- 2:30proved that the accident in that rocket fuel laboratory was an accident, doctor alworths
- 2:35technician, that Leon Southoff is not a Russian spy, so the company will
- 2:38pay for the damage, and that's that. Well. The company also pay
- 2:42a claim on Leon Salkoff. Don't see why not? Now, Look,
- 2:44I gotta catch my what south Koff is dead? Johnny? It looks like
- 2:50murder. Oh, Bob Bailey in the exciting Adventures of the Man with the
- 3:01action packed expenser. Call America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator as Truly Johnny Dell and
- 3:08now act one of yours, Truly Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by Special
- 3:27Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Tri State Life and Casually Insurance Company Sarah so Outa,
- 3:30Florida, following us an account of expenses incurred during my investigation of the
- 3:35Salkoff sequel matter expense account out of one three dollars no show penalty for canceling
- 3:45the flight back to Hartford. By the time I hung up the phone on
- 3:47Todd swam Earl Porman had pulled a shiny new cat into the airport parking lot
- 3:51and we took off. I'm glad Todd Kotchie. Before he climbed aboard that
- 3:57plane, Johnny Earl, he said that le Unselkoff had been murdered. That's
- 4:01what it looks like. What happened. Actually he's just disappeared, but under
- 4:06circumstances it make it look like he's been murdered. Any idea who Johnny,
- 4:12You know as well as I do that he was pretty deep in subversive activities
- 4:15during the last War Yeah, but he's been given a clean slate, at
- 4:17least so far as our country is concerned. Right, but then wait a
- 4:21minute. If some of his old pals, and we know there are plenty
- 4:26of them in this country working for the other side, right, if they
- 4:29know he's working for us, the first thing they'd do, for the sake
- 4:31of their great and glorious cause would be to eliminate one Leon Salkoff. Yeah,
- 4:36or at the very least persuade him, and I mean torture him.
- 4:40And they're telling the formula the stuff he's helped doctor Alwood develop. Exactly where
- 4:44and how did it happen? Well, you'll have to get the detail from
- 4:46Todd. Swamp Us. Common people aren't even allowed to know where Allworth's lab
- 4:50is hidden away. You know. That's why I'm taking you to see Todd
- 4:54and drive on. Todd was waiting for us at the chamber at Commerce Building.
- 5:03He thanked Earle for dragging me in from the airport. Earl left,
- 5:06then Todd and I walked out to his car. Here Johnny used my car.
- 5:12Do you know where to go out to the lab? Yes, you
- 5:15still haven't told me what happened to Leon Salcoff because I don't know exactly.
- 5:18Doctor Alworth called me from the nearest phone down there, told me Salkoff has
- 5:21gone, that he's sure he was murdered. Have you dragged a police in
- 5:24on this. No, but I telephoned the FBI in Washington. They've promised
- 5:27to send him in all till they know I'm here. They might not want
- 5:30any interference. Well, I told them about your investigation down there at the
- 5:31lab, and they said to give you a free hand. All right,
- 5:33good, Well, I better get going, Johnny, let me know what
- 5:38you find out. Once again, I headed south and robbed forty one down
- 5:46through Fort Myers, Or I swung left on eighty two and on into the
- 5:49heart of the Everglades. I found the old wagon trail leading into the swampy
- 5:53jungle. Finally came to the shack of the Indian Benonziola. There I hopped
- 5:58aboard one of his air bows, one of those strange little contractions driven by
- 6:00an airplane cypropeller. Fifteen minutes later I pulled up at the breast covered island
- 6:05in the middle of that vast wet Soggi swamp. Doctor Alworth was standing in
- 6:10front of the well hidden laboratory. Mister Dollar, mister Dollar, I'm so
- 6:14glad you have left you. What's happened out here? Doctor, Oh it's
- 6:16been terrible, a terrible thing, like a nightmare. Here. Come inside,
- 6:23I'll show you and tell you everything I know. Oh, are living
- 6:28quarters down this car? Yeah, I remember. After you and mister Swarm
- 6:31left us yesterday, Leon and I went to work immediately to replace the rocket
- 6:35fuel additive we had lost in the accident. You investigated him, Yes,
- 6:39Oh, if only i'd paid attention when he told me about the man he'd
- 6:43seen in Fort Myers the day before, but we were so busy. Wait
- 6:46a minute, what man? Someone he'd known in Europe during the war,
- 6:49the man he suspected of now working for well, for those who'd like to
- 6:55sabotage our Come on, doctor, Look this is my room, and this
- 7:01right next to it is Leon's show. Great Scott, Yes, there must
- 7:08have been a terrible struggle. And doctor, this looks like blood on the
- 7:12floor. Now, what happened? Well, it was early this morning,
- 7:15before dawn. I heard voices in here. At first I thought Leon was
- 7:19shouting in his lead, but then he began to call for help, and
- 7:23I heard the furniture being knocked about. Well didn't you come in here?
