- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not So Fast, my friends. Welcome to Not So Fast.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I'm Andrew Perloff.
- 0:17Speaker 3: He is Paul Pabst.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Got to keep your head on a swivel around here.
- 0:20Speaker 2: There's so many sports going on. What do we got
- 0:22Speaker 2: going on, Paul?
- 0:22Speaker 4: We got Nicole Auerbach of NBC Sports. She covers college football.
- 0:26Speaker 4: She's going to tell us about the 2014 playoff and
- 0:28Speaker 4: the fallout from it as it about to happen. But,
- 0:31Speaker 4: you know, Brewers fans, enjoy your weekend. Hit the fish
- 0:34Speaker 4: fry tonight. Watch the Badgers tomorrow. Watch the Packers on
- 0:37Speaker 4: Sunday night. What a night for the Brewers.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, full disclosure.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yesterday, you refused to admit the Dodgers were done done,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and I said it's over. Was there any point last
- 0:46Speaker 2: night where you thought, okay, maybe we have a series?
- 0:48Speaker 4: Okay, so the Brewers beat the Dodgers 6-4. They sweep.
- 0:51Speaker 4: But there was a moment when Otani, who was struggling,
- 0:53Speaker 4: hit that home run in the bottom of the second,
- 0:55Speaker 4: and the place went berserk. It was like they'd been
- 0:57Speaker 4: asleep for three days. And bango, watch Ohtani's celebration. He
- 1:01Speaker 4: never celebrates. That was a frustration celebration. People were reaching
- 1:05Speaker 4: for the sky. For that second, I thought, this is
- 1:08Speaker 4: the Dodgers night, and the Brewers don't come back tonight.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I still think they win the series, but I thought
- 1:12Speaker 4: it was Dodgers night last night.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Well, I don't think anyone was aware that the Brewers
- 1:16Speaker 2: have Sandy Koufax and.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Nolan Ryan in their bullpen.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Their bullpen is so untouchable in this series that the
- 1:23Speaker 2: Dodgers didn't have a chance once it got in the
- 1:25Speaker 2: late games.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Jake Bowers, again, he's the NLCS MVP. He did it. Hamilton,
- 1:31Speaker 4: everyone did it for them. They got it 4-4, and
- 1:33Speaker 4: once the air went out of the room, I didn't
- 1:35Speaker 4: think the Dodgers could come back.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Well, yeah, and also the odds, again, we argued about this.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Only one team has ever come back from 3-0, and
- 1:41Speaker 2: that was an anomaly, the Red Sox. So it wasn't
- 1:43Speaker 2: going to happen for the Dodgers. Before we talk about
- 1:45Speaker 2: the Brewers, the Dodgers' future, I think it looks murky.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I thought they looked old, they looked tired, they looked
- 1:52Speaker 2: emotionally drained is how I would describe them.
- 1:54Speaker 4: It seems like they have some of their higher-end talent
- 1:56Speaker 4: under contract, Kyle Tucker, Betts is a little older. How
- 1:59Speaker 4: old is Betts?
- 2:00Speaker 2: Betts is 34. Freeman's 37. Shohei's 32. It looks like
- 2:04Speaker 2: Will Smith has hit the end. It looks like Max
- 2:06Speaker 2: Muncy has hit the end. Teoscar Hernandez. Kiki Hernandez, our
- 2:11Speaker 2: fall hero, he's probably gone via free agency.
- 2:13Speaker 3: I think they need— you can't.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Rebuild when you have all those contracts on the books,
- 2:16Speaker 2: but don't they feel like they need a jolt of energy?
- 2:19Speaker 4: Also, I think when you lose in this embarrassing fashion,
- 2:21Speaker 4: you have to satisfy the fans with movement. It doesn't
- 2:24Speaker 4: matter what the movement is. You have to move people.
- 2:26Speaker 4: You have to let people go. You have to trade people,
- 2:28Speaker 4: cut people. You have to reset the roster to a
- 2:30Speaker 4: point they've got so much money invested already.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well, here's the other problem. You have a lockout coming,
- 2:35Speaker 2: and the owners want a salary cap. If there's a
- 2:38Speaker 2: salary cap, the Dodgers are going to be way over it,
- 2:40Speaker 2: whatever it is. Maybe they won't be able to make
- 2:43Speaker 2: those moves. Maybe they discuss on DP's show, is the
- 2:46Speaker 2: dynasty over? Is it a dynasty? I don't even know,
- 2:49Speaker 2: but I think the future is not that bright.
- 2:53Speaker 4: When you spend that level of money, you stay relevant
- 2:55Speaker 4: year to year. If you look at the Yankees, they
- 2:57Speaker 4: always spend money and they almost always make the playoffs.
- 2:59Speaker 4: They haven't won since 2009. It does feel like The
- 3:02Speaker 4: last five or I think it was six times the
- 3:04Speaker 4: Dodgers won 100 games. They didn't win the title, which
- 3:06Speaker 4: is weird because it means you're doing great during the
- 3:08Speaker 4: regular season. You're just not getting it done.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Well, I think I'm eyeballing it. I watch the Brewers,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and they seem to do everything right. They're running around fielding.
- 3:14Speaker 2: They're stealing bases. They're hitting home runs. They feel like
- 3:17Speaker 2: a youthful energy team.
- 3:19Speaker 4: So I look this up. Now, everyone knows the Brewers
- 3:21Speaker 4: don't spend. They traditionally don't spend. They make tough decisions
- 3:23Speaker 4: and let people go. A guy like Jackson Churrio, you
- 3:27Speaker 4: love him. They may not be able to keep him
- 3:29Speaker 4: two years from now. They are a disciplined financial team.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Do you know who has the biggest analytics department in
- 3:35Speaker 4: all of Major League Baseball? Your Milwaukee Brewers. That's where
- 3:38Speaker 4: they spend their money. They look at players, and it's
- 3:40Speaker 4: not money ball, it's analytic ball, but they say, we
- 3:43Speaker 4: have to patchwork a roster together Because we're not giving
- 3:45Speaker 4: anybody 10 years, $ 300 million.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and obviously their big star is Miz. And will
- 3:51Speaker 2: they keep him long-term? But do they even need him?
- 3:53Speaker 2: Because they are a team that says, third time in
- 3:56Speaker 2: the lineup, the starter is gone.
- 3:58Speaker 3: So they're bullpenning their way to the World Series.
- 4:00Speaker 4: And your boy Ashby in the bullpen, a three-inning save
- 4:02Speaker 4: last night. I was like, what is it, 1979? Was
- 4:05Speaker 4: Lee Smith here?
- 4:06Speaker 3: Is this 1983?
- 4:06Speaker 4: A three-inning save?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yeah, no, the Dodgers just ran into a bit of
- 4:10Speaker 2: a buzzsaw here. To your credit, you did say, watch out,
- 4:13Speaker 2: coming into the playoffs. It feels like Milwaukee is going
- 4:15Speaker 2: to break through at some point. And you know what's
- 4:17Speaker 2: so funny? Because in the AL, the Guardians take the lead.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It feels like the AL is an afterthought. Like they
- 4:23Speaker 2: are just getting set up to get mowed down by
- 4:25Speaker 2: this 100-win Brewers.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Which is dangerous for the Brewers because everyone's going to
- 4:29Speaker 4: be like, well, you should just cruise past these guys.
- 4:31Speaker 4: It reminds me a little bit of when the Red
- 4:33Speaker 4: Sox got by the Yankees in 04. And they faced
- 4:35Speaker 4: the Cardinals, traditionally a good franchise. They swept them. But
- 4:38Speaker 4: if they didn't, the story had no ending.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Well, if you have the Brewers going against the 84-win Guardians,
- 4:44Speaker 2: I think everyone's going to assume Milwaukee's going to win that.
- 4:47Speaker 3: But this year, things feel weird.
- 4:49Speaker 4: It's a bit of a reset. I did see a
- 4:51Speaker 4: couple times last night and today that the Brewers upset
- 4:55Speaker 4: the Dodgers.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Is that fair? Yeah, I mean, I think a lot
- 4:57Speaker 2: of us picked the Dodgers.
- 4:59Speaker 4: But that's like a historical upset, but this year the Brewers.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yeah, but the Dodgers mailed in the entire month of August.
- 5:04Speaker 3: They were not.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Maybe that's part of it.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Well, I think the Dodgers never recovered from that, but
- 5:08Speaker 2: the Dodgers could have had more wins than the Brewers. Anyway, football,
- 5:12Speaker 2: by the way... Let's transition to the third-hand football.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Tough game last night.
- 5:15Speaker 3: That was not pretty.
- 5:17Speaker 2: No, that was not an aesthetically pleasing game.
- 5:19Speaker 4: The last 30 minutes were fun. The first 45 minutes,
- 5:23Speaker 4: not so fun.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Well, there was a couple minutes in the beginning where
- 5:25Speaker 2: it looks like the Broncos have fixed their offense, and
- 5:28Speaker 2: then it all just fell apart.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Yeah, the Broncos had a good second quarter, two touchdowns.
- 5:32Speaker 4: They win 17-14 in overtime. But if you look at
- 5:35Speaker 4: both sides of this, I don't think I'd feel good
- 5:37Speaker 4: if I were either fan base coming out of this one.
- 5:40Speaker 4: 353 total yards. Sam Darnold attempted 51 passes. That's not
- 5:44Speaker 4: what he should be doing. That's not how he's built.
- 5:47Speaker 4: He's more of a 21 for 28 to touchdown guy
- 5:50Speaker 4: and a run for honor 50 yards. He had two
- 5:53Speaker 4: interceptions in the fourth quarter and overtime. They were completely
- 5:56Speaker 4: on him.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Ooh, I don't know. I'm with Herbie. Herbie was blaming
- 6:01Speaker 3: number 15 there all night.
- 6:02Speaker 4: For not coming back to it.
- 6:03Speaker 2: No, he didn't cut his route off. He didn't run
- 6:06Speaker 2: a sharp route. He just faded.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Okay, so it's a little bit some people's fault. But
- 6:09Speaker 4: if you look at it, Darnold only needed two more
- 6:11Speaker 4: first downs.
- 6:12Speaker 2: But you watch that offense. Darnold has to do everything.
