Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: April 16th, 1961, marked a late-run return to Dodge City
- 0:05Speaker 1: on CBS Radio's Gunsmoke, episode 471, Cooter. The broadcast revisits
- 0:13Speaker 1: a John Meston script first heard on November 27th, 1954,
- 0:17Speaker 1: with William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon and Frank Cady
- 0:21Speaker 1: among the featured players. Dylan comes back to Dodge City
- 0:26Speaker 1: after a questionable claim of self-defense involving a gunman connected
- 0:30Speaker 1: to crooked gambler Ben Sissel. As the marshal investigates Sissel's operation,
- 0:35Speaker 1: the gambler brings Cooter Smith into the situation. The case
- 0:39Speaker 1: leads through Dodge City and toward the Long Branch Saloon,
- 0:43Speaker 1: where Sissel's card table business is part of the inquiry. Now,
- 0:47Speaker 1: back to the golden age of radio.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 1:01Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:05Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:07Speaker 2: gun smoke.

- 1:26Speaker 2: Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad.
- 1:29Speaker 4: The story of.
- 1:30Speaker 2: The violence that moved west with young America. And the
- 1:34Speaker 2: story of a man who moved with it.
- 1:36Speaker 5: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:41Speaker 5: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:44Speaker 4: It's a chancy job.
- 1:46Speaker 6: And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:48Speaker 4: And a little lonely.
- 1:50Speaker 7: Gunsmoke Hey, Mr.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Dillon.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Hello, Chester. Well, how are things up at Slina, Mr.
- 2:09Speaker 6: Dillon?
- 2:10Speaker 8: Real peaceful.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Town constables, all they need. I'm not going to recommend
- 2:13Speaker 4: the government spend any money up there. Tell me about that, Chester.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Anything been happening here this past week?
- 2:20Speaker 9: Nothing much.
- 2:22Speaker 10: One fellow kindly got killed last night, but outside of.
- 2:25Speaker 9: That, it's been dull this winter.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Oh, who got killed? Oh, I don't know.
- 2:28Speaker 9: Some wandering cowboy.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Who killed him?
- 2:31Speaker 6: A man called Pate.
- 2:33Speaker 9: They tell me. He was self-defense and was done pure
- 2:35Speaker 9: and simple.
- 2:36Speaker 6: Did you see it?
- 2:37Speaker 9: Well, no, sir.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Well, who did?
- 2:40Speaker 10: Well, I believe the only man who seen the whole
- 2:42Speaker 10: thing was that gambler, Ben Sissel.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Sissel?
- 2:44Speaker 9: He's new here the last few days. Been playing car
- 2:47Speaker 9: draw at the Long Branch.
- 2:48Speaker 4: You don't seem to know a whole lot about it,
- 2:49Speaker 4: do you, Chester?
- 2:50Speaker 11: No, sir, I don't. But I was just starting to
- 2:52Speaker 11: find out when I seen you riding up the street.
- 2:54Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Uh, where were you last night, Chester?
- 2:58Speaker 12: Uh.
- 3:01Speaker 9: I wouldn't be no gentleman to tell, Mr.
- 3:03Speaker 12: Dillon.
- 3:06Speaker 4: All right, I hope you had a good time.
- 3:08Speaker 9: Oh, yes, sir, I had a fine time.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Just fine. All right, you can put my horse up
- 3:12Speaker 4: if you want. I'm going to go over to the
- 3:13Speaker 4: long branch.
- 3:14Speaker 9: Yes, sir, I'll come along when I'm through.
- 3:15Speaker 8: I'll wait for you there.
- 3:27Speaker 9: Hello, Matt.
- 3:31Speaker 12: When did you get back?
- 3:32Speaker 4: I just rode in, Kitty. Sit down.
- 3:35Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 3:36Speaker 11: How was the trip?
- 3:37Speaker 8: Pretty good.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Tell me something, Kitty. Were you here all last night?
- 3:43Speaker 12: Oh, you're thinking of the killing we had.
- 3:45Speaker 13: Yeah, I was here.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Did you see it?
- 3:48Speaker 11: Most of it.
- 3:49Speaker 12: I was standing there at the bar... Pate and Ben
- 3:52Speaker 12: Sissel and the cowboy were at a table in the back.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Chester heard that it was self-defense.
- 3:57Speaker 12: Oh, a cowboy drew first, Matt, but I don't know
- 3:59Speaker 12: that you'd call it self-defense.
