- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs podcast. I'm
- 0:08Speaker 1: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:12Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick. After sweeping
- 0:16Speaker 1: Theis in Anaheim, the Cubs, I think we said it
- 0:23Speaker 1: on our first episode, we weren't quite sure if that
- 0:25Speaker 1: offense was back. It doesn't look like it is after
- 0:29Speaker 1: dropping the first two in San Francisco. You know, it's
- 0:34Speaker 1: not just Kyle Tucker. Kyle Tucker has had a couple
- 0:37Speaker 1: of hits in San Francisco. They've had they just haven't
- 0:41Speaker 1: come up with the big I think I think when
- 0:45Speaker 1: what day was it? Wednesday night? Uh, it was just
- 0:48Speaker 1: kind of prototypical about how things are going. Uh.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I mean the pitching didn't show up on Wednesday. Colin
- 0:54Speaker 2: Ray wasn't good. Yeah.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Those two double plays with the bases loaded, I mean
- 1:02Speaker 1: those it just felt like once that second one happened,
- 1:04Speaker 1: it was like, Okay, you can't do that twice you
- 1:09Speaker 1: big time.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, if you were asleep back home in
- 1:13Speaker 3: the Chicago area, did not watch the Cubs game in
- 1:16Speaker 3: the past the previous two nights, you did not miss much.
- 1:22Speaker 3: It was exactly as you described early in the game,
- 1:26Speaker 3: having those opportunities to kind of break the game open
- 1:34Speaker 3: or at least put Counsel in a place to where
- 1:37Speaker 3: he could manage more aggressively or differently, to not have
- 1:44Speaker 3: Reese Maguire the backup catcher pitching in the eighth inning.
- 1:47Speaker 3: That's kind of where Wednesday Night's game devolved towards. And yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 3: I mean Anaheim Angel Stadium, Tucker PCA, not just because
- 2:05Speaker 3: they won, but it was just just kind of more newsy,
- 2:09Speaker 3: the games are more interesting. Stuff was happening. Kyle Hendrick's pitching.
- 2:14Speaker 3: San Francisco's felt a little sleepier, and we're recording before
- 2:19Speaker 3: showed it at Managa Pitches on Thursday, and that was
- 2:23Speaker 3: pretty much the answer in Wednesday Night's clubhouse was like, well,
- 2:31Speaker 3: we got showed to going tomorrow. We'll see you know,
- 2:32Speaker 3: so things things could change in that regard, But also
- 2:37Speaker 3: missed opportunity as well with the Brewers losing Wednesday night,
- 2:41Speaker 3: and there aren't that many losses you can build in
- 2:46Speaker 3: if you're going to track them down.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yeah, you I mean, if you want to track them down,
- 2:52Speaker 1: you have to capitalize on every opportunity. I go back
- 2:57Speaker 1: to the Reese Maguire grants lamb on Saturday, and exactly,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I don't I don't look at I don't think momentum
- 3:06Speaker 1: is a thing or trends are a thing in baseball,
- 3:09Speaker 1: like from day to day, like you never know what
- 3:11Speaker 1: could change day to day. But but like the momentum
- 3:14Speaker 1: of a game matters. So when you when you hit
- 3:19Speaker 1: that grand slam, that makes a two to zero game
- 3:22Speaker 1: a six to zero game, and you just it feels
- 3:26Speaker 1: very different obviously, Uh, just a base hit in one
- 3:30Speaker 1: of those situations Wednesday night, just one with the bases loaded,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and the game suddenly feels differently.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Maybe Colin Ray's thinking a little differently. I did have it.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I didn't love this series just because they played a
- 3:45Speaker 1: good series against the Brewers. The Giants did and I
- 3:49Speaker 1: and when you have a player like Raphael Devers, you
- 3:52Speaker 1: just don't know when he's going to have a good series.
- 3:54Speaker 2: You just don't know.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I know he's been inconsistent this year, he hasn't been
- 3:58Speaker 1: himself this year. It doesn't seem like especially with San Francisco,
- 4:02Speaker 1: but you just know that that guy can turn it
- 4:05Speaker 1: out at any time. It's kind of like Kyle Tucker.
- 4:07Speaker 1: You can say like, oh, he's been something for a month, okay,
- 4:10Speaker 1: but then he has a weekend like you did in Anaheim.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So I just don't you know, the Giants aren't playing
- 4:18Speaker 1: great baseball overall this season.
- 4:20Speaker 2: They've disappointed.
