- 3:08Speaker 3: Doctor Robin Broughton and Christopher Vincent for broad Adventures are here.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Good morning, Good morning folks, welcome to the show.
- 3:15Speaker 6: Good morning, thanks for having us.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Thank you for being or first of all, ask the
- 3:18Speaker 3: obvious question, what is Broughton Adventures.
- 3:21Speaker 7: Well, Broughton Adventures offers a service for people who might
- 3:24Speaker 7: be a little nervous about international travel, want to see
- 3:28Speaker 7: the world, but just a little anxious about it. So
- 3:32Speaker 7: we offer trips, group trips that people can sign up for,
- 3:37Speaker 7: all led by experienced guides. These are great for people
- 3:42Speaker 7: who maybe they don't have travel buddies and they just
- 3:45Speaker 7: want to join a trip.
- 3:47Speaker 6: And then we also offer.
- 3:49Speaker 7: The ability to choose your own location and we'll plan
- 3:53Speaker 7: the trip for you and send an experienced guide with you.
- 3:57Speaker 7: We have ten guides who work for us, and that's
- 3:59Speaker 7: what we do. We help you see the world.
- 4:01Speaker 3: And I'm looking at the places that you can send people.
- 4:04Speaker 3: This is not exactly like we're talking about going to
- 4:06Speaker 3: Myrtle Beach here. I mean there's anything wrong with Myrtle Beach,
- 4:08Speaker 3: but I'm looking at Dubai, Ecuador, Kilimanjaro, different safaris, Norway.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I mean, as we say in southern West Virginia, that's
- 4:18Speaker 3: a fur piece. Yeah, that's a fur piece.
- 4:21Speaker 7: From here, we go all over the world, all over
- 4:23Speaker 7: the world, so Middle East, we do a lot of
- 4:25Speaker 7: European countries. The African Safari is super popular, and we
- 4:32Speaker 7: do it at a good price. Our slogan is big adventures,
- 4:35Speaker 7: little cost.
- 4:37Speaker 3: So let's talk about the travel adventure business in general.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I mean, of course, it, like everything else, suffered with COVID.
- 4:44Speaker 3: You know, obviously a couple of years ago. How's the
- 4:47Speaker 3: rebound been from that.
- 4:49Speaker 7: I think the rebound's really been excellent. I think people,
- 4:53Speaker 7: especially after COVID being isolated, have been very excited to
- 4:58Speaker 7: get out and travel, and I think that just having
- 5:02Speaker 7: an experienced guide with you really helps helps with that.
- 5:06Speaker 7: But yeah, we've had We've had a lot of a
- 5:08Speaker 7: lot of success with our trips and we are based
- 5:12Speaker 7: locally here in Charleston, West Virginia. I began leading trips
- 5:16Speaker 7: at West Virginia State University as a professor for twenty
- 5:19Speaker 7: five years and now it's it's a full time business.
- 5:24Speaker 3: So why, I mean, what was it that about for
- 5:27Speaker 3: either one of you? What was it about this business
- 5:28Speaker 3: that excited you, that made you want to do this?
- 5:31Speaker 7: Well, I I'll let my lead guide Christopher answer that one,
- 5:35Speaker 7: since I've been talking so much.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Well, that's that's all right.
- 5:39Speaker 8: So I've always wanted to travel the world, and I
- 5:42Speaker 8: actually never traveled at on. A lot of a lot
- 5:45Speaker 8: of people know me as a world traveler, but I
- 5:46Speaker 8: didn't travel at all until I lived in West Virginia.
- 5:49Speaker 3: You's got a later start, Yeah, I got a.
- 5:50Speaker 8: Late start, yeah, and it's it's thanks to Robin that
- 5:54Speaker 8: you know had I've seen twenty six countries now, and
- 6:00Speaker 8: I just wanted the culture, one of the real experiences
- 6:03Speaker 8: of traveling. I didn't I didn't want the We don't
- 6:06Speaker 8: do touristy things either. We do some touristy things, but
- 6:08Speaker 8: it's a fair mix of tourists and cultural experiences. So
- 6:11Speaker 8: we you know, we really try to get the most
- 6:15Speaker 8: out of every place that we go.
- 6:16Speaker 3: What's been some of the most exciting places, And this
- 6:19Speaker 3: is a personal question for either one of you that
- 6:21Speaker 3: you've that you've gone, what's been the most exciting thing?
- 6:24Speaker 8: Japan is like the closest thing to visiting another planet
- 6:28Speaker 8: that you're gonna really Yeah, why is that? It's just
- 6:31Speaker 8: everything is just so different. It's like it's like the
- 6:34Speaker 8: entire world just went on a different timeline.
- 6:36Speaker 3: See that Now that surprises me because I would think
- 6:40Speaker 3: that it wouldn't be that different in Japan, because I mean,
- 6:42Speaker 3: their their culture seems to be similar to ours. But
- 6:46Speaker 3: maybe not. I've learned something here today. I mean I
- 6:49Speaker 3: would thought it probably would would would be a lot
- 6:52Speaker 3: like America, but I guess not.
- 6:53Speaker 8: Uh No, It's it's really interesting that you'll i mean
- 6:58Speaker 8: from small things like you know, Shabuja crossing where a
- 7:01Speaker 8: thousand people cross the street at the same time and
- 7:04Speaker 8: you don't hear a word from anybody.
- 7:06Speaker 3: It's just footsteps, you know.
- 7:08Speaker 8: I mean, you'll be on the subway with a hundred
- 7:10Speaker 8: Japanese businessman and you'll only hear the word of the subway.
- 7:13Speaker 7: You know.
- 7:13Speaker 8: It's just like it's a very quiet culture and it's there.
- 7:16Speaker 3: They're very subdued people. Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 8: Absolutely, And then you want to talk about the technology.
