- 0:09Speaker 1: Right, one Bad Hire stole all of.
- 0:11Speaker 4: It crazy stuff.
- 0:13Speaker 3: She got what she deserved.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Oh, I'm your host, Ken Monroe, and every week we
- 0:19Speaker 1: dive into real life stories from the wild world of
- 0:22Speaker 1: work and what can happen when the wrong person gets
- 0:26Speaker 1: the job. These stories aren't just crazy when they're cautionary
- 0:30Speaker 1: tales about lessons learned the hard way. Let's get started. Hi, everyone,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Bad Hire.
- 0:37Speaker 5: Welcome.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Hi.
- 0:39Speaker 1: You know this is the show. This is the show
- 0:40Speaker 1: where the best stories happen about the worst employees, or
- 0:45Speaker 1: maybe the employees having the worst day ever. So you know,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'm back with Nathan and Emma. How are you guys doing.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Welcome. I'm good.
- 0:54Speaker 5: I was just saying I'm fine, good.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I'm fine. It's been a long day, you know.
- 0:59Speaker 5: Yeah, we have a record love content.
- 1:00Speaker 1: She's repping state today. Go back.
- 1:05Speaker 5: Your brother's there, right, yep, yep, cool?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Right now.
- 1:07Speaker 1: My my my daughter was there. My sister would have
- 1:11Speaker 1: freaked out of she she's a.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I went there. My brother's there, really.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Yeah, there was no, did you have a choice? Honestly, yeah,
- 1:25Speaker 1: did you want to go any place else? Uh?
- 1:31Speaker 2: Well yes, but at the time, not for like what
- 1:35Speaker 2: I wanted to do at the time, because I wanted.
- 1:38Speaker 5: To be a vet and so I wanted.
- 1:41Speaker 1: That was like, you went to State initially to be
- 1:43Speaker 1: a vet. Yes, she's still afraid to say that in
- 1:46Speaker 1: front of me. She's afraid of the rabbit hole.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Little go do Well, That's how I was with Virginia Attack.
- 1:54Speaker 5: We don't talk about animal.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I went to Virginia Tech, just like I grew
- 2:00Speaker 4: up watching Animal Planet and I was like, how hard
- 2:03Speaker 4: can that be?
- 2:03Speaker 5: And then like I went to study it and I
- 2:05Speaker 5: was like, oh, that's pretty hard.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I would tell you communications instead.
- 2:09Speaker 5: I'll just play frisbee and do a bunch of marketing.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I would tell you why I wanted to be a vet,
- 2:13Speaker 2: but I'm not going to get into all that because
- 2:15Speaker 2: then can I'll start making fun of me.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I don't make fun of you, And then I just.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Don't want to get into it. I wanted to be
- 2:21Speaker 2: a vet up until my junior year.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Of high school, and then you know, I love your
- 2:25Speaker 1: back room.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I worked in an animal hospital and you've come a
- 2:31Speaker 2: long way that it was really eye opening, and that
- 2:33Speaker 2: made me realize that I just didn't I didn't want.
- 2:36Speaker 1: To do that. That's good, that's good. You know you
- 2:39Speaker 1: should when you're young, as you get in there, when
- 2:41Speaker 1: you know you have a dream, you should get.
- 2:42Speaker 2: In the experience. I think that was like right before
- 2:45Speaker 2: I started touring colleges too. So even even then at
- 2:50Speaker 2: the time when I toured State, I didn't like it
- 2:52Speaker 2: as much as the other campuses that I had toured,
- 2:55Speaker 2: But I ended up really really liking it because it
- 2:57Speaker 2: was I think it was because it was so big
- 3:00Speaker 2: that I was like kind of overwhelmed because I'm not
- 3:02Speaker 2: used to that kind of area and everything like that.
- 3:04Speaker 4: But we're talking about NC state by the way, Yes, states.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Every see every state, and everybody was list in every
- 3:12Speaker 1: state they were talking about is like state, everybody's got
- 3:14Speaker 1: a state. Oh yeah state.
- 3:16Speaker 4: I went to Virginia Tech, and in Virginia everybody knows that.
- 3:18Speaker 4: But then I moved to California and nobody even like
- 3:21Speaker 4: heard of Virginia Tech.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Right, you know what I mean? I know that the
- 3:24Speaker 5: state out there.
- 3:25Speaker 1: It means something different than every every every state.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I graduated oh my goodness, almost two years ago.
- 3:32Speaker 5: So growing up.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm old and whatever.
- 3:36Speaker 1: It's her first job, right and she's crushing it. Right
- 3:42Speaker 1: handles our social media handles, some of some of the
- 3:46Speaker 1: things she's doing doing a lot of the podcast work.
- 3:49Speaker 5: A bunch of design stuff.
- 3:51Speaker 1: That was a good hire. Oh yeah, I think we
- 3:55Speaker 1: should throw every once in a while, throwing it like
- 3:56Speaker 1: a good higher, just like this is a bad high,
- 4:00Speaker 1: but like every once in a while, just to like
- 4:01Speaker 1: a cross out writing good, we'll tell you.
- 4:04Speaker 2: But sometimes you get people like Emma, and then yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 1: She's a bad hire gone good.
- 4:12Speaker 5: She really turned her life around from her.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And there's the redemption story. We'll tell you about her story.
- 4:21Speaker 2: She came here, I wasn't even in I wasn't even
- 4:24Speaker 2: in marketing when I came here either.