- 4:23Speaker 1: They're just not a team like Anaheim or even this
- 4:26Speaker 1: weekend in Colorado where you can say like, they're just
- 4:29Speaker 1: not good. It's not that they're not talented, it's not
- 4:32Speaker 1: they just they haven't been playing great. There still can
- 4:35Speaker 1: be a problem, and then you can.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Talk about showda going.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But they got unless something changed, Logan Webs.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Got right, that was that was omitted. But you're right though.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I mean I walked into the Giants clubhouse on Wednesday
- 4:52Speaker 3: trying to work on a couple different things, and you
- 4:55Speaker 3: you look around and there are some really accomplished individual players.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I mean, a certain future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander,
- 5:07Speaker 3: Matt Chapman walking through the room, Willie Damas. Like obviously
- 5:11Speaker 3: Logan web pitching, you had circled this series, I feel
- 5:16Speaker 3: like a while back, and just the diverse factor of like,
- 5:19Speaker 3: if this guy goes off, is going to be really
- 5:21Speaker 3: hard to win a series on the road and it's
- 5:25Speaker 3: basically impossible when you don't get good pitching, and you know,
- 5:31Speaker 3: we're not sounding the alarm bells on Matthew Boyd yet
- 5:35Speaker 3: and Colin Ray has been way better than the Cubs
- 5:40Speaker 3: could have hoped for. But yeah, back to back nights,
- 5:45Speaker 3: the pitching was not as sharp, and when that happens,
- 5:52Speaker 3: you just don't really have a chance.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of angst among Cubs fans.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I understand it.
- 6:00Speaker 1: We were going to do a mailbag episode that'll be
- 6:02Speaker 1: up on Friday, so we'll we'll answer a lot of
- 6:06Speaker 1: your angsty questions. I think I think there are some
- 6:09Speaker 1: fair questions. I think there are some things. It's going
- 6:12Speaker 1: through these questions. It's very interesting what people think are
- 6:16Speaker 1: the problems and and what they're absolutely sure of as
- 6:22Speaker 1: far as who's been bad and who's been good. It's
- 6:24Speaker 1: just interesting what we see a Carson Kelly double play
- 6:28Speaker 1: and assume he's been terrible all the month there. But
- 6:32Speaker 1: but there are some things that I'm curious about and
- 6:34Speaker 1: I and we will address it. But I do think
- 6:37Speaker 1: Matt Shaw batting ninth is you know, how long are
- 6:40Speaker 1: we going to do that? How long is Greig Council
- 6:44Speaker 1: comfortable with that. I get it. He needs to he
- 6:49Speaker 1: needs to feel comfortable and he needs to like thrive
- 6:52Speaker 1: wherever he's hitting. But my guess is Matt Shaw is
- 6:55Speaker 1: confident enough to be moved up. We'll we'll address that
- 6:59Speaker 1: in a little bit. You know, I don't want to
- 7:02Speaker 1: take the thunder away from our mail bag episode, but
- 7:06Speaker 1: fans are up in arms right now, and it's interesting
- 7:10Speaker 1: how quickly it swings. Three games in Anaheim, we're talking
- 7:15Speaker 1: about the division again, three days later and suddenly everything's
- 7:21Speaker 1: a mess.
- 7:23Speaker 3: And you can add to that uncertainty Jamison Tyne's growing injury.
- 7:28Speaker 3: He will be going on the injured list and replaced
- 7:31Speaker 3: by Javier assad And I wrote about that in San
- 7:34Speaker 3: Francisco just because I thought it was interesting how it
- 7:38Speaker 3: was presented and how openly Tyne was talking about the playoffs,
- 7:46Speaker 3: and that essentially the quote was this is how it
- 7:50Speaker 3: was presented to me that if it were up to him,
- 7:54Speaker 3: I think he'd be starting this weekend at cors Field.
- 7:58Speaker 3: But this is someone who's had a fairly extensive injury history.