- 6:15Speaker 2: He had to throw the ball into tight windows to
- 6:17Speaker 2: get it to JSN because JSN is double-teamed, and he's
- 6:19Speaker 2: the only guy on your team who can catch the ball.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I thought Darnold had a tough assignment, and he was
- 6:23Speaker 2: pressured all night long.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Five sacks.
- 6:25Speaker 2: 17 quarterback hits.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Is that on Darnold? There's no run game to help
- 6:29Speaker 3: him at all.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Okay, but you have to steal a win here in
- 6:31Speaker 4: this division. And in overtime, he had that interception in overtime.
- 6:36Speaker 4: They were cruising down the field to get the field
- 6:38Speaker 4: goal to put this one to bed. An ugly night
- 6:40Speaker 4: and a win. And they gave it back to the Broncos.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I hear you, but Seattle, I think they'll get Jadarian
- 6:45Speaker 2: Price back in two weeks, I believe. They're going to
- 6:47Speaker 2: get Zach Charbonnet back possibly next week. If they can
- 6:50Speaker 2: have a run game, they'll be okay. But Same thing
- 6:52Speaker 2: with the Dodgers. They're tired. And I'll tell you why.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They played into mid-February, and you can see the injuries everywhere.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Remember Sam Darnold hurt his glute earlier?
- 7:00Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, bad glute.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, which he hurt his butt. JSN is limping still
- 7:04Speaker 2: with an ankle injury. Jadarian Price was out. Everybody seems
- 7:07Speaker 2: to be hurt there. But I'll tell you why, if
- 7:09Speaker 2: you're a Bronco fan, you're optimistic.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Okay, I was going to ask you about this because
- 7:12Speaker 4: you've been sticking by the Broncos. Ryan Fitzpatrick crushed them yesterday.
- 7:15Speaker 4: He was talking about how bad the Broncos quarterback play is.
- 7:18Speaker 4: It seems like it's open season on Bo Nix.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it is open season.
- 7:22Speaker 2: We'll get into Nix for a second. But if you're
- 7:24Speaker 2: down on the Broncos, you're making a mistake.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Really?
- 7:26Speaker 2: They're 4-2. They have played. I'm looking at the Super
- 7:29Speaker 2: Bowl odds. Out of the top seven teams in Super
- 7:31Speaker 2: Bowl odds, they played five of them. And they're 4-2.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Okay, so they're not being judged fairly.
- 7:35Speaker 3: They lost to the Niners, who are the Super Bowl
- 7:37Speaker 3: favorite right now.
- 7:38Speaker 2: They lost to the Chiefs, who are fifth in odds.
- 7:41Speaker 2: They beat the Jags. They beat the Seahawks, who are
- 7:43Speaker 2: up there. And they beat the Rams, who are number
- 7:45Speaker 2: two in odds. They have played the hardest schedule by
- 7:48Speaker 2: a mile, and their two losses are on the road.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So even if they have no offense, their defense is
- 7:53Speaker 2: good enough to get them the playoff.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Okay, you're starting to actually convince me here a little bit.
- 7:56Speaker 4: You're saying 4-2 with that schedule, no matter how ugly
- 7:59Speaker 4: it was, is a great 4-2.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and listen, their defense is legit. Now let's get
- 8:03Speaker 2: into Bo Nix. And you mentioned Ryan Fitzpatrick. After the game,
- 8:05Speaker 2: Ryan Fitzpatrick had some really ugly things to say about
- 8:08Speaker 2: the Broncos quarterback.
- 8:10Speaker 6: It was really frustrating to watch. And part of it
- 8:12Speaker 6: for me is Bo Nix is not playing competitively. It's
- 8:16Speaker 6: almost disrespectful to the quarterback position how he's playing football.
- 8:20Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 8:21Speaker 7: What do you mean when you see?
- 8:22Speaker 4: How is he playing?
- 8:23Speaker 6: He has no trust from his coach. He calls a
- 8:25Speaker 6: screenplay on third and eight. Just run up and let
- 8:29Speaker 6: the clock keep going. What does he do? He throws
- 8:31Speaker 6: it away. Seattle gets the ball. They have a timeout.
- 8:33Speaker 6: And then in overtime, he's got two chances to be competitive.
- 8:36Speaker 6: The last one being a designed run for him. to run,
- 8:40Speaker 6: make somebody miss, and get a first down for your
- 8:43Speaker 6: football team.
- 8:44Speaker 4: That was quite saucy by Ryan Fitzpatrick, but I'm going
- 8:46Speaker 4: to get to the meat of that. He said his
- 8:48Speaker 4: coach doesn't trust him and is calling plays to protect him.
- 8:51Speaker 4: That doesn't seem like the same guy who at the
- 8:53Speaker 4: end of the season was this clutch killer in the
- 8:55Speaker 4: fourth quarter.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, but you see the production. It's just
- 8:58Speaker 2: not there. He can't throw intermediate passes. They don't try
- 9:02Speaker 2: long passes.
- 9:02Speaker 4: That's not a good play there. You shouldn't do that.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Well, Ryan Fitzpatrick really dug into that one play where
- 9:07Speaker 2: it looked like he had the first down with his legs,
- 9:09Speaker 2: and for some reason, Bo Nix just didn't get it.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Last year, he made all those first downs. This year,
- 9:13Speaker 3: it's not happening.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Yeah, there was a stat that guys don't run out
- 9:15Speaker 4: of bounds going past the line of scrimmage. Bo Nix
- 9:19Speaker 4: might be gun-shy. You said yesterday he's got to run.
- 9:21Speaker 4: I think he ran twice.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it felt like a game where someone's got to win.
- 9:26Speaker 2: But I'll tell you right now, Denver is not out
- 9:28Speaker 2: of the mix. Their defense is amazing.
- 9:29Speaker 4: No, I'm with you a little bit. If they get
- 9:31Speaker 4: healthy on defense and a little bit of offense, I
- 9:33Speaker 4: still don't understand the Jalen Waddell usage situation. I don't
- 9:35Speaker 4: think I ever will. How about some helmet stickers for
- 9:38Speaker 4: last night? Not-so-fast helmet stickers. You affix this to your helmet.
- 9:41Speaker 4: And you look cool around practice. Here we go, Pearl.
- 9:43Speaker 4: You're up first.
- 9:44Speaker 6: Okay.
- 9:44Speaker 2: I'm going to say on that Broncos defense we're talking about,
- 9:46Speaker 2: Nick Benito was awesome.
- 9:48Speaker 3: He only got half a sack last night.
- 9:50Speaker 2: But part of the reason that they got five sacks
- 9:52Speaker 2: overall is because the defense had to rotate towards him
- 9:55Speaker 2: because he was killing his guy. He's the ultimate spin
- 9:57Speaker 2: move guy. He did three in a row once. I
- 10:00Speaker 2: love what he's doing. He was a defensive player of
- 10:03Speaker 2: the year candidate last year. He started off slow, but
- 10:05Speaker 2: now he looks healthy and he's back.
- 10:07Speaker 4: And you and I don't love sacks. We like hurries.
- 10:09Speaker 4: We're big hurry guys and pressure guys.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. We're Sacks.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Anyone can get sacks. Hurries are where the money's made.
- 10:14Speaker 2: He looks kind of small and fast.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I like that.
- 10:18Speaker 4: He's number 15, right? He doesn't look as big because
- 10:21Speaker 4: he's got a quarterback number. It makes him look thinner.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think he's the heart and soul of
- 10:25Speaker 2: what could be. Last year, the Seahawks got defense all
- 10:28Speaker 2: the way to the Super Bowl. I think the Broncos'
- 10:30Speaker 2: defense is in that kind of conversation. They could be
- 10:32Speaker 2: good enough to take Denver into the playoffs and maybe farther.
- 10:36Speaker 4: My helmet sticker is Jaquan McMillan, the defensive back, the
- 10:39Speaker 4: overtime pick of Sam Darnold. This was a beautiful play
- 10:42Speaker 4: by him. This basically saved the game. The Seattle Seahawks
- 10:45Speaker 4: are cruising down the field. They're going to get it.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Not so fast. I'm going to get it to my
- 10:48Speaker 4: kicker in these awesome uniforms. So good for him.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Good pick.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Great pick.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 3: I thought you blamed Arnold on that pick.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Oh, but it's got to be a team effort.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Yeah. No, it was a really nice play. Towards the end,
- 10:59Speaker 2: it felt like a mercy kill because neither team really
- 11:02Speaker 2: deserved a win.
- 11:03Speaker 4: But the problem is when those games are so tight,
- 11:05Speaker 4: even though they're ugly, you've got to stay up for
- 11:07Speaker 4: the finish. You can't go to bed. You don't want
- 11:08Speaker 4: to be the guy who missed that.
- 11:09Speaker 2: And then I wanted to go to bed, and then
- 11:10Speaker 2: Ryan Fitzpatrick comes out on fire killing Bo Nix.
- 11:13Speaker 3: I don't want to listen to that.
- 11:14Speaker 2: All right.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Now it's time for the little bit premature midday pick-me-up, Pearl.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Here we go. Midday pick-me-up time. You're going to like
- 11:21Speaker 4: this one. Oh, A-L-C-S. The afternoon game.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Bingo.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Two-run homer. Cleveland takes the lead. Never look back. Love
- 11:33Speaker 4: the uniforms. Nice look.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Okay, Paul.
- 11:37Speaker 3: It looks bright and sunny.
- 11:39Speaker 2: And they had to move the game for weather, and
- 11:40Speaker 2: the rest of the weekend looks like a weather disaster.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm checking my Doppler, and there was no rain
- 11:45Speaker 4: during game time later that day. But they had to
- 11:47Speaker 4: make the decision early. A lot of people, the old school,
- 11:50Speaker 4: the old heads, loved afternoon playoff baseball.
- 11:52Speaker 2: No, it felt like I was a kid again. It
- 11:54Speaker 2: was super fun, but it is going to be a mess. Apparently,
- 11:57Speaker 2: it's going to get worse today and tomorrow.
- 12:00Speaker 3: It's so funny.
- 12:00Speaker 2: The ALCS, I'm sorry, feels like an afterthought because of
- 12:03Speaker 2: these weather changes. You're not quite sure where it is.
- 12:06Speaker 2: And obviously, you don't have the big stars. All right.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Coming up next, I'll go through the 2024 quarterback class
- 12:12Speaker 2: and try to make sense of it. And we'll get
- 12:14Speaker 2: more into the 24-team playoff in college football. That's next.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Not so fast.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Yeah, those tight games.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:21Speaker 4: You want to turn it off, but then you're like, oh, God.
