- 0:24Speaker 1: is the leader in video walls. We welcome in Mike
- 0:27Speaker 1: Detilier WWL Radio TV, New Orleans. He covered Sean and
- 0:31Speaker 1: Drew from the jump every single day, every single week
- 0:35Speaker 1: through the magical time that gave us unbelievable right experiences
- 0:41Speaker 1: that we're talking about. We've been playing the audio from
- 0:44Speaker 1: Drew Brees this morning talking about it came down to
- 0:48Speaker 1: Miami and New Orleans and if Miami takes him and
- 0:52Speaker 1: the doctors don't say no, then Saban doesn't go to Alabama,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and then what does the college football and the SEC
- 0:59Speaker 1: look like? That we all love. So we bring in
- 1:01Speaker 1: Mike d on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest Line. Mike D.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We've we've had many segments with you on Drew, but
- 1:10Speaker 1: we can't do enough. What was it like right when
- 1:14Speaker 1: Drew got to know this young, young, young Drew Brees
- 1:18Speaker 1: that's trying to rehab his shoulder and boyish, good looks.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Maybe I don't know if naive is the right word,
- 1:26Speaker 1: because he's already been in the NFL and proven. But
- 1:29Speaker 1: what was it like to cover him that first year,
- 1:32Speaker 1: Mike d.
- 1:34Speaker 2: It was a lot of different features to it, you know,
- 1:40Speaker 2: having watched him and just how successful he was for
- 1:43Speaker 2: Due and then he goes to San Diego and you
- 1:48Speaker 2: know he hit some high notes there. But you eventually
- 1:52Speaker 2: once they picked Philip Rivers in round one, that he
- 1:57Speaker 2: wasn't going to stay there, that something was going to happen.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And he came in here with a chip on his shoulder. Again,
- 2:06Speaker 2: he had been through surgery that had not been done
- 2:10Speaker 2: before at that time Doctor James Andrews had done surgery,
- 2:18Speaker 2: but not on the quarterback position and coming back from that,
- 2:25Speaker 2: and so from a demeanor standpoint, he's always been a
- 2:28Speaker 2: super focused guy. He's always been the type of individual
- 2:33Speaker 2: that's going to give you everything he's got to get
- 2:37Speaker 2: back to playing. But there was a lot of uncertainty
- 2:43Speaker 2: about Drew Brees because there was no textbook about this
- 2:48Speaker 2: is how so and Sol came back from that injury
- 2:52Speaker 2: that had not happened before. And so while there was
- 2:57Speaker 2: excitement because as the team had drafted Reggie Bush, Sean
- 3:03Speaker 2: had a lot of excitement around him. Drew had a
- 3:07Speaker 2: lot of excitement around him. There was also uncertainty. And
- 3:13Speaker 2: I remember Zach Street telling me the story that you know, listen,
- 3:19Speaker 2: he said, I'm just trying to make the team at
- 3:21Speaker 2: this point, I'm a late round pick. I'm trying to
- 3:24Speaker 2: make the team. But in watching him through the first
- 3:27Speaker 2: few times, he was like, man, you know, he never
- 3:30Speaker 2: threw football more than twenty yards in trending camp. You
- 3:36Speaker 2: think about that, never threw a football more than twenty yards.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And Zach was like, Okay, I guess maybe it'll come around.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And I think it was the third preseason game. They
- 3:49Speaker 2: called the play and you know then you would be
- 3:52Speaker 2: a longer pass and Drew hid it and Zach was, Okay,
- 3:56Speaker 2: that's why we got him. That's that's why we got him.
- 4:00Speaker 2: So it was a process with it. But I'll be
- 4:03Speaker 2: honest with you, his demeanor on how he changed things
- 4:07Speaker 2: and how he reacted to everyone and everybody never really changed.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Wow.
- 4:15Speaker 2: The Drew Brees that came in and O six to
- 4:18Speaker 2: the Drew Brees when he were tired, he was the
- 4:20Speaker 2: same guy. Okay, so a little bit richer towards the end,
- 4:26Speaker 2: but that he was the same guy and his interaction
- 4:32Speaker 2: and you know, he sort of has a bit of
- 4:35Speaker 2: a dry sense of humor about it, and so you
- 4:39Speaker 2: get accustomed to, you know, his personality and just how
- 4:43Speaker 2: he reacts to certain things, and you know, he's a
- 4:47Speaker 2: guy's he's all business. Now, I'm gonna be honest. He
- 4:52Speaker 2: is all business, and he'll you know, he'll have a
- 4:56Speaker 2: little good time, you know, and that sort of thing.
