Latest / Daebak K-Rambles Podcast: K-drama Reviews / AMA: Answering Listener Questions / Ep. 61
Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica, and this is Teba Kay Rambles for a couple of
- 0:21friends review Korean dramas and hello, welcome back.
- 0:26This is technically the first episode of season 5, the first
- 0:29episode of 2024, and it's actually something totally
- 0:34different. I thought I'd kick off the
- 0:35season by finally doing that AMA that I promised I do at the end
- 0:39of 2023. So this episode is a solo pod.
- 0:44It's a mailbag episode. There was no guest.
- 0:47It's just me. And I'll be answering all of
- 0:49your burning questions that you've submitted via the socials
- 0:53at Tibac Pod. Now, I did want to intro this by
- 0:57saying that I I so appreciate interacting with all of you.
- 1:01I love hearing from you guys. I love getting DMS, even voice
- 1:06messages from you guys. Fun fact, if you send me a voice
- 1:09message on Insta, I'll more than likely send a voice message
- 1:12back. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you
- 1:16for supporting the podcast, for supporting me on this journey.
- 1:20It's been so gratifying to build a community around Tabak, like
- 1:26around our love for dramas. And I know that sometimes it's
- 1:30really easy to forget that there's a, there's a real person
- 1:33behind all the drama content. So this episode is to sort of
- 1:37bridge the gap. It's it's kind of a
- 1:39reintroduction as much as it's for fans of the podcast.
- 1:43So without further ado, I'm just going to get right into it.
- 1:46I was initially going to say exactly who asked the question,
- 1:49but then I was like, I think I would just get tongue tied
- 1:53reading out everyone. Everyone's instant handles and
- 1:57Twitter handles and whatever else.
- 1:58So I'm just going to say oh, this next question, whatever.
- 2:03So you know who you are when you asked it.
- 2:06So thank you for asking your questions.
- 2:08I really appreciate it. So the first three questions,
- 2:13they all kind of have to do with the same thing.
- 2:14So they are all intro to me questions.
- 2:17How did you get into K dramas? When and how did you start
- 2:20watching Asian dramas? Did you start with Korean
- 2:24dramas? So all these go hand in hand, so
- 2:27I'm just going to answer all of these three at the same time.
- 2:30This story starts in 2011 or 2012.
- 2:36I sort of use these years interchangeably just because I
- 2:40have like a shit memory. I I never sat down and said
- 2:45today I've watched my first gay drama in my diary like it never
- 2:48happened. So that's why I just say like,
- 2:50oh 20/12/20 11:00-ish. I had just graduated from
- 2:54college and I was living back home and I had just started my
- 2:59first full time job. I had suddenly all of this free
- 3:03time. I had nothing like no test to
- 3:06study for, no papers to write, no classes.
- 3:09So I would just come home from work and be like, what?
- 3:14What now? So also, I guess I should say,
- 3:19like, in college I really broadened what I watched my
- 3:23taste. I went to a small liberal arts
- 3:26college and I took out like all kinds of classes and had friends
- 3:30from all over with varied interests.
- 3:32And I remember I had a friend who studied Mandarin.
- 3:35My roommate was a theater major, like another friend was a huge
- 3:39horror fan and made us all go to Halloween Horror Nights, which
- 3:42is a whole debacle in and of itself.
- 3:44Another friend was she was really sweet and would crochet
- 3:49during our movie nights. And I still have a beanie that
- 3:52she made me. And I think like any other young
- 3:55person I was trying new things. I was very open and willing to
- 3:58try different experiences whether it was food, movies, TV
- 4:02shows, music, etcetera. So the I remember, let me just
- 4:07set the scene though, because despite me being open to
- 4:11watching new things, the TV shows that I remember watching
- 4:15around this time or like Glee, I remember vividly watching the
- 4:20pilot episode of Glee in my freshman dorm room.
- 4:24So yeah, there was that ABC Family show Once Upon a time.
- 4:31I remember watching season one and a little bit of season 2.
- 4:34I remember watching Lost with My Family just as the last season
- 4:38of that was airing. I remember watching Walking
- 4:41Dead, which that premiered in 2010, I think, and Oh my God, I
- 4:48was fully in love with Tom Welling from Smallville.
- 4:52I watched a smattering of CW shows as well, like Greek.
- 4:57But I can't, like, I personally can't say that I was truly
- 5:00married to Western television. Like, I wasn't like watching TV
- 5:05all the time. I was always just like a movie
- 5:07person. So the same summer that I
- 5:09started watching K dramas, like, this is the chain of events.
- 5:12I started by binging. This is going to sound so
- 5:16stupid, but I started by binging True Blood, that raunchy, racy
- 5:21vampire show on HBO. So yeah, and it wasn't, I didn't
- 5:24even have HBO. Like, we didn't have HBO.
- 5:26It was on this, like, illegal site that I was streaming it on.
- 5:31It was crazy. So I I think of that time as
- 5:35sort of a fever dream. And then I watched a French
- 5:38movie on Netflix, and then the BBC Robin Hood show, also on
- 5:44Netflix, before Netflix figured out that I was watching stuff
- 5:49from all over, like global stuff.
- 5:51And it suggested that I watched the movie A Moment to Remember,
- 5:56which is a 2004 melodrama obviously from Korea starring
- 6:01Sonia Jin and Jungle Sung. Yeah, so it was strange and just
- 6:09ridiculous. Ridiculously sad.
- 6:11I loved it. Back then, you could rate movies
- 6:14and shows out of five stars on Netflix, which gave you really
- 6:17good suggestions from their algorithm.
- 6:19Now it's just up for thumbs up or thumbs down if you like it.
- 6:22But back then I was like 5 stars.
- 6:23So after that, after I rated that movie high on Netflix, that
- 6:28changed my life 'cause then Netflix started suggesting K
- 6:31dramas and it suggested that I watch Lie To Me, which is a 2011
- 6:37K drama starring Yunnan, Yunnan Hai and Kong Diwan.
