Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk and I'm really looking forward
- 0:18to continuing today. Today we will be in Isaiah
- 0:22chapter 1 and I believe verses 16 through 31, so probably the
- 0:30second-half of the chapter for today.
- 0:33We started looking at Isaiah last episode.
- 0:36This is a prophet during the last about 150 years of the
- 0:42southern Kingdom of Judah during the reign of four or five of the
- 0:47kings of the southern Kingdom of Judah during that split Kingdom
- 0:53time period in Israel and Isaiah listed out beginning last week
- 0:58in verses one through 16. Here's what God says Israel, you
- 1:03have totally abandoned me. It is not through abandoning the
- 1:08like religious traditions and sacrifices and holidays.
- 1:12He says you're keeping all of those, he says, But I don't want
- 1:16them because it's not actually coming from a heart that wants
- 1:19to follow me and love what I love, which is justice and
- 1:26righteousness, goodness. And that's where we left off
- 1:30last time. As I mentioned before, if you're
- 1:33watching the video podcast, I've got my Bible study software
- 1:37pulled up over here. If you like that, if you're one
- 1:41of our video podcast listeners and you like being able to see
- 1:45what I'm looking at, wonderful, let me know.
- 1:48Or if you're like, hey, that's, you know, more off putting to me
- 1:52or whatever. I don't like not just looking at
- 1:55your face, Brian, please let me know and want it to be a help if
- 1:59it is a help to you. So we're beginning now in verse
- 2:04#16 so God has said Israel, I don't want your religious
- 2:10traditions. I want your heart like I want
- 2:13you to actually do what is right, not just what is
- 2:17religious says in verse 16, wash yourselves, cleanse yourselves,
- 2:21remove your evil deeds from my sight.
- 2:25Stop doing evil if you will. God is saying, you know, I can
- 2:31see you, right? Like it's when a little kid
- 2:35thinks just because their parent, just because they can't
- 2:38see their parent, that the parent can't see them.
- 2:41And this is what God is saying. He says, guys, I see what you're
- 2:45doing in your wickedness. I see what's happening in the
- 2:49shadows. I see what's happening, you
- 2:51know, in the high places, in the Groves where the false worship
- 2:54takes place. I see how you were treating
- 2:57other people. Do you know that God knows the
- 2:59way that you talk to your spouse or the way that you parent your
- 3:03children? God sees that and we will be
- 3:06held accountable before God for that.
- 3:09So he says, remove the evil from my sight, stop doing evil.
- 3:14He says learn to do what is good.
- 3:18And then he gives some explanations of for the children
- 3:21of Israel, here's what it looks like to do good.
- 3:24He says first pursue justice and hear the the word justice.
- 3:30It's mispat, it's decisions, judgments and disputes.
- 3:34He says, I want you to learn to make right decisions.
- 3:39He says correct the oppressor, or you could also freeze it, aid
- 3:43the oppressed, that sometimes there are people.
- 3:46I actually went through this verse.
- 3:48I want to say like last July when I was doing the verse of
- 3:53the day, and I will link that in the show notes for this episode.
- 3:58There will be people, whether rich, powerful, politically well
- 4:03connected, that will harm those that do not have recourse.
- 4:10Even as we would read the end of verse #17 there, defend the
- 4:14rights of the fatherless, plead the widow's 'cause that there
- 4:19are those that in this world's estimation, because they don't
- 4:24have money, they don't have physical protection or the
- 4:28protection of a father or a husband, that they can just be
- 4:33run roughshod over. Because really, who's who's
- 4:36going to stop us? And there might be other people
- 4:37that are more quote, UN quote, deserving of this land or this
- 4:43house. And God just says that's
- 4:46abominable. That is a horrible, horrible
- 4:48take on the world, right? Does not make might, does not
- 4:54make right. There we go.
- 4:56I had to rewind that a little bit.
- 4:58And I'll tell you guys, this is not the way that the world wants
- 5:02to operate. Even today, as you look at the
- 5:06nations of the world, they would say whatever I have the physical
- 5:12or military or financial capacity to do, I have the right
- 5:16to do. And so I can do whatever I want.
- 5:18And it is right because I am powerful.
- 5:21God says no, you will answer to me one day.
- 5:24And so I want you to learn to do what's good, pursue justice,
- 5:28correct the oppressor, defend the rights of the fatherless,
- 5:31plead the widow's 'cause he says this is good, as opposed to what
- 5:35you've been doing, which is bad, if you will.
- 5:37They had been learning to do what is evil.
