- 1:50Speaker 2: Fountain Play Small and Logan at Logan Bank and Trust
- 1:53Speaker 2: for what we're calling the Playback to Logan Elementary Event. Now,
- 1:56Speaker 2: you'll recall a week ago this past Saturday, there was
- 2:00Speaker 2: a fire at Logan Elementary School and the school was
- 2:03Speaker 2: heavily damaged by smoking water. The students are now attending
- 2:07Speaker 2: Logan Middle School, which is what we Loganites call on
- 2:09Speaker 2: the island. But as you may imagine, there was a
- 2:12Speaker 2: lot of damage and a lot of the Some of
- 2:15Speaker 2: it was replaceable items, some things not. I talked to
- 2:17Speaker 2: one lady who had been a teacher there, and she said,
- 2:20Speaker 2: you can't replace some of the items that her students
- 2:23Speaker 2: had given her, the mementos and things of that nature.
- 2:25Speaker 2: But Rob and kwsh are going to try to replace
- 2:27Speaker 2: some things, collecting things like puzzles, indoor gym equipment, et cetera,
- 2:32Speaker 2: et cetera. Robill explained it to you. He's on site
- 2:34Speaker 2: at Logan Bank of Trust at the Fountain Place, Small
- 2:36Speaker 2: Logan started about eighth this morning. He'll be there till noon.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Jason Quintreil and the folks at Union Mission are there too.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Someone would like to make cash donations because the school
- 2:45Speaker 2: cannot accept cash. Jason, folks at Union Mission can again.
- 2:49Speaker 2: We'll check in with Robin about that coming up a
- 2:51Speaker 2: little bit later on plus your calls the text to

- 3:02Speaker 2: to welcome into the show now Dennis Brown. He is
- 3:04Speaker 2: a candidate for Kna County Board of Education and he
- 3:07Speaker 2: joins us now, good morning to welcome to the show.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Good morning to you, Dave Haydo.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I'm fine, Thank you for being so give us your bio.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Tell us all about you.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Well, I'm not exactly from around.
- 3:17Speaker 2: These here parks. I was going to say, my first
- 3:19Speaker 2: time is going to be you ain't from here, not exactly.
- 3:24Speaker 4: England was my place love starting, and I didn't come
- 3:27Speaker 4: over to take back independence. I can assure you I've
- 3:30Speaker 4: been in the States for thirty three years. I'm a
- 3:32Speaker 4: naturalized citizen. I've had four sons, the three step sons
- 3:38Speaker 4: and one son that have gone through the entire learning
- 3:43Speaker 4: gambit of the US system. Most of that time I
- 3:47Speaker 4: spent in Illinois. We moved down here four years ago.
- 3:51Speaker 4: My natural son has been at South Charon High for
- 3:56Speaker 4: the past four years. He leaves off to probably going
- 4:00Speaker 4: to Boston to Berkeley College to play his bass. That's
- 4:04Speaker 4: what he wants to do. But we've had an interesting
- 4:07Speaker 4: time going into the system in West Virginia. In Illinois,
- 4:13Speaker 4: we did actually homeschool him for two and a half years.
- 4:18Speaker 4: He was in the system and the system kept letting
- 4:20Speaker 4: him down, and we thought there was a better way
- 4:24Speaker 4: of doing this, and when COVID came up, it was
- 4:27Speaker 4: an ideal time to take him out and actually teach
- 4:29Speaker 4: him ourselves. And we found that we were actually doing
- 4:33Speaker 4: two years or two semesters of schooling in less than
- 4:38Speaker 4: a year, and it was amazing. He was actually two
- 4:42Speaker 4: years ahead of where he should be when he came
- 4:44Speaker 4: down here. That's actually a problem in some ways, to
- 4:47Speaker 4: be quite honest, and I'll talk about those as we
- 4:49Speaker 4: go on, because it basically less to boredom. He's not
- 4:53Speaker 4: where he needs to be, and I think that the system.
- 4:56Speaker 4: One of the biggest problems the system has at the
- 4:57Speaker 4: moment is student boredom. But anyway, as far as I'm concerned,
- 5:03Speaker 4: I now live here in Knar City with my wife Dawn,
- 5:06Speaker 4: and we've got two dogs, a cat, and some chickens
- 5:10Speaker 4: up on the hills up there.
- 5:11Speaker 2: It's really good.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I built my career in educational software, became a known
- 5:17Speaker 4: as a leader in online and e learning across the Usa,
- 5:20Speaker 4: actually the Middle East, Europe and Africa, spoken at global
- 5:23Speaker 4: conferences and all sorts of things like that around the world. Actually,
- 5:26Speaker 4: I've owned my own school of performing arts and theater,
- 5:30Speaker 4: taught theater for many years, and I have a paper
- 5:33Speaker 4: that was published in two thousand and nine on the
- 5:35Speaker 4: true value of learning. I've done a lot of things
- 5:38Speaker 4: in training. In fact, my last thirty years in industry
- 5:41Speaker 4: has been associated with learning and basically online learning. But
- 5:46Speaker 4: to do that you have to go through the standard
- 5:49Speaker 4: learning to get there. You can't teach a person to
- 5:51Speaker 4: ride a bike on a television screen. It doesn't work.
- 5:56Speaker 4: So that's my basic, my past and where I am
- 5:58Speaker 4: and why I'm here again with.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Dennis Brown, who is running for a Cana County Board
- 6:03Speaker 2: of Education. Dennis, It's it's no secret that some of
- 6:06Speaker 2: the cuts have been made in personnel to some Knaha
- 6:08Speaker 2: County School employees or as a meeting yesterday. We have
- 6:10Speaker 2: it on the website and information about it. Oh, the
- 6:13Speaker 2: last couple of years, consolidations have been a thing here
- 6:16Speaker 2: in Kanahak County. Tough decisions every time, whether it's comes
- 6:19Speaker 2: to the staff or of the school. How would you
- 6:21Speaker 2: handle all that if you were on the board of education.