- 4:01Speaker 6: Oh, why not?
- 4:02Speaker 12: He wasn't after Pate.
- 4:04Speaker 11: He was after Ben Sissel.
- 4:05Speaker 6: What?
- 4:06Speaker 12: Yeah, he wasn't even looking at Pate, Matt.
- 4:08Speaker 11: He was looking at Sissel.
- 4:10Speaker 12: Even so, when he started to draw, it was Pate
- 4:12Speaker 12: who killed him.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Pate calls that self-defense.
- 4:16Speaker 12: They claimed he thought the cowboy was drawing on him. Besides,
- 4:19Speaker 12: he said the cowboy knew Cecil, wasn't he not?
- 4:22Speaker 4: Wasn't he?
- 4:22Speaker 13: He never is.
- 4:25Speaker 4: I see. Tell me, Kitty, is this Tate always around
- 4:29Speaker 4: when Ben Cecil's dealing?
- 4:30Speaker 7: He sure is, Matt.
- 4:32Speaker 13: Always.
- 4:32Speaker 4: And he's pretty handy with a gun, is he?
- 4:34Speaker 12: Too handy for an ordinary man, Matt.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought so.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Ben Cecil's another crooked gambler using a hired gunman to protect.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Him when he's caught.
- 4:45Speaker 13: I don't know how you can prove it.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Where would I find Ben Sissel now, Kitty.
- 4:49Speaker 11: You know?
- 4:49Speaker 12: Yeah, standing at the bar over there in the long
- 4:52Speaker 12: black coat.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Oh?
- 4:53Speaker 4: Oh, good. I'll see you later.
- 4:58Speaker 7: Sure.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Ben Sissel? That's me.
- 5:02Speaker 5: My name's Dylan Sissel.
- 5:04Speaker 4: I'm the U.S. Marshal here.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Oh, I thought you were out of town.
- 5:09Speaker 4: I was.
- 5:10Speaker 6: Well, what do you want, Marshal?
- 5:13Speaker 4: Where you from, Sizzle?
- 5:14Speaker 6: Oh, all over, Marshal. You know how gamblers are. Yeah,
- 5:17Speaker 6: I know.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Where'd you gamble last? I, uh, back east.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Why? How long's Pate been working for you?
- 5:26Speaker 6: Working for me?
- 5:27Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 5:28Speaker 6: What are you trying to say, Marshal?
- 5:30Speaker 4: Well, I'll make it real simple. The way you operate
- 5:32Speaker 4: has already led to one kill in here, and I'm
- 5:34Speaker 4: not going to have any more. I didn't kill anybody, Marshal.
- 5:37Speaker 6: There are plenty of witnesses to that.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Where's Pate, Cecil?
- 5:40Speaker 6: I don't know where he is. Why should I?
- 5:42Speaker 4: I want to talk to him, and I want you
- 5:44Speaker 4: with me when I do.
- 5:45Speaker 6: You're getting kind of pushy, Marshal.
- 5:46Speaker 4: I can get a lot worse.
- 5:48Speaker 5: I suppose we go outside and wait for a friend
- 5:50Speaker 5: who's coming here to meet me, and then we'll go
- 5:51Speaker 5: talk to Pate.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Shall we get moving?
- 6:04Speaker 6: Pate's room's up here, Marshal.
- 6:06Speaker 5: I don't know if he's in. Well, if he isn't,
- 6:08Speaker 5: you'd start thinking of some place he might.
- 6:10Speaker 11: Be, so.
- 6:11Speaker 8: Sure, sure.
- 6:12Speaker 9: I wouldn't blame you for not being here, Mr.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Dillon.
- 6:14Speaker 9: This is the worst hotel in Dodge.
- 6:16Speaker 4: This the room?
- 6:17Speaker 8: This is it.
- 6:18Speaker 4: All right, knock on the door. Tell him you want
- 6:19Speaker 4: to talk to him.
- 6:21Speaker 6: Okay. Bet you're going to.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Wish I hadn't. Knock. Who's that?
- 6:31Speaker 8: It's Ben Sissel. Hello, Sissel. Who's these two?
- 6:39Speaker 6: This is Marshal Dillon, Pate.
- 6:41Speaker 8: Marshal Dillon? What's he doing here?
- 6:44Speaker 4: We'll come inside and tell you, Peyton.