- 5:40They had been pursuing injustice, making choices based
- 5:44on how they could come out on top financially rather than what
- 5:48was good for other people. Instead correcting the oppressor
- 5:53or aiding the oppressed if you will, They were aiding the
- 5:57oppressor and correcting the oppressed.
- 5:59Oh, don't you know that this is way more than you deserve.
- 6:03Instead of defending the rights of the fatherless, there had
- 6:06been a, if you will, they had been taking advantage of the
- 6:11fatherless and instead of pleading the widow's 'cause they
- 6:14had been taking advantage of widows, something Jesus even
- 6:17addressed during his ministry here on earth.
- 6:20So he says, don't be like you have been.
- 6:24Chart a new course, plot a new path.
- 6:28Verse #18 Come, let's settle this says Yahweh.
- 6:31Though your sins are scarlet, they will be white as snow.
- 6:35Though they are Crimson red, they will be like wool here.
- 6:40Think about it with clothing that if you have some beautiful
- 6:45like white fabric, think like a wedding dress.
- 6:49And if a wedding dress is, you know, you, you pour tomato sauce
- 6:54or, you know, something that's red on there, it would be
- 6:59incredibly difficult to get out. I, I've even had various things
- 7:03over the years that, you know, if you put the wrong shirt in
- 7:09with, you know, something else, then it'll get dyed pink, You
- 7:13know, all that kind of stuff. It's never getting out that red,
- 7:17especially red dye is never ever getting out of that white thing.
- 7:22And here God says though your skin, though your sins are
- 7:27scarlet, it is deep Crimson red. It has totally stained your
- 7:33nation. It has stained you individually.
- 7:37He says they will be white as snow, though they are Crimson
- 7:41red, they will be like wool. God has the ability to heal, to
- 7:49restore, to forgive, to make you new.
- 7:53And even if you have been a person that lived in abject
- 7:57evil, our God is great enough. He is strong enough, He is
- 8:01wholly enough to be able to make you entirely new.
- 8:06So don't put off coming to Him. Don't think that you need to
- 8:09clean up your ACT before you get to God.
- 8:11Come to God, ask Him to do the cleaning, and He will do it.
- 8:16Verse #19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good
- 8:21things of the land. You have to have a desire to
- 8:25walk with God. That's what's encompassed there
- 8:29in that word. Willing if you are unwilling,
- 8:33but obedient, like if you're just doing the thing, but you
- 8:36have no, I say doing the thing. If you are doing the religious
- 8:40actions, but you have no desire to know God, to walk with him,
- 8:45to obey him, that's not enough. That's the whole point of this
- 8:49is don't get caught up just in doing religious stuff.
- 8:52He says if you are willing to know God to to be obedient to
- 8:56him and you are actually obedient, you can't just say, Oh
- 9:00yeah, I'm super willing to obey God and then never actually
- 9:04doing what he has called you to do.
- 9:06That's not good either. He says you have to be willing
- 9:08and obedient. Or if you will, in the words of
- 9:11the old hymn, you got to trust and obey.
- 9:14If you obey God, but you don't trust him, that doesn't get you
- 9:17anywhere. And you if you're trusting quote
- 9:21UN quote, and you do not obey, then you're not actually
- 9:24trusting. A godly trust, a godly
- 9:27willingness here in this verse means that I want to obey my God
- 9:31and I'll actually take steps towards that says if you're
- 9:34willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land.
- 9:37Last episode that the land was just filled with all sorts of
- 9:43bad things happening, invading armies and Raiders, sickness in
- 9:47the land, bad crops, all of that was happening.
- 9:52And he goes, if you are willing and obedient, you'll eat the
- 9:54good things of the land, he says.
- 9:56But if you refuse and rebel, the refuse is that heart posture
- 10:01against God and then you have your rebellion.
- 10:05That is, I'm going to actually make choices in my words or in
- 10:08my actions against what God has said.
- 10:11He says you will be devoured by the sword, for the mouth of
- 10:15Yahweh has spoken. God says I'm setting before you
- 10:192 paths, path of life, path of death.
- 10:22If you walk the path of life, you're willing and obedient.
- 10:25Wonderful there is good that is prepared for you.
- 10:29He says I I also love what it has here.
- 10:33He says you will eat the good things of the land.
- 10:36This is the Hebrew word tokalu. And then if he says if you
- 10:42refuse and rebel, you'll be devoured by the sword.
- 10:45It's that same word Tekalu says if you're willing and obedient,
- 10:50you'll eat the good things of the land.