- 6:25Speaker 4: This goes you have to go back to what the
- 6:27Speaker 4: problems are to solve those problems. The first thing is,
- 6:30Speaker 4: I am totally against closing schools. It does not do
- 6:33Speaker 4: any good to anybody. When you take a school out
- 6:36Speaker 4: of a community, you take the community away from the school.
- 6:39Speaker 4: And if you put that school, those people from that
- 6:40Speaker 4: school in another school, there is friction between those two groups.
- 6:44Speaker 4: It always happens. Oh you're not from around these parts,
- 6:47Speaker 4: is what happens.
- 6:49Speaker 2: So how do you do that?
- 6:51Speaker 4: Well, first of all, tried looking at ways of actually
- 6:54Speaker 4: repurposing the school that's in that area. It may be
- 6:56Speaker 4: taking off half of the school and using other things.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Put a museum there, put the art gallery there, put
- 7:04Speaker 4: something else there. Maybe even put an adult training center there,
- 7:09Speaker 4: an adult training center for parenting. Wouldn't that be a
- 7:11Speaker 4: good idea, because I think that's one of the things
- 7:13Speaker 4: that's missing in West Virginia. West Virginia has major problems
- 7:17Speaker 4: in lack of parents. To be quite honest, there are
- 7:20Speaker 4: I think it must be eighty percent of my son's
- 7:23Speaker 4: colleagues friends have only one family, one parent families, and
- 7:28Speaker 4: a lot of those are just grandparents. Or even great
- 7:30Speaker 4: grandparents we found the other day who are looking after
- 7:33Speaker 4: the children. That's a major issue and we have to
- 7:36Speaker 4: try and help those people to understand what learning is about.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Understand the other thing that The next thing is drugs. Drugs,
- 7:44Speaker 4: as we know, are the worst in the US here
- 7:48Speaker 4: in West Virginia, and we need to have more detection
- 7:52Speaker 4: and enforcement of drugs and stopping them coming into schools.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Even though a school may say we have a one
- 8:01Speaker 4: hundred percent against drugs, when somebody says I've been seeing
- 8:05Speaker 4: someone smoking something in the bathrooms, not much happens about it.
- 8:10Speaker 4: We need to have some even sniffer dogs going into
- 8:12Speaker 4: the place, bringing in dare the drug advisory actually getting
- 8:20Speaker 4: the police to do it's the police that do that,
- 8:22Speaker 4: which is very good. So we need to speak to
- 8:23Speaker 4: the police. There's a lot of things that we can
- 8:25Speaker 4: do that's not being done. If the thing that I
- 8:30Speaker 4: really don't understand is we say we've got a proficiency
- 8:34Speaker 4: in math of twenty five percent, heare that is terrible,
- 8:38Speaker 4: absolutely horrendous. Forty five percent for English we got thirty
- 8:42Speaker 4: five percent. It's just ludicrous. Math at thirty five percent.
- 8:47Speaker 4: We are trying to build our kids up to go
- 8:49Speaker 4: into the big wide world. They need to have proficiency
- 8:52Speaker 4: in all those things. I'm for the three hours, absolutely
- 8:56Speaker 4: one percent for the three hours reading, writing, brithmetic. Get
- 9:00Speaker 4: them to understand that. Teach them differently. Don't teach them knowledge.
- 9:06Speaker 4: They don't need knowledge. What they need to know is
- 9:08Speaker 4: how to get that knowledge. Especially in this day of
- 9:11Speaker 4: computers and so on, they can get knowledge anywhere. And actually,
- 9:15Speaker 4: my son, I have to say, he knows more about
- 9:17Speaker 4: many things than I do. Many people do, but he
- 9:20Speaker 4: is seventeen years old, and I'm not so that the
- 9:23Speaker 4: point is that we have to teach people. Teach the
- 9:26Speaker 4: kids to learn, not teach them the knowledge. Okay, So
- 9:31Speaker 4: all those things add up to how we stop people
- 9:34Speaker 4: leaving the system, people leaving the state, because if we
- 9:39Speaker 4: get the right knowledge in our people, there'll be the
- 9:40Speaker 4: right people to take the positions that are available in
- 9:43Speaker 4: the state and actually attract people to the state, attract
- 9:46Speaker 4: people for our schools. People do go to places for
- 9:50Speaker 4: the school, make the school the best, and you have
- 9:52Speaker 4: people coming in. Once you've got people coming in, you've
- 9:55Speaker 4: now got other things like entrepreneurialship that takes over and
- 9:58Speaker 4: other jobs that start up so many other are the
- 10:02Speaker 4: things that we need to do. I think our job
- 10:04Speaker 4: as the county board is to get our learning to
- 10:07Speaker 4: a point where it's seventy five percent, like they do it.
- 10:10Speaker 4: A couple of the schools in the state actually have
- 10:13Speaker 4: or in the state have absolutely excellent rates seventy five percent.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Why can't they all be at that? That's Wondercky.
- 10:21Speaker 2: You know, we're talking to this brown who's running for
- 10:22Speaker 2: Canan County Board of Education, and you kind of reference
- 10:25Speaker 2: this because of the decision you said you at homeschooled
- 10:27Speaker 2: a child. You know, more and more parents than are
- 10:30Speaker 2: choosing options other than quote unquote traditional public schools, you know,
- 10:34Speaker 2: be at private schools, be it charter schools, as you mentioned, homeschooling.
- 10:39Speaker 2: How can the board address that because regardless of how
- 10:41Speaker 2: you feel, it is a big problem. Well, it's it's
- 10:44Speaker 2: an obstacle to certain things, I'll put it that way,
- 10:46Speaker 2: because you have less and less students, which is why
- 10:49Speaker 2: you see schools closing.
