- 0:00Ionized yeast presents lights out. Everybody is later than you think. This is
- 0:22our Joe Bler. Yes, this tonight is not a play of horror.
- 0:26There is no terror in it, only wonder For the day of which we
- 0:30speak was a strange, wonderful day. About it. Warried, you're a
- 0:42warried, you're a paper read all about it, ward express the observation roof
- 0:46going up. You can hear it face front place. If forget all about
- 0:57what's happening outside, newspapers and things, don't let it spoil this. Nothing
- 1:02can spoil being with you. Michael, Sweet, you can't hardly feel the
- 1:06elevator movie. It is moving, Michael, sure, look at the Liot's
- 1:10twenty fifth floor already. It doesn't seem possible. Oh, you're mine too,
- 1:15because we're going so fast. No, it's something about air pressure,
- 1:18you know, like getting on top of a mountain. Gee, look at
- 1:21those lights. We're at the fiftieth floor. At least they say so.
- 1:23It's so scary. I'm wonderful. Just think one hundred and two floors up
- 1:27in the air. I'm this elevator. Mister h You have to changeth at
- 1:32thirty six again? Oh, oh thanks, looky seventieth floor already. Of
- 1:36course, this is one of the longest elevator shops in the wild. Yeah,
- 1:38I should think it is that they're fooling is Yeah, I had.
- 1:42There's an extra paper out that the wars go. Please huh if you don't
- 1:46mind, we don't want to talk about those things. Oh yeah, I
- 1:49don't find you. Wow, fire as we go? Where do we next?
- 1:55Elevator right over there, sir? Thanks, better hold out of my
- 1:57army. Yes. Why does everyone have to talk about the world all the
- 2:01time? Michael, that's just the way it is. I guess. Come
- 2:05ahead, watch your step. I wonder how much you can see off there?
- 2:15Oh, New York. The guide book says, how as we go?
- 2:22Yeah, I mean this is where were eighty four? Mister, take
- 2:24the elevator right over there for the observation rope. Oh thanks, Come on,
- 2:29Michael, we no sooner got in and we got out six floors higher
- 2:31and at least, he says, So, I guess this is the place
- 2:34where we get Oh, come on, evil and never get closer to heaven.
- 2:39Observation roof next up a hundred the second floor. And I used to
- 2:44think that I was getting up high when I climbed the Apple Tree Observation roof
- 2:53hunt the second floor. Gosh, its price is right all right, Eve,
- 2:59this is in the windlow? Will it be all Oh Michael, it's
- 3:02all glassed in. Yeah. Oh, Michael, how wonderful. Michael.
- 3:06Come over here. Look the ocean out there. You can see the Statue
- 3:09of Liberty. Oh, it's wonderful. And you didn't want to come up
- 3:13here. It's like the world right under it. I'm scared a bit,
- 3:15are you? Oh? Why should I be? It's just wonderful. Look
- 3:19over here. Well you quit running around here like a doodle bug over the
- 3:23river. Which one is that? Well, I don't know, Brooklyn or
- 3:24something. Oh, so many buildings. I had no idea New York was
- 3:29so so spread out, so many buildings, so wonderful. Yeah, from
- 3:35up here, what did you see? Michael? I said, it's all
- 3:38wonderful from up here. But get down there, and I thought it's like
- 3:42one of those Hollywood, you know, glamour stars when she gets up in
- 3:45the morning. Michael, what do you know about things like that? I
- 3:49know you're super colossal or something when you wake up. Oh you are.
- 3:53Your eyelash is sort of fluttering, and then you stretch out just like a
- 3:55little pup dog. Like a pup dog, michaels that room. Oh I
- 4:00don't know the words. I just know that I'm glader every minute that you're
- 4:03married me. You married me. I don't argue with your husband. Husband,
- 4:10Eh lips so soft yours hunt glad. No one else's up here,
- 4:18Michael. Two dollars and twenty cents to make love to me or to see
- 4:20the sight I married a beautiful cashiers. You're like, you're going to see
- 4:26me for ninety nine years and maybe this is the last time we'll ever be
- 4:29able to get away from the farm and see New York this way and we
- 4:31Michael, huh, look over there, Hey, how do you like that?
