- 0:15Speaker 3: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:21Speaker 4: Welcome back to hour 13 of the Patriots Post Game Show.
- 0:25Speaker 1: If I'm a Seattle fan, I loved your questions.
- 0:26Speaker 5: Who would you rather be this morning? It's a great question.
- 0:29Speaker 5: I don't have an answer for it. That's why I
- 0:31Speaker 5: ignored it.
- 0:31Speaker 6: You were right.
- 0:33Speaker 1: You got it.
- 0:34Speaker 5: You were right.
- 0:36Speaker 7: Paul.
- 0:36Speaker 5: You were right. I was wrong.
- 0:37Speaker 1: You were right.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Guess what?
- 0:40Speaker 8: The team was not prepared, and they weren't focused.
- 0:42Speaker 5: You were right.
- 0:43Speaker 2: No, Paul.
- 0:43Speaker 9: You want to make it about... Okay, great.
- 0:45Speaker 10: No, you were right.
- 0:46Speaker 5: What do you want me to tell you?
- 0:46Speaker 11: You were right.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Week one, and, you know, we just.
- 0:48Speaker 4: You need to have a little bit of, like, I'm
- 0:49Speaker 4: not going to quite jump off the bridge, trade Drake May, and,
- 0:52Speaker 4: you know, go back into a cocoon for the next
- 0:54Speaker 4: seven years.
- 0:54Speaker 10: Hey, guys.
- 0:55Speaker 9: How y'all doing?
- 0:56Speaker 3: All right.
- 0:56Speaker 9: How y'all doing?
- 0:58Speaker 2: Especially the quarterback position. They call it whizzing off, at
- 1:00Speaker 2: least where I come from.
- 1:01Speaker 5: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Presented by Toyota.com.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:08Speaker 12: All right.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Tuesday here at Gillette Stadium.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And boy, we've got some work to do here because things,
- 1:18Speaker 2: you know, a lot of people are really worried. You know,
- 1:21Speaker 2: we're among the 16 teams that didn't start off with
- 1:24Speaker 2: a win. So we've got We've got some work to
- 1:28Speaker 2: do here, but I'm going to tell you right now,
- 1:30Speaker 2: I'm going to make an early prediction. I know we
- 1:32Speaker 2: do our picks on Thursday, but I am so adamant
- 1:36Speaker 2: about my pick this week that I'll give it to
- 1:38Speaker 2: you right now. Pittsburgh going to pay. They're going to
- 1:42Speaker 2: pay for our pain. I'm telling you, it's going to
- 1:47Speaker 2: be a whomping on, hey, listen, I was the only
- 1:50Speaker 2: one to be 100% right on the Patriots last week.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Right? You picked him to lose, but you picked him
- 1:57Speaker 1: with the spread?
- 1:58Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:59Speaker 11: I think I picked the same.
- 2:00Speaker 2: So don't get into the old Homer thing with me
- 2:03Speaker 2: right now.
- 2:04Speaker 7: Well, I picked Seattle to win the game. I think
- 2:06Speaker 7: Evan had Seattle in the Patriots. I had Seattle to cover.
- 2:10Speaker 7: I didn't know the quarterback was going to get hurt,
- 2:12Speaker 7: but I should have because it was the Patriots' plan.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Listen, I have a feeling for the team, as we
- 2:17Speaker 2: all know, and they are going to stomp off.
- 2:20Speaker 1: In fact.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Not that I wish injury on anyone, but I don't
- 2:24Speaker 2: know if Aaron Rodgers.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Is going to finish the game. I thought he looked
- 2:28Speaker 1: pretty good.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Couldn't really throw the ball down the field. Yesterday we
- 2:32Speaker 4: heard Vrabes say that he moved around a little better
- 2:34Speaker 4: than he did last year.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers is Aaron Rodgers, but I'm just telling you,
- 2:40Speaker 2: as a team, we're going to step all over Pittsburgh.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I think they need it, Fred. I think they need it.
- 2:45Speaker 1: You asked me this morning.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I think there's a little bit of a crisis in
- 2:47Speaker 4: confidence because they've, you know, what is this, five straight
- 2:50Speaker 4: games that, you know, it hasn't looked great. It's been
- 2:52Speaker 4: tough sledding. Admittedly against some good teams, most of it
- 2:54Speaker 4: in the playoffs. You play the Super Bowl team twice, but...
- 2:57Speaker 4: I think you need to get back on that. All right,
- 3:00Speaker 4: we believe in Drake May. He looks like an MVP candidate.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Right now it feels like a little bit in the blender.
- 3:06Speaker 13: Yep.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Cover two, playing high, guys, not letting him play the
- 3:09Speaker 4: way he wants to play. Can he learn to take
- 3:12Speaker 4: the easy stuff?
- 3:12Speaker 1: We don't know.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I wasn't on the post-game show. I wasn't here for
- 3:15Speaker 2: Thursday's show. So you tell me, like, is, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 2: your own sentiment and the sentiment of the people. Was
- 3:24Speaker 2: the game a disaster, or were there things to be
- 3:26Speaker 2: taken positively out of the game?
- 3:29Speaker 5: I don't think the game was a disaster.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:31Speaker 7: I thought it was a disappointing result. I think they
- 3:34Speaker 7: had the game.
- 3:35Speaker 5: I.
- 3:37Speaker 7: Was obviously being snarky, but when Darnold goes out, that's
- 3:40Speaker 7: a game you really should win. So now you don't
- 3:43Speaker 7: have to score a lot of points to.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Win the game. I thought they got a little... conservative.
- 3:47Speaker 5: I didn't love the game plan.
- 3:49Speaker 7: I didn't love the fact that they wanted to go
- 3:51Speaker 7: in and, and run so much on early downs, but
- 3:54Speaker 7: you guys did hear from, from Mike and I, I'm
- 3:56Speaker 7: more concerned, uh, are more interested in, in hearing from
- 4:00Speaker 7: Evan and you, because we didn't get you a take. I, I,
- 4:03Speaker 7: I mean, that, that's kind of the way it, I mean,
- 4:05Speaker 7: we all know they lost the, they had a game.
- 4:07Speaker 7: I don't want, I don't want to say the game
- 4:09Speaker 7: was in hand. It was only 10, nothing, but You know,
- 4:12Speaker 7: you turn the ball over three times in a quarter,
- 4:14Speaker 7: you're probably going to lose.
- 4:16Speaker 5: And they lost.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:17Speaker 5: You know, to a really good team on the road,
- 4:18Speaker 5: I don't think it's a disaster. Seattle's, you know.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's kind of how I feel.
- 4:22Speaker 2: That's very good. I'm less like, like, obviously, Darnold goes out,
- 4:27Speaker 2: and you're bringing in Drew Locke, and you're like, oh, okay,
- 4:29Speaker 2: here we go. But then I was thinking about it, like,
- 4:32Speaker 2: toward the second half, and I'm like, you know what?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Going into this game, I wasn't worried about Seattle's offense.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I was worried about Seattle's defense in our offense. And
- 4:42Speaker 2: how are we going to be executed? Are we going
- 4:45Speaker 2: to have a repeat of the Super Bowl? Or this year,
- 4:47Speaker 2: this time around, are we going to be able to
- 4:50Speaker 2: execute our offense better than we did in the Super Bowl?
- 4:53Speaker 2: And so I'm like, okay, so you can say, well,
- 4:58Speaker 2: Darnold goes out. There's no way you should lose. Yes,
- 5:01Speaker 2: there is a way you can lose this game if
- 5:03Speaker 2: you can't operate your offense. I think that, and I
- 5:08Speaker 2: think that was the story. I think the story was
- 5:10Speaker 2: Seattle's defense was, Just shutting us down in the second half.
- 5:15Speaker 2: So even though we only let up 13 points, even
- 5:19Speaker 2: though we only let up 13 points, we couldn't score
- 5:26Speaker 2: in the second half. And I think that was the difference.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And like you said, Paul, you throw three interceptions in
- 5:31Speaker 2: the fourth quarter of a tight game, you're going to lose.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You're going to lose. So that, to me, the story.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And then I think that bleeds into Drake May. We
- 5:42Speaker 2: have to talk about Drake May and what we saw
- 5:46Speaker 2: and what you think that means going forward.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Go ahead, Evan.
- 5:52Speaker 14: I understand that we've been waiting seven months for the
- 5:56Speaker 14: Patriots to play football again.
- 5:57Speaker 11: And this is the.
- 5:58Speaker 14: Game finally rolls around. There's a lot of anticipation and excitement.
- 6:02Speaker 14: The overreaction to them losing one football game has been
- 6:07Speaker 14: classic week one. And I also don't think it helps
- 6:09Speaker 14: that they have 11 days off in between games now.
- 6:12Speaker 14: So there's a lot of time to talk about this
- 6:14Speaker 14: game and marinate in this game. I thought this was
- 6:17Speaker 14: a game that they had won for three quarters. And
- 6:20Speaker 14: I actually, I understand some of the criticisms that Paul
- 6:24Speaker 14: brought up about the play calling and about the conservative approach,
- 6:28Speaker 14: if you want to call it that. I thought they
- 6:30Speaker 14: played the game the way they thought they needed to
- 6:32Speaker 14: play it to win the game.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I agree.
- 6:34Speaker 14: And so I thought for three quarters, they did exactly
- 6:37Speaker 14: what they set out to do game plan wise. And
- 6:40Speaker 14: then just calling a spade a spade, Drake May threw
- 6:43Speaker 14: the game away. He threw the game away. He threw
- 6:45Speaker 14: three picks on three consecutive drives, trying to push the
- 6:49Speaker 14: ball down the field, doing exactly what they were telling
- 6:51Speaker 14: him all night not to do, which was just take
- 6:55Speaker 14: the profits, take what the defense has given you, take
- 6:57Speaker 14: the easy money. And he decided to push the ball
- 7:00Speaker 14: down the field, three straight drives, three straight picks.
- 7:04Speaker 11: Seattle wins the game.
- 7:05Speaker 14: If you just stick with the game plan and kept
- 7:07Speaker 14: checking the ball down like he had in the first
- 7:10Speaker 14: three quarters, they win the game.
- 7:11Speaker 2: The one he threw after the Dobbs dropped was a
- 7:14Speaker 2: frustration one. He kind of forced it into three people
- 7:18Speaker 2: because he was still thinking about the drop, I think.
- 7:22Speaker 14: I think he said it himself. He got impatient. I
- 7:25Speaker 14: don't think it's any more than that. I understand everybody's
- 7:28Speaker 14: trying to do an autopsy and figure out all these
- 7:31Speaker 14: different reasons why they lost this game.
- 7:33Speaker 11: They had the game in hand. They had control of
- 7:36Speaker 11: the game.
- 7:37Speaker 14: And they were at the Seattle 45-yard line on second
- 7:40Speaker 14: and nine, and he tries to force the ball into
- 7:42Speaker 14: a tight window down the field against a good defense,
- 7:45Speaker 14: and they pick him off. And the game from that
- 7:48Speaker 14: point on, on the Dobbs pick, just kind of unravels
- 7:50Speaker 14: on him from there. And he has Corey Kiner on
- 7:53Speaker 14: the check down right in the flat for a nice eight,
- 7:57Speaker 14: 10 yard game. Like they've been doing all game long.
- 7:59Speaker 14: And that completely changes the course of the game. Like
- 8:02Speaker 14: if he throws the ball down to the Kiner there,
- 8:04Speaker 14: you know, do they just kick a field goal?
- 8:06Speaker 11: Now it's 13 to three again. And now you got
- 8:08Speaker 11: a 10 point late.
- 8:09Speaker 2: You got your two score game.
- 8:11Speaker 14: So it, I understand, I'm not saying that it's all 100%
- 8:16Speaker 14: Drake Mays' fault, but this felt like one of those
- 8:20Speaker 14: games where it was very clearly like the quarterback turned
- 8:23Speaker 14: the ball over three times in the fourth quarter.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:26Speaker 14: And we don't have to overcomplicate it.
- 8:27Speaker 2: And like you said, Josh McDaniel's got a lot of criticism. Oh,
- 8:31Speaker 2: he's being too conservative. He's doing this. I think... What
- 8:36Speaker 2: he was doing started to show fruits in the second half.
- 8:40Speaker 2: The runs were a lot better in the second half
- 8:43Speaker 2: than in the first half.
- 8:45Speaker 5: I didn't see that.
- 8:46Speaker 2: I did.
- 8:47Speaker 7: I saw two good runs on the last drive when
- 8:49Speaker 7: they're playing hurry up to try to go down the field,
- 8:52Speaker 7: and they caught him a couple. I think they had
- 8:53Speaker 7: a 10-yard run and an 8-yard run.
- 8:55Speaker 5: On the last drive. It wasn't really the only two
- 8:57Speaker 5: good runs of the night.
- 8:58Speaker 14: The bigger thing to me, though, isn't necessarily about the
- 9:01Speaker 14: body blows and them wearing down Seattle. It was managing
- 9:05Speaker 14: the pressure by the Seahawks. So on the one hand,
- 9:08Speaker 14: we can sit here and say the offensive line and
- 9:10Speaker 14: pass protection looked a lot better. Well, they dropped back
- 9:12Speaker 14: past a lot less. than they did in the Super Bowl.
- 9:15Speaker 14: So when Drake only has to drop back 32 times
- 9:18Speaker 14: instead of 47 times in the Super Bowl, that has
- 9:22Speaker 14: a cause and effect on the offensive line and the
- 9:24Speaker 14: pass protection. So I think they tried to stay balanced
- 9:29Speaker 14: in this game. And maybe they were running into a
- 9:31Speaker 14: brick wall, but it allowed them to control the pace
- 9:34Speaker 14: of the game.
- 9:35Speaker 7: So I think they did a lot of that in
- 9:36Speaker 7: the Super Bowl in the first half. And I think
- 9:39Speaker 7: the reason why they had so much trouble... Sustaining offenses
- 9:43Speaker 7: because they kept setting up second and eight. And I
- 9:47Speaker 7: don't have any problem with the number of runs that
- 9:49Speaker 7: they had.
- 9:50Speaker 5: I think they had.
- 9:52Speaker 7: 14 first down runs. I just wanted to change that
- 9:58Speaker 7: a little bit. More balanced on firsts.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Down.
- 10:01Speaker 2: And the other thing, yes, Seattle lost Sam Darnold, but
- 10:05Speaker 2: we lost A.J. Brown. And that had a trickle effect.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I'm sorry it did.
- 10:09Speaker 7: But they didn't really do anything offensively when he was
- 10:12Speaker 7: in the game.
- 10:13Speaker 2: But they didn't really have a chance to get things going.
- 10:16Speaker 2: They lost him in the second quarter.
- 10:17Speaker 1: The third quarter.
- 10:19Speaker 11: First drive of the third quarter.
- 10:20Speaker 2: First drive of the third quarter. You know, so, you know,
- 10:25Speaker 2: right now the state of that wide receiver room is
- 10:30Speaker 2: basically you lost Diggs and you lost Booty and you
- 10:34Speaker 2: lost Brown and you've picked up Romeo Dobbs. That's the
- 10:38Speaker 2: state of the room at the moment.
- 10:40Speaker 1: At the moment.
- 10:41Speaker 2: So they've got some work to do. wide receiver-wise going
- 10:46Speaker 2: forward for at least the next four weeks.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you just hope.
- 10:49Speaker 4: That this is an opportunity now for Drake May to
- 10:52Speaker 4: build that connection with especially a guy like Kyle Williams.
- 10:55Speaker 1: You know, Chisholm's probably going to get in there a
- 10:57Speaker 1: little bit. Is there something.
- 10:59Speaker 4: You know, developing that connection because I think Chisholm is
- 11:02Speaker 4: pretty good at the underneath stuff. And is he going to,
- 11:04Speaker 4: you know, could he develop into a piece that Drake says, oh,
- 11:07Speaker 4: I got this guy who's going to be open underneath
- 11:08Speaker 4: always so I can start to develop. But I would
- 11:11Speaker 4: just say in terms of what everything you guys are
- 11:12Speaker 4: talking about, I agree with Evan's point.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I like how they did it.
- 11:15Speaker 4: I don't also think it's not too much to expect
- 11:17Speaker 4: them to be better than 32nd in TV away and
- 11:20Speaker 4: rushing off.
- 11:20Speaker 1: They can be more efficient than that. It was terrible.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Sorry to cut you off, but this is my.
- 11:26Speaker 14: Biggest gripe right now with Josh McDaniels. Not the play
- 11:30Speaker 14: calling or the approach to the game against Seattle. Since
- 11:33Speaker 14: it started 2025, they're 26 in rush EPA offensively. They've
- 11:37Speaker 14: been explained what that is. So expected points added it's
- 11:42Speaker 14: efficiency metric. They're 26 in the league in it. So
- 11:45Speaker 14: like this takes into account down in distance situation of
- 11:49Speaker 14: the game. So like yards per carry is obviously just
- 11:52Speaker 14: a rod number, right?
- 11:53Speaker 11: This bakes in all this other stuff.
- 11:55Speaker 14: So Mike Vrabel at the owner's meetings earlier this off
- 11:59Speaker 14: season said, we need to be more efficient running the
- 12:02Speaker 14: ball that some of those long runs by Travion Henderson
- 12:05Speaker 14: were inflating the, our yards per carry number. I don't
- 12:07Speaker 14: know if they're using EPA exactly, but it jived with
- 12:10Speaker 14: what EPA is telling you. So they were last in
- 12:13Speaker 14: week one across the league and EPA per rush. They
- 12:16Speaker 14: were 25th in the league last year. So they haven't
- 12:19Speaker 14: been able to run the ball now for two years.
- 12:22Speaker 14: And at some point, if teams are going to play
- 12:25Speaker 14: with the two high safeties and they're not going to
- 12:27Speaker 14: let Drake make.
- 12:27Speaker 2: You got to make them pay.
- 12:28Speaker 11: You got to be able to run the ball.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:30Speaker 14: And I'm getting kind of sick and tired of watching
- 12:32Speaker 14: them run into a brick wall every single week.
- 12:34Speaker 7: I think maybe Henderson getting back out at practice, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 7: on Monday, maybe you get him back in the, in my.
- 12:41Speaker 2: And I will say this about Stevenson. I like him
- 12:46Speaker 2: as a player. But I do think the worry of
- 12:49Speaker 2: fumbling affects his running style, especially if he had flashbacks
- 12:54Speaker 2: of early season last year. I think he doesn't have
- 13:00Speaker 2: the ability to kind of move like he would if
- 13:04Speaker 2: he wasn't so worried about covering up the ball and fumbling.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I do think it has affected his running style.
- 13:11Speaker 7: I didn't say that thing about Henderson as a shot
- 13:14Speaker 7: at Stevenson. I thought, remind me, Stevenson was one of
- 13:16Speaker 7: the better players the other night. I mean, it didn't
- 13:18Speaker 7: show it statistically, but I thought he maximized everything he
- 13:22Speaker 7: could get. It's like Evan said, they're running into a
- 13:25Speaker 7: brick wall. He's getting hit in the backfield on half
- 13:28Speaker 7: of his carries. Um, I thought even some of the
- 13:31Speaker 7: short throw, I think he had six catches and he
- 13:33Speaker 7: got walloped on virtually every one of those too. Um,
- 13:36Speaker 7: so this was not a shot at Stevenson. I, first
- 13:38Speaker 7: of all, you guys know, I wouldn't take shots at
- 13:40Speaker 7: my boy. Um, but I just wonder if maybe you
- 13:44Speaker 7: get one of those 10 yard runs that Stevenson has,
- 13:48Speaker 7: if Henderson has a similar kind of opportunity, does he
- 13:51Speaker 7: get to the second level?
- 13:52Speaker 5: Does he run away from somebody?
- 13:54Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 13:56Speaker 7: To Evan's point, that might just mask the problem a
- 13:58Speaker 7: little bit, but it might give you some chunk plays, too.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Listen, if nothing else, Henderson is an upgrade over Kiner.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Let's face it. Your number two option goes up exponentially
- 14:12Speaker 2: this week, assuming that Henderson can play.
- 14:15Speaker 4: If they can get him on some of those checkdowns,
- 14:16Speaker 4: maybe some of the screens that they weren't really able
- 14:18Speaker 4: to execute that well, but I think, getting back to
- 14:21Speaker 4: what Ev was saying, like, what's frustrating is, you know,
- 14:23Speaker 4: you added the fullback this year. I know they lost
- 14:25Speaker 4: Julian Hill, but they made strides to improve the run game.
- 14:28Speaker 4: And that's just the bottom line, that it's becoming a
- 14:31Speaker 4: trend now with Drake May, where if he can't throw deep,
- 14:33Speaker 4: he's going to get antsy, and he's going to throw
- 14:36Speaker 4: you up one. And if you can't run the ball,
- 14:39Speaker 4: I mean, it just seems so connected to me that
- 14:41Speaker 4: this offseason you should have said, we absolutely have to
- 14:43Speaker 4: be able to run the ball when teams play two
- 14:46Speaker 4: high safeties and they have a light box. And if
- 14:48Speaker 4: we can't take advantage of that, you know, our offense
- 14:50Speaker 4: is really going to struggle and be in a pickle
- 14:52Speaker 4: for most of the year.
- 14:52Speaker 11: It just sets up everything else. Sets up play action.