- 6:43I freaking loved it. Like as soon after that I
- 6:48watched Boys Over Flowers, which is addictive and trophy and
- 6:52toxic. And I mean that was it.
- 6:54Like the rest is history and that's it.
- 6:56That's a full back story of how I got into K dramas, which is
- 7:00over over a decade ago. So yeah, next question.
- 7:04How many have you watched so far?
- 7:07Do you have your own personal list?
- 7:09How do you rate? OK, so I looked at my drama list
- 7:15and I've watched 7 Taiwanese dramas, 215 Korean dramas, 41
- 7:22Chinese dramas and eight Japanese dramas for a total.
- 7:27As of today of 271 Asian dramas total.
- 7:32I have also dropped because I think this is important, 7
- 7:38Taiwanese dramas, 42 Korean dramas and 10 Chinese dramas.
- 7:43I thought that number would be more but I guess not because
- 7:45over time I just get more picky with what I watch.
- 7:49So do I have my own personal list?
- 7:52Yes. I just use my drama list.
- 7:54I used to keep a tiny notebook that I got for free from
- 7:59somewhere, and I would write down the dramas that I had
- 8:04watched, like the names of them. And I wish before I had switched
- 8:09to my drama list, I had kept this going for a while, for a
- 8:12few years. And then for some God awful
- 8:15reason, I threw it out. Why the hell I threw it out, I
- 8:18have no idea. I think I moved and I was like,
- 8:21I don't need this anymore, like, whatever.
- 8:24And I threw it out. I'm so mad.
- 8:26I did because I want to see in my own handwriting, like all the
- 8:30all the dramas. Because by the time I switched
- 8:33to my drama list, I was just going off memory.
- 8:35Like when I filled out my drama list on this one epic day, I was
- 8:39literally going year by year trying to figure out what I had
- 8:42watched from memory. So I'm I'm sure that it's skewed
- 8:45like this is probably different. What I'm saying is it could be
- 8:49different. My My Drama list is as accurate
- 8:52as I could make it based on my memory, but I had a running
- 8:55tally of everything. What I used to do with that
- 8:57handwritten thing was I would write it down If I highlighted
- 9:01it in blue, I really liked it. And if I put a star next to it,
- 9:06I freaking loved it. That was my old rating.
- 9:09So now I read it on the podcast. I read it out of five Soldier
- 9:14bottles. I like to keep it 5 Soldier
- 9:17bottles because I've been using Letterboxed for years, which is
- 9:20a different app, and that's how I log all of the movies that
- 9:24I've watched in my entire life. And that is very accurate.
- 9:28That one I went through again, like there was a several days
- 9:31that I went through every single year of release in letterbox and
- 9:37logged every single movie that I had watched and rated it.
- 9:41And now I keep it on going, like even rewatches.
- 9:44I'll say like I rewatched this on the 11th of December.
- 9:47So Letterbox is extremely accurate, I think more accurate
- 9:50than my My Drama List account, as a matter of fact.
- 9:54So I log movies separate, then, then dramas, and because
- 9:58letterbox is out of five stars and you can do half stars.
- 10:01That's kind of why I thought 05 Soldier bottles and you can do
- 10:05half bottles on the Baci rambles, if that makes any
- 10:08sense. Like how do I rate the drama?
- 10:13I think a lot of it has to do with how it made me feel.
- 10:16How how I thought the plot went, how the writing was vibes, how
- 10:22the acting was, if everything was well cast, the production
- 10:25value, although I I'm very forgiving with production value
- 10:28to be quite honest with you. And then I think I also do
- 10:35rewatch ability in the back of my mind.
- 10:37I'm also like would I recommend this and what I rewatch this.
- 10:40If the answers are both no, then it my rating kind of dips.
- 10:44So that's in a nutshell how I rate things.
- 10:48Next question, how did you start podcasting?
- 10:52So I've been a podcaster since actually 2018, just not for K
- 10:59dramas. So I'm sure many of you know I I
- 11:04said this before, I love movies and I Co host the movie podcast.
- 11:07Always the critic with my good friend Rico.
- 11:09Rico's been on the podcast several, several times.
- 11:12He was my exclusive Co host on season one.
- 11:14That's when I got the most bang for my buck.
- 11:16And now I was like, you have to do this season with me, please.
- 11:20How did this all happen? Well, I'll tell you the story of
- 11:24always a critic. So back in 2018, there was this
- 11:28movie subscription service called MoviePass.
- 11:31You paid $10 a month, and it allowed you to see as many
- 11:35movies as you possibly could in theatres.
- 11:38And so Rico and I had some friends and and some of our
- 11:41friends had this had this MoviePass thing.
- 11:43We were seeing movies like you would not believe.
- 11:47We would just show. It was it was like Wednesday
- 11:49night. We'd show up Thursday, we'd show
- 11:51up Friday. It was non-stop.
- 11:53We were seeing movies. It was ridiculous.
- 11:55And Rico started his own podcast called the I Have A Movie Pass
- 12:00Podcast. And he did a couple of episodes
- 12:05reviewing movies on his own solo pod.
- 12:07And then he invited, you know, his brother Miguel, who's been
- 12:11on Tebac a few times as well. I'm sure you've heard Miguel, he
- 12:15was on the Glory episode. He was on 25/21.
- 12:18He was on the J drama first Love episode with me as well.
- 12:21He's such a great drama friend, one of my first drama friends
- 12:24ever. So Miguel and Rico are brothers,
- 12:28if that makes any sense. So for I have a movie past
- 12:32podcast. Miguel was one of the first
- 12:33guests and then they have a sister.
- 12:36So it's super Rico and Miguel's sister guested.
- 12:39And then Rico of course started tapping our friends group to
- 12:41guest on movie reviews with him and I guested on the Deadpool 2
- 12:46review. It was so much fun.
- 12:48It felt like an extension of conversations that we were
- 12:51already having, you know, just very natural.
