Latest / BREAK/FIX the Motorsports & Vehicle Enthusiast Variety Show / Future-Proofing the Collector Car Hobby: Chris Bright (Collector Part Exchange)
Transcript
- 0:00Break Fix podcast is all about capturing the living history of people from all
- 0:05over the autos sphere, from wrench, turners, and racers to artists, authors,
- 0:09designers, and everything in between.
- 0:11Our goal is to inspire a new generation of Petrolhead that wonder.
- 0:16How did they get that job or become that person?
- 0:19The road to success is paved by all of us because everyone has a story
- 0:27with each passing gear and each generation.
- 0:30In the automotive world, more and more cars are becoming collector items from
- 0:35your grandfather's 35 Packard to a 63 beetle convertible or iconic eighties
- 0:40Ferrari tucked away in your garage.
- 0:43Wouldn't it be awesome if there was a way to make it easier to keep these kinds
- 0:46of vehicles on the road no matter what?
- 0:49We all agree we wanna keep these cars running and looking their
- 0:52best for as long as we can.
- 0:54Enter Chris Bright, co-founder of the Collector part Exchange, CPX for short.
- 1:00A new community designed specifically for an easy and fun to use website,
- 1:05supporting great businesses that keep this hobby vibrant.
- 1:08And with that, let's welcome Chris to break Fix.
- 1:11Oh, it's great to be here.
- 1:12That was an awesome intro.
- 1:15As I start out, many of these interviews, every great story has an origin.
- 1:19So let's talk about the origin story behind CPX, the who, the what, the
- 1:24where, the why behind the effort.
- 1:25So Chris, tell us all about it.
- 1:27Sure.
- 1:28Yeah.
- 1:28Well, uh, how far do you want me to go back to birth or no
- 1:33collector product exchange?
- 1:34It was kind of a happy accident.
- 1:36I've been in tech startups and an entrepreneur pretty
- 1:39much for my entire career.
- 1:40That's a natural place for me.
- 1:42And I'd actually been the co-founder of a pretty successful software company
- 1:46out here in Portland, Oregon, that it got acquired in 2017 and we were
- 1:50continuing to operate the company.
- 1:52But once that transaction happens, things start to change
- 1:56culturally and just operationally, and it became less interesting.
- 1:59I'm more of a startup person than I am, like running and a
- 2:02going concern type of thing.
- 2:03So I decided it was time to leave and, and one of my fellow executives, Aaron, who's
- 2:08my business partner now, decided that.
- 2:11He wanted to leave too.
- 2:12And I said, I'm gonna start a new company.
- 2:13I have no idea what it's gonna be.
- 2:15We decided to just brainstorm.
- 2:18So I rented a cabin out in the woods.
- 2:20We were totally disconnected, only heated by a, a little wood-burning fire
- 2:24out in these cold old growth forest.
- 2:26And we just started brainstorming and we got those post-it notes that
- 2:30stick on the walls, and we would like just sit down and randomly start
- 2:33spouting out ideas and writing 'em up.
- 2:34If someone had been passing by, they'd think we were the
- 2:37unabomber or something like that.
- 2:38And guessing these ideas range the gamut, right from one
- 2:43end of the spectrum together.
- 2:44So how did you settle on cars?
- 2:46Yeah.
- 2:47During that conversation, I said, I've been into cars for my adult life.
- 2:51And I said, Aaron, there's this thing that happens in Portland in April on the
- 2:56one of the wettest weekends of the year.
- 2:58It's called a swap meet.
- 2:59This swap meet attracts 120,000 people and messes up traffic for days.
- 3:04People love it, and I don't understand how that continues to exist in this.
- 3:10Electronic E-commerce, Amazon World.
- 3:13I said, there's gotta be a, a better way to connect people and help them find
- 3:17those parts and help them get what they need for their cars because it's really
- 3:20easy to buy stuff at a car level, bring a trailer, being the the best example today.
- 3:25But if you wanna buy a car, you can buy a car online.
- 3:28It's not that hard.
- 3:29Buying parts is a completely different story, and I have experienced
- 3:33that frustration in my own life.
- 3:34We didn't choose that idea.
- 3:36Then we kept it in the hopper of like the good ideas.
- 3:40So we went back and we started looking at all the different
- 3:43things that we had available to us, and this one just continued to
- 3:47come back to us as the best idea.
- 3:49I like the fact that it's in an area that I'm interested in and
- 3:53that's exciting to me personally, but I honestly think that can be a
- 3:56problem in, in the business world.
- 3:58Like if you're a startup person and you do something that you think is cool
- 4:00or fun, usually you don't see the real business opportunity or even right.
- 4:04So I kind of shun those ideas.
- 4:06But this one, the more we looked into it, the better it got
- 4:09because it's a huge marketplace.
- 4:11It is one of those places that just hasn't caught up with the modern
- 4:14way of buying and selling things.
- 4:16So if you're looking for a rare part for whatever car, it's pretty difficult
- 4:21to find just by searching in Google.
- 4:23So we know from our backgrounds, Erin and I, that that's
- 4:27something that can be solved.
- 4:28So we decided we don't wanna own parts or sell parts ourselves.
- 4:32We wanna support all of these other businesses who haven't yet modernized into
- 4:36the world because there's new generations of buyers getting into this space, and
- 4:40they don't want to pick up the phone.
- 4:42Nobody wants to pick up the phone anymore, it seems like to
- 4:45call around and look for parts.
- 4:46They just want to go online, find it in Google, and then buy it.
- 4:50That's essentially what we're trying to create is connecting all
- 4:53of these small businesses in the universe of the collector car world
- 4:57and get them into one place where.
- 4:59We can help them be found in Google and help them find new
- 5:03customers wherever they may be.
- 5:05And we're only six months into it, but it's been a really
- 5:07exciting journey so far.
- 5:09So before we get into the more technical details of the how it works and why
- 5:13it works and all that, let's talk about the name for just a second.
- 5:16I have to admit I struggled a bit.
- 5:19It's not a plural parts, it's it's collector.
- 5:23Parts exchange or part.
- 5:25See, I'm doing it again.
- 5:26So why drop the S?
- 5:28There's gotta be a stereotype.
- 5:29Every time you say parts exchange, we gotta drink something.
- 5:34Agreed.
- 5:35Why drop the S?
- 5:36Originally it was that, and we have that URL.
- 5:38But imagine the URL and you put the word parts and the word
- 5:43exchange next to each other.
- 5:45Now imagine that s not being part of parts, but part of sex change.
