- 0:25Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:31Amen, Amen. Thank.
- 0:33You Pastor Bob? Yeah.
- 0:36Bro, OK, tonight we're in. The Gospel of Luke chapter.
- 0:43Seven. I'm Pastor Bob Clay Camp.
- 0:46I'm one of the. Assistant pastors here.
- 0:49So if. You will turn in your Bibles.
- 0:52To Luke chapter. Seven we're going to be looking
- 0:55at. A section.
- 0:57Verses 36 to 50. Tonight and a while back, just a
- 1:04couple weeks ago, it was on my heart to just.
- 1:10Look at the gospel of. Luke again and look at it.
- 1:12Fresh I talked about this. Earlier, but there's something
- 1:18about asking the Lord to bring in a new breath, a new life.
- 1:25As you're reading the Gospels. Just to see Jesus.
- 1:29Once again, not for how you even remember, but.
- 1:33What does the text say? What is being spoken and
- 1:37understanding that? The Bible says that the.
- 1:40Holy Spirit moved upon holy men of.
- 1:42God to write those. Things that are in the.
- 1:45Scripture and so. Out of all the many things that
- 1:49Jesus. Did.
- 1:51These are. Things that the Holy Spirit
- 1:53wanted to us to know and here we are in the 21st century, which
- 1:57is quite amazing and. God has protected his word
- 2:02through the. Centuries through all the
- 2:04attempts of man to destroy it and the attempts of Satan to
- 2:08destroy. It here we.
- 2:10Have it in such abundance, and yet to whom much is given, much
- 2:14is. Required and so as I.
- 2:18Started again with the gospel. Of Luke it it's.
- 2:21Almost like the very first. Part of it just.
- 2:25Began to speak to me and we know that Luke the beloved physician
- 2:34became a travelling companion of.
- 2:36The Apostle Paul. Especially at the end of his
- 2:39third missionary journey and Luke accompanied.
- 2:43Paul all the way back. Into Jerusalem.
- 2:46He was there to witness. Paul's Incarceration by the
- 2:51Romans and then being sent. To the coastal.
- 2:54Town of Caesarea for two years And So what was?
- 2:59Luke to do. And it's believed by many Bible
- 3:02commentators. That it was during that two year
- 3:04period where? Paul was incarcerated in
- 3:07Caesarea on the coast that Luke went around and obtained first
- 3:13hand testimony. Of those who were there, those
- 3:17who watched it, those who heard. Him.
- 3:20And so when you're reading the Gospel of Luke.
- 3:23You are. Reading this special account
- 3:26that of him going around, how else do you explain the detail
- 3:30on John the Baptist in the detail on on how how the Angel
- 3:35Gabriel came to Mary? I want you to.
- 3:40Flip back over to Chapter. One of Luke.
- 3:43Because here's what he said. I know, I brought.
- 3:45This out last week, but it's worth.
- 3:46Mentioning again and Luke chapter one verses one to four,
- 3:51he writes, in as much as many have taken in hand to set an
- 3:55order, a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled
- 3:59among us, just as those who from the beginning, where
- 4:02eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, delivered them to us.
- 4:08It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding
- 4:12of all things from the very first.
- 4:15Not that he was there personally, but he talked.
- 4:18To those who were there to write.
- 4:21To you, an orderly account, most excellent.
- 4:24Theophilus. That you may know the certainty
- 4:27of those things in which you. Were instructed.
- 4:31So this is Luke's. Discipleship, where he puts all
- 4:36this together. As kind of a discipleship.
- 4:38Tool for this. Person whose name was Theophilus
- 4:42and most excellent is is an. Official title, so it's
- 4:46possible. He was among the Roman
- 4:51aristocracy we don't know for. Sure, but we're sure glad he
- 4:56wrote it. And I'm sure.
- 4:57Glad that we have it with us. And there are events that Luke
- 5:03puts in his gospel that you don't find in the other three
- 5:06Gospels, and our text tonight is one of those.
- 5:10Events verses 36 to 50 in Chapter 7.
- 5:15And we're going to see here in the in our.
- 5:16Text that's an. Account of an unusual experience
- 5:20where Jesus was invited to dine at the home of a Pharisee named
- 5:26Simon. And in the midst of the dinner,
- 5:29this uninvited woman bursts into the.
- 5:32Courtyard. And caused quite a scene.
- 5:38But Jesus could see. What was going on?
- 5:42Where? Others.
- 5:43Who? Were at the table.
- 5:44Couldn't see because. Jesus has this way of.
- 5:48Seeing right into people's hearts, not just this uninvited
- 5:53woman. But also the heart of.