- 12:55So Rico asked me back the next few reviews until finally he
- 12:59like just stopped asking and I and I that was it.
- 13:02I was his Co host and when MoviePass crashed and burned,
- 13:06because that was just not a sustainable business strategy,
- 13:10we renamed the Movie podcast to always the critics.
- 13:13So now how does Tabak fit in? So I started the Tabak blog in
- 13:192017 directly as a result of how bad The Bride of Habek was.
- 13:25That is a show starring Nam Tu Hiuk and I needed a place to
- 13:30vent. And I thought, why not just
- 13:33write down my thoughts and set up a blog just as sort of like a
- 13:38review diary, and if someone reads it then great, if not,
- 13:42this is for me. So the blog was started in 2017
- 13:45and I called it Tebaki rambles, like TV Reviews or something,
- 13:50something like that. But it was always Tebaki
- 13:52rambles. So come early 2021, I decided to
- 13:58look at the blog numbers for once.
- 14:00And I was kind of shocked at how many people came to the site to
- 14:04read the Tibaki Rambles blog. So I went to Rico and said,
- 14:08like, look, there's a market for the like, think of it like, I I
- 14:12don't remember, I don't remember the show.
- 14:14I think it might be Arrested Development, that meme where
- 14:17it's just like a conspiracy wall and the guys like like looking
- 14:23crazy and is trying to tell you know whoever about, you know
- 14:29what the findings like what was going on.
- 14:31And this is how I came to Rico. I was like, look there's a
- 14:35market for this. People really want to really
- 14:36want to hear about the key dramas.
- 14:38Like maybe we could try doing one season of a Tebow K Rambles
- 14:41podcast. Like, what do you say?
- 14:43And I swear I I must have looked like a crazy person.
- 14:46So that's how it happened. Like even though it's not his
- 14:49thing, Rico said. Sure.
- 14:51And I went nuts creating a logo, setting up the socials,
- 14:57designing posts, and just getting immersed in the K drama
- 15:01community, which I I just had never been a part of in any real
- 15:06capacity up until that point. So quickly.
- 15:10Quickly, I found that I loved it.
- 15:12I love talking to people about what many would consider like a
- 15:16guilty pleasure, something so odd.
- 15:19That is, watching television shows, not from your culture, in
- 15:24a different language, reading subtitles.
- 15:27And the podcast and the social aspect of it has been a really
- 15:32fulfilling part for me, You know, it's just been really
- 15:37fulfilling for me. So thanks again.
- 15:40And next question, Where are you from exactly?
- 15:42And how old are you? So I was born and raised in
- 15:46South Florida and most people don't recognize the names of the
- 15:51towns. So I often just say I'm from
- 15:53Miami. The place I'm from is halfway
- 15:55between Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
- 15:57I have since moved away so I lived in.
- 15:59I now live in Central Florida in a magical city known for theme
- 16:03parks and bad traffic. Orlando, The legit only thing I
- 16:07miss about Miami is the food because you cannot get good
- 16:11food. Well, good authentic Cuban food.
- 16:14That is the only thing that you really can't get outside of
- 16:17Miami. Slash South Florida.
- 16:19That's a fact. I will not be taking questions
- 16:21on that. If the question meant what is
- 16:25your ethnicity then I'm half Cuban and half Puerto Rican.
- 16:31And then because I said when I graduated, you could probably do
- 16:34the math, but I'm. I'm 32.
- 16:37I forget that. I'm 32 all the time.
- 16:39I feel like I'm still in my 20s mentally.
- 16:41And it's really jarring that like, I pay taxes and have a
- 16:44mortgage. So there's that next question.
- 16:48How do you think the K drama scene of this year 2023?
- 16:54Do you think of any reasons that make a certain year more
- 16:57exciting than others? I've been watching the old K
- 17:00dramas for this year, so this is a great question.
- 17:04It's a little weird to be answering this question two
- 17:07months into 2024, but that's because I decided to say this
- 17:10AMA late for later instead of releasing it at the end of 2023.
- 17:14So that's on me, not on this person.
- 17:18I actually guested on 2 vastly different podcast episodes
- 17:21wrapping up the year 2023 in Asian drama.
- 17:24So if you want to check those out, by all means I highly
- 17:26recommend it. I was on TN Soulju podcast with
- 17:30the drama trio for an end of the year wrap up episode and then I
- 17:34was also on Carol's K Drama Amusing's podcast.
- 17:38I think it was like 2023, the year in dramas.
- 17:41That's what that episode was called.
- 17:42So here's a in a nutshell, I don't I personally don't
- 17:47consider 2023 a good drama year for me, I there were around like
- 17:51114 K dramas released in 2023. It's always around that number,
- 17:57sometimes more, sometimes a little less.
- 17:59I personally completed just 121212.
- 18:05I dropped 2 dramas and right now I'm only mildly interested in
- 18:10starting like 13 dramas from 2023.
- 18:15When that will happen, anyone's guess.
- 18:19I don't know. I think the quality of dramas
- 18:22went down. I think the consistency that
- 18:26drew me into dramas is nowhere to be found.
- 18:29Instead of like 16 or 20 episodes, we're getting dramas
- 18:32with all kinds of runtimes. You know, 5055 hour, hour, 10
- 18:38minutes, hour and a half. All kinds of episode counts. 12
- 18:42episodes is becoming increasingly common.
- 18:45So is having multiple seasons, which I think is a direct result
- 18:50of Netflix intervention and money.
- 18:52To me, the trope that was overplayed in 2023 was past life
- 18:58slash time travel. It was too much, too much, and
- 19:01honestly, the trope wouldn't bother me so much if the quality
- 19:05wasn't an issue. I feel like other than a few
- 19:09shows, the rest are so forgettable, So forgettable.
- 19:14Like overall, other than a handful of shows, the biggest,
- 19:20like the bulk of 2023 shows are so forgettable.