- 5:51Oh, once you see that, it's like pretty hard not to see it again.
- 5:55So you decided.
- 5:57Eh, that could be problematic.
- 5:59So we just went with the singular, but if you go to Collector Parts Exchange,
- 6:03it still gets you to our website.
- 6:04You bought both domains.
- 6:05That's a smart move, because I was gonna say, parts rolls off
- 6:08the tongue a little bit quicker.
- 6:09I know we all default to the plural because I don't
- 6:11see myself buying one part.
- 6:13It, it's gonna be multiple parts.
- 6:15Yeah.
- 6:15And all that.
- 6:16So you alluded to being a car guy, and obviously invention is bred by
- 6:21necessity, so you must have some sort of classic car or vintage vehicle.
- 6:26That's really the impetus behind this.
- 6:28So let's dive into that a little bit.
- 6:30Yeah, I tend to like the unusual, gotta keep Portland weird, right?
- 6:34Yeah, exactly.
- 6:35Always.
- 6:36So my very first collector grade car, I'll say was a Porsche 9 28.
- 6:42You know, when I was growing up, that was on the cover of Road and Track Magazine
- 6:47and in all the top cars of the year type particles that you would, it was also in
- 6:51the movie Scarface and in risky business.
- 6:53Exactly.
- 6:54So, and, and I just always thought it was a really cool and interesting
- 6:57car, but as we all know, it was.
- 6:59Quite unloved.
- 7:00It was never accepted by Porsche files.
- 7:02I get why that happens.
- 7:03I don't need to defend it.
- 7:04But if you just look at the car in and of itself, it's an amazing hand-built
- 7:09machine, and it's actually superior in many ways to the nine elevens in
- 7:13its build quality and the technology that it has and aerodynamics.
- 7:17But we won't get into that.
- 7:18Even today.
- 7:19I look at 'em and I still find them to be.
- 7:20Very beautiful and even modern looking.
- 7:23Like the first one I think came out in 75 or something like that, at least
- 7:27the, the show car that predated it.
- 7:29I digress.
- 7:30So I had a Porsche 9 28 and I had a great mechanic, but finding parts for
- 7:33it wasn't that easy, but there were a couple of people that did that.
- 7:37And I drove that car.
- 7:38That was my daily driver, that was my only car for many years,
- 7:41and I put 175,000 miles on it.
- 7:44And it was great to own, to be honest with you.
- 7:46It, it rarely broke down.
- 7:47It was hugely over-engineered.
- 7:49Fast forward, the, the next car I got was uh, an Alpha Romeo.
- 7:53So I got an Alpha Romeo GTV, it's a 1972.
- 7:57And ooh, I'd been in Italy and I saw one and it was like,
- 8:01oh man, that is a cool car.
- 8:03So I went and I started shopping around and I found one in my local.
- 8:07Alpha Romeo Club and somebody was selling it, so I bought it and
- 8:10God, what a great car that was, and just finding things for that.
- 8:14It was possible, but again, it was hard.
- 8:16It was not online.
- 8:17You didn't go somewhere, at least in, when I own the car, you didn't
- 8:20go to some website and go click, click, click, and it arrives the
- 8:24next day and you can install it.
- 8:27It's a lot of calling around.
- 8:28It's a lot of like word of mouth or calling.
- 8:32There's this guy John Norman down in the Bay Area who's
- 8:34got like this stash of parts.
- 8:36He's a great guy, but none of it's online and none of it's
- 8:38even really cataloged in any way.
- 8:40It's all cataloged in his brain.
- 8:42You know, you were always on the prowl for all of these parts and things that
- 8:46whether it was something that broke or something that you just wanted to
- 8:49upgrade or tweak on your car, whether it was wheels or seats or whatever.
- 8:54To me that was.
- 8:55Frustrating because we're spoiled nowadays.
- 8:58Honestly, whenever I click something, I expect it to
- 9:01basically arrive within 24 hours.
- 9:04And I'm exaggerating, but only a little bit.
- 9:06If you have to call somebody and talk through things, it's hard to
- 9:10make time for that in our busy lives.
- 9:12So for the individual owners, that's a problem, but also.
- 9:15Even more so for restoration shops and repair shops.
- 9:19If you run a specialty collector vehicle service or restoration business,
- 9:24you have staff or a lot of your time is dedicated to calling around
- 9:28and trying to find what you need.
- 9:29And to me, that could break the back of the collector car business in many ways.
- 9:33Like if these parts get increasingly rare and increasingly hard to find, people
- 9:36aren't gonna want to pay for that time to find them and do all of these things.
- 9:40Again, it's a problem that can be easily solved, but it's gonna take a
- 9:44lot of work and a lot of perseverance to kind of actually pull it off.
- 9:48And some people might argue that that was part of the fund
- 9:51maybe 20 or 30 years ago, right?
- 9:53Where you didn't have the accessibility is, is working on
- 9:56some of these rarer or vintage cars.
- 9:58You know, we have to put it in perspective.
- 10:00It's like a treasure hunt, right?
- 10:01You're out there exploring, you're meeting new people, you're discovering,
- 10:04oh, this guy, you know, John Norman, he's got the stash of parts in
- 10:06the Bay Area, you know, whatever.
- 10:07And then you become friends with that guy, you know, and it, and it builds these
- 10:10relationships and it's, it's a different.
- 10:13Way of being.
- 10:14I suppose I came up through that era, right?
- 10:15But I also learned very quickly if I was smart, especially with
- 10:19European cars, I would cross match.
- 10:21I could figure out, well, that blah, blah, blah 9 28 part was actually
- 10:25available on every Volkswagen from, you know, 1982 to 1994.
- 10:30So I could just go to the local junkyard and get the same thing and not pay,
- 10:33you know, the Porsche tax or whatever.
- 10:35Obviously it's more difficult with something like an Alpha Romeo or a
- 10:38Ferrari, but I even learned working on some British cars like Lotuses and stuff,
- 10:42where it was like, oh, well that's off a Nash, which is actually off of a Chevy.
- 10:46You know, things like that.
- 10:46So again, that was part of the fun of, of learning that Then you
- 10:49became this subject matter expert.
- 10:51But now, as you said, times have changed.
- 10:53A lot of those folks that we relied on as pillars in this collector car world
- 10:58are now, you know, maybe they're gone or they've moved on, or, you know,
- 11:02collections have been inherited by.
- 11:04The people that were left behind.
- 11:05So to your point, how do we overcome the challenge of, you know, getting,
- 11:10let's say these large collections, some might say PAC Rat collections
- 11:14up on a website, let alone up on CPX.
