- 0:03Speaker 1: Kluk k.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Legs and gentlemen, may I have your attention please? The
- 0:50Speaker 2: show starts in teen eight seven six five three shoot one.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Go Hey everyone, this is your girl sci book out
- 1:58Speaker 3: eight four three and and I know y'all think, Hold up,
- 2:02Speaker 3: it is Thursday night. What is this chick doing here?
- 2:06Speaker 3: Of course, y'all know I'm about to bring you another
- 2:10Speaker 3: author with a fire read. So y'all, y'all know the
- 2:18Speaker 3: book gonna be something When you gotta rolls on the cover,
- 2:22Speaker 3: when you really ain't need to show in the faces
- 2:25Speaker 3: of the characters. You know your book is fire when
- 2:28Speaker 3: that's happening, right, So I am bringing up author kay
- 2:35Speaker 3: Oh McGhee, and she is going to be here to
- 2:39Speaker 3: talk her the latest novel. Okay, step come on up, girlie.
- 2:46Speaker 3: How are you hey? I'm good? How you doing? I
- 2:50Speaker 3: am good? I am good. So we gonna make it
- 2:56Speaker 3: sweet smooth, and we're gonna talk about you and this
- 2:59Speaker 3: book guarded because, like I said, when you do have
- 3:03Speaker 3: a full character's space and a roads, you know that
- 3:07Speaker 3: book is up to something, correct, that's right, right. But
- 3:13Speaker 3: before we go in, your father, you have to tell
- 3:15Speaker 3: us a little bit about yourself, all right, well I
- 3:18Speaker 3: can do that. So I'm kl mgee. I'm author of
- 3:22Speaker 3: officially nine stories books from Mississippi from the South, and
- 3:32Speaker 3: oh yeah, and I'm married, I have one child. I
- 3:36Speaker 3: do write, not full time. I have a full time job,
- 3:40Speaker 3: so I get it in how I can. But I
- 3:44Speaker 3: just writing is just something that came about for me
- 3:49Speaker 3: or publishing. During the pandemic. It was something that came about.
- 3:54Speaker 3: You know, we were at home way more than we
- 3:57Speaker 3: normally were, and I had this, you know, a free
- 4:00Speaker 3: time that I put into writing. So I started in
- 4:05Speaker 3: twenty twenty. We got nine books and we're working on
- 4:08Speaker 3: more and I'm just happy to be here to talk
- 4:11Speaker 3: about this with y'all today. So, okay, how did the
- 4:16Speaker 3: pandemic start your love for writing? What? I've always loved reading.
- 4:24Speaker 3: I mean since I was a young child. I can't
- 4:28Speaker 3: remember a time I never I was you know, I
- 4:31Speaker 3: never I didn't like reading. So I came from a
- 4:36Speaker 3: family of educators, my mom, my grandma, my aunt, So
- 4:40Speaker 3: that was just always something. I was always with a book.
- 4:45Speaker 3: But in high school I took a not a creative
- 4:53Speaker 3: writing class, but like a accelerated English class, and I
- 4:58Speaker 3: was like, this is something I just I don't know,
- 5:01Speaker 3: I just wanted to do it, and my teacher encouraged
- 5:06Speaker 3: me to write a poem. So it started with poetry
- 5:09Speaker 3: and I did get a poem published then, and then
- 5:13Speaker 3: later I did write my first short story in high school.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I didn't really do anything with it, but it was
- 5:20Speaker 3: just something that I did. And then later on I
- 5:23Speaker 3: was just like, I need to revisit that, Like I
- 5:25Speaker 3: just didn't feel fulfilled with that that one thing, one
- 5:28Speaker 3: of two things. So that brought along with the continued reading.