- 10:50Speaker 4: How do you address the hundred percent one hundred percent agree?
- 10:53Speaker 4: Why are they choosing other schools? It's not because they exist.
- 10:57Speaker 4: They're not choosing other schools because they're rich people and
- 11:00Speaker 4: it's not that that's not a reason for them going.
- 11:02Speaker 4: They're choosing other schools because other schools teach them better.
- 11:06Speaker 4: That is the only reason they go to other schools.
- 11:08Speaker 4: There's no other reason. None. The only reason we homeschooled
- 11:12Speaker 4: our son we did not want to be taught online
- 11:17Speaker 4: with the bad online tools that they were using. And
- 11:21Speaker 4: I happen to know a bit about that. So the
- 11:23Speaker 4: fact is we need to get the education up. Forget
- 11:28Speaker 4: about all of the other things of money and so on.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Get the education up and you will have people stay.
- 11:33Speaker 4: In fact, you'll have people do more. You have more
- 11:36Speaker 4: people volunteer. My wife, I've volunteered down at South Charlton.
- 11:40Speaker 4: My wife volunteered her in Illinois. The only volunteer if
- 11:45Speaker 4: you think that there's a reason for doing it, and
- 11:48Speaker 4: the reason for doing it is to add to the
- 11:50Speaker 4: education of your children. So I'm totally very concerned about
- 11:55Speaker 4: the numbers and how we banner headline banner the eye
- 12:00Speaker 4: idea of forty five proficiency in English? Great, where's the
- 12:03Speaker 4: seventy five percent? And that's the thing we've got to do. Now,
- 12:07Speaker 4: that's an education thing. You've got to see what that means.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I'm against teaching toward the standardized test. That's not how
- 12:16Speaker 4: you teach people at all. That's how you teach people
- 12:19Speaker 4: how to take a test. Who cares about that? What
- 12:23Speaker 4: does it do for the kid? What does the child say?
- 12:26Speaker 4: Why am I here? What's the purpose of me learning?
- 12:30Speaker 4: I'm going to be going out and buying vegetables? How
- 12:32Speaker 4: does the standardized test help me do that? I've got
- 12:35Speaker 4: to change a tire on the car? How do I
- 12:37Speaker 4: do that? How does this math help me in my
- 12:41Speaker 4: everyday life?
- 12:43Speaker 2: I could go to.
- 12:45Speaker 4: College and what they teach and actually say, how much
- 12:48Speaker 4: of your college have you used? After college? You might
- 12:52Speaker 4: be better? I don't know you did communications or something
- 12:54Speaker 4: else you're using. It's great, I did computer science, math
- 12:57Speaker 4: and physics. If you used it, But could I say
- 13:02Speaker 4: I remember any of it?
- 13:03Speaker 5: No?
- 13:04Speaker 4: Can I say that it did me any good? No,
- 13:07Speaker 4: didn't do me any good at all. In fact, I
- 13:08Speaker 4: went into online training courses. Where did that come in? Well,
- 13:15Speaker 4: the computer science, I suppose helped, the math sort of
- 13:19Speaker 4: might have helped, and so on. How do we actually
- 13:21Speaker 4: move forward as a job. Bring back such things as mechanics,
- 13:27Speaker 4: mode mechanics, bring back home economics, bring back how do
- 13:31Speaker 4: I balance my checkbook? That sort of stuff. Teach people
- 13:34Speaker 4: what they're going to need when they get out in
- 13:35Speaker 4: the big pie world.
- 13:37Speaker 2: How's the campaign gone so far?
- 13:38Speaker 4: It's actually going really well. I'm actually amazed at the
- 13:42Speaker 4: number of people are coming forward and saying you're the
- 13:44Speaker 4: person for us. And it's only because I'm talking about
- 13:47Speaker 4: the sense of matter of training and learning and not
- 13:50Speaker 4: talking about how we do better in the board. I
- 13:53Speaker 4: don't care about how well the board does. I do
- 13:55Speaker 4: care about how well the board does for the learning,
- 13:59Speaker 4: and that's a thing. So don't bang the drama about
- 14:02Speaker 4: how wonderful things are when you're at such a low
- 14:04Speaker 4: proficiency rate in the most important things that people who
- 14:07Speaker 4: need to know the I've got a few number this week.
- 14:13Speaker 4: I've got four different talking sessions and different companies and
- 14:17Speaker 4: different areas. I'm really pleased to be on your show. Actually,
- 14:22Speaker 4: this is a wonderful place to be, I have to say.
- 14:25Speaker 6: So.
- 14:27Speaker 4: The biggest problem is finance, to be quite honest, If
- 14:29Speaker 4: anything else, I mean that's so, if you've got any
- 14:31Speaker 4: dollars hanging, okay, just thick them out.
- 14:33Speaker 2: This is a radio station. We get in it for
- 14:36Speaker 2: the fun of the T shirt. That's that's why we
- 14:39Speaker 2: do it.
- 14:39Speaker 4: I haven't seen the T shirt yet.
- 14:40Speaker 2: So anyway, well, I've been here six years. I'm waiting
- 14:43Speaker 2: long one. How's that now? I'm kidding. We have one.
- 14:44Speaker 2: We just circulated around. You have a you have a
- 14:47Speaker 2: website or social media.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Which everything associated with me comes under D Brown for
- 14:53Speaker 4: the number four kb oe. Okay, so my website is
- 14:58Speaker 4: at www dot k D Brown four kboe dot com.
- 15:05Speaker 4: It's like, you know, that's that's all you need to
- 15:07Speaker 4: write in. Anything else that's Instagram and Facebook, they all
- 15:11Speaker 4: come under at d Brown four kboe.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Final thirty Dennis, Why should someone vote for you for
- 15:17Speaker 2: knarky Aunty Board of Education?