- 19:23And that's a problem. You asked any reasons that make
- 19:27a certain year more exciting than others, and I think it has
- 19:29to do with how memorable shows are.
- 19:32Even if I don't particularly like a show, I feel like if it
- 19:36had an impact on the collective, on the on the zeitgeist, if
- 19:40people were moved in some way, shape or form and I'm left with
- 19:44like a visceral reaction to it, then I think it counts as being
- 19:48memorable and contributing to the overall excitement for a
- 19:52given year. People, myself included, love to
- 19:58talk about the year 20/20/16 and is because even after all this
- 20:02time, eight years now. That year was like a renaissance
- 20:07for gay dramas, in terms of both quality and how memorable the
- 20:11shows are. And by comparison, in just a
- 20:15couple of months, I'm left with a small list of shows for 2023.
- 20:18I can count them on one hand that May 2023 what it was.
- 20:23It's the glory, moving, and my dearest.
- 20:25The rest will be lost to time. Like you'll bring them up in
- 20:30conversation and Best of Less and go, Oh yeah, that's right.
- 20:34Crash Course and Romance came out that year too.
- 20:37It makes 2023 look embarrassing. It looks unremarkable.
- 20:42So that's my thoughts. That's the that's the end of
- 20:46that question. Next up, what's your watching
- 20:50system? Do you have a life outside Asian
- 20:53drama? So I'm.
- 20:55I'm sorry. I started laughing.
- 20:56Let me read that again. What's your watching system?
- 21:00Do you have a life outside Asian dramas?
- 21:03My watching system is really simple.
- 21:06I'm usually a bit of a mood watcher.
- 21:09Uh, an impulse watcher. I see things on different
- 21:12platforms and read the synopsis, look at the cast, check a
- 21:17trailer if there is one, and make a decision on the spot.
- 21:23I rarely succumb to peer pressure, so to speak, or FOMO
- 21:28during the podcast season. My watch system is not so fluid.
- 21:34With a few exceptions, I plan everything out and stick to the
- 21:38shows that I've picked, which is like a combo of what I think
- 21:42people want to hear about shows that seem interesting and have
- 21:48enough stuff to talk about on a podcast and requests from all of
- 21:53you guys. So that I hope that answers that
- 21:56question. Do I have a life outside of
- 21:58Asian dramas? Absolutely.
- 22:00I've said this on other podcasts, I am not constantly
- 22:03watching Asian dramas. I love them.
- 22:06I do. But sometimes I get burnt out or
- 22:10I watch a few duds in a row and I get kind of turned off by them
- 22:14or just life happens. So I go through seasons of
- 22:17watching a ton of dramas and seasons of watching next to no
- 22:22dramas at all. And it's been years of this on
- 22:25and off of just like, I'd rather watch movies.
- 22:28I'd rather like, read a book. I'd rather, you know, things
- 22:32happen and I just don't have the time or what have you.
- 22:36And it just like trickles in where I'm watching a drama and
- 22:40then sometimes it's like a flood or waterfall and I'm like
- 22:42watching tons of dramas. So it just depends.
- 22:45And that's why I guess my watch, like my totals that I said at
- 22:50the beginning are not so inflated.
- 22:52Like it's not thousands of dramas, you know what I'm
- 22:55saying? So to follow that up, I do work
- 22:59full time. I am.
- 23:01I've had this conversation with people in my DMS.
- 23:03Like people think I'm a full time content creator.
- 23:05I am not a full time content creator.
- 23:10It's kind of flattering to think that the amount, maybe quality
- 23:13of content that I produce would make you think that this is all
- 23:16I do, but absolutely not. Because I host, always a critic,
- 23:22I just got in the habit of watching most new theatrical
- 23:25releases. So most weekends I'm at the
- 23:27movies. I watch movies at home
- 23:30throughout the week. I hang out with friends.
- 23:32I go thrifting. I love working on home projects.
- 23:34If the mood strikes, I visit my parents.
- 23:36I'm really close with my family and that is all like built into
- 23:40my life along with watching dramas.
- 23:44So yeah, work full time, regular person, go out to eat, it's it's
- 23:50all all there. So next question, what are some
- 23:55of your K drama pet peeves? My example female lead who wears
- 24:01her hair down all the time? Yeah, that would bother me too.
- 24:04So some of my K drama pet peeves are different, like some are
- 24:11tropes and some are not. So the biggest one is the Met as
- 24:14children trope. I just dislike it so much.
- 24:18I think it's so lazy and it's such a Korean thing too that
- 24:22this faded mates thing that they met when they were children and
- 24:26they had some sort of connection and inyon or whatever and
- 24:29they're going to like circle back on it later.
- 24:31And it's like most dramas. It is so rare that they do this
- 24:38well where I'm like, oh wow, yeah, like it was so needed.
- 24:42But usually I'm like they had such a strong connection even
- 24:47before we found out that they met his children and they could
- 24:50have just stuck with that. So I'm.
- 24:52I'm almost never in favor of it. I think it's just so overdone,
- 24:57disapproving and overbearing parents.
- 25:00This is another part where I again, I'm Hispanic.
- 25:04I can't. I understand to some extent like
- 25:08disapproving and overbearing parents, but like to to it.
- 25:12It gets to a point where I'm like, Oh my God, enough sudden
- 25:16illness slash amnesia. This is one that's going like by
- 25:21the wayside. You don't see this that often
- 25:23anymore, but what you do see is a surprise car crash.
- 25:27This hasn't gone anywhere. I still dislike getting run over
- 25:31by the White Truck of Doom. I think it's a joke at this
- 25:34point. I find I find it a joke.
- 25:36It's never in earnest that I'm like wow, he they got.
- 25:41They got run over by a white truck.
- 25:44Like it is never serious to me. I think it's a joke at this
- 25:49point. The main couple break up in one
- 25:54of the final episodes due to some like contrived reason.