- 7:26Something had been shoved against my door, this table, I couldn't open it.
- 7:30Then I heard the shot. I heard Leon scream with pain. Then
- 7:34another shot. Oh, terrible, terrible, come on do Then I heard
- 7:38them drag poor Leon's body away outside. But how did you get out of
- 7:43your room? By placing my bed as you see it now, I was
- 7:46able to brace my feet against it, forced the table away from my door.
- 7:49That now comes to dollar all right. I pursued them down this hall,
- 7:54but by the time I reached the outside door, they were gone.
- 7:58But unless they had an airplane, must I have hidden somewhere on the edge
- 8:01of this little island over There are a thousand places in the brush and trees
- 8:03where it could have been hidden. It d see look a thousand faces.
- 8:07I don't see Leon's airboat out here on the r they took it. That's
- 8:11why I think there was more than one of them. And now I must
- 8:13leave you. You what I must go into a telephone. I'll be back
- 8:16as soon as possible. I'll look wait a minute, doctor Rowlin, that
- 8:20you're here in charge, I must tell it phone the FBI head away.
- 8:24You've already even known of my bike. Well, I'll be dying if I'm
- 8:28gonna chase him. What's more, I doubt if I could have caught him
- 8:37in the old airboat that I had, So all right, it would give
- 8:39me a chance to look around along. Sometimes that's the best way. I
- 8:43poked around outside for a while, looking for where Leon's attackers might have concealed
- 8:46the boat they'd used, and that swamp and brush. He was like looking
- 8:50for a needle in a haystack. Then I walked back to the laboratory building.
- 8:54The front door was closed. Funny, I thought we'd left it open
- 8:58a minute ago. Oh well, huh, oh No, you don't act
- 9:11too if yours truly Johnny Dollar in a moment, now act too, if
- 9:16yours truly Johnny Dollar, and the sealkof sequel mattered. I don't know how
- 9:24long I was out after the attack on me at the hidden laboratory in the
- 9:26Emuglades, But when I came to, I was lying in aur with bed
- 9:30across the roman a desk sat a well dressed man going through files of papers
- 9:33and folders. I played possible because I wanted time to think if Leon Salkoff
- 9:37had been murdered by some versions, then this man must be one of them.
- 9:43But how had he got here without all worth knowing? Or didal with
- 9:46no after all? Now that the time to think about it. His explanation
- 9:50of what had happened at sealkoffident pretty glib and the doctor sudden departure a while
- 9:54ago to phone the FBI, he said, didn't he know that Todd Swam
- 9:58had called him? In any event, he'd run off to leave me alone
- 10:01like a sitting duck. Who was the man sitting here? And why hadn't
- 10:05he killed me when he had the chance? And I rode over and grown?
- 10:09I had felt like it was split down the middle. Oh, well,
- 10:13mister dollar, you finally come around. Yeah, yeah, I guess
- 10:16so. Whether we were quite concerned about you, we I'm terribly sorry about
- 10:22what we did to you. But until we frisked you and discovered your identity,
- 10:24who are you? Weldebremen FBI. Oh, when we found you prowling
- 10:30around, we thought you might be one of the people we hoped to trap
- 10:31here the killer of Leon Selkoff. Selkoff is not dead, mister dollar.
- 10:37What if you forgotten the case here? In Florida that you handled last year,
- 10:41Parli Baron. Yes, another scientist who apparently disappeared. Actually, we
- 10:46had arranged the whole thing so that his whereabouts would not be known while he
- 10:48continued with his nuclear research. Yeah, I remember. The report of his
- 10:52death and disappearance was to throw off our perils behind the Iron Curtain, precisely.
