Speaker 3: Adam and Eve Previously in our story, we witnessed the
• 1:53
Speaker 3: creation of the universe. Out of chaos and nothingness, God
• 1:58
Speaker 3: made everything. He spoke light and life into existence. The
• 2:03
Speaker 3: glory of the skies, the galaxies, and the creatures of
• 2:07
Speaker 3: the earth were made by God and declared to be good. Now,
• 2:12
Speaker 3: we will learn more about the creation of man and woman,
• 2:16
Speaker 3: made in the image of God, inspired by the book
• 2:20
  Speaker 3: of Genesis.
• 2:21
Speaker 2: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
• 2:24
Speaker 2: Bible in a Year podcast. In our previous episode, we
• 2:27
Speaker 2: heard about the grand unfolding of God's act of creation,
• 2:31
Speaker 2: night and day, earth, sky and seas, animals, plants, moon
• 2:35
Speaker 2: and stars, and humanity. Today we take a microscope to
• 2:40
Speaker 2: the pinnacle of God's creation, man and woman, His image bearers.
• 2:45
Speaker 2: This is the story of the very first humans. As
• 2:49
Speaker 2: you listen today, pay close attention to how God creates man,
• 2:53
Speaker 2: how he stands apart from the rest of creation. Notice
• 2:57
Speaker 2: the great care God takes not only in forming man,
• 3:01
Speaker 2: but in providing for him in every imaginable way, including
• 3:05
Speaker 2: a suitable companion, one that was perfectly made for him.
• 3:10
Speaker 2: This isn't just the dawn of humanity, but the dawn
• 3:13
Speaker 2: of marriage. Listen for what this passage teaches about the
• 3:16
Speaker 2: design of marriage and the designer of marriage. Finally, you'll
• 3:22
Speaker 2: encounter a choice in today's story, a choice that God
• 3:25
Speaker 2: gives because He is not interested in forced worship, compulsory obedience,
• 3:30
Speaker 2: or artificial, superficial love. This story reveals God's heart to you,
• 3:36
Speaker 2: His care for you, His love for you. It's a
• 3:40
Speaker 2: story about his desire for you to be fulfilled by
• 3:43
Speaker 2: him and in him and for you to choose a
• 3:46
Speaker 2: relationship of trust with him. So come with me and
• 3:50
Speaker 2: let's take a look in Eden at the story of
• 3:53
Speaker 2: Adam and Eve and the perfect garden God gave them.
• 3:59
Speaker 3: The world was new and its refreshing mist was covering
• 4:03
Speaker 3: the land. Streams and rivers flowed from the ground. giving
• 4:07
Speaker 3: life to all plants and living creatures. Among the quiet
• 4:12
Speaker 3: and new earth God was at work. Personally and intricately,
• 4:17
Speaker 3: God formed a man from the dust, as a potter
• 4:20
Speaker 3: does with clay. Then he breathed life into him. God
• 4:25
Speaker 3: named him and knew him. His name was Adam. God
• 4:29
Speaker 3: made a dwelling place for Adam in a garden called Eden,
• 4:34
Speaker 3: He placed Adam there, and it was filled with every
• 4:37
Speaker 3: tree that is pleasant and good for food. In this garden,
• 4:41
Speaker 3: man's relationship with God began, and with that relationship a
• 4:46
Speaker 3: choice of free will. There were two trees in the garden.
• 4:50
Speaker 3: One was the tree of life. The other was the
• 4:54
Speaker 3: tree of knowledge of good and evil. God commissioned Adam, saying,
• 5:00
Speaker 3: You may eat of every tree of the garden. but
• 5:03
Speaker 3: not of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
• 5:06
Speaker 3: For if you do, you shall surely die. This would
• 5:11
Speaker 3: be Adam's choice. For God does not desire relationship without
• 5:16
Speaker 3: free will. Adam was with God in paradise. He dwelt
• 5:21
Speaker 3: in the garden that was filled with all things good.
• 5:24
Speaker 3: Yet there was one thing that was not good. God said,
• 5:28
Speaker 3: It is not good that man should be alone. So
• 5:32
Speaker 3: the Lord caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. God,
• 5:37
Speaker 3: like a silent surgeon, took a rib from Adam's side.
• 5:41
Speaker 3: From this rib he formed a woman and breathed life
• 5:45
Speaker 3: into her. At this moment, Adam's loneliness was quieted and
• 5:50
Speaker 3: his soul and body were satisfied with her. Adam then
• 5:54
Speaker 3: sang to her and the two were married before God.