- 12:24Speaker 4: You need a nice blowout.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Also, the NFL games are chaos right now because of
- 12:27Speaker 2: the kickoff.
- 12:27Speaker 4: You need a blowout if you want to go to bed.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast, Perloff and Paps. All right,
- 12:33Speaker 2: I'm going to start off warm takes on this football Friday.
- 12:36Speaker 2: It looks like we're going to have Caleb Williams for
- 12:38Speaker 2: the Chicago Bears and Michael Penix for the Atlanta Falcons
- 12:41Speaker 2: on Sunday. Now, this makes me think of the 2024
- 12:44Speaker 2: class of quarterbacks, which was supposed to be one of
- 12:47Speaker 2: the greats of all time. It tied a record with 1983,
- 12:50Speaker 2: of course, the great quarterback class. for most QBs taken
- 12:53Speaker 2: in the first round at six. And it looked like
- 12:55Speaker 2: it was going to be one of the best classes ever.
- 12:58Speaker 2: As it turns out, it may not be the best,
- 13:00Speaker 2: but it's definitely the most confusing. The first breakout star
- 13:03Speaker 2: was Washington's Jaden Daniels, 2024 Rookie of the Year. He
- 13:07Speaker 2: just can't stay healthy, and he has trouble reading clocks apparently,
- 13:10Speaker 2: but that's beside the point. The next breakout star, Drake May.
- 13:14Speaker 2: He came in second in MVP voting, went to the
- 13:17Speaker 2: Super Bowl. Then he came out this season and forgot
- 13:19Speaker 2: how to play the sport. Meanwhile, Bo Nix was captain
- 13:23Speaker 2: comeback last year and probably would have taken the Broncos
- 13:25Speaker 2: to the Super Bowl if he didn't get hurt the
- 13:27Speaker 2: round before. But he's been up and down in 2026.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Then there's number one overall pick Caleb Williams. He looks
- 13:34Speaker 2: great with coach Ben Johnson.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Bears scored 59 points in week one. Then what happens?
- 13:40Speaker 2: He hurts his hamstring in week two. Same with Michael Penix.
- 13:43Speaker 2: He comes back from injury and makes the Falcons look
- 13:46Speaker 2: extremely dangerous on offense.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Then he gets nicked up.
- 13:50Speaker 2: At the end of the day, there's only one quarterback
- 13:52Speaker 2: from the class of 24 who's playing for a division-leading team,
- 13:56Speaker 2: and that, of course, is the Giants' J.J.
- 13:58Speaker 3: McCarthy.
- 13:59Speaker 2: All right, he had a few snaps. He might not
- 14:01Speaker 2: be starting, but he's out there. If anything, this class
- 14:04Speaker 2: proves that we don't know anything about these quarterbacks coming
- 14:06Speaker 2: into the draft, and sometimes two or three years after
- 14:09Speaker 2: the draft, we're not so sure. Hopefully, we'll find out
- 14:12Speaker 2: some good things this weekend when Williams plays Pennix. Yeah,
- 14:17Speaker 2: what do you think there, Paul?
- 14:17Speaker 4: I love the presentation of all that.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you, Riley, the editor, for pulling that off.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Very sparkly, very fun.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, is it possible that we're.
- 14:25Speaker 2: In mid-January and the only guy alive from the 24
- 14:27Speaker 2: class is Jackson Dart?
- 14:29Speaker 4: It is funny because they've all had their moment in
- 14:31Speaker 4: the sun. Two years ago, Jaden Daniels was the future
- 14:34Speaker 4: of the sport, and if you did the redraft, it's
- 14:36Speaker 4: Jaden Daniels. Eleven months ago, it's Caleb Williams. Then at
- 14:41Speaker 4: one point, oh, look at Bo Nix. How about Bo Nix?
- 14:44Speaker 4: Michael Penix was off the radar for a couple years,
- 14:46Speaker 4: and now it's like, Michael Penix may have a nice
- 14:48Speaker 4: career ahead of him. It just goes day to day.
- 14:51Speaker 6: J.J.
- 14:51Speaker 4: McCarthy is as far off the radar as you can get,
- 14:53Speaker 4: but he has a chance. It's wild how it rotates.
- 14:56Speaker 3: It's funny to me, too.
- 14:57Speaker 2: We used to know after one or two years how
- 14:59Speaker 2: a quarterback's NFL future is going to be. Once in
- 15:02Speaker 2: a while, a Carson Wentz goes off the rails, but
- 15:04Speaker 2: we have no idea with these guys.
- 15:06Speaker 3: We really don't know. I don't even know if Caleb
- 15:08Speaker 3: Williams is going to be a star.
- 15:09Speaker 4: It does feel like Williams, when healthy, is a kind
- 15:11Speaker 4: of quarterback who can lead you back.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Really?
- 15:14Speaker 3: Based on what?
- 15:16Speaker 4: Oh, I didn't know you didn't watch the 2025 season.
- 15:18Speaker 4: How many games did they pull out of the year?
- 15:20Speaker 2: Bo Nix did the same thing. Are you sure that
- 15:22Speaker 2: Caleb Williams is going to be the star that you
- 15:23Speaker 2: think he is?
- 15:24Speaker 6: Star?
- 15:25Speaker 4: You know, I don't think he's ever going to throw
- 15:26Speaker 4: for 5,000 yards. I don't think they ever run that
- 15:28Speaker 4: kind of offense. But he pulled off some miracles in
- 15:30Speaker 4: games last year. I'm trying not to be a bearish guy.
- 15:32Speaker 3: So did Bo Nix. Bo Nix pulled off even more
- 15:33Speaker 3: than he did. And he stinks right now.
- 15:35Speaker 4: He stinks right now. Caleb Williams is based off injury.
- 15:38Speaker 4: He hasn't had stinking games yet. Since he came back
- 15:41Speaker 4: this year, the first game, 59 points. It wasn't all
- 15:43Speaker 4: on him.
- 15:43Speaker 3: He didn't do anything.
- 15:45Speaker 4: I was about to say that. He wasn't 59 points
- 15:49Speaker 4: because of Caleb Williams. And then he had the stinker
- 15:51Speaker 4: in the rain. But I would say, though, he's earned
- 15:54Speaker 4: enough credibility to be where you believe in him. You
- 15:57Speaker 4: can't picture him being a bust. Again, Jayden Daniels, the
- 16:00Speaker 4: only reason he is maybe entering some type of bust
- 16:03Speaker 4: zone is because of injury. But it doesn't feel like
- 16:06Speaker 4: he's getting his magic back.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing. Guys like Bo Nix did not develop.
- 16:11Speaker 2: He should have taken a jump this year. He did
- 16:13Speaker 2: not do it. Jaden Daniels has not developed since his
- 16:16Speaker 2: rookie year. So I think that we're used to quarterbacks
- 16:19Speaker 2: going on a trajectory up, and it's been up and
- 16:21Speaker 2: down for some reason. Drake May looked like he was
- 16:24Speaker 2: taking a major step back.
- 16:25Speaker 4: All right. We're going to wait until the offseason, but
- 16:26Speaker 4: we will in February, after the Super Bowl, redraft the
- 16:30Speaker 4: 2024 draft.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Then we'll see.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Then we'll see. Then we'll see.
- 16:33Speaker 2: All right.
- 16:34Speaker 4: We have a 2024 team playoff coming. It's inevitable. It's
- 16:38Speaker 4: just dotting the I's and putting the ink together. Even
- 16:41Speaker 4: if the fans don't want it, it's coming. I've seen
- 16:43Speaker 4: some polls where about 75% of college football or sports
- 16:47Speaker 4: fans do not want a 2024 team playoff. They don't
- 16:50Speaker 4: care what you think because they know you're going to
- 16:52Speaker 4: watch no matter what. It's like having a restaurant in
- 16:54Speaker 4: a small town and you change the menu. We only
- 16:57Speaker 4: have one restaurant in this town. Where else are you
- 16:59Speaker 4: going to eat? The good part is The good part
- 17:02Speaker 4: is there will be more relevant football games played in December.
- 17:05Speaker 4: The Pool and Weed Eater Bowl, the Bad Boy Gasparilla Bowl.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Oh, why are you calling those bowls out?
- 17:09Speaker 4: No offense. I love those bowls. But there will be
- 17:11Speaker 4: more relevant games played in December. Now, the negative part
- 17:15Speaker 4: is those first-round playoff games, there will be teams in
- 17:18Speaker 4: those games who have no business battling for a national title.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Like Iowa last year was 8-4. They would have made
- 17:24Speaker 4: the playoffs. They were not going to win a national title.
- 17:27Speaker 4: There's teams like that. So if you want to comp it,
- 17:29Speaker 4: it's really like the 64-team playoff in college basketball, and
- 17:33Speaker 4: that's their model. 24 teams, yeah. Are there teams that
- 17:37Speaker 4: are being feel-good stories early in the tournament that have
- 17:39Speaker 4: no chance of doing it? Yes, just like the 64-team
- 17:42Speaker 4: playoff in college basketball, which was a goldmine, which is
- 17:46Speaker 4: a billion-dollar goldmine, the 64-team tournament. March Madness, it worked.
- 17:50Speaker 4: They will risk de-emphasizing the regular season to over-emphasize the playoffs,
- 17:55Speaker 4: and that's what's happening. It's going to happen in 2027.
- 17:56Speaker 4: So here's the issue, though. The big question is scheduling.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Will teams on their own volition schedule up or schedule down?
- 18:04Speaker 4: If you're a good team, if you're Georgia, your first
- 18:07Speaker 4: four games of the season, are you going to schedule
- 18:09Speaker 4: Wofford or are you going to schedule Texas? Are you
- 18:11Speaker 4: going to schedule Oregon? I'm not sure because I can
- 18:14Speaker 4: go play Wofford and get an easy 70-3 win and
- 18:18Speaker 4: just pile up wins and ensure myself a home playoff game.
- 18:21Speaker 4: If I play Texas, if I play Notre Dame, now
- 18:24Speaker 4: I'm not doing so. Hopefully they schedule up.
- 18:26Speaker 2: We'll see. You know, I kind of like it from
- 18:28Speaker 2: competitive reasons. Because last year, Notre Dame did not get in.