- 7:21Speaker 8: I mean, everything's really just everything is just next level
- 7:24Speaker 8: over there. They thought about every single tiny little thing,
- 7:26Speaker 8: and the and the way that they just walking down
- 7:29Speaker 8: the street and you see like a Japanese businessman next
- 7:32Speaker 8: to just a regular citizen and like these tattered pickup
- 7:36Speaker 8: like safety clothes because they're picking up every little piece
- 7:40Speaker 8: of everything on the street. I saw a guy just
- 7:42Speaker 8: like working at a piece of chewing gum for like
- 7:45Speaker 8: five minutes because he just had to get that gum up.
- 7:47Speaker 8: So it's like a very clean New York City, but
- 7:49Speaker 8: just like really high tech. It's it's otherworldly.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Honestly, I think it says like we need to bring
- 7:53Speaker 3: some of those people here on the turnpike.
- 7:57Speaker 8: But Safari would be a close. Uh do you want
- 8:01Speaker 8: to talk about Safaria?
- 8:02Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 8:02Speaker 6: Sure, sure, the Safari.
- 8:04Speaker 7: I think that's when people ask me the the one trip,
- 8:07Speaker 7: if you can only do one, what should you do?
- 8:09Speaker 7: And I would definitely say the African Safari. You get
- 8:13Speaker 7: to well, first of all, we are we base the
- 8:17Speaker 7: trip in Zanzibar, which is an exotic island off the
- 8:20Speaker 7: coast of East Africa, and so.
- 8:24Speaker 6: You have all the island life.
- 8:26Speaker 7: But then one day you get in a plane and
- 8:29Speaker 7: you fly to the mainland and you land right in
- 8:31Speaker 7: the plains of Africa and you hop in these jeeps
- 8:35Speaker 7: and you're just roaming around and you're seeing elephants and giraffes,
- 8:38Speaker 7: and we see lions every single time, you know, you
- 8:43Speaker 7: see the mass I, the traditional mass I Warriors. It's
- 8:48Speaker 7: it's it's the the number one bucket list trip in
- 8:51Speaker 7: my opinion.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Talking to folks again from Broaden Adventures, but Dave Island
- 8:54Speaker 3: showing five eighty live is brought to you a part
- 8:56Speaker 3: by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. Birds
- 8:58Speaker 3: continuing their long road trip. They're not back at the
- 9:01Speaker 3: ballpark until one week from Friday. At that time they'll
- 9:04Speaker 3: kick off a Labor Day weekends set against Gastonia. For tickets,
- 9:07Speaker 3: Birds merchandise promotion schedules more visit dirty Birds baseball dot com.
- 9:11Speaker 3: All right, so what do you say to somebody who's
- 9:13Speaker 3: listening right and thinking, man, you know, I really want
- 9:17Speaker 3: I'd love to do something like this, but they're just
- 9:20Speaker 3: a little bit on the scared side, you know, a
- 9:22Speaker 3: little bit I was scared. It's not the right word, Robert,
- 9:24Speaker 3: I'd say maybe a little bit apprehensive. What would you
- 9:26Speaker 3: say to them.
- 9:27Speaker 7: Well, I would say, first of all, that's understandable in
- 9:30Speaker 7: the climate today, but that's what we work at. Our
- 9:34Speaker 7: number one priority is safety for our clients, and we
- 9:39Speaker 7: have ten very experienced guides. They've traveled the world. We
- 9:43Speaker 7: are all involved in language training, so you'll have a
- 9:47Speaker 7: guide with you that speaks to the language, that's been
- 9:50Speaker 7: to the country before, that has CBR training and all that,
- 9:54Speaker 7: not that you would need it, but that's prepared to
- 9:56Speaker 7: deal with emergency situations, all very well versed in getting
- 10:01Speaker 7: you through those anxious moments like at airports and going
- 10:04Speaker 7: through customs and security.
- 10:06Speaker 6: We're right there every step of the way.
- 10:08Speaker 3: That's a very good point because for and I'm not
- 10:11Speaker 3: somebody who's done a whole lot of travel in my life,
- 10:13Speaker 3: but I can tell you one out of the country
- 10:14Speaker 3: trip that I took, I was more I was more
- 10:17Speaker 3: concerned about the airport and gaging through that then I
- 10:21Speaker 3: was when we got to the resort that we were visiting.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I was a lot more concerned in the airport because
- 10:25Speaker 3: it was a totally different world than when you fly
- 10:27Speaker 3: into some of these other countries, you know, And he
- 10:29Speaker 3: was talking about the difference between the culture even right
- 10:33Speaker 3: down to the airport, and the public transportation is a
- 10:35Speaker 3: heck of a lot different in some countries than what
- 10:37Speaker 3: it is here.
- 10:38Speaker 7: Right exactly exactly, and that's it. There can be high anxiety,
- 10:41Speaker 7: but we do everything to relieve that. And yeah, and
- 10:46Speaker 7: we've we've just had thousands of positive experiences. And even
- 10:52Speaker 7: though we are based in Charleston, we have people traveling
- 10:55Speaker 7: with us from all over the country. So we just
- 10:59Speaker 7: planned trips for eight people out of Denver, Colorado for
- 11:03Speaker 7: upcoming Norway trip.
- 11:05Speaker 3: So you take care of everything. I mean, if I
- 11:07Speaker 3: pick one of these places and I'll just say I'm
- 11:10Speaker 3: gonna I'm gonna go to Killmajaro, you take care of
- 11:12Speaker 3: pretty much everything.
- 11:14Speaker 7: Yeah, and Kilimanjaro is it's kind of a special trip
- 11:17Speaker 7: because of course that involves climbing the highest mountain in
- 11:21Speaker 7: Africa almost twenty thousand feet. So we also have experienced
- 11:25Speaker 7: guides who have summitted the mountain, who provide the clients
- 11:30Speaker 7: with training plans.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Okay, I was gonna say, because that's not something you
- 11:33Speaker 3: just show up and go out. I can climb that mountains.
