- 0:24Here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:28Amen. Take your Bibles, open them in
- 0:30an Exodus chapter 32. Exodus chapter 32, we're going
- 0:35to pick up where we left off last time.
- 0:38And the title of our Bible study is Consequences of Sin Linger.
- 0:43Consequences of Sin Linger. Now sometimes God is very, very
- 0:47gracious and the consequences of sin don't linger.
- 0:51You know, the God is just gracious and, and he shows us
- 0:55his mercy and his grace and he shows favor.
- 0:59But many times the consequences of sin will linger.
- 1:03And we learned last time how impatience will often lead to
- 1:06compromise and sin, that inability on our part to wait on
- 1:12the Lord, and how careful we need to be when waiting on the
- 1:16Lord. Because difficulties in our
- 1:18lives often start with what we perceive, what we perceive as a
- 1:23delay from God. Now, whether it is a delay from
- 1:28God or not, we don't know. We perceive it that way because
- 1:32God has his timing and we have our timing.
- 1:37And when those don't match, we do see that as a delay.
- 1:40And we interpret delays often from God, as denials.
- 1:44And when impatience sets in, we jump in with our own ideas, on
- 1:48our own solutions and our own actions, taking things in our
- 1:51own hands. And that's what happens with the
- 1:53children of Israel here. It's exactly what happens.
- 1:56Something good, something great, something grand has just
- 2:00happened. They're not too far.
- 2:02They're not too far ahead, and it hasn't been too long that
- 2:05they were delivered at the Red Sea, that they were taken out of
- 2:09Egypt and God just showing faithfulness after faithfulness
- 2:12after faithfulness. And then there was a seeming
- 2:15pause where Moses goes up to speak with God there for 40
- 2:20days. And somewhere along the way, the
- 2:23people become impatient. And that impatience leads us,
- 2:29leads them, often leads us into the greatest temptation that we
- 2:33face almost every day, and that's to respond in the flesh,
- 2:37to have a response that is based upon my wants, my desires, and
- 2:43not God's. I do believe as we learned, that
- 2:47they did want to obey, that they were committed people, that they
- 2:52had declared their loyalty. For example, in Exodus 24 and
- 2:56verse 7, all that the Lord has said we will do and be obedient
- 3:01were their words, but their weaknesses were exposed.
- 3:06They learned their own weaknesses, their own personal
- 3:10need for God's strength, their powerful enemy that they faced.
- 3:13They learned how important it was to trust in the Lord because
- 3:17they were weak and they did need God and they had a powerful
- 3:21enemy. And this event, as we saw last
- 3:25time, this event will become an epic moment in the history of
- 3:30the children of Israel. It will be 1 as you read through
- 3:33the Bible that's repeated over and over and over and over
- 3:40again. It seems at times that it is
- 3:44repeated just as much as the Exodus event itself.
- 3:50This golden calf, as the Exodus is recounted time and time
- 3:55again. This episode becomes a blot on
- 3:59their record and they'll be reminded about it over and over.
- 4:03One example, Psalm 106 in verse 19 says they made a calf and
- 4:08horeb and worshipped the molded image.
- 4:11Thus they changed their glory into the image of an ox that
- 4:16eats grass. They forgot God their Savior,
- 4:20who had done great things in Egypt.
- 4:23Not just impatience, but forgetfulness.
- 4:26But let's pick up in verse 11 of Exodus chapter 32.
- 4:32Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God and said, Lord, why does
- 4:39your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought
- 4:42out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty
- 4:47hand? Why should the Egyptians speak
- 4:49and say, he brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the
- 4:53mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth?
- 4:56Turn from your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to your
- 5:00people. Remember Abraham, Isaac and
- 5:05Israel your servants, to whom you swore by your own self and
- 5:08said to them, I will multiply your descendants as the stars of
- 5:12heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your
- 5:17descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.
- 5:19So the Lord relented from the harm which he had said he would
- 5:23do to his people. This is Moses response back in
- 5:28verse 10, where he says, Now therefore let me alone, that my
- 5:32wrath may burn hot against them, and I may consume them, and I
- 5:36will make of you a great nation. What an offer the children of
- 5:40Israel turn idolatrous with his brother Aaron as a leader and
- 5:44God says, you know what I'm done.
- 5:46I'm done with them. I will wipe them out and make a
- 5:49brand new nation out of you Moses.
- 5:50Now given the right time and the right day, you might say yes to
- 5:54that. So Oh yeah, wipe them all out.
- 5:56Lord, let's do this together. But that would be a prideful
- 5:59response, wouldn't it? Because we are them in many
- 6:04ways. None of us are perfect.