- 5:33Speaker 3: I never stopped reading, and it was just something like
- 5:36Speaker 3: I need to explore this further and try this again. Okay,
- 5:41Speaker 3: that is that's awesome because I've heard a lot of
- 5:44Speaker 3: people come from the COVID era and they found that creativity,
- 5:48Speaker 3: So that is awesome. You wasn't like me took the
- 5:51Speaker 3: pistil in Hamilton. No, No, not help. I discovered Hamilton
- 5:58Speaker 3: during COVID Okay, so guarded. Yes, cover says so little
- 6:11Speaker 3: but gives so much to desire from it. Yes, tell
- 6:16Speaker 3: us a little bit about your vision or if you
- 6:21Speaker 3: had a uh someone who did it for you, how
- 6:24Speaker 3: did you relate your vision of your book to your cover? Well? Actually,
- 6:30Speaker 3: I did do this cover I have. I didn't do
- 6:34Speaker 3: them all, but this one I did. And I mean,
- 6:37Speaker 3: I feel like you hit it on the nail on
- 6:39Speaker 3: the head. I wondered there it's a mystery because this
- 6:44Speaker 3: is a bodyguard romance. I didn't want you to think
- 6:47Speaker 3: too much about what the characters look like. I really
- 6:49Speaker 3: want you to think about this story and how where
- 6:54Speaker 3: the guarding part comes from, Like where did this come from? So,
- 6:58Speaker 3: like I said, the keeping mystery, you just don't put
- 7:00Speaker 3: too much out there, but just know that, hey, listen,
- 7:04Speaker 3: there's gonna be some twisting turns in this one. So
- 7:09Speaker 3: I don't like to use genres a lot. Okay, but
- 7:13Speaker 3: you know, everybody, especially where I work at and I
- 7:17Speaker 3: work at a public library, okay, always know what genre
- 7:21Speaker 3: is this book? Uh, we got black romance. I even
- 7:26Speaker 3: get into the tropes bodyguard romance. We got a famous person,
- 7:33Speaker 3: but I do the black love black characters. You know,
- 7:38Speaker 3: we're gonna get into it. And it's all of my
- 7:41Speaker 3: stories are gonna follow two people falling in love. We're
- 7:44Speaker 3: gonna have the romance, we're gonna have a little spice,
- 7:47Speaker 3: and we're gonna, you know, get a good story in
- 7:49Speaker 3: there too. Okay, Okay, so what we talk about we
- 7:54Speaker 3: talk about a little bit of pepper, or we're talking
- 7:58Speaker 3: about let me get a dream milk. Okay, Okay, Now
- 8:03Speaker 3: we gonna be honest with you this this particular book,
- 8:06Speaker 3: you don't need the milk, but you don't. But but
- 8:11Speaker 3: but it's not closed door. Now. The spice is there,
- 8:14Speaker 3: you know, little paprika, a little bit of you know,
- 8:16Speaker 3: black pepper. But you don't need the milk for this one.
- 8:19Speaker 3: You have some you you may need to bring the
- 8:21Speaker 3: milk out for, but not feel so I'll be honest
- 8:23Speaker 3: with you. I really this story was on my heart
- 8:27Speaker 3: and I feel like I put a lot into the
- 8:28Speaker 3: actual story of this and how it came about. So
- 8:34Speaker 3: and when I write the spicy as it comes towards
- 8:36Speaker 3: the end for me. So you know, uh, it's there,
- 8:41Speaker 3: but not not one of my more spicy your stories. Yes,
- 8:47Speaker 3: but you know what that is absolutely fine because yeah,
- 8:50Speaker 3: you might have those people to say, okay, I just
- 8:52Speaker 3: want a little I want a little drop, right, or
- 8:56Speaker 3: you might have that person like me like just that's okay,
- 9:01Speaker 3: And that's what I had to do, you know, Okay,
- 9:05Speaker 3: y'all know he just slapping. Yes, I apologize to anybody.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I'm not offended, but I do love erotica books. I mean,
- 9:17Speaker 3: it's so Boris Boris. Boris tell us a little bit
- 9:25Speaker 3: about Boris. So this is a standalone but Boris is
- 9:32Speaker 3: a character from a previous book that I was like, Okay,
- 9:37Speaker 3: it's time for him to tell his story. I said,
- 9:39Speaker 3: this is stand alone. You don't have to read any
- 9:41Speaker 3: other book to know anything about But I feel like
- 9:43Speaker 3: this truly gave me his gave the readers his true
- 9:47Speaker 3: personality and explain why Boris is how he is. He
- 9:52Speaker 3: has a full time job, he's an engineer, but he's
- 9:54Speaker 3: an entrepreneur. He's trying to start these security business. He
- 9:59Speaker 3: has work with some high profile clients, and he's just
- 10:04Speaker 3: like this playboy, just you know, feeling his way and
- 10:08Speaker 3: doesn't have any relationships. He's not tied down. He's just
- 10:11Speaker 3: living his best life. But he still has some reservations
- 10:18Speaker 3: from a past relationship. I think he's hung up on
- 10:22Speaker 3: that and that's why he's so carefree and just not
- 10:26Speaker 3: ready to be tied down, because he's in the back
- 10:28Speaker 3: of his mind he's still thinking about that relationship from
- 10:31Speaker 3: his younger days. His early twenties, So, uh, Guarden does
- 10:37Speaker 3: take you on a short story of how and why.