- 11:36Speaker 3: It's a no matter how good a shape you may
- 11:38Speaker 3: be in, you may not be ready for that. So
- 11:40Speaker 3: talk about that training aspect.
- 11:42Speaker 7: Right, Yeah, So the training is for that, that's very important.
- 11:46Speaker 7: And for those who are going locally, we organize hikes,
- 11:49Speaker 7: We get pep you know, we get people ready for
- 11:52Speaker 7: the trip, make sure that they have everything they need.
- 11:54Speaker 7: That's all important, all the supplies and trucking gear and such.
- 11:59Speaker 6: But for all the trips we.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Uh, we tell people all they really need to do
- 12:04Speaker 7: is show up at the airport with their passport, okay,
- 12:07Speaker 7: and we provide a packet that tells them everything from
- 12:11Speaker 7: the time change to how currency will be converted, what
- 12:15Speaker 7: electric converter they'll need to use in that country.
- 12:19Speaker 6: We give them some language tips, and.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I would think you would also This kind of goes
- 12:23Speaker 3: back to Christopher, to what you were saying. I think
- 12:24Speaker 3: you would also want to give them some tips about
- 12:26Speaker 3: the culture too, because you can go to another country
- 12:29Speaker 3: or deal with people from other countries and you can
- 12:31Speaker 3: greatly offend them without actually meaning to. And so with
- 12:34Speaker 3: every country you go to, there are certain protocols that
- 12:36Speaker 3: we may not know what I'm making.
- 12:37Speaker 8: Sure, Yeah, especially like Middle Eastern culture and everything, there's this,
- 12:40Speaker 8: you know, it's everything operates very differently. But to your
- 12:44Speaker 8: earlier points. When you go to the website, you'll see
- 12:46Speaker 8: a price there and that's going to include the airfare,
- 12:49Speaker 8: the lodging, different curated experiences and.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Uh and uh.
- 12:58Speaker 8: And it is getting way way more intoimidating like international travel,
- 13:02Speaker 8: like I'm even a feeling, you know, and you're getting
- 13:05Speaker 8: herded like through airports. Now, you know, it's just a
- 13:08Speaker 8: it's a really intimidating process.
- 13:10Speaker 3: So you guys are going to make it easier on
- 13:12Speaker 3: them though.
- 13:12Speaker 8: Yeah, we yeah, we we try to and at least
- 13:15Speaker 8: we you know, kind of act as a shield sometimes,
- 13:19Speaker 8: whatever it takes.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Give us the website again where people can learn more
- 13:22Speaker 3: because it's fascinating. I appreciate you guys coming in, but
- 13:24Speaker 3: it's all It all starts, I'm imagining by going to
- 13:26Speaker 3: your website. So sure, and now you can see what
- 13:28Speaker 3: you get there. What do you got?
- 13:29Speaker 7: It's Broughtonadventures dot com. So that's brought and br oug
- 13:34Speaker 7: h t o nadventures dot com.
- 13:36Speaker 3: All right, doctor Robin Broughton and Christopher Vincent. Appreciate you
- 13:39Speaker 3: both being here. Learned a lot, thanks a lot, thanks.

- 20:25Speaker 3: get to some stuff that I want to talk to
- 20:27Speaker 3: you about, we had some good news out of Morgantown yesterday.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Some players have been reinstated and it looks like they're
- 20:34Speaker 3: going to be playing one one. There was an academic issue,
- 20:37Speaker 3: but that notwithstanding, it looks like the players that were
- 20:40Speaker 3: in question are going to be playing this fall.
- 20:41Speaker 14: Talk about them, Yeah, I think it's a big news
- 20:44Speaker 14: because you know, they had hoped that they would be eligible.
- 20:47Speaker 14: They hoped that maybe half of them would be eligible.
- 20:51Speaker 14: I need more details because, you know, just because there's
- 20:54Speaker 14: an injunction.
- 20:56Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 20:56Speaker 14: Is that gonna last the season? I don't know, but uh,
- 21:00Speaker 14: if it does, I mean, uh, you know, good for them.
- 21:04Speaker 14: I mean depth at the Division one level, especially first
- 21:08Speaker 14: year coach rebuilding a roster, that's big.
- 21:11Speaker 3: News, all right. And uh, speaking of rebuilding Marshall rosters,
- 21:15Speaker 3: my Marshall thundering heard, I mean they got they got probably.
- 21:19Speaker 3: I saw a stat the other day that as far
- 21:21Speaker 3: as new players coming in, they got one. They're one
- 21:23Speaker 3: of the schools that has like the highest number of
- 21:26Speaker 3: new players. I mean, w U has got a lot
- 21:27Speaker 3: coming in. Marshall's really got a lot coming in there.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Uh do you want to mention that tonight we're gonna
- 21:32Speaker 3: paint the Capital City green up at the bill No
- 21:35Speaker 3: Flight School at the airport. Marshall University completely sold out.
- 21:39Speaker 3: It's not a seat available.
- 21:41Speaker 15: Man.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I'm going to be serving as the MC of that
- 21:43Speaker 3: event tonight. I'm looking forward to it. Coach Gibson's going
- 21:46Speaker 3: to be there. Other coaches, coach Jackson, coach Fulkes, new
- 21:49Speaker 3: athletic director Gerald Harrison's going to be there. Marshall President
- 21:52Speaker 3: Brad Smith, Mayor good One is going to give the
- 21:54Speaker 3: opening address. So it's it's going to be a great
- 21:56Speaker 3: night up at the of the bill, no flight school
- 21:59Speaker 3: to night as we pay the Capital City Green. And
- 22:01Speaker 3: I'm happy to say it's completely sold out.