- 10:56So now you've done the same thing. Ouch again, I'm sorry,
- 11:01Dollar, but we didn't know who you were. We didn't want to take
- 11:03any chances, you say we, mister Fridman, my colleague Mike Krusian,
- 11:07who's in searching the laboratory. Ah for what There are two groups, agents
- 11:11from behind the Iron Curtain who would like to get to Leon Salkoff, either
- 11:16to gain the secrets he's learned in this laboratory or to get rid of him
- 11:18because of his help to this country's defense and missile programs. So if he's
- 11:22reported dead, each will think the other did it and they'll stop chasing him.
- 11:26Exactly. We had to act fast because Leon has already spotted some of
- 11:30his ex pals as you call him, in this general area. Does doctor
- 11:33Alworth know this whole thing was rigged? No? And you mustn't tell him
- 11:37he's a great scientist. But well, he might let the cat out of
- 11:41the bag. Stall him Dollar, stall for time, drag out your pretended
- 11:46investigation. It'll delay always bringing in the police, that sort of thing,
- 11:48until we can take care of Salkoff, that is, install him in his
- 11:50new place. Well maybe I'm a little muddle because of this wallop on the
- 11:54head, but I should think you'd tell everybody you can. You'd know how
- 11:56to make sure his so called death is publicized, make sure these people are
- 12:01after him will get the word. Don't worry. They know I'd stake my
- 12:03life on it. And needless to say, if any of them come out
- 12:07here, we'll be ready for them. Oh, Michael, what did you
- 12:09find? Nothing a single? Oh? Say, mister Dollar has come too,
- 12:15almost say I'm sorry about the way I just loved your dollar. Yeah,
- 12:18me too. I'm sure Walla told you. Why you find anything in
- 12:22here? Wall No, I'm afraid we'll have to go back. Oh Dollar,
- 12:26Yeah, I take you. Doctor Alworth is in on one of his
- 12:30usual all day trips for supplies. Yeah, yeah, something like that.
- 12:33We've got to leave you for a while. You have your gun, you
- 12:33know what to do if anyone suspicious comes around. Well, now, look,
- 12:37when the doctor comes back, I'll have to tell him you've been here
- 12:39fine, and that we'll be back. Well, yeah, we'll be back.
- 12:43Oh sure, well, dollar, we'll see you later. How you
- 12:46rest you need it? You're not kidding a couple of money. I felt
- 12:56so rocky. I didn't quite know what you're making it. I heard them
- 13:00leave by the other door. Then a couple of minutes later there from off
- 13:03on one side, I heard their airboat leave. Wait a minute, it
- 13:07wasn't going out by the channel I'd been given to understand was the only way
- 13:11out of this place. Strange. Painfully, I rose and walked out.
- 13:16I headached so much I could hunt. You think straight, there's something wrong
- 13:20here. Oh sure they'd left me your gun. But yeah, they left
- 13:26it with me, all right, But the chambers had been empty. My
- 13:30airboat was still where I'd parked it in front of the building too. Yeah,
- 13:37and I wouldn't start Tampa wood. Maybe. Then I heard it,
- 13:41another boat coming into the regular channel. In the distance. I could see
- 13:45there were two people in it. Quickly I crouched behind a clop of brush
- 13:48until I saw who the two men were Mac McLaughlin. Oh all right,
- 13:54dollar, Oh, I said, you're out here. Mister mc laughlin was
- 13:56already on his way when I telephoned. Why didn't you tell me the FBI
- 14:01had already been sent for mister Dowd. I tried to, but you took
- 14:05on. Lord Johnny, what happened to you? Are a couple of your
- 14:07own boys? Did this? Mikel What? Men from the Bureau? That's
- 14:09what they said. And I was so adult from this knock on the head,
- 14:13and that's impossible. What do they look like? What are their names?
- 14:16What are Breandman? For one Blenman five eleven, spice, gray hair,
- 14:20blue eyes, about one hundred and fifty pounds, mark of spectacles on
- 14:24his nonavy discripsion. And the other Michael Krushin, heavy set, maybe five
- 14:28six, about two hundred pounds, all scarb or the right eye heavy almost
- 14:33gravelly boy. Yeah, Brenman and Khrushion. So they said, we're in
- 14:37trouble, Jenny. What unless I'm completely cock eyed? Those are the boys
- 14:41who kidnapped and probably killed Leon selkov Man. I've been waiting a long time
- 14:45to catch up with them. Their real names are Brenmanoff and Krushinsky spies and
- 14:50killers from you know where, Act three of yours, truly Johnny Dollar in
- 15:05a moment and now Act three of yours, truly Johnny Dollar and the suck
- 15:09off sequel matter. Mc lachman, my old friend of the FBI, gave
- 15:24doctor Allworth a gun with instructions to lock himself into his lab and shoot on
- 15:28site anybody who set foot on the allem before we got back. Then we
- 15:31took off in the air bows briefly as possible. I told Mac, what
- 15:35did happened to be at the laboratory there in the middle of the everyway?
