those guys
- 43:52Speaker 1: way up there were american league players and both mcguire
- 43:54Speaker 1: and bonds and so i mean get those those in
- 43:56Speaker 1: there too They were doing this in the National League,
- 43:59Speaker 1: which was a bit uncommon. But the Sosa comp to
- 44:02Speaker 1: Bonds is kind of where I want to wrap this
- 44:04Speaker 1: because I think it is interesting. The Cubs turned their
- 44:10Speaker 1: back on Sammy Sosa in a way that. I don't
- 44:16Speaker 1: think they got nearly enough hell from people out of
- 44:18Speaker 1: town because they put it basically on the fact that
- 44:20Speaker 1: he didn't show up for fan appreciation day. I don't
- 44:23Speaker 1: like his family. I got like fan appreciation day is
- 44:24Speaker 1: like armistice day. Like it's something like it's a national holiday, right? Like,
- 44:28Speaker 1: come on, man. Um, but he got the hell for that.
- 44:31Speaker 1: And then, and this is, I thought was absolutely racist
- 44:34Speaker 1: was the hell he got for taking the interpreter with
- 44:37Speaker 1: him to Congress. At which point Sam made, Sammy made
- 44:40Speaker 1: the right point. He's like, I learned English on the street, uh,
- 44:44Speaker 1: They talking about throwing people in jail. No. I'm bringing
- 44:50Speaker 1: somebody who does this for real. Imagine if he got
- 44:53Speaker 1: caught up like Mark McGuire got caught up. I don't
- 44:56Speaker 1: want to talk about the past.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Right? Rafael Palmeiro.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Rafael Palmeiro, lying ass. Put that finger out there. Roger Clemens,
- 45:04Speaker 1: I'll never forget. Roger Clemens asked them people to have
- 45:07Speaker 1: a hearing so that it appeared he could lie to them.
- 45:12Speaker 1: It appeared, not saying he did, because that has not
- 45:16Speaker 1: been legally proven. However, there's required a suspension of disbelief.
- 45:21Speaker 1: And he asked them to set the whole thing up
- 45:24Speaker 1: for him to come in there. Sammy was like.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Tell them in English that I don't know what the
- 45:31Speaker 2: hell's going on.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Right, there will be no confusion here about what this is.
- 45:36Speaker 1: But the Cubs have like, they basically required Sammy to
- 45:40Speaker 1: give some sort of apology to the Cubs.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Dude.
- 45:43Speaker 1: And then let him come back around.
- 45:45Speaker 3: A whole bunch of slimy shit that went on for
- 45:48Speaker 3: a long time.
- 45:50Speaker 2: And when Sammy, you know.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Because these dudes, when the spotlight goes out, it gets
- 45:53Speaker 3: dark for real. Sammy had to come back.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Sammy didn't get dark. Sammy got the opposite of dark.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Hey, that speaks to a.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Sammy, are you okay? So, Sammy, are you okay? Are
- 46:05Speaker 1: you okay, Sammy?
- 46:06Speaker 2: That speaks to a.
- 46:07Speaker 3: Whole different identity issue and politics in the diaspora that
- 46:13Speaker 3: the homies in the Dominican.
- 46:14Speaker 1: And the Venezuelan can deal with. Sammy is out there
- 46:15Speaker 1: motherfucking looking like Mr. Whitehose from Pips Up, Hose Down.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Sammy had the dirty to wear the pink that one time.
- 46:21Speaker 2: The Count Chocula. Yeah, Sammy, baby.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Come on, dog. Don't do this to me right now.
- 46:27Speaker 2: And Sammy had people in his clubhouse turn on him. Remember,
- 46:30Speaker 2: they smashed his boom box.
- 46:31Speaker 1: They did.
- 46:32Speaker 2: For years, we were like, was it Mark Grace? Was
- 46:34Speaker 2: it Kerry Wood?