- 11:18So how are you aiding people in doing that?
- 11:20You nailed it.
- 11:21I think it's one of those situations where we have to help it adapt and that's what
- 11:25I kind of see is the mission of collector part exchange, which is helping connect
- 11:29these business to the greater global network so that people can find 'em.
- 11:32And to your point, it is part of the fun of getting to know
- 11:35people and trading that knowledge.
- 11:37But.
- 11:37It's evaporating, it's not captured anywhere.
- 11:39It's all word of mouth.
- 11:40And those elders are moving on, whether by choice or not, I really feel a
- 11:45mission to try and create an alternative path to capture that knowledge.
- 11:50Either through community forums.
- 11:52We don't have those yet, but we intend to like build areas where you can
- 11:55go and ask for advice and get help.
- 11:58Yeah.
- 11:58And, and ask those subject matter experts.
- 12:00'cause you don't know that subject matter expert for your car.
- 12:03He might be in Japan.
- 12:04Yeah.
- 12:04Or Australia.
- 12:05You know, you don't know.
- 12:05Like the one guy who knows that model inside and out isn't in the
- 12:09US anymore, it's somewhere else.
- 12:11So just having a place for that and then helping make sure that those
- 12:14parts don't accidentally get trashed for businesses that are going under,
- 12:18or collectors that have have a mass, like a garage full of parts.
- 12:22We need to have a ready place for them to send those parts.
- 12:25And that's where collector part exchange comes in.
- 12:27Yeah.
- 12:28And you know what always happens, and this, I saw this.
- 12:30Recently, a friend of mine unloaded a bunch of 16 valve Volkswagen stuff from
- 12:35the eighties, and he is like, nobody wants this stuff anymore, blah, blah, blah.
- 12:38It's all trash.
- 12:39And he dumps it without fail.
- 12:40Three weeks later, somebody goes, I'm looking for blah,
- 12:43blah, blah for a 16 valve.
- 12:44And he's like, well, I just threw that away.
- 12:45I'm like, no, that, that happens all the time.
- 12:48And to me it's like a, a, a little piece of my heart breaks
- 12:52when I hear stories like that.
- 12:54And I know of a really famous, um, alpha Romeo dealership on the
- 12:58east coast that the guys aged out and they just wanted to be done.
- 13:01So they basically shut down their business, put everything in some
- 13:05containers, and people were buying entire containers of parts for
- 13:09like $2,000 just so that they didn't go into Yep, the landfill.
- 13:14We can't have that happen.
- 13:15I wanna be tied into estate sales.
- 13:17I wanna be tied into junkyards.
- 13:18I wanna be tied into all these businesses and, and help broker.
- 13:21If somebody wants to retire, Hey, I've, I, maybe I've had a successful
- 13:24business career and I'm a car guy.
- 13:26Maybe I wanna take over your business for you.
- 13:28It's like that would be something that we could do.
- 13:30But getting back to your original question, which was how
- 13:33do we help them get parts on?
- 13:35Right now, anybody can load parts, indoor system, and it's free, by the way,
- 13:39if you sell it, it's a 5% commission.
- 13:41So there's no barrier to entry right now, we have people who either already
- 13:44sell on eBay or are a little more robust and they have things in databases.
- 13:48Those are our biggest sellers because we can just import their database
- 13:52and list their parts with it.
- 13:54If they have it in some sort of inventory management system, we can
- 13:57adapt that into our system, which is great, and that's the fastest thing.
- 14:01You can do it on an individual basis.
- 14:03It just takes a little bit of time and I've done it and it's not that hard.
- 14:06It just takes a few minutes to snap some pictures and create a listing.
- 14:09But five minutes or 10 minutes per item, it adds up.
- 14:12If you have a pretty big collection, if you know you have a few boxes
- 14:15of stuff, that's a easy job.
- 14:17But if you have a big shelf rack system in the back of your garage,
- 14:20that's gonna take a lot longer.
- 14:22Uh, one thing that we hear people doing is they get their kids, or,
- 14:25you know, there, there's a guy who runs a, a shop around here.
- 14:29He has a guy who he pays the cleanest shop and then he said, Hey, I'm gonna
- 14:32put parts over here and you take pictures and list them and I'll pay you.
- 14:36You know what we earn off of it.
- 14:38And that guy was like, very entrepreneurial.
- 14:40Got into it.
- 14:40So what we ultimately want to do is have more of a white glove system where if
- 14:45someone needs some help listing their parts, we can actually help them do it.
- 14:49We'll send some people to their site.
- 14:51Again, this is a future state, but hey, we can send somebody into your garage or
- 14:55an estate sale or whatever and get all those parts listed and we can list them
- 14:59for sale or we can auction 'em off and then have them go away in one fell swoop.
- 15:03We're gonna have lots of flexibility in how we sell these parts because
- 15:07our whole mission is how they get sold or need to be listed.
- 15:11We have a way to do it for anybody in this industry, whether you've been around
- 15:15a long time or you're just new to it, and however it fits into your life,
- 15:20because newer people are getting into these cars, and I love it when I go to
- 15:24cars and coffee or shows and I see kids running around and kids are into it.
- 15:28I mean.
- 15:29That really excites me.
- 15:30But by the time they become adults and are really into this hobby,
- 15:33the world will have changed.
- 15:35It'll have turned over.
- 15:36So to me, I look at what we're doing as being the future proofing for the hobby.
- 15:40So that actually is a great segue into my next question, which is twofold.
- 15:43One, you know, we talked about the parts exchange part of the
- 15:47name, but we didn't define what the definition of collector was.
- 15:51So let's put a wrap around that.
- 15:52Is there a. Age range or year range for what collector means and
- 15:58to the point that you just made.
- 15:59Let's talk about the evolution or the EV revolution at the same time and
- 16:03how that's affecting the collector car world and the collector car market.
- 16:07You know, just to throw in there, let's talk about cash for clunkers.
- 16:10I think a lot of people forgot about that and how it rocked
- 16:13to collector car world as well.
- 16:14So let's, let's touch on this.
- 16:15Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:16Well, let's, uh, take 'em one at a time.
- 16:18What you decide is a collector car is a little subjective, right?
- 16:21But to me, I'll go with the accepted definition by the insurance companies, by
- 16:26the automobile world, which is essentially cars that are 25 years and older.
- 16:30That's ultimately the market that I wanna serve.
- 16:32All of it from the antiques to the modern classics and everything in between,
- 16:38in all countries and Mars, all of it.