- 18:31Speaker 2: They were 13th, presumably. they easily could have gotten to
- 18:35Speaker 2: the title game. They could have won the national title.
- 18:37Speaker 3: We do not know.
- 18:38Speaker 2: In the NIL era and with inbound scheduling, I don't
- 18:41Speaker 2: think we know who the top teams are. I looked
- 18:43Speaker 2: at last year's 12-team playoff, and there were at least
- 18:45Speaker 2: seven or eight teams who were not as good as
- 18:47Speaker 2: some of the teams that.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Were out there. That's fair.
- 18:48Speaker 2: So I just think because people play no one now,
- 18:51Speaker 2: you have no idea who the 12 teams are.
- 18:53Speaker 3: I think it's kind of a crapshoot.
- 18:55Speaker 2: And the fact that Notre Dame could have won it
- 18:57Speaker 2: all last year and didn't make the playoff, Competitively, okay,
- 19:00Speaker 2: 24 seems a little rich because your Iowa really got
- 19:03Speaker 2: to me.
- 19:03Speaker 3: I'm like, I don't want to see Iowa.
- 19:04Speaker 4: And we're pro-Iowa, but last year Iowa wasn't winning the
- 19:06Speaker 4: national title.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Yeah, but you've got to get Notre Dame in. Two
- 19:08Speaker 2: years ago, I thought Miami with Cam Ward could have
- 19:10Speaker 2: been interesting. So you could probably go 16 might be
- 19:13Speaker 2: better competitively.
- 19:14Speaker 4: But again, when they looked at those models of 16
- 19:17Speaker 4: versus 24, they said this much money with 16. this
- 19:20Speaker 4: much money with 24. If we're going to break open
- 19:22Speaker 4: the piggy bank, let's go all the way to 24.
- 19:24Speaker 2: No, but I do think whenever you expand playoffs, you
- 19:26Speaker 2: take away from regular season, as you said. And college
- 19:29Speaker 2: basketball's regular season is somewhat irrelevant.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Like Indiana-Ohio State this weekend will always be a very
- 19:34Speaker 4: good game, but it won't be detrimental to the losing team.
- 19:38Speaker 3: And Alabama-Georgia. You're right.
- 19:39Speaker 2: So it's a give and take. Okay, for my next one,
- 19:42Speaker 2: I'm going to the NFL. Jaden Daniels spoke to the
- 19:44Speaker 2: press yesterday and put the blame for the late-game collapse
- 19:48Speaker 2: against the Giants on himself. He said he should have
- 19:50Speaker 2: done a better job, which is the right thing to say.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Dan Quinn, by the way, probably should have said a
- 19:56Speaker 2: little more of that, too. I think everybody needs to
- 19:57Speaker 2: take responsibility in Washington. My question is, what happens to
- 20:01Speaker 2: this team moving forward? A lot of analysts compared it
- 20:04Speaker 2: to the 2024 Chicago Bears. Huh. They lost on a
- 20:08Speaker 2: Hail Mary to Jaden Daniels and Washington and went on
- 20:10Speaker 2: to lose the next 10 games. They were 4-2, and
- 20:12Speaker 2: they ended up with five wins on the season, completely collapsed.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I think everyone expects Washington to collapse after this. Felt
- 20:20Speaker 2: like the miracle of the Meadowlands for the Giants in 1978,
- 20:23Speaker 2: a franchise-changing mistake. It was one of the worst all-time
- 20:26Speaker 2: mistakes in the history of the NFL. I think we're
- 20:28Speaker 2: going to remember the end of that game. So how
- 20:30Speaker 2: do they respond? Now, they don't play until Monday night.
- 20:32Speaker 2: They're at San Francisco. Oh, no. And that looks bad.
- 20:36Speaker 2: But I got to tell you, you know what? It's
- 20:38Speaker 2: only seven half points spread. For example, the Rams are
- 20:40Speaker 2: two touchdown favorites over the Cardinals. There is a chance
- 20:44Speaker 2: that Jaden Daniels and the commanders actually do use this
- 20:47Speaker 2: as motivation. I would not totally rule them out. I
- 20:50Speaker 2: don't think they're going to collapse like the Bears because
- 20:52Speaker 2: they have some talent. And I think Jaden Daniels is
- 20:55Speaker 2: thoroughly embarrassed by this. And I think Dan Quinn's embarrassed.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I think everyone's embarrassed. I actually think they might put
- 21:01Speaker 2: out a good effort. They still might get killed by
- 21:02Speaker 2: San Francisco because that's a really good team. But I
- 21:05Speaker 2: think that Washington does not totally fold the tents. I
- 21:07Speaker 2: don't think they're a great team, but I'm going to
- 21:10Speaker 2: say seven or eight wins on the season.
- 21:12Speaker 4: Monday night, national TV, this is always a judgment game.
- 21:15Speaker 4: If they lay an egg and everyone has to talk
- 21:17Speaker 4: about it the next day, it furthers that topic. It's like, yep,
- 21:21Speaker 4: they are who we thought they were. Dennis Green, this
- 21:23Speaker 4: day in history.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:24Speaker 4: I would say it's a good point because if this collapses,
- 21:26Speaker 4: Dan Quinn gets fired, the bigger picture is financially and contract-wise,
- 21:30Speaker 4: what do they do with Jay Daniels? This is post-year three.
- 21:34Speaker 4: This is the year franchise quarterbacks are supposed to get
- 21:36Speaker 4: their big deal like Joe Burrow did, like Patrick Mahomes did.
- 21:40Speaker 4: But they will have to push that back here. They'll
- 21:41Speaker 4: kick the can like C.J. Stroud.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it gets back to that 24 class.
- 21:44Speaker 2: We just don't know how these guys are developing. But
- 21:47Speaker 2: Dan Quinn is probably coaching for his job as well.
- 21:50Speaker 2: So if you're going to bring in a new coach,
- 21:52Speaker 2: it's a new coach like Jaden Daniels. Are you bringing
- 21:54Speaker 2: in a new GM? There's a lot to be determined.
- 21:57Speaker 4: All right, one more warm take for me. And this
- 21:58Speaker 4: is just a quickie because this is going back to
- 22:00Speaker 4: the Brewers. If I'm the Brewers and I'm the Brewers fans,
- 22:03Speaker 4: I don't want a week off. I don't want rest.
- 22:05Speaker 4: If I'm a Brewers player, I wish we could run
- 22:07Speaker 4: it back tonight. You could play whoever's in the AL.
- 22:10Speaker 4: I know you hear the analysts say, you know, it
- 22:12Speaker 4: would be great for the Brewers' bullpen if they had
- 22:14Speaker 4: seven days off. When you have momentum like this, I
- 22:16Speaker 4: don't think a baseball player would want the day off.
- 22:18Speaker 4: In the regular season, you're jonesing for a day off.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Now you have momentum. So now all their bullpen and
- 22:25Speaker 4: now the Miz has to sit how many days? 13
- 22:28Speaker 4: days since he last pitched, last started? I think that's
- 22:31Speaker 4: terrible for a starting pitcher. And I think what's going
- 22:33Speaker 4: to happen here is when the Brewers get back, I
- 22:35Speaker 4: think they're going to win the World Series. I believe
- 22:37Speaker 4: they're going to win the World Series. But my guess
- 22:38Speaker 4: is they lose game one to whoever they play in
- 22:40Speaker 4: game one. And then they win the next four in
- 22:42Speaker 4: a row. Because if I'm the Brewers again, you have
- 22:45Speaker 4: all this momentum. Let's keep playing. Let's just keep going.
- 22:47Speaker 4: It's not like Thelma and Louise. Let's keep going over
- 22:49Speaker 4: the cliff. Let's keep going in a more positive way.
- 22:51Speaker 2: So do you do one of those simulated games that
- 22:53Speaker 2: a lot of teams are starting to do now where
- 22:54Speaker 2: you pretend that you're playing?
- 22:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I would do some type of simulated games to
- 22:58Speaker 4: do something. But the other thing is, if I'm a
- 23:00Speaker 4: Brewers fan... I got my feet up this weekend. I'm
- 23:02Speaker 4: watching some football. But then the churning in the stomach
- 23:04Speaker 4: starts again late next week.
- 23:05Speaker 3: I actually worry about this a little bit.
- 23:07Speaker 2: If it's the Guardians who are leading the ALCS right now,
- 23:10Speaker 2: I just think 99% of people are going to pick
- 23:12Speaker 2: the Brewers, and that has to make you scared.
- 23:15Speaker 3: You're right, like stomach churning.
- 23:16Speaker 2: But even nationally, I don't want to pick the Brewers
- 23:18Speaker 2: because no one on earth is going to give Cleveland
- 23:20Speaker 2: a chance.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Maybe Tampa.
- 23:22Speaker 4: It's going too well. All right, coming up after the break.
- 23:25Speaker 4: Nicole Auerbach of NBC Sports with us to talk about
- 23:28Speaker 4: the 2014 playoff and the huge college football weekend. Stick around.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Pass and pearl off. Not so fast. Yeah, I want
- 23:36Speaker 4: to play tomorrow on the Brewers. Let's play somebody. Let's
- 23:42Speaker 4: keep going. You like the Thelma and Louise reference?
- 23:44Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely.
- 23:45Speaker 4: But more positive than driving off the cliff.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's
- 23:50Speaker 2: Paul Paps. Paul, it's a really big college football weekend.
- 23:53Speaker 2: So many interesting matchups. It's a great time to talk
- 23:56Speaker 2: to Nicole Auerbach, of course, NBC Sports Big Ten Insider
- 24:00Speaker 2: and host of the Rushing the Field podcast with our
- 24:03Speaker 2: buddy Joshua Perry.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Nicole, how are you doing?
- 24:06Speaker 7: Doing great. Can't wait for these games either.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so you've covered Indiana pretty closely this year. Why
- 24:12Speaker 2: does it feel like Ohio State is the team to
- 24:15Speaker 2: beat even though they're playing the national champions?
- 24:18Speaker 7: It always felt like Ohio State's the team to beat.
- 24:21Speaker 8: So many of the narratives coming into this game feel
- 24:23Speaker 8: really similar to the way that they did when Indiana
- 24:26Speaker 8: played Ohio State in the Big Ten title game last year,
- 24:28Speaker 8: where it's like, okay, Indiana's a great story. They look
- 24:31Speaker 8: pretty good. They look like maybe they got some weaknesses.
