- 1:12Guy with today's episode Patent leather Bag Again. Well, I'm twenty foot five
- 1:36in my stocking you five nine hundred and two in a triple Z Rapiday,
- 1:44The Big Guy. NBC resented The Big Guy in the final story of the
- 2:00current series of Adventures of a Very Unusual Detective Joshua Sharp. Joshua Sharp works
- 2:07for his clients on a strickly cash basis to provide for the needs of his
- 2:10nearest and dearest josh Junior and his daughter Debby. To these two, Sharp
- 2:15is both father and mother to his clients. He is a good detective to
- 2:20Josh and Debby. He's the friendly magician, the fabulous hero, the giant
- 2:24among giants, the Big Guy. Tonight's Adventure with the Big Guy, the
- 2:31Case of the patent leather Bag. One thing I've always emphasized to my kids
- 2:40has been the importance of keeping their word. If you can't keep a promise,
- 2:46don't make a promise, I've always told him. But once you've given
- 2:50your word, be bound by it, keep it no matter what. I
- 2:53didn't expect Josh and Debby, at their age to latch onto it too thoroughly.
- 2:59My idea is to plant the seed by a repetition, so it would
- 3:01take root and flower at some later days. Certainly I was unprepared that morning
- 3:07at breakfast when I suddenly noticed the enormous black eye that had blossomed on my
- 3:13son and the air. Now it's all right, daddy, Josh, we're
- 3:16in the world. Did you get that there's nothing to worry about? Maybe
- 3:20not for you and met Debby, but it's Josh's eyes. Well, I
- 3:23put a little piece of beef steak on a shiner like that deserves a pound
- 3:27of beef steak? Who gave it to your son? A kid? What
- 3:31kid? Just a kid? Now tell the truth, Josh, is that
- 3:36hard little tubby deck Tubby? Then stick out teeth and press. Oh the
- 3:42druggist spoy. Yeah, the druggist spoil. He just wants up to Josh,
- 3:46I was watching bloody and he hit him in the eye. Just get
- 3:50that. But I see, well, son, Well, what how does
- 3:58Tubby look? Never did look very good to me? No, I you
- 4:03know what I mean? No, I don't. What did you do to
- 4:08him? Nothing? Huh? I didn't do anything too? You mean you
- 4:15let another kid paste you like that and get away with it? Yeah?
- 4:17Why, Josh, I'm surprised at you. You are, of course I
- 4:24am. Did you expect me to be anything else? Yes, sir,
- 4:29I did. Well. What you remember, Gaddie? Remember what last week?
- 4:33Missus Tyler called up because Josh punched Willie Tyler in the nose and she
- 4:38sweatened to tell the police office. Yes, I remember that. And you
- 4:42made Josh promise not to have any more fights with anybody else. Oh,
- 4:46under no circumstances you said, I did make you promise, that didn't I,
- 4:51Josh mean you didn't remember. Oh, of course, sure I remember.
- 4:57So that's why you didn't. Well, I'm proud of your son,
- 5:03I'm very proud of you. But I was also late to work, so
- 5:17I kissed my two goodbye and hurried down the steps. I made a mental
- 5:21note that I must reopen the subject of fights and make a clear distinction between
- 5:26unprovoked aggression and justify self defense. I was just hurrying along the second floor
- 5:31corridor. I remember when I looked up and saw Missus Jessop standing in her
- 5:35open door, looking at me with a worried frown. Missus Jessop was a
- 5:40widow and our landlady, and I stopped short at that look on her face
- 5:44and asked her if there were something I could do for She answered my question
- 5:48with a question, why don't you just return at mister Shaw, I'm not
- 5:53the one to make trouble. What's that, Missus jessep, Well, there's
- 5:56no point making mountains out of mole hills. I always say, all right,
- 6:00don't quite understand It's all right, mister Shap. Kids will be kids.