- 6:06And Moses response is no, no, he pleads for them, he intercedes
- 6:11for them. And what God is doing in Moses
- 6:14as a leader is drawing out through these difficulties,
- 6:18prayer and intercession. I love how Moses, his response
- 6:24reveals how he's not really concerned with his own future.
- 6:28He's concerned about the glory and honor of God.
- 6:32He's not concerned about an easy life or an easier life.
- 6:36He's not concerned about getting outside of any of the leadership
- 6:40responsibilities, having to go and correct and instruct and
- 6:43deal with it. He's not concerned with any of
- 6:45those things. He's concerned with the glory of
- 6:47God and the honor of the name of God.
- 6:49He's concerned what people will say if they misinterpret this
- 6:52whole event as God not keeping his promises or God not honoring
- 6:56or God being vengeful and wrathful.
- 7:00Says, Lord, why are you angry with your people?
- 7:03They're not mine, they're yours. I'm just your servant.
- 7:07These are your people, he says in verse 11, your prestige in
- 7:11verse 12. Turn from this, he asks, and
- 7:16what a heart of a pastor, of a leader, of a shepherd, of a mom
- 7:20or a dad interceding for those that have failed.
- 7:25Moses says, man, if you wipe them out, what would the
- 7:27Egyptians think of you? They'll say you don't keep your
- 7:30promises. Remember the servants whom you
- 7:34swore to, you gave your word to, and it says in verse 14.
- 7:38So the Lord relented from the harm which he said he would do
- 7:43to his people. Moses prayer is a very powerful
- 7:46one and it's in this verse here that many people stumble with
- 7:50this word relented. It implies in the English
- 7:53language that God changed his mind.
- 7:56But the real question is, did God really change his mind?
- 7:59Because according to Numbers 23 verse 19 and many other places,
- 8:04the Bible says God is not a man that he should lie, nor a son of
- 8:08man that he should repent. Has he said or will he not do?
- 8:12Or has he spoken and will he not make good?
- 8:16So it leaves us a biblical dilemma that perhaps one of your
- 8:19friends have asked you or will point out.
- 8:21Look at this. The Bible says that God doesn't
- 8:23change. But here's a contradiction
- 8:24because it says He did change. Let's talk about that for a
- 8:27moment so you can understand what's happening here.
- 8:29Number one, if you're taking notes, I want you to understand
- 8:32that this is a form of language to help describe God.
- 8:36It is an anthropomorphic use of language.
- 8:40This is God being described in human terms.
- 8:44And now why would we describe God in human terms?
- 8:47Why? Why would we do that?
- 8:49The reason we would do that is because we have no other terms
- 8:52by which to relate to God. We are humans, so we will see
- 8:56everything through our human language.
- 8:58We are limited by our human language and so we use it to the
- 9:02best of our ability to describe the behaviors of God.
- 9:05This is the only way for a human to describe that which is
- 9:09infinite is to use pictures and phrases that we can understand
- 9:14here. God is not changing His mind.
- 9:16All along He knew exactly what He was going to do.
- 9:20In verse 10, He makes a threat. Again, if somebody wants to
- 9:25bring you to this text and try to tell you there's a
- 9:27contradiction, understand verse 10 is a threat.
- 9:31It is not a decree, it is a statement.
- 9:35It is not a promise. He makes a threat, not a decree
- 9:39to destroy them. And it was through this
- 9:41statement that perked Moses up and got him on his knees to pray
- 9:45for his people. Moses now revealed as an
- 9:48intercessor. Moses now drawing out, being
- 9:52drawn out by God. And who puts this kind of heart
- 9:56in in Moses to pray for his people?
- 9:59God does, He puts a heart in Moses, as we'll see, just the
- 10:03depth of development that God. I'm encouraged.
- 10:07We'll get to there in future studies, but I'm very, very
- 10:09encouraged by the life of Moses because one of the many things
- 10:13that shows us is that God can change a person.
- 10:16God can change a person. I'll just give you a little
- 10:18sneak peek. But you remember we were in, we
- 10:20were introduced to Moses. He had a big heart for God, a
- 10:23desire to serve him, a desire to be a deliverer.
- 10:26But he took things into his own hands when he murdered that
- 10:29Egyptian. And then he spent 40 years on
- 10:31the backside of the desert. And that's one of the many ways
- 10:34that God will use to change you and me is to send us to the
- 10:37desert and have a desert experience, a real dry time
- 10:43isolating us and bringing us to himself.
- 10:47That time in the desert changed his heart, made him an
- 10:50intercessor. The ministry of intercessing.