- 16:40However, you can't boil the ocean.
- 16:43You've got to pick a little part and boil that.
- 16:46We've narrowed our focus initially.
- 16:48It's not exclusive to this, but.
- 16:49Our focus anyway, our European sports cars, we'll say forties
- 16:54through eighties, kind of that range.
- 16:56Again, we've got lots of stuff for domestic cars.
- 16:58We've got even modern aftermarket wheels and things like that.
- 17:02So all of those things are acceptable.
- 17:04And even like aftermarket tuner cars, I'm down with that.
- 17:07If that gets somebody excited about a car, I'm all for it.
- 17:10So if we can have CPX or that motorcycles, anything that, that you
- 17:16want to be, I'm, I'm good with that.
- 17:17I, I was at the Hershey show this, um, October and you know, I look at
- 17:23all these Model T's and Model A's and things like that sitting around and
- 17:26I've hung around with some hot rod guys and I'm like, great, I wanna be there.
- 17:30Because when I was walking that huge show, have you ever been to Hershey?
- 17:34Yep.
- 17:34It's crazy Mammoth.
- 17:36Yeah, it's huge.
- 17:37But this year, you know, it was sad because it was the first post COVID
- 17:41version and it was more lightly attended.
- 17:44But what caught my attention was it seemed like every fifth or sixth.
- 17:48Seller had something, it's like, buy all of my parts.
- 17:51Just make me out.
- 17:52Get it outta here.
- 17:53Yeah.
- 17:53Like I'm not coming back like this is my last rodeo, essentially.
- 17:57So you kind of even see a shift there.
- 17:59But anything that's in that category of cars is great.
- 18:03I think the thing that we also want to offer.
- 18:05Is not just what is defined as collectible, but what we offer in terms
- 18:10of parts, and I use that term loosely in that we've had an example where someone
- 18:15was looking for a Ferrari distributor for a sixties, Ferrari, literally a 10 plus
- 18:20million dollar car, and they reached out to us and and I went and I found them.
- 18:24An original one that someone had scrounged up in the uk and that
- 18:28was literally a $10,000 part.
- 18:30I found somebody who had a remanufactured version of the original part.
- 18:34It's a modern construction, but made in the correct style.
- 18:37But you know, again, you're getting a little, you're veering
- 18:40a little bit from originality.
- 18:41What I also want to, I say co-mingle or put on the same
- 18:45shelf or service providers.
- 18:46I know this fellow down in California who can take that exact part.
- 18:50He's an engineer and he will take it and rebuild it with, you know, more modern
- 18:54magnets and will he'll rewire it and do all of the things and it will be the
- 18:58exact part that was in the car originally.
- 19:00And that's a fraction of the cost.
- 19:02So I really love this idea of rebuilding, and I just wrote a piece about it where
- 19:07it's like the radical idea of rebuilding we're so conditioned that if a part breaks
- 19:12that you need to go find a new one and you'll spend weeks or months kind of
- 19:16chasing those down when there's probably somebody out there who can fix it for you.
- 19:20And I wanna be able to have people.
- 19:22Look at all of those options in one place and be able to choose the one that's best
- 19:26for them, whether it's originality or speed, or they want something that's more
- 19:29modern 'cause it's gonna last longer.
- 19:31It doesn't matter.
- 19:32It's like everybody has their own choice, so, well, and to that point,
- 19:35the goal in all three of those use cases is to keep that particular
- 19:38vehicle on the road and keep it running.
- 19:40So yes, if you're the purest, but you have a museum quality car,
- 19:44you want all original matching numbers, parts and accessories.
- 19:47Which by the way, most European cars, they never did a numbers matching
- 19:50like we stress here in America, which is, it's a truly American thing.
- 19:54Show me 1, 9 11, with numbers matching from any period in time.
- 19:57It doesn't exist.
- 19:58That being said, I get it.
- 19:59The purist wants it a certain way.
- 20:01For guys like myself, I frequent machine shops and fabricators all the time.
- 20:05I'm like, I don't care what it looks like.
- 20:06It needs to be functional.
- 20:07Most of my stuff is race cars.
- 20:09There are better options than the original.
- 20:11The reason that original part failed because it probably
- 20:13wasn't great to begin with.
- 20:15You know, so something to consider depending on if you wanna love
- 20:18and enjoy the car and drive it as like a daily driver versus,
- 20:21you know, a life-size model car.
- 20:23Right.
- 20:23So there's, there's something for everybody in that statement.
- 20:26Let me see.
- 20:26There were two other parts of that conversation.
- 20:28Yeah, there was.
- 20:29There was.
- 20:29And so it was cash for Clunkers and how it affected the collector car world because
- 20:33there were a lot of folks turning in buy Turbo, Maseratis and you, our Quatros
- 20:38and all this stuff saying I can get more money for this car than it's worth today.
- 20:42Which now we fast forward, you know, 10 or 15 years and the used
- 20:45car market is through the roof.
- 20:47Yeah.
- 20:47And the other side of that is now that we are in.
- 20:502022. How does the evolution or the EV revolution change the
- 20:55collector car landscape as well?
- 20:57Yeah.
- 20:57You know, I think cash for clinkers, I hadn't really thought about that
- 21:00for a while, but yeah, you're right.
- 21:01That did kind of move the needle.
- 21:03And I'd say the thing that's really moved the needle more recently
- 21:06is bring a trailer chaos online.
- 21:09Yeah.
- 21:09Yeah.
- 21:10Well, I, I think what it's done is.
- 21:14Make collecting cars like fun and cool again and accessible
- 21:17to a new generation of buyers.
- 21:19I think ultimately that's what bring a trailer's gift to the car community
- 21:23is it's, but there's also, there's a dark side to it, and I joke and
- 21:27we joke about bring a trailer a lot.
- 21:29I, I love it.
- 21:29We're all addicted to it, but the problem is it feels like how far can we push
- 21:34the envelope on these prices sometimes.
- 21:36Right, right.
- 21:36And, and you know that these, some of these deals don't end at the value that
- 21:41they, you know, that they close that.
- 21:42And I'm like, this is making it worse.
- 21:44For people that are trying to sell a more, you know, local venues like, you know,
- 21:49Facebook marketplace, suddenly they go, well, I saw an E 30 BMW sell and bring
- 21:53a trailer for a quarter million dollars.
- 21:55So obviously mine is worth 125.
- 21:59It definitely is.
- 22:01I think that'll all correct out eventually.
- 22:03You know, I I, it's like a housing bubble, right?
- 22:05A little bit of a bubble.
