- 0:00Mos your Lombardy and Kane. Dude, do you want to give me that
- 0:09funck now? Gotta have it now? Oh yeah, Mom, give it
- 0:14to me now. Oh come on, Leggy, you do the same thing
- 0:17as Moth. You do the same thing. Gotta have it, Leggy.
- 0:19Oh, give me a little free style, Jeff, little freestyle please,
- 0:25no freestyle it fine. I had to try. Jeff legwallp ESPN that gun
- 0:31with us. Hey, Jeff, can I actually gotcha? Hey? Uh?
- 0:37Of course I did what I always do. I read your stories and
- 0:42I perused through your top one hundred uh carefully. I I really tried to
- 0:47learn as much as I could about different guys, guys that didn't know so
- 0:51on and so forth. But look at you go, big. Jeff Legwall
- 0:55says, oh, we got two wide outs going one and two. Not
- 0:58I'm not saying you're you said they're going there. But you have those two
- 1:00guys as the best players in the draft, which I thought was very interesting.
- 1:04And then brock Bauer is the tight end at number three. Just in
- 1:07terms of who are the best football players, you got two white outs at
- 1:11a tight end. I just I find that to be sort of fascinating going
- 1:14into this thing when all the quarterbacks are getting all the hype. By the
- 1:17way, most his fourth rated player from a Donze but that's right, that's
- 1:21right, the wide out out of Washington. Another offensive player there, well,
- 1:27you know, that would be the story of the round tonight. I
- 1:30predict the record for offensive players in the first round of a draft is nineteen.
- 1:36I think it's been done like three times. But some folks think tonight
- 1:40could see twenty one offensive players in the first round, and that would be
- 1:45you know, again a record by two. And it kind of is an
- 1:48indication of this board and kind of where the league is right now in terms
- 1:53of, you know, everybody wants speed, skill position players on offense.
- 2:00You know, the search for points, you know, always always underway.
- 2:06So I think that is the story of the board. This is a thin
- 2:08draft, you know, from about the late fifth on, but the top
- 2:15part of this the first two days of this draft that the offensive firepower is
- 2:20clearly evident and it's weird. But because of that, the Broncos may have
- 2:27a shot if they're interested at one of the best defensive players on the board
- 2:32tonight. Because of that, Jeffer real quick to follow that up, so
- 2:36that means that teams who are not quarterback needy, they are going to get
- 2:39a player, not only a great player early on, but they're going to
- 2:45get value. According to Jeff Legwald, with a guy going seventh or eighth,
- 2:49that should be two or three. Yeah, and I think most that's
- 2:53always the way in drafts that are this This this draft has a real quarterback
- 2:59friends feel about it. You know, whether you want to argue this quarterback
- 3:04class isn't as good as a lot over the last twenty years, and I
- 3:09would argue that frankly, but for whatever reason, the planets are in alignment
- 3:15this year, and any quarterback heavy draft at the top of the board will
- 3:20cause what you're talking about, really really good players to come down the board
- 3:27and get drafted. You know, a few slots where most teams below where
- 3:31most teams had them graded. And you know, I think brought Bowers could
- 3:36be that kind of player. One of the receivers, one of those top
- 3:38three receivers could be one of those players. I mean, if the quarterbacks
- 3:44honestly go one, two, three, which is a pretty rare thing.
- 3:50I think it's only happened three other times in history, then that pushes those
- 3:55guys down the board. Jeah, from what you know right now, what
- 3:59you've heard, do you think the Broncos state at twelve or do they move
- 4:02down? I think, you know, if you're making the pie chart,
- 4:08I think the biggest place is them staying put at twelve because because moving a
- 4:15you got to have a partner willing to move for a price you can live
- 4:18with. And you know that that the board has to fall where it makes
- 4:25sense. You know they're and I will say, you know, I've been
- 4:28a guy that said, if you're going to trade down all of the blue
- 4:31chip players, and in old time scouting, the blue coded player was the
- 4:39highest rated player. That's multiple pro bowler h And in every draft there's probably
- 4:46eight or nine so called blue players at the top of the board and all
- 4:51those players better be gone if you're trading down because the bron I think the
- 4:57Broncos depth chart really means anybody. They take it twelve as a need player
- 5:03and I don't care what position it is. Well, speaking of positions,
- 5:06your colleague Paul Hembo had this. He calculated from the years two thousand to
- 5:12twenty nineteen, so twenty years worth of the draft. In the first round
- 5:15hem bone, hembo h embom bone. But he calculated a hit or miss.