- 5:56Simon. He saw his heart as.
- 5:59Well, and so we're going to see here that this sinful woman.
- 6:06That's talked about here. Has such a dynamic freedom in
- 6:12her forgiveness that she. Just has to pour out her worship
- 6:17of the. Lord.
- 6:20And quite the opposite was true of Simon and the fellas that he
- 6:25invited to the dinner. So we're going to see this
- 6:27tonight and and if you're taking notes what I'm going to do.
- 6:31Is take this text. And divide it into 3.
- 6:33Parts. The first part is called the.
- 6:37Rude intrusion. The rude intrusion.
- 6:40That's. Verses 36 to 30.
- 6:42Nine and we're going to. Explore each of these three.
- 6:46The second part is the revealing illustration, and that's.
- 6:51Verses 40 to 43. And the final.
- 6:55Part the response of Great. Forgiveness verses 44 to. 50.
- 7:01So follow along with me as. I read through the text.
- 7:05And then we'll start. With the word of prayer.
- 7:09Luke Chapter 7, verse 30. 6. Then one of the Pharisees asked
- 7:14him to eat with him and he went to the.
- 7:17Pharisees House. And sat down to eat and behold.
- 7:22A woman in the city who was a Sinner when she knew.
- 7:26That Jesus sat at the. Table in the Pharisees, House
- 7:30brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil and stood at his
- 7:36feet behind him, weeping, and she began to wash his feet with
- 7:41her tears and wipe them with. The hair of her head.
- 7:46And she kissed his feet and anointed them with the fragrant
- 7:49oil. Now when the Pharisee who had
- 7:52invited him saw. This he spoke to.
- 7:55Himself saying, this man, if he were a prophet, would know who
- 8:00and what man or a woman this is who is touching him, for she is
- 8:04a Sinner. And Jesus answered and said to
- 8:08him, Simon, I have something to. Say to you so, he said.
- 8:12Teacher, say it. There were.
- 8:15There was. A certain.
- 8:15Creditor who had two debtors. One owed 500 denarii, and the
- 8:20other 50, and when they had nothing with which to repay he
- 8:24frank, he freely forgave them both.
- 8:27Tell me, therefore, which of them will love him more?
- 8:31Simon answered and said, I suppose the one whom he gave
- 8:36forgave more, and he said to him.
- 8:38You have rightly judged. Then he turned to the woman and
- 8:43said to Simon, Do you see this woman?
- 8:46I entered your house. You gave me no water for my
- 8:50feet, but she has washed my. Feet with her tears.
- 8:54And wiped them with. The hair of her head.
- 8:57You gave me no. KISS but this.
- 9:00Woman has not ceased to kiss my feet since the time I came in.
- 9:06You did not anoint my whole my head with oil, but this woman
- 9:10has anointed my feet with fragrant oil, therefore.
- 9:15I say to you her. Sins, which are many, are
- 9:19forgiven, for she loved much, but to whom little is forgiven,
- 9:25the same loves little. Then he said to her, your sins
- 9:29are forgiven, and those who sat at the table with them began to
- 9:33say to themselves. Who is this?
- 9:35Who? Even forgive sins then, he said
- 9:38to the woman. Your faith has saved you.
- 9:41Go in peace, Father in heaven, We're asking that.
- 9:45You would speak to our hearts? Through this incident recorded
- 9:48by Luke here in his gospel, this isn't just information or a
- 9:55random. Story.
- 9:57There's a purpose. That this is included and we
- 10:01believe that the same Holy Spirit who inspired Luke to
- 10:05include this account once the minister to us this evening.
- 10:12And so help us have ears to. Hear and eyes to see what's
- 10:16going on here and search our hearts, we invite.
- 10:19You to search our hearts, God. See if there be any wicked way
- 10:23in US and lead us in the way everlasting.
- 10:27And we set this time before you in Jesus name.
- 10:31Amen. Well, let's launch into.
- 10:33This verse 36. Then one of the.
- 10:37Pharisees. Asked Jesus.
- 10:40To eat with him. And he went to the Pharisee's
- 10:43house and sat down to eat. Now when you're looking.
- 10:46At this text the 1st. Thing you want to.
- 10:48Observe is who is there. We know, of course, it's Simon
- 10:53the Pharisee. We know him by name.
- 10:56And then there's this unnamed woman which?
- 10:59Throughout the whole. Text.
- 11:01There's not a name given to her at all and then there.
- 11:04Were those who were seated at the table.
- 11:07There were other guests that. Simon had invited.
- 11:11We don't. See the disciples mentioned
- 11:13here. And So what we're doing is we're
- 11:17observing the text a little bit and just putting some.