- 6:46Speaker 8: Now, wait a minute, Marshal. Get out of there. Now,
- 6:52Speaker 8: you look, Marshal. If you come here over that cowboy
- 6:55Speaker 8: last night, it's no use.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Everybody saw it knows I killed him in self-defense.
- 6:59Speaker 6: Of course he did. There's plenty of witnesses to that.
- 7:01Speaker 4: You're a smart sizzle, but you're a coward. That's why
- 7:04Speaker 4: you need a hired gun to help you when you're
- 7:06Speaker 4: caught dealing crooked. You'd better watch what you're saying. Why?
- 7:10Speaker 5: I don't carry a gun, Marshal, but Peyton does.
- 7:13Speaker 6: He happens to be a good friend of mine.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Sure, but right now, Pate's gun belt is hanging on
- 7:17Speaker 4: that chair over there. You see it? You blasted fool.
- 7:21Speaker 9: Shut up!
- 7:23Speaker 4: Now, Marshal, I.
- 7:25Speaker 8: I ain't afraid of you, but you're armed and I'm not.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Chester.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Yes, sir?
- 7:28Speaker 4: Go get his gun belt.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 7:31Speaker 8: That's pretty brave of you, Marshal, arresting an unarmed man.
- 7:34Speaker 4: I'm not arresting you, Pate. I wish I could.
- 7:37Speaker 8: Then what are you doing?
- 7:38Speaker 4: Chester, unbuckle that belt and hand it to him.
- 7:40Speaker 13: Here you are.
- 7:41Speaker 4: All right. Put it on, Pate.
- 7:44Speaker 8: Put it on?
- 7:44Speaker 4: That's right.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Okay.
- 7:53Speaker 4: All right, you got your gun on now.
- 7:55Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Get out of Dodge.
- 7:57Speaker 6: What?
- 7:58Speaker 4: I said get out of Dodge right now.
- 8:02Speaker 8: I ain't done nothing, Marshal. I got no quarrel with you.
- 8:06Speaker 6: What kind of gunman are you, Paint?
- 8:09Speaker 4: Too free to him?
- 8:09Speaker 5: The kind of gunman that can be hired isn't the
- 8:11Speaker 5: kind that's going to take any real chances, Cecil.
- 8:13Speaker 8: I said I got no quarrel with you.
- 8:15Speaker 4: I don't like this.
- 8:18Speaker 8: You know, you let me out of here.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Out of Dodge.
- 8:21Speaker 8: Sure, it's no good town anyway.
- 8:24Speaker 4: The door's open.
- 8:25Speaker 8: The Marshal's right, Cecil. This job don't pay enough.
- 8:37Speaker 6: I guess you win, Marshal.
- 8:39Speaker 5: You won't find any gunman here who'll hire out to
- 8:41Speaker 5: you now, Cecil, so you might as well learn to
- 8:43Speaker 5: deal straight. Oh, I always do, Marshal.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Yeah. Come on, Chester, let's get out of here. Yes, sir.
- 8:55Speaker 9: Maybe you should have run Cecil out of Dodge, too.
- 8:57Speaker 4: I'd rather he stayed, Chester.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Maybe next time I can arrest him and see him
- 9:01Speaker 5: hung like he deserves. It didn't take Peter any longer
- 9:06Speaker 5: to leave Dodge than to find his horse and get mounted.
- 9:09Speaker 5: And for the next week, there was no trouble from
- 9:11Speaker 5: Ben Sissel. He went on dealing cards, and although everybody
- 9:15Speaker 5: was watching him pretty close, nobody found any reason to
- 9:17Speaker 5: complain about him. He didn't win much money, but I
- 9:20Speaker 5: began to think maybe he decided that being honest had
- 9:23Speaker 5: some value anyway.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Doc and I were talking about him in my office
- 9:27Speaker 4: one noon.
- 9:28Speaker 11: Yeah, a man like Ben Sissel doesn't change, Matt. He's
- 9:32Speaker 11: a crook, and he'll always be one. He's worse than
- 9:34Speaker 11: a crook. He's practically a murderer.
- 9:36Speaker 4: He's also a coward, Doc. That's why I think maybe
- 9:39Speaker 4: I got him stopped.
- 9:40Speaker 10: Well, the way I got him fixed now, in order
- 9:42Speaker 10: to stay free, he's got to stay honest.