- 8:05Speaker 3: He has had a recent injury issue just this summer
- 8:10Speaker 3: that cost him almost two months more or less, and
- 8:14Speaker 3: they have a sod who is a very capable major
- 8:18Speaker 3: league starter, and to hear counsels say things like I
- 8:25Speaker 3: think he could pitch, I don't think it'll be smart
- 8:27Speaker 3: to pitch. He could probably push it, This isn't the
- 8:30Speaker 3: time to push it. And then to hear tie On
- 8:32Speaker 3: talking openly about we want to be in a good
- 8:35Speaker 3: spot for October. Things like that. You know, that doesn't
- 8:40Speaker 3: really happen that often. It doesn't certainly doesn't happen really
- 8:44Speaker 3: before this point. But it felt like, Okay, the Cubs
- 8:50Speaker 3: have just under thirty games here, they know what's in
- 8:54Speaker 3: front of them. They can be pragmatic because of their
- 8:58Speaker 3: pitching depth, and also I think the Brewers lead makes
- 9:02Speaker 3: them realistic as well. And so you just got to
- 9:08Speaker 3: hope that this pitching staff continues to step up. They've
- 9:12Speaker 3: done it all year long. You just wonder how long
- 9:19Speaker 3: can they do it. I think the segment was almost
- 9:22Speaker 3: almost forty games prior. I think they have the best
- 9:25Speaker 3: rotation er and the majors and just don't know if
- 9:29Speaker 3: that's going to continue.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's it's going to be tough for yeah
- 9:35Speaker 2: to that.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeahs As far as TI owned is it, did it
- 9:40Speaker 1: sound like this is like a minimum stay. It's just
- 9:43Speaker 1: the way you were talking and the way the quotes
- 9:45Speaker 1: that I read, it seemed like this is extra caution
- 9:48Speaker 1: and like you said before October, but it I mean,
- 9:51Speaker 1: is this like a two weeks on the shelf and
- 9:54Speaker 1: he's back, is what they're thinking.
- 9:56Speaker 3: I mean, we'll see. They described it as expected to
- 10:00Speaker 3: be a minimal stint. We're talking about basically two starts.
- 10:06Speaker 3: They were working through some of the details. Tyon thought
- 10:09Speaker 3: he might go out for kind of a minor league
- 10:14Speaker 3: outing at some point, which made me think it might
- 10:18Speaker 3: be a little longer. But it was revealing too in
- 10:22Speaker 3: that Council is extremely conservative and he keeps pictures health
- 10:29Speaker 3: in mind all the time. I think that's why he
- 10:33Speaker 3: gets a lot out of his pictures, not just kind
- 10:36Speaker 3: of production wise, but also in terms of buy in
- 10:39Speaker 3: and trust. And so we'll see. Tyon made it sound
- 10:47Speaker 3: like this is kind of a minorish thing, something that
- 10:51Speaker 3: could be pushed through, something he could deal with if
- 10:54Speaker 3: the playoffs were going on right now. But we'll just
- 11:01Speaker 3: have to see. I think everyone knows in these sort
- 11:05Speaker 3: of situations, things pop up, things move in different directions.
- 11:10Speaker 3: We'll just have to wait and see.
- 11:13Speaker 1: All right, Patrick, let's take a quick break and come
- 11:15Speaker 1: back and talk a little bit about the twenty twenty
- 11:18Speaker 1: six schedule that just came out.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Kratz.
- 11:20Speaker 4: If you need to pay rent for your apartment and
- 11:22Speaker 4: you're not getting anything for it, then you probably haven't
- 11:24Speaker 4: heard of Built.
- 11:27Speaker 5: You have to pay rent every single month, why not
- 11:29Speaker 5: get some points that you can redeem for other things
- 11:32Speaker 5: that are a lot more fun than paying rent, like flights, hotels,
- 11:35Speaker 5: uber rides.
- 11:37Speaker 4: That's right, and it doesn't stop there. Built is about
- 11:40Speaker 4: making your entire neighborhood more rewarding. You can dine at
- 11:43Speaker 4: your favorite local restaurants, and you can earn additional points
- 11:46Speaker 4: with VIP treatment at certain fitness studios, and you can
- 11:50Speaker 4: also enjoy exclusive experiences that are just for Built members.