- 6:03I guess we've all done worst things ourselves. If we could remember back,
- 6:08worst things, worse things than what. Now, don't get yourself all
- 6:12over wrought, mister Shop, wasn't worth a lot. Just an old pattent
- 6:15leather handbag. Pattent leather handbag, just John really wouldn't be seen dead carrying
- 6:19it around. But well, that's not it to know. It's the principle
- 6:24of the Do I understand you're trying to say my children stole a handbag?
- 6:30Well, I don't like to say. Still, I hope you're prepared to
- 6:32say more than that, Missus Jesseph. Now that was just as much my
- 6:35fault as it was theirs. They play up and down these steps all day,
- 6:40and I should have known enough not to go out and leave my door
- 6:42open. Listen, missus jessep. You can lead your door open anytime you
- 6:46please, day and night. Josh and Debbie would never walk into your apartment.
- 6:49Well, I know you believe that, and it's a credit to you,
- 6:51mister Shop. But well the fact remains that they did. You mean
- 6:56you accuse my kids. I love accusing anybody. You needn't be a trade
- 7:00of lawsuits, lady, that's not the point at all. I don't think
- 7:02in terms of libel and slander. It's understandable that a person can make an
- 7:05innocence mistake. I'm not making a mistake, innocence or otherwise, and I
- 7:11want detailed, cold, detailed, with no more face saving hypocrisies. All
- 7:15right, then you can have them, mister Shop. I left the house
- 7:19yesterday afternoon at three o'clock. There was nobody here, not a soul anywhere
- 7:24on any of the floors except those two kids of yours, and they were
- 7:28playing here in this hall. Go on, well the last of five I
- 7:31got back and the hen bag was gone? So so how much more do
- 7:36you want? That's your case against my kids with I don't expect the father
- 7:42to believe bad things about his child. I wouldn't believe bad things about a
- 7:46three time loser on evidence like that. I tell you there wasn't another soul
- 7:49in the heart, but there wasn't. What about the janitors? Hanky wasn't
- 7:54here? It was his sister's birthday and he had the afternoon off. Besides,
- 7:59he knew nothing about the handbag. You mean. Josh and Debbie did,
- 8:03yes, the shop. They saw me take it out of the sideboard
- 8:05draw one day last week when I gave them a nickel for sweeping up the
- 8:09sidewalk. There was money in the bag, oh very little, how much?
- 8:13No? Oh five five one dollar bill, But that's not the point
- 8:18of the shop. There were some very valuable papers in side, wrapped in
- 8:22a rubber band. And if they'll just return them, if they touched anything
- 8:28that usual will have it back in the next minute and a half. But
- 8:31I'll stake my life. They know nothing about it. Naturally they may say
- 8:35so that if they do, I want it understood that they'll be telling the
- 8:37truth, and I'll believe them. And what's more, missus jessup, so
- 8:43will you. Even as I ran back upstairs, I realized I was being
- 8:54completely unfair. If the kids had been alone in the house and the handbag
- 9:00had been stolen, the woman could be forgiven for thinking Josh and Debby had
- 9:03something to do with the theft. On the other hand, I knew my
- 9:07kids. Somebody must have come in and taken the bag, and the kids
- 9:11probably had seen them. Likely enough, I told myself, they'll be able
- 9:15to clear the situation up. Immediately I opened the door and saw the children
- 9:20sitting on the floor playing a quiet game of checkers. Back Daddy, Yeah,
- 9:28say, oh, no, I'm fine, baby, And why didn't
- 9:31you go to bed? Oh? I just wanted to talk to you for
- 9:35a minute, to both of you. Daddy, Well, I want you
- 9:43to understand that Daddy knows. I mean, I don't think for a moment.
- 9:52Son, Yes, daddy, baby, which one? Daddy? Have
- 9:58have you ever ever, at any time gone into Missus Jessop's apartment? Well,
- 10:05yes, yes we are. Why would you do a thing like that?