- 10:51If you refuse and rebel, you'll be eaten by the sword.
- 10:55It's a way to talk about, you know, invading armies, ravaging
- 10:59parties, coming through and killing.
- 11:01It was follow God, life, good things.
- 11:05If you refuse and rebel, that is the path of death and death is
- 11:09the end of that path. One thing that is just so sad to
- 11:13me as as a pastor, so often, every single week as I try and
- 11:18walk through God's word is I see people online over and over
- 11:25again just reviling God. And even, you know, earlier
- 11:29today, at the time that I'm recording this, a couple of my
- 11:33church Tik Toks from, from preaching, there was a little
- 11:37meme that someone had had of like Jesus knocking on the door.
- 11:41And he says, Hey, you know, come in and let me save you.
- 11:45And the person inside goes, oh, from what?
- 11:47And then Jesus says, oh, from what I'm going to do to you if
- 11:50you don't let me in. And it was just such a
- 11:54blasphemous look at at Christ and shows that frankly, that
- 12:01person either has not ever been told the true story of Scripture
- 12:07or they have as here, refused and rebelled against God to such
- 12:12a degree that they are just thoroughly, thoroughly lost.
- 12:17The story of Scripture is God is life, He is goodness, He is
- 12:21holiness, He is purity. And he created us to walk that
- 12:25path, but with the freedom to be able to choose which path we
- 12:29would walk. And we walked towards the path
- 12:32of sin, death and destruction. But God loved us so much that he
- 12:36goes, OK, I will not force you into a relationship with myself,
- 12:42but I will make the way so that anyone that believes and turns
- 12:48in faith to me will experience eternal life.
- 12:52I will put them back on the path through the finished work of
- 12:56Jesus Christ, he says. But for everyone that refuses a
- 13:01relationship with me, they are headed to death and destruction.
- 13:04God will not force an eternal relationship with Himself on
- 13:11anyone, but an eternal relationship with God is the
- 13:15only way to not experience death and destruction, because that is
- 13:22who God is. You can't get all the benefits
- 13:24of a relationship with God outside of God himself, which is
- 13:28what people want to happen. They they want there to be
- 13:32eternal life and blessing and goodness without Jesus Christ.
- 13:37And you cannot that it is a it's nonsensical.
- 13:41Jesus is all goodness and rightness and joy, community,
- 13:47love. It is only ultimately truly
- 13:50found in Him. So yeah, all that from verses 19
- 13:55and 20. Be willing and obedient.
- 13:57You'll eat the good things of the land, because if you refuse
- 14:00and rebel, you'll be eaten by the sword.
- 14:03The mouth of Yahweh has spoken verse #21 He says the faithful
- 14:07town, this is Jerusalem. What an adulteress she has
- 14:12become. The that word for adulteress can
- 14:17also be a a prostitute or a harlot, someone that is
- 14:21committing fornication, someone that is unfaithful.
- 14:26And I apologize if you're watching the video version.
- 14:30Somehow I managed to scroll and it's called all the way back to
- 14:35Ecclesiastes. So it says the faithful town.
- 14:37What an adulteress. What what a prostitute that
- 14:40Jerusalem has become. He says she was once full of
- 14:43justice, righteousness once dwelt in her, but now murderers,
- 14:48people that are killing and robbing.
- 14:51You can even read through a lot of Proverbs has to deal with
- 14:54that. He says your silver has become
- 14:57dross to be discarded. Your beer is diluted with water.
- 15:02Here. Let me look real quick at this
- 15:04word. Yeah, it's either wine or beer
- 15:08from grain can do kind of double duty.
- 15:11So here, he says, Jerusalem, you were beautiful, you were a
- 15:15faithful town, but now you have become unfaithful, like an
- 15:18adulterous or a prostitute, he says, you had silver, you were,
- 15:23if you will, you were worthwhile.
- 15:25But now you've become that dross that when you heat up silver or
- 15:29gold, what is not silver or gold rises to the top of that liquid
- 15:36and you scrape off the dross so that what is left is only the
- 15:41valuable metal. And so he says now you have just
- 15:44become worthless. He says your beer or your wine
- 15:49is diluted with water. It is not going to be as strong.
- 15:54It's not going to taste right if you dilute it with water.
- 15:59And he says you have diluted what God wanted to do in and
- 16:03through His people. Verse #23 He says your rulers
- 16:07are rebels, your friends of thieves, They all love graft and
- 16:12chase after bribes. They do not defend the rights of
- 16:15the fatherless, and the widow's case never comes before them.