- 4:59Speaker 2: But and he's all about doing what's best to get
- 5:04Speaker 2: himself better as a player. And I never thought he'd
- 5:08Speaker 2: be a coach because I thought, you know, those type
- 5:11Speaker 2: individuals sometimes they don't understand what other people go through
- 5:17Speaker 2: to struggle. And he did have his struggles. But it's
- 5:22Speaker 2: hard for a guy who is that great to teach
- 5:27Speaker 2: somebody else. Yes, okay, you can work with them and
- 5:32Speaker 2: try to help them, but it's hard to teach him
- 5:36Speaker 2: what you know, that would be like Nolan Ryan, Okay,
- 5:39Speaker 2: let me teach you how to throw a fastball. Okay,
- 5:43Speaker 2: Nolan knows how to do it and he can help
- 5:46Speaker 2: you with it, but it would be really difficult for
- 5:50Speaker 2: him and I'm glad you brought it up by Drukas.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Actually he's going to join us this afternoon on SportsTalk.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Okay, I'm jealous. I'm jealous.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he's coming on at five thirty. Glad to
- 6:06Speaker 2: have him on. And he's, uh, he's been working out,
- 6:10Speaker 2: you know, in California with Saints quarterbacks and receivers.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Oh wow, all right, Mike Detillier will have Drew Brees
- 6:20Speaker 1: on WWL Radio, New Orleans, Mike d Afternoon Drive. And
- 6:26Speaker 1: that's cool. We've interviewed some cool people. But the fact
- 6:29Speaker 1: that Mike's interviewed Drew Brees one hundred times or whatever,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I'm jealous. Okay, So with Drew year one, they got
- 6:38Speaker 1: the NFC Championship game. When did you know, Mike d
- 6:42Speaker 1: that the theme was cooking? When were you sitting up
- 6:45Speaker 1: there in the press box or on ww L where
- 6:48Speaker 1: you said, holy smokes, this team could do something really
- 6:52Speaker 1: special in year one of Drew and shown.
- 6:55Speaker 2: The first couple of games that was like, okay, there's
- 6:59Speaker 2: some momentum on this team. Really didn't know how good
- 7:03Speaker 2: they were. They had twenty nine new players on a
- 7:07Speaker 2: fifty three man roster. The thick of that. You know,
- 7:12Speaker 2: it was a new coaching staff. We didn't know a
- 7:16Speaker 2: lot about Sean Payton and his coaching staff, and it
- 7:21Speaker 2: was sort of a get to know in year one.
- 7:24Speaker 2: But I would take midway into the season he started
- 7:28Speaker 2: to have the feeling this team was really good. And
- 7:34Speaker 2: I had good thoughts early on that they could run
- 7:37Speaker 2: the ball because you know, with that combination in the
- 7:41Speaker 2: backfield of Luce McAllister and Regie Bush, that was really dynamic.
- 7:49Speaker 2: The surprise was Marcus Colston was a seventh round pick
- 7:55Speaker 2: and what he was able to do in year one.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Their offensive line played really well. The defense it was
- 8:05Speaker 2: kind of a thrown together unit and Gary Gary Gibbs
- 8:10Speaker 2: did a really good job of coordinating that defense. But
- 8:15Speaker 2: I would say it was probably midway into the season
- 8:19Speaker 2: because I mean, there are people always put this pie
- 8:21Speaker 2: in the sky stuff, but early on you really didn't
- 8:28Speaker 2: know because there were so many new elements to this
- 8:32Speaker 2: football team and how would it stay together. You know, Okay,
- 8:37Speaker 2: they got off to a hot start, but would it
- 8:40Speaker 2: be able to sustain this midway into the season, Now
- 8:45Speaker 2: Drew's cooking, they got a running game, and you saying, hey,
- 8:50Speaker 2: you know they might be pretty dull going good here
- 8:53Speaker 2: and sure enough to think that that team that had
- 8:57Speaker 2: won three games the year before, you know, goes to
- 9:01Speaker 2: the NFC Championship game. I always told this to coach Peyton.
- 9:06Speaker 2: It was the greatest coaching job he ever did in
- 9:08Speaker 2: New Orleans. It was the very best when you have
- 9:12Speaker 2: that many and you plays players on a team and
- 9:16Speaker 2: piecing that all together. I used this term two days
- 9:22Speaker 2: ago when somebody asked me to describe it. I said,
- 9:24Speaker 2: it was the first NFL nil team get to get
- 9:29Speaker 2: deep into playoffs, because you think about twenty nine or
- 9:34Speaker 2: fifty three when you guys that that's a chunk. And
- 9:40Speaker 2: boy it worked, and man, they started to believe in
- 9:44Speaker 2: themselves and started to believe in Drew. And you had
- 9:48Speaker 2: a really dynamic backfield with Druce McAllister in his prime
- 9:54Speaker 2: along with Reggie Bush.