- 22:03Speaker 4: I've been to that event.
- 22:04Speaker 14: I mean, for if you're a Marshall fan, that's one
- 22:07Speaker 14: thing of the year. If it's not a game itself,
- 22:10Speaker 14: you have to be there.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Yeah, if you got your ticket, definitely you got your
- 22:14Speaker 3: ticket because it's completely sold out. What about our young
- 22:16Speaker 3: man from Shepherd University, Man, that's awesome. He of course
- 22:23Speaker 3: out of Shepherd, played at Martinsburg High School, got undrafted,
- 22:29Speaker 3: went to the Chicago Bears, got some playing time, got
- 22:31Speaker 3: some starts, did really well. Now he just signed a
- 22:34Speaker 3: contract yesterday, Jim. He is going to be one of
- 22:37Speaker 3: the league's highest paid quarterbacks. I think this was like
- 22:40Speaker 3: a seven million dollar deal or something like that. Two years,
- 22:43Speaker 3: ten million or ten million, okay million, yes, to be
- 22:45Speaker 3: a backup quarterback and I'm not downplaying that because he
- 22:48Speaker 3: got playing time, it did pretty well. But what a
- 22:51Speaker 3: great story. I mean, everybody nationwide is talking about this
- 22:54Speaker 3: kid out of Martinsburg who played college ball at Sheppard.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Not ety five percent of the sports fans I've never
- 22:59Speaker 3: even heard of Shepherd outside the stay to West Virginia,
- 23:02Speaker 3: and it's it's the He's the toast of ESPN and
- 23:05Speaker 3: everywhere now.
- 23:05Speaker 14: Sports fans love underdog stories and he's he's it. He's
- 23:08Speaker 14: a good kid, it seems like. And I mean, if
- 23:11Speaker 14: you watch the press conference, if you haven't seen it,
- 23:13Speaker 14: go back and look it up, because it's a very
- 23:16Speaker 14: emotional for him. He comes from Martinsburg, played for the
- 23:20Speaker 14: Bulldogs up there, and you know, as you said, went
- 23:24Speaker 14: to Shepherd, he stayed there, he didn't transfer out and
- 23:28Speaker 14: finished a great college career. And good for him, Tyson Badge.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he's certainly, I mean, a success story. And
- 23:35Speaker 3: if you, as Jim said, if you heard the press conference,
- 23:38Speaker 3: he got a little teary eyed he was talking about
- 23:40Speaker 3: he said, I think, and I'm kind of paraphrasing here, Jim,
- 23:42Speaker 3: he said something to the effect of nobody around me
- 23:45Speaker 3: had money. Yeah, And he said my dad didn't have
- 23:48Speaker 3: running water until he was His dad's an interesting story
- 23:52Speaker 3: in his own right because he was like a world
- 23:53Speaker 3: arm wrestling champion or something. But his dad didn't have
- 23:56Speaker 3: running water until later in his life. And this kid
- 23:58Speaker 3: is is getting paid and it's a great story for
- 24:01Speaker 3: West Virginia. It really is, it really is. You have
- 24:04Speaker 3: got some big news from Wally and Whimpies.
- 24:06Speaker 14: Yeah, I do. We've always transitioned. I mean, it's a
- 24:09Speaker 14: thirty five year publication. It started in print only, it
- 24:14Speaker 14: was only during football season. I took it over in
- 24:16Speaker 14: twenty eighteen and took it year round as a print
- 24:19Speaker 14: and digital. Now we're transitioning even more. Beginning next week,
- 24:24Speaker 14: we're going to be a daily digital product and we'll
- 24:28Speaker 14: still do a weekly digital magazine as well. So it's
- 24:34Speaker 14: an exciting time for Walies and Whimpies. If you want
- 24:37Speaker 14: to sign up to get that daily, you go to
- 24:39Speaker 14: Wallywimpyesports dot com and you'll find out how to do.
- 24:42Speaker 4: It right there.
- 24:44Speaker 3: So you're gonna have enough content for daily.
- 24:46Speaker 16: I said that.
- 24:47Speaker 3: I said that tongue in cheek, but go ahead.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
- 24:50Speaker 2: You know.
- 24:52Speaker 14: Everybody like print, but print is confining, you know, you
- 24:57Speaker 14: only have so much space. You can only print X
- 25:00Speaker 14: number of pages when you put it out there. But digital,
- 25:02Speaker 14: I mean there's no limits.
- 25:04Speaker 3: I mean you can put that also edit digital to
- 25:07Speaker 3: to a certain extent, at least more so than you
- 25:10Speaker 3: can print. You know, once it's out there and it's
- 25:12Speaker 3: on your local convenience store shelf, that's it. You know,
- 25:15Speaker 3: that's it. But online you do have the ability to
- 25:18Speaker 3: a certain extent anyway to be able to go in
- 25:21Speaker 3: and go, okay, well we need to change this or whatever.
- 25:23Speaker 14: Which which I did yesterday with some scheduling, you know.
- 25:26Speaker 14: So the best example, I would say is with our
- 25:29Speaker 14: print product. Up to even last year, we were not
- 25:32Speaker 14: able to get the score of the Sunday night NFL
- 25:36Speaker 14: game or the Monday night game, and you would get
- 25:39Speaker 14: that a week later. Actually, because we update that NFL
- 25:43Speaker 14: page now we can get everything in there. The standings
- 25:47Speaker 14: are correct. It's just a much more efficient way to
- 25:50Speaker 14: get the information out there.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Jim Wrkman again of Wally and Wimpey's, and I failed
- 25:54Speaker 3: last time we had you on the show. As you
- 25:56Speaker 3: were getting ready to leave, I said, oh, by the way,
- 25:57Speaker 3: he's the executive director of the West Virginia Sports Writers
- 26:00Speaker 3: Association as well, So I want to make sure we
- 26:01Speaker 3: get that in there. But Dave Island Show on five

- 26:10Speaker 3: you most looking forward to about the upcoming football season?