- 22:06And as you well know, like the collector car hobby was counter pandemic.
- 22:10Like it was one of those hobbies that soared in the pandemic
- 22:13because it was something that we could all do by ourselves.
- 22:16Let's talk about EVs.
- 22:17'cause I love EVs.
- 22:18I'm excited about EVs and I actually Haggerty in December, put.
- 22:23Their bull market list for 2022.
- 22:27And on that list was the Tesla Roadster, which is for those of you
- 22:31who may recall, it was a Lotus Elise body that they put batteries in and
- 22:36electrified, and that was the very first kind of mainstream Tesla product.
- 22:41They look cool.
- 22:42They are great cars.
- 22:43I have a friend who has one and, and I just, I had dinner with him last night
- 22:47and I said, if you're ever thinking about getting rid of that, let me know because
- 22:51I want it, I, I want it really bad.
- 22:53It's a six figure valuation now because Tesla has become something more, it's like
- 22:58the Model T of the EV world in some ways.
- 23:00So I think they're exciting cars and they're gonna be collectible, and we
- 23:04all know that back in the early day.
- 23:06There were lots of electric cars.
- 23:07So it's kind of back to the future.
- 23:09You know, in the early days of cars, there was petrol, there was electric,
- 23:12and there was steam for a while.
- 23:14They were all equal.
- 23:15And women for a reason liked the electric vehicles because
- 23:18they didn't require a starter.
- 23:19So when they were in their fancy dresses, they didn't have to get
- 23:22out and kind of like go crank the little crank arm, uh Yep.
- 23:25To turn the motor over.
- 23:26So I, I think there's two vectors where we're going in the future.
- 23:30Which is autonomous vehicles and electric vehicles and I'm excited for both.
- 23:34I think they're both important.
- 23:35I believe that you can't stop progress.
- 23:37Progress is going to happen.
- 23:39So you kind of just do with it what you can.
- 23:41It will have a downstream impact on the collector car hobby as we get
- 23:46more electrified because we're not a generational away from not being
- 23:50able to get gas, but like some of my cars, I wanna run on race fuel.
- 23:54Well, it's like there's a couple pumps in my area where you can get that easily.
- 24:00I think that's gonna be at some point, and I'm talking like 40
- 24:03years from now where that's gonna be hard, that's gonna be right.
- 24:06A bit more challenging to find.
- 24:07And I think when we have autonomous vehicles where it's pretty easy
- 24:12to imagine the interstate highway system getting to a point where.
- 24:15Take your car on the interstate and it's just running autopilot.
- 24:19So people who don't have those types of cars are gonna be excluded from those
- 24:22because one dope in a Ford Mustang cutting off an EV car or an autonomous
- 24:28car is gonna coming out of a cars and coffee, but, you know, whatever.
- 24:31Yeah, it's gonna, it's gonna break everything, right?
- 24:33All of a sudden it's just gonna be trash, so you're gonna be excluded.
- 24:36So I think at some point it'll be like national parks for driving roads.
- 24:40Like you'll have to go out into the country and, you know, have like certain
- 24:43kind of beacons and technology to help make sure that you don't mess up.
- 24:47And accidentally clash with an autonomous thing, but we'll
- 24:51see how all that plays out.
- 24:52More to your point, EVs are exciting.
- 24:55I think it's great.
- 24:56No problems.
- 24:57It's just gonna make gas harder to come by ultimately, but
- 25:01it's the right thing to do.
- 25:02I'm an environmentalist.
- 25:03I want, I think we need to make some changes and, and I'm all for it.
- 25:06One exception to that rule is.
- 25:08Do not take your collector car and turn it into an electric vehicle.
- 25:12I was wondering if we were gonna go there because that's, that's the
- 25:15other side of that conversation.
- 25:16It's an abomination.
- 25:20We talk about that quite a bit.
- 25:21It comes up almost every month on the drive through.
- 25:24Yet another British company that's converting classic Aston Martin or
- 25:28Lotus or whatever have you to an ev.
- 25:31Obviously EV West out in California has been doing Volkswagens and
- 25:34Porsches for years now using Tesla power plants and things like that.
- 25:38It's gaining popularity.
- 25:39I sort of like the idea, I see it both ways in terms of now I can be
- 25:45ecologically friendly and still drive a 1950s, 3 56 and be super cool and,
- 25:49and it's retro and it's hip, but there's the dark side of that equation.
- 25:53Which somebody actually brought up in a recent conversation, which was, yes,
- 25:57it's an abomination to your point, but also you paid a million bucks to
- 26:01turn a vintage DB six into an ev, and now that guy's left with this classic
- 26:06petrol power plant and it's sitting on a shelf in a crate for years and
- 26:09years and years, and it suddenly, it becomes cool again to have a petrol car.
- 26:14You're gonna pay for this conversion like 12 times by the
- 26:17time it's all said and done.
- 26:18Yeah.
- 26:18To me it doesn't make sense.
- 26:20I get the appeal and I will put limits on it.
- 26:23If it's a mass produced car, a VW Beetle, hey, there were millions of
- 26:27those made and they, they were made up until the eighties in Mexico and 2003.
- 26:32Yeah, 2003.
- 26:34Even better, right?
- 26:35It's like I'm cool, like if it's a mass produced vehicle, no problem.
- 26:38Committed to an ev, but taking something that's.
- 26:41Somewhat rare and turning it into an ev, to me, it takes the
- 26:46whole spirit of the car away.
- 26:47It's like that part of the experience of a car is leaving it in its proper
- 26:53state so that you can hear the sounds, you can have the correct gear
- 26:57shifts, and all of those experiences.
- 26:59It's not just the look of the car, in my opinion, it's the car in Toto
- 27:05that is really important to preserve.
- 27:07I look at them as historical objects and you wouldn't take other
- 27:12antiquities and try and change them.
- 27:14I'm not saying that they're worth that, but to me it's really
- 27:16important to keep them as they are.
- 27:18And that's just my opinion.
- 27:19I know other people have different opinions and No, and, and you're not
- 27:23wrong because it, it's been said before that vehicles, if you kind of stand
- 27:26back and look at them in their parts and not as a whole, first of all,
- 27:30you're right, they're time capsules.
- 27:32They are signs of the time in which they were created and, and some
- 27:35of those cars were created earlier than when they were sold as well.
- 27:39So you gotta kind of put that in perspective.
- 27:40But you take something like one of the cars, I absolutely
- 27:43can't stand the Ciro and Ds.
- 27:45A lot of people love that thing, but it is also quintessential French
- 27:49and also quintessential sixties.