- 14:55Speaker 14: You have to bring the safety down because they're running
- 14:58Speaker 14: the ball on you. Now those one-on-ones on the outside
- 15:00Speaker 14: are now presented again for him to throw the ball
- 15:03Speaker 14: down the field. And if they can't run the football
- 15:06Speaker 14: effectively and can't make teams pay for being in those
- 15:09Speaker 14: two high shells, then why would they play you any differently?
- 15:11Speaker 4: I mean, just look at Kansas City last night, right?
- 15:13Speaker 4: They're running all over the Broncos. Mahomes doesn't have to
- 15:15Speaker 4: really do as much.
- 15:16Speaker 11: And I mean.
- 15:17Speaker 1: That's probably an outlier, the way that they ran all
- 15:19Speaker 1: over them.
- 15:19Speaker 4: But still, I think that's a great example of you
- 15:22Speaker 4: could just take some of that pressure off of Drake.
- 15:25Speaker 14: Just imagine what we know Drake may can do. Passing
- 15:29Speaker 14: the ball.
- 15:30Speaker 11: If he didn't have a bottom five rushing offense.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:33Speaker 14: If he had some semblance of a running game as
- 15:35Speaker 14: a compliment to him.
- 15:37Speaker 4: We got to stack the box. We got to get
- 15:38Speaker 4: guys up front. And now you're opening yourself up to
- 15:41Speaker 4: everything that he does.
- 15:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:43Speaker 2: It has to be a priority to improve that running game.
- 15:45Speaker 2: No doubt about it. But I don't want to. you know,
- 15:49Speaker 2: dismiss the fact that Drake May did not have a
- 15:52Speaker 2: good game, even before the picks.
- 15:53Speaker 5: I agree, Fred.
- 15:54Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 15:54Speaker 7: And I think that part has been glossed over a
- 15:56Speaker 7: little bit. He didn't look great to me.
- 15:58Speaker 2: He didn't look great.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Throughout the game. He made some good plays. Don't get
- 16:01Speaker 5: me wrong. It wasn't, again, this is not a disaster.
- 16:04Speaker 2: No, no, no, no.
- 16:05Speaker 7: He made some plays and he made some plays in
- 16:07Speaker 7: that last drive too.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Listen, I think he still has visions of that last
- 16:11Speaker 2: game against Seattle. I read some places and maybe you
- 16:14Speaker 2: would back it up that he vacated the pocket a
- 16:17Speaker 2: little too early on some plays, you know, Yeah, I
- 16:20Speaker 2: think there was a.
- 16:21Speaker 1: That's another.
- 16:22Speaker 4: I think we're talking about the real stuff, but slightly
- 16:24Speaker 4: less real to me is what you're saying, Fred. The
- 16:26Speaker 4: leftover from the Super Bowl, the weight of the game,
- 16:28Speaker 4: you know, just remembering what they did last time and
- 16:31Speaker 4: you're sewing your own head and you spent all offseason
- 16:33Speaker 4: talking about that game and previewing this game. It's just
- 16:36Speaker 4: nice to get on to a different defense and maybe
- 16:39Speaker 4: that'll help him, you know, break that kind of cycle
- 16:41Speaker 4: because I think that's something that's standing out to the fans.
- 16:44Speaker 11: I thought it was fine for the first three quarters.
- 16:45Speaker 2: And here's some good news. We know from last year...
- 16:49Speaker 2: that Drake May is not a mistake repeater. For the
- 16:54Speaker 2: most part, he learns from his mistakes. And we saw
- 16:57Speaker 2: that last year, that something happened in one game, it
- 17:00Speaker 2: didn't happen in the next game. I hope that most
- 17:04Speaker 2: of all, he learns to just, as Evan would say,
- 17:08Speaker 2: take the profit, not be as impatient. He came out
- 17:12Speaker 2: of that locker room after the game, and immediately that
- 17:15Speaker 2: was his explanation. I was impatient. He didn't just get
- 17:21Speaker 2: that from himself. I'm sure the coaches told him that. That,
- 17:24Speaker 2: you know, you were impatient. You didn't take some of
- 17:28Speaker 2: the things that were there. And I hope he learned
- 17:31Speaker 2: from that. And if he did, then I think he's
- 17:33Speaker 2: going to be okay. I really do. I think we
- 17:36Speaker 2: still have our quarterback.
- 17:38Speaker 4: I don't know how much you guys remember last year's
- 17:40Speaker 4: Pittsburgh game, but there were some similar kind of like, no,
- 17:42Speaker 4: don't do that kind of moments where, you know, just
- 17:45Speaker 4: get down.
- 17:47Speaker 2: And what happened in that game? They had like five turnovers.
- 17:50Speaker 1: They had five turnovers, and we'll get into Pittsburgh.
- 17:53Speaker 4: I mean, obviously they have a disruptive front, but it
- 17:55Speaker 4: was just a Drake May early in the season thing.
- 17:57Speaker 4: You're getting a sample size now to get to know
- 17:59Speaker 4: this player and know what his ins and outs are.
- 18:01Speaker 4: But I'd also just say that I'm taking the long
- 18:04Speaker 4: view on this kid because it took us a while
- 18:06Speaker 4: to find him, and I'm invested in him, and I'm
- 18:08Speaker 4: invested in his development, and I didn't expect him— to
- 18:11Speaker 4: have an offseason and then come out here and.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Be like, oh, he knows what Seattle's doing now.
- 18:15Speaker 4: I maybe didn't expect it to be quite as sloppy
- 18:18Speaker 4: at the end as it was, but this is going
- 18:20Speaker 4: to be a little bit of a process with this guy,
- 18:22Speaker 4: and he set a high bar last year with his performance.
- 18:24Speaker 2: And I give Seattle a lot of credit. They do
- 18:26Speaker 2: have a good defense. They were the faster team. And
- 18:30Speaker 2: like I said, going into this game, I'm a scared
- 18:33Speaker 2: a little bit of McDonald. I think he's a damn
- 18:35Speaker 2: good coach.
- 18:36Speaker 11: I won't have to play him again.
- 18:39Speaker 7: And I agree with you, Fred, because even with those
- 18:41Speaker 7: guys missing, they did it in a little bit of
- 18:43Speaker 7: a different way because they had to cover up, you know,
- 18:46Speaker 7: for missing all those safeties. And I, I, I agree
- 18:49Speaker 7: with that point wholeheartedly. I came away very impressed again
- 18:53Speaker 7: with the way.
- 18:54Speaker 5: They play defense.
- 18:55Speaker 2: They do.
- 18:55Speaker 7: And I, again, I think I said in the post
- 18:57Speaker 7: game show, I, It's one of the only times I
- 19:00Speaker 7: ever kind of wished I was in Evan's shoes.
- 19:03Speaker 5: What is this scheme?
- 19:04Speaker 7: I don't know enough about the X's and O's to
- 19:06Speaker 7: know exactly what he's doing, but I know enough about
- 19:09Speaker 7: watching football to know that not every team does that stuff.
- 19:12Speaker 5: They seem to consistently.
- 19:15Speaker 1: confuse.
- 19:16Speaker 14: People yeah the way that they play they do a
- 19:18Speaker 14: really good job like what they're so they sit in
- 19:20Speaker 14: a too high structure they play at 80 percent of
- 19:23Speaker 14: the time more than any other team in the league
- 19:25Speaker 14: but they have different change-ups of their too high coverages
- 19:28Speaker 14: so sometimes it's quarters sometimes it's cover six and you
- 19:32Speaker 14: don't don't really know which way it is like, you
- 19:36Speaker 14: almost have to play them like looking for open space
- 19:39Speaker 14: versus like, let's try to read the coverage. Cause you're
- 19:41Speaker 14: not going to be able to read the coverage. So
- 19:43Speaker 14: they kind of do a good job of like blurring
- 19:45Speaker 14: the lines between those different coverages, but they also do
- 19:48Speaker 14: a great job up front. And the fact that they
- 19:51Speaker 14: can stop the run as well as they can playing
- 19:53Speaker 14: with light boxes is just a Seattle thing.
- 19:56Speaker 11: It's a Leonard, Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy thing.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Great players.
- 19:59Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 20:00Speaker 14: And so that, that's a big, the players deserve a
- 20:03Speaker 14: lot of credit for how good they are at stopping
- 20:05Speaker 14: the run.
- 20:05Speaker 2: You know, And they're just fundamentally sound. For example, they'll
- 20:10Speaker 2: send a corner on a blitz, and Drake May will
- 20:12Speaker 2: see it, and he'll dump it over his head.
- 20:14Speaker 15: Boom.
- 20:14Speaker 6: Tackled.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Exactly. Someone sliding over to fill that space immediately. You
- 20:19Speaker 2: go back to preseason for us, and I get it.
- 20:21Speaker 2: It really wasn't our defense out there. But I think
- 20:24Speaker 2: it was that last game or the last home game
- 20:27Speaker 2: we had where we got burned like three times in
- 20:29Speaker 2: the same play. It was that play where we blitzed,
- 20:32Speaker 2: they'd throw it over it, but there's nobody there to
- 20:34Speaker 2: fill that gap.
- 20:35Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 20:36Speaker 2: You know, they do that so well.
- 20:39Speaker 14: They play with great eyes, great eyes and coverage. And so,
- 20:42Speaker 14: you know, the flat corner has got eyes in the
- 20:45Speaker 14: backfield because he's zone dropping. And so when Drake May
- 20:48Speaker 14: throws the ball into the flat, he can just fall
- 20:51Speaker 14: off the receiver and just jump the flat because he
- 20:53Speaker 14: knows that the ball's already out. So he's not at
- 20:55Speaker 14: risk there. So it's just a bunch of different things.
- 20:57Speaker 14: You know, McDonald is fantastic. They don't blitz a lot.
- 21:01Speaker 14: but they time up their blitzes perfectly. And when they blitz,
- 21:04Speaker 14: they get home. So the scheme is really well done
- 21:07Speaker 14: in terms of the concepts of the blitzes that they're running,
- 21:10Speaker 14: but they're also, their timing is impeccable.
- 21:12Speaker 5: The best way I could say it with, with, with them.
- 21:15Speaker 7: When I watch is it, it seems like they kind of,
- 21:20Speaker 7: I don't know what the right word is. Bait you
- 21:22Speaker 7: into doing what they want you to do. Like they
- 21:24Speaker 7: want you to throw those little short passes because they're
- 21:27Speaker 7: ready for them and they're going to tackle.
- 21:28Speaker 15: Right.
- 21:29Speaker 5: And, That's why.
- 21:31Speaker 2: And if you don't, we're going to sack you.
- 21:32Speaker 7: That's why when you said, like, I thought Drake May
- 21:34Speaker 7: was fine.
- 21:35Speaker 2: I agree.
- 21:36Speaker 5: I think he was fine just taking what they were
- 21:38Speaker 5: giving him.
- 21:39Speaker 7: You know, he's like 10 for 12 in the first
- 21:42Speaker 7: half for like 66 yards.
- 21:44Speaker 5: Like, and they scored one touchdown.
- 21:46Speaker 7: You know, and I understand, like, 40 yards of that
- 21:49Speaker 7: doesn't count on the yards because of the interference.
- 21:52Speaker 5: The flea flicker was there. It was a bad throw.
- 21:56Speaker 2: It was there.
- 21:56Speaker 7: And it should have been just a touchdown. The numbers
- 21:59Speaker 7: would have looked a little bit better. But I don't
- 22:02Speaker 7: think that was the one outlier to me in the
- 22:04Speaker 7: first half. That was their one really good drive. And
- 22:07Speaker 7: then the second half, really their only points were set
- 22:11Speaker 7: up by a roughing the punter. This is why I
- 22:16Speaker 7: came away from the game frustrated. I think Seattle's defense
- 22:19Speaker 7: is tremendous, and they.
- 22:21Speaker 5: Played really well. But they also, as a team, were
- 22:24Speaker 5: really sloppy in this game. Seattle was.
- 22:26Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 22:27Speaker 2: They had a lot of penalties.
- 22:27Speaker 7: They lost their quarterback, and they self-destructed numerous times, and
- 22:32Speaker 7: you still let them off the hook. This was an
- 22:34Speaker 7: opportunity to go to Seattle and get really a huge
- 22:38Speaker 7: win to open the season that a lot of people
- 22:40Speaker 7: weren't really expecting, and you probably should have had it.
- 22:44Speaker 7: That's what I think the frustrating part is.
- 22:45Speaker 2: It's disappointing. We lost 13-10 to the world champs.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Get one half of A.J. Brown and then see you
- 22:52Speaker 1: in November. We lost A.J.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Brown. So it's disappointing. But listen, we lost to the
- 22:57Speaker 2: Raiders last year in week one. In 2024, we beat
- 23:00Speaker 2: the Bengals and we thought we were going to the
- 23:01Speaker 2: Super Bowl. How did that turn out? So it's week one, folks.
- 23:05Speaker 2: It's week one. It's not good. We're... things are going
- 23:10Speaker 2: to be on the rise.
- 23:11Speaker 4: Did you watch any other games this weekend, Fred, that
- 23:12Speaker 4: maybe changed how you viewed the Patriots' loss?
- 23:16Speaker 2: Well, you know, I can't help it as a fan
- 23:18Speaker 2: just looking at how some of these offenses came right
- 23:21Speaker 2: out of the gate being able to score points.
- 23:24Speaker 11: They all play Seattle.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Well, Chicago, that was freaking nuts.
- 23:30Speaker 1: We put them on.
- 23:31Speaker 2: The field in Seattle.
- 23:32Speaker 7: But somebody played a defense that's Maybe a notch below Seattle.
- 23:37Speaker 11: Texans. Texans.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Even though his career is over.
- 23:41Speaker 2: That first game, Texans and Buffalo, both teams.
- 23:45Speaker 1: C.J.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Stroud is not supposed to be good anymore. But they
- 23:48Speaker 2: were scoring points left and right. And obviously Josh Allen
- 23:51Speaker 2: is Josh Allen. And he looked in prime form on
- 23:54Speaker 2: week one.
- 23:56Speaker 5: My big takeaway from that game is I thought immediately
- 23:58Speaker 5: of Mike.
- 23:59Speaker 7: I'm watching red zone. First drive comes up. They get
- 24:02Speaker 7: a couple of first downs. Then it's like third and seven.
- 24:04Speaker 7: And they call like a designed run. And I'm like,
- 24:07Speaker 7: they can't help themselves. Like, we're not going to put
- 24:10Speaker 7: him in harm's way anymore. We're going to try to
- 24:12Speaker 7: be a little bit more cerebral about what we do
- 24:14Speaker 7: recklessly with Josh Allen. And it's like one drive into
- 24:17Speaker 7: the season, and he's already.
- 24:19Speaker 5: Taken on linebackers. I don't know. The guy's like a cyborg.
- 24:22Speaker 5: I don't know how he even survives.
- 24:23Speaker 2: And the other thing is now they've got Brady calling
- 24:26Speaker 2: the plays, also the head coach. And, you know, they
- 24:29Speaker 2: were talking about, you know, maybe last year, In critical times,
- 24:32Speaker 2: McDermott might have put a governor on Brady, and now
- 24:36Speaker 2: Brady can do what he wants to do and be
- 24:38Speaker 2: a little bit more. offensive with his offensive playing.
- 24:41Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 24:42Speaker 1: It looked like prime Josh Allen. I mean, and then
- 24:45Speaker 1: an absolute, I.
- 24:46Speaker 11: Was going to say almost threw the game away.
- 24:47Speaker 5: I think that was a miscommunication, but he threw it
- 24:51Speaker 5: right to last year.
- 24:52Speaker 1: You've got to pick that off.
- 24:53Speaker 2: So you've got a lot of teams with some of
- 24:55Speaker 2: the better quarterbacks coming right out of the gate and
- 24:58Speaker 2: scoring points.
- 24:59Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 24:59Speaker 2: And so I get it. Fans are like, why not us?
- 25:02Speaker 2: Why can't we do that?
- 25:03Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 25:03Speaker 2: And then that goes back to Josh McDaniels, you know,
- 25:06Speaker 2: in the style of offense that he likes to play.
- 25:10Speaker 2: One thought that occurred to me about how we handle
- 25:13Speaker 2: wide receivers on this team, and I get it. Not
- 25:18Speaker 2: every wide receiver doesn't have the skill set of, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 2: they don't all have the same skill set. But sometimes
- 25:24Speaker 2: with that position, maybe you treat them like football players
- 25:28Speaker 2: instead of pieces to a puzzle. And just say, yeah,
- 25:33Speaker 2: we can run booty over the middle sometimes. He doesn't
- 25:35Speaker 2: always have to be a boundary wide receiver. I just
- 25:39Speaker 2: worry that we pigeonhole guys into certain things and we're
- 25:44Speaker 2: afraid to just let them be football players, particularly at
- 25:47Speaker 2: that position. I don't know. It's just a thought that
- 25:51Speaker 2: occurred to me.
- 25:52Speaker 14: I don't have very much concern about their passing game. Uh,
- 25:55Speaker 14: I think their drop back passing game is, is really good.
- 25:59Speaker 14: One of the best in the league, their concepts are sound. They'd,
- 26:02Speaker 14: It all makes sense to me when you watch it
- 26:05Speaker 14: and everything like that. Their run game, I think they
- 26:08Speaker 14: need to be more creative with how they run the football.
- 26:10Speaker 14: There needs to be more deception. There needs to be
- 26:12Speaker 14: more motion. There needs to be more eye candy.
- 26:15Speaker 16: To the defense.
- 26:15Speaker 2: I hear what you're saying, but I'm going to be
- 26:18Speaker 2: really pissed if by halfway through the season, things just
- 26:21Speaker 2: don't look right with Romeo Dobbs. You know, that tells
- 26:27Speaker 2: me that, okay, what are we, because they looked okay
- 26:30Speaker 2: in green Bay.
- 26:31Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 26:32Speaker 5: I don't have a huge concern about that. I'm with Evan.
- 26:35Speaker 7: I mean, despite the fact that the passing game wasn't
- 26:38Speaker 7: great last Wednesday night, I don't really have many, you know,
- 26:42Speaker 7: and again, you guys can point to me and tell me, well,
- 26:46Speaker 7: you got this all wrong.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I did.
- 26:48Speaker 7: I thought the Patriots were going to come off flying.
- 26:50Speaker 7: I thought they were going to be one of these
- 26:51Speaker 7: offenses that, that we're talking about with Chicago and Buffalo
- 26:56Speaker 7: and Houston that really look good coming out of the gates,
- 26:59Speaker 7: I think the passing game.
- 27:01Speaker 5: Is going to be fine.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Even without A.J.
- 27:05Speaker 10: Brown?
- 27:05Speaker 7: Yeah, I think they'll be fine. I don't really have
- 27:07Speaker 7: a huge amount of concern about Dobbs.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Now, I'm not going to lie.
- 27:10Speaker 7: I have a little more concern today than I did
- 27:12Speaker 7: before the game. I thought everything looked great. sort of about,
- 27:17Speaker 7: I would say, maybe halfway in training camp, the rest
- 27:19Speaker 7: of the way.
- 27:20Speaker 5: I thought everything looked great with Dobbs, and then he
- 27:22Speaker 5: dropped a pass.
- 27:23Speaker 1: It happens.
- 27:24Speaker 14: They need to get him more involved earlier in the game.
- 27:27Speaker 14: His first target was, I think, was the drop.
- 27:29Speaker 2: The drop.
- 27:30Speaker 14: And it was an enormous drop. I'm not dismissing it
- 27:33Speaker 14: as a bad play. But that's what, the third or
- 27:35Speaker 14: fourth quarter of the game? They need to get him
- 27:37Speaker 14: more involved earlier in the game to get him up
- 27:39Speaker 14: and running. But I think their passing game is going
- 27:42Speaker 14: to be fine.
- 27:44Speaker 11: Their run game.
- 27:45Speaker 14: It just feels like when you watch these other teams play,
- 27:49Speaker 14: they have a lot more window dressing in their running game.
- 27:52Speaker 14: There's a lot more deception to the defense. There's a
- 27:54Speaker 14: lot more motion. You know, the Patriots in week one,
- 27:57Speaker 14: 29th in the league in motion rate. they kind of
- 28:01Speaker 14: just line up and run at you. And for right now,
- 28:04Speaker 14: they don't have the blockers to just line up and
- 28:07Speaker 14: run at you.
- 28:08Speaker 11: So I don't know if that's being more exotic pre-snap.
- 28:12Speaker 14: I don't know if that's getting Drake May involved in
- 28:15Speaker 14: the running game a little bit more and using him
- 28:17Speaker 14: as sort of a leverage against the defense. But they
- 28:20Speaker 14: need to find ways to be a little bit more
- 28:24Speaker 14: creative in the running game.
- 28:25Speaker 2: And the thing that we... we're not even really including
- 28:28Speaker 2: all the times that may did end up running, not
- 28:31Speaker 2: a design run, but because there was nobody open and
- 28:34Speaker 2: it was successful.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 2: But without those runs, where would they have been?
- 28:37Speaker 1: Well, no, that was, I mean, that was some of
- 28:39Speaker 1: his best plays.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:40Speaker 4: And you love to have that in the box, but
- 28:42Speaker 4: I just, I keep going back to Evan's point of,
- 28:44Speaker 4: it does feel like we've been watching the same three
- 28:46Speaker 4: yards in a cloud of dust for the last few seasons. And,
- 28:49Speaker 4: you know, we were watching the game with, with Troy
- 28:51Speaker 4: here and he's, you know, singing how great Ramond Ray is.
