- 0:36Let's get started. To God be the glory.
- 0:42Welcome back to the Healthy and Redeemed podcast.
- 0:45I'm your host, Haley. Today we're going to be
- 0:47finishing up our talk on grief. I will be talking about what
- 0:54prolonged or complicated grief looks like.
- 0:56How do you know if you're in it? And also, I will talk about some
- 1:02practical ways to move through the grieving process in a
- 1:07healthy way. So let's pick up with our
- 1:09conversation where we left off last time.
- 1:13Sometimes people feel like they're in this stage of
- 1:16prolonged or complicated grief. Like they feel like, Oh my gosh,
- 1:19I think I'm stuck. But really, if you look back and
- 1:23go, OK, like maybe Christmas came and something happened that
- 1:30really reminded you of your loved 1:00, and you're just like
- 1:35crying for two days or something like that.
- 1:38And then we think, oh, my gosh, I'm stuck in grief.
- 1:40I'm never going to get out. But really, you have to look
- 1:44back. And it's like, how has this
- 1:46whole past year been? Am I reacting in the same exact
- 1:51way that I would have six months ago or a year ago?
- 1:55Just because you have an intense emotion at a point doesn't mean
- 2:00you're in complicated grief or prolonged grief or that you're
- 2:04stuck in one of the stages. It just merely means you're
- 2:07experiencing a point of grief. According to the Center of
- 2:12Prolonged Grief that Columbia University, and I'm going to
- 2:16quote this here, prolonged grief is a grief that continues to be
- 2:20intense and pervasive, disrupting everyday life for
- 2:25longer than a year. People experiencing prolonged
- 2:29grief often describe it as feeling stuck in grief or frozen
- 2:33in time, as if the death has just happened.
- 2:38Grief dominates their thoughts and feelings, making it
- 2:41difficult to think about or concentrate on anything else.
- 2:45The future seems bleak and empty.
- 2:49They feel lost and alone. Relationships with the loved
- 2:52ones flounder, as does their own health.
- 2:57So you will see that is pretty extreme right?
- 3:00And most people after a year, although they still may be
- 3:05grieving, they have improved their functioning over time.
- 3:12So there is a small percentage of people that are in prolonged
- 3:17or complicated grief, sometimes a prior trauma or a loss or if
- 3:23they've got history of anxiety or mood disorders, insecure
- 3:28attachment or being a caregiver of the deceased, maybe they've
- 3:33experienced lack of support or some violent cause of death.
- 3:40That is when prolonged grief is going to be more more likely to
- 3:46happen. You're you lean one way when
- 3:49you've had these things happen, you're going to lean that way,
- 3:53but it doesn't mean necessarily that you're for sure going to
- 3:58experience prolonged grief. Like if you've had maybe your
- 4:02loved one died a violent death, you're going to lean toward the
- 4:06way of that could be prolonged grief, but it doesn't 100% mean
- 4:12you're going to experience. You are going to have a intense
- 4:17grief, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to
- 4:20be complicated or prolonged. A lot of that depends on your
- 4:26resiliency skills, how well you've done in the past with
- 4:29losses, what you've learned through those, your personality.
- 4:35And I also believe it has to do with how healthy your
- 4:39relationship with Jesus is. Columbia University actually has
- 4:44a self-assessment for prolonged grief, and I'm going to put that
- 4:48in the show notes. So if you think I'm having some
- 4:52of those symptoms that I mentioned, then just take this
- 4:56self-assessment and see if you might be experiencing that.
- 5:00According to the American Psychiatry Association, an
- 5:05estimated 7 to 10% of bereaved adults will experience the
- 5:10persistent symptoms of prolonged grief disorder.
- 5:15And among children and adolescents who have lost a
- 5:18loved one, approximately 5 to 10% will experience depression,
- 5:23post traumatic stress disorder, or and or prolonged grief
- 5:27disorder following their bereavement.
- 5:31So here are some symptoms of prolonged grief disorder.