- 10:41Speaker 3: There's some flashbacks so you know, some things that happen
- 10:44Speaker 3: to make him the way he is, to show you
- 10:47Speaker 3: know where how he becomes this coming into his manhood
- 10:52Speaker 3: of being a man and wanting to excuse me, settle down.
- 10:57Speaker 3: So you keep saying short, it's one hundred and fifty pages.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Did you want it to be a short story? Yeah?
- 11:07Speaker 3: I do feel like once I got through with it,
- 11:10Speaker 3: that the story that I was looking to tell was told.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And I do a lot of spin offs, so that
- 11:19Speaker 3: doesn't mean that you won't see these characters ever again
- 11:22Speaker 3: and maybe get more of their story or something else.
- 11:25Speaker 3: But I do feel like it was complete, and I
- 11:27Speaker 3: do feel like what I was trying to say about
- 11:29Speaker 3: Boris and Tiana digys it and you know what, as
- 11:34Speaker 3: a reader, I love sometimes I love these short books.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Read the beating is because sometimes I don't have the
- 11:41Speaker 3: time to sit down there and read a full book,
- 11:44Speaker 3: but I want to meet potatoes and the dessert and
- 11:49Speaker 3: a good amount of time right and being able to say,
- 11:53Speaker 3: ooh I feel complete after reading that book, or oh
- 11:56Speaker 3: I can't wait till the next one. And let me
- 11:58Speaker 3: explain that to you guys, because some people can write
- 12:02Speaker 3: a cliffhanger and leave you lost, but some people can
- 12:06Speaker 3: write a cliffhanger and leave you wanting self. I agree.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Tiana Tianna, tell us about her becauseee, that's I love
- 12:18Speaker 3: that name. I love the princess and the frag So
- 12:21Speaker 3: Tiana is a very beautiful name. So tell us a
- 12:23Speaker 3: little bit about this beautiful woman. She's a entrepreneur as well.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Tianna has her life together, she has her things together.
- 12:32Speaker 3: She has she's an actress with model turned actress. She
- 12:40Speaker 3: got into the modeling business early on. She's had this
- 12:44Speaker 3: very very successful career. She has charities and things that
- 12:49Speaker 3: she's given back to she does have a daughter, but
- 12:55Speaker 3: she's just been going through life. She she does have
- 12:58Speaker 3: a special someone in her life. It's not really going
- 13:01Speaker 3: that well. It's not what she thought it was. But
- 13:03Speaker 3: you know, she's just talking like the best of her situations,
- 13:07Speaker 3: and she has some things that that are not going
- 13:09Speaker 3: as well as they could be. There's a mention of
- 13:12Speaker 3: grief and death and because she does have a family
- 13:16Speaker 3: family member to pass away, and I think she has
- 13:20Speaker 3: a lot of unanswered questions from her past too, that
- 13:22Speaker 3: she didn't even realize she had until this this magical moment. Now,
- 13:29Speaker 3: I do see that with both of your characters, Boris
- 13:31Speaker 3: and Tiana, that they have a similar situation when it
- 13:38Speaker 3: comes to grief and losing someone. Is that something that
- 13:43Speaker 3: you wanted to have in the book as a common
- 13:45Speaker 3: denominator and that just hey, I just put that in there. No, No,
- 13:51Speaker 3: that was that was a part of it, I said,
- 13:54Speaker 3: I don't know, this story was just because of special
- 13:56Speaker 3: to me. Like I said, there's a lot of flashbacks
- 13:58Speaker 3: because they didn't know each other previously and and you know, reconnected.
- 14:05Speaker 3: So I think for me it was it was a
- 14:09Speaker 3: part of the story. Yeah, a part of the plan.
- 14:14Speaker 3: So what is your your vision of being a writer?
- 14:21Speaker 3: I don't know that changes that that changes. I enjoy it,
- 14:29Speaker 3: you know, And sometimes they don't go. It's the plans
- 14:32Speaker 3: don't go as smoothly as as possible. Life happens. Things happen,
- 14:36Speaker 3: And I'm one of those writers where if if I'm
- 14:40Speaker 3: not in the right headspace, it's just not gonna work.
