- 0:28This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:30podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:33tenth annual health IT, digital health, and RCM
- 0:35meeting. I'm currently joined by Tim Callahan, who
- 0:38serves as the CTO at Michigan Medicine.
- 0:40Tim, thanks for being here, and let's have
- 0:42you start off by sharing a little bit
- 0:43more about yourself and your work in the
- 0:45health care space.
- 0:47Yeah. So my name is Tim Callahan.
- 0:49I'm the CTO at Michigan Medicine. Michigan Medicine
- 0:52is the
- 0:54health care system that's attached to the University
- 0:56of Michigan. So it's kind of the health
- 0:58care system,
- 0:59the medical school, and we have two affiliates.
- 1:01So
- 1:02when you look at the totality of the
- 1:04organization,
- 1:05it's a pretty significant
- 1:07significantly sized
- 1:08academic medical center.
- 1:11Wonderful. Well, thank you for being here. And
- 1:13let's start our conversation
- 1:14talking about AI as that's such a hot
- 1:17topic right now in health care. And nearly
- 1:19half of medical practices reported using AI in
- 1:22some capacity in the past year, and it
- 1:24remains a key topic for health IT leaders.
- 1:27So from your perspective, what are the use
- 1:29cases that are making a difference right now,
- 1:31and how are you leveraging them in your
- 1:32organization?
- 1:34Yeah. There's a lot of buzz, and there's
- 1:36a lot of hype around AI. And we're
- 1:39really trying to use it
- 1:41not really as a replacement, a replacement,
- 1:46for clinicians or for staff for that matter,
- 1:49but really to augment,
- 1:51how staff perform,
- 1:53their jobs today. So whether that's using natural
- 1:56language processing,
- 1:57we recently just completed a project with
- 2:00with Microsoft DAX,
- 2:02to where we're doing ambient voice,
- 2:04within our clinical space,
- 2:06and that has provided a great deal of
- 2:08benefit
- 2:09for clinicians
- 2:10in terms of engaging the patients,
- 2:13and and also reducing the amount of time
- 2:15it takes for them to process some of
- 2:17their clinical work. So that has been
- 2:19hugely transformative,
- 2:21and,
- 2:22certainly augments,
- 2:24their work life balance. We've also
- 2:27leveraged and turned on tools with Epic themselves.
- 2:30Our Epic is our electronic health record, and
- 2:33they're beginning to embed AI tools.
- 2:36So things like,
- 2:38message creation,
- 2:40being able to synthesize
- 2:41a message
- 2:43or an in an in message that comes
- 2:45in
- 2:46and how to summarize that and provide a
- 2:49response back to,
- 2:51patients has been super helpful,
- 2:54for those clinicians.
- 2:55So whether we're using those types of tools
- 2:57that are kind of embedded into the products
- 3:00that we have or whether we're creating our
- 3:02own sets of tools, which we're beginning to
- 3:04do a little bit of as well using
- 3:06some predictive analytics and things of that nature.
- 3:09It's it's an exciting time, but we're using
- 3:13it mainly to augment and enhance how we
- 3:15provide care throughout the health care system.
- 3:19And as virtual care expands from AI enabled
- 3:22tools and remote monitoring to broader digital health
- 3:24platforms, introducing new technology does bring challenges.
- 3:28So what advice do you have for leaders
- 3:29navigating everything from governance to patient engagement? And
- 3:32can you share an example of how your
- 3:34organization has balanced innovation with operational constraint?
- 3:38Yeah. I think that's you know, obviously,
- 3:40it's tricky with AI because there's so many
- 3:44ethical considerations,
- 3:45legal considerations,
- 3:47governance considerations
- 3:48that kind of,
- 3:50go into it. I think early on,
- 3:53Michigan Medicine and the University of Michigan at
- 3:55large kinda recognized
- 3:56not only the
- 3:58power that,
- 4:00generative AI could provide, but also,
- 4:03the need to have,
- 4:04proper governance
- 4:06and ethics in place.
- 4:07So we started early in some of those
- 4:10work efforts to really pull together
- 4:13key parts of the organization to kinda weigh
- 4:15in on what those governance rules should be,
- 4:18what the ethics around it should be, how
- 4:21we would use these tools, how we wouldn't
- 4:22use these tools.