- 5:37I'm going to just read these through identity disruption,
- 5:41such as feeling as though part of oneself has died.
- 5:46Marked sense of disbelief about the death.
- 5:51Avoidance of reminders that the person is dead.
- 5:55Intense emotional pain, such as anger, bitterness, sorrow
- 6:00related to the death. Difficulty with reintegration,
- 6:04such as problems with engaging with friends, pursuing
- 6:08interests, planning for the future.
- 6:11Emotional numbness, absence, or marked reduction of emotional
- 6:16experience. Feeling that life is
- 6:19meaningless, intense loneliness, feeling alone or detached from
- 6:25others. So if you've experienced grief,
- 6:29you're like, well, I've had all of those.
- 6:32And yes, that may be true. But actually for a diagnosis of
- 6:36prolonged grief disorder, the loss of your loved one had to
- 6:40have occurred at least a year ago for adults and at least six
- 6:45months ago for children or adolescents.
- 6:50And you have to have experienced three of those symptoms that I
- 6:54mentioned nearly every day for at least the last month prior to
- 7:00the diagnosis. So even though you've
- 7:02experienced probably those symptoms at some point in your
- 7:07grieving process, it is unlikely that those are still occurring a
- 7:15year after the death of them and that you're experiencing all of
- 7:23those symptoms or at least three of those symptoms every day for
- 7:28at least 30 days. So just keep that in mind.
- 7:33There's a self-assessment link in the show notes.
- 7:36Let's end this portion of grief, this difficult journey of grief,
- 7:43with some practical steps for a healthy grieving process.
- 7:47OK, so I am not saying that if you follow these tips that you
- 7:56are not going to feel grief. I'm saying you're going to feel
- 8:01grief. You're going to feel all the
- 8:04yucky emotions that nobody likes to feel or wants to feel.
- 8:10However, these things are going to help you.
- 8:14You don't necessarily, I don't think you have to do all of
- 8:17them, but implementing some in your life will help you move
- 8:22through the process in a healthy way.
- 8:25And so we're not trying to get rid of the grief, we're trying
- 8:28to process through the grief in a healthy way.
- 8:31OK #1 tell the story of death and effects of it on your life.
- 8:39It's important if you're going through grief that you talk
- 8:42about the person that you've lost.
- 8:45You talk about the effect that they've had on your life, the
- 8:48profound effect that they've had on other people.
- 8:51This is very important. It's a way to honor them.
- 8:54And bringing honor to our loved one that has passed is a healing
- 9:02#2 Understand the grief process and the effects of loss.
- 9:08Grief is not one and done. There may be times in your life
- 9:11that you feel it again. It may not be as intense as you
- 9:16felt it when it first happened, but things like weddings or
- 9:20births of children are going to be times where you miss that
- 9:24person desperately. So just note that it is
- 9:29important that we understand the grief process because that helps
- 9:34us work through it and helps remind ourselves that we're
- 9:38normal and this is a part of life here.
- 9:41Some great places to help you understand, you can Google most
- 9:48anything, right? We can Google about the grief
- 9:51process and the effects that loss has on our life.
- 9:55But a couple good resources. H Norman, right?
- 9:59He's an expert in grief, grieving and loss.
- 10:04He has written some wonderful books and I encourage you, if
- 10:08you haven't read a book by him and you've gone through grief,
- 10:11he's a great resource to have. So H Norman, right?
- 10:16He's got quite a few books. He's got his own website too.
- 10:20That's even got a lot of resources on there.
- 10:23So I encourage you to check him out.
- 10:28There's also some grief support groups, one's called Grief
- 10:31Share, and that is a great resource for people to plug into
- 10:38and you can go through this process in a healthy way and
- 10:42learn about grief. Also, there is a gentleman by
- 10:47the name of Kevin Ellers ELLERSI believe, and he has a workbook
- 10:53on Amazon that can help you work through some processes of grief.