- 5:24He considered a hit a player that signed a second contract with the team
- 5:28that drafted him. By position, every offensive lineman was over fifty percent center,
- 5:32guard, tackle. The worst position out of all of them was wide
- 5:36receiver. Out of seventy seven that were drafted in that time span the first
- 5:40round, only twenty one of those twenty seven percent signed second contracts. Why
- 5:45is that position so volatile when it comes to that, It's always been that
- 5:48way, Ron Wolfe said twenty five years ago. But there are more misses
- 5:55at wide receiver in the first round than any other position in the draft.
- 5:59And I think so much of it is, you know, who's the quarterback,
- 6:04what offense are they in? What conference do they play in? Like
- 6:09an SCC receiver to me, is a safer bet because he plays far closer
- 6:15to NFL defenses week in week out, NFL players week in week out,
- 6:20than receivers do in the other conferences. I mean, you know, I
- 6:25latched for a long time. PAC twelve receivers are untouched, you know,
- 6:30over and over again, and you know, what are you grading? Then?
- 6:33You know it's like seven on seven, you should catch the ball and
- 6:38run like crazy when you have a room. So I think that's the I
- 6:41think there are far more variables about wide receivers in some ways than a lot
- 6:46of the other positions on offense and in old linemen traditionally over the years have
- 6:51played more games than the other guys do. They don't come out as early
- 6:56sometimes as the skill players, so that when when I go through all the
- 7:00players, I look at the game totals are always higher anecdotally offensive lineman.
- 7:08So there's just more data. So I think more data makes better decisions interesting,
- 7:13you know. And to follow that up, when you have these kind
- 7:15of positions, are you somebody that calculates the the value of positions in the
- 7:23draft, for example like tight end. I know we've been over this with
- 7:27with Brock Bowers, but let me take an out of one. Let's say
- 7:30linebacker. Right, if you can find a guy who you think is a
- 7:32eight year starter at linebacker, do you care at number twelve? I don't,
- 7:39but some people do. I mean, and I think a lot of
- 7:43times there is a monetary component, Like I know gms who will tell you,
- 7:48yeah, Bowers is worth a top ten pick, But if you pay
- 7:54him that way, he's already at the top of the tight end pay scale,
- 7:58you know, coming in as a real key because that payscale for a
- 8:03high draft pick at that position is closer to the payscale of established tight ends
- 8:11than it is at other positions. So some teams make that kind of value
- 8:15judgment too. I mean, what what are you gonna have to pay down
- 8:18the road? You know, I have the luxury of talking about these things
- 8:24in a vacuum. I can just say, you know, I believe a
- 8:28really good player is a really good player, and you should just get as
- 8:31many of those as you can and then take your chances. But inside linebackers
- 8:37certainly is one of those positions now in today's league, with everybody playing nickel,
- 8:43you know those are and it comes and goes as offenses and defenses sort
- 8:48of change the way they play from time to time, certain positions fall in
- 8:54and out. I mean, the nickel corner twenty years ago was a spot
- 8:58player and now the guy's a star. So you got you got to look
- 9:01at that all differently. You know where you're at right now, all right,
- 9:05So let's let's lay it out though. I mean, there's last time
- 9:07we're going to have you. I mean, yeah, you say the biggest
- 9:11slice of the play is the Broncos staying at number twelve, And you mentioned
- 9:15that they could have maybe the best or one of the best defensive players in
- 9:20the entire draft waiting for them, Yet we know they need more jam offensively.