- 10:53It's kind of become now a ministry or a thing in the
- 10:56church, but it's actually just a word it means to pray for.
- 11:01That's it. It's not a ministry in itself or
- 11:04it's not even a gifting from the Lord.
- 11:06I've been given the gift of intercessory prayer.
- 11:08No, no, you haven't been given the gift of intercessory prayer.
- 11:11You've been told to pray for people and you're obedient.
- 11:15It's not something that some people can do it better than
- 11:17others. We all are intercessors.
- 11:19As you were praying, how many just by way of hands, we're
- 11:21praying for, for Jake, our missionary right now, tonight.
- 11:24How many? How many praying for Jake?
- 11:25All of us, we're better. If you were praying, you were
- 11:27praying those notes, those instructions, and one of them
- 11:30was for Jake. How many were praying for the
- 11:32worship team that were up on that list?
- 11:34Of course, what does that make you, intercessors?
- 11:37You were interceding, standing in the gap, praying on behalf of
- 11:42someone else. So don't allow churches and men,
- 11:45pastors trying to people trying to make that some kind of
- 11:48special ministry where you got a better prayer life than anyone
- 11:51else. We're all intercessors, Amen.
- 11:54Every single one of us are praying for someone.
- 11:56I would even say that a lot of our prayer life is praying for
- 12:00someone else and we actually need to expand it a little bit.
- 12:04There's more to prayer than just praying for someone else, but to
- 12:06pray for someone else is really good.
- 12:08You're an intercessor and he is speaking on behalf of them.
- 12:13He is praying. And if you are the one being
- 12:16prayed for, which is wonderful, we also are the ones praying for
- 12:23others. So for the one being prayed for,
- 12:26for the disobedient, for the rebellious, for the Sinner, God
- 12:29hears those prayers. For the one praying, God shapes
- 12:32your heart. And we're to be praying all
- 12:35throughout the Bible, interceding for our country, for
- 12:38our leaders, for the leaders of our world, on and on a list
- 12:41goes. So it's not a real special
- 12:43ministry that's reserved for a few people.
- 12:46Every believer is an intercessor, and Moses has a
- 12:49deep heart for his people. Verse 15 now, and Moses turned
- 12:53and went down the mountain with the 2 tablets of the testimony
- 12:57that were in his hand. The tablets were written on both
- 13:00sides, on the one side, and on the other they were written.
- 13:04The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the
- 13:08writing of God engraved on on tablets.
- 13:13And Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shout.
- 13:16And he said to Moses, there's noise of war in the camp.
- 13:20But he said it's not the voice of those who shout in victory,
- 13:23nor does the voice of those who cry out in defeat, but it's the
- 13:27voice of those who sing that I hear.
- 13:31We learned in our previous study that they were involved in real
- 13:35sexual perversity around this around this calf.
- 13:40And here you can see it's they're so loud, so involved
- 13:45that it sounds like there's a war going on.
- 13:48Moses is the first man as he comes to respond and to see what
- 13:55a difficulty it was. He says in verse 19 as soon as
- 13:59he had come near the camp that he saw the calf and the dancing
- 14:02that Moses anger became hot and he cast the tablets out of his
- 14:09hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.
- 14:15In a real way, Moses is the first guy to break all 10
- 14:17commandments at once, but he's very angry.
- 14:23This was the man interceding, the man standing, but he sees
- 14:27what's happening and he's very, very angry.
- 14:29You know, the Bible says that there isn't anger without sin.
- 14:33And Moses anger here is at the dishonouring of God.
- 14:39He can't believe it. And as we often say, he was up
- 14:43on the mountaintop. Mountaintops often refer to
- 14:46these beautiful, wonderful experiences that someone has
- 14:50with the Lord. Moses was up on the mountaintop,
- 14:52but he had to come down, didn't he?
- 14:55And what did he come down to but this false worship?
- 14:58They broke the covenant and Moses is in angered, throws down
- 15:03the commandments. It is interesting that earlier
- 15:06Moses is pleading with God about his anger and now he turns and
- 15:12becomes he was pleading with God about his anger, but now he
- 15:15turns around and becomes angry himself.
- 15:18He's at a boiling point of being fed up as a leader.
- 15:21But it also involves anguish and disappointment.
- 15:25Leadership involves all sorts of emotions, all sorts of issues,
- 15:30even in the spiritual realm, let alone your flesh.
- 15:33He had Joshua with him and this was a time of discipleship as
- 15:36Joshua is next to him. And Joshua is the one that says,
- 15:41hey, don't you hear what's happening?