- 11:19Pieces together. So, Jesus.
- 11:23Was invited by this. Pharisee that Jesus didn't.
- 11:27Like burst in and say, hey, I'm going to your house for dinner.
- 11:30No, this Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him.
- 11:36But I have a hunch that Jesus. Knew it was a setup.
- 11:41And you know. Why did he go?
- 11:45Because. If he sensed in in Simon's.
- 11:49Heart that that there was just this disbelief.
- 11:53And cynical attitude. Why did he?
- 11:56Even bother to go, Well, the answer is.
- 12:00Simple, because the Holy Spirit. Prompted him to step into.
- 12:05It it was the will of the Father for Jesus.
- 12:08To go into this Pharisees home. Without his disciples, Jesus.
- 12:16Said in the Gospel of John, the things I see the.
- 12:19Father, do that. I do.
- 12:21And the things I. Hear the father say.
- 12:24Those are the things I. Say that way Jesus could say he.
- 12:29That hath seen me, has seen the Father in heaven.
- 12:34And so the Father wanted. Jesus to actually go.
- 12:38Into this situation that was going to be awkward and
- 12:41uncomfortable, and there are times in our life in the same
- 12:47way where things we would normally avoid.
- 12:51We are sensing the Holy Spirit wanting us to go and enter the
- 12:56situation even though you know it's not going to be comfortable
- 13:01and it's not going to. Be easy.
- 13:04But you got, you have. This strong impression that I'm
- 13:07supposed. To do this and so.
- 13:09Rather than reasoning yourself out of it, rationalizing
- 13:12yourself away from it. You just do it.
- 13:16You just take the step and do it.
- 13:20And so Jesus was. Obedient, and he went to.
- 13:23This these Pharisees. House now the text says he sat
- 13:28down to eat. And that's unfortunate because
- 13:32although it communicates that. He.
- 13:34He. Came to the table and and ate
- 13:36with them. It's not the customary.
- 13:39Way they ate. Was sitting around a table.
- 13:41Like we do. You have, maybe it's interesting
- 13:45you have maybe a table that was maybe 2 feet high and then you
- 13:51had. Pillows or low?
- 13:52Benches and you actually reclined.
- 13:55Up to the table. With your feet out toward the
- 13:59back. And and you would.
- 14:01Hold up yourself with your left. Elbow on the table and you would
- 14:04eat with your right hand and so that was customary.
- 14:09That's that's how they ate. It was a very.
- 14:11Casual time where you could talk to one another.
- 14:15You're right there. And I just challenge you.
- 14:18Next time you invite somebody to dinner, try that.
- 14:21I mean, you know, set it up. Don't tell them ahead of time.
- 14:26So just set it up. You know, a load.
- 14:28A low. Table and then put pillows or or
- 14:31benches all around on the on maybe.
- 14:33Three sides of it. And then say OK, today we're
- 14:36going to. Do.
- 14:38A culinary experience and then have them take off their.
- 14:42Shoes and it's good because their.
- 14:44Feet are away from the. Food.
- 14:45OK, so so. And then?
- 14:47And then have them lie down on the pillows.
- 14:51And then put their left elbow on the table and set foods that
- 14:55like finger foods or you can dip.
- 14:57Because that's what they did. They they took and they dipped
- 14:59it in the SOP and they ate it and all.
- 15:02Why not? All they can do is leave and you
- 15:05got the rest of the food to yourself now.
- 15:12What did this look like? Back in these days.
- 15:17Dwellings, especially for those more well, to.
- 15:20Do were built. Around an open courtyard.
- 15:24It's kind of like this. It was built around an open
- 15:26courtyard and the entry was from the street.
- 15:30And so it's believed by many Bible commentators that this
- 15:34dent dinner. Was set up.
- 15:36In the courtyard and, as was customary at the time, also.
- 15:41They had the opening. Was there so that?
- 15:45People passing. By especially if there was a
- 15:48rabbi or a teacher. There, and he was sharing.
- 15:52About the law or what this look like people could that were.
- 15:57Passing by could stop and and eavesdrop and listen in and so
- 16:03that kind of gives. You a little visual picture of
- 16:06what Very. Likely was going on here in this
- 16:09Pharisees house. The the dining was set up in the
- 16:13open courtyard. And then verse 37 And behold, a
- 16:22woman in the city who was a Sinner when she knew that Jesus
- 16:25sat at the table in the Pharisees house, brought an
- 16:28alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at his feet behind
- 16:33him, weeping. And she began to wash his feet
- 16:37with her tears and wipe them with the hair of her head.