- 4:25Speaker 1: You weren't they brought in in the I mean, she
- 4:28Speaker 1: was brought in in the tech department.
- 4:30Speaker 4: But you're not the only one. Like a lot of
- 4:33Speaker 4: moved around, you know, for people.
- 4:34Speaker 2: We don't forget that because even in college I changed
- 4:37Speaker 2: my major like five times.
- 4:38Speaker 5: No mean too.
- 4:39Speaker 2: The fact that I'm not even in my major right
- 4:41Speaker 2: now doesn't surprise me.
- 4:42Speaker 4: I think that's a common marketing thing where well do
- 4:44Speaker 4: you love what? Do you like what you're doing?
- 4:45Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:45Speaker 2: I like marketing? Yeah?
- 4:47Speaker 1: Do you love it? Or you just like it?
- 4:49Speaker 2: I just like it.
- 4:50Speaker 1: It's a lot of work. Oh my god, I just
- 4:53Speaker 1: like it talking to the here's the only company? Do
- 4:57Speaker 1: you love your job?
- 4:59Speaker 5: You know?
- 5:00Speaker 2: Would you rather?
- 5:02Speaker 1: No?
- 5:02Speaker 4: I don't ever want that'd be bad behavior. And you
- 5:06Speaker 4: know you're good hiring.
- 5:08Speaker 2: It's just not what I expected. It's like every day.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Every day is like a learning experience, which is good.
- 5:13Speaker 1: But yeah, you know, well you're you're you're crafty and
- 5:17Speaker 1: thoughtful and a great writer and also gifted and designed
- 5:22Speaker 1: just kind of by accident, not by accident, but well yeah, because.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I grew up doing design stuff and I did want
- 5:28Speaker 2: to do that for a little bit too. I just
- 5:30Speaker 2: didn't go.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Just I'm hopeful that you will find your path here
- 5:34Speaker 1: in a way that makes you very happy.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I'm doing Yeah, I'm doing it in different ways.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 4: So if you found our podcast through social media, it's
- 5:44Speaker 4: because it's putting out there and yeah, we're getting seen
- 5:48Speaker 4: on TikTok and YouTube and stuff like that.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And so you see somebody being snappy or funny and
- 5:52Speaker 2: the replies it's me.
- 5:56Speaker 4: If you're if you're saying in the comments, and we
- 6:00Speaker 4: we snap back at you.
- 6:01Speaker 5: That's that's all. I'm a yes, who do you think
- 6:03Speaker 5: you're talking to?
- 6:04Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, all right, we don't forget we were
- 6:07Speaker 1: running that ten thousand dollars contest. We always should have
- 6:09Speaker 1: mentioned that before we get started.
- 6:10Speaker 5: We've a couple of submissions today that we're reading.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Okay, super cool, We're going to see a couple So
- 6:13Speaker 1: we got some submissions we're going to read, and I
- 6:16Speaker 1: think we've got a one of the video segments. So
- 6:19Speaker 1: if you want to get on the show, you want
- 6:21Speaker 1: your a story told, you have some story that you'd
- 6:24Speaker 1: like to tell, there's a couple of ways to do it.
- 6:26Speaker 1: You can submit it online. You can go to the
- 6:28Speaker 1: badhire dot com and do it. You can producers an
- 6:31Speaker 1: email over to producers at the badhire dot com. But
- 6:35Speaker 1: you know what you'll find is probably you'll get right
- 6:37Speaker 1: into a process where one of our booking guy will
- 6:40Speaker 1: give you a call. He'll reach out to you, try
- 6:43Speaker 1: to try to get a few minutes with you, talk
- 6:44Speaker 1: to you on the phone, and then book a slot
- 6:46Speaker 1: for you to have like an individual private segment where
- 6:49Speaker 1: you know, one of the producers of the show, Nathan
- 6:53Speaker 1: Emma Morgan, will then you know, potentially interview you and
- 6:59Speaker 1: do the segment live you know, recorded rather and then
- 7:02Speaker 1: we'll roll in the clips during the show and watch.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And so we've been building those up and kind of
- 7:07Speaker 1: putting those in the bank, and we're starting to you know,
- 7:09Speaker 1: I think this this show, we're gonna do one for
- 7:11Speaker 1: the first time, So I'm excited about that.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:13Speaker 4: No, I've recorded a handful of them so far, and
- 7:16Speaker 4: I know, you know, they might be distributed around the team.