- 28:54Speaker 4: And he just has never had the offensive line. And
- 28:56Speaker 4: I'm just like, Could we get them the offensive line?
- 28:58Speaker 4: Is that possible?
- 28:59Speaker 1: Like, you know, can we get these guys going?
- 29:02Speaker 2: For now, do we need the pass to set up
- 29:04Speaker 2: the run? Do we need to throw on early downs
- 29:06Speaker 2: a little bit more? High percentage.
- 29:08Speaker 1: That's just a tough way to live, though.
- 29:09Speaker 4: You know, you want to be a team that is
- 29:11Speaker 4: physical and tough and your run game travels and you
- 29:13Speaker 4: can feel confident in it no matter.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Where you're playing.
- 29:17Speaker 2: That's why I said for now.
- 29:19Speaker 7: No, I think this is perfectly fine. And I would just, again,
- 29:22Speaker 7: this is, we overreact to everything we see in week one.
- 29:26Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 29:27Speaker 7: But I did feel like when they did that, when
- 29:29Speaker 7: they did what you're talking about, Fred, they had success.
- 29:31Speaker 7: When they threw it on first down, they averaged over
- 29:33Speaker 7: seven yards of play. Now it was only like seven times.
- 29:36Speaker 2: That's okay.
- 29:37Speaker 7: And when they ran it on first down, I think
- 29:39Speaker 7: it was four times. like two yards of play.
- 29:42Speaker 11: It was 16 for 2.6. That was close enough.
- 29:45Speaker 14: It was 11 drop backs. He scrambled on two of them.
- 29:48Speaker 14: He averaged over six yards of pass. It was like
- 29:51Speaker 14: nine attempts for like 60-something.
- 29:53Speaker 5: So, again, when they had their reasonable.
- 29:57Speaker 7: Production, offensively, they had a couple of sustained drives here
- 30:01Speaker 7: and there, the one for the touchdown. I think they
- 30:03Speaker 7: were consistently in third and three instead of third and nine.
- 30:06Speaker 7: I don't think they converted a third down all night
- 30:08Speaker 7: that was beyond eight yards. Now, on the last drive,
- 30:13Speaker 7: they were forced to convert a couple of fourth downs
- 30:15Speaker 7: after the third down. I think there was a third
- 30:18Speaker 7: and long that they got almost all of it, and
- 30:20Speaker 7: then they got the fourth down. Fourth and two, I
- 30:22Speaker 7: think Drake scrambled and ran for the first down on
- 30:25Speaker 7: the last drive. But again, you can do your thing, Fred.
- 30:29Speaker 7: I don't think that makes you.
- 30:30Speaker 5: Like, oh, we're not men.
- 30:31Speaker 7: We're not manly enough because we're not telling you that
- 30:34Speaker 7: we're going to run.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Let's just win the game.
- 30:36Speaker 7: Not a lot of teams can just line up and say,
- 30:38Speaker 7: we're going to run and you can't stop us. There's
- 30:40Speaker 7: not a lot of teams in the league that can
- 30:41Speaker 7: do that.
- 30:41Speaker 2: I'll forfeit the man card for a game if we
- 30:43Speaker 2: can beat Seattle. I mean, that's fine. I don't care
- 30:46Speaker 2: how we do it. Let's just win.
- 30:48Speaker 14: Are you at the point where the horizontal passing game
- 30:52Speaker 14: can be your running game?
- 30:54Speaker 11: If you can't run the ball. Is he at that
- 30:56Speaker 11: point great?
- 30:57Speaker 5: I'll tell you my concern about that.
- 30:58Speaker 11: Because Brady's played like that before.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Is it too late to order food? I'm hungry.
- 31:05Speaker 5: Get Fred some food. I don't want him.
- 31:07Speaker 2: I'm going to pass out.
- 31:09Speaker 11: He needs his Snickers, I think.
- 31:11Speaker 7: But I would say, Fred, you made a point early
- 31:13Speaker 7: in the show about Drake May. He has shown the
- 31:15Speaker 7: ability to put sort of Bad performances or bad decisions
- 31:21Speaker 7: behind him. He learns quickly, doesn't necessarily repeat. But there
- 31:24Speaker 7: is one area that I think he has consistently. I
- 31:28Speaker 7: don't want to say every game, but it's the same
- 31:30Speaker 7: kind of mistakes consistently, and that is the impatience. And
- 31:35Speaker 7: I thought it was really interesting to listen to Mike
- 31:37Speaker 7: Grable yesterday when asked about something like that. Grable said,
- 31:42Speaker 7: We got to prevent him from being bored.
- 31:45Speaker 5: He can't get bored. And I think.
- 31:48Speaker 14: Same goes to the fans. It's a boring way to play.
- 31:51Speaker 14: It's a five-yard passes and run game.
- 31:54Speaker 5: I don't think he wants to play that way.
- 31:56Speaker 7: And that is a minor, like very, very small C
- 31:59Speaker 7: concern with Drake May with me. Is he maybe a
- 32:03Speaker 7: little bit more Drew Bledsoe than Tom Brady?
- 32:06Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Because Drew absolutely is many.
- 32:09Speaker 7: Good things, as I'll say about Drew, he drove me
- 32:11Speaker 7: crazy by doing that. I have this arm, and I
- 32:15Speaker 7: want to show it off, and I don't want to
- 32:16Speaker 7: win that way. I want to win this way.
- 32:18Speaker 1: It's backyard football.
- 32:20Speaker 7: It's a different style because Drew never ran around like
- 32:22Speaker 7: Drake May, but he wants to push the ball down
- 32:24Speaker 7: the field.
- 32:24Speaker 14: If you're Mike Grable and Josh McDaniels, don't you say
- 32:26Speaker 14: to Drake May, you'll get your opportunities to throw the
- 32:29Speaker 14: ball down the field. If you play this way, right?
- 32:32Speaker 14: Because this is the blueprint of what teams are doing
- 32:35Speaker 14: against you. And I think these last five games, they've
- 32:38Speaker 14: played the best defenses in the league. And there's been
- 32:40Speaker 14: a lot of tape for these teams to watch of
- 32:43Speaker 14: what Josh McDaniels and Drake may are doing.
- 32:45Speaker 1: There's a fair point. There's a blueprint.
- 32:47Speaker 11: They, they have.
- 32:48Speaker 14: Found a blueprint of how to slow down the offense.
- 32:50Speaker 14: So if you're Josh McDaniels and Mike Rabel, you have
- 32:53Speaker 14: to say to Drake may, in my opinion, Hey, We
- 32:56Speaker 14: got to throw the short stuff.
- 32:57Speaker 11: We got to run the football.
- 32:59Speaker 14: Then they're going to walk the safeties down, and then
- 33:01Speaker 14: you can throw the ball over the top.
- 33:03Speaker 2: So last year, the numbers said this was a really
- 33:06Speaker 2: good offense. Yeah. Right?
- 33:08Speaker 5: It was a good offense.
- 33:09Speaker 2: But was it too dependent on the X plays?
- 33:14Speaker 1: No, I've never heard that before.
- 33:16Speaker 4: I mean that in a weird way because they were
- 33:19Speaker 4: excellent at that, and that was their bread and butter.
- 33:21Speaker 4: You always think of those as the thing that puts
- 33:23Speaker 4: you over the top, not the thing that makes your
- 33:24Speaker 4: offense go bad. I think you might be onto something.
- 33:27Speaker 14: I think that David, his efficiency throwing the ball down
- 33:30Speaker 14: the field was not going to be repeatable.
- 33:32Speaker 15: Right.
- 33:33Speaker 14: No, like the amount of, the amount of completions that
- 33:35Speaker 14: they had down the field was, that were difficult catches
- 33:40Speaker 14: and throws was not going to be repeatable. But I,
- 33:44Speaker 14: I think that the bigger thing that's happening right now
- 33:46Speaker 14: is that teams are making them March. Like they are,
- 33:49Speaker 14: they want them to go 12, 13 plays. I think
- 33:52Speaker 14: the last drive of the game was 15 play drive
- 33:54Speaker 14: before he threw the pick.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:55Speaker 5: Two fourth down conversions.
- 33:57Speaker 1: That's the way I see.
- 33:58Speaker 14: That's the way that they, that they want to force
- 34:00Speaker 14: this Patriots team to play because of the, the threat
- 34:03Speaker 14: of the X place.
- 34:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 34:05Speaker 11: So can they do it the other way? like that's
- 34:07Speaker 11: the chess match.
- 34:08Speaker 14: So I think from September on, you know, to like,
- 34:12Speaker 14: let's call it December, the Patriots kind of came out
- 34:16Speaker 14: like gangbusters, like Drake May and Josh McDaniels. And you,
- 34:19Speaker 14: then what happens is these defensive coordinators, these coaches are smart.
- 34:23Speaker 14: They watch a lot of tape, they figure out what
- 34:25Speaker 14: you're doing and they find answers to it all off season.
- 34:28Speaker 14: That's what all the Patriots opponents have been doing is
- 34:30Speaker 14: watching Drake May tape to figure out what he did
- 34:34Speaker 14: to light the world on fire last year. Now it's
- 34:37Speaker 14: Josh McDaniels and Drake Mays' turn to counterpunch.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 11: You know, what's the counter?
- 34:42Speaker 4: I think Paul is interesting because I was wondering, is
- 34:44Speaker 4: this a maturity thing? Is this just the young kid
- 34:46Speaker 4: who's got the big arm and this is how he's
- 34:48Speaker 4: won in college? And, you know, can that, over the
- 34:50Speaker 4: course of time, leave him? But you mentioned Drew.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Did it ever leave Drew that, like, I got a
- 34:56Speaker 1: big arm. Screw it. I'm chucking it. You know, like,
- 34:58Speaker 1: I've been watching the 96s and see plenty of that.
- 35:01Speaker 7: But even look at, like, the 2001, like, the clip
- 35:04Speaker 7: that everybody remembers in the Super Bowl.
- 35:07Speaker 5: Right before the last drive.
- 35:09Speaker 7: And, you know, they're talking to Brady and telling Brady
- 35:13Speaker 7: to do this, this, and this.
- 35:15Speaker 5: And Drew says, F that.
- 35:17Speaker 11: Go up there and sling it.
- 35:18Speaker 7: Because that's the way Drew would have done it. Now,
- 35:20Speaker 7: the difference between Brady and Drew is Brady slung.
- 35:23Speaker 2: It to the right guy.
- 35:25Speaker 5: To the open guy who would catch it. Again, sorry, Drew.
- 35:28Speaker 5: You know, I love you. But that was the difference.
- 35:31Speaker 5: I think Drew was good. Brady was great.
- 35:33Speaker 7: And right now, I think May has... far more just
- 35:37Speaker 7: God-given ability than Drew did. Like, Drew had the arm.
- 35:41Speaker 7: Drew probably had a better arm than Drake May, but
- 35:44Speaker 7: that's it. Everything else, Drake May has over Drew Bledsoe
- 35:47Speaker 7: in spades. So I think he can learn it, but
- 35:51Speaker 7: I do worry if that's how he wants to play.
- 35:53Speaker 7: I'm going to get a little defensive of Drake May
- 35:55Speaker 7: now from the game. So, Evan, you brought up the
- 35:57Speaker 7: point of, you know, like those chunk players, those opportunities,
- 36:02Speaker 7: if you play this way, those will present themselves differently
- 36:06Speaker 7: I could understand. I'm not saying that this is what
- 36:08Speaker 7: Drake May did, but I could understand if he looked
- 36:10Speaker 7: at it and said, I've been checking it down all night.
- 36:13Speaker 5: For three quarters, I've been checking it down.
- 36:14Speaker 7: We're not moving the ball because we didn't have any yards,
- 36:17Speaker 7: and we're not scoring any points.
- 36:18Speaker 5: Because we only have 10. And all of a sudden,
- 36:20Speaker 5: they are.
- 36:20Speaker 13: Right?
- 36:21Speaker 7: So now it's the fourth quarter. We're not moving the ball.
- 36:25Speaker 7: I've got to do something different.
- 36:27Speaker 11: Did he have to do something different, though?
- 36:29Speaker 5: I'm not saying. I said I'm trying to defend him
- 36:30Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 36:31Speaker 2: He's getting into his head.
- 36:31Speaker 5: I'm trying to get into his head. Maybe he looked
- 36:33Speaker 5: at it and said.
- 36:35Speaker 7: We can't score doing it this way. We've done it
- 36:38Speaker 7: this way for three quarters. We have 10 points. He's
- 36:42Speaker 7: obviously wrong. We know what happened. He threw three interceptions.
- 36:45Speaker 7: But they were also winning the game.
- 36:46Speaker 2: I know.
- 36:47Speaker 7: And that's why I said he was obviously wrong. Because
- 36:49Speaker 7: they were winning the game. But I can understand if
- 36:53Speaker 7: he was thinking, I've got to do something.
- 36:55Speaker 5: To put this game away.
- 36:56Speaker 2: He said he was impatient. He was. Like I said,
- 37:00Speaker 2: he's not the only one that came up with that conclusion.
- 37:03Speaker 2: I haven't tried.
- 37:03Speaker 5: About the first one to Dobbs.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:06Speaker 7: That was the real, like, everybody's, any high school player
- 37:10Speaker 7: knows the last one can't happen, right? You've got to
- 37:12Speaker 7: either throw the ball away or something.
- 37:14Speaker 5: You can't throw a pick.
- 37:15Speaker 2: You never wrong long.
- 37:16Speaker 7: When you're in field goal range and you can go
- 37:18Speaker 7: to overtime, everybody saw what happened. But I agree with
- 37:21Speaker 7: Evan's point on the first one. It's just like, you're
- 37:23Speaker 7: on the 45-yard line.
- 37:24Speaker 5: It's second and nine.
- 37:26Speaker 7: Even if you don't take the check down to Kiner,
- 37:29Speaker 7: just throw it away.
- 37:30Speaker 1: He's kind of like.
- 37:33Speaker 7: I thought when I saw it live, Ev, I thought
- 37:36Speaker 7: it was one of your honey hole shots. Like, I
- 37:38Speaker 7: thought if he drilled it in there, right, he might
- 37:41Speaker 7: have been able to get it to him on the sideline.
- 37:42Speaker 5: He floats it to the inside.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Like, that can't happen.
- 37:47Speaker 7: And you're probably one first down away from a field
- 37:50Speaker 7: goal that restores you to a score lead.
- 37:52Speaker 5: That one is really tough.
- 37:54Speaker 11: That one was really tough. Changed the whole momentum of
- 37:56Speaker 11: the game.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Agreed.
- 37:57Speaker 11: And I.
- 37:59Speaker 14: on that play that the underneath corner Pritchett, I think
- 38:01Speaker 14: is the one that actually ended up picking it off. He,
- 38:05Speaker 14: he carries Dobbs's vertical route underneath Dobbs. So he's playing
- 38:08Speaker 14: the flat and cover too, but he actually got an
- 38:11Speaker 14: insane amount of depth and carries the route all the
- 38:13Speaker 14: way down the field.
- 38:15Speaker 11: So like, it would have been a whole shot if
- 38:16Speaker 11: he had stayed in the flat.
- 38:18Speaker 12: Okay.
- 38:18Speaker 11: But instead the corner carried the route.
- 38:21Speaker 14: So the space is now the check down and Kiner
- 38:23Speaker 14: is just in the flat, just with nobody within 10
- 38:26Speaker 14: yards of them.
- 38:27Speaker 11: You know, waiting for the check down.
- 38:29Speaker 14: So it's just, I think everybody needs to come to
- 38:33Speaker 14: terms with the fact that last year was a very
- 38:36Speaker 14: entertaining brand of football that they played throwing the ball
- 38:39Speaker 14: down the field like that and making the plays down
- 38:41Speaker 14: the field that they made is just an awesome brand
- 38:44Speaker 14: of football. But what everybody's trying to get Drake me
- 38:47Speaker 14: to do is play boring football. And I think that
- 38:50Speaker 14: a lot of these guys, Alan Mahomes, they've had stretches
- 38:54Speaker 14: where this is what teams have done against them is
- 38:56Speaker 14: we're going to play the two high safeties and we're
- 38:58Speaker 14: going to turn you into check down.
- 38:59Speaker 5: Charlie Mahomes played pretty boring football last night.
- 39:02Speaker 14: Didn't complete a single pass over 10 yards in the
- 39:04Speaker 14: air last night and won the game 31 to 10.
- 39:06Speaker 11: Yep.
- 39:07Speaker 14: So, you know, these are the messages. If I'm Mike
- 39:09Speaker 14: Rabel that I'm saying, do you see my homes last night?
- 39:12Speaker 14: Didn't complete a single pass over 10 yards, not a
- 39:15Speaker 14: single one. They scored 31 points and they won the
- 39:17Speaker 14: game going away.
- 39:19Speaker 2: If I'm Drake, like, okay, let's have a guy that
- 39:21Speaker 2: can run for 180 yards.
- 39:23Speaker 14: But in theory, they should be able to because of
- 39:26Speaker 14: the way the defense is playing them, right?
- 39:28Speaker 1: I know.
- 39:29Speaker 9: I know.
- 39:30Speaker 1: The whole thing.
- 39:30Speaker 2: But he's a special walker. The speed in which he
- 39:34Speaker 2: hits the line is elite. And his vision, he doesn't
- 39:41Speaker 2: need to because his vision is fluid. So it's just boom.
- 39:47Speaker 2: He's going to go where he sees the crack, and
- 39:50Speaker 2: he hits it so fast that the defense doesn't have
- 39:53Speaker 2: time to react. I want to dissect what you guys
- 39:57Speaker 2: think the loss of A.J. Brown means for at least
- 40:01Speaker 2: the next four games.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Huge challenge for Drake May. There's nobody he trusts with
- 40:07Speaker 4: the confidence he had in Stephon Diggs. I thought this
- 40:11Speaker 4: year was going to be harder. I thought there'd be
- 40:13Speaker 4: more injuries. The schedule's going to be harder. Everything's going
- 40:15Speaker 4: to be more difficult. It hit immediately, and I feel
- 40:18Speaker 4: like it's all on Drake May. I'm taking the point
- 40:21Speaker 4: of view of hopefully this is the thing that's going
- 40:24Speaker 4: to help him get over what Evan's talking about to
- 40:26Speaker 4: ascend because he doesn't have that guy now. It might
- 40:29Speaker 4: be tough sledding. I really don't know what we're going
- 40:31Speaker 4: to see with this unit. It goes back to a
- 40:34Speaker 4: couple years ago. That's what you're kind of looking like
- 40:36Speaker 4: with the kind of weapons that are around him left now.
- 40:39Speaker 1: There's a lot on him.
- 40:41Speaker 7: I still think he has plenty to work with, and
- 40:43Speaker 7: I don't really have a lot of concern.
- 40:46Speaker 5: I mean, losing A.J. Brown is huge.
- 40:49Speaker 7: But I think with Dobbs, Hollins, and Douglas, there's enough
- 40:53Speaker 7: to work with there. Like, there's no Demir Byrds.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I think Hollins is Hollins. He's consistent. He's dependable.
- 41:00Speaker 5: And I think Drake thinks that.
- 41:02Speaker 15: Right.
- 41:02Speaker 5: As you saw in the fourth quarter.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Do you think that Williams and Douglas, if they played
- 41:07Speaker 2: to the level they played last year, this year, is
- 41:09Speaker 2: that enough?
- 41:10Speaker 1: Douglas, no.
- 41:11Speaker 5: Williams, sure.
- 41:12Speaker 1: So.
- 41:13Speaker 2: This is kind of what I'm getting at.
- 41:14Speaker 5: I don't think Williams is going to see a huge uptick.
- 41:16Speaker 2: So in order to make up for the loss of A.J. Brown,
- 41:20Speaker 2: guys like Douglas have to step up.
- 41:22Speaker 5: I thought Douglas was pretty good the other night.
- 41:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I do, too. But he has to be better
- 41:28Speaker 2: than he was last year.
- 41:29Speaker 5: Yes, and he was last night.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Kyle Williams has to be better than he was last year.
- 41:34Speaker 7: I think he's a very specific role player. I think
- 41:38Speaker 7: they're going to send him on. On some go routes,
- 41:41Speaker 7: they're going to take some shots with him, and he's
- 41:42Speaker 7: not going to play.
- 41:43Speaker 5: A huge amount.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Certainly.
- 41:44Speaker 5: Your guy Chisholm might play a little bit.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Certainly, Romeo Dobbs has to be better than he was
- 41:50Speaker 2: last week.
- 41:50Speaker 5: He's got to be comparable.
- 41:51Speaker 7: I'm not talking about the efficiency, because that's out of
- 41:54Speaker 7: the realm of possibility. He's not going to complete. He's
- 41:56Speaker 7: not going to catch 85% of his targets like Diggs did.
- 41:59Speaker 7: But he's got to be comparable to Diggs. He's got
- 42:02Speaker 7: to develop into something that Drake May feels really good
- 42:05Speaker 7: about throwing him the ball.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 42:07Speaker 5: And I still have faith in that. It's one bad game.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:10Speaker 5: I can overlook that.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Hunter Henry too. I just more on him. I mean,
- 42:13Speaker 1: you know, that's going to be Drake's. I think, I
- 42:15Speaker 1: think we're that hospital.
- 42:16Speaker 5: We're all the Hunter Henry still hurts me.