- 11:53Speaker 4: They announce them every month. Built is turning a monthly
- 11:56Speaker 4: expense into an opportunity to earn rewards and discover the
- 11:59Speaker 4: best that you're neighborhood has to offer. Your rent is
- 12:02Speaker 4: finally working for you, and you can earn points on
- 12:04Speaker 4: rent and around your neighborhood wherever you call home by
- 12:07Speaker 4: going to join Built dot com slash foul. That's j
- 12:10Speaker 4: o I n B I L T dot com slash
- 12:13Speaker 4: f o u L. Make sure to use our ur
- 12:15Speaker 4: L so they know that FT sent you get after it.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Okay, Patrick, we had the twenty twenty six schedule come
- 12:24Speaker 1: out earlier this week. No Japan trip, no no what's
- 12:33Speaker 1: called the Field of Dreams game, no London trip, nothing
- 12:37Speaker 1: crazy this year, So there's no no dates to circle
- 12:41Speaker 1: and say, this is it. This is the big thing
- 12:43Speaker 1: everyone's focusing on. Frankly, I liked that let's stress about
- 12:50Speaker 1: our budget and where we'll be. But but I know
- 12:55Speaker 1: fans enjoy those those fun trips. I mean, it's only
- 13:01Speaker 1: been since twenty twenty three, but it feels like it's
- 13:03Speaker 1: been a while since they opened it home and what
- 13:06Speaker 1: a weird opening homestand with the Nationals and Angels.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I try not to complain about schedules and balanced schedules
- 13:16Speaker 1: and things like that, but I'm starting to wonder if
- 13:21Speaker 1: if this, you know, a very balanced schedule is kind
- 13:24Speaker 1: of boring and lead leads to stuff that I'm just like, really,
- 13:28Speaker 1: they're opening against the Nationals and then the Angels come
- 13:31Speaker 1: to town like in April, and at like March and
- 13:34Speaker 1: April and Chicago, Like this sounds terrible.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, obviously, when the schedule comes out, I
- 13:42Speaker 3: think we look at it for selfish reasons of like, oh,
- 13:44Speaker 3: which trip you want to take and which cities and
- 13:48Speaker 3: the timing of all that. But after this year's opening schedule,
- 13:53Speaker 3: which is just like a gauntlet, obviously think a lot
- 13:57Speaker 3: will change during the off season. We'll see how teams
- 14:00Speaker 3: improve via trades and free agency. But it it looks
- 14:05Speaker 3: like a little bit of a soft landing there. I mean,
- 14:08Speaker 3: when you get Nationals Angels on the road to Cleveland,
- 14:12Speaker 3: then Tampa Pittsburgh comes in. Obviously the back half there
- 14:17Speaker 3: gets harder Phillies, Mets Phillies, Dodgers, Padres. But it after
- 14:24Speaker 3: getting the spring training and spending so much time like
- 14:27Speaker 3: working on Japan angles and listening to so many japan
- 14:30Speaker 3: questions and stuff like that, Like that, taking that off
- 14:33Speaker 3: the table makes this seem just a lot more manageable
- 14:41Speaker 3: from the club side. And then that you look for
- 14:44Speaker 3: kind of those like killer road trips in terms of
- 14:48Speaker 3: could sink a season, And they only have one three
- 14:50Speaker 3: city road trip and it ends on the South Side
- 14:54Speaker 3: against the White Sox, and it's really may like it
- 14:57Speaker 3: seems like it's set up pretty well for them, at
- 15:02Speaker 3: least compared to the beginning of this season, because I
- 15:05Speaker 3: think we both were looking at this like this could
- 15:07Speaker 3: like they need to you get off to a good start,
- 15:10Speaker 3: they need to at least tread water, because it felt
- 15:12Speaker 3: like it was just like they're going to be facing
- 15:14Speaker 3: like playoff caliber starters and bullpens over and over and again.
- 15:18Speaker 3: And to their credit, they answered the bell there.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Yeah this, I mean, really looking at the schedule, there's
- 15:25Speaker 1: just not any long stretches of play, you know, rain
- 15:29Speaker 1: outs and everything will change that, you know, the end
- 15:33Speaker 1: of April into May looks a little daunting.
- 15:39Speaker 2: But like you said that, like I.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Can't remember a season where there's just one three city
- 15:46Speaker 1: trip and this three city trip ends in Chicago.
- 15:49Speaker 3: What they do and they don't go west?
- 15:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, like they have two West coast trips and
- 15:58Speaker 1: their two city trips. I've never seen this before, Like
- 16:01Speaker 1: I feel like usually almost always there's one three city
- 16:06Speaker 1: West coast trip. Sometimes there's two three city West Coast trips.
- 16:12Speaker 1: So this is this sets up nicely. We don't know what,
- 16:16Speaker 1: you know, We're not going to spend this whole segment
- 16:20Speaker 1: talking about whether Kyle Tucker is on this team or not.
- 16:23Speaker 1: But we don't know what this lineup looks like. We
- 16:25Speaker 1: don't know what the team looks like. But just looking
- 16:29Speaker 1: at when you think of travel and when you think
- 16:31Speaker 1: of the types of non baseball things that can that
- 16:35Speaker 1: can impact you, think about go back to twenty eighteen,
- 16:41Speaker 1: that the end of that season was really hectic.