- 15:37Only a pair like Fredmanoff and Christians give it up the guts from person at
- 15:41FBI agents After that beating, I was too muddled even ask for their credentials.
- 15:46What I don't understand, Mac, is why they didn't kill me.
- 15:48They haven't yet learned the formula that missile fuel, so they've got to leave
- 15:52every possible door open, Johnny. But you convinced that from the bureau,
- 15:56so they think, yeah, well, the men they could go back to
- 15:58the lab after the doctor returned, maybe even get your help and obtaining the
- 16:03formula from him. Why sure, the abduction of Leon Sakoff would indicate the
- 16:07doctor himself is in danger. That's true, But if he wanted his work
- 16:11carried on, if anything should happen to him, well who better to give
- 16:15the formula two than agents of the FBI. On the way out of the
- 16:18lab, he was ready to give it to me. Hey, Mac,
- 16:21he and Kay's little visits. They're crowling through the lab and always papers.
- 16:26It means they didn't get the formula from Leon Selcoff, which probably explains their
- 16:30sudden departure. They couldn't find the formula the lab, so they'll go back
- 16:33and put the pressure on Leon again. Makes sense, Mac and I sure
- 16:37hope he's still alive. But where let's hope in all points Pulitan will help
- 16:41us catch up with him when they leave the swamp. Got to come out
- 16:45of it somewhere. They've had a big hit stern on us. Yeah,
- 16:48but this channel we're taking is the most direct route to the highway, any
- 16:51highway. They carried off their polls pretty well. They even know about that,
- 16:55piny Baron matter. I handle with you, boy, Why not the
- 16:59broadcast a whole on your radio show? It gave me Clarence or just keep
- 17:03mom about this affair half until after the boys on the East Coast launch a
- 17:07space satellite successfully. Don't worry. A few minutes later, we'd pulled up
- 17:17at bent Onciola Shack at the head of the bayou, where we'd left our
- 17:18car. Use mine, Johnny. It's better equipped than yours for whatever we
- 17:22may run into. I saw what he meant, because in the back of
- 17:25the seat was a regular arsenal. As we tore out of the jungle and
- 17:27headed south on Highway twenty nine, Max Short waved in all points to where
- 17:30we ti out on the area and to the state. Fool we're heading st
- 17:36Johnny, Because you said that's the way they left the island by airboat,
- 17:38right, Mac. But well, the way those rivers and bayous twist around
- 17:41in the swamp, they could come out anywhere. Well, I know this
- 17:44country pretty well. They'd almost have to go south to hit this or any
- 17:48other highway. You'll keep your eye field for any side roads it might lead
- 17:51into where they could land their boat, will you. And look what about
- 17:55this car that's coming at us. Man, he's really stepping on it.
- 17:57That's okay, Johnny's police Huh sure? But did you see who was driving
- 18:06it and who was sitting beside him. What Yeah, Khrushenski and our old
- 18:10pal bred mahloda your hat. They must have hurt the old point. But
- 18:17if they didn't, they're hearing it now in that car. And if that
- 18:19thing is souped up like mostly all right, boy, they won't get away
- 18:22from this old boiler. Mac wasn't kidding. How we held the road it
- 18:33over one hundred miles an hour, I'll never know. Thanks to the Saron
- 18:36on the stolen police car, the road ahead was kept clear. They must
- 18:38have recognized me though when we passed. When we finally started to pull up
- 18:41on them, they fired the first shot. I can't weave it this meet,
- 18:45Johnny stayed alone. I've loaded this gun from the stuff in the back.