- 42:19Speaker 1: My kid was like, did you see Hunter Henry get
- 42:21Speaker 1: lit up? I mean, my God, I was glad he wasn't.
- 42:23Speaker 14: Could have protected him, thrown him like open on the
- 42:26Speaker 14: back shoulder so that he could duck.
- 42:27Speaker 11: I just, it was the right read. Like it was open.
- 42:30Speaker 2: It just, you know, but I, I do have a crash,
- 42:33Speaker 2: a small C concern with the loss of, because I
- 42:37Speaker 2: really thought that him being on the team is going
- 42:39Speaker 2: to raise the level of everybody else.
- 42:41Speaker 5: I think that's the point.
- 42:42Speaker 2: And he's going to open things up for everybody else.
- 42:45Speaker 2: And now you're a defense in, I hate to say it,
- 42:49Speaker 2: but are we back to becoming... Easy to defend.
- 42:52Speaker 7: Can you double someone, whether it's Hollins or Dobbs, and
- 42:56Speaker 7: then sort of live with the.
- 42:57Speaker 5: Yes, that's a concern.
- 42:59Speaker 2: I agree.
- 42:59Speaker 14: I mean, there's no doubt it's concerning to not have A.J. Brown,
- 43:02Speaker 14: but I think the hope would be that you play
- 43:05Speaker 14: a little bit more balanced, where... he's spreading the ball
- 43:08Speaker 14: around to five, six, seven different guys.
- 43:10Speaker 2: He's got to. He's got to.
- 43:11Speaker 11: Which was kind of how he played last year.
- 43:13Speaker 14: And I know Diggs was the go-to guy in passing situations,
- 43:18Speaker 14: but I think overall they'd spread the ball around pretty
- 43:22Speaker 14: well last season, and I think that that's now back
- 43:26Speaker 14: to that approach.
- 43:27Speaker 11: Just throw the ball to the open guy.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Do you think that at this point it's kind of
- 43:30Speaker 2: a good thing that Drake May doesn't really have a binky? Because,
- 43:34Speaker 2: like you said, he's never been a guy that just
- 43:37Speaker 2: focused on one guy. But this year, like you said,
- 43:41Speaker 2: he's going to have to spread it around. Otherwise, we're
- 43:45Speaker 2: going to be too easy to defend.
- 43:48Speaker 4: I hope we can say that Romeo Dobbs is becoming
- 43:50Speaker 4: his binky. I hope he shows that kind of confidence
- 43:53Speaker 4: in him. But I'm concerned. I just think it's a
- 43:55Speaker 4: lot on Drake. And to ask him to get through
- 43:58Speaker 4: all the progressions and spread the ball around... Get some
- 44:00Speaker 4: good defenses. Look, these are three AFC playoff teams. Jacksonville
- 44:04Speaker 4: next week. Blue Doors, too.
- 44:05Speaker 2: You want the bag next year? This is what you're
- 44:08Speaker 2: going to have to do, Drake. It's, you know, this
- 44:11Speaker 2: is being a franchise quarterback. And not to be a
- 44:14Speaker 2: negative Nelly, but how good is A.J. Brown going to
- 44:17Speaker 2: be when he gets back? Like, when are we looking
- 44:18Speaker 2: at A.J.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Brown, A.J. Brown?
- 44:20Speaker 4: Is that, you know, and is it going to matter?
- 44:22Speaker 4: Is it going to be enough by mid-December that, oh,
- 44:24Speaker 4: now he's rounding.
- 44:25Speaker 5: In the forms, you know?
- 44:26Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 44:27Speaker 7: That's a big injury. That's a, like, High ankle sprains
- 44:30Speaker 7: for wide receivers are no joke.
- 44:32Speaker 14: It's a big injury for the team. But I think
- 44:34Speaker 14: that They can get by if they stay balanced. If
- 44:39Speaker 14: they are now all five guys on the field are
- 44:42Speaker 14: a threat to catch the football, I think that they
- 44:45Speaker 14: can get by. They don't have that singular dominant player anymore.
- 44:49Speaker 14: They're easier to defend, no doubt about it. Like when
- 44:52Speaker 14: you're going into the Tuesday game planning meeting as the
- 44:55Speaker 14: opposing coaching staff, there's not a lot that keep you up.
- 44:59Speaker 11: At night about it.
- 45:00Speaker 14: But I don't know if they went into the season
- 45:02Speaker 14: last year and thought that the Patriots had this you know,
- 45:06Speaker 14: deep stacked receiver room and they, they were able to
- 45:10Speaker 14: figure it out.
- 45:10Speaker 2: So.
- 45:12Speaker 1: Got it going for you. No, go ahead.
- 45:15Speaker 11: Excuse me.
- 45:16Speaker 4: Do you think that you cough? Well, do you, do
- 45:21Speaker 4: you guys think though that, I mean, Paul, you kind
- 45:23Speaker 4: of hinted at this. Do you think that there'll be
- 45:24Speaker 4: more of a spike for Chisholm filling in for Matt
- 45:28Speaker 4: Collins snaps as Matt Collins maybe moves into a different role?
- 45:31Speaker 4: Or do you think there's more snaps for Kyle Williams
- 45:33Speaker 4: kind of filling that role? Are both those guys, do
- 45:36Speaker 4: you think one gets more attention?
- 45:37Speaker 7: I think Hollins is going to be the one that
- 45:39Speaker 7: gets the spike. And I think you saw it. I
- 45:43Speaker 7: think in the fourth quarter when he.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Needed a play.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. You called it. That was the guy.
- 45:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I did.
- 45:49Speaker 7: I mean, that's the only thing I got right the
- 45:51Speaker 7: whole night because nothing else went the way I thought
- 45:52Speaker 7: it was going to.
- 45:53Speaker 1: That was funny.
- 45:54Speaker 5: But when he.
- 45:55Speaker 7: Had the guy to have a play, I was like,
- 45:57Speaker 7: this is Mac Hollins because that's the guy that he
- 45:59Speaker 7: feels the most comfortable with.
- 46:01Speaker 5: Out of the people that are available.
- 46:02Speaker 11: And he was the guy getting open in the game.
- 46:04Speaker 7: He came through, but I kind of knew he was
- 46:07Speaker 7: going to be looking for Matt Collins. I think he'll
- 46:10Speaker 7: be maybe a little bit more in the A.J.
- 46:12Speaker 5: Brown role.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Less blocking?
- 46:15Speaker 5: I think Kyle Williams, would he get 12 snaps?
- 46:18Speaker 7: I don't necessarily think that that's going to raise all
- 46:21Speaker 7: that significantly. But I think they might dial him into
- 46:25Speaker 7: the offense a couple of times, and.
- 46:27Speaker 5: They didn't really do anything for him.
- 46:30Speaker 11: He was clearing out the whole night.
- 46:32Speaker 14: I think the one thing I would say with Chisholm is, like,
- 46:35Speaker 14: if teams are going to be playing 75%, 80% zone
- 46:38Speaker 14: against the Patriots.
- 46:38Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 46:42Speaker 14: Does he have a little bit better feel in the
- 46:44Speaker 14: slot for some.
- 46:45Speaker 11: Of those things?
- 46:46Speaker 2: Finding that hole.
- 46:47Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 46:47Speaker 14: And finding the soft spots and knowing how to, you know,
- 46:50Speaker 14: settle into voids. And, uh, you know, when they do
- 46:53Speaker 14: blitz from the slot, like knowing, you know, how to
- 46:55Speaker 14: get open quickly to be an option for Drake may
- 46:58Speaker 14: out of the slot. Pop is a great man coverage separator.
- 47:02Speaker 14: He's one of the best in the league in terms
- 47:04Speaker 14: of the metrics that separating against man-to-man coverage. But we
- 47:08Speaker 14: all know that he's had some of his issues against zone.
- 47:11Speaker 14: And if this is how teams are going to play them,
- 47:12Speaker 14: I wonder if Chisholm's just kind of cerebralness would be
- 47:17Speaker 14: a better fit at times in the slot. Now, there's
- 47:20Speaker 14: no doubt that Pop is a more explosive and dynamic.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Player, but.
- 47:26Speaker 14: Is there just a stylistic thing that maybe lends itself
- 47:28Speaker 14: a little bit to Chisholm?
- 47:29Speaker 5: And even just having two guys that sort of can operate.
- 47:32Speaker 17: Sure.
- 47:33Speaker 7: You know, and I agree with Evan about the man
- 47:34Speaker 7: and the zone differences with the two players. But having
- 47:37Speaker 7: two guys, you know, almost like the Edelman and Amendola.
- 47:39Speaker 7: Because I think Chisholm kind of a little bit more
- 47:42Speaker 7: Amendola to me. And maybe you get some volume from that.
- 47:47Speaker 7: Like Evan said, you're going to have to start spreading
- 47:48Speaker 7: it around a little bit because you don't have that
- 47:50Speaker 7: one guy.
- 47:52Speaker 5: So maybe it's strength in numbers.
- 47:54Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 47:54Speaker 2: All right, so health-wise, A.J. Brown out. Spillane was not
- 47:59Speaker 2: at practice yesterday?
- 48:00Speaker 1: No, but he talked. I think that might be the
- 48:02Speaker 1: main thing. Because we need him.
- 48:05Speaker 2: I think he had a good game.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Lead them.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Well, maybe not in coverage, but he was filling. Run
- 48:13Speaker 2: fits was pretty good.
- 48:15Speaker 11: That scramble, the 14-yard scramble was tough.
- 48:17Speaker 2: Well, he's not fit.
- 48:19Speaker 11: But the the okay.
- 48:22Speaker 7: He was he was finally he wasn't why they lost
- 48:24Speaker 7: he wasn't terrible yeah i don't want to make that
- 48:26Speaker 7: i just i think.
- 48:27Speaker 18: It's a great game you need them no yeah you
- 48:30Speaker 18: don't have anybody but uh but travion was back out
- 48:33Speaker 18: there yesterday and ben brown was back out there which
- 48:35Speaker 18: was you know good sign um and just a bonus
- 48:38Speaker 18: day for the patriots you.
- 48:39Speaker 4: Know i mean usually monday you're wrapping things up you're
- 48:42Speaker 4: putting a pin on or putting a bow on last
- 48:43Speaker 4: game so Hopefully they got something out of that session yesterday.
- 48:46Speaker 2: All right, so let's go to the phones, 855-PASS-500. But
- 48:50Speaker 2: before I do, programming note. Starting next week, starting next week,
- 48:57Speaker 2: we have a new time for Patriots Unfiltered. Obviously, we're
- 49:01Speaker 2: now in our in-season, Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. But we're
- 49:05Speaker 2: going to be going from 11 to 1 every day.
- 49:09Speaker 2: instead of 12 to 2. And the reason for that
- 49:12Speaker 2: is the schedule of the Patriots practice in availability in
- 49:16Speaker 2: the locker room. We need to get Paul into the
- 49:18Speaker 2: locker room. So the locker room opens up at around 115.
- 49:25Speaker 2: So we're going to be going 11 to 1 Tuesday, Wednesdays,
- 49:29Speaker 2: and Thursdays for Patriots Unfiltered. Catch 22. It's going to
- 49:33Speaker 2: change up. Now, have you talked to your counterpart yet?
- 49:35Speaker 11: I did talk to him.
- 49:36Speaker 2: And is he amenable to this?
- 49:38Speaker 11: Yeah, we might need to, like, you know, get.
- 49:42Speaker 1: A sweet talk him a little bit.
- 49:43Speaker 2: The plan for Catch-22 is instead of one show for
- 49:48Speaker 2: two hours on Wednesdays, we're going to do two shows
- 49:52Speaker 2: for one hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 11. So, Catch-22,
- 49:56Speaker 2: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 to 11. And Evan is really
- 50:04Speaker 2: excited about this because he's going to treat Tuesdays as
- 50:07Speaker 2: your recap show and Thursday as your preview show. And
- 50:11Speaker 2: they can dedicate that and they don't have to switch
- 50:14Speaker 2: gears in the middle of the show. Catch 22, 10
- 50:18Speaker 2: to 11, Tuesdays and Thursdays. P.U., 11 to 1, Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 50:24Speaker 2: and Thursday.
- 50:25Speaker 14: Yeah, I'm still working on Barth because Tuesday, he doesn't
- 50:29Speaker 14: come here normally on Tuesdays.
- 50:31Speaker 11: But I think that for in the long run. What
- 50:32Speaker 11: else has he got to do? Right, seriously.
- 50:34Speaker 5: Is he hanging out with his girlfriend?
- 50:35Speaker 11: Wow.
- 50:36Speaker 1: There's no college football on Tuesday.
- 50:37Speaker 14: I think in the long run, this will be better
- 50:39Speaker 14: for Catch 22, though, because of what Fred said.
- 50:42Speaker 7: I thought you were going to say what Paul said.
- 50:44Speaker 14: Preview show recap show twice a week being, you know,
- 50:49Speaker 14: we're usually like one foot in one door, one foot
- 50:51Speaker 14: in the other. It's kind of confusing. So this will
- 50:54Speaker 14: be a, this will kind of be more efficient.
- 50:56Speaker 10: Yep.
- 50:57Speaker 13: Okay.
- 50:58Speaker 2: So I just wanted to do that before we get
- 51:00Speaker 2: to the phones. 855-PATS-500. Phones are stacked up. Now, Paul,
- 51:03Speaker 2: did you get into it with someone, one of our callers?
- 51:07Speaker 5: Generally, yes. I mean, I don't know who you're talking about.
- 51:11Speaker 5: My answer will just be yes.
- 51:12Speaker 2: It's Christian in L.A. What's up, Christian?
- 51:15Speaker 16: Hey, you guys.
- 51:16Speaker 9: Hey, you guys. Hey, you guys.
- 51:18Speaker 6: Hey, Fred, welcome.
- 51:19Speaker 9: And welcome to week two of the NFL.
- 51:22Speaker 8: So as they say, you know, week one is a liar.
- 51:25Speaker 9: Week two, hopefully you catch fire.
- 51:27Speaker 8: I was angry the other day, but I didn't put
- 51:30Speaker 8: too much stock into it. I re-looked at the game.
- 51:32Speaker 8: For me, everything for the season boils down to what
- 51:36Speaker 8: I thought was the good and the bad from the game. Yes, Paul,
- 51:38Speaker 8: you and I got into it. Yes, we will once again.
- 51:41Speaker 9: The good was this. For me, guys, we didn't get out-talented.
- 51:46Speaker 8: We didn't get out-talented.
- 51:48Speaker 9: We didn't get out-muscled.
- 51:49Speaker 8: We probably got out-disciplined and probably out-prepared for that particular game.
- 51:54Speaker 8: But we didn't get out-talented because even with the loss
- 51:58Speaker 8: of A.J. Brown, even with the, I guess, that undisciplined
- 52:02Speaker 8: play and maybe the questionable play calling of Josh and
- 52:05Speaker 8: even the two interceptions of Drake May, with less than
- 52:08Speaker 8: a minute left, we were in position to win the game.
- 52:12Speaker 8: And that's got to say something about just the makeup
- 52:15Speaker 8: in general and the constitution of this team. It doesn't
- 52:18Speaker 8: say anything about the discipline of it. It doesn't say
- 52:20Speaker 8: anything about anything else. But it says something about the
- 52:22Speaker 8: constitution of the team.
- 52:23Speaker 15: That, to me, was the good.
- 52:26Speaker 8: Here comes the bad, and this is where, Paul, you
- 52:28Speaker 8: and I are going to get into it because I'm
- 52:29Speaker 8: going back to the well. The man in charge of
- 52:33Speaker 8: this team is supposed to have the future of this
- 52:37Speaker 8: team and the future player of this team as his
- 52:40Speaker 8: best and only focus and interest.
- 52:42Speaker 9: It is very clear.
- 52:43Speaker 8: Now after game one that the unfocused, distracted, undisciplined Mike Rabel,
- 52:50Speaker 8: instead of choosing a backup tackle in the draft, should
- 52:54Speaker 8: have known that the future of this team is running
- 52:56Speaker 8: the ball, as you guys said, when the team's trying
- 52:58Speaker 8: to play too high safety against us, and he should
- 53:00Speaker 8: have taken the biggest, meanest, nastiest run-blocking.
- 53:04Speaker 9: Guard that he could have got in the offseason. Once again,
- 53:08Speaker 9: the undisciplined, unfocused Mike Bray.
- 53:11Speaker 11: No, stop.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Undisciplined, unfocused. I think you're being a little dramatic, Christian.
- 53:16Speaker 2: I mean, honestly.
- 53:17Speaker 13: No, no, no.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Honestly.
- 53:18Speaker 5: This is what the answer is. You're right.
- 53:22Speaker 6: No, no.
- 53:22Speaker 5: That's what he wants.
- 53:22Speaker 1: No, no.
- 53:23Speaker 5: He's just giving what he wants.
- 53:24Speaker 2: Listen, you can make the argument you don't like to pick,
- 53:27Speaker 2: but because he's undisciplined and unfocused?
- 53:31Speaker 15: No.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 53:32Speaker 2: First of all... Elliot Wolfe has as much to do
- 53:36Speaker 2: with that as anyone else. And I think all his
- 53:38Speaker 2: focus was on the draft. That's all he was focused on. So,
- 53:41Speaker 2: and come on, let's not be overdramatic, but I do
- 53:44Speaker 2: like his first point. The fact is the team was
- 53:48Speaker 2: in position to win the game at the end.
- 53:50Speaker 5: They were driving the other team's quarterback out.
- 53:52Speaker 2: They were certainly already in field goal range to tie it.
- 53:56Speaker 2: And I think they were set up to, to go
- 53:58Speaker 2: the distance had, you know, the interception not happened. So I, I,
- 54:03Speaker 2: That is encouraging, right?
- 54:05Speaker 14: Yeah, besides the preamble about Mike Vrabel putting that to
- 54:09Speaker 14: the side for a second, I kind of agree with
- 54:12Speaker 14: his Caleb Lomu point, and I said.
- 54:14Speaker 1: It at the time.
- 54:15Speaker 5: Oh, you've always been on that point.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Like I said, you can argue the pick.
- 54:18Speaker 11: I'm arguing the pick, to be clear.
- 54:21Speaker 14: Their first-round pick was sitting on the sideline with his
- 54:24Speaker 14: helmet off for the entire game. Their first-round pick was
- 54:27Speaker 14: their lead running back. Both these teams picked at the
- 54:30Speaker 14: end of the first round. So you're telling me that
- 54:35Speaker 14: who they drafted in the first round, if they hadn't
- 54:38Speaker 14: drafted a project long-term play in Caleb Lomu, couldn't have
- 54:43Speaker 14: helped them in that game on Wednesday?
- 54:45Speaker 2: You might be singing another tune if Morgan Moses gets hurt, right?
- 54:49Speaker 14: Okay, so in case of injury, we have this guy
- 54:52Speaker 14: waiting in the wings is what we're going with.
- 54:53Speaker 2: No, but it's not just that. We've got a guy who...
- 54:56Speaker 2: How old is Morgan Moses?
- 54:58Speaker 11: 35.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Okay.
- 55:00Speaker 2: That's why.
- 55:02Speaker 11: I understand why they did it.
- 55:04Speaker 14: I understand that they're doing it as a succession plan
- 55:06Speaker 14: to Morgan Moses and all that stuff. Paul and I,
- 55:09Speaker 14: at the time, this isn't revisionist history. This is what
- 55:12Speaker 14: we were saying in April. We're saying that this roster
- 55:15Speaker 14: is not ready for... like luxury picks, like taking tackles
- 55:20Speaker 14: or looking ahead, you know, like this isn't looking ahead.
- 55:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 55:24Speaker 11: You know, they, that, that's a luxury pick.
- 55:26Speaker 14: They picked it in order to, they already had two
- 55:28Speaker 14: starters at tackle. They picked the third tackle in the
- 55:31Speaker 14: first round is something that bill Belichick used to do
- 55:34Speaker 14: when they were going to the super bowl every year
- 55:36Speaker 14: and winning 14 games and deuce got bored.
- 55:38Speaker 1: You know, like that, that, that was.
- 55:40Speaker 7: What fairness was 12 and four.
- 55:43Speaker 14: That's what they were doing in the peak of the
- 55:44Speaker 14: dynasty was drafting Nate Solder. Not one year into rebuilding
- 55:51Speaker 14: the roster.
- 55:52Speaker 4: No, it's fair, and I wouldn't have gone with a guard,
- 55:55Speaker 4: but I'd even look along the defensive line right now
- 55:58Speaker 4: where you finally went out and signed Daquan Jones, but
- 56:02Speaker 4: I think they do have a lot of different needs.
- 56:05Speaker 4: I'm not lamenting the Lomo pick as well because I
- 56:07Speaker 4: feel like he's going to be in there sooner than later,
- 56:08Speaker 4: and I feel like we're on borrowed time with Morgan
- 56:10Speaker 4: Moses as it is, but I get the point.
- 56:13Speaker 7: And I understood, and I still understand why they picked Lomo.
- 56:18Speaker 7: They felt like they needed to tackle both for the
- 56:21Speaker 7: possible presence in the future. So I understand why. I
- 56:25Speaker 7: think I probably would have gone in a different direction,
- 56:27Speaker 7: but I understand the mindset. I know what they were thinking. And,
- 56:32Speaker 7: you know, I don't know. I mean, I have to
- 56:36Speaker 7: go back and look specifically. I don't know what else
- 56:38Speaker 7: was available. Would they be happy if they took Price,
- 56:43Speaker 7: the running back that had a good game? I would
- 56:46Speaker 7: say not a great game, but a good game for Seattle.