- 25:58I hate the reasons to like. It'll be like cliche, like if
- 26:01you love someone let them go or they're better off without me.
- 26:04Or even like an ex lover coming back into the picture like get a
- 26:09hold of yourself. I I think it's really cheap so I
- 26:15I hate that as well. Pet whenever it happens.
- 26:18I'm like nails on a chalkboard. Ugly duckling is another.
- 26:24Like, I because I love makeovers, but I don't like that
- 26:28we're all tiptoeing around the fact that this isn't a stunning
- 26:32person in in glasses. Like are you joking?
- 26:36Like that the ugly duckling thing never works.
- 26:38So I I don't. I I just don't think it works.
- 26:42I think. I think they think we're stupid.
- 26:43So yeah, it's just never done right Back Pats like when they
- 26:49pat someone on the back to to comfort them.
- 26:52That to me is I like not very comforting in in my culture,
- 26:59that's not necessarily very comforting.
- 27:02Like just give them a really strong bear hug, you know what
- 27:05I'm saying? Hold them until they need, you
- 27:08know, like that's it. Not like a little backpack.
- 27:14It seems like they're a dog. Like it makes me think, oh, but
- 27:16it's that's what I do to a dog like you pat a dog not a person.
- 27:20So backpacks, it's, it might be a cultural thing, but to this
- 27:23day I'm like, Nope. And then it depends.
- 27:28But almost always this product placement gets me in a frenzy.
- 27:33And it's Subway product placement, because it's fucking
- 27:38Subway. Are you are you out of your
- 27:40mind? So those are some of my K drama
- 27:43pet peeves. There are probably many more.
- 27:46But those are just some that I came up with on the spot when I
- 27:49was answering this question. Next up, your top.
- 27:53So this person gave me some serious ass homework and I'm
- 27:56really upset with them and I know who they are, but I won't
- 27:59name them your top ten dramas, K dramas, C dramas, talgooks,
- 28:05anything slash everything and a little happy face emoji.
- 28:10That is not very nice to do to me because I don't like giving.
- 28:13I don't like ranking dramas like this, pitting them against each
- 28:17other, especially like between crossing genres and stuff like
- 28:22what? This was very difficult.
- 28:24This was so difficult for me, but I did it for you.
- 28:28This ended up being a very personalized list and I ended up
- 28:34not ranking them. I just put 10 together and I was
- 28:37like, these are 10, not not in any particular order.
- 28:42OK, so here's my top 10K dramas on this particular day and it's
- 28:49specific to me. This is not like an object
- 28:53trying to be objective. This is completely subjective.
- 28:56OK, don't come from me. I don't really want to argue
- 29:02about these. OK, here they are. 2521 Goblin,
- 29:10The Red Sleeve, Happiness, Splash Splash Love, which is
- 29:15like a mini K drama. I think it's only two episodes.
- 29:18Move to heaven. The Princesses Man.
- 29:22Our beloved summer coffee prints 9 and two outs which is a a
- 29:28older drama. It's a friends to lovers it's
- 29:30one of the best All right. I had I just have have some
- 29:35runner UPS so I'll name them Just you know to be well-rounded
- 29:39here but that those are my top ten.
- 29:42I made cuts. These are the cuts.
- 29:44The glory. My dearest moving healer, the
- 29:47crowned clown cruel city which is a noir tomorrow with you
- 29:52because this is my first life. And Cain and Abel.
- 29:55All right. Top ten C dramas.
- 29:57This is a lot easier to pull together.
- 30:00So we have love like the Galaxy till the end of the moon.
- 30:05Eternal love AKA 10 miles of Peach blossoms.
- 30:09Love between fairy and devil and I got to be honest, these these
- 30:13are my top four and they're in order.
- 30:15The rest, I cannot put them in order.
- 30:19Reset story of Kunning Palace. Hidden love, The starry love who
- 30:25rules the world, The romance of Tiger and Rose.
- 30:28Goodbye my Princess and unrequited love if you counted
- 30:31correctly. I added two more bonus in there.
- 30:34So there's actually 12 on this top ten.
- 30:38All right, Top 10s. Hagooks we have.
- 30:41And this. The top five are actually
- 30:43ranked, so you're welcome. My dearest Mr. Sunshine, the red
- 30:50Sleeve, the princess's Man and the crowned clown.
- 30:54Here's the rest, and I'll give you 2 extra ones as well.
- 30:58So it'll be 12 shows. 100 days. My Prince.
- 31:02Kingdom Love in the Moonlight Moon.
- 31:05Embracing the Sun. Rookie historian Guhe Yong.
- 31:08Ruler. The Master of the Mask and the
- 31:11Forbidden Marriage. So those are some really good
- 31:13saguks if you want some. And don't ask me to do that
- 31:17again. OK, next question.
- 31:19What's the longest binge session you've ever had?
- 31:22Hashtag team? No Sleep.
- 31:26I'm pretty bad at noting down when I binge and for how long,
- 31:30but I'm honestly not that bad. I I don't do well when I don't
- 31:35get sleep. So there's stories of me going
- 31:37on family vacations and having to get on flights at like 6:00
- 31:42AM and doing full days. Like right when we land we do a
- 31:45full day at our destination and just losing my mind.
- 31:50So I have a history. I like my sleep, worst bin set.
- 31:55Binge sesh has to be like 1/2 a day or something like definitely
- 31:59less than 24 hours. When I lived alone, there were
- 32:04quite a few weekends where I would just shut away and did
- 32:06like a Friday night into Saturday.
- 32:08So maybe maybe 7:00 PM Friday to like 6:00 or 7:00 AM Saturday
- 32:16morning. Then I'd finally go to sleep,
- 32:19would be out of Commission until later on that day.
- 32:24Like get up, I don't know, pick up sushi and then come back home
- 32:27to watch some more. But I would never do
- 32:29back-to-back giant binge sessions like that on a
- 32:32consistent basis, like this is normal.