- 24:34Speaker 8: Now let's see them against an elite roster. Let's see
- 24:37Speaker 8: them against Jeremiah Smith. And then they, of course, beat
- 24:40Speaker 8: them last year and they go on and they beat
- 24:42Speaker 8: a bunch of other good teams and win a national title.
- 24:44Speaker 7: So it feels sort of similar.
- 24:46Speaker 8: Just with the questions with the quarterback this year, the
- 24:49Speaker 8: defense that's gotten gashed a couple of times where they're
- 24:52Speaker 8: going to have to go through a team like Ohio
- 24:53Speaker 8: State to really gain that respect, be considered a national
- 24:56Speaker 8: title contender again. Or otherwise, like maybe it's just, you know,
- 24:59Speaker 8: a team that's going to make the playoff, but not
- 25:01Speaker 8: necessarily be there late January.
- 25:03Speaker 4: You know, we've been talking about this on Not So Fast.
- 25:05Speaker 4: We have this theory that like. Indiana, they still have
- 25:07Speaker 4: to fight their historical perception. And it's like, this was
- 25:10Speaker 4: a great story. It was like a guy landing on
- 25:12Speaker 4: the moon. He's not going to go back to the moon.
- 25:15Speaker 4: And so Indiana has to beat Ohio State. What do
- 25:17Speaker 4: you think of Josh Hoover this season? Is he a
- 25:19Speaker 4: legit Heisman candidate?
- 25:21Speaker 8: Well, first of all, I completely agree. It felt that
- 25:23Speaker 8: way after the first year when they made it to
- 25:25Speaker 8: the playoff and everyone just said, oh, it's because they
- 25:27Speaker 8: had a friendly schedule. And then last year they beat everybody.
- 25:31Speaker 7: They win it all.
- 25:31Speaker 8: And then this year everyone's like, well, it was maybe
- 25:33Speaker 8: it was just Fernando and maybe it was just these
- 25:35Speaker 8: JMU transfers. So I think that, you know, Josh Hoover
- 25:39Speaker 8: has done a really good job. The big questions for
- 25:41Speaker 8: him coming into the year were about turnovers and that,
- 25:45Speaker 8: you know, hey, he's got this potential, but he also
- 25:46Speaker 8: makes a lot of mistakes. TCU hasn't thrown an interception yet.
- 25:50Speaker 8: We typically watch quarterbacks get better, get more comfortable in
- 25:54Speaker 8: this system as the year goes on.
- 25:56Speaker 7: So, no, he's not Fernando Mendoza. He's not as big.
- 25:59Speaker 8: Uh, he's different kind of runner, but he's got great
- 26:01Speaker 8: weapons in the past game. They, the run game has
- 26:04Speaker 8: had some, some, uh, injuries and some health issues, but it,
- 26:08Speaker 8: you know, he's going to have that at his disposal
- 26:10Speaker 8: as well. So this will be a big test for
- 26:13Speaker 8: him against Matt Patricia's defense. Um, and we'll learn a lot,
- 26:16Speaker 8: but it's okay that he's not Fernando Mendoza. He's still
- 26:19Speaker 8: been pretty good. And he typically gets better. The more
- 26:22Speaker 8: you are in this offense.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Okay, there's another former James Madison coach out there, of course.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Bob Chesney is the hot coach, I would say. Saturday night, UCLA, Wisconsin.
- 26:33Speaker 2: I don't think we had any idea that this would
- 26:35Speaker 2: be such an important matchup, Nicole. But how seriously should
- 26:40Speaker 2: we take UCLA as a potential contender?
- 26:43Speaker 7: I think we should take them very seriously.
- 26:44Speaker 8: We saw what they did to Oregon. We were just
- 26:47Speaker 8: talking about these teams. Like, hey, are you a great story?
- 26:49Speaker 8: Are you the type of team that can beat a
- 26:51Speaker 8: roster that's a lot more talented than you? That's exactly
- 26:54Speaker 8: what UCLA did with Oregon. And so you look at
- 26:57Speaker 8: their schedule, their potential path to the college football.
- 26:59Speaker 7: Playoff, it's there for them. Bob Chesney is a great coach.
- 27:03Speaker 8: You know, I talked to the athletic director at JMU
- 27:06Speaker 8: that hired Cignetti and Chesney back-to-back, and he walked me
- 27:09Speaker 8: through the different similarities, obviously the different personalities. But the
- 27:12Speaker 8: way that they won at low levels and things that
- 27:14Speaker 8: were replicable that we're now seeing at places like UCLA.
- 27:18Speaker 8: I was there in August for preseason camp and the
- 27:21Speaker 8: vibes were so good there. You know, they knew what
- 27:24Speaker 8: they had in Wayne Knight because they brought him with them.
- 27:27Speaker 8: Of course, Nico Yamaliaba is injured and out for the
- 27:29Speaker 8: foreseeable future.
- 27:30Speaker 7: So that has an impact on them.
- 27:32Speaker 8: But with such a productive, prolific, creative run game, that
- 27:37Speaker 8: should still be there.
- 27:39Speaker 4: All right, a couple of things. First of all, you
- 27:40Speaker 4: nailed the pronunciation, the UCLA quarterback. Andrew and I aren't
- 27:43Speaker 4: even going to try it. Secondly, the AD at James
- 27:46Speaker 4: Madison should get a raise, and I would like to
- 27:48Speaker 4: work for him because he makes people into millionaires. All right,
- 27:50Speaker 4: next up, Notre Dame-BYU. This feels like such an obvious
- 27:54Speaker 4: trap game that it's not a trap game, but Notre
- 27:57Speaker 4: Dame needs a challenge. What do you think of this
- 27:58Speaker 4: Notre Dame game, and do you think Notre Dame fans
- 28:00Speaker 4: should be a bit nervous about BYU?
- 28:04Speaker 8: I think you can be helpfully nervous. I mean, it's
- 28:06Speaker 8: a really tough place to play. It's one of the
- 28:09Speaker 8: great backdrops for college football. I'm really excited that it'll
- 28:13Speaker 8: have game day and all the pomp and circumstance. And
- 28:16Speaker 8: this is a really good physical defense. We're used to
- 28:19Speaker 8: seeing that from BYU. But Notre Dame's schedule allowed it
- 28:23Speaker 8: to really ramp up.
- 28:24Speaker 7: And even this game, it allows.
- 28:25Speaker 8: Them to ramp up then to Miami in a couple
- 28:28Speaker 8: of weeks. So they've been able to work out a
- 28:29Speaker 8: lot of the kinks. They have definitely played teams that
- 28:33Speaker 8: have that physicality at the line of scrimmage, like the
- 28:35Speaker 8: first half against Wisconsin, even Michigan State early in that
- 28:38Speaker 8: game as well. So I think they've seen that and
- 28:40Speaker 8: they have developed and figured out the run game. That
- 28:43Speaker 8: was the biggest question coming into the year after you
- 28:45Speaker 8: lose two first round running backs. And Jonas Walton has
- 28:48Speaker 8: really emerged. Two freshmen these last two games. Get him
- 28:51Speaker 8: the ball early and often. He's got that burst, that
- 28:54Speaker 8: ability like a Jeremiah Love to break out those big runs.
- 28:58Speaker 8: So that was a big question for me. Outside of that,
- 29:01Speaker 8: I trust CJ Carr to command and control this offense.
- 29:04Speaker 8: I trust Notre Dame's defense. I don't trust BYU's offense
- 29:08Speaker 8: to be explosive enough, to be reliable enough against elite
- 29:11Speaker 8: defenses because that's been their deficiency these last couple of years.
- 29:15Speaker 8: Without their best running back, I just don't see it.
- 29:18Speaker 2: So, Nicole, I saw that you wrote about the Texas Longhorns,
- 29:21Speaker 2: and you said, we are who they thought we are.
- 29:25Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Close enough.
- 29:27Speaker 3: You saw this.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Kind of loss to Oklahoma possibly coming because you dug
- 29:31Speaker 2: into the offense in numbers.
- 29:32Speaker 3: So what's wrong with the Longhorns?
- 29:34Speaker 7: Well, it's not just Arch Manning.
- 29:36Speaker 8: I mean, he certainly has not been terrific in those games.
- 29:40Speaker 8: those interceptions in the fourth quarter cost him against Oklahoma
- 29:43Speaker 8: he's been pretty good he's not been one of the
- 29:47Speaker 8: best quarterbacks in the country since he took over as
- 29:49Speaker 8: the starting quarterback at Texas But it's really the offense.
- 29:52Speaker 7: And I think that's why.
- 29:53Speaker 8: Steve Sarkisian's feeling the heat and getting questions about whether
- 29:56Speaker 8: or not he should still be the play caller. Because
- 29:58Speaker 8: this is an offense that just gets cold and goes
- 30:01Speaker 8: silent for stretches of the game. And they're leading the
- 30:04Speaker 8: SEC in three and out rate. And that matches exactly
- 30:07Speaker 8: what it's like to watch this team. You'll see a
- 30:08Speaker 8: great player, a great drive. And then nothing for a while.
- 30:12Speaker 8: And you're just wondering why it's so disjointed and why
- 30:14Speaker 8: with so much talent on the offensive side of the ball,
- 30:17Speaker 8: it doesn't click better.
- 30:18Speaker 7: It's the sequencing. It's the play calling. It's all of that.
- 30:21Speaker 8: And so until that gets fixed, until we see this
- 30:24Speaker 8: offense fully elevate, I'm just not sure that this is
- 30:27Speaker 8: a team that we're going to see deep into the postseason.
- 30:30Speaker 7: The talent's there. On paper, they should be.
- 30:32Speaker 8: But I really think it's like the entire offense needs
- 30:36Speaker 8: a reboot.
- 30:36Speaker 4: All right, Nicole, we are on the cusp of a
- 30:38Speaker 4: 24-team playoff. I want you to fast forward for the
- 30:42Speaker 4: college football fan. When this happens, what will the landscape
- 30:47Speaker 4: of college football look like, feel like when it does happen?
- 30:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:51Speaker 8: I mean, I think the biggest impact will be on
- 30:53Speaker 8: which games feel the most pressing in the course of
- 30:57Speaker 8: the season, because that's the biggest difference from four to 12.