- 26:14Speaker 14: You know, it's always exciting, but you know, new coaches
- 26:16Speaker 14: in Huntington and Morgantown. I mean, that's what this state
- 26:21Speaker 14: thrives on, is college football. I mean again, opening week,
- 26:27Speaker 14: Robert Morris is in Morgantown. They should be able to
- 26:31Speaker 14: take care of that game, we would hope, But you
- 26:35Speaker 14: know that second week in Ohio at Ohio the third week, Pitt, let.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Me go back a little bit. Yeah, when the WVU
- 26:41Speaker 3: schedule was finalized, I had you on the show and
- 26:47Speaker 3: you called it. Then you said, and you went on record,
- 26:51Speaker 3: it's saying that's going to be a difficult game for
- 26:53Speaker 3: the Mountaineers when they go into Athens.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:55Speaker 3: I think it is because their experience and you had
- 26:57Speaker 3: that as a loss for the Mountaineers.
- 26:59Speaker 14: I don't think I predicted a loss yet. I'm just
- 27:02Speaker 14: I just that's their best opportunity to get upset.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Okay, okay, I be not fair enough, fair enough, fair enough.
- 27:10Speaker 14: They've got an experienced quarterback, They've got a lot of
- 27:12Speaker 14: guys back, which is the opposite of Morgantown.
- 27:15Speaker 3: So well, and later today on Metro News, meddam, I'm
- 27:18Speaker 3: going to have Rob Cornelius, who was one of the guys.
- 27:20Speaker 3: In addition to being a political guy, he's also in
- 27:24Speaker 3: the booth for the broadcast, so he's already calling it
- 27:27Speaker 3: that it's in ohighway, that's.
- 27:29Speaker 14: What he should do, though he can probably make a
- 27:31Speaker 14: better case than I did.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, and that's why he would not be
- 27:33Speaker 3: doing his job if he didn't. We had a question
- 27:36Speaker 3: here for you, okay, it's said with rich Rod and
- 27:38Speaker 3: Pat Holme the first game in a couple of weeks
- 27:41Speaker 3: and Pitt not selling tickets Lol. Is the vibe regarding
- 27:45Speaker 3: mounthin or football starting to feel like it did twenty
- 27:47Speaker 3: years ago? I hope. So that's a question for you,
- 27:49Speaker 3: mister Worden.
- 27:49Speaker 14: Well, that's what people want. They want that vibe of
- 27:52Speaker 14: twenty years ago. So I think that's why they hired
- 27:55Speaker 14: rich Rodd and he's had success. I mean, I think
- 27:58Speaker 14: you know, enough time had passed that it's you know,
- 28:04Speaker 14: he's going to be welcomed much more than he would
- 28:07Speaker 14: have five to ten years ago.
- 28:09Speaker 4: So I think the timing is right.
- 28:12Speaker 14: They want that vibe back because they just didn't have
- 28:14Speaker 14: it in Neil Brown. Sorry, yeah, but I think it's
- 28:18Speaker 14: going to help recruiting. I mean, it's all about recruiting.
- 28:21Speaker 14: It's all about excitement in your fan base. And you
- 28:24Speaker 14: get both with rich Rod, I believe.
- 28:26Speaker 3: And rich Rod's made some noise in the first couple
- 28:28Speaker 3: of weeks by you know, calling some of his players soft.
- 28:31Speaker 3: And he's done that on more than one I mean
- 28:33Speaker 3: one time you just said, okay, just lost his school,
- 28:35Speaker 3: but he's done on more than one occasion. Now he's
- 28:36Speaker 3: a master motivator, and that's what master motivators do. I
- 28:40Speaker 3: mean you think about you know, I think about somebody
- 28:41Speaker 3: like Mike Didko, for example, who is a master who
- 28:44Speaker 3: is a master motivator, is going to get in your
- 28:45Speaker 3: face and tell you that you're you know, every everything
- 28:49Speaker 3: you don't want to be. You don't know how much
- 28:51Speaker 3: of that is he's just trying to motivate the guys
- 28:52Speaker 3: or how much he how much he truly believes, and
- 28:55Speaker 3: we forget.
- 28:56Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Somebody pointed out, they said, well, he's been away for
- 28:59Speaker 3: a while. It's not like he's been on a couch
- 29:01Speaker 3: watching Wheel of Fortune, you know. Ever since he left Morgantown,
- 29:03Speaker 3: he's been Jacksonville, State, Michigan, air's on all these different places.
- 29:07Speaker 3: So he's been out there.
- 29:08Speaker 14: Imagine a time in college football that it would make
- 29:13Speaker 14: headlines if a coach called his players soft. I mean,
- 29:16Speaker 14: that was every day, fifteen thousand times in the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties,
- 29:23Speaker 14: and all of a sudden, twenty twenty five, Rich Rudd
- 29:26Speaker 14: calls my kid soft. I may look to transfer.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Hell I had I had, I had math teachers that
- 29:31Speaker 3: called us soft, you know, right, But that's a that's
- 29:33Speaker 3: a difference in the generations, That's right, And it's and
- 29:36Speaker 3: I think again, I'm going to go back to the
- 29:39Speaker 3: motivational aspect. Whether you like rich Rod or you don't
- 29:42Speaker 3: like Rich Rudd, one thing about it. He is a
- 29:43Speaker 3: fiery guy, playing with your hairs on fire, you know,
- 29:46Speaker 3: the whole deal. And and and that's been missing in
- 29:50Speaker 3: Morgantown many people. I mean, and I'll say this about
- 29:54Speaker 3: about my alma mater. I mean, Huff could be a
- 29:56Speaker 3: fiery guy too. I'm interested to see what happens there
- 30:02Speaker 3: because you know, Tony Gibson is a West Virginia guy.