- 32:35On a consistent basis like Monday through Friday, I can
- 32:38realistic realistically do 7:00 PM to midnight or or a little
- 32:45later, so that's five hours straight.
- 32:48But as I've said, I'm trying to get to bed at a reasonable time
- 32:53now and set better habits for myself.
- 32:56So going to bed at 123 AM is like becoming a thing of the
- 33:02past. It's just I'm doing that way
- 33:03less almost never now. So great question, Another three
- 33:12best underrated dramas is the next question.
- 33:17Three best underrated dramas. I don't, I can't.
- 33:22So I gave you, I did 1212 underrated dramas.
- 33:26Here they are and they're all from all genres.
- 33:31The Crowned clown Signal for Supernatural Slash, Crime
- 33:35Thriller, Cruel city for a a crime noir.
- 33:39Do you like Brahms? It's a romance because this is
- 33:42my first life. Also a slice of life slash
- 33:45romance. I'm not a robot.
- 33:47It's OK That's love. King Two Hearts, Love All Play,
- 33:53Temperature of Love, The Forbidden Marriage and Tomorrow
- 33:57With You. So you asked for three.
- 34:00I gave you 12 because that's like torturing me to only do
- 34:04three. Any dramas.
- 34:06Oh, this is the next question. Any dramas you wish.
- 34:09Another actor slash actress played the lead role instead.
- 34:14OK, at first nothing came to mind here, but then I just
- 34:19thought of every child, no drama and every song Kong drama.
- 34:23I think at this point there's got to be some hot ass ace actor
- 34:28who can actually act who's just actually act.
- 34:32Just he. This person has to be fed up
- 34:35with trying to go for these same parts that are likely just being
- 34:38given to these two actors. I I feel terrible for this
- 34:42hypothetical person I know is out there for actresses.
- 34:48Maybe I'll throw a moon kayung out there from true beauty.
- 34:51Of course, BAE Susie, I'll throw her into the proverbial bus as
- 34:55well, so I do not want to stick around to catch some bullets on
- 35:00this. So next question, a trope you
- 35:02love in dramas when done right and some dramas that did it.
- 35:07Well, this was really difficult, 'cause I couldn't, I didn't have
- 35:13an easy time picking the trope that I loved because I feel like
- 35:17as long as it's written right, I it it's written right, like it's
- 35:21it's it'll work. So the tropes that I picked were
- 35:26nuna romance, sudden amnesia and rich man, poor woman.
- 35:30So here's some good Nuna romances.
- 35:36You know, it was done right and I liked it.
- 35:38So when the Camellia blooms Don't Hate Me, Something in the
- 35:43Rain, Temperature of Love and Reply 1988.
- 35:47Reply 1988 is an ensemble cast with lots of different stories.
- 35:52It is extremely long. Each episode's like an hour and
- 35:55a half, two hours or something. So there is only one storyline
- 35:59that has the Nuna romance for something in the rain.
- 36:01Beware of that last half of the show.
- 36:03It's a doozy. But that nuna romance is
- 36:06extremely special and magical. So I think when you just zero in
- 36:12on the Nuna romances, all these shows do really well.
- 36:15Sudden Amnesia. I have Cain and Abel, 100 Days,
- 36:21My Prince, The Moon that Embraces the Sun, Autumns,
- 36:24Concerto, which is a Taiwanese drama, and The Innocent Man with
- 36:29Hong Jun Ki as well, which is a bit of an older drama, but I
- 36:33remember really like it, really liking it.
- 36:35It was a Mukchang I believe, but I was like eating it up and then
- 36:40the last trope I picked was rich man, poor woman and these this
- 36:44is like a dime a dozen. Like you could hit throw a rock
- 36:48and you'll hit a rich man, poor woman show in K drama.
- 36:51But these ones did it really well.
- 36:53I like them. They're it's not a supposed to
- 36:56be a very serious trope or or a story.
- 37:00So these ones I think are fun coffee prints, Secret Garden
- 37:05Cinderella and the four nights Bride of the Century business
- 37:09proposal. I'm not a robot goblin and so I
- 37:13married an anti fan. All right, next question, can
- 37:17you do a list of recommended C drama only on Netflix or Vicki?
- 37:23OK, recommended C drama. So Chinese dramas only on
- 37:26Netflix or Vicki. I can, but just just FYI like
- 37:32this is the biggest caveat. I am in the state.
- 37:36I'm located in the United States.
- 37:37So if you are outside of the states, in Canada or wherever
- 37:42else, you might have different stuff available on your Netflix
- 37:46or Vicki because of licensing or whatever else like that.
- 37:52Just might is always the case. Things that are available here
- 37:55might not be available where you are.
- 37:57Plus things change all the time on Netflix and Vicki.
- 38:02Licensing deals expire and things get taken off Netflix and
- 38:06Vicki all the time. So just beware of like this is
- 38:10as of today in the United States in February of 2024.
- 38:15This is what is available on Netflix and Vicki for me.
- 38:20And the next caveat that I want to state is I have not watched
- 38:24every single see drama. I, and I've said this before on
- 38:29other podcasts, but like, I tend to ration my sea dramas because
- 38:33I have so many that I want to watch that are interesting to
- 38:36me. That it's almost like when I
- 38:39have nothing else to watch, I'm like, Oh my God, I can dip into
- 38:42this sea drama well and watch something that I've been wanting
- 38:45to watch that I know that people have been recommending to me
- 38:48that people are passionate about.
- 38:50And like, I almost know that I'm going to enjoy, so there.
- 38:57It's almost exponential how many see dramas I have not watched
- 39:02and have on my watch list. So please, like bear with me.
- 39:05I have separated this list into like things that I've watched
- 39:10and things that I haven't watched but are I would feel
- 39:13comfortable recommending because I also like, have had this
- 39:17recommended to me and am planning on watching it at some
- 39:19point. So here we go on Netflix.
- 39:24These are modern sea dramas. Like present day sea dramas are
- 39:27not historicals. Hidden love I Hear You with with
- 39:32Zhao Lushi. I thought it was cute.