- 7:18Speaker 1: You've been some interesting people, bro, It's been really fun.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I mean, just like first just the salt of the
- 7:23Speaker 1: Earth kind of recruiters that are just getting the job
- 7:26Speaker 1: done every day. And then you had that the one
- 7:28Speaker 1: dude who's like a former band manager.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Yeah, like super cool.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, I think I think we're gonna be putting
- 7:34Speaker 4: out if we haven't already, by this one comes out
- 7:36Speaker 4: like the full our full conversation with him, super interesting,
- 7:40Speaker 4: super nice, has lots of stories, but also has lots
- 7:43Speaker 4: of cool experiences. And so it's been fun because I
- 7:46Speaker 4: think our general premise of the show has rained true
- 7:48Speaker 4: with people. We're like, hey, we just noticed if you're
- 7:51Speaker 4: in recruiting, you got a story. And everybody I tell
- 7:54Speaker 4: that too, they're all like, oh yeah, I've got.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Yeah most most of the time. Yeah, So it's been fun.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Well, and you know, I hope there gets to be.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I think it's a bit therapeutic for people, you know,
- 8:05Speaker 1: I mean to be able to just tell because the
- 8:08Speaker 1: overwhelming majority of like hoop recruiters, HR folks, owners, whatever,
- 8:15Speaker 1: higher probably the overwhelm majority is good hires. Right, You
- 8:18Speaker 1: just these bad hires happen, and you know, you can
- 8:22Speaker 1: make light of them a little bit, and because all
- 8:24Speaker 1: the things we do, all the process you put in place,
- 8:27Speaker 1: are all to try to avoid those things, right, And
- 8:29Speaker 1: then so you know, God bless the HR folks recruiters
- 8:34Speaker 1: who you know, their DNA's all over this and they
- 8:38Speaker 1: but they all got a story seys for I hope
- 8:40Speaker 1: they'll tell them and we'll we'll pick the best one
- 8:44Speaker 1: this year and give them ten thousand dollars because we
- 8:45Speaker 1: think they're that we think they're they're that good, one
- 8:48Speaker 1: of those huge absolutely yeah. Fun.
- 8:51Speaker 4: It might cost eight thousand dollars to print that, right,
- 8:53Speaker 4: but it will be worth it depending.
- 8:55Speaker 1: On where they're from. They fly them here, yeah, or
- 8:58Speaker 1: we'll go there.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Yeah, it'll be fun, you know. So hopefully they're in Hawaiian.
- 9:02Speaker 1: All right, I'll kick us. I'll kick us off today. Okay,
- 9:05Speaker 1: So this, this story is uh, this this it was
- 9:07Speaker 1: a submitted.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Let me see yours. I don't think yours was. That's
- 9:11Speaker 5: what this is one that we found.
- 9:13Speaker 1: All right, So the cranky candidate that there's one thing
- 9:16Speaker 1: that truly is scary, and that's an unheedged candidate bent
- 9:20Speaker 1: on revenge. Once upon a time, I forgot to send
- 9:24Speaker 1: a Canada calendar invite for an interview. It was a
- 9:27Speaker 1: simple mistake. I totally get that, one that anyone could
- 9:30Speaker 1: have made. Before I had the chance to reach out
- 9:33Speaker 1: and apologize, she took it upon herself to call me
- 9:36Speaker 1: and berate me for this, for my error. That's quick, Okay,
- 9:41Speaker 1: I'm trying to get a job with you. Let me
- 9:43Speaker 1: berate you. Not only did she think it was clearly
- 9:46Speaker 1: an an intentional mistake on my part. Okay, so she
- 9:49Speaker 1: thought she was being slighted, but she felt the need
- 9:52Speaker 1: to threaten to reach out to my supervisor and the
- 9:55Speaker 1: CEO to get me fired. The angry candidate then did
- 9:58Speaker 1: a research. She found the email to all the companies
- 10:01Speaker 1: upper management, including the CEO, founder, some practice managers. She
- 10:05Speaker 1: sent a scathing review demanding I be fired immediately. Not
- 10:10Speaker 1: only that, shocked she chose, she chose to use some
- 10:15Speaker 1: non PC names in terms to describe me. What's totally toxic. Fortunately,
- 10:20Speaker 1: my company's management forgave me for the invite. For the invite,
- 10:25Speaker 1: I guess, I don't know, pat on the back for
- 10:28Speaker 1: putting up with this, and decided it was the candidate
- 10:31Speaker 1: that was crazy scary, so we took so we took
- 10:34Speaker 1: her out of our database. Wow, okay, So another conting.
- 10:37Speaker 2: She like she stalked him and got all this dirt
- 10:41Speaker 2: on him, and then she sent it.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Well she she just like went down and found all
- 10:45Speaker 1: the emails to all the people, and then and then
- 10:49Speaker 1: and then, I don't know.
- 10:52Speaker 5: So let's let's actually go through her plan.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Let's say she does this successfully and gets that person out,
- 10:57Speaker 4: she gets the job, and she's like, all right, we
- 10:59Speaker 4: got that interviewer out, but you just like literally, you know,
- 11:02Speaker 4: in a super toxic way, called her out, and now
- 11:04Speaker 4: you want to start your job off that way? Like
- 11:07Speaker 4: not really a great plan either way, you know what
- 11:08Speaker 4: I mean? Oh yeah, when I blackmailed, Well, how did
- 11:15Speaker 4: you get here? Oh yeah, I just threadned to the
- 11:17Speaker 4: person who forgot my calendar invite.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Well, if you think about recruiting, you know, you you
- 11:23Speaker 1: cast a wide debt, draw a lot of people, and
- 11:25Speaker 1: review the resumes, call it down, have interviews, call it down,
- 11:29Speaker 1: get down to a single person. Right, That's the way
- 11:31Speaker 1: a lot of it's done right. And you know, if you,
- 11:35Speaker 1: if you, and regardless of the process, you get down.
- 11:38Speaker 1: And then there was more than one. So the recruiter's
- 11:41Speaker 1: life is hurting people's feelings more often than making people happy.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I mean sorry, you know they'll say they get down
- 11:50Speaker 1: to three four, you know, there's three or four people,
- 11:53Speaker 1: uh that are going to be upset when the one
- 11:56Speaker 1: is the role. And so they live they live the
- 11:59Speaker 1: life delivering disappointment on top of like you know, the
- 12:03Speaker 1: one person's super happy, they're you know, and they're like, yeah,
- 12:06Speaker 1: it's so awesome, and then they got to like, oh,
- 12:08Speaker 1: I gotta go tell.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Five people that's true. Like I guess I did think
- 12:10Speaker 5: about that.