- 30:05Speaker 3: He actually wants to be here. I don't know about
- 30:08Speaker 3: some of the other coaches that we've had that maybe
- 30:10Speaker 3: didn't well, we know coach Huck didn't want to be here.
- 30:12Speaker 3: I'm not going to get off on that tangent, but
- 30:15Speaker 3: you know, Tony Gibson wants to be there. Corney Jackson,
- 30:18Speaker 3: the basketball coach, wants to be there. Kind of like
- 30:20Speaker 3: that vibe going on in Huntington as well. And we'll
- 30:23Speaker 3: stick the football right now. But I am still I'm
- 30:27Speaker 3: concerned about the upcoming Marshall season. I'll be honest with you,
- 30:29Speaker 3: just because there's just so many questions right now. They
- 30:31Speaker 3: may totally prove me wrong. I hope they do. I
- 30:34Speaker 3: hope the Mountaineers have a great season as well. There's
- 30:36Speaker 3: a lot of questions with both programs.
- 30:38Speaker 14: Yeah, it's really going to take a month into the
- 30:40Speaker 14: season to really see what kind of programmer, what kind
- 30:44Speaker 14: of season each of the teams is going to have.
- 30:46Speaker 14: The Thundering Herd and the Mountaineers.
- 30:48Speaker 3: What are you looking at as far as high school goes.
- 30:50Speaker 14: Oh, man, I'm so excited about it. It starts a
- 30:54Speaker 14: week from tonight tonight.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll have We've got a game on Metro News
- 30:57Speaker 3: TV as a matter of fact, so we're looking forward
- 30:59Speaker 3: to them.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Yep.
- 31:00Speaker 14: So there's four games I believe statewide on Thursday, a
- 31:04Speaker 14: whole slate of games on Friday night, and one on
- 31:07Speaker 14: Saturday next week, I believe week one. I mean one
- 31:11Speaker 14: thing I will say locally, I think it's going to
- 31:13Speaker 14: be more competitive because in the past several years, the
- 31:18Speaker 14: four A schools, even before there were four classifications, the
- 31:22Speaker 14: larger Triple A schools really dominated the Triple A schools,
- 31:26Speaker 14: the current Triple A schools. So I think those Triple
- 31:29Speaker 14: A schools now in the valley are going to be
- 31:31Speaker 14: much more competitive because they can schedule differently, and they've
- 31:35Speaker 14: got some Double A teams that moved up to Triple
- 31:38Speaker 14: A and it's just more competitive here in the valley.
- 31:41Speaker 3: And a little programming note for US. West Virginia State
- 31:45Speaker 3: football is back on one O seven three The Beat.
- 31:47Speaker 3: We are going to be covering West Virginia State football
- 31:50Speaker 3: on one of seven three The Beat we are going
- 31:51Speaker 3: to have our course, our Friday night football coverages we
- 31:53Speaker 3: always do. We will be well, we're going actually going
- 31:57Speaker 3: back to the Game of the Week format and then
- 31:59Speaker 3: we'll have Herbert Hoover on ninety six one KWS. It's
- 32:03Speaker 3: been a big, big thing for us the last couple
- 32:05Speaker 3: of years, so we're excited about being part of the Huskies,
- 32:07Speaker 3: and then all the other teams will will be on
- 32:09Speaker 3: WCHS as well. Texas. Ask him what he thinks about
- 32:13Speaker 3: nil in high school.
- 32:16Speaker 14: I don't think it's going to be a big deal.
- 32:18Speaker 14: I think they had to have something on the books
- 32:20Speaker 14: to manage that. But you know, in my lifetime, I've
- 32:24Speaker 14: seen a couple of athletes that would warrant some pretty
- 32:29Speaker 14: good NIL money, one being Randy Moss. Maybe another would
- 32:32Speaker 14: be Brett Nelson from Saint Albans Jr.
- 32:34Speaker 3: House Jr. House.
- 32:36Speaker 14: There's been a handful in several decades. So I don't
- 32:40Speaker 14: think that it's a big deal right now. But they
- 32:43Speaker 14: had to have something on the books.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Forty four.
- 32:45Speaker 14: I believe other states have something on their rule books, and.
- 32:48Speaker 3: The rules are as the best I understand it, and
- 32:50Speaker 3: you can correct me. I mean they if I'm if
- 32:52Speaker 3: I'm a player for and I'll just use GW for example,
- 32:56Speaker 3: I cannot appear in the GW merchandise. Is that right?
- 32:59Speaker 3: And a logo?
- 33:00Speaker 4: You know what? It's so restrictive.
- 33:01Speaker 14: That's the one other reason why I don't think it's
- 33:04Speaker 14: going to be, uh, you know, much of anything to
- 33:06Speaker 14: worry about, because you can't even have a football in
- 33:09Speaker 14: your hand. If you're a football player, you can't be
- 33:12Speaker 14: in the GW gear. You can't have you can't represent
- 33:18Speaker 14: anything that references back to what you do that has
- 33:21Speaker 14: made you famous in sports. It just has to be
- 33:24Speaker 14: your name, your image, or your likeness, not the schools,
- 33:28Speaker 14: not the sports.
- 33:28Speaker 3: All right, I got one more question here for you,
- 33:30Speaker 3: and you're a popular guy today. If WVU and Pitt
- 33:34Speaker 3: do go three and oh, do you think ESPN will
- 33:37Speaker 3: consider McAfee suggestion of Game Day coming to Morgantown for
- 33:40Speaker 3: the brawl? Two and oh? I'm sorry they correct themselves
- 33:42Speaker 3: in two and oh.