- 15:19Speaker 4: Because I'm for you. I'm not for anybody else. I'm
- 15:23Speaker 4: for the parents and the children. I want to make
- 15:31Speaker 4: this the best place to go for learning. The West
- 15:35Speaker 4: Virginia people are amazing, but they don't know it. They
- 15:42Speaker 4: don't know it. When Cole was taken away from them,
- 15:47Speaker 4: what did they have left? They have them. They are
- 15:51Speaker 4: the hardiest people.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You got this. I can tell you. I can tell
- 15:55Speaker 2: you're emotional, like I.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Can tell yeah, I'm I'm not emotional.
- 16:00Speaker 2: No, I am it's the light.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Sorry, the lights are too bright in here and they're
- 16:05Speaker 4: doing But basically I am I'm for the people. Call me,
- 16:08Speaker 4: tell me what you want, what you need, I'll be there.
- 16:12Speaker 4: What I can give you is what I can get
- 16:14Speaker 4: from the Canar County Board. Okay, And I am pretty
- 16:19Speaker 4: good in negotiating with people. I've been negotiating for my
- 16:24Speaker 4: entire life. Million dollar contracts is nothing to me. I
- 16:28Speaker 4: am a personal person, believe it or not. I don't
- 16:31Speaker 4: usually burst. I don't usually burst into tears. I'm sorry,
- 16:35Speaker 4: you know.
- 16:37Speaker 2: That's what it is. It's on head, yes, but there
- 16:40Speaker 2: you are.
- 16:40Speaker 4: That's what I'm doing for you.
- 16:42Speaker 2: All Right. We got to wrap it up there, dentist,
- 16:43Speaker 2: I appreciate you being here. Dennis Brown running for Canar
- 16:46Speaker 2: candid Board of Education, appreciate you being here. We'll talk soon.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Thanks a lot, Thank you, sir. All Right, it's nine
- 16:50Speaker 2: twenty four. But Dave Allen showing five ety live is

- 17:11Speaker 8: According to Defeating America, over seven million seniors nationwide were
- 17:15Speaker 8: food insecure in twenty twenty two. West Virginia is no different. Hi,
- 17:19Speaker 8: I'm Jason, President and CEO of Union Mission Ministries. For
- 17:22Speaker 8: one hundred and thirteen years, Union Mission has focused on

- 20:18Speaker 2: are one of our sister stations here in the building
- 20:20Speaker 2: is live on location at Logan Bank and Trust found
- 20:23Speaker 2: to play Small and Logan because, as you know, Logan
- 20:26Speaker 2: Elementary School who told you the story. Logan Elementary School,
- 20:31Speaker 2: which if you're familiar at all with Logan is on
- 20:33Speaker 2: Middleburg Island what we just called the island. Logan High School,
- 20:36Speaker 2: Logan Middle School, and Logan Elementary School all there. A
- 20:38Speaker 2: week ago, this past Saturday, there was a fire at
- 20:42Speaker 2: Logan Elementary School. Luckily no staff was there. It happened
- 20:44Speaker 2: on a Saturday morning, but there was a lot of damage,
- 20:47Speaker 2: a lot of water, a lot of smoke, things of
- 20:48Speaker 2: that nature. So you can imagine what that's like to
- 20:52Speaker 2: try to clean up, and they lost a lot of stuff.
- 20:54Speaker 2: That school itself has been there since I'm going to
- 20:58Speaker 2: guess some time of the nineteen fifties. Talk to one teacher,
- 21:01Speaker 2: as I mentioned at the top of the show, that
- 21:02Speaker 2: had been a teacher there for thirty years, and imagine
- 21:06Speaker 2: imagine what you collect in your office if you've worked
- 21:09Speaker 2: somewhere more than ten years. Okay, now, imagine being a
- 21:13Speaker 2: teacher when at the end of the year, every student
- 21:15Speaker 2: wants to give you something. Well, all that was lost,
- 21:18Speaker 2: that stuff can't be replaced, but what can be replaced
- 21:21Speaker 2: are things like books and puzzles and things of that nature.
- 21:25Speaker 2: They got a lot of damage from what I understand,
- 21:27Speaker 2: to indoor recreational equipment, think about jump ropes and kickballs
- 21:32Speaker 2: and things like that. So Rob's down there at Logan
- 21:35Speaker 2: Bank of Trust, which if you're getting on one nineteen
- 21:39Speaker 2: corrid or g and you're heading down south, you can't
- 21:41Speaker 2: miss it. Before you get well before you get into
- 21:43Speaker 2: the quote unquote city of Logan. It's on the left
- 21:46Speaker 2: hand side of the road if you're heading southbound, you'll
- 21:48Speaker 2: see the big lbn T side. It's in the mall
- 21:50Speaker 2: where Walmart, bob Evans and all the other places are there.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Rob started at eight o'clock this morning down there collecting
- 21:57Speaker 2: these items for the students and staff at Logan Elementary School. Now,
- 22:03Speaker 2: as I mentioned earlier, the school itself is not allowed
- 22:07Speaker 2: to accept cash donations, okay, but Union Mission can. And
- 22:12Speaker 2: you know Jason Quintrell and the folks from Union Mission,
- 22:14Speaker 2: we've had them on from time to time with different
- 22:16Speaker 2: events that they've done. Rob made a simple phone call Adjason,
- 22:19Speaker 2: and I think Jason's comment was when do we leave
- 22:23Speaker 2: and so they started at eight o'clock this morning at
- 22:27Speaker 2: the Logan Bank of Trust location at Fountain Play, Small
- 22:29Speaker 2: in Logan, collecting these items. And the great thing about
- 22:33Speaker 2: being able to accept cash. We don't touch the cash. Okay,
- 22:37Speaker 2: folks with the school system, don't touch the cash. Jason
- 22:40Speaker 2: Quintrell gets the cash, he's got the buying power. He
- 22:43Speaker 2: can go over and there there's a Walmart there, there's