- 31:00Speaker 8: It was, you know, you felt like you had to
- 31:01Speaker 8: be perfect. And if you dropped one game, you had
- 31:04Speaker 8: to like make up for it in the 14 era,
- 31:06Speaker 8: but really people were trying to be perfect. In a
- 31:10Speaker 8: 2014 playoff, it's going to be down the line a
- 31:12Speaker 8: little bit, right? It's going to be about an Iowa-Nebraska
- 31:16Speaker 8: game with teams that have a couple of losses. They're
- 31:19Speaker 8: going to be the ones playing around that cut line,
- 31:21Speaker 8: for example, if that's what we're going to be looking at.
- 31:25Speaker 8: You know, you're still going to have people jockeying for
- 31:28Speaker 8: seating for buys and things like that. But really, like
- 31:31Speaker 8: the games that are make or break that we're going
- 31:33Speaker 8: to be talking about, about the so-called bubble, they're just
- 31:35Speaker 8: going to be a little bit lower into the rankings
- 31:38Speaker 8: and into the conferences, because that's a big part of
- 31:41Speaker 8: why we're headed to the 2014 playoff. These conferences are huge.
- 31:44Speaker 8: They need more spot for their teams to have more.
- 31:48Speaker 8: to have a successful season. If everyone is living in
- 31:50Speaker 8: a world that's play off our buck. So basically just
- 31:53Speaker 8: the meaningful games will go a little bit further down
- 31:56Speaker 8: and we'll all have a similar reaction when we're watching
- 31:58Speaker 8: an Alabama Georgia game, just like we did this past week.
- 32:01Speaker 7: Where you're like, okay, both teams are probably in the playoffs.
- 32:04Speaker 7: Like it still matters to win.
- 32:06Speaker 8: But, you know, it's not as cutthroat or, you know,
- 32:10Speaker 8: you've got to be perfect the way that college football
- 32:12Speaker 8: was for most of our lives. And that part will
- 32:15Speaker 8: follow and end up with more games that feel that
- 32:18Speaker 8: way where you're like, I don't know.
- 32:19Speaker 7: If the stakes are as great as they used to be.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think insiders are going to be awfully
- 32:23Speaker 2: busy deep into January, including you.
- 32:25Speaker 3: Nicole, thank you so much for the time.
- 32:28Speaker 7: Anytime, guys. Enjoy the games.
- 32:29Speaker 4: That was great to preview the weekend. But the 2014 playoff,
- 32:32Speaker 4: the one thing, I knew it was inevitable. It's going
- 32:35Speaker 4: to happen. It's happening. There's too much money to be
- 32:38Speaker 4: left on the table by not doing it. The one thing,
- 32:41Speaker 4: when they do, as we get to a 2014 playoff,
- 32:44Speaker 4: I need one thing, a central scheduling office for all
- 32:47Speaker 4: of college football. More so than ever, you're going to
- 32:50Speaker 4: need to build weekends. Like the NFL builds weekends, you're
- 32:53Speaker 4: going to need a master scheduling office to work with colleges,
- 32:56Speaker 4: and the networks to build more great matchups.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Well, now I think teams will be unafraid to schedule
- 33:01Speaker 2: anybody because you get two or three losses.
- 33:04Speaker 3: I think this is going to open up the schedule.
- 33:05Speaker 4: It should. It should have teams go more out-of-conference big boys.
- 33:09Speaker 4: You can make more money on ticket sales, TV sales.
- 33:12Speaker 4: But then if you're a team like, let's say you're
- 33:14Speaker 4: North Carolina, do you want to schedule a couple cupcakes
- 33:17Speaker 4: to get yourself four wins before you get in the schedule?
- 33:19Speaker 4: And can we pull this off? Or do you schedule harder?
- 33:22Speaker 4: I don't know what effect it will have.
- 33:23Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, it's going to be a
- 33:25Speaker 2: wild scene, but it's going to work because everything they're
- 33:27Speaker 2: doing in college football is absolutely working. Obviously, you and
- 33:30Speaker 2: I are watching.
- 33:30Speaker 3: All right, coming up next, we're going to do the
- 33:31Speaker 3: clip joint.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Got a great one from the Dan Patrick show on
- 33:34Speaker 2: this coming weekend in the NFL.
- 33:36Speaker 3: It's a lot of fun.
- 33:37Speaker 2: That's next. Not so fast. Wow.
- 33:41Speaker 3: 24 teams.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Let's go. Yeah.
- 33:43Speaker 4: Hoosiers home game. We got to go to a Hoosiers
- 33:44Speaker 4: home game. Put that on the list.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Ah, yeah.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Bloomington's killing it.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Every week on Not So Fast, we do the Pub
- 33:50Speaker 3: and Grub of the Week.
- 33:51Speaker 2: This week, the big game, Ohio State and Indiana.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Paul, you're a Midwestern guy. What do you got?
- 33:56Speaker 4: Bloomington, Indiana. Been there a bunch. We got a lot
- 33:58Speaker 4: of recommendations. I have a few of my own. Everyone
- 34:00Speaker 4: knows Nick's English Hut. When you're there, get the Stromboli Pearl.
- 34:03Speaker 4: You're a big Stromboli guy.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Back in the day. I love Stromboli.
- 34:06Speaker 4: Upstairs Pub. Check that out before and during and after
- 34:08Speaker 4: the game. Crazy Horse, I'm told, has a huge beer selection.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:12Speaker 4: Here's the bonus tip from Not So Fast. Pork tenderloin
- 34:16Speaker 4: sandwiches in Central Indiana are They're huge. They're like manhole covers.
- 34:19Speaker 4: They're gigantic. There's a place down 446 south of town,
- 34:24Speaker 4: The Cabin. Go to The Cabin to get the best
- 34:27Speaker 4: pork tenderloin sandwiches.
- 34:28Speaker 2: It's debatable.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Find out.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Can't wait. Help me grab the week.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Brighter future this season, Seattle or Denver? I think it's Denver, honestly.
- 34:42Speaker 9: As much as I love Seattle's defense, I think the
- 34:44Speaker 9: ceiling on Denver's offense is higher. Seattle's offense, I think
- 34:48Speaker 9: the truth about Sam Darnold is this is kind of
- 34:51Speaker 9: what he was for much of last year, but they
- 34:55Speaker 9: were opportune in the times that they played. He showed
- 34:58Speaker 9: up big in important moments once or twice throughout the
- 35:00Speaker 9: course of the season, but for most of last season,
- 35:02Speaker 9: he was a similar player. I think it's harder for
- 35:05Speaker 9: me to imagine them doing that again than it is
- 35:07Speaker 9: for me to imagine the Broncos figuring it out, especially
- 35:10Speaker 9: given that they were down Sertan, Hufanga, and Riley Moss
- 35:14Speaker 9: didn't even play for much of that game.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Pabst and Perloff. This is
- 35:20Speaker 4: the clip joint. That's Dominic Foxworth agreeing with you that
- 35:22Speaker 4: Denver has more coming up than the Seahawks do.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. Denver went through the hard part of their schedule.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Now it gets way easier the rest of the way.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Let me devil's advocate. The Seahawks never get any coverage,
- 35:32Speaker 4: even after winning the Super Bowl, never get any love.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Sam Darnold is always fighting for relevancy even after winning
- 35:38Speaker 4: the Super Bowl, and he was a big part of it.
- 35:40Speaker 4: Is there any chance he has a couple bad games,
- 35:42Speaker 4: they get Jadarian Price back, the defense steps up, Because
- 35:45Speaker 4: they were great last year. They weren't good. They were great.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Well, I think they're worn out. I think they're injury.
- 35:50Speaker 2: I mean, their bad decision came in March. They never
- 35:54Speaker 2: should have let Kenneth Walker go back, go in the
- 35:56Speaker 2: free agency to Kansas City. And they paid Rashid Shahid,
- 35:59Speaker 2: who is great, and then he has a drop and
- 36:01Speaker 2: a fumble. So you never know. That was really where
- 36:04Speaker 2: I think they cost themselves. They don't have a run game,
- 36:07Speaker 2: and I don't trust Jadarian Price. I don't trust Zach
- 36:09Speaker 2: Charbonnet and Kenneth Walker. I don't even know if we
- 36:11Speaker 2: want to stay there. But whatever money he wanted... I
- 36:14Speaker 2: think they.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Should have paid up. I think that's where the problem started.
- 36:17Speaker 4: All right, let's stick with the injury topic. And Caleb
- 36:19Speaker 4: Williams had the hamstring injury about three or four weeks ago,
- 36:22Speaker 4: and he finally talked to the press, the local press
- 36:25Speaker 4: in Chicago, and here's how that went.
- 36:27Speaker 6: Caleb, what would you say was the injury?
- 36:29Speaker 4: What would you tell us was the injury? It was
- 36:31Speaker 4: a hamstring tear and a pretty serious one.
- 36:34Speaker 6: Did they give you a grade?
- 36:35Speaker 4: Yeah, we got a grade, but I wouldn't say it's
- 36:39Speaker 4: deserved to be put out there after all the false ones, so.
- 36:43Speaker 4: Why keep the details of the injury secret? Because it's
- 36:46Speaker 4: not deserving.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Why?
- 36:48Speaker 9: Just not deserving.
- 36:49Speaker 4: Next question. You take exception to get it wrong. It doesn't.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Next question.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 36:55Speaker 4: Next question.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Remember when I sprained my knee skiing?
- 37:01Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, of course.
- 37:02Speaker 2: So my doctor said a sprain is just a small tear.
- 37:05Speaker 2: So maybe he's cementing his way into this. He obviously
- 37:09Speaker 2: didn't tear through the hamstring in half, but I think
- 37:12Speaker 2: he was awfully defensive there, Paul.
- 37:13Speaker 3: What do you have to say for your guy here?
- 37:15Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, so I think there's some layers to this.
- 37:17Speaker 4: So when he gets hurt, everyone saw he's on the ground,
- 37:20Speaker 4: he's rolling, he's screaming. He gets on the cart, and
- 37:23Speaker 4: they say you're not supposed to use the cart unless
- 37:25Speaker 4: you really need it. He's got the towel over his head.