- 56:49Speaker 7: I don't know that people would have been... I certainly
- 56:51Speaker 7: don't think people would have been happy if they took
- 56:52Speaker 7: a guard.
- 56:54Speaker 16: No.
- 56:54Speaker 14: I'm more talking about just the overall impact that that
- 56:57Speaker 14: player could have made.
- 56:59Speaker 2: On the team.
- 57:00Speaker 5: And that's very fair.
- 57:00Speaker 7: I just think that I understand that they don't look
- 57:03Speaker 7: at it as like, My goal isn't to get a
- 57:05Speaker 7: guy who's going to make an immediate impact in week
- 57:07Speaker 7: one of his rookie year.
- 57:08Speaker 5: My goal is to get the best player. Yeah, right.
- 57:10Speaker 1: Who fits our style of play, too. And that's, you know,
- 57:12Speaker 1: I think the low move. I don't know.
- 57:14Speaker 5: No, well, that's certainly open for interpretation.
- 57:18Speaker 4: I know that that's the point I'm trying to make
- 57:20Speaker 4: is that it's a little bit feels like a little
- 57:22Speaker 4: bit of a stretch because.
- 57:23Speaker 1: He was the last guy.
- 57:24Speaker 4: Left, and he's not exactly the glass-eating kind of dude
- 57:27Speaker 4: we want. I mean, Will Campbell, his personality, that's a
- 57:30Speaker 4: Mike Vrabel guy through and through. And nothing against Lomo.
- 57:32Speaker 4: I think he could still be a good player. But,
- 57:34Speaker 4: you know, I think, though, if they had taken, say,
- 57:36Speaker 4: a defensive lineman, that you're like, that's not a big need.
- 57:40Speaker 1: He's one of their dudes.
- 57:42Speaker 7: Speaking of defensive linemen, did you happen to see the
- 57:44Speaker 7: fullback last night for the Chiefs? Same fullback that the
- 57:47Speaker 7: Patriots had last year. Tonga got a couple of snaps.
- 57:50Speaker 1: I didn't see that. I missed that.
- 57:52Speaker 2: You mentioned Daquan Jones. They signed him after the first game.
- 57:57Speaker 2: Why do you think they waited? Or is there something
- 58:00Speaker 2: that they saw... Is there some evidence that they saw
- 58:03Speaker 2: in the game and say, okay, we need to do this?
- 58:05Speaker 2: I'll let Mike take it. Not guaranteed salary. He's not
- 58:09Speaker 2: on the roster. Week one's a part of it.
- 58:12Speaker 4: I didn't need to see week one to think that
- 58:14Speaker 4: they needed another 320-pound guy on the roster.
- 58:17Speaker 1: I think we've been waiting for it to happen.
- 58:20Speaker 7: In fairness, I think that money might have had something
- 58:25Speaker 7: to do with it, but I think the bigger thing
- 58:27Speaker 7: was I think they wanted to see do we have
- 58:31Speaker 7: these solutions on our roster? Is Corey Durden, Joshua Farmer,
- 58:37Speaker 7: Lenny T, are these guys good enough? Because ideally, you
- 58:41Speaker 7: want those guys to fill those roles. Young guys that
- 58:45Speaker 7: you've developed, right? And I think they saw in week one,
- 58:50Speaker 7: were probably not good enough in those roles, because I
- 58:52Speaker 7: thought they did get run on in this game, and
- 58:56Speaker 7: I would have been curious to see how well they
- 58:58Speaker 7: ran throughout if they had the ability to throw the ball.
- 59:01Speaker 2: Do you think he's going to be available for this week, Jones?
- 59:04Speaker 11: I think so.
- 59:04Speaker 14: He played for Vrabel in Tennessee for three years.
- 59:07Speaker 2: I just mean physically.
- 59:10Speaker 11: Yeah, I don't know.
- 59:11Speaker 5: They worked him out a while ago, too. My guess
- 59:14Speaker 5: is that he's been.
- 59:15Speaker 1: They're not going to need that much out of him, too.
- 59:17Speaker 1: He can be a very specific kind of player this week.
- 59:21Speaker 14: I think we talk a lot about depth as in
- 59:23Speaker 14: injury depth in case of injury, but the good defensive
- 59:27Speaker 14: lines have.
- 59:28Speaker 11: hockey lines.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Of guys, especially Seattle. Right.
- 59:32Speaker 14: And so I think that's the biggest issue with the
- 59:34Speaker 14: Patriots defensive line is that Milton Williams and Christian Barmore
- 59:38Speaker 14: are your two studs and they got to play a
- 59:40Speaker 14: lot to, in order to really have an impact on
- 59:43Speaker 14: the game. Uh, I feel like they could have a
- 59:46Speaker 14: bigger impact if maybe they could play a little bit
- 59:48Speaker 14: less and rotate a little bit more inside. I don't
- 59:52Speaker 14: think they feel great about their depth to be able
- 59:54Speaker 14: to rotate those guys more. So I think a guy
- 59:57Speaker 14: like Daquan Jones can now rotate with Corey Durden. Now
- 1:00:00Speaker 14: you kind of have four guys maybe that you feel
- 1:00:02Speaker 14: good about inside that can rotate and take some of.
- 1:00:05Speaker 11: The load off of those two.
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: Kind of like your thing with the old Patriots was
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: a six for four at the linebacker position.
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: They had three inside guys and three outside guys back.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: When they were truly a 3-4.
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: It's a good mix of draft picks, veterans.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: That's the point they've got to get back to.
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: All right, phones are burning up here. Merv is in Connecticut.
- 1:00:24Speaker 11: What's up, Merv?
- 1:00:26Speaker 17: Hey, gentlemen.
- 1:00:26Speaker 19: How we doing?
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Hey, Merv.
- 1:00:30Speaker 19: First thing, people have got to stop thinking that Caleb
- 1:00:32Speaker 19: Lomu is a first-round pick. Lomu is a reach pick.
- 1:00:38Speaker 19: And he was a third-round talent. And once again, this
- 1:00:42Speaker 19: entire franchise waited until the last possible moment instead of
- 1:00:47Speaker 19: trading up to get.
- 1:00:48Speaker 9: An actual tackle at that spot.
- 1:00:51Speaker 19: The second point I want to make is this goes
- 1:00:53Speaker 19: back to probably the second half of last year's second
- 1:00:58Speaker 19: Bills game and Drake May having a difficult time with
- 1:01:03Speaker 19: cover six. The entire first half, first three quarters... They
- 1:01:08Speaker 19: didn't show a lot of cover six. And then, of course,
- 1:01:11Speaker 19: in the fourth quarter, Seattle pulled out all the stops,
- 1:01:14Speaker 19: went cover six, and that's when all the problems happened.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:01:20Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: Thanks, Murph.
- 1:01:21Speaker 14: Definitely in the blueprint, part of the blueprint that teams
- 1:01:25Speaker 14: are using. And I don't know what it is because
- 1:01:28Speaker 14: his numbers against cover two and his numbers against quarters
- 1:01:31Speaker 14: are both pretty good. But then when they play cover six,
- 1:01:34Speaker 14: which is a combination of quarters and cover two, it's
- 1:01:37Speaker 14: They're not good. So it doesn't make sense to me
- 1:01:40Speaker 14: why that is.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: Explain the difference between cover six and quarters.
- 1:01:45Speaker 14: So cover six is quarter, quarter, half. So one side
- 1:01:48Speaker 14: of the field is playing it like quarters. The other
- 1:01:50Speaker 14: side of the field is playing it like cover two.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: And when you say quarters, what does that mean?
- 1:01:54Speaker 14: Cover four, quarters, four deep across the field. So one
- 1:01:57Speaker 14: side of the field is quarters. So they have the
- 1:01:59Speaker 14: corners playing a fourth and the safety is playing a fourth.
- 1:02:02Speaker 14: The other side of the field is quarters. cover two
- 1:02:05Speaker 14: so the half field safety is over the top of
- 1:02:07Speaker 14: that side and the corner is playing in the flat
- 1:02:10Speaker 14: so they're clouding one side of the field by having
- 1:02:13Speaker 14: the flat corner uh have a safety behind him so
- 1:02:16Speaker 14: like let's say you know he obviously didn't play and
- 1:02:19Speaker 14: isn't going to play moving forward but they can cloud
- 1:02:21Speaker 14: aj brown side of the field and have a safety
- 1:02:24Speaker 14: over the top of aj brown and they can play
- 1:02:26Speaker 14: quarters to the other side of the field of the
- 1:02:28Speaker 14: passing strain so it just really is like a one
- 1:02:32Speaker 14: side's quarters, one side's cover too. That's the easiest way
- 1:02:35Speaker 14: to think about it. And for some reason, it's been
- 1:02:37Speaker 14: a kryptonite of Drake Mays. Like his numbers against it
- 1:02:40Speaker 14: are some of the worst in the league. Last year,
- 1:02:43Speaker 14: it was 32nd out of 33 quarterbacks in EPA.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: So as a quarterback, is it possible to recognize what's
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: happening there? You know, Or is it really difficult for
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: any quarterback to see that difference?
- 1:02:56Speaker 14: Yeah, it's definitely possible. I think the problem that you
- 1:03:00Speaker 14: run into when you play... teams that play cover six
- 1:03:04Speaker 14: is that you have to guess right of which side
- 1:03:06Speaker 14: of the field they're playing, which coverage. And then you
- 1:03:08Speaker 14: have to hope that you have a concept that beats
- 1:03:10Speaker 14: that coverage. So like, it's a, it's a, it's a
- 1:03:13Speaker 14: game of dice, right? Of like, okay, not only do
- 1:03:15Speaker 14: we have to anticipate that we're there, you might call
- 1:03:17Speaker 14: cover six. We also have to figure out which side
- 1:03:20Speaker 14: of the field is the quarter side and which side
- 1:03:22Speaker 14: of the field is the cover two side. And do
- 1:03:24Speaker 14: we have a concept to that side that beats that coverage?
- 1:03:27Speaker 14: A lot of times, like you kind of just, In
- 1:03:30Speaker 14: my opinion, unless they're going to really start spamming cover
- 1:03:32Speaker 14: six and play it like 20 times a game, you
- 1:03:35Speaker 14: kind of just need to check the ball down and
- 1:03:37Speaker 14: live to say another play.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: I was just going to say, go underneath.
- 1:03:39Speaker 14: Yeah, like, okay, so they got us on this one.
- 1:03:42Speaker 14: How can we profit? How can we maximize the profit
- 1:03:46Speaker 14: here and just move on to the next play? It's
- 1:03:49Speaker 14: been their issue, though.
- 1:03:50Speaker 11: It's been their kryptonite, no doubt.
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: How much of it is, though, and this might be
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: hard to tell, is it they're just playing cover six,
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: but they're actually getting to it And it's not just
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: that they're playing cover six, but he's having trouble breaking
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: down the rotation.
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: I saw one breakdown for one of Evan's acolytes talking
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: about they did a good job of disguising it, make
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: it look like cover six on the second interception, the
- 1:04:17Speaker 7: DeMario Douglas one.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: It was cover six.
- 1:04:20Speaker 7: And they thought that Julian Love just made a really
- 1:04:23Speaker 7: instinctive play on that.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of that going on.
- 1:04:26Speaker 14: So I would say that this was a very good
- 1:04:28Speaker 14: ball-knower debate of whether or not that was three-cloud or
- 1:04:32Speaker 14: that was cover six, and we were going back and
- 1:04:34Speaker 14: forth about this for, like, days.
- 1:04:36Speaker 11: I think we all settled that it.
- 1:04:38Speaker 20: Wild parties i think we all settled on this being
- 1:04:42Speaker 20: cover six we talked to some of the guys yesterday
- 1:04:44Speaker 20: about it they all felt like it was cover six
- 1:04:46Speaker 20: as well and in this particular coverage uh julian love
- 1:04:51Speaker 20: was playing what's called a poach technique so his eyes
- 1:04:54Speaker 20: are actually inside to the other side of the formation
- 1:04:57Speaker 20: and his responsibility is a crossing route coming from the
- 1:05:00Speaker 20: other side of the formation So he's sitting there with
- 1:05:03Speaker 20: his eyes on pop Douglas, just reading pop Douglas's release
- 1:05:07Speaker 20: of where he's going to go.
- 1:05:08Speaker 11: And he's just jumping that route.
- 1:05:10Speaker 14: And so in Drake may through it, he was just
- 1:05:13Speaker 14: read him like a book and was all over it.
- 1:05:14Speaker 14: So it's, it's, It's something that I don't really have
- 1:05:17Speaker 14: a great answer to. I actually asked Brian Hoyer about
- 1:05:20Speaker 14: it for the piece that I wrote about Drake going
- 1:05:22Speaker 14: into the season. Like, what would you do against cover six?
- 1:05:25Speaker 14: And he gave me the answer of, I'd kind of
- 1:05:27Speaker 14: just live another day. Like, if I see that, like,
- 1:05:29Speaker 14: just take the open, you know, check down and let's
- 1:05:32Speaker 14: just move on to the next play.
- 1:05:33Speaker 11: They got us on this one.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: I see some of those ball-knower parties, like, almost like
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: the framers of the Constitution, you know, debating the Constitution.
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: I see.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: You know, that same type of intensity with their gatherings.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: It was a great conversation.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: Where do these take place? Whose basement do these take place?
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: Whose mother's basement do these take place in?
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: Are there snacks?
- 1:05:55Speaker 14: I would say that they start in the group chat, right?
- 1:05:59Speaker 14: The group chats pop in.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: This is virtual.
- 1:06:02Speaker 14: Yeah, so this is like going on while we're all
- 1:06:04Speaker 14: watching Y'all 22.
- 1:06:06Speaker 11: And then they usually continue in.
- 1:06:08Speaker 14: The locker room and the media work room and stuff
- 1:06:10Speaker 14: like that once we get back.
- 1:06:11Speaker 11: Boots on the ground.
- 1:06:12Speaker 14: And then usually me and Taylor, Kyle's, we just look
- 1:06:16Speaker 14: at each other.
- 1:06:16Speaker 11: And go, why don't we just go ask?
- 1:06:18Speaker 14: So then we just go up to the players and
- 1:06:19Speaker 14: then we, Hey, this is what everybody's talking about.
- 1:06:22Speaker 11: Like, what do you guys see? And then usually they
- 1:06:24Speaker 11: give us, you know, their, their two cents.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: All right. We'll do one more call. Then we'll take
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: a break. I see you, Brian, Marty, Todd, Ben, but
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: we're going to go to Eldred before the break. If
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: I can get this damn cursor to work. What's going on? Oh,
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: there we go.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Eldred, what's going on?
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: Hey, nice.
- 1:06:45Speaker 9: Hey, fellas.
- 1:06:45Speaker 16: How y'all doing?
- 1:06:46Speaker 13: Good.
- 1:06:46Speaker 11: What's up, Big E?
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:06:49Speaker 16: Evan, you're going to get mad at me. I don't care.
- 1:06:52Speaker 16: That was North Carolina Drake May Wednesday night.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:06:56Speaker 16: It should have been 31. It should have been 31
- 1:06:58Speaker 16: to 13. Because you had three touchdowns. You underthrew Brown.
- 1:07:03Speaker 16: And if he hit up, when he threw that last
- 1:07:05Speaker 16: touchdown to Matt Collins, Pop breaking across the middle, wide open,
- 1:07:09Speaker 16: nobody there.
- 1:07:10Speaker 11: He ain't wide open.
- 1:07:11Speaker 9: Your boy Nick Cato.
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: Oh, I'm going to ignore that then.
- 1:07:15Speaker 7: I just wanted, you know, these little things are sticklers
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: for me.
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: Okay, so if he doesn't underthrow A.J. Brown.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:24Speaker 9: That's a touchdown.
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: How many more points do they have?
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: None.
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: Thank you, Fred.
- 1:07:27Speaker 19: Seven.
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: You've passed the test.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: No, they got the seven.
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: On the very next play, they scored a touchdown. Because
- 1:07:33Speaker 7: the ball got moved to the two-yard line.
- 1:07:35Speaker 16: Because they got the P.I.
- 1:07:37Speaker 9: Right. But instead of the P.I., they had seven.
- 1:07:39Speaker 7: No, but they got seven anyway. You can only get
- 1:07:42Speaker 7: seven on a possession.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Or eight. On that possession, they got a touchdown.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: So they didn't lose it. The very next play, they
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: scored a touchdown. They didn't lose out any points on that. Yeah,
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: because he.
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: Got the P.I.
- 1:07:53Speaker 16: If he didn't overthrow, if he didn't underthrow Brown, it
- 1:07:55Speaker 16: would have been a touchdown and end zone.
- 1:07:57Speaker 7: Right. I know, but that doesn't give you 14 points, Eldred.
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: You said they should have been 31 points.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: They still would have had the same amount of points
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: on that possession.
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: If they just kicked a field goal on the last drive. Yeah.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: I see what you're saying.
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: You can't just add random touchdowns.
- 1:08:14Speaker 16: Okay, I just gave you another one. Instead of throwing
- 1:08:18Speaker 16: to Matt Collins, you should have thrown to Pop.
- 1:08:21Speaker 11: He's not open, Eldridge. He's not open.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: He was, too.
- 1:08:24Speaker 14: Eldridge, they're dropping zone defenders. He's running a slant right
- 1:08:27Speaker 14: into the linebacker, dude.
- 1:08:29Speaker 11: He's not open.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: He's not that way.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: But I hear what you're saying, because a lot of
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: people have said the same thing you said, that this
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: was North Carolina Drake May. This was not coming out
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: of him in Carolina.
- 1:08:43Speaker 11: Yeah, different argument.
- 1:08:45Speaker 14: But I've seen the pop thing going around, like we're
- 1:08:48Speaker 14: screenshotting it when Drake May is like, yeah, right, let's
- 1:08:52Speaker 14: layer it in there like this is Madden, and we
- 1:08:54Speaker 14: can just make it, it's not open.
- 1:08:56Speaker 16: I didn't say it's Madden, dog.
- 1:08:58Speaker 11: It's not open.
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: It's not open.
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: The Drake May North Carolina thing has definitely made the rounds.
- 1:09:04Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:09:06Speaker 16: When he was throwing the pop at the interception, all
- 1:09:08Speaker 16: they do is hit Steve on the corner.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: He was wide open.
- 1:09:11Speaker 9: But he didn't.
- 1:09:12Speaker 16: Like I said, he got impatient.
- 1:09:14Speaker 9: He does that sometimes.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: The ball is a great quarterback. I've got to give
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: it to him.
- 1:09:17Speaker 16: But sometimes, like you said, he's just got to take
- 1:09:19Speaker 16: the chance.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: We've got to beat that out of him. We've got
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: to do that. All right, thanks, Eldred. I'm hungry. I've
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: got to eat.
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: You know what I think he hates the most?
- 1:09:26Speaker 11: Thanks, Ian.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 1:09:29Speaker 7: I think he hates throwing the ball away, almost more
- 1:09:31Speaker 7: than anything. He's even taken sacks instead of throwing them.
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: He took one the other day. The other day. Now
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: it's like eight weeks ago, it feels like.
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: I know.

- 1:12:50Speaker 13: Mass General Brigham.
- 1:12:52Speaker 24: I mean, we're looking at, you know, trying to install
- 1:12:54Speaker 24: here and, you know, putting guys in spots that are,
- 1:12:57Speaker 24: you know, best for them and best for us. And so,
- 1:13:00Speaker 24: you know, I don't know how much we want to
- 1:13:02Speaker 24: tweak things. We'll go through our game plan and, you know,
- 1:13:06Speaker 24: just like we did when AJ was out there, it
- 1:13:08Speaker 24: was sometimes he was the X, sometimes he was the F, uh, Z,
- 1:13:12Speaker 24: you know what I mean? We'll have to move guys around, uh,
- 1:13:15Speaker 24: different positions.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:13:17Speaker 17: I heard you mention on the radio today that talking
- 1:13:20Speaker 17: about Drake, I believe in something about you can't get
- 1:13:23Speaker 17: bored doing things, right?
- 1:13:25Speaker 24: Well, just the little things you can't get bored. Um,
- 1:13:28Speaker 24: you know, taking what they give you. Um, and that goes,
- 1:13:33Speaker 24: that goes for everybody. I mean, we're, we're, big fundamental
- 1:13:36Speaker 24: emphasis here today uh technique has got to improve you
- 1:13:41Speaker 24: know all these little things that uh can can help
- 1:13:44Speaker 24: you win football games so um you know if the
- 1:13:47Speaker 24: defense you know gives you something and the ball is
- 1:13:49Speaker 24: supposed to go somewhere then then then put the ball
- 1:13:52Speaker 24: there and if we're supposed to be you know a
- 1:13:56Speaker 24: look where we're supposed to can the play then then
- 1:13:58Speaker 24: can it or alert it or whatever that may be
- 1:14:00Speaker 24: defensively you know our checks and everything else and build
- 1:14:04Speaker 24: on some of the good stuff on special teams.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: How are A.J. 's spirits?
- 1:14:08Speaker 11: How's he handling the disappointment?
- 1:14:10Speaker 24: Everybody's disappointed for him, and he's disappointed. He wants to play.