- 15:43And Moses, Oh no, that's not a war going on, that's dancing.
- 15:48Notice what he does in verse 20 and singing.
- 15:50He says, then he took the calf which they have made and he
- 15:53burned it in the fire and grounded into powder, and he
- 15:56scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel to
- 16:00drink it. And Moses said to Aaron, what
- 16:03did this people do to you that you have brought such a great
- 16:07sin upon them? Aaron's a leader here.
- 16:13And Aaron, you, you didn't lead. You didn't lead.
- 16:19And so how do you answer for that, Aaron?
- 16:21That you allowed the people and to help the people bring a great
- 16:25sin upon themselves. And Aaron said, Hey, don't let
- 16:28the anger verse 22 of my Lord become hot.
- 16:31You know, the people that they are set on evil.
- 16:39Listen, you serve in this church.
- 16:42You want to serve in this church.
- 16:44I mean, in any level, this can't be you.
- 16:49You must take responsibility for your own failures.
- 16:56I would say I was about to say the worst thing you can do.
- 16:59There are actually more worse things.
- 17:00But this is a bad thing to do. And that is to blame the people
- 17:05for your sin. Because I want you to remember
- 17:08how they brought everything and they come to Aaron and Aaron had
- 17:12his moment. We are not doing.
- 17:14Are you guys out of your minds? We are not doing that.
- 17:18But instead he's a bring it on. That sounds good to me, for
- 17:22whatever his motives are, Moses, he grinds the calf into powder,
- 17:27makes them drink it, and then confronts Aaron, the leader.
- 17:32If you're taking notes, remember this.
- 17:34With servanthood and leadership comes responsibility and
- 17:37accountability. The leader is living under the
- 17:41banner of accountability. Always, not episodically.
- 17:46We are always accountable to the Lord, but we are also
- 17:50accountable to our leaders as well as being accountable to the
- 17:54people. So here's the thing.
- 17:56If someone comes to you as a servant, as a leader in this
- 17:59church, I'll speak to this church.
- 18:00But of course, if you're leading somewhere else, it's applicable
- 18:03as well. If somebody comes to you and
- 18:05asks you, I want you to help me sin.
- 18:09I'm going to give you the answer up ahead.
- 18:10You ready? I'm going to help you and train
- 18:12you. Everyone will know that are here
- 18:14now and also listening at a later time.
- 18:16Somebody comes to you and says, I want you to help me to sin.
- 18:19Here's what you tell them no. And you might say, are you out
- 18:23of your mind? But you can just say no right
- 18:25away and you can say it in whatever way that's necessary
- 18:29that it will be received. It might be a soft no, it might
- 18:33have to be a hard no, but I'm telling you it better be no.
- 18:38And if by chance it's a yes and you bring sent upon the people
- 18:42because you are a people too, then you need to take
- 18:45responsibility because you serve under the accountability of this
- 18:51church, under my leadership, under our leadership.
- 18:55But more importantly, you have accountability to the Lord.
- 18:58And here's what I found to be true over the years.
- 19:00When you talk about accountability, accountability
- 19:03to the Lord, it's really not taking all that seriously
- 19:06because the Bible says because something's not judged right
- 19:09away. Man is said in his heart fully
- 19:11to do sin because you think you get away with it with the Lord
- 19:15because he's very gracious and very patient.
- 19:18You may find yourself thinking, well, this is the right thing to
- 19:21do. Nothing happened.
- 19:22It's fine. Let them dance, let them go
- 19:24around the calf. It's fine with me.
- 19:26At least they're not on my back anymore.
- 19:29But that attitude is also driven over or spills over into the
- 19:35accountability toward the leaders that God has put in your
- 19:37life. Because a leader's patient with
- 19:39you or because a leader is helping you and discipling you
- 19:43and helping you walk through, you also begin to think, oh,
- 19:46it's not that big a deal, but it's always a big deal.
- 19:50And don't misinterpret patience and kindness and gentleness of
- 19:55the Lord is approval for your sin.
- 19:59It's it's important that we take this seriously.
- 20:05Not only did Aaron send greatly with the calf, but he send even
- 20:11greater by blaming the people. Blaming the people, it's a
- 20:16horrible mistake. Blaming the people for his
- 20:19mistake. He's the leader and he's to take
- 20:23responsibility. He comes up with this lie.
- 20:28It doesn't get any better. Not only does it not take
- 20:31responsibility, not only does he not humble himself, not only
- 20:35does he not seek God's best for his life and for the people, but
- 20:39notice what he says, verse 23. It's not only their fault, but
- 20:42they made him do it. You see that for they said to
- 20:45me, Make us gods that shall go before us.