- 37:27Speaker 4: Within hours, maybe the next morning, it came out that
- 37:30Speaker 4: he'd be week to week with a hamstring strain. I
- 37:33Speaker 4: think the average fan out there, the average football fan,
- 37:35Speaker 4: This thing, strain is no big deal. Tear is like,
- 37:37Speaker 4: oh my gosh. While they might be similar, that's where
- 37:41Speaker 4: all the criticism came from.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Well, I think when you hear tear, you mean tearing
- 37:44Speaker 2: off the bone or tearing in half.
- 37:46Speaker 3: That is definitely not what happened.
- 37:48Speaker 4: So I think Caleb Williams got a little defensive here,
- 37:51Speaker 4: but this has probably been building up for four weeks
- 37:53Speaker 4: in that you're going to make fun of me for
- 37:54Speaker 4: getting upset and getting all choked up when I had
- 37:57Speaker 4: a hamstring tear. Maybe for him, this was a really
- 37:59Speaker 4: bad injury. I don't think he should have gone this
- 38:02Speaker 4: way at the press conference. He should have blown it off.
- 38:04Speaker 4: But he was clearly bothered by it.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Can I make a confession?
- 38:07Speaker 2: I heard this on the Dan Patrick show today, but
- 38:09Speaker 2: I didn't see the video until now. I'm going to
- 38:12Speaker 2: defend Caleb. He wasn't making that big a deal about it.
- 38:15Speaker 4: He was nonchalant, but he kept going back and back.
- 38:18Speaker 4: He could have easily said... It's a grade three hamstring strain,
- 38:22Speaker 4: and because of that, it's a tear. He could have
- 38:25Speaker 4: gave details. He's allowed to give details about his self
- 38:28Speaker 4: and his health.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but do we put too much of a microscope
- 38:31Speaker 2: on Caleb Williams sometimes? I think he gets a lot
- 38:33Speaker 2: of criticism.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Well, he's polarizing.
- 38:34Speaker 4: People either like him or are sick of fans for him,
- 38:37Speaker 4: or they think he's a crybaby or soft. or Mama's Boy,
- 38:40Speaker 4: and all the things that were said of him going
- 38:42Speaker 4: to USC. There doesn't seem to be a lot of
- 38:44Speaker 4: middle ground.
- 38:44Speaker 2: I think they really need him back. You've been pointing
- 38:47Speaker 2: out Tyson Bajan keeps turning the ball over.
- 38:49Speaker 3: That is not what you want.
- 38:51Speaker 4: There are other better quarterbacks clearly in the league. I
- 38:53Speaker 4: don't think there's a team that suffers more than without
- 38:55Speaker 4: him because he keeps you in games. He's not the
- 38:58Speaker 4: best quarterback in the first three quarters, definitely not. But
- 39:00Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter, he can pull things out and
- 39:03Speaker 4: make an average defense that the Bears have look pretty decent.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Absolutely. Okay, we also had John Marossi on to talk
- 39:09Speaker 2: baseball today. with Dan, and he talked about the future
- 39:12Speaker 2: of Otani and the possibilities of Otani pitching.
- 39:15Speaker 5: The honest truth, Dan, is that no one had done
- 39:19Speaker 5: what Otani had done for as long as he had
- 39:22Speaker 5: done it. He did it longer than the Bambino had
- 39:24Speaker 5: done it. Let's be honest about that. He was doing
- 39:26Speaker 5: things no one's ever done. And what we can certainly
- 39:29Speaker 5: say is that no one entering his mid-30s has ever
- 39:33Speaker 5: done what Shohei is still trying to do.
- 39:37Speaker 4: John Marossi from MLB Network is saying that there should
- 39:40Speaker 4: be a conversation with Otani's future as a hitter and
- 39:43Speaker 4: a pitcher. Look, Otani was 8-2 this year. That's nice.
- 39:46Speaker 4: He won a few games last year. We mentioned yesterday
- 39:49Speaker 4: on the show when I gave my warm take that
- 39:50Speaker 4: she'd give up pitching. I don't think Otani's going to.
- 39:54Speaker 4: He believes himself at a level that most people don't.
- 39:56Speaker 4: He thinks of himself different than the average ball player.
- 39:59Speaker 4: I don't really think that the Dodgers can contractually tell
- 40:02Speaker 4: him to stop pitching. Now, you could take him out
- 40:04Speaker 4: of the lineup, but I don't think that's going to
- 40:06Speaker 4: go well. Who knows if there's any outs in his contract,
- 40:09Speaker 4: but that could be offensive to him.
- 40:11Speaker 2: John also said that one of the big questions is
- 40:13Speaker 2: what's the deal with his health? Is it his knee?
- 40:17Speaker 2: No one's talking about it. Will he have surgery this offseason?
- 40:19Speaker 2: If you have knee surgery, then you are not pitching
- 40:22Speaker 2: next year. So that might determine it in itself.
- 40:24Speaker 4: And you know what's fascinating? That his injury the year
- 40:27Speaker 4: he had 55 homers or whatever and 50-plus stolen bases,
- 40:30Speaker 4: it was an arm injury. It was an elbow injury,
- 40:32Speaker 4: but they did a procedure with it. And he was
- 40:34Speaker 4: able to hit just fine. Now he's got a knee injury,
- 40:36Speaker 4: which he probably got doing not necessarily pitching, but hitting,
- 40:39Speaker 4: and that's the one that's bothering him.
- 40:40Speaker 2: You know, Albert Pujols declined. I think that's one player
- 40:44Speaker 2: that's comparable to Otani. Completely dominated offense, and in his
- 40:46Speaker 2: mid-30s fell off. I wonder, I mean, I don't even
- 40:50Speaker 2: care if he pitches like that anymore. He's got to
- 40:53Speaker 2: return to what he is as a hitter. And physically,
- 40:55Speaker 2: I'm not so sure he can do it.
- 40:56Speaker 4: Yeah, he already got the money for being a pitcher
- 40:58Speaker 4: and a hitter. It's guaranteed and deferred. So it's not
- 41:01Speaker 4: like they can renegotiate if he just hits.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Well, listen, I think that was also, he's buried bonds.
- 41:06Speaker 2: I think there was money was also for it.
- 41:08Speaker 4: It was $ 700 million no matter what.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think they were like, well, if you
- 41:11Speaker 2: get us a few innings, we're saving on a starter.
- 41:13Speaker 3: But they will need another starter.
- 41:15Speaker 2: So does that mean because if Otani's not pitching, then
- 41:17Speaker 2: they have to pay Scooble?
- 41:19Speaker 3: The Dodgers are a bit.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Of a mess.
- 41:20Speaker 4: A bit of a mess. Weirdly in a mess. All right,
- 41:22Speaker 4: let's get to getting the Heisman. Get you ready for
- 41:24Speaker 4: the college football weekend. Who is going to make a
- 41:27Speaker 4: statement Heisman-wise this weekend? Oh, I look gorgeous there. Throwing
- 41:31Speaker 4: out the Heisman. All right, you and I agree this
- 41:33Speaker 4: is Josh Hoover's weekend to go way up or way
- 41:35Speaker 4: down in the Heisman standings. Josh Hoover, there he is,
- 41:38Speaker 4: way down on the list. He filled in for Mendoza.
- 41:41Speaker 4: He's taking over for Mendoza. 17 touchdowns, zero picks, average
- 41:45Speaker 4: games as far as the opponents. This is it. Prime time.
- 41:49Speaker 4: I'm sorry. Prime national schedule. Noon, Ohio State. This is
- 41:53Speaker 4: his opportunity.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, if Jeremiah Smith has a great game,
- 41:56Speaker 2: we're going to be like, oh, of course Jeremiah Smith
- 41:58Speaker 2: had a great game. He's Jeremiah Smith, but Josh Hoover
- 42:00Speaker 2: can get the national spotlight for the first time.
- 42:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and you can go up, way up, take down
- 42:04Speaker 4: Ohio State all in the same weekend.
- 42:06Speaker 2: By the way, CJ Carr has his first real test, too.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Notre Dame, we haven't mentioned him in the Heisman discussion once.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Right, CJ Carr of Notre Dame, he hasn't had big
- 42:15Speaker 4: monster games against subplots.
- 42:16Speaker 2: He hasn't had any games.
- 42:17Speaker 4: No, he's playing nice football against average opponents, and that
- 42:20Speaker 4: won't get you the Heisman.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Well, I think this BYU game is his first real game.
- 42:24Speaker 2: He's got two games on the schedule, BYU and Miami.
- 42:26Speaker 4: Right.
- 42:27Speaker 2: So I think if Notre Dame blows out BYU or
- 42:29Speaker 2: wins convincingly, C.J. Carr might be the guy we're talking about.
- 42:32Speaker 4: All right, coming up next, constructive criticism and maybe some
- 42:35Speaker 4: friendly bets between you and I for the NFL and
- 42:38Speaker 4: college football weekend. Stick around. Not so fast.
- 42:40Speaker 2: I feel like we've been a Josh Hoover show this week.
- 42:44Speaker 2: A lot of Josh Hoover.
- 42:45Speaker 4: Well, I mean, he's not getting the coverage.
- 42:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:48Speaker 4: Now he's got to come through. We went to bat
- 42:50Speaker 4: for him.
- 42:50Speaker 3: He's got to come through.
- 42:51Speaker 4: Josh, you have to come through.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Watch the Ohio.
- 42:54Speaker 3: Welcome back to Not So Fast, Perloff and Paps.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Now, Sunday Night Football is at Lambeau this week as
- 42:58Speaker 2: the Cowboys and Packers renew their rivalry in primetime. It's
- 43:02Speaker 2: Sunday Night Football live on NBC and Peacock. Paul, thank
- 43:06Speaker 2: God I am reading this promo because I don't know
- 43:08Speaker 2: if people were going to tune in for this bad boy.
- 43:10Speaker 4: Yeah, who would see this game coming? This is fantastic.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Nice ink on Dak there on the promo.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Yeah, this will obviously be whatever the last Cowboys game was.
- 43:18Speaker 2: This will be the highest rated game of the season.
- 43:21Speaker 2: And for my Monday's headline today.
- 43:23Speaker 4: Let's call it.
- 43:24Speaker 3: I am going with.
- 43:25Speaker 2: This game, but I'm actually going with the Cowboys. Now,
- 43:29Speaker 2: I think the Cowboys defense is a major problem. I
- 43:32Speaker 2: think that's a headline on Monday morning because obviously Green
- 43:34Speaker 2: Bay looked amazing last week against Chicago on both sides
- 43:37Speaker 2: of the ball. But the Cowboys cannot stop the run.