- 16:40And she kissed his feet and anointed them with the fragrant
- 16:43oil. Now this is one of the most
- 16:48unusual things we've read, so. Far, because if he was sitting
- 16:54at the table. How'd she get under the?
- 16:56Table to do. This, I mean, you know, that's
- 16:58that's why this makes sense. How that she could do this?
- 17:04The woman remains unnamed, although there are some a few
- 17:10Bible commentators that want to identify this unnamed woman with
- 17:14Mary Magdalene and it is interesting that in the next
- 17:19verses chapter 8 verses one to three.
- 17:23Especially in verse two it says uncertain woman who had been.
- 17:27Healed of evil spirits. And infirmities Mary called
- 17:30Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, and Joanna the
- 17:35wife. Of Accusa.
- 17:37Herod Stewart. And Susanna and many.
- 17:39Others who provided. For him of their substance, and
- 17:43yet Mary Magdalene being such an important.
- 17:46Disciple of Jesus to have. Her unnamed here seems.
- 17:51A bit unlikely because even Simon is named and so you
- 17:56wonder. I wonder if Luke ran into Simon
- 18:00because usually the names weren't included.
- 18:05But. His name was Simon the.
- 18:08Pharisee. She was a.
- 18:12Woman in the city and was a known Sinner.
- 18:16We don't know the details. But the the way the text reads
- 18:22is her lifestyle was. One known in the city and that
- 18:26she was a Sinner, which is a notorious Sinner and and most
- 18:33commentators believe that it probably included prostitution
- 18:38and given the Roman soldier presence in the area.
- 18:41Possibly this? Was one way for her to make a
- 18:43living to. Support her life.
- 18:46But the text doesn't say how long she had been doing this
- 18:51long enough to for. Her to have a.
- 18:53Reputation in the city and you know it is sometimes we.
- 18:58We so easily judge people that are.
- 19:01Living a sinful life lifestyle and we forget the story behind
- 19:07what led them to even be involved.
- 19:09With this. This woman was a little girl at
- 19:12one point. What happened in her life?
- 19:16That brought her to. This kind of a life, her life
- 19:20being in shambles, the defilement of her heart shredded
- 19:24from the many sins as Jesus noted.
- 19:27How did he know he didn't know her?
- 19:31But it was a. Word of Knowledge from the Holy.
- 19:33Spirit as he. Understood by the Holy Spirit
- 19:37who this woman was. And what she had lived.
- 19:41Through and the condition of her life.
- 19:46She kept up her. Promiscuous manner of life.
- 19:49To try to bury the. Pain of the repercussions of her
- 19:53sins, one. After the other year after year.
- 20:02Sometimes we forget the journey that people.
- 20:08Have had to go through and how easy it is to want to
- 20:12anesthesize, dull the pain of the shrapnel of the sinful life
- 20:21that we're living. And so the repercussion happens
- 20:25and then we go and try to cover it with more sin.
- 20:31And just like addiction, it takes more and more and more.
- 20:36To try to dull the pain of a life that's collapsing and
- 20:41falling apart and hopeless and defiled and that.
- 20:47Was the life of this woman trying so?
- 20:52Hard to bury her brokenness with.
- 20:54More brokenness of sinful behavior she may not have had.
- 20:59Outward, Outward tattoos on her body that represented hopeless
- 21:03events in her life. But.
- 21:05She certainly had painful tattoos burned on her heart from
- 21:09all the sin and the destruction. My grandson had this tattoo on
- 21:16his on his shoulder and he was proud of it until he went and
- 21:21enlisted to the Marines and it happened to be the wrong kind of
- 21:27tattoo and so. He had to go back to the tattoo
- 21:31place and have it blotted out and turned into something else.
- 21:38But tattoos on the heart? Nothing you can do in this life
- 21:45can blot out those. Tattoos.
- 21:48They're indelible marks the the thumbprints of sin that's left
- 21:54in your heart and how it. Affects your life.
- 21:58Except that the blood of Jesus can blot out the tattoos of your
- 22:05heart. Psalm 51, verse one.
- 22:09David cries out. Have mercy upon me, O God,
- 22:13according to your loving kindness, according to the
- 22:16multitude of your tender mercies.
- 22:19Blot out my transgressions, and then later on in verses 9 and 10
- 22:26of Psalm 51 hide your face from my sins and blot out all my
- 22:32iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O
- 22:36God, and renew a steadfast. Spirit within me, Do you know
- 22:42that when you surrender? Your life to Jesus Christ, He
- 22:45gives you a new. Heart.
- 22:50The old hard heart of stone, the one that has all that deep
- 22:55impression of sin. He blots out your
- 22:58transgressions. You're forgiven.