- 4:36Clouds? Where did they come from? Oh? The usual place clouds
- 4:41come from, I suppose, but so quickly or up playing to high look
- 4:44at them coming right at us. It's a strong window, guys. Oh,
- 4:47Michael is so exciting up in the clouds made the order for you and
- 4:50me. Rain there goes the rest of our day. Sure a good thing
- 4:57they got this place last day. Oh e, it's only like me.
- 5:03Oh no, you've been in thunderstars before. What is the clouds they're fighting?
- 5:10Huh? Look at them fighting each other? Well, was that any
- 5:14reason to be afraid? Gosh, thunderclouds always sort of boil around like armies
- 5:21fighting. Eve, what kind of talk is there? Armies fighting? Why
- 5:32do you keep saying that I can't help it? I keep thinking, we
- 5:35don't think. Remember we said our honeymoon we wouldn't think about anything but us.
- 5:40But this is us. How can I be heavy when all over the
- 5:43world? All right, I will talk about it. I'll talk about it
- 5:51once and for all, and then you and I won't have to talk about
- 5:55it anymore. Gosh, I don't know anything about about those things, and
- 6:00newspapers are always talking about Maybe I'm not so smart as the people who live
- 6:03in this town and all the other big towns when it comes to dodging taxi
- 6:08cabs and throwing wise cracks. But I know this. I don't want to
- 6:13own everything I can get my hands on. And I know that it isn't
- 6:15right for some people to have too much and some people have too little.
- 6:19And I know that when I go to fight, I will fight, and
- 6:24it'll be for what I know is right, for the kind of world where
- 6:28all the little people have a chance, no matter what they look like,
- 6:30or what their name is or what their blood is, Because no matter what
- 6:36any little dictator says, people all over the world are just like you and
- 6:42me. All they want and all I want is happy work and someone they
- 6:46care about to work for, and a little time left over and which just
- 6:51to enjoy being alive. I love you, Michael. Let's go down just
- 7:04a minute more. Storm's breaking. Yeah, I guess it is the first
- 7:12time in my life I ever talked like that. You're very good, Michael.
- 7:15I'm not bright, but good, Michael. Look other one. You
- 7:21just can't see anything down there. Yeah, air's full of miss that's why
- 7:27see things, and yet you don't see them. Let's go all right,
- 7:31hold out of my arm. If it's still raining when we get down,
- 7:34we'll take a taxi back to the hotel. Right. I guess this is
- 7:39the button I pressed get the elevator up here. I don't want to bring
- 7:43them up. Gosh, thunderstorms and everything. It's been some experience, hasn't
- 7:47it. Yes. I sure jumped out of my skin when you scream.
- 7:50I mean, when you saw those thunderclouds. I didn't Michael, well,
- 7:54you certainly did kind of. I sure don't know much about it, then
- 8:00I did. I mean you were afraid of the clouds, and then you
- 8:03weren't afraid of the thunder and lightning. Clouds were horrible. Hey, what's
- 8:09the matter with that elevator ring again? That's all I've been doing. Something
- 8:13must be wrong with it. The button. Yeah, no answer, that's
- 8:16plain enough. Don't Oh, we certainly can't walk down. You'll come up
- 8:20for it. Gosh, my thumb's getting sore or punching this thing something.
- 8:24Sure he is out of water. Maybe we had they walked down one hundred
- 8:26and two floors. No, no, I mean just as the next landing
- 8:28where we can get the next elevator. See you stair away? Huh okay,
- 8:33I guess there's nothing else to do about it. Come on, don't
- 8:39walk so fast here. It isn't so bad walking downstairs. You're just well,
- 8:43you take my arm. We go, missus Smith. You know elevators
- 8:48are all right, But me, I'll take the good old fashioned horse step
- 9:01one hundred and fifty fifty one fifty two. Fty, Michael, looks that
- 9:07door s's eighty six. Hello, Loujah, we're here, sure, a
- 9:15heavy door. Alright, Eve, go through, Yes, eh, and
- 9:20I we'll find out what was the matter? Elevators? H Here we are
- 9:26Georgia Rope. Yeah, gosh, we're the elevator man. Maybe we just
- 9:31better wait? Wait, I want to ride? Where are they? Nobody
- 9:35in the hall? Hey, Michael, don't I got to get someone to
- 9:37run the contraptions. Hey, elevator man. No, you won't like it.