- 10:09She convited us there once we swept the sidewalks did she gave us the
- 10:13nickels for? Oh you don't understand, baby, I mean, have you
- 10:18ever gone in when she's not at home? No, no, we haven't.
- 10:22I see yesterday afternoon at three o'clock it seemed she went out for a
- 10:26while. We know, we saw. We were down there in the hall
- 10:30for what we were just playing in front of her door? Well how long
- 10:35did you play in front of her door? As we did? So?
- 10:39Fine? Anyhow, almost that's right. It was just about five when we
- 10:43went out and the sigewalk and tubby punched me in the eye. Then you
- 10:48must have seen him or her? Who the person who entered Missus Jessop's place
- 10:54at some time between three and five. Oh, we didn't see you,
- 11:00so did we, Judge. No, we didn't see anybody. Not possible
- 11:07because somebody I don't know who, but somebody was in her apartment, Debby.
- 11:11Oh no, the words there was and if you were playing in front
- 11:16of the door they had to pass you, you must have seen them.
- 11:20But we didn't. Honey, I'm sorry, daddy, but they just wasn't
- 11:24anybody in the house accept us all afternoon. She's right, we didn't see
- 11:28a soul. Oh, this is just about enough to drive a man crazy.
- 11:35And you two didn't go into Missus Jesseph. You know you didn't so
- 11:39much as set foot inside. No, Daddy, we're telling you the truth.
- 11:41We did. Oh no, you stay right where you are. And
- 11:46if it's missus Jessop, you two go into the bedroom while I, oh,
- 11:50I got the stuff here. Your kids aught it, Yeah, hunting
- 11:54knife and a sewing kids. Who are you delivery boy from crimes Promis Choice
- 11:58store about third Avenue? You know anything about this, Debby? Yes,
- 12:05daddy, And we told mister Kross what we wanted yesterday after Norman. He
- 12:09said he probably haven't been by this morning. Yeah, that's right. So
- 12:11we got him in, so I brought him over the O d missus,
- 12:16the things are two and a half dollars a piece. What did you say?
- 12:20Two and a half dollars a piece? What's right, daddy? We've
- 12:22got the money? Yes, yes, to give it to dad. Oh
- 12:26wait a second, dudes, two dollars and a half a peace makes far.
- 12:33Where did you get this? What? Daddy? What are you doing
- 12:37with five dollars? Why? It's all daddy? Hey, what about the
- 12:45stuff? Missus? Don't bother me? Yeah, but get out of here.
- 12:48Yes, daddy, kids, kids, have I ever said no when
- 12:56you wanted anything? In reason? We didn't want anything, daddy. It
- 13:01just came away, came your way like I told you that. You didn't
- 13:09take a handbag out of Missus Jesseph's apartment. It handy, she's daddy,
- 13:15that would be stealing. By the time I had gone back down to her
- 13:30floor and faced her, I was hot unto the collar, and the words
- 13:33flew high and fetched. I'm sorry if your kids had talked to you out
- 13:37of it, but they haven't talked me out of a thing, and they
- 13:39don't have to. We'll see about that. No, look, Missus Jesseph
- 13:41I have talked to them, and you've got your answers. I'll talk to
- 13:45them myself. I advise you to lay off my kids, and I mean
- 13:48it. I refuse to be robbed and do nothing about it. Okay,
- 13:52then what you need is a policeman. Where are you going? No?
- 13:56No, you mustn't. You mustn't. Well, I'm going, please,
- 14:00please No, I'll leave the kids alone. I won't bother them. I'm
- 14:03sorry. I'm at the shopping late for that. Now you put him under
- 14:07a cloud and it'll take a routine investigation to get him out. Now,
- 14:09I'm miss shot. Mister s please. She has fallen at full length on
- 14:24her parlor rock, her eyes rolled back in, her arms and legs stiff
- 14:26and rigid. I knelt over her and listened for her heartbeat. I knew
- 14:31she had some kind of attack, and while I listened, her lips moved
- 14:33weakly. The words were breathy but distinct, very stale, very sale talk
- 14:50stricken as she was, she was thinking clearer than I, and finding her
- 14:54address book, I looked under the end. They're at the top. I
- 14:58read ed Mary Vale Dash John Lindsay m D with an address on Justin streeting
- 15:03the phone number. I dialed and waited a few hundred years before there was
- 15:09an answer on the other end, Doctor Maryvale speaking. This is Joshua Sharp.