- 16:44Speaker 2: That had to do with rain as well.
- 16:48Speaker 1: I believe there was a hurricane that that really screwed
- 16:51Speaker 1: up travel and everything and that impact that that was
- 16:57Speaker 1: a huge impact, and we just don't know how much
- 17:00Speaker 1: it changed the course of that season. But it's hard
- 17:03Speaker 1: to look back at that stretch of play and just
- 17:06Speaker 1: say like, oh, it didn't do anything to them right
- 17:11Speaker 1: now on like just looking at it without the rainouts
- 17:14Speaker 1: and everything factored in, it doesn't look like they have
- 17:16Speaker 1: anything crazy that they have to deal with. No weird travel,
- 17:20Speaker 1: no extensive travel. For me, if you're a fan, I
- 17:27Speaker 1: think the probably the fun trip is Boston to end
- 17:32Speaker 1: the season, or Seattle, Arizona. There's no like multi city trippery, like, oh,
- 17:37Speaker 1: every single one of those is great.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Maybe La San Diego, but.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Seattle is always a destination in Boston. I feel like
- 17:44Speaker 1: our destinations, so those are the two series and the
- 17:48Speaker 1: end the season Boston.
- 17:49Speaker 2: That's kind of cool.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean the trip I am currently on, it's
- 17:56Speaker 3: in reverse next year of Colorado seven Cisco in the
- 18:00Speaker 3: middle of June there. I think that's one A lot
- 18:04Speaker 3: of Cubs sins would circle or they're just already kind
- 18:06Speaker 3: of in the Denver area or the Bay area. But
- 18:11Speaker 3: that's something as you know, doing this job, like Cubs
- 18:14Speaker 3: fans are everywhere, the WGN effect, all the Chicago people
- 18:20Speaker 3: who've moved across the country or just watched the Cubs
- 18:24Speaker 3: on TV, like they are everywhere. I mean I also
- 18:30Speaker 3: look at it too, of like when Interleague was more staggered.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I felt like when the Yankees would come to Wrigley Field,
- 18:38Speaker 3: it was like a huge deal, or if the Red
- 18:41Speaker 3: Sox came in, it was like, oh my god, like
- 18:44Speaker 3: everyone was kind of planning for that. I think some
- 18:47Speaker 3: of that shine has been lost. I mean, they'll obviously,
- 18:52Speaker 3: I mean, the Cubs will get forty thousand when they're
- 18:54Speaker 3: playing the Pirates on a Saturday in August, so it
- 18:56Speaker 3: doesn't matter. So like there'll be a huge crowds at
- 18:58Speaker 3: Yankee stadium, but in the Yankees coming to Wrigley Field
- 19:01Speaker 3: next August. But in terms of an event, I think
- 19:06Speaker 3: it's lessened somewhat. You would hope the Cubs in Red
- 19:13Speaker 3: Sox still have something to play for at the end
- 19:15Speaker 3: of September. That either there you want them either already
- 19:19Speaker 3: clinched and set up or already eliminated and out of it.
- 19:24Speaker 3: I guess the other September thing for me was six
- 19:28Speaker 3: games against the Brewers in nine days in early September.
- 19:34Speaker 3: This is your first chance to write off the twenty
- 19:36Speaker 3: twenty six Brewers, saying how you don't think they're that good.
- 19:40Speaker 6: But when free agents they probably trade Freddy Peralta whoever
- 19:46Speaker 6: they trade pretty per Alta for like either hits three hundred,
- 19:51Speaker 6: it's multiple crucial, uh.
- 19:53Speaker 2: You know, game winning hits against the Cubs.
- 19:57Speaker 1: And the reliever that they pay Cup that's thirty six
- 20:01Speaker 1: and never had a good season dominates. I refuse to
- 20:06Speaker 1: write them off never again. I just I should just
- 20:12Speaker 1: you know, write and pen every year going forward.
- 20:16Speaker 2: N L Central Champs Milwaukee Brewers.