- 14:42Speaker 3: It's not gonna flow. It's it's just not I'm a
- 14:45Speaker 3: mood writer. So I had this terrible, terrible day and
- 14:50Speaker 3: things are going wrong. You might as well just go
- 14:52Speaker 3: to sleep because it's not gonna happen. So what that
- 14:56Speaker 3: bean said, I don't know if full time writing is
- 14:59Speaker 3: for because when you're writing full time and you're trying
- 15:04Speaker 3: to pay your bills off that you got to write
- 15:07Speaker 3: through whatever. So you know, I don't know if that
- 15:10Speaker 3: would ever be for me. I do enjoy it. I
- 15:12Speaker 3: don't have a goal number of books I want to write.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I just want to keep writing. I want to reach
- 15:20Speaker 3: my readers. I want to reach my target readers. I
- 15:23Speaker 3: want to find my tribe, and I have to a
- 15:26Speaker 3: certain extent, but I want to keep growing. I want
- 15:28Speaker 3: to people to read ko and write books. I want
- 15:32Speaker 3: to be you know, somebody's favorite authors. So this has
- 15:37Speaker 3: been growing in the industry to do a few more
- 15:42Speaker 3: collabs I have done in the past, but but just
- 15:46Speaker 3: to you know, like I said, growing my craft. Write
- 15:48Speaker 3: good stories that people enjoy, that leave people with wanting more.
- 15:54Speaker 3: So you know, as far as I want to write
- 15:57Speaker 3: six hundred books, I don't have that. I just want
- 15:59Speaker 3: to keep going. So you said, you want to find
- 16:03Speaker 3: your tribe, you want to get your attendant on your
- 16:06Speaker 3: your audience. Who would be considered your tribe. Who is
- 16:12Speaker 3: your readers? People that love it happily ever afters You're
- 16:18Speaker 3: gonna have that kalem wrights will have a happier after Now.
- 16:22Speaker 3: They may go through some stuff to get there, but
- 16:24Speaker 3: they will have that. You know, somebody that, like it said,
- 16:30Speaker 3: enjoys a good story, a good pl that that appreciates
- 16:35Speaker 3: the process that writers go through to get you these
- 16:38Speaker 3: these books, because it's it's definitely not the easiest thing,
- 16:42Speaker 3: you know, we do, but somebody that loves a good
- 16:47Speaker 3: story can appreciate, you know, even a quick read. Some
- 16:50Speaker 3: of them are SOFM maren looking for a happily of
- 16:54Speaker 3: it after black love, black romance, some spice. You know,
- 16:58Speaker 3: there are a lot of things, ingredients that go into
- 17:01Speaker 3: you know, a ko and Wright's book. Okay, so when
- 17:07Speaker 3: you're not writing, what are you doing? I read a lot.
- 17:13Speaker 3: That's like I said earlier, That's something that I've always done.
- 17:16Speaker 3: I try not to read while I'm writing, So if
- 17:19Speaker 3: I'm deep in a in a story or storyline, I
- 17:23Speaker 3: try not to. I still do read quite a bit.
- 17:29Speaker 3: I like to spending time with my family friends. I
- 17:34Speaker 3: like shopping, so you know, buying random things, and I
- 17:40Speaker 3: like going concerts. This year seems to be like my
- 17:42Speaker 3: concert year. Concerts and traveling. It seems to be what
- 17:45Speaker 3: I've been a thing for this year for me, So
- 17:50Speaker 3: you know, I like doing the fun things, but I
- 17:52Speaker 3: like writing too. So so you said, come to you
- 17:56Speaker 3: whoever you going to see Beyonce? I got Cowboy Carter.
- 18:06Speaker 3: So yes, So Beyonce is the biggest one this year.
- 18:11Speaker 3: I have some more plan hopefully I can see Chris
- 18:14Speaker 3: Brown and some others, but Beyonce was the big one
- 18:20Speaker 3: for the year. So so you're you're one of those
- 18:23Speaker 3: be hive people. Well, I don't know if I'm a
- 18:26Speaker 3: true behigher, but I did enjoy myself. And I didn't
- 18:29Speaker 3: sing sing the songs. I know the songs, I know
- 18:33Speaker 3: the words Cowboy Carter, I don't know. I really did
- 18:36Speaker 3: enjoy the album, So you know, I don't know if
- 18:39Speaker 3: I'm a stand but I did enjoy myself. I feel
- 18:45Speaker 3: bad when I say that, you guys, I can't name
- 18:50Speaker 3: one song on the codeboard Cowboy, Oh no, No, we're
- 18:56Speaker 3: gonna be in the car. I'm gonna be When she
- 19:00Speaker 3: would when Kelly and Michelle. You know, I'm a surviva type. Yes,
- 19:09Speaker 3: A lot of people didn't like the Cowboy Carter thing
- 19:11Speaker 3: as much as they like some of her other things.
- 19:13Speaker 3: But I did get into it and I enjoyed it.