• 5:58
Speaker 3: To this day, This is why a man will leave
• 6:01
Speaker 3: his family and become united with his wife. They were
• 6:05
Speaker 3: naked and without shame, for there was no evil to
• 6:09
Speaker 3: corrupt the purity of their unity. They made love, ate
• 6:13
Speaker 3: the food in the garden, and cared for the earth
• 6:16
Speaker 3: and its animals. God was in the garden with them,
• 6:20
Speaker 3: and it was still good. Yet there still remained a
• 6:24
Speaker 3: choice to stray, a choice that would alter the course
• 6:28
  Speaker 3: of all creation.
• 6:31
Speaker 2: The dawn of man. This was a different work of creation.
• 6:36
Speaker 2: For all other created things, God merely spoke and things
• 6:39
Speaker 2: that were not suddenly were. But for humanity, it was different.
• 6:44
Speaker 2: God took his own hands in the very dirt he
• 6:47
Speaker 2: had created and formed man in the image of his
• 6:50
Speaker 2: triune self. But he didn't stop there. He didn't just
• 6:54
Speaker 2: fashion man with his hands. He breathed his very breath,
• 6:59
Speaker 2: his breath of life into Adam. Then God created a
• 7:03
Speaker 2: special place, a garden for Adam. Did you notice the
• 7:07
Speaker 2: nature of God's relationship with Adam? This was not a
• 7:10
Speaker 2: created being without choice, without freedom. God created a true
• 7:14
Speaker 2: relationship with Adam, and so he gave mankind a choice.
• 7:19
Speaker 2: Two trees, one full of good and life, the other
• 7:23
Speaker 2: the path to broken relationship and an untimely death. And
• 7:28
Speaker 2: it was in this garden that God and man were
• 7:30
Speaker 2: to live in communion, knowing each other intimately. I imagine
• 7:35
Speaker 2: this garden as the very best of the very best.
• 7:38
Speaker 2: In a perfect creation, this was the most perfect place imaginable,
• 7:42
Speaker 2: where every single need Adam had was met. Every need
• 7:48
Speaker 2: except one, companionship and community. Our triune God knew that
• 7:54
Speaker 2: to truly reflect his nature, this man would need to,
• 7:57
Speaker 2: as he does with the Son and the Spirit, live
• 7:59
Speaker 2: in community. Up to this point, God has said everything
• 8:03
Speaker 2: was good, but looking at the lone man, he said
• 8:06
Speaker 2: it was not good. God created all the animals and
• 8:12
Speaker 2: brought them to Adam, who named each one of them,
• 8:16
Speaker 2: but none were a fitting match. You see, they were
• 8:19
Speaker 2: not part of Adam's own flesh. They were distinctly different.
• 8:23
Speaker 2: That simply would not do. So once again, God set
• 8:27
Speaker 2: to work in creating with his own hands. Genesis 2,
• 8:31
Speaker 2: 22 and 23 records the moment when God gave Adam
• 8:34
Speaker 2: this beautiful gift of a companion. It says, And the
• 8:38
Speaker 2: Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which he
• 8:41
Speaker 2: had taken from the man and brought her to the man.
• 8:44
Speaker 2: Then the man said, At last, this is bone of
• 8:47
Speaker 2: my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be
• 8:51
Speaker 2: called woman because she was taken out of man. God
• 8:55
Speaker 2: gave Adam a helper, a perfect pair to be with
• 8:58
Speaker 2: him for mutual satisfaction. Eve was created from man and
• 9:03
Speaker 2: together they lived in a perfect place, at least for now.
• 9:06
Speaker 2: But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Today's story tells
• 9:09
Speaker 2: us something very important about our need for community and companionship.
• 9:14
Speaker 2: You see, whether you are married or not, God has
• 9:17
Speaker 2: created you to be in communion with others. It is
• 9:21
Speaker 2: not good to be alone. As God's image bearer, just
• 9:25
Speaker 2: like Adam and Eve, you are made to live in community,
• 9:28
Speaker 2: in unity with others just as God Himself exists in unity.
• 9:34
Speaker 2: And the highest expression of this unity is seen nowhere
• 9:37
Speaker 2: better than in the marriage relationship created by God right
• 9:40
Speaker 2: there in the Garden of Eden. Likewise, this story shows
• 9:44
Speaker 2: you that God has given you a choice. Like Adam
• 9:47
Speaker 2: and Eve, you have before you the choice to follow
• 9:50
Speaker 2: God or follow your own desires. It is a choice
• 9:54
Speaker 2: between life eternal and death eternal. And it's the most
• 9:59
Speaker 2: important choice you will ever make. Dear Heavenly Father, just
• 10:04
Speaker 2: as you provided for Adam's every need, you continue to
• 10:08
Speaker 2: do so for us today. You have created us for
• 10:11
Speaker 2: community with others and with yourself, and we thank you
• 10:14
Speaker 2: for that, O Lord. Help us to choose you and
• 10:18
Speaker 2: your ways, God. the way of life everlasting in Jesus Christ. Amen.