- 9:41Gosh, I don't like being stuck up here? Hey? Is there
- 9:43someone here to run these elevators? No one? Now, what'll we do?
- 9:50Well? The last elevator stopped at the eightieth floor, didn't it?
- 9:52You mean walker again? I guess we'll have to Yeah, and what could
- 9:58have happened to him? Hey? Hey, isn't anyone here? He ever?
- 10:09Want to get downstairs? Hey, it's well, there's got to be
- 10:13somebody on this floor. I don't get so excited, Michael. Gosh,
- 10:15there's any floors between us and the street. We can't walk all that way.
- 10:18We'll have to telephone. Yeah, telephone, that's it. I'll call
- 10:22the operator and tell her what's happening. Come on, Michael, await for
- 10:24me. Michael. You can't go in there long. It's a private office,
- 10:28for sure, but they won't mind it. But hey, can you
- 10:31be there? No one here going off with the elevator, man, I'll
- 10:35bet you well. At least they left the telephone. I hope I can
- 10:39dial this thing right here, it says operator Michael. They won't like it
- 10:43at all if they come back in here. In fine, we walked right
- 10:46in with out of it. Gosh, what's the matter the telephone here?
- 10:50Listen? Son? Sort of did I I'll say, here, give it
- 10:56to me. I got to get somebody. Hey, listen, operator,
- 11:01how about answering operator? Operator Michael? Yeah, oh is this a mess?
- 11:09I have to walk down. I guess where is every one in this
- 11:13building? Guys you Michael? Maybe there's been a fire. Yeah, maybe,
- 11:16Michael. Quick, Let's get to the shairway and get out of here.
- 11:18Quick. Michael, howe are we going five or six floors? Are
- 11:30this quote tight to my arm? We have to walk? We have to
- 11:33walk. Yeah, the whole building can't be empty, Michael. I tried
- 11:43every office on that floor. I tell you there was no one. No
- 11:46one. Oh gosh, it's a ascuriest thing. It can't be a fire,
- 12:00Michael, No, it's no smoke or anything. But where is everyone,
- 12:03Michael? Where? I don't know. I don't know, honest,
- 12:18Michael, Honey, I'm as tired of trying to figure it out as I
- 12:22am walking down the whole blasted one hundred and two floors, floor after floor,
- 12:28offices all fixed up as if people were working in them, and and
- 12:31no one there. I give up, I'd say you, Michael. The
- 12:35war huh? I mean the war news. Everybody ran out into the street.
- 12:39No e does that makes sense? A whole skyscraper emptied out just to
- 12:43grab newspaper, Michael, about a war that's all the way over the ocean.
- 12:48Oh, that makes about as little sense as everything else. Well,
- 12:52this is it? Are we? So help me? The main floor all
- 12:56out? Oh gosh, all right, Michael, don't don't sit down,
- 13:01hurry hurry away out of here in the street. Don't you want to know
- 13:03what's happened? Well? Yeah, sure, that door says to the street.
- 13:09Let's go get a wait for me, Michael. You're glad to get
- 13:11out of this place. Come on up we go, yes, Michael,
- 13:20gosh, Oh Michael, it's all right, deary, it's all right,
- 13:26Michael. What's happened? Not a person in the streets. There were so
- 13:35many, yeah, Michael, Michael, listen, I don't hear anything.
- 13:43Listen the wind. Yes, that's it. That's it, only the wind,
- 13:48Michael. Don't you remember ever since we got to New York, all
- 13:50day yesterday, all night, all morning. The noise, Michael, don't
- 13:54you remember the noise? Yes, sir, No, nothing but the wind.