- 46:35Speaker 3: He had people turn on him inside of that clubhouse
- 46:38Speaker 3: that he made so much money for and made the
- 46:41Speaker 3: Chicago Cubs a relevant national product.
- 46:44Speaker 1: People loved Sammy.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Loved Sammy.
- 46:47Speaker 1: That year that Bonds hit 73, Sammy hit 64.
- 46:49Speaker 2: He had to hop. He had the kiss. He had
- 46:56Speaker 2: the celebration.
- 46:58Speaker 1: Baseball been very, very good to me.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Very, very good.
- 47:01Speaker 1: He had that down, down. By the way, that might
- 47:05Speaker 1: be the most influential or the most repeated Saturday Night
- 47:08Speaker 1: Live line of all is baseball been very, very good
- 47:12Speaker 1: to me.
- 47:13Speaker 2: Man, that time, that time.
- 47:16Speaker 3: And meanwhile, like I said, my man Frank Thomas is
- 47:18Speaker 3: on the south side. Like, hey, what is it going
- 47:21Speaker 3: to take for a brother with big bones to just get.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Some respect around here? You know what I mean?
- 47:26Speaker 1: I've been this side.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Since I was five.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Two-time MVP.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Yeah, like you notice nobody came after Frank because Frank
- 47:32Speaker 2: was always like, hey, you know who ain't cheating? This guy.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Frank, like, I'll pull it out right now. Let's go.
- 47:40Speaker 1: Give me a cup. I'll whip it out. Boom.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Right now. You know what I mean? Now, what are
- 47:44Speaker 2: we testing for? You know, I had a long night
- 47:48Speaker 2: last night. What are we testing for? But on top
- 47:50Speaker 2: of it, ain't no PDs coming this way. Nah, man.
- 47:54Speaker 3: Sammy was adored until he wasn't adored. And then the
- 47:58Speaker 3: people who caught him on the downslide, They got their
- 48:03Speaker 3: just due. They got their quarter blood out of them.
- 48:08Speaker 2: The quarter blood technique from traded places.
- 48:10Speaker 1: So right fast, I'm going to tell a Frank Thomas story,
- 48:12Speaker 1: and then I'm going to bring up why I brought
- 48:15Speaker 1: up Sammy Sosa. All right. So doing Highly Questionable. And
- 48:20Speaker 1: when Highly Questionable really started to really catch on, people
- 48:23Speaker 1: would be so excited to come on and talk to Papi.
- 48:26Speaker 1: The idea they could talk to Gonzalo would light them up.
- 48:29Speaker 1: I listened to Orlando Skandrick. trying to talk to papi
- 48:32Speaker 1: about rap it's one of the weirdest things i've ever
- 48:34Speaker 1: seen papi you heard the new kodak black new kodak
- 48:36Speaker 1: black papi you heard that and i'm like oh shit
- 48:39Speaker 1: he really thinks what's going on here he really thinks
- 48:42Speaker 1: that papi just be riding around with top down bumping
- 48:47Speaker 1: uh the blazing hip-hop and rb wow this is crazy
- 48:50Speaker 1: um so anyway frank thomas was so excited about papi
- 48:55Speaker 1: being off And Poppy's, you know, classic Poppy questions. Poppy's like, Frank,
- 49:03Speaker 1: tell me about your romantic side. And Frank's like, Poppy,
- 49:09Speaker 1: wherever you say, I'm there. You want to see my side?
- 49:13Speaker 1: I'm wherever you are. And he's like, no, no, no,
- 49:16Speaker 1: your romantic side. Because Papi's not the most progressive man.
- 49:21Speaker 1: He's like, no, no, no, your romantic side. He's like,
- 49:25Speaker 1: I want to be wherever you are.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Papi's like, I don't... Two people just speaking past each other.
