Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi is Lisa Fox, and today we're going to talk
- 0:02Speaker 1: about a wonderful organization that helps young people through the
- 0:06Speaker 1: worst of times when they get cancer.
- 0:08Speaker 2: It's teen Cancer America.
- 0:11Speaker 1: They're a national nonprofit and national nonprofit that partners with
- 0:14Speaker 1: hospitals to build specialized facilities and provide programs for young
- 0:19Speaker 1: people fighting cancer and who are undergoing cancer treatments. They're
- 0:23Speaker 1: doing incredible work to support these kids and young adults.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And one of their big fundraisers is coming up. It's
- 0:30Speaker 1: their rock and Polo event on the West Side, happening
- 0:33Speaker 1: in the Palisade Saturday, June twentieth. Teen Canceramerica dot org
- 0:38Speaker 1: for all the info, but on to tell us all
- 0:40Speaker 1: about it is their new CEO, Shannon Sullivan. Hi Shannon,
- 0:43Speaker 1: Hi Lisa, how are you doing all right? And Tammy
- 0:46Speaker 1: Shapiro's on, Hi Tammy, Hi.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Ladies, Hi Lisa, Thank you so much for having it.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Of course, you know, I was realizing the last time
- 0:54Speaker 1: we did a big thing on the radio about this
- 0:56Speaker 1: event was with your last CEO, Shannon Simon Davis.
- 1:00Speaker 2: What a sweet, sweet man.
- 1:02Speaker 4: And he's so wonderful, still involved.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Still in vall.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Yes, he's just a little he said, he's slightly retired
- 1:10Speaker 1: but still on the board. He's got such a passion
- 1:12Speaker 1: for helping these kids. And I was like, Simon, was
- 1:15Speaker 1: the last time I had you on the radio was
- 1:16Speaker 1: at twenty twenty four.
- 1:17Speaker 2: We were in the Palisades before the fires, supporting this.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Incredible event and you know, it's the Polo events. You
- 1:24Speaker 1: have these beautiful horses, this beautiful space, and supporting kids
- 1:28Speaker 1: in these and their families and this organization. He's like, yeah,
- 1:31Speaker 1: there was twenty twenty four, so it's the first time
- 1:33Speaker 1: you've done this event since then, Huh.
- 1:36Speaker 4: It is? It is so because of the fires in
- 1:39Speaker 4: the Palisades, the polo fields and much of Will Rogers
- 1:44Speaker 4: State Park was damaged, and so we are we're so
- 1:47Speaker 4: delighted to be one of the first big charity events
- 1:50Speaker 4: back with our partners and friends at Will Rogers State Park.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Well and Tammy and I were talking off the air
- 1:56Speaker 1: and to say, you know, not to get all into it,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but I've mentioned on this show many times.
- 2:02Speaker 5: My Eric lost everything in the fires, in this whole
- 2:05Speaker 5: neighborhood and everything. So it's it's hard to go back
- 2:09Speaker 5: and have a reason to to feel good and just
- 2:12Speaker 5: smile it's hard right now. So many people are still
- 2:14Speaker 5: the displaced and still struggling. But boy, this event brings
- 2:18Speaker 5: together wonderful people and we're going to raise a ton
- 2:20Speaker 5: of money and that's got to be a great reason
- 2:22Speaker 5: to go back to the Palisades, right, It's just all
- 2:25Speaker 5: all the right reasons to go, right Shannon.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Absolutely, And and you know, Lisa, thank you for sharing
- 2:30Speaker 4: it's it is. It is devastating. And I think that
- 2:34Speaker 4: you know, when we when we thought about bringing this
- 2:36Speaker 4: event back, we really wanted it to be an opportunity
- 2:40Speaker 4: to bring people back to the Palisades for something that
- 2:43Speaker 4: was positive and fun, and you know, and to see
- 2:47Speaker 4: that there is you know, rebuilding is happening and and
- 2:51Speaker 4: you know people are coming back and that's really important.
- 2:54Speaker 4: It's really important that we come to support the Palisades.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And Tammy, I know we're going to talk about your
- 3:00Speaker 1: who you lost to cancer, Grayson in a moment, but
- 3:03Speaker 1: you also are affected by the fire. So this is
- 3:05Speaker 1: especially personal to you, not only because of us raising
- 3:08Speaker 1: money in honor of your nephew because of the cancer,
- 3:11Speaker 1: but also to go back to the Palisades.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Absolutely, I lived in the Palisades and actually currently not
- 3:18Speaker 3: living there just because of the fires. But when we
- 3:21Speaker 3: first decided to do this, it was kind of a
- 3:24Speaker 3: dual purpose. It was bringing our community back together and
- 3:27Speaker 3: people outside the community to come in and help support,
- 3:30Speaker 3: you know, Will Rogers and just the Palisades and like
- 3:34Speaker 3: Shannon was saying, come together for something very special and
- 3:39Speaker 3: we haven't been able to do in a really long time.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah, boy, I think I have a feeling we're going
- 3:43Speaker 1: to be crying all kinds of let's see thinking if
- 3:44Speaker 1: there's an open bar, right that would be in But
- 3:47Speaker 1: we're gonna well talk about.