- 9:44Speaker 11: Yeah. That must be a hard choice for a man
- 9:48Speaker 11: like that.
- 9:48Speaker 12: Mr.
- 9:48Speaker 9: Dillon? Hold on.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Justin?
- 9:52Speaker 7: Mr.
- 9:52Speaker 9: Dillon, I just seen the doggone thing out on the
- 9:55Speaker 9: street there.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Yeah, what was that?
- 9:57Speaker 10: Well, sir, who would you say is the last man
- 10:00Speaker 10: in Dodge you'd ever expect to start carrying a six-gun?
- 10:03Speaker 13: I am.
- 10:04Speaker 9: Yeah, no, no, besides of you, Doc.
- 10:06Speaker 5: I can't think of anybody except Doc who doesn't carry
- 10:09Speaker 5: a gun now, Chester.
- 10:11Speaker 9: Well, what about Cooter Smith?
- 10:13Speaker 4: Cooter Smith?
- 10:14Speaker 9: If I hadn't saw him, I wouldn't believe it neither.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Well, what's he doing with the gun?
- 10:18Speaker 9: Just leaning on a post down the street there.
- 10:20Speaker 11: He shouldn't be allowed to wear a gun, a man
- 10:22Speaker 11: like him.
- 10:23Speaker 8: No.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Tester, go bring him in here. I want to talk
- 10:25Speaker 4: to him. All right, sir.
- 10:27Speaker 9: I'll get.
- 10:29Speaker 6: Him.
- 10:29Speaker 11: Things will get mighty bad around here when even Cooter
- 10:32Speaker 11: Smith decides to arm himself, man.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Ah, Cooter's pretty harmless, Doc.
- 10:36Speaker 12: Well, you never know.
- 10:37Speaker 11: A man like that could be harmless one day and
- 10:39Speaker 11: dangerous the next.
- 10:40Speaker 4: What's the matter with Cooter anyway, Doc?
- 10:42Speaker 11: I don't know for sure. I did examine him once and...
- 10:47Speaker 11: Looked to me like he got kicked in the head
- 10:48Speaker 11: by a horse at one time. He won't say so
- 10:52Speaker 11: for some reason, but maybe he doesn't even remember.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Whatever it was, it sure made him half simple.
- 10:57Speaker 11: I've seen men worse off. Here he is, Mr.
- 11:01Speaker 6: Jones.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Hello, Cooter. Come on in. Hello, Cooter.
- 11:06Speaker 9: Hello, Doc.
- 11:08Speaker 13: Why, come here like Chester said, Marshal.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Good. I wanted to talk to you, Cooter. Well, you
- 11:14Speaker 4: never told me you'd come here before. You never wore
- 11:17Speaker 4: a gun before, Cooter.
- 11:19Speaker 6: Oh, that.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Well, that's for my job, Marshal. Your job? What job
- 11:24Speaker 4: or work I got? What kind of a job is it? Well,
- 11:27Speaker 4: I don't rightly know yet, Marshal. Well, can you tell
- 11:29Speaker 4: me what you do know, then? Like who hired you?
- 11:32Speaker 13: Well, the fellow that gave me this gun, he hired me.
- 11:36Speaker 4: For an awful lot of money, he said. And who
- 11:38Speaker 4: was that? Was it Ben something? Ben Sissel?
- 11:43Speaker 9: Yeah, that's him.
- 11:45Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 11:45Speaker 13: He's going to pay me for wearing this gun.
- 11:47Speaker 4: He is, huh? Did he tell you why?
- 11:49Speaker 9: This afternoon.
- 11:49Speaker 10: What?
- 11:50Speaker 13: Well, that's why he's going to tell me everything I
- 11:53Speaker 13: got to do. He's going to talk to me some
- 11:56Speaker 13: more this afternoon.
- 11:58Speaker 4: He sure talks a lot, that fellow. Yeah. Okay, Cooter,
- 12:03Speaker 4: you can go along now. But, uh, I hope you
- 12:06Speaker 4: don't let Sissel talk you into any trouble.
- 12:09Speaker 13: Aw, it ain't that, Marshal.
- 12:11Speaker 4: As long as he don't try to make a fool
- 12:14Speaker 4: out of me. Sometimes people do.
- 12:16Speaker 13: I don't like that.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:20Speaker 11: Sure, Cooter.