- 27:51It is a sign of the time.
- 27:52But when you take that vehicle apart, you have to look at it for its pieces
- 27:57and to to be punny, I suppose, in that the science, the engineering,
- 28:02the aerodynamics, the fluid dynamics, every person that was involved in that.
- 28:07A car is not created in a vacuum, nor is it just an appliance.
- 28:11It is a culmination of a team of people and their
- 28:14imagination to create this thing.
- 28:16And as I dove into and worked on vintage vehicles, first question
- 28:20sometimes comes across your mind is why in the hell did they do it that way?
- 28:24And then you realize.
- 28:25This was cutting edge technology in 1961.
- 28:29And so you have to be somewhat respectful of what you're being presented with.
- 28:33And so looking at those time capitals for what they are and preserving them
- 28:37to your point is super important.
- 28:38It's also really kind of cool.
- 28:40And so there's a lot to be learned from that, but you also start to realize that
- 28:44some ideas that are presented as new even today or invented many, many years ago.
- 28:49Yeah, that's the best part of it, in my opinion, is and, and
- 28:53I loved how you described that.
- 28:54It's like they are these.
- 28:56Things, but they're also visceral experiences.
- 28:58Like hearing a inline four in my alpha is a cool experience.
- 29:03That's just part of it, and I get the environmental impact, but I truly
- 29:07believe that we use these cars so little.
- 29:11The average collector car is driven.
- 29:13About 2000 miles a year, maybe two, two miles or something like
- 29:17that, I think is what I read.
- 29:18That's negligible because I, my lawnmower em admits more than the classic car does.
- 29:23You know what I mean?
- 29:24Exactly.
- 29:24They have a reason to exist and that reason gets harmed if you tamper with them
- 29:30and kind of change them from fundamentally what they were created to be.
- 29:33Right.
- 29:34It's a philosophy.
- 29:35It's just something that I, I don't like when I see people take really
- 29:38nice cars and turn 'em into EVs, like a DB six for example, that really
- 29:43gets my goat, that's a legit thing.
- 29:46And it's been up of recent news too, that that is happening.
- 29:48Oh, I saw it.
- 29:49I saw it and I, it's like DB fours, fives, and sixes.
- 29:52I was like, just, uh, shook my head at all of it.
- 29:55But you know, this actually gives me a great opportunity to ask you two pit
- 29:59stop style questions while we're at it.
- 30:01One of which I've never asked somebody on our show, which is
- 30:04what's the best sounding engine?
- 30:06The one that I imprinted on is the Kunta.
- 30:10Oh, the V 12 Kunta.
- 30:13I think the Lamborghini engines sound better than the Ferrari v twelves and
- 30:17maybe an Aston Martin V 12 sounds as good, but I imprinted on it in watching the
- 30:23opening scene of Cannonball Run that scene the first five minutes of that movie where
- 30:29they're running that white Lamborghini down those, I think Nevada Highways.
- 30:33I never saw a car that looked like that, and I never heard a car that
- 30:38sounded anything close to that.
- 30:40As I'm talking about, I can hear that in my mind, like that noise, just
- 30:43that throaty growl and yeah, it's gotta be a V 12 and specifically a
- 30:49Lamborghini V 12 I, I wanna remind our listeners yet again that.
- 30:53Petrol heads of a certain age, the answer is always Lamborghini Kunta.
- 31:00No, it's funny because I, I didn't really like v eights for a long
- 31:04time, but now I've really come around and a great V eight sounds
- 31:08amazing, but shoot, I've got people with, I don't know, the boxer fours.
- 31:13I've owned Porsches.
- 31:14You know, those boxer sixes are pretty great.
- 31:16I don't know.
- 31:17They all, they, they're all.
- 31:18Good in their own way.
- 31:19But if I had to pick one, yes, it would have to be the Lamborghini Kosh.
- 31:23And you are exactly right.
- 31:25There's a whole generation of cannonball run heads that, like
- 31:29I said, imprinting is real.
- 31:31And that was the first like mass market exotic car that, yeah, it was even like
- 31:35James Bond movies didn't quite make the impact that that exact movie did.
- 31:39But yeah, the tester Rosas weren't nearly as popular as the
- 31:42Kunta, you know, in comparison.
- 31:43And they came out at the same time.
- 31:45So think about it that way.
- 31:46Which actually leads into my other more famous, more normal pit stop
- 31:51question, which is, maybe the answer is the same, the sexiest
- 31:55car of all time, in your opinion.
- 31:56Oh, it's similar, but it's not the same.
- 32:00Oh, okay.
- 32:01Um, I have two and they're kind of similar.
- 32:04One is.
- 32:05The Lamborghini ura.
- 32:07I went to a car show when I was a kid.
- 32:09My, I don't come from a family of car people, so I kind of
- 32:11was like forging my own path.
- 32:13So I had my driver's license and I saw that a car show was coming and there
- 32:17was gonna be a Lamborghini Kage there.
- 32:19So it's like I'd never seen one.
- 32:20So I went to this car show and I saw it, and I don't know if you've
- 32:23had this experience, but it didn't look exactly how I imagined it.
- 32:27It was smaller, it was a little more tiny and, oh, I thought
- 32:30you were gonna say the opposite.
- 32:31The first time I stood next to an F 40 i I wept a little bit, you know?
- 32:35Yeah.
- 32:35Well, GH Kunta, it's got a, the proportion and the wheel sizes and
- 32:40stuff kind like didn't totally hit me, but part of the reason was it was right
- 32:44next to a Lamborghini URA on that.
- 32:46I was like.
- 32:48It was crazy.
- 32:50Low to the ground.
- 32:51It was swoopy, it was, man, I did.
- 32:54It was wider, you know, the stance, just everything about it I thought was great.
- 32:58So if I had to pick one, I'd probably say that.
- 33:00But an Alpha Romeo Tepo 33 Strada is arguably the most beautiful car
- 33:06of, of my preference, you know?
- 33:08But now I'm gonna change one more time, which is, I love 50 sports cars
- 33:13like Maseratis and those open top road racing cars, like the original Testa
- 33:18Roses and Maserati, 300 S's and four 50 S's, and those sorts of things are.
- 33:25I will stick by my answer.
- 33:26I'll go with the Lamborghini mirror, but I think ultimately, if I had to
- 33:29pick, they're far, far less common, but the TEPO 33 Rad is right up there.
- 33:36Before we get back to our main thought here, I do have one more
- 33:39pit stop question I wanna ask you.