- 12:11Speaker 4: That for every job and somebody who's trying to fill
- 12:13Speaker 4: that job, it's ninety percent bad news to all the
- 12:16Speaker 4: people that are involved, and then it's that one little
- 12:19Speaker 4: small percentage of the good news that one person gets
- 12:22Speaker 4: the job.
- 12:22Speaker 5: That stuff.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Everybody goes home crying it but one, Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Which I'm sure that's a really fulfilling moment when they
- 12:28Speaker 4: get to deliver that good news when it works out.
- 12:30Speaker 4: But that's a lot of a lot of letdown along
- 12:32Speaker 4: the way. I guess that's hard, all.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Right, Before we dive back into the chaos on the
- 12:37Speaker 1: bad hire, this episode is brought to you by be Checks.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Hiring shouldn't feel like rolling the dice. Background checks should
- 12:43Speaker 1: come with great tech, seamless integration and customer service that delivers.
- 12:49Speaker 1: That's be checks, lightning fast results, unmatched accuracy, built in
- 12:53Speaker 1: fraud prevention. We help you hire the right people now.

- 13:01Speaker 1: S and ATS systems, so your background checks run smooth,
- 13:05Speaker 1: fast and back by top level service. Protect your team,
- 13:09Speaker 1: protect your reputation, protect yourself ex dot io.
- 13:18Speaker 5: Okay, let me do my story first.
- 13:20Speaker 4: That was through one of these calls, these virtual calls
- 13:23Speaker 4: with one of the virtual guests. Yeah, so this is
- 13:27Speaker 4: Sheila and she just retired, but she actually used to
- 13:31Speaker 4: work for Zoom. She said she was hiring for Zoom
- 13:34Speaker 4: during during like the peak of COVID. If you win Zoom,
- 13:38Speaker 4: it totally exploded if you can imagine that many people
- 13:41Speaker 4: that she had to hire. So she's super legit. So
- 13:44Speaker 4: we'll definitely tag her when he posts this out. But
- 13:46Speaker 4: she this is one of the one of the stories
- 13:48Speaker 4: that she told me in my interview with her.
- 13:49Speaker 5: So if we can play this.
- 13:52Speaker 3: So our candidate and I'm going to call her Candy
- 13:55Speaker 3: looked great on paper. So I went out to the
- 13:57Speaker 3: lobby to bring Candy back to the interview area. She
- 14:00Speaker 3: was seated in the lobby next to a younger man
- 14:03Speaker 3: who looked kind of scruffy. He was in a torn
- 14:06Speaker 3: T shirt and baggy jeans, And she got up to
- 14:08Speaker 3: come back after I called her name, and he also
- 14:11Speaker 3: got up and gave her a kiss and said good luck, honey.
- 14:14Speaker 3: And I was like, oh, okay, this was not on
- 14:17Speaker 3: my Bingo card that we would come as a couple
- 14:19Speaker 3: to our interview. So she came back and we started
- 14:21Speaker 3: her interview, and she seemed kind of nervous. After an
- 14:25Speaker 3: unusually long and rambly answer, kind of like noticed looking
- 14:29Speaker 3: at each other across the table, and the leader of
- 14:32Speaker 3: our team said, hey, you know what, thank you so
- 14:34Speaker 3: much for coming in. We'll be in touch. So I
- 14:37Speaker 3: grabbed her and escorted her out to the exit to
- 14:40Speaker 3: the lobby. So I went back to the interview space
- 14:42Speaker 3: and they were discussing the candidate, and the guard and
- 14:45Speaker 3: the maintenance man rushed into the interview room and they
- 14:48Speaker 3: were like, whatever you do, do not hire that woman
- 14:51Speaker 3: for this job. And we're like, oh my god, what's
- 14:53Speaker 3: going on. So apparently shortly after she left the lobby
- 14:56Speaker 3: for her interview, her boyfriend wanted to use the restaurant.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I have a public restroom available, and the guard told
- 15:02Speaker 3: him that and explained to him that if he wanted
- 15:05Speaker 3: to go into the securitary have to have an ID
- 15:07Speaker 3: and an escort. Well, he did not have an ID.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Started screaming at the guard. That caused the maintenance man
- 15:13Speaker 3: to come out of his office to see what was
- 15:15Speaker 3: going on, and he became more and more belligolent, belligerent
- 15:19Speaker 3: until the guard and the maintenance man had to ask
- 15:22Speaker 3: him to leave the building. So he left the building,
- 15:24Speaker 3: headed out for his car, and then he stopped at
- 15:26Speaker 3: the edge of the parking lot, turned around to face
- 15:29Speaker 3: the building and unzipped and started urinating in the short
- 15:33Speaker 3: stopped in the hedges and just did it, zipped up
- 15:37Speaker 3: and went to his car. So the guard and the
- 15:40Speaker 3: maintenance man went out and told him specifically that he
- 15:42Speaker 3: was trespassed off the property, he had to leave, and
- 15:45Speaker 3: that they would let you know, his girlfriend know that
- 15:48Speaker 3: he was parked on the public street right around the corner.