- 9:57Speaker 1: What Mike Ntilier has been covering the Saints for forty years.
- 10:00Speaker 1: He joins us on the Out of Bounds Show. Drew
- 10:02Speaker 1: brees first ballot Hall of Famer. Y'all all know he
- 10:05Speaker 1: brought the Lombardi Trophy to New Orleans Super Bowl, Sean
- 10:09Speaker 1: Drew and so many others, And as Drew said, in
- 10:13Speaker 1: the audio that we dropped earlier. He realized that he
- 10:16Speaker 1: was going to be a part of the resurrection of
- 10:19Speaker 1: one of America's greatest cities, and the rest is history.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Football drove it, Culinary drove it, Mike lived it, and
- 10:26Speaker 1: people rallied and it was just it was increasing. They
- 10:29Speaker 1: went to the NFC Championship game in year one, Mike,
- 10:32Speaker 1: what was that first home playoff game, like, I think
- 10:36Speaker 1: against the Eagles in the Supernome.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah. Man, it was a crazy atmosphere. We were doing
- 10:42Speaker 2: pregame outside. Okay at that time in Man, the fans
- 10:49Speaker 2: was some revved up about it. And the Eagles came
- 10:52Speaker 2: in here would have bad to the bone defense. They
- 10:55Speaker 2: were really good and that game, the one thing I
- 10:59Speaker 2: remember was Dues. I mean he sort of put that
- 11:03Speaker 2: team on his back late and he carried him through
- 11:07Speaker 2: running the football. He was fantastic in that game. But
- 11:12Speaker 2: the atmosphere was electric no matter what. Because I parked,
- 11:21Speaker 2: somebody actually drove me to the game. So we actually
- 11:24Speaker 2: parked about a block and a half away from the
- 11:28Speaker 2: Dome and I had to walk, uh you know to
- 11:32Speaker 2: where we did three k man. You got stopped like
- 11:35Speaker 2: every two steps, stop two steps stopped. People were all excited.
- 11:41Speaker 2: They was some thrilled that the Saints were, you know,
- 11:47Speaker 2: in the playoffs, had an opportunity. The day before, the
- 11:54Speaker 2: NBC Nightly News did a segment on the Saints and
- 11:59Speaker 2: I got interview for it, and I'm like, man, NBC
- 12:03Speaker 2: Nightly News doing a story on the Saints, and it
- 12:07Speaker 2: went to show that, you know, I think the win,
- 12:13Speaker 2: the winning ways that the Saints got for many people
- 12:17Speaker 2: who suffered devastating losses in Katrina. It was sort of
- 12:23Speaker 2: the look beyond. You know, hey, look we difficult times
- 12:29Speaker 2: and it gave them some relief. And I think every
- 12:33Speaker 2: player that talked to you back then said the same
- 12:36Speaker 2: thing that they knew they were playing for something bigger
- 12:41Speaker 2: than just a football game. You were playing for a
- 12:44Speaker 2: community that had really been devastated in many ways, and
- 12:50Speaker 2: they wanted to give everything they had to them to
- 12:53Speaker 2: give to make them happy for a little while, and
- 12:56Speaker 2: then you know, you have to go home and try
- 12:58Speaker 2: to rebuild everything. So it was it was a crazy time.
- 13:03Speaker 2: And you know, I live sixteen miles south and to
- 13:08Speaker 2: the west of New Orleans. The community I live in,
- 13:13Speaker 2: we didn't really have much damage done for Katrina at all.
- 13:20Speaker 2: It goes to show what you know with a hurricane,
- 13:22Speaker 2: how you know you're just living a little bit away,
- 13:25Speaker 2: and how it doesn't affect you. Now, Ida was a
- 13:28Speaker 2: different story we got I got a direct hit from Aida.
- 13:32Speaker 2: But Katrina, we didn't get that. Here on the vayue
- 13:36Speaker 2: at all, are very little of it. And yet the
- 13:40Speaker 2: New Orleans and Medici community really really caught it. And
- 13:43Speaker 2: when the levees broke, that was unbelievable devastation. No matter
- 13:49Speaker 2: where you passed, you know, there were furniture and people's
- 13:53Speaker 2: you know, stuff inside their home that were outside. You know,
- 13:57Speaker 2: it damaged. You didn't have it anymore. He lost it.