- 20:48As for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of
- 20:50Egypt, we do not know what's become of him.
- 20:53And I said to them, Whoever has gold, let him break it off.
- 20:56So they gave it to me, and I cast it in the fire, and this
- 20:59calf came out. We're here to serve.
- 21:12We're not here to take advantage.
- 21:16The Lord's putting on your heart, just putting deep inside
- 21:21of you to serve God in the context of this little
- 21:24fellowship here, it's not to take advantage of people.
- 21:29It's not to blame them for mistakes that you made.
- 21:34It's not to harm them or hurt them any more than they would
- 21:37hurt themselves. It's a partial lie, if you will.
- 21:42It's not completely untrue. They did come to Him.
- 21:46They did one. I mean, throwing it in the fire
- 21:48and a calf coming out. I said it's like, OK, Aaron, OK.
- 21:54It's partially true, which is fully a lie.
- 21:58When you choose to give partial truths, then you're completely
- 22:01lying. And understand when you and I
- 22:05choose to give partial truths, we've thought it through.
- 22:10We've determined what part to share, what part not to share.
- 22:13This isn't like an innocent mistake that we make when we
- 22:17craft the narrative and try to jump in and get somebody's ear
- 22:21before they that that's not that's not acceptable before the
- 22:25Lord for anyone, let alone the leaders of God's church.
- 22:31And here he is with a lame excuse, he says in verse 25.
- 22:39Now when Moses saw the people were unrestrained, for Aaron had
- 22:43not restrained them to their shame among their enemies.
- 22:49Then Moses stood in the entrance of the camp and said, Whoever is
- 22:53on the Lord's side, let him come to me.
- 22:55And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together.
- 22:59To him, the people were under restrained and it was a shame to
- 23:04them, a lack of self-discipline, a carefree attitude.
- 23:10We're learning on our weekends, aren't we, about the grace of
- 23:12God and how glorious the grace is and how important it is to
- 23:16live under the grace of God and the freedom of God and all that
- 23:19he's given us in Christ. And that is often misunderstood
- 23:23among some believers in interpreting the grace of God
- 23:26and the freedom of God as license for sin.
- 23:30And the thought usually goes something like this.
- 23:32Well, you know, if God says I can do whatever I want, then I
- 23:35will do whatever I want. And if I happen to sin or
- 23:37anything, I can always come back and I can ask for forgiveness
- 23:40and God will forgive me and he will forgive you.
- 23:42But you have made a great error along the way.
- 23:45And that is understanding the grace of God is permission for
- 23:49sin. Now, it's not new.
- 23:51If you've had that thought and God's been working with you,
- 23:53that's not new. Paul addresses this in Romans.
- 23:56He opens up chapter and he says, shall we continue in sin that
- 24:00grace may abound? Certainly not, Certainly not.
- 24:06Just because more grace comes with more sin doesn't mean the
- 24:09means of grace is to send more. Stay away from sin.
- 24:14It will wreck you and those that love you and close to you and
- 24:18those that look up to you. It was a shame to them.
- 24:22I want you to see that their lack of restraint was a shame.
- 24:26And so Moses calls out, who is ever on the Lord's side?
- 24:30Would you come to me? And I believe this was an
- 24:32opportunity for repentance. Whoever's on the Lord's side,
- 24:36come. Remember what Joshua said in
- 24:37Joshua 24 he says, hey, I don't know, let me just read it to you
- 24:41in verse 15. He says if it seems evil to you
- 24:44to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you
- 24:48will serve, whether the gods which your father serve, which
- 24:50are on the other side of the river, or the gods of the
- 24:53Amorites and the land who you dwell.
- 24:55And then how does he end? But As for me and my house, we
- 24:59will serve the Lord that is on so many, you know, plaques and
- 25:05bumper stickers and shirts. As for me in my house, we serve
- 25:08the Lord, but that comes that that's only a portion of the
- 25:10verse. The verse portion is, hey, if
- 25:13you want to go serve the gods of the Amorites, you want to, you
- 25:16want to be idolatrous, you got to make your mind up.
- 25:19You've got to make that choice. But Joshua, so I've already made
- 25:22it. I've already made that choice.
- 25:24As for me in my house, we're going to serve the Lord.
- 25:27We're going to follow him. Only the Levites, it says,
- 25:32responded to the call. Well notice what happens in
- 25:35verse 27. And he said to them, Thus says
- 25:39the Lord God of Israel, let every man put his sword on his
- 25:42side, go in and out from the entrance to entrance throughout
- 25:45the camp, that every man kill his brother, every man is
- 25:48companion and every man is neighbor.