- 15:13Yes, mister Sharp, I think you know a woman named Jessup,
- 15:16missus Irma Jessup jessep. Yes, she owns the house at forty six Tine
- 15:22Avenue. I don't believe I've ever heard of her. Maybe your partner,
- 15:26doctor Lindsay knows no. No, I'm glad Sherry Dust. She's heard of
- 15:30you. She's got your name in her address book, and she needs help
- 15:33fast. What's the trouble She collapsed about five minutes ago. Is she conscious,
- 15:37mister Sharp? More or less? But you won't be conscious? Wrong,
- 15:41very well. I'll be over in just a few moments. And he
- 15:50was a tall, dignified, gray haired man who took one look at the
- 15:54situation, frowned and asked to be left alone with the patients. I left
- 15:58him and walked up to my own flat to do a little thinking. I
- 16:03felt badly about the business. The woman probably had a bad taker, and
- 16:06I'd done her no good flying off the handle the way I did. I
- 16:10was just getting around the wondering why she was so afraid of the police when
- 16:17yeah, oh, I meant the phone. You're risking. Well, what
- 16:21happened? I thought you were coming to the office early. Oh, I've
- 16:23had a bad morning. Oh, anything I can do? No, I
- 16:27don't think so risky. Take a chance and well, I'm interested in finding
- 16:34a black patent leather handbag. What it was stolen from the apartment of my
- 16:38landlady, missus Irma jesup at forty six Time Avenue sometime between three and five
- 16:44yesterday afternoon? Could I ask you why you should bother your hit? I
- 16:48had already bothered. The woman has been flinging accusations. I can't say right
- 16:56now. Oh no, I'm not alone. You mean she's accusing the kids.
- 17:03You're as sharp as attack. There wasn't anybody else in the house at
- 17:07the time. Stop the second story coming in. Nothing that I can think
- 17:11of. You just hold your hat, Commander, I'll check around him on
- 17:15some times, I'm on, I shouldn't have I'll see if I can get
- 17:18a leap. I don't know how long I said for the phone, carefully
- 17:29avoiding the necessity of letting the kids know about what had developed the low before.
- 17:33There was a knock at the door. I opened it to see doctor
- 17:36Merryvale standing outside in the hall. One look at his face, and I
- 17:41stepped out and closed the door behind me. I suppose you couldn't have called
- 17:45me any sooner than you did. It wasn't soon enough. He suffered a
- 17:48sudden and severe heart attack. She's dead. Yes, you happen to know
- 17:55who's the next of kin. I have no idea. Maybe you're partner.
- 18:00Does my partner lindsay, oh, yes, of course I can ask him,
- 18:04and will you call me back? Of course. Perhaps I can leave
- 18:08the death certificate in your care if you want to, it would be convenient.
- 18:12Then I'll hear from you. I'll call you back sometime in the next
- 18:15three hours. Thanks John. Oh, if by any chance one of the
- 18:22kids answers the phone, don't let on that the ladies dead, detainely not.
- 18:26I'll break it to them myself in time. I understand, Yes,
- 18:34baby, nothing at all is that outside? Just a man, a fellow.
- 18:41I know anything. No, why should there be excuse me? Kids?