- 13:58What's happened? Why it's so quiet? Now? What are the people?
- 14:03Michael? Tell me? Do you want to rest? No, just
- 14:24keep walking, all right. If we don't need one, Michael, if
- 14:31we only need one person, you don't stop it. Of course we'll meet
- 14:35someone. We've got to. There's millions of people in this town. Millions,
- 14:37I tell you, not a thing, of course. Dog, there's
- 14:41an explanation. I tell you, there's an explanation for everything. Everyone's gone
- 14:45somewhere, that's all gone somewhere. Where are they gone, Michael? Careful
- 14:52automobile standing still like all the rest. Crazy people leave their cars standing right
- 14:58in the middle of the street. But they'll come back. They got you.
- 15:01Millions of people, I tell you, people, Where are you?
- 15:05People? Hey, somebody come out blast here, come out people, people,
- 15:09Stop your people? Where are you empty speople? Feeling them? Ally?
- 15:13People? Oh? Hold me, what's happened to us? What?
- 15:26No? No, I gotta stop asking questions. I gotta keep going.
- 15:33I gotta find someone. They'll tell us they here? What tremble? What
- 15:41is it here? Michael? I just thought, I thought, why all
- 15:46these empty streets? Michael listened to me. What if there is no one
- 15:52else? Huh? What if you and I are the only ones? Lift
- 16:08Michael? Yes, I can't walk another step. All right, we'll rest
- 16:15where anywhere. It doesn't matter much, does he? Old New York sellars?
- 16:21You ought to know that by now. No, do you know where
- 16:25we are? No Broadway Times Square? Well, I give you a Times
- 16:29Square. It's all yours, wedding press, Yeah, yours, shops and
- 16:32big signs, and all the taxi cabs and buses and cars standing around yours
- 16:36yours to have and a loser Bernop. I'm sorry, guess I'm a little
- 16:44goofy. Let's keep going, all right, tired? Yeah, it's going
- 16:55to get dark soon. Yeah, we're here, it's been Nope, how
- 17:02do you know? I tried the light switches all along the way. I
- 17:07won't be afraid in the dark and I guess that's one advantage we've got coming
- 17:11from the country. There'll be people there, won't there, I don't think
- 17:18so why do you say that? Well, and we went to that store
- 17:22before. There were radio sets, battery ones. I tried them. We
- 17:26weren't looking, there was nothing on the air. What does that mean?
- 17:33It means what you said before. Maybe it's true. Where's the only?
- 17:40The only? Yeah, somehow I'm not as frightened as I was. Me
- 17:47neither my head. I'm just all mixed up, that's all. They left
- 17:52the doors open and the automobiles right in the middle of the street, and
- 17:56everything's just as if they stopped right in the middle of what they were doing.
- 18:00Why Why that word's got me busy chasing around in my head millions of
- 18:04people. Where have they disappeared? To it? If we only had some
- 18:07idea, any idea, what's the matter? Why? Good newspaper light at
- 18:14your feet? Huh? Pick it up? The headline or fury rages,
- 18:23Armies march in Europe? Well the headline, well, what is it the
- 18:29same one as this morning? Couldn't that be the answer answer to what?
- 18:33What are you talking about? Why they disappeared? You get hold of yourself.
- 18:38What's a war thousands of miles away got to do with this? It's
- 18:44the same over there. People gone, Yes, let's keep going, No
- 18:48the curb. Let's sit here all right now. You gotta tell me what
- 18:55you started to say. Don't laugh at me when I say it. Just
- 18:59tell me. Maybe God got tired of it. What He's been so patient
- 19:07waiting all these years for people to learn how to live on the earth,
- 19:11so today, well he just got tired and took everybody away. Michael,
- 19:17don't look at me like that is what I said any more crazy than what's
- 19:22happened. Look, this street should be like daylight with electric signs. There
- 19:26should be so many people around us, and automobiles coming and going in a
- 19:32streetcars and a whole city living. But there's nothing, Michael. Who else
- 19:52could have taken them away? Why can't it be true he got so tired
- 19:57of the horrible mess they making of things that he took them away. Yes,
- 20:03that's it he No, I stopped it. No, it's crazy talk.