- 25:51And so sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses,
- 25:54And about 3000 men of the people fell that day.
- 25:58And Moses said, consecrate yourselves today to the Lord,
- 26:01that He may bestow on you a blessing this day for every man,
- 26:05as opposed his son and his brother.
- 26:08That's a tough passage if you read ahead.
- 26:11So the tough one, it's hard to digest.
- 26:16I really don't know how to see it except to say that it was a
- 26:20radical surgery of sin. The chance for repentance came
- 26:28and so many didn't choose it. And the result of unrepentant
- 26:32sin was what? Physical death?
- 26:35It's a pretty radical thing. I remember Jesus in Matthew
- 26:39chapter 5 verse 30. If your right hand causes you to
- 26:42sin, cut it off, cast it from you.
- 26:45Radical surgery. 3000 people died because of this orgy, this
- 26:53false worship. Later in Joshua's day, Aiken and
- 26:58his family would be would be found to experience the same
- 27:05demise. Fast forward into our study in
- 27:08the book of Acts in the early church, what happened with
- 27:11Ananias and Sapphira? They literally lost their lives
- 27:15because of their deceit. I find in the progressive
- 27:19revelation of God that you don't see God doing this very much,
- 27:24but it certainly does happen. Some sense equal death
- 27:29physically. Some mistakes, sinful mistakes
- 27:34can't be recovered from. You'll remember later on in the
- 27:39Corinthian church, some died because they were mishandling
- 27:45communion in their worship of God.
- 27:49I'm grateful for the grace of God.
- 27:50I'm grateful that God extends our lives, but I would say the
- 27:56application is clear for us. We have to be on guard against
- 27:59sin in a culture that doesn't value right and wrong as
- 28:05absolutes. I know a culture does speak to
- 28:09right and wrong, but it's also misapplied, isn't it?
- 28:13If you have money or power or influence, our culture gives a
- 28:20pass to them that they declare wrong for certain people, which
- 28:27wrong for one person is right for another.
- 28:30It's not unlike the time in the book of Judges when everyone was
- 28:34doing that which was right in their own eyes.
- 28:37God doesn't deal that way. God doesn't deal with that.
- 28:40He has absolute truth and it's the power of His Word.
- 28:46We have to take it seriously or we're going to suffer just for
- 28:50ourselves, just for my own life, for your life.
- 28:53We'll suffer if we think sin is not a big deal, if we really,
- 28:58really read in the Bible something that is, hey, stay
- 29:02away from this. And we don't, you know, how can
- 29:06you play with fire and not get burned?
- 29:10How can you be in a place where you're going to dabble gusts to
- 29:12stay away from me because you're, you're going to die.
- 29:15So, oh, no, I won't die, OK. Even the strongest of us, as
- 29:23strong as we may be today in our walk with the Lord, has the
- 29:26potential to be done in by sin. Aaron was the chief priest and
- 29:35he fell big time. In Hebrews chapter 2 and verse
- 29:41one, it says, Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to
- 29:46the things that we have heard, lest we drift away.
- 29:52It's interesting, the Scriptures that God gave to me before the
- 29:55message, the power of God's word.
- 29:57It's the power of salvation, the inspiration of God's word, and
- 30:01how it's profitable for instruction.
- 30:04When when we're told in Hebrews 2 to take the more earnest heed
- 30:08to the things we've heard lest we drift away, what have we
- 30:11heard but the word of God, the power of God, the instruction of
- 30:16God, the correction of God, the help in staying right with God
- 30:20and instruction and righteousness?
- 30:23It's a very difficult day for the children of Israel as lives
- 30:29were lost because of sin. In verse 29 it says, And then
- 30:38Moses said, Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord,
- 30:44that he may bestow on you a blessing this day.
- 30:46For every man has opposed his son and his brother.
- 30:51And it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the
- 30:54people, you have sent a great sin.
- 30:56So now I'll go up to the Lord, perhaps I can make atonement for
- 30:59your sin. The Tabernacle hasn't been built
- 31:02yet, sacrificial systems not in place.
- 31:05Moses returns to the Lord verse 31 and said, oh, these people
- 31:08have sent a great sin and have made for themselves a God of
- 31:12gold. Yet now if you will forgive
- 31:14their sin, but if not, I pray blot me out of your book which
- 31:20you have written. And the Lord said to Moses,
- 31:23Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot him out of my book.
- 31:27Now therefore, go lead the people to the place which I've
- 31:29spoken to you. Behold, my Angel shall go before
- 31:32you nevertheless, And the day that I visit for punishment, I
- 31:36will visit punishment upon them for their sin.