- 14:02Speaker 2: So many people lost everything with it, and I think
- 14:05Speaker 2: the players felt that that, you know, hey, listen, we
- 14:07Speaker 2: planned for something a lot bigger than a football game.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Mike Detilier WWL Radio on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest Line.
- 14:18Speaker 1: He's sharing stories of the resurrection of one of America's
- 14:24Speaker 1: greatest cities, New Orleans, post Katrina, and what Drew Brees
- 14:28Speaker 1: and Sean Payton, among many many others did for the city.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Drew's going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on
- 14:35Speaker 1: August eighth, and who that nation will be partying on
- 14:40Speaker 1: that Saturday, Mike, if you could pinpoint one thing. This
- 14:44Speaker 1: is hard to do because he did so many things. Well,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but you've been around NFL people for forty years. If
- 14:52Speaker 1: you could pinpoint one thing that made Drew Brees the
- 14:57Speaker 1: quarterback that he is. What was it?
- 15:02Speaker 2: His passion for the game. I mean, I've been around
- 15:06Speaker 2: a lot of athletes, but very few of them had
- 15:11Speaker 2: his passion for what he did. I mean he put
- 15:16Speaker 2: everything he had in. He was super competitive. This was
- 15:22Speaker 2: after a practice. One time they had a little dunk
- 15:24Speaker 2: tank and so everybody would sit on that little stool
- 15:32Speaker 2: the way to get dunked, and Drew and some of
- 15:34Speaker 2: the other quarterbacks came over and man, Drew was competitive
- 15:38Speaker 2: with that. He missed it the first time completely, you know,
- 15:44Speaker 2: he missed that big section that hit. But that was
- 15:49Speaker 2: the last time he missed it. He missed it once.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Everything else. If you were sitting on there, you got
- 15:55Speaker 2: dunked because he was so upset that he had missed
- 16:02Speaker 2: it the first time. And after that, if you were
- 16:06Speaker 2: sitting up there, you were getting with He was not
- 16:11Speaker 2: gonna he was not gonna miss it, and so he
- 16:15Speaker 2: you know that that was him. He was super passionate
- 16:18Speaker 2: about it and he was listen. I think the one
- 16:23Speaker 2: thing that gets overlooked is how talented an athlete he is,
- 16:27Speaker 2: right he he was. He's a tremendous athlete. Plays pickleball today,
- 16:32Speaker 2: plays left handed because he can't really lift his right
- 16:36Speaker 2: his right arm up anymore. So he learned how to
- 16:39Speaker 2: play golf and pickleball and over his left hand, which
- 16:43Speaker 2: is just amazing. But it goes to show, uh, you know,
- 16:47Speaker 2: how Drew Brees is as a competitor, and there's nothing
- 16:53Speaker 2: you know, if you challenge him, you you in for
- 16:56Speaker 2: quite a battle. You might beat him, but you quite
- 17:01Speaker 2: a battle to do it. And that and I think
- 17:04Speaker 2: he takes that now into being a businessman that you know,
- 17:09Speaker 2: he's competitive out there and and he you know, he's
- 17:12Speaker 2: involved in so many things locally here and also out
- 17:15Speaker 2: in California. But I would say his passion for the
- 17:19Speaker 2: game is the one thing that drives him because you
- 17:22Speaker 2: know what, all his life people told him you're not
- 17:25Speaker 2: big enough. That's right, and it sticks in his head.
- 17:29Speaker 2: It's a great tennis player. He's a really good golfer.
- 17:34Speaker 2: He taught you know, he talked to us last year
- 17:37Speaker 2: about this for quite some time. We did a show
- 17:40Speaker 2: at Manning's Children's Hospital and Archie recalled him giving Drew
- 17:48Speaker 2: an award as the best quarterback in the state of Texas,
- 17:53Speaker 2: and Drew started to go off on the fact he
- 17:56Speaker 2: grew up a Texas Aggie fan. He wanted to play
- 17:59Speaker 2: for Tech to say, in Am they never offered him.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Same thing at University of Texas never offered him. And
- 18:10Speaker 2: I think you if you listened, you can almost hear
- 18:14Speaker 2: that I'm gonna show you. I'm gonna show you just
- 18:18Speaker 2: how good I am. And he did go to Purdue
- 18:21Speaker 2: it and he says, now it was you know, it's
- 18:23Speaker 2: the best thing to happen. I tell her day Bear
- 18:25Speaker 2: all the time. Okay. He was a one year quarterback
- 18:28Speaker 2: in high school and he wanted to go to LSU.
