- 0:13the birthplace of baseball, open.
- 0:15May it forever stand as a symbol of clean play and good sportsmanship.
- 0:20Ladies and gentlemen, the place of privilege of being the first
- 0:23to walk out of the Hall of Museum of Baseball is Connie Mack,
- 0:26and now he's in front of the microphone.
- 0:28I feel greatly honored in being here today
- 0:32where our first national game was started by Abner Doubleday.
- 0:42And now the twelve players in the Baseball Hall of Fame,
- 0:46elected by the Baseball Writers Association,
- 0:49Wee Willie Keeler, he hit him where he ate,
- 0:53Christy Mathewson, baseball's big six, master of the fadeaway
- 0:58and famous pitcher for the Giants,
- 1:01Honus Wagner, the flying Dutchman,
- 1:03the greatest shortstop in the game's history.
- 1:05Ladies and gentlemen, I was born in 1874.
- 1:11This organization started in 1876.
- 1:15And when I was just a kid, I said, I hope someday I'll be up there playing in this league.
- 1:20And by chance I did.
- 1:22Connie Mack, the gentleman that preceded me here at the mic,
- 1:26I remember walking 14 miles just to see him play ball for Pittsburgh.
- 1:32However, I want to thank you for being able to come here today.
- 1:36The next memorial to come before the mic is Tris Speaker,
- 1:43greatest defensive player of all time and a great hitter.
- 1:47Thank you, Shelley, and I'm very happy indeed to have been chosen by the sports writers
- 1:51as a member of this great hall of fame. Thank you.
- 1:55Nap Lajoie, baseball's greatest second baseman and a model of grace.
- 2:04Ladies and gentlemen, I'm very glad to be here today and to meet all the old timers.
- 2:10The next is Cy Young, and we must go into superlatives on Cy Young,
- 2:16for he is the only pitcher who has ever won 500 baseball games.
- 2:20Nothing pleases me better than to be about and see and know
- 2:25that the young generation today is following our footsteps.
- 2:31This is about the proudest day of my life.
- 2:33Why, I'd be glad to be the bat boy for such a team as this.
- 2:36Thank you very much.
- 2:38In my dreams I often think what I could do today with a team like they were,
- 2:43if they could be now what they were then.
- 2:45I would have no mistakes to be worrying about,
- 2:48or when they hit those line drives off me I would have no trouble wondering who was going to get them.
- 2:54I hope someday that some of the young fellows that are coming into the game
- 2:57will know how it feels to be picked on the hall of fame.
- 3:01I know the old boys back in there, we were just talking it over.
- 3:05Some had been here long before my time.
- 3:08They got on it and I worked hard and I got on it.
- 3:11And I hope that the coming generation of the young boys today,
- 3:14that they'll work hard and also be on it.
- 3:17As my old friend Cy Young says, I hope it goes another hundred years
- 3:20and the next hundred years will be the greatest.
- 3:22You know, it seems like an anniversary for me too and I'm surely glad
- 3:26it's a pleasure for me to come up here and be picked also on the hall of fame.