- 18:51Yeah, Commander, I I did little snoop. Well, I can't
- 18:56put my fingers on that handbag, but I got something for you. Yeah,
- 19:00where it got them? Through what am my contacts. For a few
- 19:03bucks, certain character will tell a little story about that lady at six Hibby,
- 19:11about missus Jesse. I don't quite follow, but in case you're interested
- 19:19in taking a cab to the Rutley Hotel at one hundredth Street. Guy's name
- 19:25is both and he keeps out in Rome fifty one. I took a cab
- 19:38then to the Rutley Hotel and asked for mister Bowden. I was told that
- 19:42mister Bowden wasn't in his room, and that I could wait in the dingy,
- 19:47narrow little lobby. I just sat down and was opening a newspaper when
- 19:52a voice said, quietly, yes, shop for you. It was a
- 19:56detective name shop who was coming to see I thought maybe you was him?
- 20:03Are you Mac Bowden? Than you are him? What's this highly touted story
- 20:08about Arma? Jessup? Look? Could you keep your voice down? Down?
- 20:14All right? But nobody's listening somebody night. Look, I got a
- 20:19room rent still here for one hundred and twenty Bucksmith the shop, Oh that's
- 20:25your asking price. That's the rock bottom final figure. Well, i'd have
- 20:30to get it out of the bank. It ain't three o'clock yet. What
- 20:34reason have I got to think you know anything worth that much? Though?
- 20:38Well, I spent ten years in Atlanta, pen on a robbery chute.
- 20:45How does that concern Arma Jesup. I ain't saying who it consigned for one
- 20:51hundred and twenty. I'll spend you a yarn to open your eyes. All
- 20:55right, Let's stay right here. You're coming back, yes, with the
- 21:00dough, with the money. The bullets had come blazing down from the dark
- 21:11rickety balcony that ringed the Rutley Lobby, and Bowden crashed to the unswept floor
- 21:17at my feet and died there. The killer had his exit planned so well
- 21:22that the balcony was deserted by the time I found the stairs and stumbled up
- 21:26in the half light. An hour later, I was back at forty six
- 21:34Time Avenue, ransacking Missus Jessup's belongings and finding nothing to clear the air.
- 21:41I was just settling back to take a breather when Hello, Jice, who's
- 21:49this? Doctor George Huddleston, I'd like to speak with Missus Jessics. I'm
- 21:55afraid that you can't do that. I want to find out how she's feeling.
- 22:00You can't do that. Either doctor Huddlestone. She's dead. She died
- 22:04this morning of a heart attack. If this is supposed to be humor,
- 22:08it's not funny. It isn't um it's fact. No. I have to
- 22:15have been her position for years, him rather unpleasant, nervous seas fatal habits.
- 22:22No, listen, you listen. I examined her only three days ago.
- 22:27Aha, it was as bound as yours or mine. I sat for
- 22:37some time, puzzle, reaching out for something to add up and get a
- 22:41sensible answer. Then I picked up the phone and I'll Marry Vale's office.
- 22:47The secretary answered and said he wasn't in. Perhaps I could talk to doctor
- 22:55Lindsey. Then doctor Lindsay. Oh, it's document, isn't he Merryvale's partner?
- 23:11I hung up slowly, and I took missus Jesseph's telephone list in hand
- 23:15and turned to the MS again. There it was ed Merryvale Dash John Lindsay
- 23:21MD. Studdying the names closely, it suddenly hit me if Maryvale and Lindsay
- 23:26had been partners, she would have listed them as m d's. Here plainly
- 23:30written was MD, singular without a ness. And I knew that for one
- 23:36reason or another Maryvale and Lindsay were two names for the same man. I
- 23:41thought back over the morning, Missus Jesseph's wild concern for an old handbag,
- 23:45her death, Maryvale's diagnosis, and bowden sudden murder, And then I remembered
- 23:51Bowden's hint about having been in the penitentiary at Atlanta. So I phoned Captain
- 23:55Murphy at Homoside to do a bit of research. When I had hung up,
- 24:00I climbed the stairs to where Josh and Debbie were still quietly playing checkers.