- 39:34Not bad. Meteor Garden obviously a remake
- 39:37with Dylan Wong unrequited love from 2019.
- 39:44Hear me on this. Don't watch the later one.
- 39:47Watch the unrequited love that aired in 2019.
- 39:52And then I also have Autumn's Concerto, which is a Taiwanese
- 39:56drama. And I hear me on this y'all are
- 39:59going to watch Want to watch Autumn's Concerto?
- 40:01Because it's coming up soon on season five.
- 40:04And then for costume dramas or historicals, I have Princess Wei
- 40:08Young, which we just did a podcast review on the drama trio
- 40:12over on Tian Soju. That was a lot of fun love
- 40:16between Fairy and Devil, which is also available on Vicky, Who
- 40:20Rules the World. Word of honor, which is ABL that
- 40:25people love to recommend to me. Eternal Love, which is also
- 40:29available on Vicki, and The Untamed, which is also available
- 40:34on Vicki. It's ABL and we covered it in
- 40:35season four of Tibac. I will go out on a limb and
- 40:39recommend it because people love to recommend The Untamed.
- 40:43I'm not going to stop you from having a good time if you want
- 40:45to get in on it, but I personally did not like The
- 40:49Untamed. All right, Vicki.
- 40:52See dramas. These are the ones that I have
- 40:56watched personally. Have watched Reset Till OK for
- 41:02Reset. It's 15 episodes.
- 41:05It's Groundhog Day meets Speed. We just did an episode on it on
- 41:09T and soju with the drama trio. Till the End of the Moon covered
- 41:13it in season four of Tivak. I adore it.
- 41:16The romance of Tiger and Rose covered it on the Patreon feed.
- 41:21Love Like the Galaxy also did an episode on it in season 4.
- 41:26The Starry Love guessed it on Tian Soju with Liliana and
- 41:33reviewed that one. Ashes of love, Eternal Love,
- 41:37which I just mentioned prior, AKA Tanos of Peach blossoms.
- 41:41Goodbye My Princess is on Vicki. It'll break your heart.
- 41:45It's an unhappy ending, but I mean, I I freaking loved it.
- 41:50So and then Maid's Revenge for shits and gigs.
- 41:52Maid's Revenge is not a serious show.
- 41:57It's just not. You'll see what I mean when you
- 42:00just even look at it. All right?
- 42:02And then this is the list of shows that I would recommend on
- 42:06Vicki that I have yet to watch. Here we go, the long ballad,
- 42:13because we'll be covering it on Season 5 shortly, you know.
- 42:17You know, in a few episodes or so you'll see it come up on
- 42:20season five, meet yourself again.
- 42:23We'll be covering it on season five.
- 42:26It'll be fun amidst a snowstorm of love with Wulay.
- 42:30I have yet to watch it, but it comes very highly recommended
- 42:33from all my drama. Besties.
- 42:35It is not a historical, it's a modern day drama.
- 42:39More vibes than plot it seems. But if that's your thing, then
- 42:42by all means the love you give me lighter and Princess nothing
- 42:49but you also with Olay. Go ahead, immortal samsara.
- 42:55That is a Shansha, Nirvana and fire and that's it.
- 43:03Those are all of my wrecks. There are so many more sea
- 43:08dramas on these on on Vicki, especially not really that many
- 43:11on Netflix. But holy shit, Vicky is bursting
- 43:16with Chinese dramas. So if at any point you want more
- 43:20recommendations, please reach out.
- 43:23But you know, just that's just the tip of the iceberg.
- 43:26And obviously Vicky's going to have a lot more recommendations
- 43:28as well and playlists and all kinds of things.
- 43:31Next question, Favorite actors? Is this my last question?
- 43:35No, it's not. OK.
- 43:37Favorite actors and actresses that you look forward to in
- 43:41their next projects. OK for male actors, I guess this
- 43:46is. Well, yeah, this is how I
- 43:49interpreted the question to me. Like, these are actors and
- 43:52actresses that you love, you follow closely and you love to
- 43:57see them and you are excited to watch them in their next
- 44:02projects, you know what I'm saying?
- 44:04So that's how he took it to me. For male actors, I chose
- 44:08Treyushik. He's kind of quickly becoming a
- 44:12favorite of mine. I loved him in our beloved
- 44:14Summer. I loved him in The Witch, The
- 44:15Subversion part one, which is a movie.
- 44:17Loved him in Parasite, obviously, which is, you know,
- 44:19best picture. We a June is up and coming and I
- 44:23really liked him in Little Women in Squid Game Eden.
- 44:28I loved him and moved to Heaven Signal tomorrow with you.
- 44:31I personally love him as an actor, but I think my two
- 44:35favorites that I'm kind of like, oh, I should definitely give
- 44:40most of their things a shot, even though I don't like I'll
- 44:46get to this after but the names are Tonghan from DP and
- 44:50Something in the Rain and 1 Spring Night and Connect and
- 44:55Namtu Hook from 2521 Start Up and Weightlifting Ferry just to
- 45:00name a few of his projects. Everybody has flops, OK?
- 45:05Like every actor and actress will have flops and will have
- 45:11questionable things on their filmography.
- 45:14So I'd never expect every project to be perfect.
- 45:20That being said, like I kind of I know when people are good,
- 45:24when actors are good. I kind of like, oh, I pay a
- 45:29little bit more attention to them.
- 45:31And it's not that I'll press play on every single thing.
- 45:34And if I do, if it's bad, I'm not going to continue watching
- 45:38like that. That's out of the question.
- 45:40I will never continue watching a bad show, even if my fave is in
- 45:43it. So just a little about me.
- 45:47Female actors, it's a much shorter list, but actually it's
- 45:53not that short. But I have sung He Kyo.
- 45:56I have Chung Su, Min Kim Gun and IU.
- 46:00I love them. Songhai Kyo.