- 18:48Watch put that lemon squeeze away. Good the tourmmy gun and back of
- 18:52the seat. Right, you got it, I got it all right,
- 18:57Mac, keep your hands on the wheel. Ghost boys can really shoot tog
- 19:00to the tillers. Let him have it right for the tires, Aim for
- 19:06the tires. Hold all that. You've got him. The goal off the
- 19:11road, Mac. If they hit that row of cyperate trees, they're gone
- 19:15there. Yeah, they are beyond Selkoff. Well, I'm afraid he gave
- 19:32more than his skill and efforts to the country he loved that had taken him
- 19:36under its wing. His body was found trussed up and floating face down on
- 19:38the bayou from which Brenlanoff and Krushensky had launched the airboat. Doctor Alworth,
- 19:45Well, now that the US Space Settlite is carrying out his mission, he's
- 19:48safely and officially working in the government laboratory. Expense acount total including incidentals and
- 19:52the trip back to Hartford. I'll forget it if in any way it helped
- 19:57to get the explorer out in space orbits. It's on me, yours,
- 20:02Trulie Johnny Dodller. Our star will return in just a moment. Now here
- 20:19is our star to tell you about next week's story. Next week a trip
- 20:23to a mining town out near Denver, Colorado. And for me, it's
- 20:26a little too close to the wild, wild West. Join us, won't
- 20:30you? Yours? Trulie, Johnny Dollar, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, starring
- 20:41Bod Bailey, originates in Hollywood and is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone,
- 20:45who also wrote today's story. Heard in our cast Worder Bellus, Vic Perron,
- 20:49Harry Bartel, Jack Pushan, Lou Merrill, and Stacey Harris. Be
- 20:53sure to join us next week, say in time and Station or another exciting
- 20:57story of yours true Le Johnny Dollars, This is Dan Gubberly speaking. This
- 21:18is the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. This is Andrew J.
- 22:10Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and a Man of His
- 22:14Wife. You're listening to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. Wow,
- 22:25what a fun episode. A couple of observations. First of all, we
- 22:29have Johnny broadcasting the details of the Parley Baron matter after clearance from the FBI.
- 22:37I'm not certain I would buy them clearing it. And actually, if
- 22:41I were Parley Baron, I'd be less concerned about the Soviets finding out what
- 22:45I was doing as I would be my wife thought finding out, given that
- 22:51he basically ran off without noticing that particular case. And it's an interesting idea
- 22:57that the Johnny Doller radio show is so popular that even the KJB is out
- 23:03there listening to it so they can hone up on what's going on. And
- 23:08it makes me wonder, was there a Russian version to counteract Johnny Dollar is
- 23:15Russwie. Welcome to Sege Ruble Adventures of the Eastern Blocks, Low rent Insurance
- 23:22investigator and now you know why don't make my living doing Eastern Block accents.
- 23:29But it's a wonderful thing. I just actually over a great detactives dot net.
- 23:33I'll mention this at the beginning of Saturday show. I'm doing a review
- 23:37of the Ellery Queen Show. And they had a character named Simon Brenner who
- 23:44was a criminologist who had a show where he salved fictional crimes and actually tried
- 23:51to take a hand at solving real crimes in the fictional universe of Ellery Queen.
- 23:56And you have to wonder whether that's sort of blend of reality was inspired
- 24:03at all a sort of stuff that happened on Johnny Doller. Also, we
- 24:07had them breaking out the Tommy guns. I don't think we've heard one of
- 24:11those on Johnny Dollar since the Edmon O'Brien era, and one the way,
- 24:15I guess it was a bit of a relief though, to find that Leon
- 24:19had died before him, because if they'd found out he'd been in the back
- 24:25of the car or hidden somewhere and they'd fired the Tommy gun into him.
- 24:30That would not be a good thing at all. Now, the actual real
- 24:37lifetiming of this episode, if you'll forgive the expression, this episode originally aired
- 24:45on March the sixteenth of nineteen fifty eight, and the FBI guy said just
- 24:52keep it off the show until after the Explorer launches. Explo one, the
- 25:00very first United States satellite, launched on February the first of nineteen fifty eight,
- 25:08and it was the first in a long line of the Explorer programs.
- 25:15This is really one of those things where you just get such a trait from
- 25:19the radio program. Well. I love many of the great modern radio programs
- 25:26that are being done. There's something about hearing a Johnny Dollar cold war thriller
- 25:33that throws in a bit of space race nostalgia. And I hope you enjoyed
- 25:37it as much as I did. All right, Well, join us tomorrow