- 15:50Speaker 3: So she was pretty shocked when he wasn't in the
- 15:53Speaker 3: lobby and really distressed that she had to walk a
- 15:56Speaker 3: half a block to get to the car, and needless
- 15:59Speaker 3: to we did not hire her.
- 16:02Speaker 2: But now I feel kind of bad because, like what,
- 16:04Speaker 2: they didn't hire her because of him.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Well, she brought him, that's her choice. There's no way
- 16:10Speaker 1: that was the first sign is crazy behavior.
- 16:13Speaker 2: It's kind of funny though it also reminds me of
- 16:15Speaker 2: that story that we read, I don't know if it
- 16:17Speaker 2: was last episode or a couple of episodes ago, of
- 16:21Speaker 2: the woman that would like urinated in the parking lot
- 16:24Speaker 2: because she was just she wanted to avoid work by
- 16:27Speaker 2: just sitting in the car all day, and then she
- 16:29Speaker 2: just wouldn't go inside to use the back.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I never fully understood that story. Is like me neither
- 16:33Speaker 1: how someone could.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Think that a weird, weird red flag theme for us
- 16:36Speaker 4: to have just being in the parking lot with the candidates, like, oh,
- 16:39Speaker 4: that's the red flag to look out for. I guess
- 16:40Speaker 4: I don't know if that's a super relatable story, but
- 16:42Speaker 4: it's happened more than once, which is kind of crazy.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I bet, I bet there are so many recruiters and
- 16:50Speaker 1: hiring managers and stuff out there that have had like
- 16:53Speaker 1: these dual interview things. I've read that that some of
- 16:58Speaker 1: gen Z's have their parents to an interview for that.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You know, it's probably some helicopter parent who is so
- 17:07Speaker 1: involved and it's like, you know, I'll come to interview
- 17:11Speaker 1: with you, honey and help help you get through this.
- 17:14Speaker 4: They'll understand, or maybe they're their ride, you know, the
- 17:18Speaker 4: interview well I gave to I don't know.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Yeah, so I don't know that's that's that's a that's
- 17:24Speaker 1: a great story. I bet that's not the you know.
- 17:27Speaker 2: I still feel kind of bad, like, you know, when
- 17:31Speaker 2: the maintenance guy had to come up, I do not
- 17:34Speaker 2: rushing in.
- 17:36Speaker 4: We don't ever want him near here. The scruffy boyfriend, right,
- 17:41Speaker 4: But that is.
- 17:42Speaker 1: That is interesting that he came with her and sat
- 17:45Speaker 1: in the lobby.
- 17:46Speaker 5: He's been supportive, I guess. But then I guess, But then.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Did you go sit in the lobby ter and your
- 17:54Speaker 1: wife's interviews when you know we're dating?
- 17:56Speaker 4: No, I can't say that. Did you wait in the
- 17:58Speaker 4: car let her know? Let you didn't go with her?
- 18:02Speaker 5: I guess not, bro, So I did not remember.
- 18:04Speaker 4: I also didn't the parking lot either, So.
- 18:08Speaker 5: That we both have jobs today.
- 18:09Speaker 1: So go.
- 18:12Speaker 5: So okay, let me get on to my second story.
- 18:15Speaker 5: This one was real quick.
- 18:15Speaker 4: This was also submitted for the contest, so more opportunities
- 18:19Speaker 4: for people to win two thousand dollars.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Okay.
- 18:22Speaker 4: At the time this happened, I was part of the
- 18:24Speaker 4: executive leadership team at a growing organization responsible for hiring
- 18:28Speaker 4: and firing. I'd interviewed hundreds of candidates, and I genuinely
- 18:32Speaker 4: believed that I had a good instinct for people we
- 18:35Speaker 4: were hiring for a front office role. This person would
- 18:37Speaker 4: be the face and the filter of the organization. They
- 18:40Speaker 4: would touch everything every on a day to day basis, clients, staff,
- 18:45Speaker 4: and operations on a daily basis. On paper, our newest
- 18:49Speaker 4: candidate looked solid, they stable resume relevant experience. But in
- 18:53Speaker 4: the interview, oh, in the In the interview, she seemed
- 18:56Speaker 4: like the right fit, and she talked about being dependable,
- 18:58Speaker 4: staying organized, supporting the team behind the scenes, no red flags.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Another executive interviewed her with me and we were completely
- 19:06Speaker 4: aligned on this. References checked out, We all felt confident.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Then her first day came along. The person who walked
- 19:14Speaker 4: in that door was not the same person that we
- 19:16Speaker 4: interviewed always the first day, so it was actually the
- 19:20Speaker 4: same person.
- 19:20Speaker 1: OK. I was confused when we've had that. We've heard
- 19:23Speaker 1: stories about people interviewing any of the twins someone else.
- 19:27Speaker 5: Yeah, the evil twin walks in.
- 19:29Speaker 4: No, just a different energy and says her energy was
- 19:33Speaker 4: completely different. She was loud, dominating over sharing that one calm,
- 19:38Speaker 4: steady presence that we had during the interview was not
- 19:41Speaker 4: there anymore. So I pulled the other executive aside and
- 19:44Speaker 4: I said, is this even the same person? And they
- 19:46Speaker 4: said technically yes, but practically no. Over the next few weeks,
- 19:50Speaker 4: the problems continued to add up. Conversations derailed, tasks were
- 19:56Speaker 4: not completed, as instructed staff started to quietly come to
- 20:00Speaker 4: leadership with their concerns. The front office went from being
- 20:03Speaker 4: an anchor to a source of constant tention. So we
- 20:06Speaker 4: get what we did what good leaders do. We clarified
- 20:08Speaker 4: some expectations, documented feedback, all that good stuff, but instead
- 20:12Speaker 4: of improving, she got worse. So eventually, after months of
- 20:16Speaker 4: careful management, we decided that.