- 3:48Speaker 2: The details of the event more than one, more than one,
- 3:51Speaker 2: many multiple open bars for a good cause. Of course.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Shannon as a newer CEO with Team Cancer America, were
- 3:59Speaker 1: you involved with their organization before you took over?
- 4:02Speaker 2: Tell me your personal connection with them, you.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Know, thanks for asking. So I knew of the charity.
- 4:08Speaker 4: I mean, who who didn't know about Team Cancer America
- 4:11Speaker 4: with their rock star roots and the incredible work that
- 4:16Speaker 4: they do for young people, and so the charity certainly
- 4:21Speaker 4: has a great reputation, and I was so thrilled to
- 4:25Speaker 4: be selected as the you know, the CEO to take
- 4:28Speaker 4: over for Simon he retired after thirteen years after starting
- 4:32Speaker 4: the charity for teen years ago, and we've had an
- 4:34Speaker 4: amazing impact, you know, since he started the charity, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 4: from very very humble beginnings and now we have helped
- 4:42Speaker 4: establish comprehensive care programs for young people with seventy three
- 4:47Speaker 4: of the top health systems across the country.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Look at that.
- 4:51Speaker 4: So it's an amazing it's an amazing success story. But
- 4:53Speaker 4: we have a lot more work to do, and that's
- 4:55Speaker 4: why events like Rock and Polo are so important.
- 5:00Speaker 2: And for folks who don't know, this organization was founded.
- 5:02Speaker 1: By Rock and Roll Royalty, Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend
- 5:06Speaker 1: of the Who and their passion for helping these young people.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Touch on that, Shannon, because I really love that story
- 5:14Speaker 1: because you think, oh, big rock stars, you know, they're
- 5:16Speaker 1: getting up there a little bit too, but helping young
- 5:19Speaker 1: people is like a top priority for them, and then
- 5:22Speaker 1: they bring in all their friends and it has this
- 5:24Speaker 1: massive support for the music community as well, which makes
- 5:26Speaker 1: it cool for the kids to feel like, wow, these
- 5:29Speaker 1: rock stars want to help or raise money and help
- 5:32Speaker 1: me get through my cancer. So touch on why it's
- 5:35Speaker 1: so important to Roger and Pete of The Who and
- 5:38Speaker 1: all their other rock star friends to help these young
- 5:40Speaker 1: people fight cancer.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Yes, you so, Roger and Pete. Their support for Team
- 5:46Speaker 4: Cancer America actually dates back to when they twenty five
- 5:51Speaker 4: thirty years ago in the UK when they were involved
- 5:54Speaker 4: in a charity called the Teenage Cancer Trust, which does
- 5:57Speaker 4: very similar mission in the UK, and as they were
- 6:01Speaker 4: touring the United States, they said, we must bring this
- 6:05Speaker 4: program to the States. We must bring this program. We
- 6:08Speaker 4: have to help teens and young adults diagnosed with cancer
- 6:10Speaker 4: in the United States. And they felt so they felt
- 6:13Speaker 4: so much passion for this that they created the charity
- 6:17Speaker 4: and that's what we've been doing.
- 6:19Speaker 2: And sad that it's so needed. But talk about how
- 6:22Speaker 2: teen cancer in America, you know, tailor's the care.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So to speak to young people, how is it different?