- 18:31Speaker 2: His dad was a huge LSU fan and he wanted
- 18:34Speaker 2: to go to LSU to play. LSU never offered him.
- 18:37Speaker 2: He was the last scholarship given to Northwestern State and Louisiana.
- 18:41Speaker 2: He went there and he got mentored by Joe Ferguson,
- 18:45Speaker 2: former Arkansas played in the NFL for years with Buffalo.
- 18:49Speaker 2: That would have never happened had he went to LSU.
- 18:53Speaker 2: And sometimes God put you in the right place, right time,
- 18:57Speaker 2: and for Drew, he was right place, right time to
- 19:00Speaker 2: go to Purdue. They threw the football a tremendous amount
- 19:05Speaker 2: and it honed his craft as a as a passer.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And you know then the other things that happened with
- 19:13Speaker 2: the shoulder injury, and you know that they had to
- 19:16Speaker 2: make the decision h and he knew politically when you
- 19:20Speaker 2: look at it, that when you picked Philip Urpos as
- 19:23Speaker 2: high as they did, and you know you weren't gonna stay,
- 19:27Speaker 2: you were going to have to go somewhere else. And
- 19:30Speaker 2: the fact that Miami's doctors, Randy Mullers told us the
- 19:35Speaker 2: story numerous times. He was there. He was the GM
- 19:38Speaker 2: for Nick Saban. Randy's a consultant now with the Saints,
- 19:42Speaker 2: but wasn't far a GM there with the Saints, and
- 19:46Speaker 2: he talked about, you know, doctor stole him. We can't
- 19:50Speaker 2: guarantee anything, and so they made the decision to sort
- 19:56Speaker 2: of move on, and that that changed the course of
- 20:00Speaker 2: two teams dramatically, the Dolphins and then certainly changed the
- 20:06Speaker 2: team with the Saints. And then what it did for
- 20:09Speaker 2: University of Alabama. What happened there sort of change the
- 20:15Speaker 2: outlook all the way across the board, So you know,
- 20:19Speaker 2: kind of the one domino hit the next domino to
- 20:23Speaker 2: get you out. But you know, Drew again, his impact
- 20:27Speaker 2: on this team, he's the There probably were players that were,
- 20:32Speaker 2: you know, from a talent standpoint, as talented is Drew.
- 20:36Speaker 2: But the impact he had for this community, this team,
- 20:42Speaker 2: I'm not going to live long enough to see another
- 20:44Speaker 2: one like him.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Me neither. Wow, that was that was incredible right there
- 20:50Speaker 1: over twenty minutes on Drew Brees' first ballot Pro Football
- 20:57Speaker 1: Hall of Famer, Super Bowl Lombard Trophy winner for New
- 21:02Speaker 1: Orleans and as Mike I've asked Mike this before, he
- 21:05Speaker 1: is the number one dude in Norland, Saints history and Louisiana.
- 21:09Speaker 1: And that's counting a bunch of unbelievable players in both
- 21:12Speaker 1: the Saints and LSU. But he's he's the number one dude.
- 21:16Speaker 1: And man, there's gonna be a lot of tears in
- 21:20Speaker 1: a good way. On August eighth, as people watch Sean
- 21:25Speaker 1: Payton introduce him and Drew talk about his journey.
- 21:30Speaker 2: To Yeah, it's okay. Everybody's journey is different. In the
- 21:35Speaker 2: NFL that you know, there's so many great stories, but
- 21:39Speaker 2: you know, people say, you know, what's the one thing
- 21:42Speaker 2: you take away from Drew and what he did for
- 21:44Speaker 2: the city, in the community and for the who that
- 21:48Speaker 2: Nation's all great, But if you really want to see
- 21:51Speaker 2: what type of impact he is, walk with him for
- 21:54Speaker 2: a little while somewhere.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I can't imagine, and you and you.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Feel like a cheap watchet. Stop every few seconds, you
- 22:07Speaker 2: can't take two steps. And then you you know, somebody's
- 22:11Speaker 2: stopping taking a picture of autograph and all that. And
- 22:14Speaker 2: he's he's so good about, you know, doing all those things,
- 22:18Speaker 2: and especially with kids and all, you know, and uh,
- 22:22Speaker 2: you know, and I think he's an inspiration that you
- 22:25Speaker 2: don't have to be that six foot four, two hundred.
- 22:29Speaker 1: No doubt.
- 22:30Speaker 2: What about Mike D.
- 22:32Speaker 1: That was awesome. You crushed it. Thank you so much.
- 22:37Speaker 1: We may do two or three more hits on Drew
- 22:39Speaker 1: Brees before August eighth. Have a great week, my man.