- 11:00Also #3 identify the stages of grief that you have felt so far.
- 11:06So as we talked about grief, like just being a healthy person
- 11:10in general, if we're able to identify our emotions, that is
- 11:15an important part of being healthy and it doesn't change in
- 11:19the grief process. We want to be able to identify
- 11:23different feelings that we're having at different times.
- 11:26That just helps us be healthy. So we know, oh, this is a normal
- 11:31part of grieving is I'm feeling angry at that person, at myself,
- 11:36at God. That is normal #4 verbalize your
- 11:41feelings or emotions. This is an important part of
- 11:46being a healthy person in general.
- 11:48Also is verbalizing our feelings.
- 11:51We can do this through a journal.
- 11:53We can do this with friends, We can do this through spoken
- 11:57prayer is talk and verbalize our feelings.
- 12:01This helps it get out of our body #5 attend a grief support
- 12:07group. I mentioned grief share.
- 12:08Normally if you look up Hospice in your community, they'll
- 12:12normally host grief groups. You don't have to use the
- 12:17services of Hospice to attend a grief support group.
- 12:22Just call them and they'll connect you with some resources.
- 12:27Number six, be aware if you're avoiding the grief process and
- 12:31maybe identify what are those obstacles.
- 12:34Once you identify why you're avoiding the process or or what
- 12:39obstacles you have, then it's important to remove them so you
- 12:42can again move through #7 refocus on what life looks like
- 12:48without them. What did they do for me?
- 12:51How am I going to manage that myself now or how am I going to
- 12:55have others help me to do these things?
- 12:58So if you have a loved one that was really close to you and they
- 13:03helped you with lots of things, like they paid all the bills or
- 13:06they took care of the car maintenance, or they did all
- 13:10these things and now they're gone, you have to kind of look
- 13:15like, OK, these are the things I'm going to have to learn how
- 13:17to do, or I'm going to have to hire some of them to do them or
- 13:20have some friends help me with these things.
- 13:22You have to begin to look at life a little differently now.
- 13:26You have to look at what life looks like without them.
- 13:31So we're not going to stick our head in a hole, right?
- 13:34We're going to figure out what life looks like now #8 if we
- 13:41have feelings of guilt or we're stuck in anger, we need to be
- 13:45intentional about working through those, especially if
- 13:49there's some sense of unforgiveness.
- 13:52If the bitterness or anger is coming from unforgiveness, that
- 13:55we work through that process. I do have an episode on
- 13:58forgiveness, so if you want to go back and check that out if
- 14:01that's something that you're struggling with.
- 14:03A #9 express unsaid things through a letter or an empty
- 14:09chair or at the gravesite. So it's important that those
- 14:15things that you feel like you didn't get to say, it's
- 14:17important to get those things out.
- 14:20So we can write them a letter. We can set up an empty chair and
- 14:24talk to them like they were there, or we can go to the
- 14:28gravesite and talk to them there.
- 14:30So it's important that we're getting whatever is left unsaid,
- 14:34we're getting that said #10 talk about the loved ones with other
- 14:38family members through memories. It is important that we don't
- 14:43just never speak of them because we're scared we're going to cry
- 14:46or we're scared we're going to upset someone.
- 14:48It's very important that we honor their life, especially
- 14:52through good memories, and it's great to do that at family
- 14:56gatherings. Maybe you have a special dish
- 14:59that they liked or you just share some stories of like,
- 15:02wouldn't they think that was the funniest thing?
- 15:04Things like that. It can't be hard and people may
- 15:07shed some tears. You might shed a tear.
- 15:10It's still an important part of the grieving process.
- 15:13Do you want to teach your children godly traits such as
- 15:15kindness, gratitude and forgiveness?
- 15:18The Red Ball is a story of Renata, a young girl who
- 15:21receives a special gift. When that gift goes missing, she
- 15:25is left to figure out what to do.