- 33:40And I think it's important because, you know, you came from the, the
- 33:43IT world, from the startup world.
- 33:44You're used to being in the boardroom and obviously decisions have to get made and
- 33:48you're the last one and it rides on you.
- 33:51And you have to pick between the legendary Porsche 9 59 and the F 40.
- 33:56Which one is it?
- 33:57F 40?
- 34:00Close.
- 34:05Sorry.
- 34:06I'm an Italian car guy if you haven't deduced that.
- 34:08Although I've earned own Porsches of course, but uh,
- 34:11they're both great cars to me.
- 34:13I think that those are perfect cars to put side by side and I think it's.
- 34:16It's a head versus heart thing in many ways.
- 34:19Like you look at the the 9 59 and it's like, what an amazing
- 34:23piece of technology that was.
- 34:25And the F 40, it wasn't that level of technology.
- 34:29They used F1 technology and it, it was important, but it wasn't like as
- 34:33innovative or cutting edge as the 9 59.
- 34:36They're both cool.
- 34:36They're both beautiful, but the sounds, and oh man, that F 40 is just crazy.
- 34:42So I guess we should probably get back to talking about CPX.
- 34:45We're here.
- 34:45Yeah.
- 34:45Gonna ask more head stop questions.
- 34:47Come on.
- 34:50So why don't we dive into some of maybe the more technical details about the site.
- 34:54So obviously we talked about the year ranges, so you're talking about anything
- 34:57from the turn of the 20th century.
- 35:02Up through 1997 at this point.
- 35:05I mean, that was 25 years ago, folks, 1997, which means all of my Mark four
- 35:09VWs still are not old enough to be on the collective parts exchange, but you
- 35:13know, a couple more years will be okay.
- 35:14Which actually brings up a great point.
- 35:15If a car is within a generation and the generation begins within
- 35:19that year range, does that qualify?
- 35:21Can you go up through Okay.
- 35:23And again, we don't really police it, but we don't want our people
- 35:26coming onto the site and selling what you could get at Napa.
- 35:30We have no desire to be in that commoditized business where it's
- 35:33just like moving parts along.
- 35:35We wanna be the place where you go for the hard to find, not exclusively.
- 35:40We've got a seller who sells Launch A Parts, you know, not a popular
- 35:43mark, but he's got a following and there's plenty of 'em around.
- 35:47Sure.
- 35:47If you need a water pump for it, it's not an exciting part,
- 35:50but it's a specific water pump.
- 35:52So I want you to be able to find that here.
- 35:53But if it's something that you could just go anywhere and get at any time, eh, it's
- 35:58not as exciting or not as interesting.
- 36:00Right.
- 36:00I'd rather have it be a, a more curated experience for people where they come
- 36:04in and they find the hard to find.
- 36:06Maybe something even rare though, it could be modern.
- 36:08Like for instance, in my generation of Volkswagens that
- 36:11everybody knows I'm in love with.
- 36:12You know, there's some Benetton parts that were created, very limited
- 36:15numbers, you know, things like that.
- 36:16I could see finding their way onto something like CPX because they
- 36:19were in such limited quantity.
- 36:20You know, that's important kind of stuff to have out there for somebody that's
- 36:23trying to recreate the period or trying to get that novelty part a little bit
- 36:27more about what you mentioned earlier.
- 36:29Obviously it's free to list.
- 36:30There's a 5% commission if something sales, you know, based
- 36:33on the value of the sale itself.
- 36:34So it kind of sounds a little bit like the brokering on eBay, but the
- 36:37simplicity of listing reminds me of some other sites where, take the picture, do
- 36:41your listing on your phone, submit it.
- 36:43What I'm wondering is, is everybody getting a personalized storefront, like
- 36:47an eBay, or are they connecting to their backends on the more technical note?
- 36:51How is all this orchestrated for folks that already have something in place
- 36:56versus somebody that's coming at this for the first time going, man, I just want to
- 36:59clear out all this junk out of my garage.
- 37:01Well, we'll take the second case there.
- 37:03Just the individual folks.
- 37:04You know, it's super simple to list.
- 37:06We've tried to make it as streamlined the user experience or UI in the,
- 37:10in the jargon of the tech world.
- 37:12We're trying to replicate the jitterbug cell phone.
- 37:16You know, I want it to be built for your 85-year-old grandmother could,
- 37:20uh, list parts on this site and not really have a problem doing it.
- 37:23We don't always achieve that, but for the most part, we want it to be as simple
- 37:26as as it can be from that standpoint.
- 37:29To sell a part, you register on the site.
- 37:31Then you do have to create a store and it takes five minutes to set up.
- 37:36Just have to connect it to your bank account.
- 37:38So we use on the backend Stripe, which is a very popular payment system,
- 37:42fastest growing one, super secure.
- 37:44They're great to work with.
- 37:45You just connect your bank account to Stripe, and then you're good to go.
- 37:49And if you put a bunch of parts on there, if you wanted one for GTM, you could
- 37:53create a store for yourself on our site.
- 37:56You could point people directly to that store if you want, or all of
- 37:59your stuff is just kind of generally available in this big mishmash of
- 38:03parts that are within the system.
- 38:05And then on this buyer side, we've put a lot of investment into making you be
- 38:09able to find what you're looking for.
- 38:11With the least amount of effort.
- 38:13So we've got for tech people, natural language search
- 38:16built into the system itself.
- 38:18And we've also architected the site to have the proper structure so that
- 38:24web crawlers, like Google and Bing and all of those other places can
- 38:27find what's in our site quite easily.
- 38:31So if you go and search for a part in Google, we want you to find it, but
- 38:36it'll probably be listed on our site.
- 38:38We've engineered the site, so it's got all of those properties
- 38:41just inherently built into it.
- 38:42But getting back to the selling part, yeah, you set up a store and then you
- 38:46can take your cell phone and you just go out on your garage and take some pictures
- 38:49and you start listing 'em piece by piece.
- 38:52And if someone is interested in it, they can buy it and you work
- 38:56out what the shipping would be.
- 38:57The problem with car parts is oftentimes they're odd sizes.
- 39:01And they're heavy.
- 39:02Yeah.
- 39:03Someone bought a transmission or bought a a car door, you're not able to just
- 39:06go down to the local FedEx stop and like chuck that across the counter at 'em.
- 39:10It takes a little more effort than that, or people might be overseas or they
- 39:13might be in a hurry, so you just work out what the shipping is and off it goes.
- 39:17That's the most streamlined way to get things done.