- 22:45Speaker 2: a dollar Tree there, there's all these different stores that
- 22:48Speaker 2: are there. They can go directly over there and buy
- 22:50Speaker 2: some of this stuff, or if folks are down in
- 22:53Speaker 2: that area none, We have a lot of listeners down
- 22:55Speaker 2: in that area. If you want to go to those
- 22:56Speaker 2: places and buy those things, you certainly can and just
- 23:01Speaker 2: drop them off. And if you can't make it down there,
- 23:03Speaker 2: you can drop off items here at our studio eleven
- 23:06Speaker 2: eleven Virginia Street East and Charleston and will make sure
- 23:08Speaker 2: that they get And we had several folks that drop
- 23:10Speaker 2: by some items yesterday. We appreciated. And again, you know,
- 23:14Speaker 2: primarily what we are looking for are are things like
- 23:19Speaker 2: as I said, puzzles, jump ropes, books, you know, just
- 23:25Speaker 2: just easily easy things and things you don't have to
- 23:28Speaker 2: spend a whole lot of money on. So Rob's down there,
- 23:31Speaker 2: we're going to attempt to check in with Rob. He's
- 23:33Speaker 2: actually on the air a Superstar Country ninety six one
- 23:37Speaker 2: kws right now, so we're going to kind of get
- 23:39Speaker 2: him in between breaks from there. Big shout out though
- 23:42Speaker 2: to the folks at Logan Bank and Trust for making
- 23:44Speaker 2: this possible, because when one of our staff members came
- 23:48Speaker 2: up with this idea, we just simply put a phone
- 23:50Speaker 2: call into my old buddy Gary Wilson of Logan Bank
- 23:54Speaker 2: and Trust and he said, look, we're in. And so
- 23:57Speaker 2: a big shout out to them in Union mission as well.
- 23:59Speaker 2: I understand we have Rob Reel on the line right now,
- 24:02Speaker 2: Sir Roberts, how are things going in La?
- 24:05Speaker 11: Thanks are going very well. I was actually talking with Gary,
- 24:08Speaker 11: which is what happens not paying attention to where the
- 24:11Speaker 11: clock is. So we're here until noon Logan Bank and
- 24:15Speaker 11: Trust Corridor G and we are gathering up these items
- 24:19Speaker 11: for play. We've had some sidewalk chalk, we've had some
- 24:23Speaker 11: sports ball, some building blocks. We're going until noon today.
- 24:26Speaker 11: List is on the ninety six to one KAUS Facebook page.
- 24:29Speaker 11: I know Dave has shared it lots of folks have
- 24:32Speaker 11: been sharing it, and Union Mission is here and this
- 24:35Speaker 11: is something I want to I want to outline. Because
- 24:38Speaker 11: the school can't take direct financial contributions, Jason and Brian
- 24:44Speaker 11: Union Mission, we're quick to step up and say, hey,
- 24:46Speaker 11: we we have a process. We have a safe, secure,
- 24:50Speaker 11: accountable donation process that if folks want to give a
- 24:54Speaker 11: cash or check donation, we can make that part of
- 24:56Speaker 11: our emergency fund and then we will buy things on
- 24:59Speaker 11: the list out of that emergency fund. So your contribution
- 25:03Speaker 11: is still going exactly where you want it to go.
- 25:06Speaker 11: And because you know they have all of the accounting procedures,
- 25:09Speaker 11: you can see you can be certain that that's going
- 25:12Speaker 11: to happen.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And again I want to say a big thank you,
- 25:15Speaker 2: know telling the listeners rob to our friends at Union Mission,
- 25:18Speaker 2: because all we have to do is put a call
- 25:20Speaker 2: or text into Jason Quintrell and he's like we ride
- 25:23Speaker 2: at dawn or something like that. He's ready to go.
- 25:27Speaker 11: It was phenomenal when I called him about as if
- 25:32Speaker 11: he knew what I was calling about, because he started
- 25:35Speaker 11: the conversation with just tell me when and where, and
- 25:38Speaker 11: I hadn't even pitched the idea of what we were.
- 25:41Speaker 9: Going to do.
- 25:42Speaker 11: That's how important this relationship is for us. They are
- 25:45Speaker 11: as committed as we are to helping our friends and neighbors.
- 25:49Speaker 11: They are just as proud to live here too.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Indeed, again we're talking with Rob Real from our sister
- 25:53Speaker 2: station ninety six one Superstar Country KWS. He's on on
- 25:57Speaker 2: the lot right now of Logan Bank and Trust the
- 25:59Speaker 2: Fountain Place all locations. I want to make sure people
- 26:01Speaker 2: realize it's the Fountain Place, small location, because they've got
- 26:03Speaker 2: you know, four or five different branches down there. But
- 26:06Speaker 2: this is this is the one that is on one nineteen.
- 26:09Speaker 2: It's a straight shot from Charleston. If you happen to
- 26:11Speaker 2: be going down that way, looking at forty five minutes,
- 26:13Speaker 2: maybe even forty five minutes to an hour, if you're
- 26:15Speaker 2: Rob Real, twenty minutes, you know to get there in
- 26:19Speaker 2: truck Norris the KWS truck, and they're on site. You have,
- 26:24Speaker 2: as I said, you've got Walmart, you've got Dollar Tree,
- 26:26Speaker 2: you've got Bills, you've got all these different there's twenty
- 26:29Speaker 2: twenty five different businesses there. At found a place small
- 26:32Speaker 2: and I'm sure you could probably find something just about
- 26:35Speaker 2: any of them that would help out. And if you
- 26:36Speaker 2: need helping what to get just stop by talk to Rob,
- 26:39Speaker 2: Gary or Jason. They'll tell you what it is that
- 26:41Speaker 2: we are looking for and you can go over and
- 26:44Speaker 2: get it, or you can just give Jason Quintrail the cash.