- 23:02You're given a new. Heart that.
- 23:05That's the core of your being. The.
- 23:07The power center, you might say of.
- 23:10This life, how did the women? How did the woman know?
- 23:16Jesus was to dine at the Pharisees house and this is kind
- 23:19of fascinating because in in searching some of the
- 23:23background. Here there are a few Bible
- 23:27commentators and putting together a timeline of the
- 23:30events. Of Jesus life.
- 23:32Put this right after Jesus said in Matthew 1120. 8 to 30 come to
- 23:40me. All you who labor and are heavy
- 23:44laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn
- 23:50from me, For I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will
- 23:56find. Rest for your souls, for my yoke
- 24:01is easy and my burden is. Light.
- 24:06If that's true, it's almost. As if she took the words and
- 24:12made them hers. And she followed him from a
- 24:16distance, watching, and she finds him here in the city,
- 24:22entering into this Pharisees house.
- 24:26And so she came and. Watched it because it says here
- 24:30in the. Text in verse 37 when she knew.
- 24:35That Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisees house.
- 24:39She brought an alabaster box and so.
- 24:42She It's like it. It wasn't too long.
- 24:45Before everybody was all settled.
- 24:47Simon proper Simon there. And then the guest, you know,
- 24:50reclining all around the table. And then all of a sudden this
- 24:55woman comes in that everybody knows her background and and all
- 25:04of a sudden she breaks down crying.
- 25:08She's so overcome, overcome an emotion by the.
- 25:12Reality of her many sins completely lifted off from her.
- 25:19That it says that she wept in verse 38.
- 25:23She stood at his feet behind him, weeping.
- 25:27I want you to know. That this word weeping doesn't
- 25:30just mean a shedding a tear or two.
- 25:34This word Weeping. Is the word that's also defined
- 25:40as mourning, wailing, convulsively sobbing.
- 25:49Now I confess that more and more the.
- 25:54Older I get. I find myself tearing up at
- 25:57stupid Hallmark movies and it's embarrassing.
- 26:03It's just embarrassing. But but you know when the horse
- 26:08dies man, it just gets to me and.
- 26:12Or when the dog dies. I mean, there was a time in in
- 26:17the Tom Hanks movie where in the movie Finch where?
- 26:22He ends up dying from radiation and the dog and the trailer is
- 26:25going at that moment and I'm just going, Oh my gosh.
- 26:29You know, Stupid, stupid, stupid.
- 26:34And my wife knows that, I mean, you know.
- 26:37It's it's OK but in front of other people and wear sunglasses
- 26:40and. But this is this.
- 26:43Weeping here is different. This weeping here is from
- 26:49brokenness, heartbreak, shame, loss, guilt, Convulsively
- 27:02weeping. I don't know if you've.
- 27:03Ever had a situation happen in your life where there's been
- 27:08such a tragic loss? That it grabs your gut and you
- 27:15can't stop crying and you can't believe how much water your eyes
- 27:22can put out and all the stuff that comes out of your nose.
- 27:27It's just doesn't stop and you can hardly breathe.
- 27:32That's. This word it's important to
- 27:38understand that. Because Jesus saw this woman in
- 27:45a way that Simon did not, nor did any.
- 27:48Of the other guests, all they saw was her outward disgusting
- 27:54life in their self righteousness.
- 28:00And think about it. When something happens, when
- 28:04you're when you're visiting and you're around the table, and
- 28:07then something drastic happens, all the conversation stops.
- 28:13And so there was silence in the courtyard, had to have been
- 28:17silence in the courtyard, except for this convulsive sobbing.
- 28:24And nobody knows. What to do except Jesus?
- 28:32She is standing at his feet, verse 38, weeping, and she began
- 28:39to wash. His feet with her tears and wipe
- 28:45them with the. Hair of her head.
- 28:49You know what this means, That the dirt and the filth that was
- 28:55on Jesus feet from walking through life, she took upon
- 29:02herself on her hair. I mean, there was no.
- 29:06Dial soap there. It was just her tears.
- 29:10Salty water. But there was so much water she.
- 29:17Wiped his feet with the hair of her head, which by the way, she
- 29:23didn't have short hair because this wouldn't have worked.
- 29:26It had to have been longer hair, especially given her reputation.
- 29:30Maybe. But I want you to think about
- 29:34this. She took upon herself the dirt
- 29:39from. Jesus the reproach she would she
- 29:45wanted to identify with him and. So his reproach was born by her
- 29:54in her hair it's. Called taking the reproach of
- 29:58Christ. That's what it reminds me of,
- 30:03and how often we are reluctant to.
