Transcript
- 0:00More content is not going to fix your community.
- 0:03When I talk to membership founders that are like, hey, my community is not engaged, they're not, they're not logging in, they're not doing the work, they're canceling, they're leaving, whatever.
- 0:12A lot of the times they're thinking like, what else do I need to add?
- 0:15We're always thinking like, I need to add more value.
- 0:18It's not valuable enough.
- 0:19But adding more is rarely ever the solution.
- 0:24We are not hurting for content when we can have it at our fingertips with AI, with scrolling, any platform, finding a ton of resources for free on YouTube probably, if you have a community, you even have a lot
- 0:37of free content that people could go through.
- 0:39People don't pay for access to lots of content anymore.
- 0:43They definitely used to, but they don't these days.
- 0:45They're paying for curation, they're paying for the giant red jump button to their goal, they're paying for the roadmap and to help them get there.
- 0:54They're paying for access, they're paying for connection, they're paying for a lot of other things.
- 0:58Right?
- 0:59Content creates an overwhelm problem, which is the number one reason that people leave communities.
- 1:05So in our business at Affinity, we review a lot of exit surveys and why did you cancel?
- 1:10Feedback for our clients.
- 1:12And a very common answer we see is there's so much here.
- 1:15I just can't utilize everything.
- 1:17There's so much and I just, I'm not getting to it.
- 1:20There's so much.
- 1:20I can never catch up to these kind of things, which is basically your members saying there's way too much here.
- 1:26I don't even know what's for me.
- 1:27I can't find things.
- 1:29I don't know whether or not I should watch this video or that video or go to this event or go to that event.
- 1:35Like, I'm totally overwhelmed and so I just can't be bothered.
- 1:38Right?
- 1:40So this is a very, very common problem, especially for long term existing memberships where there's so much content to go through.
- 1:47I recently was doing a strategy for, for the Design Better podcast and they have so, so much content.
- 1:54But they also have these incredible micro tools that they give their members that helps them with deciding like or like basically helps them create a curated list of content that they should check out.
- 2:07And it's not a huge list.
- 2:09It's like, here's the five things that you should dive into based on what you shared with us.
- 2:13And they built this, you know, using AI.
- 2:15It's like a sort of like Micro product that's very customized based on all of their content data.
- 2:21Super impactful for any long standing communities that have a ton of content and a huge backlog.
- 2:27Okay, so what else can you do about this besides create this like custom product which we could totally help you with if you want help doing something like that.
- 2:35But there's a few things that you can do.
- 2:37You can first of all make it really clear that they don't have to use everything to be successful.
- 2:41Set expectations up front that hit, hey, there's a lot here.
- 2:44If I were you, I would just start with X, Y and Z.
- 2:47You can show them actual examples of members and how they engage in the membership and show that they're not using everything to set the expectation that they're not expected to use everything.
- 2:57You can build a roadmap for your members.
- 3:00And even better, you can build more than one roadmap and really personalize it.
- 3:04Give your members content in a specific order based on their goals.
- 3:08And that is so much more helpful than overwhelming libraries of 10 plus courses to sift through.
- 3:13Like we want to really get them access to the thing that's going to make the most impact for them in that moment.
- 3:20We want them to feel like, oh, this is exactly what I need.
- 3:22This was designed for me.
- 3:24And in order to do that we need personalization.
- 3:27And then you can get rid of stuff like simplify, simplify, simplify.
- 3:30One of the things that we do, especially on our migration projects, but also when we're reviewing content or auditing an existing community experience, is we look at where are the opportunities to simplify.
- 3:42What resources are your members barely touching?
- 3:45I remember when I was studying user experience design, there's this strategy called information architecture design where you have all of the different content.
- 3:56Like let's say you're designing the architecture for a content library.
- 3:59So you have all of the stuff and you start to put it into categories.
- 4:03Think about a deck of cards on the table where each card is a piece of your content and you start to group, put it in different groups.
- 4:11And there's this strategy where you can actually have, let's say 10 of your members do this exercise and like organize content in a way that makes sense to them.
- 4:21And so it's not just then you start to look at the patterns like, well, how did everybody organize this?
- 4:25What did, what were some of the themes that came up?
- 4:27And you might notice that the way your members think about your content is totally different than the way you think about your content.
- 4:34And so understanding their brains, understanding how they want to consume information can really help you with how you might start to categorize things differently Right now.
- 4:44When it comes to content, the name of the game is personalization and curation and really getting people to the right stuff at the right time.
- 4:52Custom roadmaps, personalizing it.
- 4:55Okay, but what's also working the best right now is just creating experiences.
- 5:00Creating experiences that people go through together to figure out things together, live virtual events, live in person events.
- 5:09This kind of stuff is really driving engagement with communities right now.
- 5:13It's why people are joining.
- 5:14It creates a lot of urgency.
- 5:16Having a giant content library just isn't the flex that it used to be.
- 5:21And so if you have one of those because you've been around the block and you've been building your community for a long time, it might be time to revisit how you can look at simplifying things.
- 5:32And I want that for you.
- 5:33Like, and also it's really hard to do this for yourself.
- 5:37And so we are here if you want an audit of your content content.