- 15:27Through her journey, she learns a lot about herself and what
- 15:30forgiveness really means. The lessons found in the book
- 15:34can be made even more meaningful with the Red Ball Companion
- 15:37Activity Book. Featuring over 30 activities,
- 15:42both books are the perfect addition to any homeschool
- 15:44curriculum or as a thoughtful anytime story.
- 15:48Get your copy today and help your child build a heart that
- 15:51reflects Jesus #11 When coming up on new days without the loved
- 16:01one, like the anniversary of death or birthdays or holidays
- 16:04that we mentioned earlier, it is important to make a plan on how
- 16:08you're going to spend that day and, and choose something you
- 16:13can do to honor them or that's going to really bring some good
- 16:18feelings for you. It is so important that you make
- 16:22a plan. Don't just sit around and dread
- 16:24the day is coming. Make a plan for the day.
- 16:27I promise you it's going to help you feel a lot better.
- 16:31It may well most certainly it's still going to be a sad day, but
- 16:36it is going to give you an underlying sense of peace when
- 16:39you have a plan for the day. I can't tell you how many people
- 16:43have let these days slide in without any preparation.
- 16:48And it is really affected them hard, much harder than if
- 16:53someone has a plan. They're going to go here,
- 16:55they're going to release some balloons, they're going to go to
- 16:57the graveside, they're going to volunteer at their favorite
- 17:00place. They're going to do something
- 17:03that helps them honor that loved one.
- 17:05Maybe they're going to take the day off work, whatever #12 if
- 17:09you're grieving seems to be interfering with your daily
- 17:13functioning, it might be helpful to set up a grieving time.
- 17:18So if you listen to the last episodes on worry, I talked
- 17:23about a coping skill called worry time.
- 17:26And this is basically a time that you set aside to worry.
- 17:30And in the grieving process, you set aside a time to grieve.
- 17:34So if you're having a hard time getting through the day, which
- 17:38will be typical, it's very normal and common for that to be
- 17:42in the early days. But if you're three months down
- 17:46the road and you're still having a hard time functioning at your
- 17:49job or just getting things done, maybe setting aside a grieving
- 17:54time would be helpful. So that day from 7:00 to 8:00
- 17:59PM, you're just going to set aside a time to cry, to think,
- 18:06to be depressed, to just get all in your feelings.
- 18:12And that way during the day is your, these waves come, you can
- 18:16go, OK, I'm just going to set that aside.
- 18:19And we're going to come tonight. And I'm going to think about
- 18:24that and process that and just let myself feel it #13 look for
- 18:32ways to honor your loved one. And this can be serving at their
- 18:36favorite charity, making a donation to their charity,
- 18:40making good choices in life, doing things with your life that
- 18:45honor them #14 this is a spiritual one.
- 18:50Pray, read the Bible, find some scriptures that are helpful to
- 18:55lean on. It is so important to be
- 18:57spiritually disciplined at this time.
- 19:00And this is going to be really hard.
- 19:02It's going to be hard to pray. It's going to be hard to read
- 19:05the Word. But be open with God as you pray
- 19:11about your feelings. Tell him you don't have the
- 19:13words to say. Ask Him to lead you to
- 19:16Scripture. That's helpful, but reading
- 19:20Scripture is going to remind you of God's promises.
- 19:24It's going to give you hope. It's going to give you
- 19:27gratitude. It's going to help us look for
- 19:30things to thank God for even as we are broken hearted #15 Keep a
- 19:38regular routine as much as possible.
- 19:41Try to get back into a regular scheduler routine as soon as you
- 19:47are able to do that. Now, I'm not saying it's going
- 19:50to be easy. You're going to have a hard time
- 19:52concentrating. You're going to have a hard time
- 19:55remembering things. You may seem a little scattered,
- 19:58but just know that's normal. But it's important and it's
- 20:02healthy that you get back to the things that God has created for
- 20:07you to do. And it is going to help your
- 20:10mental health in the long run as well #16.