- 4:24We wanted to make sure that we're always
- 4:25using, you know, kind of a clinician in
- 4:27the middle
- 4:28or, as I indicated earlier, this augmented
- 4:32enhancement as opposed to a replacement,
- 4:35and as well as getting, you know, patient
- 4:37consent and things of that nature. So I
- 4:39think that's been really important. And as we've
- 4:41gone out with some of these initiatives,
- 4:44we've also started very slow,
- 4:47to make sure that we are optimizing the
- 4:50workflow and and making sure that the operational
- 4:52considerations are taking place, and then we scale.
- 4:55And we've been able to scale very successfully
- 4:58because a lot of that preplanning and prework
- 5:00that we did at the very
- 5:02very beginning of of,
- 5:05of of some of these work efforts.
- 5:07And shifting gears slightly, how are you seeing
- 5:09recent legislation both at the state and federal
- 5:11level affect health care organizations and health IT
- 5:14specifically, and have you adjusted strategies in response?
- 5:18Yeah. So,
- 5:20you know, legislation will continue to evolve. It
- 5:23it always has.
- 5:24So whether that's, you know, the CARES Act
- 5:27that has, you know, kinda mandated and required
- 5:30us to provide,
- 5:31quicker access to patient records
- 5:34or whether it's local registration that has made
- 5:37sure that, you know, we're ensuring
- 5:40patient privacy.
- 5:41We really use those as opportunities
- 5:44to,
- 5:45enhance the delivery of,
- 5:47what we're doing from a from a health
- 5:49care perspective. So,
- 5:51it does enable us to potentially
- 5:54integrate with third party tools,
- 5:56faster, quicker, and easier than before.
- 5:59But we really do use and and pay
- 6:01attention to
- 6:03legislation that's coming down, making sure that we're
- 6:05adhering to them, making sure that, we have
- 6:08good responses to them.
- 6:10But we really do view it as a
- 6:11strengthening mechanism,
- 6:13you know, rather than anything else.
- 6:16And as we wrap up our conversation today,
- 6:18I'd love to know your top piece of
- 6:20advice for health care leaders as they prepare
- 6:22for further advancements in technology and rising demands
- 6:24for care.
- 6:26Yeah. I think the key thing that that
- 6:28rises to mind is focus.
- 6:30You know, I've also had the opportunity to
- 6:32consult for a variety of different health care
- 6:35organizations
- 6:36probably over the last fifteen years of my
- 6:38career.
- 6:39And what I've recognized is every health care
- 6:41organization is kind of on their own journey
- 6:44and on their own maturity level as it
- 6:46relates to different types of technologies.
- 6:49So I think it's important to understand
- 6:51what's the type of technology
- 6:53you wanna get better at, and then how
- 6:56do you focus on making sure that you
- 6:58can execute on that particular,
- 7:01effort. It's hard to do,
- 7:03many, many things at once.
- 7:06So it's really important to focus on whatever
- 7:08it is that the health care organization wants
- 7:11to do. So more recently at Michigan Medicine,
- 7:14we've been super focused
- 7:16really on a couple of different things. We've
- 7:18been focused on how do we migrate and
- 7:20modernize our infrastructure to and leverage public cloud,
- 7:24and that's one of the reasons why I
- 7:25came into the organization.
- 7:27We've also been super focused
- 7:29on the integration and consolidation of some of
- 7:32the affiliates and making sure that we're interoperating
- 7:35with them better, faster, quicker, and easier than
- 7:37we have,
- 7:38in the past. And as you've mentioned and
- 7:40as we've talked about on this podcast,
- 7:42how do we then begin to turn on
- 7:44some of these AI tools? So,
- 7:46it's important to stay focused on those initiatives
- 7:50and not chase shiny objects,
- 7:53and get distracted by all the various things
- 7:56that may be out there.
- 7:57Wonderful. Well, Tim, thanks so much for joining
- 8:00me today on the Becker's health care podcast
- 8:01and sharing your thoughts on these topics. Again,
- 8:04we are live at the tenth annual health
- 8:05IT, digital health, and RCM meeting. Thanks. Yeah.
- 8:08Thanks so much for having me.