- 31:39So the Lord plagued the people because of what they did with
- 31:42the calf which Aaron made Moses. You have the option to have them
- 31:47wiped out, and now you're praying for them, that you might
- 31:51be blotted out. Just the heart of a shepherd.
- 31:54Moses identifies with his people, with the people of God,
- 31:57and even with their sins, as if to say, God, if you would only
- 32:00forgive them, but I'm a part of them too.
- 32:03So forgive us. And if you won't forgive them,
- 32:05then, then I'll take the penalty.
- 32:08I'll receive it. We see the same thing.
- 32:11Nehemiah prays for we have sinned and he wasn't even a part
- 32:15of it. Daniel prays the same thing,
- 32:17identifying with the people. Paul would say this in Romans
- 32:21Chapter 9, verse 3. For I could wish that I myself
- 32:24were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen,
- 32:28according to the flesh. And you can see those men, those
- 32:31leaders in the church that have made it all about them and all
- 32:34about their ministry and all about they, they aren't walking
- 32:37in the paths of those that have served the Lord before them.
- 32:41That's not, it's not they have sinned.
- 32:44We have sinned. This Is Us.
- 32:45We're all going to go through this together.
- 32:49I often talk about with our team about when sin comes into the
- 32:53church, it hurts us all. It hurts us all.
- 32:56We might be dealing with it individually, helping someone go
- 32:58through it, but how can you not sit down with someone in your
- 33:01office and listen to them describe what led to their
- 33:05marriage failing? How can you not?
- 33:08How can you not feel as you're listening and you're watching
- 33:12and you're hearing the tears? How can you not you step back
- 33:16when you're trying to rescue a marriage.
- 33:17You got two people in your office and they're yelling and
- 33:19screaming into one another and you're like, this cannot be what
- 33:22your wedding day look like. This can't be it.
- 33:26And you're listening to them and and then you, you hear somebody
- 33:29go, you know, I just don't want to serve the Lord.
- 33:30You're I just and you're trying to help disciple them and
- 33:33they're just like a resistant, resistant.
- 33:34How can your heart not break what happened?
- 33:38You started out so well and this is where we are today and
- 33:44identifying remembering that there but what's the phrase
- 33:47there but by the grace of God go I what what makes us think that
- 33:53we wouldn't one day be there if we choose not to abide in
- 33:56Christ, We choose not to press in.
- 33:59We let our guards down. Paul says I'll give up my life
- 34:05if it meant that my fellow Jews would be saved.
- 34:09I'll give up myself. I'll give up all my eternity.
- 34:12That's, that's how much I love this resistant, rebellious
- 34:16people. Where does that come from?
- 34:19But from the Lord. You can't make that up.
- 34:24You, you, you, you and I are incapable of dying to ourselves,
- 34:28to that capacity. That's God enlarging our hearts
- 34:33and helping us to serve. Well, He tells him, go lead
- 34:38them. Verse 34, Go lead them.
- 34:43I'm going to send my Angel before you.
- 34:47But Moses, this is an episode. It's very difficult.
- 34:50It's going to be a blot. You know, we're talking about
- 34:52blotting out of books. It's going to be a blot on the
- 34:54nation's testimony. But here's the bottom line.
- 34:57You need to keep leading them. You need to keep moving forward.
- 35:03Jesus came to erase the blots that we've created, the marks
- 35:07that seem to be repeated over and over against us, even though
- 35:12consequences do linger. God answer, I'm not going to
- 35:16blot. I'm not going to blot you out,
- 35:19Moses. But those that have sent those
- 35:22are the ones that will pay the price.
- 35:25There's forgiveness with the Lord.
- 35:26But I love this in verse 34, Moses with all this episode,
- 35:30it's like the darkest episode in the life of the children of
- 35:33Israel until this point. He says go lead them.
- 35:38Just lead them. Take him and I'm going to send
- 35:40my Angel to help you. You can follow him.
- 35:43A pre Incarnate appearance of Jesus.
- 35:47But there will be a visit. There will be a plague.
- 35:49Verse 35 The people because of what they did with the calf
- 35:54which Aaron had made, sometimes consequences do linger.
- 36:00Sometimes it gets harder before it gets easier.
- 36:03Sometimes it goes deeper before the Lord begins to begin the
- 36:07deliverance. And sure, our failures are be
- 36:13repeated over time. They'll repeat it be repeated by
- 36:18others, they'll be remembered by others.
- 36:23It'll be a blot, it'll be a mark, but you can recover.