- 49:31Speaker 1: I don't think you heard me, big dog. And I remember,
- 49:35Speaker 1: I can't remember if it was me or Dan that's like, hey, man,
- 49:37Speaker 1: we need to just... We need to keep this going. Yeah, yeah,
- 49:42Speaker 1: because I don't know. A rain delay, something. I don't
- 49:45Speaker 1: know what's happening. I don't know if Frank Thomas knows
- 49:49Speaker 1: what he's saying, but I know what Papi is hearing
- 49:51Speaker 1: because it's the same thing I'm hearing, and it's about
- 49:55Speaker 1: to get weird. How the hoes treat me, Frank.
- 50:01Speaker 3: That's what it needed to turn to.
- 50:02Speaker 1: It needed to turn to something else. Because he's just
- 50:06Speaker 1: trying to get next to... He just want to hang
- 50:08Speaker 1: out with Poppy. He's just trying to get next to Poppy.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Poppy right here with the arm bar. This is the
- 50:16Speaker 1: question for entrance right here. No, no. Romantic. Romantic. Like
- 50:24Speaker 1: with girls. No, no, no. There's another story. I wasn't
- 50:30Speaker 1: there for it. And I'm not going to give the name. But...
- 50:36Speaker 1: They were asking something like, again, a classic Poppy question. Like,
- 50:40Speaker 1: who's the first girl, the first time you kissed a
- 50:42Speaker 1: girl or something like this? And his interview never aired.
- 50:45Speaker 1: But the guy was obviously someone who didn't kiss girls.
- 50:50Speaker 1: And he's getting a little tight. And Poppy's, no, no, no,
- 50:55Speaker 1: tell me about this. He's going for it.
- 50:58Speaker 2: I want to know.
- 50:58Speaker 1: And the dude's trying to get out of it. And
- 51:00Speaker 1: they said that the producer was in the office not
- 51:02Speaker 1: really paying attention. And then he got a whiff of
- 51:05Speaker 1: what was going on. Breaks into control room. Abort! Abort mission!
- 51:11Speaker 2: Abandon ship! You can see him diving for the button.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Yes, abandon ship. That is the time Dan kept going
- 51:17Speaker 1: too far with Mike Tyson. I was like, hey, Mike,
- 51:20Speaker 1: appreciate you, big dog. Thanks for coming through, right? Like
- 51:22Speaker 1: sometimes somebody else has got to hit the button.
- 51:25Speaker 2: You might have to run into him.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, hey, I didn't have to do
- 51:28Speaker 1: that twice. Twice with Mike Tyson. Once on the radio,
- 51:31Speaker 1: once on TV, where it was clear that Mike was
- 51:33Speaker 1: not having it. And I was the only, I don't
- 51:36Speaker 1: know why. What was Mike going to do?
- 51:38Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 51:38Speaker 1: But I decided that I was not going to be
- 51:40Speaker 1: a party.
- 51:42Speaker 3: Have you seen this recent Mike Tyson video where he
- 51:46Speaker 3: is surrounded by children and he's taking pictures with them.
- 51:49Speaker 2: And one of the kids starts to throw water in
- 51:51Speaker 2: the air and all shit stops. Mike is like, hey, hey, hey,
- 51:56Speaker 2: no more of that.
- 51:57Speaker 3: And you see 30 children who are probably 12 years
- 52:01Speaker 3: or younger just all stop.
- 52:03Speaker 2: And in the comments, I saw someone said, this.
- 52:06Speaker 3: Is like having a wild tiger at a kindergarten classroom.
- 52:09Speaker 2: Todo es posible.
- 52:12Speaker 1: But now to loop it back to where you brought
- 52:15Speaker 1: up Sammy Sosa. Yeah. Chicago turned their back on Sammy Sosa.
- 52:21Speaker 1: San Francisco did no such thing. That jersey is retired.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Come be a part of the coach.
- 52:33Speaker 1: I mean, he comes back. He gets his standing ovations.