- 12:21Speaker 13: I think I'll go talk to him now and make sure.
- 12:26Speaker 11: Goodbye.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Bye, Cooter.
- 12:31Speaker 9: Well, what in the world do you make of that?
- 12:34Speaker 5: I think maybe Cecil's crazier than Cooter is, Chester. I'm
- 12:38Speaker 5: going to be at the Long.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Branch tonight to make sure. Evening, Kitty. Hello, Matt.
- 12:58Speaker 8: What are you doing around here so early tonight?
- 13:00Speaker 4: I'm looking for Ben Sissel.
- 13:02Speaker 7: Over there.
- 13:03Speaker 11: Is there trouble, Matt?
- 13:04Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Hello, Marshal.
- 13:12Speaker 6: Sissel. Cooter Smith tells me you were talking to him
- 13:16Speaker 6: this morning.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I was.
- 13:18Speaker 6: And he'll be here in a minute. You can talk
- 13:20Speaker 6: to him some more.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Fine.
- 13:22Speaker 6: Oh, I don't know, Marshal. Maybe it won't be so fine. Oh?
- 13:27Speaker 6: Cooter's not as easygoing as most people.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Seem to think.
- 13:30Speaker 6: He isn't?
- 13:31Speaker 12: No.
- 13:32Speaker 5: For example, you tie a gun on him, it kind
- 13:34Speaker 5: of changes his whole character. Makes him mean, Marshal. You'd
- 13:39Speaker 5: be surprised how mean.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess I would.
- 13:43Speaker 6: You don't believe me, huh?
- 13:45Speaker 4: I'll show you.
- 13:47Speaker 6: Cooter?
- 13:48Speaker 4: Hey, Cooter! Go ahead, Cooter.
- 13:57Speaker 6: I told him. Go ahead now. Marshal?
- 14:03Speaker 4: Yeah, Cooter? I'm going to draw on you, Marshal. I'm
- 14:06Speaker 4: going to shoot you. What? I'm going to kill you.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Now look, Cooter, you know better than that. Is this
- 14:12Speaker 4: what you've been putting into his head, Cecil?
- 14:14Speaker 8: Don't you look at him, Marshal.
- 14:16Speaker 6: You look at me.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Don't you look at him.
- 14:18Speaker 13: You just look at me.
- 14:19Speaker 4: So that's it, huh? Okay, Cooter. Go ahead.
- 14:25Speaker 6: Draw.
- 14:26Speaker 13: Well, I am.
- 14:29Speaker 4: I'm going to.
- 14:31Speaker 8: You look out, Marshal.
- 14:32Speaker 11: I sure am.
- 14:33Speaker 4: No, you're not, Cooter. You haven't got a chance. Now
- 14:35Speaker 4: watch this! Ah, Cooter, there you see. You're too slow.
- 14:40Speaker 4: I got my gun out and you haven't even touched yours. No. I...
- 14:47Speaker 4: I haven't touched mine. Your gun's pointing at me. I... Vance?
- 14:55Speaker 13: Ben.
- 14:56Speaker 4: He's not going to help you, Cooter. Yes, he is.
- 14:58Speaker 11: He is, too. It's him that's going to shoot you.
- 15:01Speaker 8: It's him.
- 15:02Speaker 4: You think so?
- 15:03Speaker 6: Ben.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Ben, he's going to kill me.
- 15:07Speaker 11: Ben, you've got to shoot him.
- 15:11Speaker 7: I can't stand that. I can't.
- 15:18Speaker 4: You poor devil. Now, Cecil, you ought to be real proud. I.
- 15:25Speaker 6: I didn't do nothing, Marshal. I wasn't going to shoot you.
- 15:29Speaker 6: I don't even carry a gun, you know that.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, but Cooter didn't know it.
- 15:33Speaker 5: You told him to make me start for my gun,
- 15:34Speaker 5: and then you'd shoot me from the side where I
- 15:36Speaker 5: couldn't see you.
- 15:37Speaker 4: You told him he'd be safe. That ain't so, Marshal.
- 15:39Speaker 4: But what you planned was to make me kill him.
- 15:41Speaker 5: It wouldn't look so good for me to kill a
- 15:42Speaker 5: man like Cooter, but if nobody had stand for that,
- 15:44Speaker 5: they'd laugh me right out of town.
- 15:45Speaker 4: That's what you were figuring on, wasn't it?