- 26:46Speaker 2: And when we reached out to a couple teachers that
- 26:50Speaker 2: and I know that the community not just not just
- 26:53Speaker 2: Logan County, Rob, but surrounding counties. There's schools in Kanaw
- 26:57Speaker 2: County that have reached out down there to Logan Elementary County,
- 27:00Speaker 2: other places Boone County and said what can we do
- 27:02Speaker 2: to help? These teachers and the staff are very very
- 27:04Speaker 2: appreciative because it's what West Virginians do, Rob.
- 27:08Speaker 11: West Virginians take care of West Virginians. And there's I
- 27:10Speaker 11: mean there's a little bit of the butt for the
- 27:12Speaker 11: grace of God go I sort of situation. This could
- 27:14Speaker 11: happen in any sort of community, in any school, and
- 27:18Speaker 11: so we we take care of our friends and neighbors.
- 27:21Speaker 11: There are so many places that you could pick up
- 27:24Speaker 11: something here at Fountain Plaza, or if you're just running
- 27:27Speaker 11: through the bank, we can we can take care of
- 27:30Speaker 11: you that way as well. Maybe this is a good
- 27:32Speaker 11: opportunity how dare I suggest you play hooky as our
- 27:35Speaker 11: friend like Stone is walking up? How dare I suggest
- 27:39Speaker 11: you play hooky? But there are lots of places you
- 27:41Speaker 11: could get coffee and breakfast, and while you're doing that,
- 27:44Speaker 11: you could you could make a donation. Let's get the
- 27:46Speaker 11: play back to Logan Elementary.
- 27:48Speaker 2: That's the whole plan in the game. We've got information
- 27:49Speaker 2: available on the Superstar Country ninety six one KWS Facebook page.
- 27:53Speaker 2: I've got it on Dave Allen Radio. You can go
- 27:55Speaker 2: there and check it out to And I want to
- 27:56Speaker 2: give a big shout out to the folks at Logan
- 27:58Speaker 2: Bank and Truest. I have known Gary Wilson, the guy
- 28:01Speaker 2: you're dealing with there, literally since we were kids. It's
- 28:05Speaker 2: southern West Virginia. My grandparents lived beside his family growing up.
- 28:09Speaker 2: He so Gary and I have known each other for
- 28:11Speaker 2: a long long time. And I'll say this about Logan
- 28:14Speaker 2: Bank of Trust. I opened up my first account at
- 28:15Speaker 2: Loganbank of Trust when I got my first paycheck when
- 28:18Speaker 2: I was seventeen years old. I went straight to Eddie Canterbury,
- 28:22Speaker 2: then president of Logan Bank of Trust, and open up
- 28:25Speaker 2: my account and I have continued to do business with
- 28:27Speaker 2: them this day. They are fantastic people, locally owned and
- 28:30Speaker 2: operated and they just jump right in and help out
- 28:33Speaker 2: with not just this rob but anything they can. They're
- 28:36Speaker 2: all about community down there.
- 28:38Speaker 11: Well, and Gary is the pride of man. And you
- 28:40Speaker 11: two have known each other so long. You've known each
- 28:42Speaker 11: too when man was still called boy. That's how long
- 28:45Speaker 11: you two have known one another. And it's those kinds
- 28:48Speaker 11: of relationships. I've lived literally all over the world, folks,
- 28:52Speaker 11: and there is nothing like the way West Virginians take
- 28:54Speaker 11: care of West Virginians.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Yep, You're absolutely right. And if look, if people want
- 28:58Speaker 2: to drop off things here at our studios, if it's
- 28:59Speaker 2: more convenient eleven eleven Virginia Streets and Charleston, Tracy would
- 29:04Speaker 2: be glad to accept those. And we'll get him down
- 29:07Speaker 2: through Jason. We'll get him through Tiffany and through Hillary
- 29:09Speaker 2: and all the folks that at the school down there.
- 29:11Speaker 2: All Right, the question I got asking, I know you're
- 29:13Speaker 2: gonna go back on the air, so I'm gonna let
- 29:14Speaker 2: I'm gonna let you go is if you heard any
- 29:16Speaker 2: good Dave Allen stories while you're down there.
- 29:20Speaker 11: Well, I've heard some interesting day.
- 29:22Speaker 2: All Right, we'll leave it at that and say hello
- 29:25Speaker 2: to my buddy the rock, Mike Stone. Okay, absolutely, all right, Rob,
- 29:30Speaker 2: appreciate it man, we'll talk soon. Thanks a lot, Thank you,
- 29:33Speaker 2: Rob Real from our sister station ninety six to one KWS.
- 29:36Speaker 2: And again he's posted up at the Fountain Place, small
- 29:39Speaker 2: location of Logan Bank and Trust. And basically, if you
- 29:41Speaker 2: joined us late, what happened was a week Aldgo Saturday,
- 29:44Speaker 2: there was a fire at Logan Elementary School and a
- 29:48Speaker 2: lot of things. The building was not a total loss,
- 29:50Speaker 2: it's a total loss.
- 29:51Speaker 7: For this year.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Those kids aren't gonna be going back, probably till the fall.
- 29:54Speaker 2: So they've made room for them at Logan Middle School,
- 29:57Speaker 2: which is in the same basic location. If you're familiar
- 29:59Speaker 2: with Logan and at all, it's on Middleburg Island, next
- 30:02Speaker 2: to the high school. Got the three schools there on
- 30:04Speaker 2: the island, and they're transferring the kids from the elementary
- 30:07Speaker 2: school over to the middle school. And they just lost
- 30:11Speaker 2: so many things there, and again many of them can't
- 30:14Speaker 2: be replaced. Okay, I completely understand that, but we're doing
- 30:17Speaker 2: what we can't. Puzzles, jump ropes. We had a request
- 30:21Speaker 2: from mister potato Heads. All right, mister potato heads. Old
- 30:24Speaker 2: people like me are still a thing, and they teach
- 30:27Speaker 2: motor skills and things the other things that I don't have.