- 9:26What do you say they do? Yeah, give me like a give
- 9:28me like a one through three your top picks for them that could be available.
- 9:33Well, you know, and I'll do that. I'm making the assumption
- 9:35with everybody else that quarterbacks are going one, two, three, and then
- 9:39a fourth quarterback's going somewhere in the top ten. So I'll play along,
- 9:45Okay, even though I don't think this class is worth that, I will
- 9:48play along and believe that's going to happen too. Uh So, I think
- 9:54that leaves them really really good offensive or defensive guys. You know, Dallas
- 10:00Turner your adverse and Terry on Arnold, the corner from Alabama. I think
- 10:05those three would be the best three defensive players on the board at that point.
- 10:11And you know, I just think and Byron Murphy from Texas defensive lineman
- 10:16from Texas is another guy to keep an eye on. I think, but
- 10:20those would be the four best defensive players on the board in my book,
- 10:24if the quarterbacks indeed go. But if one of those top three receivers come
- 10:30through, you've got it. You got to take a long look at that.
- 10:33I mean, that's that's extreme value. But again, I think anyone
- 10:39they take at twelve they need. I think we I think too many people
- 10:43are acting like the Broncos are like one quarterback away from that's all they need.
- 10:48I look at this depth chart and I see a team that would be
- 10:52a disaster for a rookie quarterback. Interesting, Now you make a very valid
- 10:56point. Do you think the addition of one's Zach Wilson, and albeit it's
- 11:01just a flyer, non risk. I don't mind the move whatsoever. But
- 11:05does that maybe delay any shot at a quarterback in this draft or will it
- 11:09affect the quarterback play at all? I don't think it affects if they truly
- 11:16believe one of those mid round guys is a future starter, which they said
- 11:20they said last week there are mid round guys they believe could be starters.
- 11:26If they truly believe that, I think the Zach Wilson acquisition is them saying
- 11:33the quarterback that's available at twelve is not worth the twelfth pick. That's what
- 11:37I think they're saying that in all their mock drafts and scenarios that they've done,
- 11:43they don't have a quarterback left on the board that's worth the twelfth pick.
- 11:48Now, I may be wrong, and that's happened plenty, I know,
- 11:52but I think that's what that acquisition says, because and then it doesn't
- 12:00impact if they really, really truly believe that one of those second, third,
- 12:05fourth round guys could be a future starter. That is Jeff lagwelld ESPN

- 12:15the draft, because it'll make you smarter, it will. Jeff always appreciate.
- 12:18Yeah, I'll tell you. I'll give you. And he's kind of
- 12:20a local guy. But I undervalued Ricky Rosengarden, the tackle from Washington.
- 12:28I think he's got a shot of going late tonight or early tomorrow. He's
- 12:33done a lot of good stuff. Teams have loved him before the draft,
- 12:37So I just throw that out there. Where's he at right now on your
- 12:39list? I had him at like one ten oh, got very close to
- 12:43getting in for me. So I think he's a Day two guy. But
- 12:46I've talked in the last week or so he's been the real flyer or teams.
- 12:52I guess I should say teams weren't revealing how much they liked him until
- 12:56by this week. So he was on yesterday with the Columbus in Company.
- 13:01He was talking because Tyler coached him at Valor, and that kid sounded very
- 13:05impressive. I listened to that whole interview. I was very impressed by him.
- 13:09He's done so well, and Tayler did ask me about him on the
- 13:11show, and that's I've said what I've said. I that's one he should
- 13:15have I probably should have had him for me h in the seventies, but
- 13:20he could go well before that. I'll tell you there are teams that are
- 13:24interested in him well before that. But I had him at one ten.
- 13:26Jeff Legwell ESPN dot Com joins us every week. As appreciate it, Leggy,
- 13:31thank you you've got police. By the way, Roger Rosengarten's father ended