- 20:18Speaker 5: We had to let her go.
- 20:19Speaker 4: We handled it deliberately, professionally, knowing that the personality we
- 20:24Speaker 4: were dealing with was on the difficult side. So looking back,
- 20:26Speaker 4: what stuck with me most is this, the person we
- 20:29Speaker 4: met in the interview only existed for about that one hour,
- 20:31Speaker 4: and the person who showed up every day after that
- 20:33Speaker 4: was completely somebody else, entirely, And so that's something we
- 20:36Speaker 4: have to plan for in the future going forward.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess everybody, that's what you call really good
- 20:42Speaker 1: interview training.
- 20:43Speaker 5: I guess.
- 20:43Speaker 2: So I about to say, I was like, I understand
- 20:46Speaker 2: it to an extent, but only like not in this one.
- 20:51Speaker 2: We were completely acting out of character, and like, like
- 20:55Speaker 2: I get like when you go to interveryw and you're
- 20:58Speaker 2: nervous and you're like it forward, Yeah, you're trying to
- 21:01Speaker 2: a super professional and everything, and then you get hired
- 21:03Speaker 2: and then you get into the company and like you
- 21:05Speaker 2: let your personality come out or whatever.
- 21:07Speaker 1: It is a little quick on the first day, on
- 21:12Speaker 1: the first day, if you're completely like that'ncing off the wall. Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hard because, like in any interview, you want
- 21:18Speaker 4: to be the best version of yourself, trying to make
- 21:20Speaker 4: a really good first impression. Uh so, I understand the
- 21:23Speaker 4: aspect of it, but to like do that so much
- 21:26Speaker 4: that that's not even a real person. And then when
- 21:28Speaker 4: you started somebody completely different, I feel like you're making
- 21:31Speaker 4: a first where people.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Are questioning is this the same person?
- 21:35Speaker 1: That's how you know, if you're a professional, you're hiring
- 21:37Speaker 1: people right, yeah all the time. You got to believe
- 21:41Speaker 1: that after years of doing it, you know, for a
- 21:45Speaker 1: big majority of it, they have figured out how to
- 21:48Speaker 1: get past some of that. Yeah, you know, I mean,
- 21:49Speaker 1: so to pull it off, to be like completely someone different.
- 21:54Speaker 5: That's what the challenge was. Gause, Yeah, good feel for.
- 21:58Speaker 1: That really really you know requires work and to get
- 22:02Speaker 1: past someone who does this for a living. You know,
- 22:05Speaker 1: we know so many recruiters and folks who satin hundreds,
- 22:09Speaker 1: if not thousands of interviews. Yeah, you know, and probably
- 22:13Speaker 1: can smell that from a mile away, junk from a
- 22:17Speaker 1: mile away, you know, but some still slips through. I yes,
- 22:21Speaker 1: so that's tough.
- 22:22Speaker 5: I thought those actual bad hire yeah, realistic story.
- 22:24Speaker 2: But yep, me now, yep, okay, hold on, okay, I
- 22:32Speaker 2: have two today. They're both submissions. So these were submitted
- 22:36Speaker 2: for our contest. Okay, the first one is super short.
- 22:41Speaker 2: I'll just I'll just get into it. This one. We've
- 22:44Speaker 2: we've read a couple of stories kind of like this one.
- 22:46Speaker 2: I feel like I'm the executive director of a nonprofit
- 22:50Speaker 2: for literacy. We trained volunteers to deliver literacy instruction to
- 22:55Speaker 2: underserved struggling readers. Our students are between six and ten
- 22:58Speaker 2: years old, so like really young children.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I'm in love already. I love it.
- 23:02Speaker 2: One volunteer was so smart and so eager to become
- 23:05Speaker 2: a literacy tutor, and I thought she would be the
- 23:07Speaker 2: best tutor. On her first meeting with the family and me,
- 23:11Speaker 2: she came into the library carrying a container of what
- 23:14Speaker 2: looked like tea. It was not tea, just.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Pre curses it.
- 23:24Speaker 2: In just a few minutes, I realized she was very
- 23:26Speaker 2: badly intoxicate.
- 23:27Speaker 1: And oh that was it?
- 23:30Speaker 5: Yeah, what was it?
- 23:32Speaker 2: It wasn't tea your interpretation it was, Yeah.
- 23:40Speaker 3: It was.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Turbon. I don't know. Dang.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Yeah, that's that's tough, especially young kids like that. I'm
- 23:49Speaker 5: sure you have fired on the spot.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Of course, the first meeting to first.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Day, A lot of first round here we should I mean,
- 23:57Speaker 4: you know, it's the bad hire.
- 23:58Speaker 5: I guess a lot of times that behave.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Yours that first that first a fail is It is
- 24:02Speaker 1: amazing how many times we hear stories about day.