- 20:19Speaker 1: It doesn't matter what their offseason looks like, how good
- 20:24Speaker 1: it looks on paper. We know what they'll they'll end
- 20:27Speaker 1: up doing. I always think Fenway is a fun trip.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I do agree with you, it's a little weird. It's
- 20:36Speaker 1: a little weird to have it at the end of
- 20:37Speaker 1: the season. I hope it does mean something, but I
- 20:41Speaker 1: guess there's a good chance it won't at that point
- 20:43Speaker 1: in the season. But Fenway and for me Seattle are
- 20:46Speaker 1: always fun trips. We'll see how interesting the actual season is.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Let's let's come back and talk about something that Tommy
- 20:54Speaker 1: Hotty be brought up when Kyle Hendricks face the cups
- 20:58Speaker 1: FT FAM.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Welcome to the World's most Comfortable Swimwear for a moment,
- 21:02Speaker 4: we are talking about Fair Harbor. We actually have some
- 21:06Speaker 4: show and tell today. This is the liner that you're
- 21:09Speaker 4: working with inside of the shorts and the bathing suits.
- 21:15Speaker 5: You know what the best part is about this gut
- 21:17Speaker 5: what They have a lot of different options because these
- 21:19Speaker 5: are clearly yours, because I would never order this pattern.
- 21:21Speaker 2: But that is so may on you. That is so
- 21:23Speaker 2: many these are so you.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Mine are a little bit more plain than this, yes,
- 21:26Speaker 5: but they are super comfortable. The liner. I love liner shorts.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Some people don't, but these liners are better than most
- 21:33Speaker 5: that I've had on if not all of them.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Yeah, this is the best liner out there.
- 21:36Speaker 2: No mash all the above is perfect exactly.
- 21:39Speaker 4: It's really good. You got to give it a shot.

- 22:01Speaker 2: Patrick.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Tommy hot Toby brought up something interesting. Kyle Hendricks pitching
- 22:06Speaker 1: against the Cubs, uh for the first time always, I mean,
- 22:11Speaker 1: just one of the best guys we've ever covered for sure. Uh,
- 22:21Speaker 1: and you know, pitch some of the biggest games in
- 22:24Speaker 1: Cubs history. Kind of like, I guess, tell me, tell
- 22:27Speaker 1: us what what Tommy kind of said and kind of
- 22:31Speaker 1: sparked this idea.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Yeah, there was kind of a back and forth on Friday,
- 22:36Speaker 3: that last Friday, that first day in Anaheim for the club,
- 22:42Speaker 3: and Kyle did some media in the interview room and
- 22:47Speaker 3: then he of course mentioned Tommy hotteby and then uh,
- 22:53Speaker 3: how to become out of the field. Just spoke with
- 22:55Speaker 3: a couple of us, and one of the things he
- 22:58Speaker 3: brought up was, quote, he's on my Mount rushmore of
- 23:03Speaker 3: Cubs pitchers, And you know, I love that phrasing just
- 23:11Speaker 3: because it definitely gets people riled up one way or
- 23:16Speaker 3: the other. And you know, the cases pretty strong. I
- 23:22Speaker 3: don't know how you could keep him off of it
- 23:25Speaker 3: when you talk about just the moments. So the two
- 23:30Speaker 3: of the biggest games in franchise, definitely the biggest game
- 23:32Speaker 3: franchise history, starting that one and performing very well, though
- 23:38Speaker 3: his role in it, you know, became sort of overshadowed
- 23:41Speaker 3: by Joe MADD's decision to pull him early and all
- 23:43Speaker 3: the crazy stuff that happened into the night and into
- 23:47Speaker 3: the early morning there in Cleveland. But I mean that
- 23:51Speaker 3: game against the Dodgers when they won their first pennant
- 23:54Speaker 3: in was it seventy one years something like that, A
- 23:59Speaker 3: very very long long time.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Seventy one That makes sense.
- 24:03Speaker 3: To do that against, you know, a future Hall of
- 24:09Speaker 3: Famer in Clayton Kershaw. That's the kind of historical context
- 24:16Speaker 3: and his longevity, his numbers. When you go to like
- 24:21Speaker 3: Cubs dot Com and look at all time leaders, like
- 24:24Speaker 3: he is up there for a franchise that you know,
- 24:27Speaker 3: opened in eighteen seventy six, so he has that. And
- 24:31Speaker 3: then obviously just the person he is, not that you
- 24:35Speaker 3: do it off of someone you know, being gracious, but
- 24:39Speaker 3: just an absolute teammate, Just an extremely intelligent, hardworking individual,
- 24:52Speaker 3: beloved by teammates, beloved by fans like I don't think
- 24:58Speaker 3: you can put four pitch sure's ahead of him when
- 25:01Speaker 3: you kind of tell the story of the Cubs and
- 25:04Speaker 3: there's a little bit of recency bias there, but just
- 25:06Speaker 3: the impact, the enormity of those moments when he came through.
- 25:11Speaker 3: I think I'm with hot of you on this one.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree.