- 15:48Speaker 6: I had nothing to do with it, Marshal. I wasn't
- 15:51Speaker 6: figuring on nothing.
- 15:51Speaker 4: You're not as smart as I thought you were. When
- 15:56Speaker 4: you're leaving town, Cecil, I'm going to give you one hour.
- 16:00Speaker 4: And I hope you take longer.
- 16:03Speaker 5: But what you made me do to Cooter is going
- 16:05Speaker 5: to be a real pleasure to drag you out of town.
- 16:24Speaker 9: Sissel leave yet, Mr. Dillon?
- 16:25Speaker 4: He's still saddling up in the stable over there, Chester.
- 16:28Speaker 6: I'm going to give him about one more minute.
- 16:31Speaker 4: What did Doc say about Cooter?
- 16:32Speaker 9: Oh, Cooter's fine. Doc gave him some powders and stuff.
- 16:35Speaker 9: He's real calm now.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Where is he?
- 16:37Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 16:38Speaker 9: He left Doc's quite a little bit ago.
- 16:40Speaker 4: You explained to him what Sissel was trying to.
- 16:42Speaker 6: Do, huh?
- 16:42Speaker 11: Oh, yes, sir.
- 16:43Speaker 9: I made it real plain, like you told me.
- 16:44Speaker 4: You think he understands now?
- 16:46Speaker 9: He understands everything, Mr.
- 16:47Speaker 11: Dillon.
- 16:48Speaker 10: You know, it's funny, but like Doc said, getting scared
- 16:51Speaker 10: so bad he fainted. Seems to help Cooter think straighter,
- 16:54Speaker 10: at least about what happened.
- 16:55Speaker 9: He ain't near as fuzzy as usual.
- 16:57Speaker 6: Ah, good.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Sizzles, time's up. I'm going on that stable now and
- 17:02Speaker 4: run him out.
- 17:03Speaker 9: He won't give you no fight.
- 17:05Speaker 4: No, he won't, but I kind of wish he would.
- 17:07Speaker 9: You could have run him out of the lodge a
- 17:08Speaker 9: long time ago.
- 17:09Speaker 4: I wanted to catch him, Chester. I wanted to bring
- 17:11Speaker 4: him to try.
- 17:13Speaker 11: That's inside the stable.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Yeah, come on. What's that, Mr.
- 17:20Speaker 11: Dunn? It's Cooter.
- 17:23Speaker 9: He's killed Ben Sissel.
- 17:27Speaker 4: All right, drop the gun, Cooter. I dropped it. I
- 17:32Speaker 4: ain't gonna shoot no more, Marshal.
- 17:35Speaker 9: Shot him right in the head, Mr. Nellie.
- 17:38Speaker 5: He lied to me. He made a fool out of me.
- 17:42Speaker 5: Why did you have to kill him, Cooter? I was
- 17:43Speaker 5: running him out of dodge.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Don't you shoot me, Marshal.
- 17:46Speaker 7: I wasn't gonna shoot you.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Honest, I wasn't. I like you.
- 17:51Speaker 13: Cecil told me I wasn't doing anything bad.
- 17:54Speaker 7: I wasn't going to shoot you. Cecil was going to
- 17:55Speaker 7: shoot you.
- 17:56Speaker 11: I like you.
- 17:56Speaker 4: All right. All right, Cooter. I know that. Now just
- 17:58Speaker 4: calm down. I'm not going to hurt you.
- 18:01Speaker 13: You're pointing that gun at me.
- 18:02Speaker 4: No. Gun's back in my hole. Take a look at it.
- 18:06Speaker 6: See?
- 18:07Speaker 4: I am looking at it. And I can't stand it.
- 18:12Speaker 12: No, I.
- 18:12Speaker 6: Cooter.
- 18:13Speaker 4: Cooter!
- 18:14Speaker 9: Well, ain't you going after him?
- 18:16Speaker 4: I didn't scare him even worse. It's bad enough now.
- 18:19Speaker 9: But he killed a man.
- 18:20Speaker 6: He murdered him.
- 18:21Speaker 4: He won't run far, Chester. I'll find him when his
- 18:24Speaker 4: trial comes up. I've done enough to coot her for
- 18:28Speaker 4: one day. Well, it ain't your fault, Mr.
- 18:31Speaker 11: Diller.
- 18:31Speaker 4: No. That doesn't make me feel any better about it.