- 6:28Speaker 1: You know, how do you do what you do to
- 6:30Speaker 1: help young people fighting cancer? You know it's different for
- 6:34Speaker 1: people of different age groups. But you know, let's talk
- 6:36Speaker 1: about how it's specialized to help teens through it, teens
- 6:40Speaker 1: and young adults, you know, speaking to that demographic. I mean,
- 6:43Speaker 1: it's hard enough to just be a darned teenager and
- 6:46Speaker 1: then to have to deal with cancer. On top of that,
- 6:49Speaker 1: you know, you're already might be acne, maybe get your
- 6:52Speaker 1: first girlfriend or first boyfriend, you've got hormones or exploding.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I mean, it's your body's changing. There's already lots.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Going on in your body when you're a teenager, and
- 7:01Speaker 1: then have to deal with this on top of that,
- 7:03Speaker 1: it is.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Just h you know this. The age group that we
- 7:06Speaker 4: deal with is fifteen year olds to thirty nine year olds,
- 7:09Speaker 4: and so when you think about all the transitions that
- 7:13Speaker 4: people in these age groups are going through, You're entering
- 7:16Speaker 4: high school, you're entering college, you're getting into your first job,
- 7:21Speaker 4: you're dating, and maybe having a family, and a cancer
- 7:26Speaker 4: diagnosis during this time is devastating. And so what our
- 7:30Speaker 4: programs do is we really provide extra care and support
- 7:37Speaker 4: and services for teens and young adults with cancer. And
- 7:40Speaker 4: so what are those services? Well, number one, we want
- 7:43Speaker 4: to make sure that the doctors and the nurses and
- 7:45Speaker 4: health care professionals that are taking care of patients actually
- 7:49Speaker 4: understand the ages and stages of young people that they're
- 7:53Speaker 4: dealing with. They're not children, they're not sixty five year olds.
- 7:58Speaker 4: They have a different mindset and have you know, need
- 8:01Speaker 4: to be treated differently. We also want to make sure
- 8:03Speaker 4: that we're having fertility conversations, so critical years for preserving fertility,
- 8:08Speaker 4: and that's that's a really important part of what we do.
- 8:11Speaker 4: And then mental health. There's so many issues around mental
- 8:16Speaker 4: health when you're going through treatment and especially after treatment,
- 8:19Speaker 4: and so it's very important that mental health support is available.
- 8:23Speaker 4: So these are all sort of hallmarks of the programs
- 8:25Speaker 4: that we helped to start.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And yeah, and you both are local gals, Southern California gals.
- 8:31Speaker 1: What Shannon, what are some of the hospitals that we
- 8:33Speaker 1: partner with here locally in Southern California.
- 8:35Speaker 4: So UCLA was one of our very first adoless and
- 8:39Speaker 4: young adult comprehensive care programs. And you know, in addition
- 8:42Speaker 4: to UCLA, we're also in early conversations with a number
- 8:46Speaker 4: of other hospitals in the Greater LA area. Okay, so
- 8:51Speaker 4: it's yeah, so it's wonderful. And listen, we want every
- 8:54Speaker 4: we want all the hospitals to have Cancer America programs.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yeah, to againd cater to this special group absolutely of
- 9:01Speaker 1: folks going through this. And Tammy Shapiro who's also on
- 9:05Speaker 1: with us. Tammy, share your story as to how you
- 9:08Speaker 1: got connected with Team Cancer America. You're connected with them
- 9:11Speaker 1: because of the story as to what happened with your
- 9:14Speaker 1: nephew Grayson.
- 9:15Speaker 3: So two days after he turned fifteen, he was diagnosed
- 9:19Speaker 3: with pancreatic cancer, which is particularly unheard of in a
- 9:22Speaker 3: young person. Yeah, it's just hearts thinking and he sadly
- 9:29Speaker 3: passed away after only eleven months. But Shannon with Shannon,
- 9:33Speaker 3: I know what she was just mentioning is exactly what
- 9:37Speaker 3: we experienced in those eleven months, in that short journey.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Was the healthcare support really lacked in his age group demographic?
- 9:47Speaker 4: Really?
- 9:47Speaker 3: Yeah? And so here he.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Is he you know, he's playing sports, playing video games
- 9:52Speaker 1: and have fifteen year old guy trying to you know,
- 9:56Speaker 1: get ready for high school. And then what did he
- 9:59Speaker 1: start having symptoms? How did we find out.
- 10:01Speaker 2: He had this rare form of cancer, pancreatic cancer.
- 10:06Speaker 3: So he had a rash on his arm. Yeah, he
- 10:08Speaker 3: had a rash on his arms, and my sister took
- 10:11Speaker 3: him to the dermatologist. And with pancreatic cancer, that's really
- 10:16Speaker 3: the problem with it, why there's such a low rate
- 10:18Speaker 3: of survival is you don't really know you have it.
- 10:22Speaker 3: The signs aren't there until it's already age four and
- 10:25Speaker 3: metastasized yet.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Yeah, so they saw the rash and they're like, oh,
- 10:29Speaker 1: wait a minute, wait a minute, there's something going on.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah. The dermatologists immediately told her to go to the
- 10:34Speaker 3: to the hospital, into urgent care or one of those,
- 10:37Speaker 3: and they did an ultrasound and there was a large tumor.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I mean, my sister called me, you know, in those moments,
- 10:46Speaker 3: he found a large tumor on his pancreas and I
- 10:48Speaker 3: just couldn't believe my ears. And from that second I
- 10:54Speaker 3: haven't left their side. And you know, here we are.
