Jess: Welcome back to The Pixie Garden Hair Podcast. I'm Jess, here with licensed cosmetologist Delena Markland. Delena, this question is a little embarrassing for people, which is exactly why they search it instead of asking. Why does my hair smell right after I wash it?
• 0:37
Delena: Because the wash never got to the scalp, and that is why the first thing I hand these clients is the DETOX scalp scrub. Here is what nobody tells you: the smell is not on your hair. Hair is dead protein, it does not make an odor by itself. The odor is on the scalp surface, where oil and sweat and product sit and feed the bacteria that live there. You can shampoo the length of your hair beautifully and never touch the actual problem.

Jess: So a regular shampoo just skips the scalp?
• 1:05
Delena: For most people, yes. Watch how someone washes their hair. They lather the top, they run it through the ends, they rinse. The scalp gets whatever drips down. And if there is any buildup up there, and after over 25 years I can tell you there almost always is, a light lather slides right over it. The scrub is different. It has physical exfoliants in it, plus charcoal to pull the oil out and tea tree and peppermint, and you work it in with your fingertips at the scalp for a full minute. That is the wash the scalp has been waiting for.

Jess: Okay, but a lot of people go the other direction. They think smell means dirty, so they grab the strongest clarifying shampoo they can find and use it every day.
• 1:50
Delena: And that makes it worse, which sounds backwards, so let me explain it the way I explain it in my chair. Your scalp is skin. When skin gets stripped and dry, it overproduces oil to protect itself, the same way your face gets oilier when you over-wash it. So a harsh clarifying shampoo every day dries the scalp out, the scalp panics and pumps out more oil, and more oil means more food for the bacteria. Now you smell by lunch instead of by dinner. Clarifying is a reset. You use it once, you get back to zero, and then you go back to a gentle routine.
• 2:24
Jess: How often is the scrub, then, if clarifying is just a reset?
• 2:29
Delena: Every seven to ten days. That is the number I give everyone. In between, you wash daily or every other day with something gentle. I like a sulfate-free shampoo, and we carry a rice water shampoo bar with tea tree and mint that is a good everyday match for someone dealing with this. What you do not do is stretch it. I hear people say they are training their scalp to go a week between washes. Your scalp does not train. It just gets oilier and smellier while you wait.
• 2:58
Jess: What about dry shampoo? That's the tool a lot of people are reaching for when they notice the smell.
• 3:04
Delena: Dry shampoo is great for exactly one thing, which is buying yourself one more day. It absorbs oil, it does not clean anything. If you use it for one day between washes, wonderful, ours is the only one I recommend. If you use it for four days in a row, you now have four days of oil plus four layers of powder sitting on the scalp, and that is a smell factory. And if you have gone past a week like that, the fix is the scrub and then shampoo twice on that first wash. The first lather is loosening it, the second one is actually cleaning.
• 3:39
Jess: Is there a way to tell whether it's a buildup problem or something else?
• 3:43
Delena: Yes, and this is the part I want people to actually hear. Buildup smell is oily, a little sour, and it clears completely after a proper scrub and wash. If the smell is persistent no matter what you do, if it is yeasty, if it comes with flaking that is greasy and yellow, or with sore spots, that is not a product problem. That is a scalp condition and you need a dermatologist, not a scrub. I will sell you the scrub for the first kind. I will send you to a doctor for the second kind.
• 4:12
Jess: Anything else in the routine that people miss?
• 4:15
Delena: Two things. First, rinse longer than you think you need to. Most people rinse for fifteen seconds. Give it a full minute, because leftover shampoo and conditioner on the scalp is buildup too. Second, your pillowcase and your hairbrush. If you clean your scalp and then put your head on a pillowcase that has a week of oil on it, or run a brush through that is full of old product, you just put it right back. Wash the pillowcase, clean the brush weekly.
• 4:44
Jess: And the one-sentence version for someone who's just going to do one thing?
• 4:48
Delena: Scrub the scalp every seven to ten days, wash gently in between, and stop stripping it. Your scalp is not dirty. It is being skipped.
• 4:56
Jess: Where do people get the scrub?
• 4:58
Delena: thepixiegarden.com. The DETOX scalp scrub, the rice water shampoo bar, and the dry shampoo are all there, and they are what I actually use on this problem.

Jess: All linked on this episode's page with the full written guide. See you Monday.