- 30:05Take the reproach of Christ upon ourselves because of when the
- 30:10world hates Jesus, you know. He He hates you.
- 30:14The world hates you, and so not only is she weeping
- 30:22convulsively, she is wiping his feet.
- 30:27With her hair and they're watching this and then she's
- 30:35kissing his feet actually non-stop and then anointing
- 30:41taking. The The possible, the little
- 30:44vial of fragrant oil that many of the women wore at that time,
- 30:49and broke it open and poured it on his feet and that.
- 30:55Oil. The fragrant oil filled the
- 30:58courtroom. I mean, you ever been in an
- 31:01elevator where somebody has lost their sense of smell and uses
- 31:05half a bottle of English leather and and all the sudden you're
- 31:09stuck in an elevator and you can hardly breathe and then your
- 31:13nose starts going and your eyes start watering because you can
- 31:15hardly. Breathe because the the person
- 31:18has lost his sense of smell. Sorry if that's your.
- 31:22I mean, we used to when I was in junior high, it was high karate
- 31:25and Jade E you know way back a long time ago.
- 31:33I'm not even sure where that came from.
- 31:34But it just dated me. I don't know, you can probably
- 31:39buy it on eBay or something. Whatever.
- 31:44But but the whole scene is is just full of of interesting
- 31:50dynamic. Everybody's silent.
- 31:55They don't know what. To say.
- 32:01And while the silence and the sobbing was going on, the
- 32:04Pharisee said within himself, verse 39, he spoke to himself.
- 32:11This man if he. Were a prophet would know who
- 32:14and what man or a woman this is who's touching him for she's a
- 32:18Sinner. Pharisee was appalled by this in
- 32:23his own self righteousness. Not only could he not.
- 32:27See who Jesus was. He couldn't even understand this
- 32:33woman, judging so much by just her reputation and how
- 32:39disgusting and. And actually, the Pharisees did
- 32:42not want to touch anybody who was a known Sinner, because it
- 32:46would defile them, and so they. Would keep their clothes away if
- 32:49they passed by those who were known sinners always being so
- 32:53proper and and tight. And here was this woman kissing
- 32:59Jesus feet over and over and over.
- 33:04Let's go to Part 2, verses 40 to 43.
- 33:09Jesus isn't saying anything up to now, and as a matter of fact,
- 33:13there's an indication that he hasn't even stopped to look at
- 33:16the woman. Or pulled his feet away.
- 33:19He just waited for the Holy Spirit to give him understanding
- 33:28and to know what the next thing should do.
- 33:33So here's what he says. Verse 40, Simon, I I have
- 33:38something to say to you. And man, if I were Jesus, I'd
- 33:41say you better believe I have something to say to you, you
- 33:45know? But no, no, He's very kind.
- 33:47I mean think. About his guests are there, so
- 33:49he's very kind and tactful and how he approaches.
- 33:52This Simon, I have something to say to you.
- 33:56And Simon said teacher say it's not that.
- 33:59He really saw Jesus as a super teacher, but he was just being
- 34:03gracious, you know, Go ahead, Fine, I'm annoyed by everything
- 34:08but go. Ahead there was a certain
- 34:15creditor who had two debtors, one OD 500 denarii and the other
- 34:18fifty. A denarii was a day's.
- 34:21Wage So, and let's put that in today's amount.
- 34:27Let's say you earn $20.00 an hour.
- 34:29Just for a a figure times 8 hours a day, times 5 days, times
- 34:354.3 weeks in a month, times 12 months, that's $41,280 a year.
- 34:44Well, this was 500. Days wage.
- 34:46This is over an over a year. So just for the sake of rounding
- 34:51it off, that's 50 grand, $50,000.
- 34:56Is owed to this debtor, A creditor rather, and so the
- 35:03other guy is only 10% of that amount, 5000.
- 35:06Dollars. And so when they had nothing
- 35:09with which to repay, he frankly forgave them both.
- 35:14I don't know about you, but if somebody waved off my $50,000
- 35:18debt, paid off my car, I don't have a 50,000.
- 35:21Dollar car, by the way. But that's the average cost of a
- 35:24new. Car today what?
- 35:27And just said it's yours better than Wheel of Fortune.
- 35:35You'd be excited, but it was just five grand.
- 35:38You'd go well, OK, well, thanks. I appreciate that.
- 35:41She has a different reaction. And that's that's the point.
- 35:45Jesus is trying to point out plus.
- 35:47Verse 42 said they had nothing. With which to repay.