- 25:16Speaker 1: You know, it'd be tough to leave him off that
- 25:18Speaker 1: Dodgers game, that game six, if I'm unless I'm changing
- 25:23Speaker 1: history here. They faced twenty seven batters between him and Chapman, right,
- 25:28Speaker 1: there were a couple of double plays that that might
- 25:30Speaker 1: maybe even a pickoff. It was it was just one
- 25:35Speaker 1: of those outings where it's where it's like, how's this
- 25:38Speaker 1: guy doing it? That season for Kyle Hendrix was how
- 25:41Speaker 1: is this guy doing it?
- 25:42Speaker 2: Uh? For me, just watching him do that and and.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Not in an era when strikeouts were everything for pitchers.
- 25:51Speaker 1: It really ramped up around that time how important strikeouts were.
- 25:55Speaker 2: And he's just not a strikeout guy. He was a
- 25:59Speaker 2: guy that always got the results in the minors and
- 26:04Speaker 2: talking to scouts, talking to people around the game. They
- 26:07Speaker 2: were fine with him. They thought he would be fine.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Nobody expected this, Nobody expected what he became, the stretch
- 26:14Speaker 1: that he had among the best eras in baseball for
- 26:18Speaker 1: a period of time, you know, up there with Hall
- 26:21Speaker 1: of famers like Sure's er Kershaw, granky guys that are
- 26:25Speaker 1: going to be in the Hall of Fame. Just just
- 26:29Speaker 1: really impressive numbers for a long period of time, super
- 26:33Speaker 1: consistent and just like you said, great teammate, great guy
- 26:36Speaker 1: to be around, easy to talk to. You know, I
- 26:40Speaker 1: think if you're going then tarty of Cubs organization. I
- 26:46Speaker 1: mean Ferdy Jenkins is the first one there. And then
- 26:50Speaker 1: you just go through debates, right like are you gonna
- 26:53Speaker 1: go put like a guy like I don't know anything
- 26:55Speaker 1: about three Finger Mortar Kai Brown other than his name.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Then like after that.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I mean he has a boutique cocktail bar at the
- 27:04Speaker 3: hotel's ACME. I mean, what else could you possibly want
- 27:08Speaker 3: in terms of a legacy.
- 27:10Speaker 1: And then then there's like Rick Suckliffe, Carrie Wood, John Lester,
- 27:17Speaker 1: Jake Arietta. I don't know where you want to put
- 27:20Speaker 1: these guys and who else goes on that list. I
- 27:24Speaker 1: feel like Kyle Hendricks, Fergie Jenkins probably I didn't even
- 27:28Speaker 1: say Greg Maddox.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Like he's got to go on there, even if like
- 27:32Speaker 3: he's a symbol of like organizational incompetence and like one
- 27:36Speaker 3: of the worst, you know, bungled negotiations. Ever, I think
- 27:42Speaker 3: ultimately people think of him more with the Braves, even
- 27:45Speaker 3: though he was a homegrown cub. Yeah, I think it's Fergie,
- 27:49Speaker 3: of course, Maddox just because this is where he started
- 27:53Speaker 3: and he came back and you know, he clearly has
- 27:56Speaker 3: you know, very it is to their credit that they
- 27:59Speaker 3: were able to mend that relationship, and like he still
- 28:02Speaker 3: seems to it was just such a legendary figure. I
- 28:06Speaker 3: think he's got to go there, Hendrix. And then fourth,
- 28:09Speaker 3: I would probably go John Lester, but I'm curious, see
- 28:12Speaker 3: what you'd said.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I I think I I agree with you on that,
- 28:16Speaker 1: and then I start I would think about, like, you know,
- 28:21Speaker 1: does matics not go on there?
- 28:22Speaker 2: And you put Sutcliffe on.
- 28:24Speaker 1: There or uh, but for like, I think I'd lean
- 28:28Speaker 1: back to just going, yeah, you have to have Maddix
- 28:31Speaker 1: on there. He's one of the greatest pictures of all time.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I think the interesting debate would be Jake Arietta, for
- 28:37Speaker 1: that stretch that he had. Is that good enough to
- 28:39Speaker 1: put him on there? Just for that stretch? I think
- 28:43Speaker 1: the end of his time is second stint with the
- 28:46Speaker 1: Cubs was so bad that maybe you say, you know,
- 28:50Speaker 1: that's enough to say, like, Okay, this debate isn't worth having.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Those are the two names. Rick Suckliffe and Arieta. Carrie
- 28:57Speaker 1: Wood has a moment. If we're doing Moment Hall like
- 29:00Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore, Carrie Woods on there. He has one of
- 29:03Speaker 1: the greatest games ever pitched, period and he did it
- 29:08Speaker 1: in the Cub's uniform as a rookie. It's like one
- 29:11Speaker 1: of those unforgettable moments. You know, career marred by injuries
- 29:17Speaker 1: and and you know he's a he's a great Cub.