- 46:03I didn't put the shows, but Songhai Kyo's from Descendants
- 46:06of the Sun and the Glory. Jung So Men is from Alchemy of
- 46:11Soul Season One and because this is my first life, among other
- 46:15things. King Gun, obviously.
- 46:16Goblin Goblin's Bride, Little Women.
- 46:20IU, Moon Lovers Hotel de Luna. What else has IU been in Dream
- 46:29High? And then of course my favorite,
- 46:33like, I do have a favorite female actor.
- 46:36It's Han Yoju. Han Yoju, Han Yoju.
- 46:38I want to be here when I grow up.
- 46:39I think she's so cool. I love her so much and I think
- 46:44she's done such a great job at picking projects.
- 46:47I think she's so choosy and I think she's varied up her resume
- 46:51a lot and I just like I have such a go crush on Hanyonju.
- 46:56So that's my #1. Even I have have more passion
- 47:00for Hanyonju than I do for like any of the other names that I've
- 47:02mentioned. Truly.
- 47:04OK, this might be my last question.
- 47:06Yes, OK, last question that you guys have submitted to me.
- 47:12What are your most anticipated K dramas coming out in 2024?
- 47:20So I don't have that many because I just don't.
- 47:24But the two that I have are Mom's friend's Son starring
- 47:29Chung, Sun Min and Jung Hin, which are the two names that I
- 47:33just mentioned on my faves list. So here's the synopsis of the
- 47:37show. Che Sung Kuyo, which is Jung
- 47:40Hin's character, is the most noteworthy young architect in
- 47:44Korea, and he runs the architecture atelier in What's
- 47:49the Name of It. Not only is he nearly perfect as
- 47:52an architect, but he is also very attractive and has a great
- 47:55personality. Yet, Che Song Yo has experienced
- 47:59moments that he wants to erase from his life.
- 48:02Those moments usually involve BES Sokrio.
- 48:05When they were four years old, their moms became friends.
- 48:08Because of their moms, Che Song Yo and Bec Sokrio spend a lot of
- 48:14time together, like bathing together at a women's bathhouse.
- 48:18Now Che Song Hyo meets Bei Sokrio as adults.
- 48:23While growing up, Bei Sokrio's life was smooth sailing.
- 48:27During her school days, she never missed ranking first
- 48:29academically at her school. She was always passionate and
- 48:32energetic with things she did. After graduating from a
- 48:35university, she got hired by a large company.
- 48:37She works hard as a project manager, but for some reason she
- 48:40quit her job. She has been unemployed since
- 48:42then. She meets Che Song Hyo.
- 48:45So this is like two childhood frenemies like meeting up again
- 48:51and their moms are besties and I'm like, yeah, I'm totally in
- 48:57and I love those two actors. I'm I'm so ready to see Chung
- 49:01Han in ROM com type situation. And he has expressed that he
- 49:07wants to do this type of project.
- 49:08He doesn't want to play a freaking military man anymore.
- 49:11He doesn't want to play a cop anymore.
- 49:13And I'm like, baby, I'm here, I'm in your corner.
- 49:16So I'm really excited for that and the second show that I'm
- 49:20excited for. And I hope it does come out this
- 49:23year because I think it was slated for last year and it
- 49:25never ended up airing. It's called Ask the Stars,
- 49:30starring Emmanuel and the Kung Hyo Jin.
- 49:33So it's also, I think the English title is When the stars
- 49:36Gossip and the synopsis reads set in a space station and on
- 49:42Earth, a romance takes place between Korean OBGYN Kong Ryong,
- 49:47that's Lehmann Ho's character, and Korean American astronaut
- 49:51Eve Kim, that's Kong Hyun's character.
- 49:56Yeah, that sounds so cool. And the visual, like they have a
- 50:00screen still that's floating around and I'm like, bro, give
- 50:04me that fucking sci-fi romance. Give it to me right now.
- 50:10So I'm excited for that. I hope it's good because I I
- 50:13freaking love Kung Fu Jin. And let me know like I, as much
- 50:16as people like to shit on him, like this is not his typical
- 50:19bag. Like he's not typecasting this
- 50:21at all. He's playing an OBG riot.
- 50:24OBG Ryan in space. What am I supposed to do with
- 50:28this? I need to see it.
- 50:29So that's what I'm excited for. So that's it.
- 50:34That's it. Those are all of your questions.
- 50:36I want to thank you guys again for providing all of these
- 50:39wonderful questions and difficult asks and a lot of
- 50:44homework for me. But one last thing, I've asked
- 50:47this of myself so that you guys have a bit of a heads up, but
- 50:50what is up next for season five? Well, I actually built this
- 50:55season a little differently. My personal goal for this year
- 51:00and the vision for season five, is to only watch shows that I
- 51:04personally want to watch. I'd rather not get burnt out
- 51:08covering what's trending or watching shows I'm not truly
- 51:14interested in. So that's exactly what I did.
- 51:17I'm covering shows that are young and old, just as I started
- 51:22doing in season 4. I'm covering shows from a bunch
- 51:27of different countries, like it's K dramas, C dramas.
- 51:31I've got a Taiwanese drama on the DACA.
- 51:33I've even got AJ drama. I'm reviewing shows that I've
- 51:37watched before and also never watched in my life.
- 51:42I'm watching shows that you might have heard of and some
- 51:45that you might not have heard of at all.
- 51:48But all of them are shows that I personally wanted to watch.
- 51:52They've been in my queue on my watch list.
- 51:55They piqued my interest. They were recommended to me
- 51:59forever ago, and some were even requested by you guys, my
- 52:03wonderful K Ramblers. And I hope that you enjoy, I
- 52:07hope that you enjoy the ride, but yeah, that's it.
- 52:11Stay tuned. Stay tuned.
- 52:13It's just getting started. And that's it.
- 52:16That's our show. I'm Jessica, and this has been
- 52:19the Teba Kieran Rules.