- 52:36Speaker 1: He saved baseball in San Francisco. It was going to
- 52:42Speaker 1: take a lot more than some juice for them. They're like, no,
- 52:46Speaker 1: what juice? No idea what you're talking about. They're going
- 52:49Speaker 1: to build him a stadium? I mean, excuse me, a
- 52:52Speaker 1: statue in front of the stadium? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 52:56Speaker 1: San Francisco was not going to be shamed into turning
- 53:00Speaker 1: their back on him. None of it. Again, what the
- 53:03Speaker 1: Cubs did was so, especially considering how sorry they'd been, Forever.
- 53:08Speaker 1: There was no World Series at that point. When they
- 53:10Speaker 1: went to the playoffs in 98, I want to say
- 53:12Speaker 1: that was the first time they'd been there since 89?
- 53:15Speaker 3: It was the first time they had been there since 89.
- 53:18Speaker 3: And when Dusty arrived, his two years were the first
- 53:21Speaker 3: back-to-back winning years in franchise history.
- 53:29Speaker 2: So if you want to get upset.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Oh, no doubt. No doubt.
- 53:35Speaker 3: Him, Jock Jones, Latroy Hawkins, any brother who wasn't with
- 53:40Speaker 3: the program, hey, you'll be out.
- 53:42Speaker 2: Of there soon. And then, you know, we get this
- 53:44Speaker 2: new version of Cubdom.
- 53:45Speaker 3: But nah, Sammy and Barry and Mark will always live
- 53:49Speaker 3: in my, you know, early professional life because I was 21.
- 53:53Speaker 2: I just started doing this. So like that season in
- 53:57Speaker 2: 01 was like my first little glimpse.
- 53:58Speaker 3: Of, oh, This is what happens when scandal meets greatness
- 54:02Speaker 3: meets America's pastime all at once.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Yeah, but I just love how San Francisco was like, nah.
- 54:07Speaker 2: Nah, we staying down. He with us. You're right.
- 54:10Speaker 1: We staying down.
- 54:12Speaker 2: You kidding me?
- 54:14Speaker 1: We staying down.
- 54:15Speaker 2: We got the 49ers and this group.
- 54:17Speaker 1: You think we going to lose one of them?
- 54:19Speaker 2: Toes down.
- 54:22Speaker 3: Nah, and go out to the bay and talk shit
- 54:24Speaker 3: if you want to and find out you'll get hit
- 54:26Speaker 3: with a block of sourdough fucking around.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Nah, nah.
- 54:31Speaker 1: My favorite random Barry Bonds appearance. I don't know if
- 54:33Speaker 1: you've seen this. So for those who are unfamiliar, there
- 54:37Speaker 1: is a television show on TV one called Unsung. It's
- 54:41Speaker 1: kind of like behind the music for black people. Do
- 54:45Speaker 1: you know what unsung I'm about to talk about?
- 54:47Speaker 3: I don't know which one, but I love, I didn't
- 54:50Speaker 3: know I needed the after seven unsung on a Saturday
- 54:52Speaker 3: at 10 a.m.
- 54:53Speaker 2: In the morning. You know what I mean?
- 54:54Speaker 1: For reasons that I do not understand, Barry Bonds is
- 55:00Speaker 1: in the unsung for Johnny Gill. Barry Bonds, friend. He just,
- 55:06Speaker 1: he apparently, he and Johnny Gill, because I don't know
- 55:10Speaker 1: what music I thought Barry Bonds listened to, but I
- 55:13Speaker 1: didn't really imagine Barry Bonds running the Slow Jams. However,
- 55:16Speaker 1: I really didn't expect him to be listening to the rap,
- 55:18Speaker 1: and I don't think he's out there listening to ACDC,
- 55:20Speaker 1: so the Slow Jams would be what he would listen to.