- 10:59Speaker 3: We just had two year anniversary of his passing. It
- 11:02Speaker 3: feels like yesterday, but we're not stopping with helping and
- 11:08Speaker 3: keeping his name alive. And just last week, yeah, last Thursday,
- 11:13Speaker 3: he would have graduated with his with his class, graduated
- 11:16Speaker 3: high school. He should have been walking that stage, I know,
- 11:20Speaker 3: with all of his friends and his teammates.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And you've created the Grayson Briggs Tribute Fund with Teen
- 11:27Speaker 1: Cancer America. Talk about how that's going to help you.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Maybe not cry less, but maybe I feel like, you know,
- 11:34Speaker 1: we're going to fight on behalf of Grayson. Right, Let's
- 11:36Speaker 1: fight on his behalf and in his name and do
- 11:39Speaker 1: things to help other kids.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Right, nothing has ever been more fulfilling. My sister and
- 11:43Speaker 3: I are doing this hand in hand along with Shannon
- 11:47Speaker 3: and Michelle and the other teen cancer staff and this.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Without this, I'm telling you, I don't know what we
- 11:53Speaker 3: would have done. And we are creating the most exciting day.
- 11:57Speaker 3: And we are choosing to celebrate him turning eighteen and
- 12:00Speaker 3: his graduation from high school in the way that he
- 12:04Speaker 3: would have wanted us to, which is half fun. And
- 12:08Speaker 3: we have a lot of people from you know, a
- 12:10Speaker 3: lot of his friends coming and tons of family and
- 12:13Speaker 3: it's going to be a celebration. And I mean, Billy
- 12:17Speaker 3: Idol is performing. Can you believe it?
- 12:19Speaker 2: What's no way? We love Billy Idol. Come on, he's
- 12:22Speaker 2: the best. He's going to be at the Rock and
- 12:24Speaker 2: Pollo event.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Yes, what, Shannon?
- 12:26Speaker 2: You did not even mention that? How did you bury
- 12:28Speaker 2: the lead there? Missy?
- 12:30Speaker 1: How did you not mention?
- 12:31Speaker 2: How do you.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Gloss over Billy Idol's performing at the Rock and Polo
- 12:34Speaker 1: event on you twentieth?
- 12:36Speaker 4: We have to keep some mystery here, my gosh.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Well, now we're going to help the sucker sell out
- 12:41Speaker 1: immediately Billy Happy live.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Wow, that is really cool.
- 12:46Speaker 1: We hosted an event with him, Well he's everywhere, but
- 12:49Speaker 1: we hosted an event with him a while back. I'm
- 12:51Speaker 1: out at Marongo and just what a sweetheart of a man.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And I love how much he loves helping people and
- 12:58Speaker 1: young people. So and of course I'm sure he's dear
- 13:00Speaker 1: friends with Roger and you know Pete Townsend who and
- 13:04Speaker 1: involved for all the right reasons.
- 13:05Speaker 2: So that'll that'd be great. That's going to help us
- 13:07Speaker 2: out right away. I love that. I love it, Oh,
- 13:09Speaker 2: for sure, for sure a year.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Yeah, what I'll say about Billie Idol, he has been
- 13:16Speaker 4: an ambassador to Team Cancer America for a number of
- 13:19Speaker 4: years and it's so incredibly generous to our organization. So
- 13:22Speaker 4: it is very very special that he's performing and and
- 13:26Speaker 4: I know that. Yeah, and I and he's also known
- 13:29Speaker 4: Roger and Pete for decades, so yes, it feels very
- 13:31Speaker 4: full circle.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Tell me what high school would your nephew have graduated from?
- 13:36Speaker 2: Is it a local, local high school?
- 13:38Speaker 3: Actually it wasn't local. It was my sister lives in Scottsdale, Arizona,
- 13:43Speaker 3: So he went to Pinnacle High School. Got it, And yeah,
- 13:47Speaker 3: but they spend their summers with me. These are like
- 13:50Speaker 3: my kids, you know. My nephews are like my kids,
- 13:53Speaker 3: so they they think of themselves as part California. But yeah,
- 13:59Speaker 3: a lot of people.