- 33:43Speaker 14: Yeah, I think, uh, bat McAfee's got a lot of influence. Yeah,
- 33:48Speaker 14: I think that's not outside the realm of possibilities.
- 33:51Speaker 3: We'll see what happens. All right, you got a big
- 33:52Speaker 3: event tonight. I want to let you go.
- 33:53Speaker 14: Yeah, if you weren't able to get your ticket to
- 33:55Speaker 14: the Marshall event, and or you're a WVU fan, you
- 33:58Speaker 14: should be at Buffalo Wild Wings, Cross Slain's tonight, Wally's
- 34:01Speaker 14: and Whimpy's Night. We have Anthony Lewis Touchdown City's going
- 34:05Speaker 14: to be there. He's gonna bring Avon Coburn, who's the
- 34:08Speaker 14: Mountaineers all time leading rusher. He's going to be a
- 34:10Speaker 14: special guest at Wally's and Whimpyes Night. And we have
- 34:13Speaker 14: some tickets we're going to give away. We have Marshall
- 34:16Speaker 14: tickets to their home opener and we're going to give
- 34:19Speaker 14: away a pair of WVU pit tickets tonight. All you
- 34:23Speaker 14: have to do is come and sign up.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Start in its six.
- 34:26Speaker 14: It starts at six and at seven point thirty. We'll
- 34:28Speaker 14: probably draw at about seven seven fifteen.

- 37:31Speaker 22: Definitely That uh feels great, Though, YEAH i like. It listen, Clean.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Yes well not that the. Leader the other one was.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Dirty oh, yeah it was all. Right there we go
- 37:40Speaker 3: back in thirty. Years it was. Retro it was. Retro all,
- 37:44Speaker 3: right let's talk about. Numbers either one of you could
- 37:45Speaker 3: just jump. In let's talk about. Numbers last, year how
- 37:47Speaker 3: many people came through the turnstiles And i'm just a,
- 37:50Speaker 3: ballpark no pun.
- 37:51Speaker 22: Intended, YEAH i like, that that's. All i'm going to
- 37:53Speaker 22: hit it out of the park. Again, Yeah, okay it was.
- 37:55Speaker 22: Over it was over one hundred and twenty thousand people,
- 37:57Speaker 22: total AND i mean within that as.
- 37:59Speaker 16: Well.
- 38:00Speaker 22: Well it's pretty cool seeing the crazy amount of places
- 38:03Speaker 22: that people came. From you, know we've talked about that
- 38:06Speaker 22: every city In West. Virginia we've talked about nearly every single,
- 38:09Speaker 22: state multiple. Countries when we were with the group from
- 38:13Speaker 22: it was a fifty person plus group.
- 38:15Speaker 3: From, japan that's.
- 38:16Speaker 22: Right when they were walking, AROUND i mean it was
- 38:18Speaker 22: they were in. Awe that was the coolest thing because
- 38:21Speaker 22: it was A monday night walking around with a huge
- 38:24Speaker 22: group from From japan visiting our, community visiting late the,
- 38:28Speaker 22: night and it was. AWESOME i, mean seventy five percent
- 38:31Speaker 22: time about how amazing light the night, was twenty five
- 38:34Speaker 22: percent about Sho Heo. Tani, yeah it's, understandable understand, too
- 38:39Speaker 22: or the two things we could talk.
- 38:40Speaker 2: ABOUT i guess there you.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Go and And, ben you, know your law firm was
- 38:44Speaker 3: was all over this stuff from day, one as you
- 38:46Speaker 3: are on various other things in the community as.
- 38:48Speaker 23: Well what'd you get out of. It, well you, know
- 38:50Speaker 23: SO i told this there that at the at the press.
- 38:53Speaker 23: Conference we get as a business, OWNER i get pitched
- 38:55Speaker 23: on sponsorships and you know things all the, time and
- 38:59Speaker 23: this is the only one where somebody pitched. Me AND
- 39:01Speaker 23: i called the next day to, say, now remember you
- 39:04Speaker 23: promised me. This you promised, me SO i knew it
- 39:08Speaker 23: was going to be a. Hit you, know this is
- 39:10Speaker 23: something That, charleston That West virginia. Needed and When andy
- 39:14Speaker 23: came up and he was kind of telling me what
- 39:16Speaker 23: the layout would look like with the ice skating, rink
- 39:19Speaker 23: AND i, SAID i am one hundred percent on.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Board you call me.
- 39:22Speaker 23: Tomorrow and THEN i ended up calling him BECAUSE i
- 39:25Speaker 23: wanted to make sure that we were. Involved And i'm
- 39:28Speaker 23: in on this until he won't let me be in.
- 39:30Speaker 23: Anymore i'm telling you BECAUSE i love. IT i love
- 39:32Speaker 23: going over there and watching people when they come.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Through how many times on average were you and the family?
- 39:38Speaker 3: There probably this?
- 39:38Speaker 23: YEAR i was there probably fifteen. Times, yeah and not
- 39:41Speaker 23: just walking around LIKE i will stand there and just
- 39:43Speaker 23: watch people when they come in or talk to. PEOPLE
- 39:46Speaker 23: i was there when the all the businessmen From japan came,
- 39:49Speaker 23: in you know that was part of a big economic
- 39:51Speaker 23: development through the state Of West. Virginia we had dinner
- 39:55Speaker 23: At university At charleston and then we brought him over
- 39:58Speaker 23: To light The night and they hadn't seen anything like that.
- 40:01Speaker 23: Before they were just completely blown. Away but it's something
- 40:04Speaker 23: that's so so big and so different than anything else
- 40:10Speaker 23: around here that's. Offered we have to include it in
- 40:14Speaker 23: like economic development, plans or even if you've got family coming,
- 40:17Speaker 23: in you, know people that haven't been here for a
- 40:19Speaker 23: few years and that come back For thanksgiving Or, christmas
- 40:22Speaker 23: make sure that they go to the.