- 35:51So that means you. You've lost your job, you have
- 35:54no income, you've been a subject of identity theft and everything
- 36:00is gone. You have no relatives that have
- 36:02any money, and so you. Are broke with all capital
- 36:05letters. And he says, you know, just
- 36:11forget it. And so then he says to Simon,
- 36:18tell me, therefore, which of them will love him more.
- 36:22Well, Simon answered, I suppose. I mean, just what a snob.
- 36:28I mean, I can just see him like lifting a business.
- 36:31Well, I suppose it's like dude slap, you know, I suppose the
- 36:38one whom he forgave more and Jesus said to him.
- 36:43You have rightly judged. Now notice.
- 36:45The graciousness for the sake of the woman.
- 36:53And then? The third part here tonight,
- 36:57verse 44. Then he turned to the woman and
- 37:00said to Simon, Do you see this woman?
- 37:06That phrase, that sentence is so telling.
- 37:12Because he didn't see the woman, but Jesus saw her.
- 37:19And here's. What?
- 37:19He said. I entered your house.
- 37:22You gave me no water for my feet, but she has washed my feet
- 37:27with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.
- 37:30It was customary when you invited somebody to dinner and
- 37:34they came to the door. The servant of the house would
- 37:37remove the sandals from the guest and then have a a basin of
- 37:42water there and wash. The feet to refresh them?
- 37:46Not so, no, they won't get the carpet dirty.
- 37:48Nothing like. That, but it was just an act of
- 37:50refreshing, A kindness, A hospitality.
- 37:57But this but Simon the Pharisee didn't even give.
- 37:59Jesus, that hospitality. So you can.
- 38:03Tell he wasn't that it. It wasn't that he was looking to
- 38:09have answers, but he was looking to.
- 38:11Accuse you gave me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to
- 38:19kiss my feet since the time I came in.
- 38:23And of course, after the foot washing, then there'd be the
- 38:26greeting, you know, kissing first on the right cheek and
- 38:28then the left. Cheek or however your culture
- 38:31does it. Kiss of greeting, greeting,
- 38:35greeting. And then thirdly, you did not
- 38:39anoint my head with oil, but this woman has anointed my feet
- 38:43with fragrant oil, and often times when a guest would come in
- 38:47after the foot washing and then after the greeting of kissing on
- 38:51both cheeks, then the host. Would take a dab of fragrant oil
- 38:56and and put it on the guest. Just as a representation of the
- 38:59sweet fellowship. They would have together.
- 39:04Simon did none of this because he wasn't interested in hearing
- 39:10Jesus. He was interested in finding.
- 39:13Fault. Having a critical heart where
- 39:18you're always looking to find fault is not the love of God
- 39:23working in you. It's the flesh because you're
- 39:28setting up yourself as the standard of what's right.
- 39:32That's what self righteousness means, self rightness.
- 39:37You're using your own standard to be that.
- 39:41By which you judge other people and you miss the.
- 39:45Heart of God, because this Simon the Pharisee missed Jesus, God
- 39:51Incarnate, right in front of him.
- 39:55Do you see this woman? Jeremiah 17, nine through 10.
- 40:01The heart is deceitful above all.
- 40:02Things and desperately wicked who can know it?
- 40:06I, the Lord, search the heart. I test the mind even to give
- 40:11every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his
- 40:16doing, so, those. Three things, Simon pointed.
- 40:21Or Jesus pointed out to Simon that this woman did, which he
- 40:26did not do. You gave me no water for my
- 40:30feet. You gave me no kiss or friendly
- 40:32greeting. You did not anoint my head with
- 40:35oil, and I wonder as I read this I.
- 40:42Wonder if the woman looking in saw what Simon did not do to her
- 40:49Honored Lord because she did everything that Simon should
- 40:56have done. I just wonder
- 41:11by the way. Kissing the feet is the actual
- 41:16meaning of the word. Worship in the Greek Proscano to
- 41:24kiss the hand or the ground in reverence to a sovereign
- 41:32worship. When we worship the Lord and we
- 41:41give Him honor and praise from the heart, the Bible indicates.
- 41:46That it is like incense that goes up before the.
- 41:49Throne a fragrance that goes up before the.
- 41:54Throne. But when we do worship in rote
- 41:59and just sing, because we know the song and our mind is going
- 42:03elsewhere, we're not sending up any incense.
- 42:10We read in Revelation where incense came up before the
- 42:13throne. Which are which is the prayers
- 42:15of the. Saints talking about the
- 42:19believers, not those from the Catholic Church I want.
- 42:26My worship to be in spirit and in truth, because I want to send
- 42:33a fragrant incense to the throne to share my heart with my Lord.