- 20:15Maintain good sleep, exercise and eating so you're going to
- 20:19take care of yourself physically.
- 20:21Make sure you're eating in a healthy way.
- 20:23Ensure you're sleeping at least 8 hours a night and exercising
- 20:28in some way once a day. In previous episodes, we talked
- 20:31about creating healthy coping skills.
- 20:34This is why it's so vital that we have these healthy things
- 20:40integrated into our life every day.
- 20:43So when these big things happen in our life that we've already
- 20:48got good things to lean on, this is going to help us move through
- 20:53whatever situation in a healthier way.
- 20:57So if trauma comes if. If death of a loved one comes,
- 21:01if major stress comes or anxiousness comes, we are we
- 21:07have got our life in a way that's healthy already and
- 21:11that's going to help us move through things in a healthier
- 21:14way #17 socialize. This is important in all times
- 21:20of our life, but especially important when we are struggling
- 21:24emotionally. So maybe having coffee with a
- 21:26friend, joining an extra Bible study so it'll help you engage
- 21:31with others, asking someone to lunch, doing something to
- 21:36socialize. As we mentioned, this is
- 21:38important part of being healthy in our everyday life, and it's
- 21:43especially important when we're going through something
- 21:47extremely difficult. Also #18 ask for help.
- 21:52If you need help practically or emotionally, please reach out to
- 21:56someone for help. Like, this is so hard for us to
- 22:00do, right? But people want to help.
- 22:05People care about you and me and they want to help.
- 22:09We have to just, you know, step on our pride a little bit and be
- 22:16humble and ask people for help. Ask God for help.
- 22:21This Put people in your life so you can lean on them.
- 22:26Don't worry, you can pay them back someday.
- 22:29But for now, allow yourself to lean on the people that God has
- 22:33put in your life #19 give others grace.
- 22:40I know, but I preach this all the time because I've.
- 22:44Yeah, People aren't going to respond perfectly to you.
- 22:50I if you've experienced a hard time in your life.
- 22:54I know I have. I'm sure you have.
- 22:57People are going to say and do all the wrong things.
- 23:02Loss, death, grief. It can make others feel really
- 23:05uncomfortable, and it will often lead them to say and do things
- 23:09that just seem frankly insensitive.
- 23:12But we have to know, and we have to remind ourselves that people
- 23:17do care. Sometimes they're just awkward
- 23:21because they don't know how to show it or to say it.
- 23:27We have to give people grace. We can't just walk around angry
- 23:31because people aren't responding to us in the right way.
- 23:34People aren't going to say the right things.
- 23:36They're going to say things that are insensitive.
- 23:38I have been shocked at some of the things that I have heard
- 23:42people say, but honestly, I've probably said insensitive things
- 23:46too. Well, I'm going to take that
- 23:49back. I know I've said insensitive
- 23:51things not on purpose, but just because I had nothing else to
- 23:54say and something just come out of my mouth.
- 23:57So have grace for people, know that they do care and you're
- 24:02just going to have to not be easily offended and try to
- 24:07easily forgive. I know it's hard.
- 24:09You're already having a hard time, but it is important to
- 24:13give people grace and #20 is to wait before you make big
- 24:21decisions. I know that a lot of decisions
- 24:24have to be made in especially in the early months of someone
- 24:30passing and depending on if it was a spouse or child or a
- 24:35parent, like you do have to make lots of decisions.
- 24:38But if it can wait, I would encourage you to wait a bit to
- 24:43make big decisions. I'm a big encourager of don't
- 24:47make decisions in the midst of emotions.
- 24:53When you're having a lot of big and a lot of emotions, it's not
- 24:57a good time to be making decisions in.
- 24:59So if you can prolong some decisions, I would encourage you
- 25:03to do that and wait till you're feeling a little bit more stable
- 25:07cognitively to do that. So that is 20 practical steps to
- 25:13have a healthy grieving process. Again, you can do all those
- 25:19things. That doesn't mean you're not
- 25:20going to hurt, you're not going to grieve, and you're not going
- 25:22to have a hard time, but these things will hopefully help you
- 25:26go through the process in a healthier way.