- 1:14:16Speaker 24: He's a competitor, and we'll have to get him back
- 1:14:20Speaker 24: as quickly as possible, obviously the four-game window, and make
- 1:14:23Speaker 24: sure that he's ready to go mentally and physically when
- 1:14:26Speaker 24: he does get back.
- 1:14:27Speaker 6: What did you guys see in Daquan?
- 1:14:28Speaker 10: Good question.
- 1:14:32Speaker 24: I think we've had some experience with him in Tennessee.
- 1:14:35Speaker 24: We got to see him most recently in Buffalo. I
- 1:14:39Speaker 24: think a veteran interior player that I think still has
- 1:14:44Speaker 24: some good snaps.
- 1:14:45Speaker 17: Ahead of him.
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: Travion Henderson?
- 1:14:49Speaker 24: They'll probably do some stuff today, yeah. Ben and Travion
- 1:14:53Speaker 24: will probably try to do some stuff today.
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: And see where they are.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: Was that a top element?
- 1:14:59Speaker 7: I know Romandre played a lot of snaps the other night.
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: I was not having was that a tough kind of
- 1:15:03Speaker 7: element to not be without i guess.
- 1:15:05Speaker 24: We kind of knew what it might have been and
- 1:15:08Speaker 24: we'll have to be prepared for you know a lot
- 1:15:10Speaker 24: of guys throughout the season that aren't out there um
- 1:15:14Speaker 24: and you just got to get the guys ready that
- 1:15:16Speaker 24: that's step up in their place and but obviously we
- 1:15:19Speaker 24: would love to have travian we'd love to have everybody.
- 1:15:22Speaker 19: I'm curious how you might be able to generate some
- 1:15:24Speaker 19: more interceptions when you look at it is there a
- 1:15:27Speaker 19: common denominator or sort of a common thread that you
- 1:15:29Speaker 19: can pinpoint in order to move?
- 1:15:31Speaker 24: We always talk about working together to create ball disruption. And,
- 1:15:35Speaker 24: you know, one, we can catch, you know what I mean?
- 1:15:37Speaker 24: Gonzo can catch the one that he, you know, had
- 1:15:41Speaker 24: a great play on. He knows that. I mean, that's
- 1:15:44Speaker 24: not a secret. You could tip some balls at the
- 1:15:47Speaker 24: line of scrimmage. You know, that's one place to start.
- 1:15:50Speaker 24: Those usually get intercepted. We talk about those all the time.
- 1:15:54Speaker 24: you can force the quarterback to get rid of it
- 1:15:57Speaker 24: maybe a little quicker than he would want or then
- 1:16:00Speaker 24: have the ability to, in zone coverage, break on the ball. And, again,
- 1:16:05Speaker 24: where the rush and the coverage marry, and we've talked
- 1:16:08Speaker 24: about this quite a bit, but the whole idea of
- 1:16:12Speaker 24: working together to create ball disruption, somebody making a tackle,
- 1:16:15Speaker 24: somebody coming in and hammering and all those different things
- 1:16:19Speaker 24: that we want to try to do.
- 1:16:21Speaker 15: What type of things, if any, do you say to
- 1:16:23Speaker 15: him after maybe a less-than-ideal start?
- 1:16:26Speaker 24: Drop the pass. I mean, guys, everybody drops the pass.
- 1:16:30Speaker 24: Everybody misses a tackle. You talk to him the same
- 1:16:34Speaker 24: way you always talk to him, like figure out a
- 1:16:36Speaker 24: way to make a play to help us win and
- 1:16:38Speaker 24: did a lot of great things during camp just like
- 1:16:40Speaker 24: a lot of everybody did.
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: And so.
- 1:16:44Speaker 24: I know he's excited to get back out there and
- 1:16:46Speaker 24: get to work and to find a way to help
- 1:16:47Speaker 24: us win. Mike, do you have anything to add?
- 1:16:51Speaker 11: Some of the rookies, some of the young players showing
- 1:16:53Speaker 11: up and playing well on Wednesday.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: Are there any other things? Not well enough.
- 1:16:56Speaker 24: Nobody did anything well enough for us to win, but
- 1:16:58Speaker 24: I appreciate it. Again, it was good to see them
- 1:17:01Speaker 24: out there. When we lose, everybody can coach a little
- 1:17:04Speaker 24: better and everybody can play.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: A little better.
- 1:17:06Speaker 24: But go ahead.
- 1:17:06Speaker 25: I'm sorry to interrupt.
- 1:17:07Speaker 11: Were there other things that jumped out to you and said, like, oh,
- 1:17:09Speaker 11: I like this?
- 1:17:10Speaker 24: And again, knowing you didn't win the game, were there
- 1:17:12Speaker 24: other elements of your play that you liked on Wednesday that.
- 1:17:15Speaker 11: Stood out to you?
- 1:17:18Speaker 24: Well, I mean, I think that to go out there
- 1:17:20Speaker 24: and not have negative plays, not have penalties, not look
- 1:17:25Speaker 24: out of whack with substitution offensively, I mean, again, the
- 1:17:29Speaker 24: execution wasn't good enough, but I felt like we gave
- 1:17:33Speaker 24: ourselves at least a chance to get into the football
- 1:17:38Speaker 24: game by not, you know, standing there while the ball
- 1:17:42Speaker 24: snapped and a guy standing there in a stance and
- 1:17:44Speaker 24: some of those crazy things that can kind of when
- 1:17:47Speaker 24: you're in that environment and, you know, crowd noise and
- 1:17:51Speaker 24: opening night and all those other things. You know, I
- 1:17:55Speaker 24: think that, you know, defensively there were moments of, you know,
- 1:17:59Speaker 24: good defense. You know, our ability to get off the
- 1:18:03Speaker 24: field on third down was positive.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: It was very positive.
- 1:18:09Speaker 24: You know, like I said, I thought we covered kickoffs well,
- 1:18:11Speaker 24: and we have to improve on some of those kickoff
- 1:18:14Speaker 24: return opportunities that we get.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: What did you see from Matt Collins?
- 1:18:18Speaker 11: It seemed like he really stepped up after A.J.
- 1:18:20Speaker 10: Went down.
- 1:18:20Speaker 24: Matt's always taking advantage of his opportunities. I think that
- 1:18:25Speaker 24: the quarterback knows he's going to be in the right
- 1:18:27Speaker 24: spot when he's supposed to be there. He's a competitive player.
- 1:18:31Speaker 24: He plays on special teams for us. Just ready to
- 1:18:36Speaker 24: go and ready to take advantage of the opportunities. You
- 1:18:39Speaker 24: kind of go in thinking here's the plan. I may
- 1:18:41Speaker 24: play X amount of snaps. Something happens and then that
- 1:18:44Speaker 24: all of a sudden gets changed. So Mac's been through
- 1:18:47Speaker 24: that a lot, and we're comfortable being able to move
- 1:18:50Speaker 24: him around as well in those multiple positions. Do you
- 1:18:53Speaker 24: sense Kyle's role standing?
- 1:18:57Speaker 19: Sure.
- 1:18:57Speaker 24: With AJ, we want to get Kyle involved. I've tried
- 1:19:01Speaker 24: to talk about that. But, yeah, I'm hopeful that Kyle can–
- 1:19:08Speaker 24: Find a role for us and find a way to
- 1:19:10Speaker 24: help us and use his speed and catch and run
- 1:19:14Speaker 24: opportunities like we saw last year at times or some
- 1:19:19Speaker 24: shot type plays. Just like everybody else, not good enough
- 1:19:27Speaker 24: for us to win. We like where Jared's at and
- 1:19:32Speaker 24: his comfort level of operating with the quarterback and communicating
- 1:19:36Speaker 24: and Again, he had some good plays and had some
- 1:19:39Speaker 24: plays that we'd all like to have back. But I
- 1:19:44Speaker 24: think Jared's only going to continue to get better. When
- 1:19:47Speaker 24: it comes to the ground game, where's the line between
- 1:19:49Speaker 24: wanting to just line up and run the ball versus
- 1:19:51Speaker 24: wanting to use different presentations and maybe motions to create some.
- 1:19:54Speaker 25: Type of advantage?
- 1:19:55Speaker 24: Well, I think that's great. We've been through a lot
- 1:19:59Speaker 24: of different scenarios, and as long as you know where
- 1:20:01Speaker 24: they're going to be when you motion out of there,
- 1:20:05Speaker 24: are they going to go with you? Are they not?
- 1:20:07Speaker 24: You know, where's the where's the mic point? Where is
- 1:20:10Speaker 24: the line going to where they push into? You know,
- 1:20:14Speaker 24: so again, I think we saw, you know, at the
- 1:20:17Speaker 24: end of the end of the game in the last drive,
- 1:20:19Speaker 24: our ability to to be able to hit some plays.
- 1:20:22Speaker 24: And it wasn't anything magical. It was the same thing
- 1:20:24Speaker 24: we were running. We just were able to block some movement.
- 1:20:26Speaker 24: We were able to get to the second level, cover
- 1:20:29Speaker 24: them up. You know, I think we had a couple
- 1:20:31Speaker 24: of runs there that that were pretty positive.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: Do you believe in sort of the body blows, you know,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: mindset in the run game? Like, you know, wear them
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: down over time?
- 1:20:40Speaker 24: I mean, I think we just have to be, you know,
- 1:20:43Speaker 24: what we believe in is trying to run as many
- 1:20:46Speaker 24: positive plays and stay in as many more advantageous downs
- 1:20:54Speaker 24: and distances, you know, to stay balanced. And, you know,
- 1:20:59Speaker 24: that's what we believe in. I mean, again, there's, We
- 1:21:03Speaker 24: don't want to just say we have to run it
- 1:21:04Speaker 24: so many times. We don't want to throw it. Again,
- 1:21:07Speaker 24: we can throw it 45 times, but there's an interesting
- 1:21:10Speaker 24: stat on that. When you throw it 45 times, unless
- 1:21:15Speaker 24: you're Tom Brady, you win about 20% of the game.
- 1:21:18Speaker 24: We all know what that stat looks like. I'm just joking.
- 1:21:21Speaker 24: We want to be balanced and we want to be sound. Again,
- 1:21:26Speaker 24: we want to be able to run the football and
- 1:21:29Speaker 24: be able to set some things up off of it
- 1:21:31Speaker 24: so that, again, there's not just a drop-back pass. There's
- 1:21:34Speaker 24: got to be play action. We've got to be able
- 1:21:36Speaker 24: to hit some screens. All these things that we looked
- 1:21:39Speaker 24: at that we had chances for. Again, we're not just
- 1:21:46Speaker 24: going to run it for the sake of running it.
- 1:21:48Speaker 24: We're trying to run it with a purpose and to
- 1:21:50Speaker 24: be able to set some things up. If you're playing
- 1:21:53Speaker 24: a team that is in split safety. They're in split
- 1:21:58Speaker 24: safety to stop the pass, not to stop the run.
- 1:22:00Speaker 24: So we should be able to run the football.
- 1:22:23Speaker 23: There's enough needless nonsense in the world already. Your phone
- 1:22:25Speaker 23: plan shouldn't add to it. Verizon's new simplicity plan cuts
- 1:22:29Speaker 23: down on the nonsense in your life.
- 1:22:30Speaker 12: Now there's just one plan, one price.
- 1:22:32Speaker 23: $ 30 a line per month, even for a single line.
- 1:22:35Speaker 12: And everyone gets our best 5G network.
- 1:22:38Speaker 23: It's a phone plan designed to do exactly what a
- 1:22:40Speaker 23: phone plan is supposed to do. Isn't that a lot simpler?
- 1:22:43Speaker 23: Switch today at Verizon.com or at your nearest store. For
- 1:22:45Speaker 23: new customers, $ 30 per line includes auto pay and switch discount,
- 1:22:48Speaker 23: additional taxes, fees, and terms apply. Unlimited data is restricted
- 1:22:50Speaker 23: to on-device smartphone usage. Domestic data roaming at 2G speeds.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: It's Legal Seafood's Fresh Take of the Week.
- 1:22:56Speaker 16: That's right.
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: The Legal Seafood's.
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: Fresh Take of the Week. And I'm going to button
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: hook everybody again. Because everybody... I think I'm miscast as
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: the negative guy.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: What? You?
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: I have optimism.
- 1:23:16Speaker 11: That's inaccurate casting.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: You're probably right.
- 1:23:19Speaker 7: I have more optimism for Romeo Dobbs, I think, than
- 1:23:23Speaker 7: most Patriots fans right now.
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: It was not pretty.
- 1:23:25Speaker 7: The first game on the Wednesday night in Seattle did
- 1:23:28Speaker 7: not go as planned, but I'm not going to ignore
- 1:23:31Speaker 7: what I saw for five or six weeks in the
- 1:23:33Speaker 7: training camp field and just go off of one bad
- 1:23:36Speaker 7: game that I watched. I think he has a good
- 1:23:38Speaker 7: track record from Green Bay. I think he has the
- 1:23:40Speaker 7: ability to get open and strong hands to catch the ball.
- 1:23:43Speaker 7: It was a horrific drop, and I think it really
- 1:23:46Speaker 7: affected him mentally in that game. I think he bounces
- 1:23:48Speaker 7: back and becomes the reliable guy that we all thought
- 1:23:52Speaker 7: was drake may was going to have so i still
- 1:23:54Speaker 7: i have not given up on romeo dobbs in the.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: Least playing the role of juliet no that's good well
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: paul was a guy who wore the small c of
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: concern this summer you had that small c of concern
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: on your.
- 1:24:05Speaker 7: In the spring and to open camp i hadn't really
- 1:24:07Speaker 7: seen much then it just kind of clicked and i
- 1:24:10Speaker 7: thought he was open consistently on the training camp field he.
- 1:24:13Speaker 5: Was open on that deep over the other night he
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: just dropped the.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: Ball That is your Legal Seafood Fresh Take of the Day.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: Legal Seafoods is giving fans a true taste of Boston
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: this season as the official seafood restaurant of the New
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: England Patriots. Pre-game or post-game, get the seafood you love
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: at your local restaurant today, LegalSeafoods.com. I do want to
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: read this one email before we get back to the phones.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: This is from Tucker in Virginia. Headline, Drake May got Belichicked.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: Couldn't help but thinking the Seahawks played the game exactly
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: how Bill Belichick would have wanted. Force the teams to
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: play dink and dunk football, don't give up any big plays,
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: and then wait for them to make a mistake, especially
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: against a quarterback like Drake May, who feels the need
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: to make big plays. The good news is that it
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: seems like the Patriots coaching staff recognizes that, and hopefully
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: Drake May can learn from it. Although Josh Allen is
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: still making the same mistakes, he just got lucky that
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: his end zone pick was dropped.
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: He did get lucky.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: So, is McDonald off the Parcells tree?
- 1:25:20Speaker 20: No.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: Oh, he's not?
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: No.
- 1:25:22Speaker 13: No.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: Okay. I know he came from the Ravens.
- 1:25:25Speaker 14: Yeah, I guess you consider him a Harbaugh tree guy,
- 1:25:27Speaker 14: if that's a tree that exists.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: John Harbaugh.
- 1:25:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: He came from.
- 1:25:31Speaker 7: michigan did he not uh michigan baltimore he was with
- 1:25:34Speaker 7: jim harbaugh then he went to baltimore okay with john
- 1:25:38Speaker 7: that's why.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: I said harbaugh yeah okay uh i was backing you i.
- 1:25:41Speaker 14: Don't know if that's a tree that exists yet i
- 1:25:43Speaker 14: don't know if we they but jesse minter is coming
- 1:25:46Speaker 14: off that.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: Tree too wink martindale i.
- 1:25:49Speaker 14: Would say like the blitz package is wink yeah winky
- 1:25:52Speaker 14: martindale uh winkish uh wink but they play with a
- 1:25:57Speaker 14: lot more structure than Wink Martindale did. Wink Martindale blitzed
- 1:26:01Speaker 14: on every play. See what Brian Flores did the other day? Yeah,
- 1:26:05Speaker 14: he also blitzes on every play. But I would say
- 1:26:08Speaker 14: that the Seahawks play a lot more structure, just like,
- 1:26:11Speaker 14: you know, coverage than Wink Martindale did. But their blitz
- 1:26:17Speaker 14: package is birthed from the Wink Martindale.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: It's getting harder to discern trees.
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: Like, I know when Vrabel's squad got here, we were
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: all trying to, like, figure out what the tree was.
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: And I think it's kind of a mishmash, but you know,
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: even Flores, like what he's doing is not really what
- 1:26:30Speaker 4: Belichick was doing.
- 1:26:31Speaker 11: Flores is on his own Island.
- 1:26:32Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:26:33Speaker 11: Like Flores is doing Flores. I don't know what Flores
- 1:26:35Speaker 11: is doing. Some of the things that.
- 1:26:36Speaker 14: They were running with zone, like some of the, I
- 1:26:38Speaker 14: watched some of the dropbacks just for fun. And that's like, what,
- 1:26:41Speaker 14: I don't even know what this is like, what, what
- 1:26:43Speaker 14: are we doing? Uh, but like, I would say McDonald, um,
- 1:26:48Speaker 14: you know, Jesse Minter, all these guys are playing styles
- 1:26:52Speaker 14: of defense that really stem from Vic Fangio.
- 1:26:55Speaker 11: And then they're adding more.
- 1:26:57Speaker 14: Exotic blitz packages, which is kind of like the Wink
- 1:26:59Speaker 14: Martindale stuff. But really, I would say the godfather of
- 1:27:03Speaker 14: all of this is Fangio.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:27:06Speaker 7: So I agree with the overall point that it was
- 1:27:09Speaker 7: a Tucker, the emailer. I do think that Seattle kind
- 1:27:12Speaker 7: of did what Belichick would do. I also think Rabel
- 1:27:17Speaker 7: coached in a similar fashion. The other team has their
- 1:27:19Speaker 7: backup quarterback in. We don't need 30.
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: To win this game. Let's run the ball. Let's wear
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: on them and lean on them.
- 1:27:28Speaker 7: And obviously it didn't work because, as we all said
- 1:27:31Speaker 7: for an hour and a half now, Drake made three
- 1:27:33Speaker 7: interceptions in the fourth quarter, and that kind of sabotaged
- 1:27:36Speaker 7: your game plan.
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: But I do agree with his point.
- 1:27:38Speaker 7: I think that's the way McDonald approached the game was
- 1:27:41Speaker 7: very Belichickian.
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Marty's in Melbourne on the hotline, 855-PASS-500. What's up, Marty?
- 1:27:48Speaker 7: Marty.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: Marty.
- 1:27:51Speaker 25: Marty.
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: All right, he's gone. He couldn't last through the break.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: All right, let's go up to Maryland with Brian. What's up, Brian? Brian.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: And Brian is gone. Okay, two down. Let's get down.
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: Now we'll go from Maryland to New York. Ben, what's up,
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: Ben in New York?
- 1:28:15Speaker 11: Hey, guys.
- 1:28:16Speaker 25: Just a new listener here.
- 1:28:18Speaker 9: I've been really enjoying the show. I got put in
- 1:28:20Speaker 9: by a friend.
- 1:28:21Speaker 6: So I do have a question, though, a little kind
- 1:28:24Speaker 6: of as I've been watching, like, these games. And you
- 1:28:27Speaker 6: go on Twitter and you can see these responses. I
- 1:28:30Speaker 6: do think football is the biggest discrepancy in between what
- 1:28:34Speaker 6: experts are viewing it and how a fan views it.
- 1:28:36Speaker 9: Because for the most part, fans are viewing maybe 15 games.
- 1:28:40Speaker 25: A year, 17 games, plus if they're lucky.
- 1:28:44Speaker 6: And you kind of.
- 1:28:44Speaker 9: See it listening to these podcasts.
- 1:28:46Speaker 6: Julian Edelman talked about these harsh round picks that come
- 1:28:50Speaker 6: in and you're waiting for their superpower. And you'll read
- 1:28:53Speaker 6: about this person on Twitter and Twitter will be like, hey,
- 1:28:55Speaker 6: this person's terrible. To go back to the offensive line,
- 1:28:59Speaker 6: I do think looking back at that game, there's a
- 1:29:02Speaker 6: lot of things that went bad. But I felt Will
- 1:29:05Speaker 6: Campbell looked pretty good. Did you guys see any signs
- 1:29:08Speaker 6: this summer? You guys get the opportunity to go see
- 1:29:10Speaker 6: these guys kind of in training camp, which gets kind
- 1:29:12Speaker 6: of inside edge on these guys.
- 1:29:15Speaker 15: Do you guys see any signs in training camp.
- 1:29:16Speaker 6: That this is really where his direction is going? And
- 1:29:18Speaker 6: he might have found that first round superpower?
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I think. Oh, okay. Go ahead.
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: Or.
- 1:29:24Speaker 6: No, no, no.
- 1:29:26Speaker 9: Or is this kind of like a one-off?
- 1:29:28Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: No, I think in training camp, everybody's was, he's looking
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: pretty good, but let's see what happens when things get real.
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: And I think he looked pretty good in the game.
- 1:29:38Speaker 14: Yeah, a couple penalties that they got to clean up.
- 1:29:41Speaker 14: The holding was iffy. I thought that that was borderline, but.
- 1:29:45Speaker 5: I didn't like the holding.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: Oh, that was a terrible call.
- 1:29:47Speaker 14: Yeah, the two penalties were really the only... They still
- 1:29:51Speaker 14: got to figure out how to pick up stunts over
- 1:29:53Speaker 14: the left side. That's been a problem all summer long,
- 1:29:55Speaker 14: but for him, like one-on-one pass blocking, uh.