- 43:40Speaker 2: The Packers have not been running the ball without Josh Jacobs,
- 43:42Speaker 2: but I think they get it going. So the Packers
- 43:45Speaker 2: have to hold on the ball because on the other
- 43:46Speaker 2: side of the ball, the Cowboys offense has been amazing.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Just last week against Tampa Bay, they never got a
- 43:51Speaker 2: hold of the ball because the defense will never get
- 43:53Speaker 2: off the field.
- 43:54Speaker 3: So this is going to be an interesting battle.
- 43:56Speaker 2: I think that Christian Watson and Jordan Love are the
- 43:58Speaker 2: story here.
- 43:59Speaker 3: Dallas can't stop anyone, Paul.
- 44:01Speaker 4: But if Dallas loses to Green Bay, they're still probably
- 44:03Speaker 4: the lead. It's not my lead, but it.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Could still be the lead. Yeah, definitely.
- 44:06Speaker 2: But I think the Packers are also kind of a
- 44:09Speaker 2: glitzy team. This Packers coming back, and then Micah Parsons
- 44:12Speaker 2: will be back in a week or two, hopefully. I mean,
- 44:14Speaker 2: we actually haven't heard anything concrete. I think the Packers
- 44:17Speaker 2: get a lot of buzz.
- 44:18Speaker 4: Okay, so my Monday's lead as of now, I'm going
- 44:20Speaker 4: to go with the Chiefs. If the Chiefs can somehow
- 44:23Speaker 4: be undefeated, And it's kind of a mishmash NFL weekend
- 44:26Speaker 4: the Chiefs are going to get their due. Patrick Mahomes
- 44:28Speaker 4: carved some people up. He's taking on the Chargers. Chargers
- 44:30Speaker 4: don't look very good. If this is a nice blowout win,
- 44:33Speaker 4: I think it's going to be, oh, a little reminder,
- 44:35Speaker 4: don't forget about Mahomes. Everything's working well, even though they've
- 44:38Speaker 4: got injuries at the wide receiver position. They're right back
- 44:41Speaker 4: in the.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Thick of things.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Yeah, we almost forgot about them because of the bye. Right.
- 44:44Speaker 4: A little quiet week.
- 44:45Speaker 3: I was surprised, too.
- 44:46Speaker 2: They're not the favorite in the AFC.
- 44:47Speaker 3: There's a couple teams. The Bills are pretty far ahead
- 44:50Speaker 3: of them in the odds.
- 44:50Speaker 4: All right, let's keep it friendly here, Pearl. Great week
- 44:53Speaker 4: on Not So Fast. Good job to the entire crew.
- 44:55Speaker 4: Let's put a little money on some things. We actually
- 44:57Speaker 4: bet $ 20 a game.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 44:59Speaker 4: Texans versus Jags. Shockingly, in London, Jags are giving two
- 45:02Speaker 4: and a half. Basically, it's a home game for the Jags.
- 45:05Speaker 3: Well, yeah, except that last week, remember, all the fans
- 45:07Speaker 3: were rooting for the Eagles.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Why is that?
- 45:10Speaker 3: Well, Eagles fans travel, and I don't know about Jags fans.
- 45:14Speaker 2: This feels like the Texans and Jags either play on
- 45:17Speaker 2: Thursday night, back in the day, or Sunday morning.
- 45:19Speaker 4: I don't want to besmirch anybody, and you know Eagles
- 45:21Speaker 4: fans better than I do. I don't think the properness
- 45:23Speaker 4: of London matches the Eagles fans' decor and demeanor.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Well, they seem to love it.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence had to go to a silent count in London,
- 45:30Speaker 2: which afterwards he said, I thought you guys liked us.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Apparently not.
- 45:33Speaker 2: I'm so curious about this game. He's a Marvin Harrison.
- 45:35Speaker 3: Does he play? Does he make an impact?
- 45:37Speaker 2: But I really like the Jags as a team overall.
- 45:41Speaker 2: I think the Texans are going to be a house
- 45:43Speaker 2: on fire because they're so desperate.
- 45:44Speaker 3: I'm picking the Texans.
- 45:46Speaker 4: Okay, I'll take the Jaguars, and I would give more points.
- 45:48Speaker 4: I think they're going to handle them by a touchdown.
- 45:50Speaker 4: Let's go Ravens giving three and a half at the Browns.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Lamar Jackson?
- 45:55Speaker 3: They said there's a real chance he's going to play.
- 45:57Speaker 2: I think this line is sort of in between. Now,
- 46:00Speaker 2: the Browns are at home, and the Browns looked really
- 46:03Speaker 2: bad last week, and I think everybody sort of gave
- 46:06Speaker 2: up on them. There was a little buzz about Deshaun Watson.
- 46:08Speaker 2: You know how the AFC North is, Paul, though.
- 46:10Speaker 4: You're going to take the Browns, aren't you?
- 46:11Speaker 3: I'm definitely taking the Browns.
- 46:12Speaker 4: I'll take the Ravens with whoever's at quarterback. Ohio State,
- 46:15Speaker 4: number four, giving three and a half at the Hoosiers.
- 46:19Speaker 2: I watched a couple halves of Indiana football this year.
- 46:23Speaker 2: That is not the same team as last year. It's
- 46:25Speaker 2: not just Fernando Mendoza is gone. Other guys are gone.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Pons is gone. I like Ohio State here in a
- 46:31Speaker 2: really close game, so it's not quite big enough spread
- 46:33Speaker 2: to feel confident, but I'm still taking the Buckeyes.
- 46:35Speaker 4: I'm going to take Indiana outright just to be contrarian
- 46:38Speaker 4: and more to keep that story going. Alabama, number six,
- 46:41Speaker 4: giving seven and a half. at Tennessee, a place Alabama's
- 46:44Speaker 4: had trouble before.
- 46:45Speaker 3: This is going to be an ugly, rock-em, shock-em game.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Alabama, they didn't really get their offense going last week
- 46:52Speaker 2: against Georgia. I guess I'm going to go the tie,
- 46:55Speaker 2: but I don't feel great. I don't know the SEC
- 46:57Speaker 2: right now. Florida looks great one week, then they're bad. Alabama, Tennessee,
- 47:01Speaker 2: they're very unpredictable.
- 47:02Speaker 4: I think it's an important game for the quarterback at Alabama,
- 47:04Speaker 4: Keelan Russell. He was okay last week. That was a
- 47:06Speaker 4: game they could have pulled off against Georgia. I think
- 47:08Speaker 4: they're really frustrated they didn't take down Georgia last week.
- 47:11Speaker 4: when they had the chance, and they're going to win
- 47:12Speaker 4: by seven points plus against Tennessee.
- 47:15Speaker 2: All right.
- 47:15Speaker 3: We'll see. That's an interesting coaching matchup, too.
- 47:17Speaker 2: I like Tennessee to at least show up a little
- 47:21Speaker 2: bit at home. All right.
- 47:22Speaker 4: Before we wrap up for the week, it's time for
- 47:23Speaker 4: constructive criticism. Your feedback on social media to what we've
- 47:27Speaker 4: been saying, doing, and wearing. Here we go, Pearl. First one.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Oh.
- 47:33Speaker 4: Your post about Josh Hooper.
- 47:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:35Speaker 4: From B Porter. Let's see how he does against real competition.
- 47:38Speaker 4: If he does well this weekend, then hail praise. Otherwise...
- 47:41Speaker 4: He has been efficient against lesser competition. I'd argue, but
- 47:44Speaker 4: the guy's right. He's been playing great football, numbers-wise, against
- 47:49Speaker 4: average opponents.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Well, yeah, but Northwestern seems to be pretty salty on defense.
- 47:53Speaker 3: I don't know how.
- 47:54Speaker 2: I'm not sure how, if they were bad. Nebraska was
- 47:56Speaker 2: at home. I see what you're saying. I really have
- 47:59Speaker 2: no idea. You know Josh Hoover started out number three
- 48:02Speaker 2: in Heisman odds this year? Everyone thought he was going
- 48:03Speaker 2: to be great, and then he fell back.
- 48:06Speaker 4: But you want to fall back. You want to fall
- 48:07Speaker 4: back and then recover at the end. Of course, everyone knows.
- 48:10Speaker 4: All right, one more constructive criticism. No team will return
- 48:13Speaker 4: to throwbacks permanently. That's me yesterday about throwbacks. Drew Butler,
- 48:17Speaker 4: our boy, said, if I were commissioner, every NFL team
- 48:19Speaker 4: would wear throwbacks Thanksgiving weekend. I'm down with that. One-stop shopping,
- 48:25Speaker 4: Thanksgiving weekend, throwbacks. You're with the family. You're hanging with
- 48:29Speaker 4: your old uncle who's had a few too many, your dad.
- 48:32Speaker 4: I like this idea.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Good idea. Don't the Cowboys sort of wear throwbacks all
- 48:36Speaker 3: the time?
- 48:36Speaker 2: Is there that much of a difference between the modern
- 48:38Speaker 2: Cowboys uniform and the old Cowboys uniform?
- 48:40Speaker 4: Not that much. Not that much. It's time for the
- 48:42Speaker 4: feel-good pearl. Listen to this one and soak it in.
- 48:48Speaker 4: Lined into the gap and left center.
- 48:49Speaker 3: Churrio back.
- 48:50Speaker 2: He makes the catch. The Brewers win the pennant.
- 48:55Speaker 3: Oh, my God. The Brewers win the pennant.
- 49:00Speaker 5: The World Series will go through Wisconsin.
- 49:05Speaker 4: That is a great call, and he's referencing Bob Uecker
- 49:07Speaker 4: from Major League there.
- 49:09Speaker 3: Unbelievable.
- 49:11Speaker 2: It feels that Uecker, of course, that team was Cleveland.
- 49:13Speaker 2: It wouldn't be funny if it was Cleveland against Milwaukee
- 49:16Speaker 2: in the World Series. All Uecker.
- 49:18Speaker 4: Anywhere to get Uecker in. staff at Not So Fast.
- 49:21Speaker 4: Thank you for watching. Tune in next week.
- 49:23Speaker 6: We're done.
- 49:23Speaker 4: Enjoy the football.