- 29:19Speaker 1: It just it's hard to put him on that on
- 29:22Speaker 1: that list. Other than that, I mean, there are names
- 29:26Speaker 1: that I'm just not super familiar with, like Rick.
- 29:29Speaker 2: I mean, I know who Rick Rushell is right.
- 29:32Speaker 1: I just didn't, you know, watch him pitch you know
- 29:36Speaker 1: the rest of these, I mean, Carlos and Browno is
- 29:38Speaker 1: a great name to put on that list. Ken Holtzman,
- 29:43Speaker 1: I mean, you know, you know, these are the names
- 29:46Speaker 1: that I think of, but like that they're not I
- 29:50Speaker 1: think I think you have the right list. I think
- 29:52Speaker 1: that's like, as much as I debate it, some of
- 29:56Speaker 1: those names, I think ultimately that's those are the four
- 29:59Speaker 1: I would go with. And I like these debates. I
- 30:03Speaker 1: like thinking about it. And it was fun to see
- 30:06Speaker 1: Kyle Hendrix out there and.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Kind of do it.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Like we didn't really talk about this, but he kind
- 30:12Speaker 1: of pitched like he always does. He didn't he wasn't
- 30:14Speaker 1: you know, like there wasn't any dominance or anything like that.
- 30:17Speaker 1: It wasn't twenty sixteen version of Hendrix, but it was
- 30:20Speaker 1: the guy that just kind of gets by and it's
- 30:22Speaker 1: like wait, you look up and it's like, oh, he
- 30:24Speaker 1: had a pretty decent start. I don't remember dominating in
- 30:28Speaker 1: any way, but he got the job done. Obviously the
- 30:31Speaker 1: Angels didn't win, but he was solid.
- 30:34Speaker 3: Yeah. I think for me, if Carlosenbrano would be more
- 30:40Speaker 3: of like a mount Moore rush More of like cubby
- 30:43Speaker 3: character characters.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Mean because his numbers are are up there. Just didn't
- 30:49Speaker 3: quite put everything together, but just as like an amazing
- 30:53Speaker 3: homegrown sort of story, just a volatile character who was
- 30:58Speaker 3: also extremely funny and could be very warm and just
- 31:04Speaker 3: super entertaining. Like I think when you think of like
- 31:08Speaker 3: the Cubs and the Cubs being this like machine circus,
- 31:13Speaker 3: like he is there and a guy who produced for
- 31:16Speaker 3: a very long time, and I think, Carrie, what is
- 31:20Speaker 3: more one of those like Mount Rushmore of sort of
- 31:22Speaker 3: like kind of what the Cubs became almost or just
- 31:27Speaker 3: of like kind of the he encapsulates a lot of
- 31:32Speaker 3: the Cubs experience. That was always cool how he just
- 31:35Speaker 3: kind of you know, settled in the Chicago area and
- 31:38Speaker 3: hearing little stories about like him being like you know,
- 31:42Speaker 3: a bench coach on like youth baseball travel teams or
- 31:45Speaker 3: whatever it was, like photos and stuff like that. You
- 31:48Speaker 3: just see him around with someone you know who gets
- 31:51Speaker 3: it and was a you know, great link I think
- 31:54Speaker 3: to you know, Ron Santo and someone who really appreciated
- 31:58Speaker 3: playing at Wrigley. And then yeah, after that, a lot
- 32:02Speaker 3: of guys you way before our time not really modern baseball.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Not gonna put them over it, but I think I
- 32:10Speaker 3: think we got to got to a good place on
- 32:12Speaker 3: this one. Thank you Tommy Hottevey for programming our segment here.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Yeah, appreciate it, Tommy.
- 32:20Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back with another episode, a mail
- 32:23Speaker 1: bag episode episode and really let you guys vent. We'll
- 32:28Speaker 1: see how Thursday's game goes. But even so, whatever happens,
- 32:33Speaker 1: I think still still there's a lot of banks in
- 32:36Speaker 1: kubby Land. Thanks so much for listening to everyone. This is