- 16:19It is a wicked, awful thing when people use finances in order to
- 16:27affect governmental decisions. Let the reader understand.
- 16:31Verse #24 Therefore, Yahweh, God of heaven's armies, the mighty
- 16:36one of Israel, declares, I will get even with my folks.
- 16:42I will take revenge against my enemies.
- 16:45My goodness, I don't ever want to be the person that is an
- 16:49enemy of God, a foe of God that He comes to get even with that
- 16:53he goes to take revenge against. We are told in James 4, it's I
- 17:01think it's verse four and five. He says, therefore know that to
- 17:05be a friend of the world is to be an enemy of God.
- 17:10Or we're told in Ephesians chapter 2 that outside of union
- 17:15with Jesus Christ, we are, we are enemies of God by nature.
- 17:22We start off being an enemy of God.
- 17:24So you don't have to just one day go, OK, well, now I'm going
- 17:26to turn my back on God. So many people do that as well.
- 17:30But as we are born into this world, we are imperfect, we are
- 17:35flawed, we are born at enmity with the way that God wants us
- 17:40to be. And so every one of us need to
- 17:44accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
- 17:48That is the only way of life. I'm going to hurry on here
- 17:52because I think I can get through the end of this chapter
- 17:56real quick. By the time we get to 20 minute
- 17:58mark, He says I will turn my hand against you and will burn
- 18:02away your dross completely. I will remove all your
- 18:05impurities that even here as God is taking vengeance against his
- 18:09enemies. He says I'm removing what is
- 18:12imperfect in you so that what is left is good.
- 18:16He says I will restore your judges to what they were at 1st
- 18:20and your advisers to what they were at the start.
- 18:23Godly people who do not accept bribes.
- 18:26Godly people who are not rebels or friends of thieves.
- 18:30Those that do defend the fatherless and the widows, he
- 18:33says. Those are the people that need
- 18:35to be in charge, he says. Afterward you'll be called the
- 18:38righteous city, a faithful town. Zion will be redeemed by
- 18:42justice, those who repent by righteousness.
- 18:46At the same time, both rebels and sinners will be broken, and
- 18:51those who abandoned Yahweh will perish.
- 18:54Indeed, they will be ashamed of the sacred trees you desired.
- 18:58This is a place of false worship where there would be trees and
- 19:02Groves. That they would do sacrifices to
- 19:05idols in Lots of immorality would take place there.
- 19:08He says you will be embarrassed because of the garden shrines
- 19:11you have chosen for you will become like an oak whose leaves
- 19:15are withered and like a garden without water, the strong one
- 19:19will become tender and his work a spark.
- 19:22Both will burn together with no one to extinguish the flames.
- 19:26He says these high places that during the time of Uzziah, the
- 19:31first king that Isaiah was prophesying during Uzziah
- 19:36followed the Lord in some ways, but he did not get rid of these
- 19:39false places of worship. And so here Isaiah says these
- 19:44woods are going to be burned up, these places of false worship
- 19:49are going to be destroyed when God comes to town.
- 19:53Can I ask you, are you building your life on the Lord and on His
- 19:57way and on his worship, or are you worshipping?
- 20:02With other people, are you worshipping false gods?
- 20:05What do you give your time, attention, energy, finances and
- 20:10your words to? What takes that place in your
- 20:13life that people know? OK, at this time on these days,
- 20:18this person is going to that shrine and they're going to
- 20:21dress the part and they're going to look the part and they're
- 20:23going to spend money on the part.
- 20:25But I just know that that is what that person goes to do.
- 20:29They give that thing worth and value.
- 20:34We ought to worship the Lord. And as we treat others right, as
- 20:38we treat God as supreme, we can be hopefully unlike the children
- 20:43of Israel here in this passage, and we can be much more like
- 20:48Jesus, the one who is the perfect one of Israel.
- 20:52That as Israel was imperfect in so many ways, and it's judges
- 20:55and its rulers were doing wrong, Jesus did everything right.
- 21:00Jesus was everything that these people were supposed to be, but
- 21:03could not be due to their sin. Jesus, the fully righteous One,
- 21:07has made it so we who were enemies of God can be brought
- 21:10near by His blood, His sacrificial death.
- 21:15Well, thanks for tuning in today.
- 21:17I went a little past where I went intended to, but such a
- 21:21rich portion of scripture and I want to encourage you be
- 21:25meditating on that even today. Next episode we start off in
- 21:28Chapter 2.