- 20:07I won't listen crazy because we don't understand. It's impossible. I tell
- 20:10you, why is it impossible? Michael? I don't know very much,
- 20:15but I know this. I've been thinking about it all the time we've been
- 20:18walking. Called the way people got here on Earth, any name you want,
- 20:23But no matter how you see it, when you really think about it,
- 20:26it's all a miracle. Things joining in the empty air and growing,
- 20:33burning and cooling, the animals growing other things that couldn't move, the animals
- 20:37changing for millions of years until there were men. I tell you, it's
- 20:41all crazy and impossible, and yet someone made it happen. So why not
- 20:45this? Yes, if he made men, why couldn't he get tired of
- 20:51the way they were doing things and destroy them? I can't believe it's you
- 20:59talking. I think I'm saying the truth. Someone made mankind, and that's
- 21:06someone just destroyed them. And what are we doing here? We're flesh and
- 21:11blood like the rest. Maybe he just forgot us, or maybe why it
- 21:19doesn't matter. Tell me maybe you and I, Well, maybe he wanted
- 21:26just a couple of people to start over with. You say crazy things,
- 21:33and then you say crazy. What if it's true, Michael? Think what
- 21:37if it's true? The things you said up on the roof during the storm,
- 21:41those good things, Maybe he heard them and liked them. Getting so
- 21:45dark? Maybe he heard them and liked them. I'm alway tired. Let's
- 21:52find a place to sleep, all right, I'll help you. Where'll we
- 21:59go? Any place where? We can go? Any place? Now?
- 22:03Yes, let's hurry. They'll be terrible in the streets when it's very dark.
- 22:11Yes, we'll wait, Michael. Huh, why should we hurry and
- 22:15be afraid? Who can harm us? Now? You're right, Oliver,
- 22:21the harm is out of the city now, Michael, you don't quite believe
- 22:25all the things I said before. But tomorrow, when the sun is shining
- 22:29again, and we really know that this happened and isn't kind of a dream,
- 22:34you will believe then, won't you. Michael? Maybe you're thinking something.
- 22:41Tell me what. Well, if what you think did happen, maybe
- 22:48maybe he left a few more people like us at different places on the earth,
- 22:52I mean, plain ordinary people to join together and make a new world.
- 22:57We'll have to help run things, Michael. Yes, But but if
- 23:03we don't know anything about running a world, You and I we're just you
- 23:08and me? How can we do better than they did? And millions of
- 23:14them? Maybe maybe by remembering something they sort of forgot what it's just too
- 23:25the won to others is they should do unto you, ladies and gentlemen,
- 23:37This is Linda Donell. I speak to you now while your hearts and minds
- 23:42are full of tonight's play, because what I'm about to say to you is
- 23:47close to what you've been hearing. The victories a few days ago sang in
- 23:52the headlines, But today's headlines speak in a deeper voice of reality, a
- 23:56voice which says, more of our men must die before this war is won.
- 24:03If that realistic thought is unpleasant, you and I can do something about
- 24:07it. We can give our men all of the finest war equipment possible when
- 24:12they need it, at the time they need it. And the time has
- 24:17come now, because the attack is now. It's hard to conceive, isn't
- 24:22it, of any decent human being wanting to make profit out of this war.
- 24:27So if there's extra money in your pay envelope, spend it in the
- 24:32only manner that will enable you to face the future with a clear conscience.
- 24:36Put those dollars into war bonds. Back the attack now with your dollars,
- 24:41and when that final victory does come, a part of it will be yours.
- 24:47Thank you, Linda Darnell. Ladies and gentlemen, the makers of ironized
- 24:52Yeast, we're happy to devote their entire commercial time on Tonight's program to the
- 24:56Third War Long Drive in cooperation with the drug, cosmetic and Allied industries.
- 25:02Mister robler Well, first, a word of thanks to Linda Darnell and of
- 25:06course the mercies mckaybridge and Byron Kine for Tonight's beautiful performances. And is later
- 25:38than you think. H