- 1:29:58Speaker 11: Significantly improved.
- 1:30:00Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:30:00Speaker 11: I did.
- 1:30:01Speaker 14: I only didn't have him with a single pressure allowed
- 1:30:03Speaker 14: in this game. He allowed some people thought he allowed
- 1:30:06Speaker 14: 14 in the super bowl. So to go from, you know,
- 1:30:08Speaker 14: whatever that number was in the super bowl, you know, high,
- 1:30:12Speaker 14: whatever it was to one or two in this game,
- 1:30:15Speaker 14: depending on, you know, who you trust, uh, That's a
- 1:30:17Speaker 14: pretty good improvement.
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: There was another holding call last night in the game.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: I think it was on a wide receiver on the edge,
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: and it was just a terrible call.
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: So it was on a different player than the replay
- 1:30:27Speaker 5: they showed.
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: Oh, was it?
- 1:30:29Speaker 7: They announced it as Cortland Sutton in the end zone,
- 1:30:32Speaker 7: and then off camera they corrected it to number 13,
- 1:30:35Speaker 7: and they never showed it.
- 1:30:37Speaker 9: Oh, okay.
- 1:30:37Speaker 5: But Sutton's block in the end zone was nowhere near holding.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: No, but this was the one I saw was near
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: the line.
- 1:30:43Speaker 7: Yeah, it was right at the line on like a,
- 1:30:45Speaker 7: I think it was a quick, Quick screen or something?
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: Near the end zone. Oh, okay.
- 1:30:49Speaker 5: He ended up in the end zone.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: He was blocked.
- 1:30:51Speaker 7: I think it might have been the play that Nick
- 1:30:54Speaker 7: scrambled and fumbled, and they got lucky because the guy
- 1:30:58Speaker 7: was out of bounds. Snead, I think, had a foot
- 1:31:01Speaker 7: out of bounds when he was recovering the fumble.
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: Todd's in Gardner. What's up, Todd?
- 1:31:07Speaker 15: I want to start by saying I loved the pre-
- 1:31:09Speaker 15: and post-game this year. It's been just amazing, so thank
- 1:31:12Speaker 15: you for.
- 1:31:13Speaker 9: Fixing up, Fred.
- 1:31:16Speaker 15: And I've got two little things that I've got some
- 1:31:18Speaker 15: concern about. One, I'm going to argue with our friend
- 1:31:23Speaker 15: down in L.A.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: I think he's wrong.
- 1:31:24Speaker 15: I think Loma was a good pick because we didn't
- 1:31:28Speaker 15: know if we were getting our left back. We didn't
- 1:31:30Speaker 15: know if Will was going to come back from the injury,
- 1:31:32Speaker 15: how far he'd get, what his progress would be. So
- 1:31:34Speaker 15: we needed to back that up. We have Moses on
- 1:31:37Speaker 15: the other side.
- 1:31:39Speaker 9: It was a solid pick.
- 1:31:40Speaker 15: You know, you can't get ahead of yourself. You can't
- 1:31:43Speaker 15: get over your skis when you're trying to build a team.
- 1:31:46Speaker 15: And the other thing that I've got is I'm worried
- 1:31:48Speaker 15: about not, not Dobbs physical capability to catch the ball
- 1:31:53Speaker 15: or even run a route, but his ability to run
- 1:31:56Speaker 15: the routes according to McDaniels. Oh, I don't know if
- 1:32:00Speaker 15: he's got it in him to understand, you know, what
- 1:32:03Speaker 15: to do, how to adjust himself. And I don't think
- 1:32:06Speaker 15: he was in that game. I just felt like he
- 1:32:08Speaker 15: was just a little bit out. I know he wears
- 1:32:10Speaker 15: the helmet on them and I know he didn't have.
- 1:32:12Speaker 10: A concussion or anything.
- 1:32:13Speaker 19: I just, I didn't worry.
- 1:32:15Speaker 15: I got concerned about that guy. That's my two points.
- 1:32:17Speaker 15: And again, thanks for the pre and post game.
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 1:32:20Speaker 14: I don't have concerns about him understanding route conversions. I
- 1:32:24Speaker 14: have concerns about his confidence.
- 1:32:26Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:32:26Speaker 11: And about his mental makeup.
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: Not to worry about that.
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: I was going to say, in this day of social
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: media and these young kids... in mental wellness and all
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: this stuff. I think sports psychiatry has a bigger role
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: in pro sports than it ever did. And you look
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: at Dobbs during training camp and when he had a
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: good play, like he'd really be demonstrative. He'd throw the
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: ball in the air and like, you know, if you do,
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: if you're that excited about the good plays, how are
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: you feeling about the bad plays? And so that is
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: something that maybe the team has to look at and say, Hey,
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: you know, let's try to aim for more of an,
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: rather than highs and lows.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: I thought that's where he was going.
- 1:33:05Speaker 14: Because I think physically I have no concerns about Romeo
- 1:33:08Speaker 14: Dobbs being a good football player, routes, anything. I have
- 1:33:11Speaker 14: concerns about maybe him mentally.
- 1:33:14Speaker 5: I didn't have concerns of him getting open. I had
- 1:33:16Speaker 5: concerns about him catching the ball.
- 1:33:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:33:19Speaker 7: I think the route was... I mean, that was a
- 1:33:21Speaker 7: big play. 10-10... You know, Drake is rolling out. They
- 1:33:26Speaker 7: dialed something up.
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: He's open.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: In space.
- 1:33:29Speaker 5: In space.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: Yeah. You've got to catch the ball.
- 1:33:32Speaker 14: You knew that they had that in the game plan, too. Like,
- 1:33:34Speaker 14: the dash pass, the whole concept, you knew they were
- 1:33:38Speaker 14: waiting for a time to call that exact play.
- 1:33:41Speaker 11: They dialed it up. It worked exactly how they thought
- 1:33:44Speaker 11: it was going to work, and then he just dropped
- 1:33:45Speaker 11: the ball.
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: The dash pass.
- 1:33:47Speaker 13: Yes.
- 1:33:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I left that part out.
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: I thought that was what you put in your dashboard
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: to get through the tolls.
- 1:33:52Speaker 11: No.
- 1:33:53Speaker 15: No?
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: No.
- 1:33:54Speaker 14: The rollout.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: That's easy.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Dashing.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: You can put it in your dashboard. I'm going to
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: call it dash pass from now on.
- 1:34:00Speaker 11: When you roll. The rollout.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: The design rollout.
- 1:34:03Speaker 11: Call it a dash pass.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Pay by plate.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: Uh is there a place where you get all this
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: information like this is what you call this.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: That's the dark it's the dark web yeah this is.
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: Like really dark web deep web i mostly just google
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: stuff if i don't know or i ask somebody that
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: will so if you run the play and put it
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: in co-pilot say what is the name of this play
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: will co-pilot.
- 1:34:27Speaker 11: No i have i have playbooks The playbooks.
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: Plural.
- 1:34:31Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:34:33Speaker 11: I have one from.
- 1:34:33Speaker 5: Many let their bound.
- 1:34:36Speaker 14: I have, like, ones from different trees. I have a
- 1:34:38Speaker 14: West Coast offense playbook. I have.
- 1:34:42Speaker 11: I have another playbook.
- 1:34:44Speaker 14: I have, you know, I have different playbooks, and, like,
- 1:34:47Speaker 14: I can go through the playbooks and look at the
- 1:34:49Speaker 14: concepts and look at the.
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: And do you buy these on the black market? Like,
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: how do you meet somebody behind Stop and Shop and.
- 1:34:53Speaker 11: You know... You know.
- 1:34:54Speaker 16: Hey, man.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: You look up for playbooks?
- 1:34:55Speaker 10: Our.
- 1:34:57Speaker 14: Our ball miller friends, you know, guys that are in
- 1:35:00Speaker 14: the league or were in the league, sometimes we'll share drives.
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: They share the stuff around like contraband.
- 1:35:05Speaker 5: I have the Patriots one. I don't know if I
- 1:35:07Speaker 5: still have it.
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: I have an old Patriots one. I think it's like.
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: Is that the one that was allegedly left in the
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: copy machines one day?
- 1:35:16Speaker 6: No.
- 1:35:18Speaker 5: Back when we had.
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: Sort of different relationships. Little insider. Back in the day,
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: this is still in this stadium, but Where my first
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: office was here, it was next to a copy room.
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: Small little closet with a big copy machine. And every
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: once in a while, football would come in and use
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: that copy machine, and they'd leave stuff everywhere. They're lucky
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: I'm a loyal soldier.
- 1:35:42Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, I would never, like.
- 1:35:44Speaker 14: post the actual playbook i just use it for my
- 1:35:47Speaker 14: course you wouldn't i just use it for my own
- 1:35:48Speaker 14: knowledge your own edification yes correct and i don't i
- 1:35:51Speaker 14: try not to pass yeah i try not to like
- 1:35:54Speaker 14: call the route concepts what they actually call them you know.
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: Just be careful evan Just be careful. Just be careful.
- 1:36:01Speaker 5: We're all worried about you.
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: Don't give it all away.
- 1:36:02Speaker 5: You can just download them at footballxos.com.
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: Yeah, there's some good ones in there.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: Some old ones. I mean, they're all not a good site.
- 1:36:08Speaker 14: Yeah, you can download some of them, but most of
- 1:36:11Speaker 14: them are limited in terms of like.
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: And you don't know if they're real.
- 1:36:14Speaker 14: Yeah, that too. But I'd say they're limited. Like, they
- 1:36:17Speaker 14: have like certain sections.
- 1:36:19Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:36:19Speaker 11: It's not the whole thing. Like, they might have like.
- 1:36:23Speaker 14: Sean McVay's drop-back menu, but they don't have his play-action
- 1:36:26Speaker 14: passes and his runs and all the different things.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: The 0-3 one they have, it's only even pages. You
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: only get.
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: Half of everything.
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: Weird stuff like that.
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: Noah's in Toronto. What's up, Noah?
- 1:36:39Speaker 4: Hey, guys.
- 1:36:40Speaker 17: I wanted to ask a little bit about the run game.
- 1:36:45Speaker 17: Last year, they were 25th in the league in rushing efficiency.
- 1:36:49Speaker 17: They struggle all training camp. They come out week one
- 1:36:52Speaker 17: Seattle's begging them to run the ball, like, basically exclusively,
- 1:36:57Speaker 17: playing too high. They rank 32nd in the league in
- 1:37:00Speaker 17: rushing efficiency. And I just don't feel like personnel-wise they
- 1:37:05Speaker 17: should be this bad. Moses, I'm going to bear it, Tucker. They've, like,
- 1:37:10Speaker 17: been proven run blockers in the league. Campbell is known
- 1:37:14Speaker 17: more for his run blocking than his pass blocking coming out.
- 1:37:18Speaker 17: And they bring in Gilliam, Stephenson's a solid back. I
- 1:37:22Speaker 17: just don't understand why they can't run the ball. And
- 1:37:27Speaker 17: maybe the ball knowers there can elucidate that. But to me,
- 1:37:32Speaker 17: it seems like something about McDaniel's game is just not,
- 1:37:37Speaker 17: not working. And like, when you watch them, it's not like, Oh,
- 1:37:42Speaker 17: every play, it's the same guy who is messing up.
- 1:37:45Speaker 17: It's like every play, there's a different guy. So I just,
- 1:37:50Speaker 17: I mean, the tight ends are pretty bad, but other
- 1:37:52Speaker 17: than that, I don't know how they sort of get
- 1:37:55Speaker 17: around this and what's going on. All right.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: Thanks, Noah. So when Ramondre gets hit in the backfield,
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: like Noah said, it's not one guy screwing up. What
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: is going on where they're getting that type of penetration?
- 1:38:12Speaker 14: Well, it's a combination of factors, you know. Like, sometimes
- 1:38:15Speaker 14: the defender's unblocked. That was a big problem in this game.
- 1:38:18Speaker 14: Julian Love was just... So, communication. That, to me, is
- 1:38:22Speaker 14: on the quarterback.
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: On the quarterback.
- 1:38:24Speaker 14: The quarterback's got... They have a can system. So, like,
- 1:38:27Speaker 14: usually you can can from run... to run or a
- 1:38:30Speaker 14: pass to run. But, you know, based off of where
- 1:38:33Speaker 14: the defense is aligned, you can look at it pre-snap
- 1:38:36Speaker 14: and say, okay, they have six guys over here and
- 1:38:38Speaker 14: we only have five blockers. So if I run this
- 1:38:41Speaker 14: run into this front, then this guy's going to be
- 1:38:43Speaker 14: unblocked and Ramondre is.
- 1:38:45Speaker 11: Going to have no place to go.
- 1:38:46Speaker 14: So in theory, you would want to try to can
- 1:38:49Speaker 14: that run or even flip it to the other direction
- 1:38:51Speaker 14: or do something to try to account for that defender,
- 1:38:54Speaker 14: you know, bring a guy in, block that guy, dig
- 1:38:56Speaker 14: them out, you know, whatever the case may be, but
- 1:38:58Speaker 14: you can, there's a million different ways that you can
- 1:39:00Speaker 14: get answers to that. So that was one problem. Another
- 1:39:03Speaker 14: problem is just losing one-on-one blocks. Like Byron Murphy just
- 1:39:06Speaker 14: blows up Jared Wilson and four yards in the backfield
- 1:39:10Speaker 14: that that's just execution. Like that's not mental. That's just
- 1:39:14Speaker 14: physically getting beat at the point of attack. So I'm
- 1:39:17Speaker 14: with the color. Like it's a frustrating thing to me
- 1:39:20Speaker 14: because they can't run the ball and they haven't really
- 1:39:22Speaker 14: been able to run the ball for years. Like different coordinators,
- 1:39:26Speaker 14: different coaches, different personnel. So we got the last time
- 1:39:30Speaker 14: I think they had a good running game was maybe
- 1:39:32Speaker 14: 22 and Like maybe 21, honestly. And so that's frustrating.
- 1:39:38Speaker 14: And I think in their histories as coaches, Mike Rabel
- 1:39:42Speaker 14: and Josh McDaniels have always run the ball.
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: So like what?
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: Certainly in Tennessee.
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: Can they get there? That's where I'm at. Can this
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: offensive line gel?
- 1:39:51Speaker 4: And I think there's a little bit of time at
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: the beginning of season where you allow some space for
- 1:39:54Speaker 4: that to happen, but. can that combination of them playing
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: better together and Drake recognizing when he needs to get
- 1:40:01Speaker 4: out of different plays.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: I mean, that's what I was looking for this year.
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: It wasn't great in week one, but hopefully he can
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: get to that point where he can recognize these things.
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: And like in Vrabel, Vrabel was so quick on that.
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: He's like, can it quarterbacks got to can it.
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:13Speaker 11: Yeah, it's a good question. I think it's all of
- 1:40:16Speaker 11: the above.
- 1:40:16Speaker 14: If he just plays better.
- 1:40:20Speaker 11: Right, yeah, I think it's all of the above.
- 1:40:21Speaker 14: The third and five draw that everybody's harping on and
- 1:40:24Speaker 14: on about, about the call itself, I thought there was
- 1:40:27Speaker 14: more yards there. Ramondre just ran right into Barrett Tucker's back.
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: He took some responsibility yesterday when we talked to him.
- 1:40:34Speaker 14: So I think that was one that you could look
- 1:40:37Speaker 14: at it as the running back. Like I thought that
- 1:40:38Speaker 14: there was more space there than what the yards that
- 1:40:41Speaker 14: he picked up. If they pick up three or four
- 1:40:43Speaker 14: yards on third and five, do they now go for
- 1:40:45Speaker 14: it on fourth down?
- 1:40:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:40:47Speaker 14: Instead of, instead of punting there, you know, those are
- 1:40:49Speaker 14: the little margins.
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: Um, Eric, uh, on the topic of the offense, any
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: chance we can introduce 21st century offensive concepts to an
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: athletic quarterback, to our OC one, one, Man in motion, please. Two,
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: RPO concepts. Three, lose the stupid slow toss plays. They're
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: way too slow. It's not 2002. Four, how about our
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: wide receiver patterns that differ from north to south? Crosses, please,
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: like the rest of the league. Five, design runs one
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: time per quarter for our quarterback. Six, how about go
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: empty so you can identify blitzers quickly and get the
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: ball out to the wide receiver in space? Stop playing
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: the game in a phone booth. Does any of that
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: resonate with you guys?
- 1:41:35Speaker 5: Some of it does for me.
- 1:41:37Speaker 11: I think the motion thing is legit.
- 1:41:38Speaker 14: I think when you watch other good running games around
- 1:41:42Speaker 14: the league, I was watching the Jaguars ran all over
- 1:41:45Speaker 14: the Browns.
- 1:41:46Speaker 11: There's a lot of deception. There's a lot of motion.
- 1:41:49Speaker 14: The motion isn't just to pull guys out of rushing
- 1:41:53Speaker 14: lanes and things like that. It's also to create favorable
- 1:41:56Speaker 14: angles in the blocks, too. So you can bring guys
- 1:41:58Speaker 14: in motion. Now, a, they have momentum going into their block.
- 1:42:02Speaker 14: So they have a headed steam going into the block,
- 1:42:04Speaker 14: but they are also creating better angles to fit the
- 1:42:07Speaker 14: block that they're trying to make as well.
- 1:42:09Speaker 11: So like those things can all help.
- 1:42:11Speaker 14: It's like, I think motion, a lot of people think, oh, well,
- 1:42:13Speaker 14: you're motioning a guy out of motion.
- 1:42:15Speaker 11: The fit, right?
- 1:42:16Speaker 14: You're going to motion a guy from left to right
- 1:42:18Speaker 14: to get this defender out of there. Some of that's true,
- 1:42:21Speaker 14: but some of it is also just doing it to
- 1:42:24Speaker 14: create better blocking angles and a better, you know, ability
- 1:42:27Speaker 14: to fit the run. I think that was probably the
- 1:42:31Speaker 14: one thing out of that entire list that I would say, like, I,
- 1:42:34Speaker 14: maybe you could involve Drake more, a little bit more
- 1:42:36Speaker 14: in the run game. I don't know if that's his strength. Like,
- 1:42:40Speaker 14: I think he's more of a scrambler. I don't, I
- 1:42:42Speaker 14: don't think he's Lamar Jackson.
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: I agree.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: You just save the naked boots for the fourth downs and,
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42:47Speaker 5: I mean, aside from something like that.
- 1:42:49Speaker 11: Or, like, a goal line package or whatever.
- 1:42:51Speaker 7: Because that's a designed run, right? Like, if you design
- 1:42:53Speaker 7: a naked boot, I have no problem.
- 1:42:55Speaker 5: I agree with Evan.
- 1:42:56Speaker 7: I don't think he runs zone reads as well as, like,
- 1:42:58Speaker 7: Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson. You know, and stuff like that. Like,
- 1:43:02Speaker 7: design runs like that. He's a better scrambler. The one
- 1:43:07Speaker 7: thing I did was kind of get to how I
- 1:43:09Speaker 7: was a little critical of Mike Rabel's game plan in
- 1:43:12Speaker 7: this game. Like, to just pound the ball. on early
- 1:43:15Speaker 7: downs constantly, I kind of like his idea. Maybe let's
- 1:43:19Speaker 7: spread them out a little bit and see if their
- 1:43:21Speaker 7: backup safeties can cover and see if we can put
- 1:43:24Speaker 7: some pressure on them by putting four and five receivers
- 1:43:26Speaker 7: into routes. And again, I don't want to live like
- 1:43:31Speaker 7: that against Seattle. I don't want to open up the
- 1:43:33Speaker 7: door for that pass rush, like as Evan says, dropping
- 1:43:36Speaker 7: back 45 times. I didn't want to do that. The
- 1:43:39Speaker 7: number of times they ran and threw is fine with me.
- 1:43:42Speaker 7: The balance that they have, I just thought that maybe
- 1:43:44Speaker 7: they can do it backwards.
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: Timing.
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: Anthony says, was the last pick Matt Collins' fault? I
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: saw a breakdown where the person who broke the play
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: down said Matt was supposed to run to a goal
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: run a go to the end zone. That would have
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: cleared space for the out route Hunter Henry ran. When
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: Mack didn't, it allowed his defender to stay in the
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: vicinity of where Hunter's route was going. Drake froze, then
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: got pressured and threw the pick. So obvious Drake has
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: to throw it away, but is there credence to the
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: notion that Mack made a big mistake?
- 1:44:16Speaker 14: So I would say that that whole play was like
- 1:44:18Speaker 14: kind of a calamity. Like Morgan, most supposed to cut
- 1:44:21Speaker 14: the end. He doesn't get Dexter Lawrence on the ground.
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: So that's problem.
- 1:44:25Speaker 11: Number one.
- 1:44:26Speaker 14: So now Dexter Lawrence is in the passing lane. Matt
- 1:44:29Speaker 14: Collins is right. I don't know if this is how
- 1:44:30Speaker 14: they coach it. This is just my interpretation. He releases inside.