- 25:29Also, there can be some really helpful grieving exercises that
- 25:34you can do that are in some different grieving books.
- 25:37And if you can find a book that's written by some
- 25:43professionals, people that have worked in the grief field for a
- 25:46long time, do those, I would encourage you to do that.
- 25:52When professionals share what they know, like these things
- 25:55that I've shared, that's because I've worked with people grieving
- 26:00for many years. So generally those things work.
- 26:04Now, not all things work for every individual, but just
- 26:08generally speaking, those things will be helpful.
- 26:11Let's close today's episode with some scripture, some that I find
- 26:18encouraging. From Ecclesiastes 3 one through
- 26:228, you'll probably find it very familiar.
- 26:25There is a time for everything and a season for every activity
- 26:30under the heavens. A time to be born and a time to
- 26:35die. A time to plant and a time to
- 26:39uproot. A time to kill and a time to
- 26:43heal. A time to tear down and a time
- 26:47to build. A time to weep and a time to
- 26:51laugh. A time to mourn and a time to
- 26:56dance. A time to scatter stones and a
- 27:00time to gather them. A time to embrace and a time to
- 27:05refrain from embracing. A time to search and a time to
- 27:10give up. A time to keep and a time to
- 27:14throw away. A time to tear and a time to
- 27:19mend. A time to be silent and a time
- 27:24to speak. A time to love and a time to
- 27:29hate. A time for war and a time for
- 27:34peace. Healthy people understand there
- 27:39are seasons in life, Seasons that are hard, and seasons to
- 27:45move forward, to laugh, to dance, to heal, to mend.
- 27:52Life moves forward no matter whether we want it to or not.
- 27:57The morning comes, the sunsets, the tides come in and goes out.
- 28:05First Thessalonians chapter 4, verses 13 and 14 say, Brothers
- 28:13and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who
- 28:17sleep in death so that you do not grieve like the rest of
- 28:21mankind who have no hope for. We believe that Jesus died and
- 28:27rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus
- 28:32those who have fallen asleep in him That, friends, is really
- 28:39good news for believers. We believe that when we die that
- 28:43we are with Jesus and all those who have put their faith in
- 28:48Jesus will be with him when they leave this life.
- 28:52We have hope, we know truth, and we know we serve a good,
- 28:59faithful, and compassionate God. It is vital to always be working
- 29:05on learning about God and the truths as He shared in the Bible
- 29:10because this is going to help us not get stuck in the loss, but
- 29:14get stuck in the hope we know this world is but for a moment
- 29:19of time and eternity. We grieve, yes, but we must
- 29:24grieve with hope as our foundation because we don't
- 29:28grieve like the man who has no hope.
- 29:31We grieve like a person who has hope, and our hope is in Jesus
- 29:37Christ. This is from Revelation 21,
- 29:42three through 4. And I heard a loud voice from
- 29:47the throne saying, Look, God's dwelling place is now among the
- 29:52people, and he will dwell with them.
- 29:56They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be
- 30:01their God. He will wipe away every tear
- 30:06from their eyes. There will be no more death or
- 30:11mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has
- 30:16passed away. Remember, we can rejoice because
- 30:21we are moving closer to a time where there will be no more
- 30:26mourning, no more death, no more crying.
- 30:29All will be made right as it was intended, from creation.
- 30:33This is what we can rest our hope in.
- 30:35God intended us for life. He didn't intend for us to have
- 30:41tears or pain or death, and we are going to be able to rest in
- 30:47Him. Meanwhile, you can know that God
- 30:52is with you. He loves you and He hurts with
- 30:55you. He will comfort you though, if
- 30:59you let him, and He will bring you joy.
- 31:02Again, Friends, thank you so much for joining me.