- 24:05Speaker 2: And obviously I don't know anything about this person or
- 24:08Speaker 2: their personal life, so I'm I'm in no place to judge,
- 24:13Speaker 2: But like, why would you come in on your first
- 24:15Speaker 2: day like that? If you excelled in the interview and
- 24:18Speaker 2: like you're so eager to be a tutor, and then
- 24:20Speaker 2: you come in and.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Bombing to stop long enough to interview. Yeah, seemed like
- 24:26Speaker 1: you know.
- 24:26Speaker 2: But yeah, you know, sometimes I don't know them, and
- 24:30Speaker 2: yeahs to judge them.
- 24:31Speaker 1: It's a disease, you know, the any help? Yeah, yeah,
- 24:37Speaker 1: all right, I hate to see it.
- 24:38Speaker 2: I got one more. This one's a little bit longer. Yeah,
- 24:42Speaker 2: kind of long, all right. My startup was raising an
- 24:46Speaker 2: early funding round and one of our key investors knew
- 24:49Speaker 2: we needed a chief technology officer to quarterback our tech development.
- 24:53Speaker 2: He had a friend with some technical experience that had
- 24:56Speaker 2: just sold his company to a brand. Our investor actually
- 24:59Speaker 2: made his investment contingent and book upon us hiring his
- 25:03Speaker 2: friend as our CTO at an annual salary of three
- 25:06Speaker 2: hundred and sixty thousand dollars. Oh nice, my co founder is.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Some premium dove for a startup.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Yeah, my co founder and I were taken aback by
- 25:15Speaker 2: the number, as we were a pre revenue startup and
- 25:17Speaker 2: hadn't even taken salaries ourselves yet. Since the investment was
- 25:21Speaker 2: critical to us our and our key investor was vouching
- 25:24Speaker 2: for this person, we agreed to the terms, signed documents,
- 25:28Speaker 2: received the wire transfer from our investor, and hired the CTO.
- 25:32Speaker 2: He was living in New York and we were based
- 25:34Speaker 2: in Los Angeles, so we only met him two or
- 25:38Speaker 2: three times and spent one afternoon going over his technical
- 25:40Speaker 2: development plan on a whiteboard. That was the only deliverable
- 25:45Speaker 2: we ever received from him. As his first month with
- 25:49Speaker 2: us was coming up, we called him for an update
- 25:51Speaker 2: on his progress. He went on for about thirty minutes
- 25:53Speaker 2: on how he planned to build out our tech stack
- 25:55Speaker 2: and went over his ideas for our future set. Just
- 25:58Speaker 2: before we were about to hang up, he said, oh,
- 26:00Speaker 2: I forgot to mention something. We thought it might be
- 26:02Speaker 2: something regarding the tech plan. He continued, I thought I
- 26:06Speaker 2: should tell you that I took a full time managing
- 26:08Speaker 2: director position at Goldman status. He said it like he
- 26:11Speaker 2: was telling us what he had for lunch, Like, oh,
- 26:13Speaker 2: by the way, yeah. My co founder and I looked
- 26:17Speaker 2: at each other, thinking we must have misheard something. Did
- 26:20Speaker 2: you just say you're now working full time?
- 26:23Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 26:24Speaker 1: Wait for how long have you been doing that?
- 26:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 26:27Speaker 5: He's been there for a month.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Yeah, still not believing what we had just heard, and
- 26:31Speaker 2: he replied, yes, and it will actually be really good, Yes,
- 26:34Speaker 2: and it will actually be really good for you, like
- 26:37Speaker 2: the CTO said that to them for him, Yeah, yeah,
- 26:39Speaker 2: actually be really good for you that I am.
- 26:41Speaker 5: We're have this full time position for them.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Now.
- 26:44Speaker 2: We were incredulous it'll be good for us. How is
- 26:47Speaker 2: it good for us that you'll be spending forty plus
- 26:49Speaker 2: hours a week at Goldman when we just hired you
- 26:51Speaker 2: to build our platform for.
- 26:52Speaker 5: Three hundred and sixty thousand this year. Yeah?
- 26:54Speaker 2: And he said, well, I'll be able to do the
- 26:56Speaker 2: work for you at night. I'll be able to focus
- 26:58Speaker 2: on getting your bill done even faster, he said, nonchalantly.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Even faster than if I did it during the day.
- 27:05Speaker 5: Yeah, no distractions at night, and I was looking for
- 27:09Speaker 5: a job. Yeah.
- 27:10Speaker 2: And they're like, we'll have to think about that. We'll
- 27:12Speaker 2: call you tomorrow. Was about all we could say. Still
- 27:15Speaker 2: in shock over over our three hundred and sixty thousand
- 27:19Speaker 2: dollars moonlighting employee, we hung up that call and immediately
- 27:23Speaker 2: called our investor. His reaction was like, as expected, what
- 27:27Speaker 2: the heck, that's way out of line. I'm really sorry, guys.
- 27:30Speaker 2: How much have you paid him? We told him we
- 27:32Speaker 2: just made our first monthly payment to him of thirty
- 27:35Speaker 2: thousand dollars. Okay, don't worry, I'll take care of it.
- 27:38Speaker 2: You won't have to deal with him again, he told us,
- 27:40Speaker 2: And as we hung up the call, we both looked
- 27:43Speaker 2: at each other and did a double take. Is this
- 27:45Speaker 2: what we could expect on the road to building a
- 27:47Speaker 2: tech platform?
- 27:49Speaker 5: It turns out it was problem.