- 40:23Speaker 3: PARK i, mean AND i talked To Tim brady about
- 40:26Speaker 3: this last year and talked to me a good one
- 40:27Speaker 3: about this as. WELL i, mean this is it's almost
- 40:30Speaker 3: Like charleston has become A christmas destination. Now you, know
- 40:33Speaker 3: you think About charleston being a summertime destination With regatta
- 40:36Speaker 3: and all the other fairs and festivals we, Have but
- 40:37Speaker 3: NOW i mean Between Hally Jolly, brawley, yes and Between
- 40:41Speaker 3: light The night and everything else that goes on to the.
- 40:44Speaker 3: CITY i, mean this has become like A christmas destination.
- 40:46Speaker 23: NOW i was walking Down Capitol street the other day
- 40:48Speaker 23: and a lady stopped me and she was, like, OH
- 40:50Speaker 23: i forget your, name but you're The christmas lights. Guy
- 40:54Speaker 23: AND i, Said i'll take. That i've been called so much.
- 40:57Speaker 23: Worse i'll Take Christmas lights as an attorney. Especially but
- 41:00Speaker 23: that's another story.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Time but and again going back TO i always look
- 41:05Speaker 3: at economic. Numbers i'm a numbers guy when it comes
- 41:09Speaker 3: to money and what it means for the city Of.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Charles so because people that come in nine times out of,
- 41:15Speaker 3: ten they don't just go to light to. Night they
- 41:18Speaker 3: go downtown and they, shop they go to a, restaurant
- 41:21Speaker 3: they have, dinner they take in all this other. Thing
- 41:23Speaker 3: so it's not just about going to looking at some shiny.
- 41:26Speaker 22: Lights well, Absolutely AND i mean with with, that you
- 41:30Speaker 22: know you talk about how The jolly probably late the,
- 41:32Speaker 22: night capital market, events everything that goes on in the.
- 41:34Speaker 22: Community they're all pretty affordable and very accessible and pretty
- 41:40Speaker 22: within distance of each. Other SO i think, that you,
- 41:43Speaker 22: know when you're looking at the numbers and looking at
- 41:44Speaker 22: the economic, IMPACT i think that those kind of anchor
- 41:48Speaker 22: events and anchor locations really allow a lot of kind
- 41:52Speaker 22: of flexibility for when people do come and. Visit when you,
- 41:55Speaker 22: Know ben mentioned it but my in laws have come
- 41:59Speaker 22: from to see my brother in, law sister in law
- 42:01Speaker 22: and nieces have come the last Two, thanksgivings AND i
- 42:04Speaker 22: mean it is an a one part of our visit
- 42:07Speaker 22: to go late the night of course every single, night
- 42:09Speaker 22: but you, know and then seeing all of the million
- 42:12Speaker 22: other things that are going on and going To Holly
- 42:14Speaker 22: Jolly brawley and having fun down there with my now
- 42:17Speaker 22: seven year old son and. BROTHER i, mean there are
- 42:18Speaker 22: just so many traditions and it's really really easy to.
- 42:21Speaker 23: Do all, right what's new for this? YEAR i think
- 42:24Speaker 23: we're gonna have more. Life we're going to have some different.
- 42:26Speaker 23: Rides some of the more popular things will still be,
- 42:28Speaker 23: there BUT i think it's going to be maybe configured
- 42:31Speaker 23: a little.
- 42:31Speaker 3: Differently. Yeah, actually you guys put out a map on
- 42:34Speaker 3: THE i think The Dirty birds did. THAT i shared
- 42:35Speaker 3: that over on my social. Media so if you want
- 42:37Speaker 3: to go see what we're talking, about go To Dave
- 42:39Speaker 3: Allen radio and you can see exactly the little map
- 42:43Speaker 3: that that you guess put on Your facebook.
- 42:44Speaker 22: Page, ANDY i, know do you think WE'RE i don't
- 42:46Speaker 22: know if we're having too much of where the font
- 42:48Speaker 22: keeps getting smaller because there's so much cool stuff going
- 42:51Speaker 22: on that you got to kind of really zoom it.
- 42:52Speaker 22: In but, well so another, thing you, know talking about
- 42:55Speaker 22: the numbers and economic, IMPACT i, mean it was really
- 42:57Speaker 22: really important for us to make this as Much West
- 43:00Speaker 22: virginia is humanly. Possible and you, Know i'll ADMIT i
- 43:03Speaker 22: didn't realize until we did some research and really started
- 43:06Speaker 22: doubling down on that commitment that there is an ice
- 43:08Speaker 22: skating rink company right here In West. Virginia SO i,
- 43:11Speaker 22: mean the rink is going to be, bigger, better and
- 43:13Speaker 22: straight From West virginia With West Virginia cruise installing. It
- 43:17Speaker 22: and that goes the same thing for.
- 43:19Speaker 3: All of our.
- 43:19Speaker 22: Lights so there's really a lot of things that we're
- 43:22Speaker 22: kind of you know now that going into year. Three
- 43:25Speaker 22: it's so cool how much you learn and so cool
- 43:27Speaker 22: how much you. Know it really consumes the planning period
- 43:30Speaker 22: where you, know, baseball it's a baseball, stadium but, man
- 43:33Speaker 22: we're talking about light the night three hundred and sixty
- 43:34Speaker 22: five days a, year all, Right and opening night Is
- 43:37Speaker 22: opening night Is november twenty, first all. Right tickets are
- 43:40Speaker 22: on sale now and tickets are available at Dirty birds
- 43:43Speaker 22: baseball dot com and Light thenight dot com get.