- 55:23Speaker 1: But yeah, it's Barry Bonds, friend, just in the Johnny
- 55:26Speaker 1: Gill unsung. The Johnny Gill unsung at the end has
- 55:30Speaker 1: a whole section that's about, I mean... Whenever I saw Johnny,
- 55:34Speaker 1: it was always women around. It goes into the whole block.
- 55:41Speaker 1: It's just, I don't know what you heard, but Johnny
- 55:46Speaker 1: was out here making it happen.
- 55:49Speaker 2: And all you had was Poppy on the side.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Yes. What is your romantic side like? Johnny Gill's like,
- 55:56Speaker 1: I'm glad you asked.
- 55:58Speaker 2: I got a long earring, too.
- 55:59Speaker 1: How did we never see no pictures of Johnny Gill
- 56:05Speaker 1: and Barry Bonds? They ain't get out nowhere. Nothing like that.
- 56:07Speaker 1: It's out of nowhere. Barry Bonds. And I want to know,
- 56:11Speaker 1: did Barry Bonds call them? Did they call Barry Bonds?
- 56:13Speaker 1: How did they know this? But that's the last. That's
- 56:15Speaker 1: just Barry Bonds.
- 56:16Speaker 2: He just pulled up.
- 56:17Speaker 3: Hey, hey, before you, let me set the record straight
- 56:19Speaker 3: on my man, Johnny Gill, before y'all go any further.
- 56:23Speaker 2: Where's my seat? This is a man who did not
- 56:26Speaker 2: want to do media, by the way. No, no, no.
- 56:28Speaker 1: He's like, all these guys, they finally do a media
- 56:30Speaker 1: now that, you know, they got to do it every day. Right, right.
- 56:34Speaker 3: And most of the people who covered them have died.
- 56:36Speaker 1: That is correct.
- 56:37Speaker 3: Like a lot of these old baseball cats are no
- 56:40Speaker 3: longer with us. So he can peek his head out
- 56:42Speaker 3: every once in a while. They have that Marlins run
- 56:44Speaker 3: where he's the hidden coach where everybody blames everything on him.
- 56:46Speaker 1: It was hitting home runs and batting practice.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Yeah, nah, he going to always be that dude, man.
- 56:52Speaker 3: It's the greatest athlete that we don't talk enough about,
- 56:57Speaker 3: I think, in sports history.
- 56:58Speaker 1: He had a great name, too. Barry Bonds.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Oh, come on, man.
- 57:02Speaker 1: All-time great sports day.
- 57:04Speaker 2: All-time great sports day. Anytime Wesley Snipes can play you
- 57:07Speaker 2: in a movie, you know. That's right.
- 57:09Speaker 1: That was in The Fan.
- 57:10Speaker 2: The Fan. Yeah. They made Benito Santiago look like a hater.
- 57:14Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 57:15Speaker 3: They made him look like Barry Bonds had Benito Santiago
- 57:19Speaker 3: killed in.
- 57:19Speaker 2: The shower in The Fan.
- 57:21Speaker 1: Remember?
- 57:22Speaker 2: Robert De Niro and all that. Yeah.
- 57:24Speaker 1: Also, Wesley Snipes, such a bad athlete that. The white
- 57:28Speaker 1: boys was faster than him in Major League, and they
- 57:30Speaker 1: had to slow all the shots down of him running
- 57:32Speaker 1: because he wasn't actually fast and his character was fast.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Well, all I needed to see was white men can't
- 57:37Speaker 2: jump to be like, oh, okay.
- 57:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:40Speaker 2: Okay. You see Woody Harrelson's jump shot, and you go, okay.
- 57:44Speaker 2: One of these guys hooped.
- 57:47Speaker 1: On that note, that's Jason Goff. Check him out. 312 Sports.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Check him out. Jason Goff, unscripted. My brother, I appreciate you.
- 57:55Speaker 2: Thank you so much, man, as always.
- 57:57Speaker 1: All right, man. And ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much
- 57:59Speaker 1: for joining us here on The Right Time. We do