- 42:42And that's something we always have to do a heart check.
- 42:44With, but I tell you what. The worship is so different.
- 42:51When you've gone through a season of brokenness and God has
- 42:55met you in your brokenness and the result of the fragrance that
- 43:00goes up to the. Throne is like sweet incense,
- 43:05but sometimes we have to be crushed.
- 43:07Like incense is crushed before it's lit on fire.
- 43:12I don't want to go through brokenness, but I know I'm going
- 43:16to have to. Still I have to because.
- 43:21As Andy mentioned, Pastor Andy mentioned over the weekend, you
- 43:26don't get wine until you crush the grapes.
- 43:30You don't get the incense until you crush those spices and those
- 43:35barks, and then you light it, light it on fire.
- 43:38And then the fragrance goes up. In my brokenness.
- 43:42The Lord meets me and He sets me on fire, and the fragrance goes
- 43:48up to the Lord. Verse 47 Therefore I say to you
- 43:54her. Sins which are many.
- 43:58I mean, he didn't have to say that, but I think he wanted to
- 44:02make a point of something that her debt was huge before God.
- 44:10Her sins, which are many, are. Forgiven for she loved much.
- 44:16And actually the in the Greek. The structure of verse 47 is
- 44:21therefore I. Say to you her sins, which are
- 44:24many, remain forgiven. It's not that she's earning
- 44:30forgiveness, it's she is responding out of forgiveness.
- 44:37But to whom little is forgiven. The same loves little, which was
- 44:41really. Simon and those around the
- 44:43table. Because they didn't see their
- 44:46sin in the light of God's holiness, they saw their life.
- 44:51In the light of their own obedience to the ceremonial
- 44:55rites and the commandments of men.
- 44:58And surely God will bless it. But you know, it's a lot of
- 45:01people like that today. I'm OK with God.
- 45:04I'm sure that when I get to heaven, you know he'll be
- 45:07reasonable. Nothing about the demand.
- 45:14That you must believe on the Son of God to enter into the Kingdom
- 45:17of heaven, then? He said your sins are forgiven
- 45:21you verse 49 and those who sat at the table.
- 45:24With him began to say to themselves, who was this who
- 45:27even forgive sins. Then he said to the woman, Your
- 45:31faith has saved you, Go in peace.
- 45:35Your faith in Me has saved you. Go into peace as we close.
- 45:44Here, and we ponder this text. There's.
- 45:49So many things to think about. I want to see people like Jesus
- 45:55sees. Them, I know there's that
- 45:59temptation for me to make judgments upon the outward
- 46:03appearance or upon how they what kind of a tragic life they
- 46:08lived. What kind of a person, man?
- 46:10They're just wasted. Stop it.
- 46:12Wait a minute. See people like.
- 46:15Jesus sees them because what you're.
- 46:18Seeing are symptoms of brokenness and so many people
- 46:22are trying to cover cover, cover, cover, fill it up, but
- 46:26it's like. Addiction and it's never
- 46:28satisfying. And maybe some of you here
- 46:32tonight are like that. You've been trying to just cover
- 46:36the. Pain with with more sin.
- 46:39And you're finding that it's like drinking seawater to try to
- 46:42quench your thirst. And you're dying.
- 46:48But a new heart is offered when you place your trust in Jesus
- 46:55Christ. Those of you watching online, if
- 46:59this is where you're at. Tonight God is calling you.
- 47:04It's no accident you're watching this online.
- 47:08God is calling you to to drop to.
- 47:12Your knees and say God, I. Want to be set free like this
- 47:18woman was. I don't want to be like Simon
- 47:21the Pharisee. Could you put a new heart in me?
- 47:25I trust in Jesus Christ, the Son of God who bore my sin.
- 47:29And you're offering forgiveness. And I I ask you to forgive me.
- 47:34God cleanse me. Give me a new heart.
- 47:38Not a reconditioned old model. I want a new life, a new
- 47:42creation. And God will meet you in that
- 47:45prayer, and then let the incense go up to him and worship.
- 47:55Let's close with the word of prayer together, Father God.
- 47:58We thank you for this text tonight and we ask that these
- 48:02truths as we've. Gleaned them, would burn through
- 48:06our hearts, Lord, and that we would be disciples of our Lord
- 48:11Jesus Christ, reflecting his heart.
- 48:14To the world around us, and we thank you God that nothing's too
- 48:17hard for you, no matter how long we've we've been lagging behind.
- 48:24That you'd get us and step with you.
- 48:27You're our chief shepherd, so bless as we close and worship,
- 48:33we give our hearts. To you in Jesus name.