- 24:06You don't have to worry dead, don't I. Baby. We told
- 24:10you the truth about the hand You didn't touch it. I don't want to
- 24:15know about the handbag anymore. No, No, I'm sure you told me
- 24:18the truth about it. But I'm also sure that for some reason or another
- 24:23you well you, you're lied to me about something else. Look, children,
- 24:30Missus Jessup is dead, and she was murdered. And a little while
- 24:36ago a man was murdered too. It wasn't a good man, but he
- 24:40was killed like a dog. I didn't understand. Nobody's too sure of anything
- 24:45yet, and I'm only sure of one point. I'm sure that you two
- 24:52did see somebody enter the latest apartment yesterday afternoon. Oh, I'll be careful,
- 24:56sweetheart. There's a lot involved here. The person you saw murdered Missus
- 25:00Jessop and the man. Do you understand, Debbie Josh? Just a minute?
- 25:10Hello? Yes? Oh yes, Captain, information from a lamp.
- 25:15Good. You've got to record on John. It seems he would put away
- 25:21in nineteen for ten years. The medical male sec Thanks Captain. Anything else
- 25:27we can do, I'll let you know later. Oh what a headache,
- 25:38Debbie Josh. Now I must know who passed you yesterday afternoon and went in
- 25:45the Missus Jesseph's apartment. You must tell me. Do you understand? You
- 25:48must do it? I tell you we're doing it as you tell us.
- 25:52Well, anyway we're doing is you told right? Well, didn't you say
- 25:59that you're worded upon? But it once you give it, you should stick
- 26:02by it, no matter what it means. Why, yes, I did.
- 26:06We didn't know. We came up the stairs and saw us and said
- 26:08he'd give us five dollars if we'd give our word, never to say.
- 26:12We saw him and we gave our words. We gave it, and now
- 26:18we've broken. Then who was the man you saw. We don't know,
- 26:27we don't I got your message, miss jar Daddy my son. It was
- 26:37it was him, Okay, Josh, And you really haven't broken your word.
- 26:40I've known it for quite a rock. What is all this, searp
- 26:42I've known that you murdered missus Jessup, doctor Mary Vale or how dare you
- 26:48say such a thing? You killed her when you sent me out of her
- 26:49flat. It was too good a chance to miss She was unconscious and all
- 26:53you had to do was not administer to her, let her die, which
- 26:57was murder, just the same as if he used an knife her gun.
- 27:00You must be insane sharp. Why should I have done a thing like that?
- 27:03Because she had proof that you've been imprisoned for malpractice years ago under your
- 27:07real name of John Lindsay. This proof is in the handbag that you stold
- 27:11yesterday from her flat, and today, with everything fitting your purposes, you'll
- 27:15let her die because you were afraid you might continue to work her little blackmail
- 27:18racket. Do I look like a man who could commit murder? Frankly no,
- 27:22But your killer instinct definitely asserted itself later today when you had to do
- 27:26away with your excelmate Mac Bowden in order to finish this whole nasty business.
- 27:32Do you think you can prove this? I know I can. Then I
- 27:34must ask you to put up your hands steady, kids, It's all right.
- 27:41Don't get scared. Nothing's going to happen. I wish you are right

- 28:02of the boys firing a bullet that went high and wild, and I jumped
- 28:04and knocked the gun from his hand, and the crisis was over. I
- 28:08left the kids alone for a few minutes. It took me to get him
- 28:11to headquarters, and then I hopped the cab back and climbed the stairs to
- 28:15our flats. The kids were looking at their new toys, the knife and
- 28:25sewing kids. They were pleased enough, but they looked a little guilty.

- 28:47promise unless we could keep it. Well, there are sometimes when you should
- 28:52break a promise. Well, that's confused, because I know you always tell
- 28:56us about how important is to keep our words, circumstances, alter cases.

- 32:12you know, and in so many ways, Joshua was sharp such a
- 32:15model in a very dedicated barrant, which makes for a very interesting character.
- 32:24I definitely wish we had more episodes of the showing that it had made it