- 30:30Speaker 2: So those sorts of things you can drop those off
- 30:34Speaker 2: as well, and you can do cash if you want. Now,
- 30:37Speaker 2: if you can't make it down there and you want
- 30:39Speaker 2: to do cash, you can go to the website we
- 30:43Speaker 2: feed people dot org and that's the website of Union
- 30:46Speaker 2: Mission and you can do your donations there. Again, the
- 30:49Speaker 2: folks at the elementary school cannot accept cash. That's why
- 30:53Speaker 2: we call it in our Buddy Jason and Union Mission,
- 30:55Speaker 2: because they can and they can go get the things
- 30:58Speaker 2: that the students they're asking. Complete lists available of what
- 31:00Speaker 2: we're looking for. Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and also
- 31:04Speaker 2: the ninety six to one Superstar Country KWS Facebook page
- 31:07Speaker 2: as well. Rob is going to be there until noon
- 31:11Speaker 2: today broadcasting live and Gary Wilson to folks at LBNT
- 31:15Speaker 2: stopped up and said stopped up and said we want
- 31:18Speaker 2: to help as well, So get an opportunity. Either if
- 31:21Speaker 2: you're heading down that way, stop and see Rob. It's
- 31:24Speaker 2: at Fountain Place Mats where Walmart and everything else is
- 31:27Speaker 2: in Logan, or you can drop by items here at
- 31:30Speaker 2: our studios. If you want eleven eleven Virginia s treat
- 31:32Speaker 2: East and Charleston doesn't have to be anything major. A
- 31:34Speaker 2: couple of you know, a basketball would be fine, A nerd,
- 31:37Speaker 2: a couple of nerve footballs, crayons, you know, coloring books,
- 31:41Speaker 2: book just basic basic stuff that kids need, all right,
- 31:44Speaker 2: because they they lost a lot. If you've ever gone
- 31:46Speaker 2: through a fire, you know the damage that comes with
- 31:50Speaker 2: smoking water. And the school is going to be fine,
- 31:53Speaker 2: but it's probably going to be the fall before the
- 31:55Speaker 2: school reopens again. So the kids are taking care of
- 31:57Speaker 2: they're getting their edumacation at the other one of the
- 32:00Speaker 2: other schools there on Middleburg Island. But appreciate greatest listeners
- 32:03Speaker 2: in the world for stepping up. As I said, several
- 32:05Speaker 2: people already stopped by WVRC Media studios here at eleven
- 32:09Speaker 2: eleven Virginia Streats Charleston and so big shout out to
- 32:13Speaker 2: Rob for organizing this thing, and also Gary Wilson and
- 32:16Speaker 2: the fine folks of Logan Bank of Trust, and also
- 32:20Speaker 2: Jason and the folks at Union Mission. Rob will be
- 32:23Speaker 2: there till noon today. But Dave Island Show in five

- 36:57Speaker 2: I got word that the Ladies of the Vulgar Motorcycle

- 37:04Speaker 2: the efforts at Logan Elementary School. Let me read you
- 37:07Speaker 2: the message I got from them late Friday, sent to

- 38:25Speaker 2: So that's the plan anyway. Definitely, though, I will be
- 38:29Speaker 2: back by Friday, and then I'll play the waiting game

- 39:54Speaker 2: coming up at noon today? Can I give Brad mclahanny credit.
- 40:00Speaker 2: I have to do this for coming up with a
- 40:02Speaker 2: headline of the year so far at wv metronews dot
- 40:05Speaker 2: com and this whole machine gun discussion headline from Brad
- 40:11Speaker 2: machine gun legislation rat tat tat its way through the
- 40:15Speaker 2: West Virginia Senate. Oh, Brad. He also goes on to say, quote,
- 40:20Speaker 2: it's a proposal that captured public imagination like a blast
- 40:25Speaker 2: in quotes one of the proponents of that proposed bill,
- 40:28Speaker 2: which and I'm trying to wrap my head around the
- 40:32Speaker 2: whole thing all right. Basically, from what I understand, there
- 40:37Speaker 2: is a law called the Hughes Law, and it has
- 40:40Speaker 2: to do with the regulation of machine guns in West Virginia.
- 40:43Speaker 2: You could have machine guns prior that were made. I
- 40:46Speaker 2: think it was prior to eighteen eighty six, I think,
- 40:48Speaker 2: but not after. And some folks in the legislature are
- 40:51Speaker 2: working with some outside groups to try to make it
- 40:54Speaker 2: so the state police basically would be where the guns
- 41:00Speaker 2: em and eh, going forward. I actually had a gentleman
- 41:03Speaker 2: by the name of Alex Shay who's very involved in
- 41:05Speaker 2: this effort that actually called. We tried to get someone
- 41:08Speaker 2: on to talk about I know the talk line guys
- 41:10Speaker 2: did yesterday too, and Alex just happened to be listening
- 41:13Speaker 2: to Metro News midday during open line West Virginia yesterday
- 41:16Speaker 2: and just called up to talk about him. So I
- 41:18Speaker 2: appreciate him listening because he said he was a fan
- 41:20Speaker 2: of the show, so I appreciate that. So anyway, go
- 41:24Speaker 2: read Brad's story. It breaks it down a whole lot
- 41:27Speaker 2: better than what I could. It's at wv Metronews dot com,

- 45:23Speaker 2: A texture text says the state is living in a
- 45:25Speaker 2: culture war so hard that the legislature trying to retroactively
- 45:29Speaker 2: ban rocky horror shows at Cinema seventh from the nineteen eighties.
- 45:34Speaker 2: It's the text. I don't know whether that is true
- 45:35Speaker 2: or not, but it does.
- 45:39Speaker 16: What is it?