- 1:44:35Speaker 14: So when you release inside, like that, you're causing a
- 1:44:38Speaker 14: spacing issue with the stick route, with the route that
- 1:44:41Speaker 14: Hunter Henry is running. So Matt Collins, his job there,
- 1:44:44Speaker 14: in my opinion, is to release outside and then get
- 1:44:47Speaker 14: run the corner off so that the corner that's sitting
- 1:44:50Speaker 14: outside in the flat can't jump Hunter Henry's route. So
- 1:44:54Speaker 14: Drake may is holding the ball, waiting for that corner
- 1:44:57Speaker 14: to declare. Is he going to sit in the flat
- 1:44:59Speaker 14: or is he going to carry Matt Collins deep? So
- 1:45:02Speaker 14: I think that whole thing just kind of was a
- 1:45:04Speaker 14: cluster and, Now the solution is just to hit the
- 1:45:07Speaker 14: player or lift to play another day. Hit the tuba
- 1:45:10Speaker 14: player in the 10th row, right?
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: The ball, right?
- 1:45:12Speaker 11: That's the solution.
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: Miller's defense.
- 1:45:13Speaker 5: He does say that it's on Drake to throw the
- 1:45:15Speaker 5: ball away. And he didn't.
- 1:45:17Speaker 7: And I know a lot of people have said, he
- 1:45:18Speaker 7: looked like you tried to, I don't think so. I
- 1:45:20Speaker 7: think he was trying to give his guy a chance
- 1:45:21Speaker 7: to make a.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: Play and he shouldn't have. Yeah. But it was a
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: great pick.
- 1:45:25Speaker 5: I mean, the guy getting his feet in bounds, but.
- 1:45:28Speaker 5: The ball was underthrown. And it was not thrown away.
- 1:45:33Speaker 5: It was in play.
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: Like I said, even if he thought he was going
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: to make a play, you've got to throw that longer.
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: Matt Collins has to be the only guy that has
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: a chance to catch that.
- 1:45:43Speaker 5: So you think it was probably supposed to be something
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: quick to Henry?
- 1:45:46Speaker 11: So Henry was open.
- 1:45:47Speaker 14: They were running Henry on a stick, and he had
- 1:45:50Speaker 14: the safety whoever was covering him. had inside leverage, he
- 1:45:53Speaker 14: was breaking out on the stick, and he would have
- 1:45:55Speaker 14: been open. But the other two errors, I think, was
- 1:45:59Speaker 14: what kind of caused the play to start to be
- 1:46:01Speaker 14: a train wreck, and then Drake made a bad play
- 1:46:03Speaker 14: worse by throwing the ball into harm's way.
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: Let's see. Christian's in Denver. Is this Chris with the T-I-A-N?
- 1:46:10Speaker 5: Danvers.
- 1:46:11Speaker 10: Yes, it is.
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: What's up, Christian?
- 1:46:14Speaker 10: Well, pretty worried about the A.J. Brown injury, and I
- 1:46:18Speaker 10: just can't see him looking.
- 1:46:22Speaker 10: Are resembling anything that we hoped we were going to
- 1:46:25Speaker 10: get out of him the rest of the year based
- 1:46:26Speaker 10: on this injury. Like, I hope I'm wrong, but like
- 1:46:29Speaker 10: everything you read and everything I hear, it's like he
- 1:46:32Speaker 10: would have been better off breaking.
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: So, you know, let me ask a question. I'm not
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: going to hang up on you yet, Christian, but with
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: the IR. He can't come back until after four games.
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: After four games, how long does he have to come back?
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: As long as they need. Until they start practicing.
- 1:46:51Speaker 14: Yeah, once he starts practicing is when the window, the
- 1:46:53Speaker 14: clock starts ticking.
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:46:55Speaker 11: So as long as they don't return him to practice.
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: So there's no window after. Well, if he doesn't play
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: by this time, you have to put him on.
- 1:47:00Speaker 11: Unless he returns to practice.
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: Right. Yeah.
- 1:47:02Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: Okay. Go ahead, Christian. I'm sorry.
- 1:47:06Speaker 10: So, you know, that to me, okay, I look at
- 1:47:09Speaker 10: it as if I'm the team, I'm like, I got
- 1:47:13Speaker 10: to go forward with, you know, with, with, with, with
- 1:47:16Speaker 10: dogs and, and, and really make him the one now.
- 1:47:19Speaker 10: And then all the other guys around him are going
- 1:47:21Speaker 10: to have to pick up the slack. Like that's how
- 1:47:23Speaker 10: I would, if I'm looking at it, And everybody in
- 1:47:26Speaker 10: that building knows with injuries, especially this type of injuries,
- 1:47:29Speaker 10: like what that means, right? You can't really push off
- 1:47:31Speaker 10: on it. Again, I'm just going by what I read,
- 1:47:33Speaker 10: what I hear on the radio. I've never had the injury.
- 1:47:35Speaker 10: I have no idea what it's like. you know, I think, like,
- 1:47:39Speaker 10: the mentality is totally going to have to change, and
- 1:47:41Speaker 10: it seems like it's almost going to be a lost year. Again,
- 1:47:43Speaker 10: I hope I'm wrong, but, like, that's the feeling I'm
- 1:47:45Speaker 10: getting from it. I'm glad it happened early that it happened.
- 1:47:48Speaker 10: At least it happened early. Like, am I going to
- 1:47:50Speaker 10: be calling in December and saying he went for six
- 1:47:52Speaker 10: at 120 against KC.
- 1:47:54Speaker 25: Monday night, December?
- 1:47:55Speaker 6: Hopefully.
- 1:47:56Speaker 9: You know, I don't know.
- 1:47:57Speaker 10: But I just, it's just a real bummer, and I just,
- 1:48:01Speaker 10: I don't know. Like, Pop Douglas and Eftim Chisholm, time
- 1:48:04Speaker 10: to get off the park, guys.
- 1:48:06Speaker 9: Don't get off the park.
- 1:48:07Speaker 25: Let's see what you got.
- 1:48:09Speaker 10: Enough with the camp specials and the preseason dollies. And
- 1:48:14Speaker 10: the same goes for Kyle Williams, too, by the way.
- 1:48:17Speaker 10: I don't care that he's in year two. And I
- 1:48:19Speaker 10: want this kid in there running down the field catching
- 1:48:21Speaker 10: some deep balls and, you know, trying to take the
- 1:48:24Speaker 10: top off the defense and give these guys some room underneath.
- 1:48:27Speaker 9: A little heated.
- 1:48:28Speaker 10: Sorry about that.
- 1:48:28Speaker 11: That's all right. All right.
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: I like the passion.
- 1:48:32Speaker 7: I would just say I think it's premature to suggest
- 1:48:35Speaker 7: that it's a lost season for A.J.
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: Brown.
- 1:48:37Speaker 7: I mean, I'm not diminishing the injury. I'm not downplaying
- 1:48:41Speaker 7: it at all. I think it's significant. But let's see
- 1:48:44Speaker 7: what it looks like when he does come back. And
- 1:48:47Speaker 7: then how long from there might he be able to
- 1:48:50Speaker 7: do some of the things that Christian said he could do?
- 1:48:52Speaker 7: I don't think it's a loss of it, per se.
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: They've classified it as a high ankle injury, high ankle sprain.
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: Are there various grades of that?
- 1:49:01Speaker 11: So there are.
- 1:49:04Speaker 14: Most medical professionals would say a high ankle sprain is
- 1:49:08Speaker 14: a tear. of the tendons in your ankle. Now they,
- 1:49:12Speaker 14: they call it a sprain, which is kind of like
- 1:49:14Speaker 14: a gray area. I would just say this one sounds
- 1:49:18Speaker 14: like it's not going to need surgery.
- 1:49:20Speaker 11: So you can do surgery.
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: Because I remember with Mac Jones, that was a debate.
- 1:49:24Speaker 14: Especially the tightrope. And this one sounds like they're not
- 1:49:28Speaker 14: going to have to do that. So I'd say that's semi-positive.
- 1:49:32Speaker 14: It's a severe high ankle sprain, but not severe enough
- 1:49:35Speaker 14: that they feel like he needs the tightrope or some
- 1:49:37Speaker 14: sort of surgery.
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: Well, that's my question. Do we know it's a severe
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: high ankle sprain?
- 1:49:41Speaker 7: So I think, in Christian's point, Mike and I leaned
- 1:49:45Speaker 7: on Troy Brown a little bit on this the other night.
- 1:49:47Speaker 7: And when he said that some people think you're better
- 1:49:50Speaker 7: off breaking it, Troy kind of fell into that camp.
- 1:49:54Speaker 7: Like the fact that it's a high ankle sprain is
- 1:49:57Speaker 7: something that if it's not the surgery, like the tightrope
- 1:50:01Speaker 7: surgery that Evan just talked about with Mac Jones, like
- 1:50:04Speaker 7: sometimes it can just linger. And I do think it's
- 1:50:07Speaker 7: one thing for an immobile quarterback like Mac Jones to
- 1:50:10Speaker 7: come back from that in three or four weeks like
- 1:50:12Speaker 7: he did.
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:50:14Speaker 5: So he can get by. He's not running around.
- 1:50:18Speaker 7: Wide receivers are relying on their ability to cut and
- 1:50:21Speaker 7: move on every single play.
- 1:50:23Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 1:50:24Speaker 5: So I do think it potentially is going to impact him.
- 1:50:27Speaker 7: Now I will say this, we've heard all these horror
- 1:50:29Speaker 7: stories about high ankle sprains and guys, you know, a
- 1:50:32Speaker 7: lot of people say Cooper cup has never been the
- 1:50:34Speaker 7: same since he had a high ankle sprain. I would
- 1:50:37Speaker 7: say that AJ Brown is starting at a level of
- 1:50:40Speaker 7: far greater ability than, you know, some of the other
- 1:50:44Speaker 7: guys that have been, but this I'm not, again, I'm
- 1:50:46Speaker 7: not trying to dismiss it. It's, It's a significant injury
- 1:50:49Speaker 7: for a wide receiver.
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: Hopefully, he's able.
- 1:50:52Speaker 5: But.
- 1:50:52Speaker 7: I don't think it's... I think it's premature to suggest
- 1:50:55Speaker 7: that you're not going to get anything out of him
- 1:50:56Speaker 7: with 16 more games to play. Like, you should be
- 1:50:59Speaker 7: able to get something out of him.
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: It's not going to be easy. Yeah.
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: The question is, can they... hold the fort.
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:51:06Speaker 11: I think that's the bigger question.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: Stay in position.
- 1:51:08Speaker 14: Cause I, even like last year, I know they didn't
- 1:51:11Speaker 14: have a host of injuries, but like Will Campbell and
- 1:51:14Speaker 14: Milton Williams got hurt when they already had 12 wins.
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:51:17Speaker 14: So like they already had this, this kind of margin
- 1:51:20Speaker 14: for error built up when those guys did get hurt.
- 1:51:23Speaker 14: They were able, they were already in the playoffs basically
- 1:51:25Speaker 14: at that, at that point. So this is different.
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: They got to go without him. Let's go to B
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: in Baltimore. What's up, B?
- 1:51:34Speaker 5: What up, B?
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: What's up, B?
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: Hey, how you guys doing?
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:51:39Speaker 9: So I want to know, do you guys think McDaniel's
- 1:51:41Speaker 9: offense is kind of predictable? It's like every time you
- 1:51:44Speaker 9: bring a fullback in, they run in the ball. It's
- 1:51:47Speaker 9: like there's no eye candy for the defense to look at.
- 1:51:52Speaker 9: It's just straightforward. There's nothing– There's nothing going this way,
- 1:51:55Speaker 9: going the opposite way.
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: It's just predictable.
- 1:51:58Speaker 9: It's like the same offense he's been running. He's got
- 1:52:00Speaker 9: to get up to date with the day's NFL.
- 1:52:03Speaker 2: I mean, other than the flea flicker, it did look
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: a little bit vanilla. You know?
- 1:52:08Speaker 11: It is week one. Yeah, the starters didn't play any preseason.
- 1:52:14Speaker 9: But the offense was the same pretty much last year.
- 1:52:16Speaker 14: Well, I mean, yeah, the offense was second best offense
- 1:52:21Speaker 14: in the league, so.
- 1:52:23Speaker 2: It's like, if you don't.
- 1:52:24Speaker 9: Have good separators, why we don't run a lot of
- 1:52:26Speaker 9: stack so we can get free releases?
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:52:30Speaker 9: Instead of getting pressed all the time, run stack so
- 1:52:32Speaker 9: you can get the guys that can't separate free releases
- 1:52:36Speaker 9: and get open.
- 1:52:37Speaker 5: I didn't see guys getting open as a problem Wednesday night.
- 1:52:40Speaker 15: No?
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: I didn't. Okay. B, I hear what you're saying. Thanks
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: for the call.
- 1:52:46Speaker 7: I like their passing offense. I think, Evan, you said
- 1:52:49Speaker 7: this early in the show, and I would co-sign on it.
- 1:52:51Speaker 7: I think their structure of their passing game, I don't
- 1:52:54Speaker 7: have a lot. I think they do a lot of
- 1:52:56Speaker 7: different things to get guys open, and it generally works. Again,
- 1:53:02Speaker 7: Romeo Dobbs is wide open for a 20-yard completion, and
- 1:53:06Speaker 7: he dropped the ball. That was a really nice passing
- 1:53:10Speaker 7: game concept. that worked to perfection. They, he can't go out.
- 1:53:16Speaker 7: I mean, not to steal Giselle's line. He can't catch
- 1:53:19Speaker 7: it too. Like at some point players have to play. I,
- 1:53:24Speaker 7: I think all the things that you're saying be about
- 1:53:26Speaker 7: the running game and sort of helping it out. I, again,
- 1:53:30Speaker 7: would co-sign with Evan. Maybe they need to do some
- 1:53:32Speaker 7: different things in the running game, motion angles, and, you know,
- 1:53:37Speaker 7: you know, help the blocking out a little bit. And
- 1:53:40Speaker 7: I do think they got a little predictable. I think
- 1:53:42Speaker 7: they ran the ball on a predominant amount of first downs.
- 1:53:45Speaker 7: And I think all they did was set up second
- 1:53:48Speaker 7: and nine, you know, throughout the game.
- 1:53:50Speaker 14: I would say that, you know, there's a lot going
- 1:53:52Speaker 14: around about like their their personnel being predictable, like the
- 1:53:57Speaker 14: fullback or Mac Collins being on the field.
- 1:53:59Speaker 11: It's run plays with Mac Collins. I think every.
- 1:54:02Speaker 14: Team has personnel that they use in certain situations that
- 1:54:06Speaker 14: you could probably develop tells like that or like kind
- 1:54:10Speaker 14: of trends like that. We just like hyper fixate on
- 1:54:13Speaker 14: the ones with the Patriots.
- 1:54:14Speaker 5: Like why blame you on your milk?
- 1:54:15Speaker 14: If you went and studied another team's offense, every time
- 1:54:20Speaker 14: they brought in their blocking receivers or their second tight
- 1:54:24Speaker 14: end or their fullback, I'm sure they run the ball 75%
- 1:54:27Speaker 14: of the time, too, with the fullback on the field.
- 1:54:30Speaker 14: We just hyper-fixate on the Patriots, and so that's what
- 1:54:33Speaker 14: it is. But I agree with all of what he's
- 1:54:36Speaker 14: talking about in terms of the scheme of the run game.
- 1:54:38Speaker 14: I think they need to be more creative with how
- 1:54:41Speaker 14: they're running the football.
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: And you've always been a proponent of motion.
- 1:54:44Speaker 5: He loves the eye candy.
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:54:47Speaker 11: Yeah, it's just hard. It makes it hard to defend.
- 1:54:49Speaker 4: Was that 22 or 23 where it was like motion
- 1:54:52Speaker 4: rate was our big like.
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: That was the bugaboo. Yeah.
- 1:54:55Speaker 14: And I think motion, you know, there's positive and negatives.
- 1:54:58Speaker 14: I think one of the hard parts about motion is
- 1:55:00Speaker 14: it's all on the quarterback to get all that kind
- 1:55:02Speaker 14: of stuff started. Like you have to like time it
- 1:55:05Speaker 14: up with the play clock and the cadence and all
- 1:55:07Speaker 14: this different things. So there's some guys that are, that
- 1:55:11Speaker 14: bogs them down. That makes it, it's too much responsibility
- 1:55:14Speaker 14: and it makes it harder. Like Aaron Rogers is one
- 1:55:16Speaker 14: of those guys that hates motion. Like, he says, you know, well,
- 1:55:20Speaker 14: I'm not doing it because it's just too much maestro-ing
- 1:55:23Speaker 14: before the ball is snapped.
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: I'm not doing it.
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: I won't do it. All right, let's clean up the phones.
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: I've got to leave because I've got to call. Mark's
- 1:55:31Speaker 2: in Connecticut.
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: What's up, Mark?
- 1:55:32Speaker 3: Hey, guys. How are we doing today?
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: Hey, Mark.
- 1:55:35Speaker 5: Hi, Mark.
- 1:55:37Speaker 3: So I just feel like, you know, it's been a
- 1:55:39Speaker 3: while since the James Devlin heyday of when we could
- 1:55:43Speaker 3: just play big bully football and just run it up
- 1:55:46Speaker 3: the gut. And I thought bringing in Reggie Gilliman was
- 1:55:50Speaker 3: going to bring us back to those days. And I just,
- 1:55:53Speaker 3: the first game, I didn't really see him much. And
- 1:55:56Speaker 3: I'm just wondering, is there something going on with why
- 1:56:00Speaker 3: they're not running with him a lot? It just seems,
- 1:56:05Speaker 3: like the other caller said, very predictable. You know, they're
- 1:56:08Speaker 3: always trying to run it into our own guys. Like, literally,
- 1:56:11Speaker 3: the running back is running into their own guys. and
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: I just don't see any off-tackle runs, any wide-zone runs.
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: I'm just not seeing any... kind of explosive run plays
- 1:56:22Speaker 3: at all. So I just wanted to get your guys'
- 1:56:24Speaker 3: take on that.
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: Thanks, Mark.
- 1:56:26Speaker 14: I think they did do some off-tackle, wide-zone stuff in
- 1:56:29Speaker 14: this game. Obviously, they run a lot of duo. Gilliam
- 1:56:34Speaker 14: didn't play a ton. I didn't think this was a
- 1:56:36Speaker 14: great debut from him. It's going to fly under the
- 1:56:38Speaker 14: radar compared to, like, Romeo Dobbs, obviously, who is the
- 1:56:42Speaker 14: full-back blocking well, is not really high on the list
- 1:56:45Speaker 14: of things people are watching.
- 1:56:46Speaker 11: Didn't play a ton. In this game, I thought there was.
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: Do you know snaps? How many pins?
- 1:56:50Speaker 11: It was like.
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: I want to say it was like.
- 1:56:53Speaker 5: 14?
- 1:56:53Speaker 11: Yeah, I wanted to say like 15.
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: You're watching this game coming up.
- 1:56:55Speaker 11: I wanted to see a little bit more out of him, too.
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: We're going to be the hammer. Sal's in Hartford. What's up, Sal?
- 1:57:02Speaker 9: Hey, how you guys doing?
- 1:57:03Speaker 25: I'll be quick. I know the show's winding down. Evan,
- 1:57:06Speaker 25: by the way, regarding the playbooks, as an attorney, I
- 1:57:09Speaker 25: would advise you to take a fifth and don't say
- 1:57:11Speaker 25: anything more than you already said.
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:57:15Speaker 25: Now, regarding Dobbs, You know, everything has been about the
- 1:57:18Speaker 25: fact that he dropped that ball, and obviously so. My
- 1:57:21Speaker 25: concern with him is, you know, is he soft? I mean,
- 1:57:25Speaker 25: in Boston, New York, Philly, the media is a lot
- 1:57:28Speaker 25: more aggressive than it is in Green Bay. I always
- 1:57:31Speaker 25: have these visions of, like, Edgar Renteria coming to the
- 1:57:34Speaker 25: Red Sox and then failing in Boston under the heat,
- 1:57:37Speaker 25: goes back to St. Louis and does well again. Do
- 1:57:40Speaker 25: you think he can fight back? Do you think he's
- 1:57:42Speaker 25: tough enough to deal with the pressure?
- 1:57:44Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good question.
- 1:57:46Speaker 5: He's not the first person to bring this up.
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: Yeah, we talked about it earlier in the show. I
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: think the Patriots management coaching step needs to recognize that,
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: and I think they need to sit down with him
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: and talk about, like I said, the equilibrium. You know,
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: the lows shouldn't be so low and the highs don't
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: need to be so high. Kind of keep it in
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: the middle there. And like I said, I think sports
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: psychiatry is more important now than it ever was in sports.
- 1:58:12Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:58:12Speaker 14: Bought a loud mouse on Twitter that you didn't have
- 1:58:15Speaker 14: 20 years ago.
- 1:58:16Speaker 2: What a noise. Right.
- 1:58:17Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: There's a way.
- 1:58:18Speaker 5: A lot of noise.
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: More ways for fans to get to you.
- 1:58:22Speaker 4: That was some choice that is that a lot of
- 1:58:24Speaker 4: guys aren't used to how here it's relentless.
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: And you turn on that radio, you never know what
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: you might hear.
- 1:58:29Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: Alright, that's going to be it for this edition of
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: Patriots Unfiltered. I appreciate all the calls, all the emails.
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: You guys brought it today. I know we didn't get
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: to a fraction of the emails, but appreciate it. Don't forget,
- 1:58:42Speaker 2: next week, PU, 11 to 1 every day, Catch-22. Two shows,
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: 10 to 11, Tuesdays and Thursdays. But tomorrow, Catch-22 is
