Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Spite the flick with benow Shade. Good morning, Good morning.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I have watched the trailer for this and what's jumped
- 0:12Speaker 1: out at me straight away is that Aaron Chen is
- 0:14Speaker 1: in it. Yes, exactly, exactly, So tell us about the thing.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Let me just start with Aaron Chen. He's also one
- 0:22Speaker 1: of the worst things about this movie. I feel like
- 0:25Speaker 1: I'm going to burst a lot of bubbles out there.
- 0:28Speaker 1: So there's a there's heaps of people who play pickleball,
- 0:31Speaker 1: and there's another there's another version of it. I can't
- 0:33Speaker 1: remember what that's called. It's paddleball. Maybe that's the one
- 0:37Speaker 1: that's not copyright conflicting names. Yeah, and so it's I
- 0:40Speaker 1: guess it's it's popular with older players and sends people
- 0:45Speaker 1: to the emergency. A lot of people do their knees
- 0:48Speaker 1: playing pickleball. And so this comes from producer Ben Stiller,
- 0:52Speaker 1: who obviously is a superstar. And so you might be thinking,
- 0:54Speaker 1: you know what, this is going to be a bit
- 0:56Speaker 1: like Dodgeball, that very funny, cold comedy years ago based
- 1:00Speaker 1: on a niche sport, and they're going to do the
- 1:02Speaker 1: same thing with pickleball. What's not to love about that? Well,
- 1:05Speaker 1: in terms of this movie, the Dink on Apple TV.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Plus everything is not to like about this movie. So
- 1:10Speaker 1: it tells the story of Dusty played by Jake Johnson,
- 1:14Speaker 1: who's an actor who most people probably won't be familiar
- 1:16Speaker 1: with the name, but you look, oh yeah, that guy,
- 1:19Speaker 1: that guy, he's one of those actors. And so he
- 1:22Speaker 1: plays a former child prodigy who was pushed into tennis
- 1:27Speaker 1: and elite tennis by his dad, who's played by Ed Harris,
- 1:30Speaker 1: the Amazing I love Ed Harris, who could do no wrong.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And then very early on in his tennis career, he
- 1:36Speaker 1: gets his first big break in a pro tournament where
- 1:39Speaker 1: he faces off against a young Andy Roddick and just
- 1:42Speaker 1: absolutely beefs that. He just capitulates completely runs off the
- 1:47Speaker 1: court in disgrace, and so that's basically the end of
- 1:50Speaker 1: his tennis career at the age of sixteen, disappoints his
- 1:54Speaker 1: dad and he's spending the rest of his life trying
- 1:55Speaker 1: to win back his dad's respect. So when his dad's
- 1:58Speaker 1: beloved tennis courts tennis club is under threat from the
- 2:02Speaker 1: encroachment of pickleballs, so the pickleball side of the tennis
- 2:06Speaker 1: club wants more and more courts at the tennis club
- 2:09Speaker 1: and Ed Harris is trying to battle that and the
- 2:12Speaker 1: only way to resolve it at the AGM is they
- 2:15Speaker 1: come up with this idea of a duel. So the
- 2:18Speaker 1: tennis side has to come up with a champion, the
- 2:20Speaker 1: pickleball side comes up with a champion. They have to
- 2:22Speaker 1: play each other. Whoever wins gets control of the courts.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And so Dusty wants to be that player. His dad
- 2:29Speaker 1: doesn't believe in him, so it's his journey of sort
- 2:31Speaker 1: of figuring out who he is, what's important to him.
- 2:34Speaker 1: He starts playing pickleball on the side with a group
- 2:37Speaker 1: of older women led by Mary Steenbergen, Ted Danson's wife,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and so on the surface, that all sounds pretty good.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And the name the Dink comes from the sound pickleball,
- 2:51Speaker 1: a little drop shot tennis exactly. They say, you're dropping
- 2:55Speaker 1: it into their kitchens if you make it like the
- 3:00Speaker 1: service line in tennis. Yeah, and then you've got the
- 3:04Speaker 1: what do you call it, the edge of the service box,
- 3:06Speaker 1: So that's like forms the kitchen and you're not allowed
- 3:10Speaker 1: to step in there to hit it on the full
- 3:13Speaker 1: or something like that. And then there's this weird kind
- 3:16Speaker 1: of romance between Jake Johnson and Mary Steenberger and she's
- 3:20Speaker 1: like probably thirty five years older, and she's not very
- 3:24Speaker 1: sure about what's going on there, and the movie is
- 3:26Speaker 1: not very sure about what's going on there. It's quite awkward.
- 3:29Speaker 1: There's an Andy Roddick cameo and a John mackra cameo
- 3:32Speaker 1: that's pretty funny, but it's just not funny. And Aaron Chen,
- 3:38Speaker 1: I swear to you, this was a role that they
- 3:40Speaker 1: originally wrote for Rebel Wilson. She mustn't have been available
- 3:44Speaker 1: because of the various legal issues, and they've gone, who
- 3:47Speaker 1: else can we get? Let's get Aaron Chen because he
- 3:50Speaker 1: is playing Rebel Wilson. It is so terble, so cringe worthy,
- 3:57Speaker 1: like I wouldn't be I'll be amazing if he ever
- 3:58Speaker 1: works in Hollywood again after this. She's been so bad.
- 4:01Speaker 1: This sounds like something that's going straight to streaming. Yeah, yeah, exactly,
- 4:05Speaker 1: And so it is straight. So don't sign up to
- 4:06Speaker 1: Apple tv plus to watch the Dink. That's what I'm saying.
- 4:10Speaker 1: There are a lot of other good there's lots of
- 4:13Speaker 1: stuff on Apple tv plus has and that's why I'm
- 4:16Speaker 1: looking forward to because the hit rate is incredible. To
- 4:20Speaker 1: some of the other streaming service. This is one of
- 4:21Speaker 1: the worst movies they've ever had on Apple. Oh my god.
- 4:23Speaker 1: So they won't be they won't be hearing this. They
- 4:26Speaker 1: won't be hearing this sound. No, they might need the raspberries.
- 4:31Speaker 1: How many rebel Wilson can ruin a movie without even
- 4:34Speaker 1: being in it? Yeah, yeah, so true, so true. One
- 4:38Speaker 1: one one. I would rather be whacked by a pickleball
- 4:42Speaker 1: than ever watch this again. I think I want to
- 4:46Speaker 1: watch it now just to see how bad it is.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Well done, the job