- 19:16Speaker 3: And I played the songs every day so I can
- 19:18Speaker 3: sing for the concert. So I was ready. I was ready.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So we got like ten more minutes, okay, And I
- 19:28Speaker 3: can tell you behind the stage that we do this
- 19:32Speaker 3: little segment because I love music. But I'm an old
- 19:35Speaker 3: school head. Okay, music, and I love tip. Don't ask
- 19:42Speaker 3: me a star name, I will look at Okay, go there, okay,
- 19:48Speaker 3: But these are fun questions. Okay. So my first fun
- 19:53Speaker 3: question is if any R and B singer can play bors,
- 19:59Speaker 3: who would be? And why? Oh? I don't know why.
- 20:08Speaker 3: The first person that comes to mind was Tyrese. Oh
- 20:13Speaker 3: okay and why? Okay, So you said Tyres From the
- 20:19Speaker 3: little bit that I read, I got more of Lord Trees.
- 20:25Speaker 3: No not not? Oh god, Tank okay, okay, I can
- 20:31Speaker 3: see I can see Tank okay, but Tint that's not
- 20:35Speaker 3: too far apart. So I can see that they both wine. Yeah, okay,
- 20:44Speaker 3: And so we're talking about Tiana, okay. So I actually okay,
- 20:51Speaker 3: actress would be her and we can do singer athos,
- 20:55Speaker 3: but what actress would be her? Oh? I couldn't. I
- 20:59Speaker 3: can can't figure out any because I because I'm gonna
- 21:05Speaker 3: see this this person act oh.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Oh.
- 21:11Speaker 3: I was once thinking Maxine, Erica Alexandra le okay because
- 21:20Speaker 3: some not all her roles of joking joking, she has
- 21:23Speaker 3: really serious roles. But then I also was thinking tempt
- 21:27Speaker 3: bloods up. I need to see Temps before I can
- 21:31Speaker 3: see Erica. I can see first, I can. I can
- 21:35Speaker 3: see if we're talking music because it seems like I
- 21:39Speaker 3: get you when you say that.
- 21:40Speaker 1: R and B.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Sierra. Oh, Sierra Sierra, because Sierra Sierra has done the modeling.
- 21:52Speaker 3: She's talent, multi talented. Yeah, Sierra, I ask you a
- 21:58Speaker 3: video Sierra in some promo I d and on TikTok.
- 22:01Speaker 3: So definitely see her. That was easy. You did that one?
- 22:05Speaker 1: That was that?
- 22:07Speaker 3: Yes, you did that one? Mm hmm. Yeah, I see her.
- 22:11Speaker 3: I can't say somebody else, but here see her definitely
- 22:14Speaker 3: for me. No, no, I can't see her. I was
- 22:20Speaker 3: thinking Kay Michelle, but she's a little bit too strong
- 22:24Speaker 3: for me. She she gets ya. She you know, she's
- 22:28Speaker 3: from she's from Memphis and she gets down with the
- 22:30Speaker 3: get down so and she'll let you know where you
- 22:32Speaker 3: can get out real quickly. And I'm not mad at
- 22:39Speaker 3: it now, I'm not that's It's not the type of character.
- 22:43Speaker 3: But you know, I'm I love Calle No, I love
- 22:49Speaker 3: and I'm trying to think of I can think of
- 22:50Speaker 3: anybody else, but I I really I think you hit
- 22:53Speaker 3: it on on the neck. No key, she plays around
- 22:57Speaker 3: too much. She's not a singer. I like you like ky,
- 23:04Speaker 3: I like, I really like her. I was thinking, oh,
- 23:10Speaker 3: what's the girl from Insecure? Oh, Lisa, that Nissa ray
- 23:21Speaker 3: m h. You can see that one. I can see
- 23:24Speaker 3: that one. Okay, I can see yea when she does,
- 23:27Speaker 3: because even think of some of her other stuff outside
- 23:30Speaker 3: of Insecure. Okay, Okay, that's close to thing Kiki because
- 23:34Speaker 3: she's kind of tall, you know, a model, so she
- 23:37Speaker 3: has to have that tall model model model look. So
- 23:41Speaker 3: definitely Okay, I like that. So here's another question that
- 23:46Speaker 3: I think I'm just gonna add and ask everyone. Okay,
- 23:51Speaker 3: you got a call from Lifetime. They love your books
- 23:55Speaker 3: and they want to do a biopic about you. Who
- 23:59Speaker 3: would play youth and why did you give them that honor.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Candy Birds from the Real Housewives of Atlanta. Okay, okay,