- 36:28If we confess our sins, He's faithful and just to forgive us
- 36:32our sins that cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 36:36There may be loss along the way, There may be lingering
- 36:39consequences for sure, but God is faithful to wash it away and
- 36:43to restore to you the joy of your salvation.
- 36:46Jesus Christ has paid the price for all of your sin, and here is
- 36:51forgiveness available through the blood of Jesus Christ.
- 36:56You lose something along the way.
- 36:58You always do. We always lose along the way.
- 37:02But God is a God of the second chance and the third chance, and
- 37:05he's able to do for you what you're incapable of doing for
- 37:08yourself if you just look to him today, just trust him.
- 37:13I get a strong sense too, that tonight's Bible study this
- 37:16moment in time with a moment. You're listening to me.
- 37:19This was a warning sign to someone who is ready to make a
- 37:22decision to sin. I don't mean some little mistake
- 37:26or mishap or a stumble with our mouth that we all do, but a pre
- 37:29planned willful against all warning sin.
- 37:35And today God has warned you. God has warned us.
- 37:41That is not the path to go. Maybe a leader among us like
- 37:44somebody's come to you, help me sin and you're about ready to
- 37:46say yes. Don't you dare do that.
- 37:52Or God's holding you accountable and you refuse to receive the
- 37:55accountability of the Lord. Hey, it's not going to end well.
- 37:59You have a great responsibility, but also great accountability
- 38:02and only grows. Too much is given, much is
- 38:05required. And so, Lord, we just want to
- 38:09live a life as clean as we can. We receive the work of your Holy
- 38:14Spirit in us and we are grateful for your salvation.
- 38:18But we, we truly, I just think of the warnings that are going
- 38:21forth here today. I, I, I, I hear God, your voice
- 38:26in the sanctuary. I hear your voice today as we we
- 38:29just take time to listen that you're talking to your sons and
- 38:33your daughters about taking the right path, the narrow path,
- 38:39confessing their sin, receiving the forgiveness, saying out
- 38:43loud, confessing, agreeing with you God.
- 38:47Not green with the culture and not green with emotions and not
- 38:51green with with how we see something or we have
- 38:54interpreted, but just simply confessing our sin for what it
- 38:58is, not blaming the people, not blaming someone else, but just
- 39:02saying against you and you alone.
- 39:05David said I have sinned and that was the beginning, the
- 39:08turning point in his life. Repentance and godly sorrow and
- 39:15the grace and mercy and forgiveness began to flood his
- 39:18soul. So I pray that over us today,
- 39:21God, that we might receive this as a warning that we might stay
- 39:27usable. Let us learn from Aaron to not
- 39:32make excuses, to not blame others.
- 39:36It's been a problem since the Garden of Eden.
- 39:38But rather, God help us to live up to the high calling in our
- 39:42lives as sons and daughters, servants of the Most High King,
- 39:46leaders, pastors among us, pastors, wives, leaders, wives,
- 39:51all among us. Lord, you've got some level of
- 39:53leadership you've given to us. Single, married, kids, young,
- 39:59old. We are the leaders of our
- 40:02culture. We are the salt and the light.
- 40:06We are your vessel for honor. In a dark and dreary world
- 40:13that's hostile to you and so God speak to us and fill us afresh
- 40:17with your Holy Spirit. Just restart maybe and me
- 40:22refresh. We don't need the 10
- 40:23commandments broken and we don't need to have have.
- 40:27Well, maybe there are some that need their idols ground down,
- 40:29but we don't need to drink them and we certainly don't need to
- 40:37see the judgment and the wrath. I'm grateful that Jesus, you
- 40:43took my judgment upon yourself and that your wrath was fully
- 40:48satisfied by the sin offering of Jesus Christ the innocent. 1
- 40:56Righteous for my own righteousness, forgiveness for
- 41:00my sin, perfection for my imperfection.
- 41:05May we be reminded, God, you take sin seriously.
- 41:08It's so important. Help us, God, empower US,
- 41:12strengthen us. Rescue those that are on the
- 41:14edge, Rescue those that are right there.
- 41:17Lord, bring them back, bring them home.
- 41:21We pray like Moses did in their interceding for the prodigal,
- 41:25for the rebel, for the self justifier, the prideful, the
- 41:31arrogant, the runner, you know the the excuse maker, all of
- 41:36those where we lift them up to you and their seat for them.
- 41:39As our hearts break and we we cry out to you.
- 41:42We have sinned. Lord show mercy on us, show
- 41:46mercy on us. So have your way with us in
- 41:49Jesus name, Amen. We pray that you've been
- 41:54encouraged by this Bible study delivered live from the