- 14:00Speaker 2: From Marizona will be coming down as well, a very close,
- 14:03Speaker 2: close family.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Let's talk about the rundown of this event that we
- 14:06Speaker 1: want everyone to buy a ticket for, especially well, of
- 14:09Speaker 1: course for a great cause, but hey, it's going to
- 14:11Speaker 1: get us back into the beautiful will Rogers Park and
- 14:13Speaker 1: the Palisades, back with the horses. We get to where
- 14:16Speaker 1: we're doing big hats again. Right, We're gonna wear the
- 14:19Speaker 1: big fun hats. Right, We're doing the polo rock and
- 14:22Speaker 1: polo clothing attire like the movie Pretty Woman. Pretty Woman
- 14:26Speaker 1: vibes during the polo scene.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Yeah, of course, I hope you're planning your outfit. Addresses
- 14:32Speaker 4: got to look really cute.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Okay, so polo attire.
- 14:36Speaker 1: We'll be back in the Palisades, coming together on a
- 14:39Speaker 1: beautiful Saturday afternoon. Let's say run down how the day
- 14:42Speaker 1: is going to work, Shannon. When folks go to teen
- 14:44Speaker 1: Canceramerica dot org to buy tickets for the rock and
- 14:48Speaker 1: polo with Billie Idol and Steve Stevens performing Saturday June twentieth.
- 14:53Speaker 2: What time does it all start?
- 14:55Speaker 1: And then Timmy, we'll talk about what we're gonna do
- 14:57Speaker 1: in honor of your nephew Grayson at the event.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Great. So, the event starts at twelve thirty on Saturday,
- 15:04Speaker 4: June twentieth, and again it's at will Rogers Polo Field
- 15:07Speaker 4: in the in Pacific Palisades, and we have polo events
- 15:12Speaker 4: going on, and we have music and entertainment and it
- 15:16Speaker 4: ends at about five thirty pm.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And we've got a live DJ, we've got food, we've
- 15:20Speaker 1: got open bars all over the place. And the auction,
- 15:24Speaker 1: the silent auction that's super cool and I remember from
- 15:27Speaker 1: a last time that's also going to help raise a
- 15:29Speaker 1: ton of money.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Of course, we have beautiful silent auction items. I'll have
- 15:34Speaker 4: Tammy and Michelle talk about that.
- 15:37Speaker 1: In addition to polo on a beautiful day in the Palisades,
- 15:40Speaker 1: back in the Palisades for this event, Billy Idle and
- 15:43Speaker 1: Steve Stevens performing polo matches and incredible auction items that
- 15:49Speaker 1: also help raise a ton of money for teen Cancer America.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Michelle, Well, we have Cabo Nights days, we have we
- 15:58Speaker 3: have El Perdido Hotel in Total Santos. We honestly have
- 16:03Speaker 3: the most curated, incredible items that are wellness and beauty
- 16:08Speaker 3: and vacations and gosh, it's hard for me to roll
- 16:12Speaker 3: off the top of my head. Let me see. Michelle's
- 16:14Speaker 3: helping me out. We have Valentino handbag from Release Walker.
- 16:18Speaker 3: We have very cool lid row hats. Everything is really
- 16:23Speaker 3: if I had a list of my favorite things, it's
- 16:25Speaker 3: my favorite things.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Everything on the table.
- 16:28Speaker 3: There's dot Dodger seats and all the stuff. Yeah, it's
- 16:32Speaker 3: going to be an awesome auction.
- 16:33Speaker 1: And then, ladies, when folks go to teen Cancer America
- 16:36Speaker 1: dot org for this big event, how are we looking
- 16:38Speaker 1: for ticket prices?
- 16:40Speaker 3: What's the range? Which is yes, a very reasonably so
- 16:45Speaker 3: much offered. Yes, and I think you got to get
- 16:48Speaker 3: a parking pass for twenty five dollars on top of that,
- 16:52Speaker 3: or Uber, which we recommend since you're going to be
- 16:54Speaker 3: having so much fun inside the event.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Yep, yep.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Now, there's also other categories to purchase tickets in. They're
- 17:00Speaker 3: p seeds as well as picnic table seeds. But you
- 17:04Speaker 3: can go on the website and see what the categories are.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And I like that the polo, right. I mean, the
- 17:10Speaker 1: horses are having a good time. It's short and sweet.
- 17:12Speaker 2: You know.
- 17:12Speaker 1: At first, I'm like, oh, I don't know about these horses.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Are they they're gonna keep him out her old day?

- 17:23Speaker 1: the horses. It's fun for us to watch. It's not
- 17:26Speaker 1: something that we're doing all the time. So it's really