- 45:40Speaker 2: It's the I don't know that it's true, but it
- 45:43Speaker 2: might be kind of a thing. I don't know. But
- 45:47Speaker 2: and look, I've talked to several legislators on the show
- 45:50Speaker 2: over the years, and they have pointed out to me
- 45:53Speaker 2: when I go off on one of my little tangents
- 45:55Speaker 2: about things that we're focusing on under the dumb they said, well,
- 45:57Speaker 2: you know, we can do more than one thing at once,
- 45:59Speaker 2: which is absolutely true, and that's a fair argument. But
- 46:03Speaker 2: now I'm reading about adult cabarets and more stuff with
- 46:09Speaker 2: dressing rooms, which I'm gonna say, it does seem to
- 46:14Speaker 2: me that not all, but some some Republicans seem to
- 46:19Speaker 2: have a strange fascination with locker rooms and dressing rooms.
- 46:24Speaker 2: Just saying stilling it out there. So I hope that
- 46:30Speaker 2: for my friends of a legilature, I hope that while you're,
- 46:33Speaker 2: you know, spending little time at least discussing this. Don't
- 46:35Speaker 2: know whether I've ever actually come to the floor or not,
- 46:37Speaker 2: I hope that you can maybe go down to McDowell

- 46:41Speaker 2: are dealing with these water issues and just say Hey,
- 46:46Speaker 2: we're We're working on drag queens for you. We're working

- 47:16Speaker 2: that yesterday as I was driving into work early laest day.
- 47:19Speaker 2: We when even driving home yesterday evening, the number of
- 47:22Speaker 2: people that pull out in front of people and people
- 47:24Speaker 2: that run red lights is just incredible to me. I
- 47:28Speaker 2: just see it seems like it's getting worse.
- 47:30Speaker 1: I don't.
- 47:30Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe it's just me. Maybe you've noticed
- 47:32Speaker 2: it too, I don't, just things things I noticed real quick.
- 47:37Speaker 2: And then we'll go over to the boys of the
- 47:39Speaker 2: Capital of the Lastnight City Council and of course Mayor
- 47:44Speaker 2: Goodwin kind of gave us a preview on the show yesterday.
- 47:47Speaker 2: They talked about extending the lease with the ballpark and
- 47:51Speaker 2: for the Charleston Dirty Birds, the Charleston the Charleston Professional
- 47:55Speaker 2: Baseball Company, which is the parent company of the Dirty
- 47:58Speaker 2: Birds baseball team. They've basically extended their lease to the
- 48:02Speaker 2: end of this season because the city and I'm sure
- 48:04Speaker 2: the Dirty Birds, having interviewed Andy Shay and Joe Garrett
- 48:06Speaker 2: and others with the Dirty Birds many times, I'm sure
- 48:08Speaker 2: they want to continue to play ball there, so that
- 48:10Speaker 2: least got extended. They got to look at doing some
- 48:14Speaker 2: They got to look at doing some upgrades at the
- 48:15Speaker 2: I mean, you can remember that ballpark's twenty years old, Okay,
- 48:19Speaker 2: so they've got to look at doing some upgrades to
- 48:21Speaker 2: the park. So that was discussed, among other things at
- 48:24Speaker 2: Charleston City Council last night. We got complete stories posted
- 48:26Speaker 2: about it WV Metronews dot com. Tex says Donald is
- 48:30Speaker 2: doing a number on the stock market. I wish I

- 49:34Speaker 16: is actually going to be moving over on the House
- 49:35Speaker 16: side of things. Also, Amy Grady will be stopping by.
- 49:39Speaker 16: The Senate Education Committee Chair Hoppy is in the building today.
- 49:42Speaker 16: He was honored in the House of Delegates prior to
- 49:45Speaker 16: the floor session this.

- 49:54Speaker 16: for a tax cut. So we got a lot to
- 49:57Speaker 16: cover here this morning on the program.
- 49:59Speaker 2: That's kind of cool. Hoppy was given recognition in the house.
- 50:02Speaker 3: Was it the house?
- 50:03Speaker 2: Is what you said?
- 50:04Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 50:04Speaker 16: House of dellic It's got a citation. It's also montague

- 50:21Speaker 2: Wonder what they said about Hoppy. You probably weren't able
- 50:23Speaker 2: to listen to it. I wouldn't imagine you were probably busy.
- 50:26Speaker 16: But uh, they said, please come back and get these
- 50:29Speaker 16: two knuckleheads out of here.
- 50:31Speaker 2: I believe it's what they comes knucklehead number two. I
- 50:33Speaker 2: recognize that.
- 50:34Speaker 16: Lad.
- 50:37Speaker 7: You know, just when I think I'm starting to like
- 50:39Speaker 7: you and I have a report, you go and do
- 50:42Speaker 7: something like that. We have to start all over it.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Well, what we have in common, Meadows, in addition to
- 50:46Speaker 2: our southern West Virginia lineage, is that we both hate

- 51:17Speaker 2: while you're down there, you gotta make it a point
- 51:20Speaker 2: to run to Morrison's and get a hot dog. So
- 51:22Speaker 2: I'm hoping he'll take me up on it. A good
- 51:25Speaker 2: guy would bring a few bank for you. A good
- 51:27Speaker 2: guy of Morrison's hot dogs would bring about twenty back
- 51:29Speaker 2: for us. Because that's like an onion rings and onion rings.
- 51:32Speaker 2: We need to take Wilson down there sometime to Morrison's
- 51:35Speaker 2: and then give him a few a real Southern West
- 51:37Speaker 2: Virginia culinary experience teach you know what.
- 51:40Speaker 7: I got to take him over to East End Pub
- 51:41Speaker 7: for some hot dogs. Oh yeah, done that, I told
- 51:43Speaker 7: him last year. I forgot we got to do that
- 51:45Speaker 7: before sessions out.