- 27:50Speaker 2: The thirty thousand dollars lesson prepped us for dealing with
- 27:53Speaker 2: some of the false promises, deceitful conduct and self serving
- 27:57Speaker 2: egos involved in the software development space that we were
- 27:59Speaker 2: to experience.
- 28:00Speaker 1: In the near future.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Yeah, well it's not not to spoil it, but that
- 28:04Speaker 4: was Steve. That was Steve's story, the guy that I
- 28:06Speaker 4: interviewed on River. Oh really yeah, so he told me
- 28:09Speaker 4: that story. So if you want to hear that full story,
- 28:11Speaker 4: like in in depth and all the kind of stuff
- 28:13Speaker 4: it goes around it, Like, I think we have the
- 28:14Speaker 4: full cool.
- 28:17Speaker 2: I didn't put the people's names on here. I just just.
- 28:21Speaker 1: As she was telling the story, I was like, I
- 28:22Speaker 1: swear to heard this before. It's because I watched that
- 28:25Speaker 1: interview with him. Yeah, it was, it was. It was
- 28:27Speaker 1: actually a pretty interesting interview, super interesting. Yeah, and yeah,
- 28:31Speaker 1: he tells a story about and that it's so true
- 28:35Speaker 1: that can happen, you know, for startups and those that
- 28:39Speaker 1: depended upon investors, because investors end up, especially their significant
- 28:43Speaker 1: more significant though, with a lot of power to put
- 28:46Speaker 1: people to work for you to say you got to
- 28:48Speaker 1: use this or you got to use that, and you
- 28:50Speaker 1: know a great great example of you know that networking out.
- 28:54Speaker 4: So yeah, and I think he put it really well
- 28:57Speaker 4: where it's like I guess this is what I can
- 29:00Speaker 4: back when I'm building a tech company or however you
- 29:02Speaker 4: kind of put it, because yeah, that's what we're kind
- 29:04Speaker 4: of saying about this whole show being relatable or people
- 29:06Speaker 4: in hiring. So for anybody who's kind of hiring in
- 29:09Speaker 4: that space, yeah, building a tech startup or whatever that
- 29:12Speaker 4: might be. Yeah, there can be a lot of big
- 29:15Speaker 4: swings like that that can be unexpected.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Yeah, lot, are you still building? You if you were
- 29:20Speaker 1: out you were in Silicon Valley, right, I.
- 29:22Speaker 5: Was right near there. Yeah, so I worked for a
- 29:24Speaker 5: few startups that.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:25Speaker 4: You know, it's always kind of like, oh, we're gonna
- 29:26Speaker 4: make a billion dollars or actually, sorry, no, we're going
- 29:29Speaker 4: on you know, and it's because of that kind of thing.
- 29:32Speaker 5: They have these big dreams, the big promises.
- 29:35Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, three hundred sixty thousand dollars a year whatever,
- 29:37Speaker 4: and it just goes like that.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Yeah, you remember you telling me when we were inter
- 29:41Speaker 1: of you and you were like, yeah, I went to
- 29:42Speaker 1: work for this one company and I actually thought, Okay,
- 29:45Speaker 1: this will be good. He'll be resourceful. But you're like
- 29:47Speaker 1: and they told me, oh, you've got this big budget.
- 29:49Speaker 1: You got this budget, and when you got there, like
- 29:51Speaker 1: thirty days later, you know, your senior person left and
- 29:55Speaker 1: they were like, but just now zero good luck, you know, good.
- 29:58Speaker 5: Luck, you know those kind of normal.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Yeah, my chief marketing officer was fired on my twenty
- 30:05Speaker 4: first day, so like my boss. Yeah, so then I
- 30:07Speaker 4: was the only marketing person at the company pretty.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Much, right, and you went from budget to no budget.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Yeah, it was like, I think they're spending.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I actually love the story.
- 30:13Speaker 4: It's one of the reasons I gotta be resourceful because
- 30:16Speaker 4: it made you resourceful. I was like, if this dude
- 30:18Speaker 4: can do it on zero, I'll take you. Yeah, well
- 30:21Speaker 4: I'll try to make our budget zero.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Yeah. I love it. Yeah, why were you just asking
- 30:25Speaker 1: me for a bunch of money? I don't understand. I
- 30:26Speaker 1: don't know, is your every request for money with you
- 30:29Speaker 1: didn't have any before and you did twenty million views?
- 30:32Speaker 1: What's the deal?
- 30:33Speaker 5: You got a point? Yeah, but imagine if we went
- 30:35Speaker 5: from zero to a million per year.
- 30:36Speaker 2: You know.
- 30:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you got to stay flexible with all the big changes,
- 30:40Speaker 4: I guess.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:41Speaker 5: But anyways, that full interview with Steve is on our stage.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I hope people watch it because I think it is
- 30:46Speaker 1: kind of it is kind of in a way he's
- 30:49Speaker 1: an interesting dude in a way.
- 30:51Speaker 2: It kind of reminded me of the guy that changed
- 30:52Speaker 2: his salary to a million dollars a little bit in
- 30:54Speaker 2: our last episode. Yeah, I kind of pulled it kind
- 30:57Speaker 2: of reminded me of that a little bit. Yeah, still funny. Yeah,
- 31:00Speaker 2: it's funny.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Cool. Well, I it was fun. Well, thanks for joining
- 31:06Speaker 1: us today. We appreciate it. Yeah, thanks for listening to