- 39:20One of the thing that I'd like to mention is we encourage open communication
- 39:24between buyer and seller, like eBay.
- 39:26One of the things that they do that annoys people is you
- 39:29can't just say, Hey, call me.
- 39:31If you even try and send somebody your email address, they intercept
- 39:35it and scrape it out or phone number, like they just disallow it
- 39:38and car parts do not work that way.
- 39:41It requires a high.
- 39:42Amount of communication to make sure that you're getting
- 39:44the exact part that you need.
- 39:46'cause you don't want to go to the effort of shipping something
- 39:49out and having somebody get it and have it not be the right thing.
- 39:52And, and then you have to either return it or figure out some way to
- 39:56figure out how to resolve that issue.
- 39:59You can talk to people openly.
- 40:00So if you, there's a part, if you look anywhere on our site, there's a button
- 40:04that says, send the buyer a message.
- 40:05And you can just, like, it's basically like chat.
- 40:08They'll get a message and you'll start talking to each other and figuring
- 40:11out what you need or call 'em.
- 40:12You know, everybody's name is exposed.
- 40:15So it's like when you're on our site, you can go in and you'll know that, oh well
- 40:19that's, um, Lancia down in California.
- 40:22If you want, you can reach out to them.
- 40:24We're pretty much trusting the universe 'cause there's some people will take
- 40:29advantage of that and just go around it.
- 40:30But we really believe that the 5% commission and all of those
- 40:34sorts of things really make the bar quite low and doesn't
- 40:38discourage people from going around.
- 40:39It's not like if we were charging 20%, people would be going all over the
- 40:43place and we'd have to put in guidelines to make sure that they don't leak
- 40:46around our system versus going direct.
- 40:49And if you're a bigger system and a bigger company, this is more than just a hobby.
- 40:54If you have an eBay store, we can take all of your eBay inventory
- 40:58and replicate it on our site and you can sell 'em both side by side.
- 41:01And when we outperform eBay, uh, you can take your eBay store down.
- 41:05Right.
- 41:06And we've got guys who are like wishing for that because eBay
- 41:10is really hard to deal with.
- 41:12Especially with car parts, they have a standard policy
- 41:15where they side with the buyer.
- 41:17So if a buyer goes, oh, they shipped that car door to me and it wasn't as
- 41:20described, it had more scratches on it.
- 41:22eBay will almost, without even talking to the seller, just like refund their money
- 41:26and take the money out of your account.
- 41:28I mean, I've heard numerous horror stories where things are happening
- 41:32like that and they're quite expensive.
- 41:34They're more probably in real dollars, like 15 or 20% or
- 41:38even more to sell on eBay.
- 41:40Whereas we're obviously quite low.
- 41:42But we're small.
- 41:43We're lean, we're mean, and we can get it done because we've tried to build
- 41:46some efficiencies into the system so we can sync up, if you have it in
- 41:50eBay, if you have it on your own site, we can take all of your inventory and
- 41:56replicate it on our site, which the advantage of that is what I already
- 42:00alluded to, which is the search engine.
- 42:02Stuff.
- 42:02And then we promote our items in Google Marketplace and other type areas.
- 42:07So people find things.
- 42:08It's funny, I had a, a seller who sells British parts out of Tennessee.
- 42:14He was starting to see a fair amount of sales coming through
- 42:17collective part exchange.
- 42:18So he looked and he only had like a few dozen parts listed.
- 42:21It's like, wow, that's like an unusually high volume given the amount
- 42:24of inventory that I have on there.
- 42:25So he started looking and he started searching for his own parts in Google.
- 42:29His parts were coming up on our site, not on his own site,
- 42:32but he's had it established for years because search engines.
- 42:36Are goofy.
- 42:37It's a black art as you well know.
- 42:39Trying to deal with that is not something that a car person wants to deal with.
- 42:42And I think that's one of the fundamental reasons, like all of these
- 42:46car guys don't have e-commerce sites.
- 42:48'cause there's a lot of trickery and expense and just stuff that you
- 42:52don't want to necessarily deal with.
- 42:54So you just kind of stick with your old ways and deal with your
- 42:57normal customers and off you go.
- 42:59And that's been good enough, but I think that's not gonna be good
- 43:02enough going into the future.
- 43:03Yeah.
- 43:03What's that saying about good enough is the enemy of greatness and Yeah.
- 43:07Yeah.
- 43:08And all that.
- 43:09So that actually makes me think of two different questions.
- 43:11One of 'em I wanna have to.
- 43:12Size the word part yet again.
- 43:14So I'm assuming it's not just water pumps and radiators and headlights.
- 43:18It could also include memorabilia, shop manuals, original things like that,
- 43:23badges and things like that you see at these swap meets, like you said.
- 43:26So that's something else.
- 43:28'cause I've looked for that myself, like some original documentation
- 43:31going back in time and that's also difficult to get your hands on.
- 43:34It also makes me think, how often do parts or new parts get listed on the site?
- 43:39And I can imagine that's very ad hoc unless there's some sort of gating
- 43:43system where you guys are verifying the part before it gets listed.
- 43:46We're on the honor system, we're, we're kind of, if someone misrepresents
- 43:50or puts junky parts in, we'll kind of see it, but we'll deactivate
- 43:54it like we've been approached by companies in other parts of the world.
- 43:58I won't name names, but you can probably deduce and uh,
- 44:01it's like, no, we we're good.
- 44:03We don't need that.
- 44:04Like, that isn't.
- 44:05Interesting to us.
- 44:06You know, essentially there's parts getting added all the time and you
- 44:11know, it comes in fits and starts, but there's always something changing
- 44:14on the site every single day.
- 44:16Whether, you know, there's parts that have gotten sold out of inventory
- 44:20'cause they only had one of 'em, or parts that are getting added.
- 44:23And we're working really hard to get people more
- 44:27comfortable with listing parts.
- 44:29So we've got some changes that I think we're gonna make on the backend
- 44:33to make it a little bit easier for people to just do things in bulk.
- 44:37The problem is like, if you think about your own garage, you go, oh
- 44:41yeah, I've got six boxes of stuff.
- 44:43How, how many do you think you have in your.
- 44:45Garage.
- 44:46I have a 24 by 12 container full of Volkswagen parts, so I got quite a bit.
- 44:54Let's see you as the Guinea pig here.
- 44:56It's like to go and list those parts, you'd have to
- 45:00take a few weeks off of work.
- 45:01Pretty much.
- 45:02It's one of my winter goals and many winters have gone by.
- 45:05Right, right.
- 45:06No, it's a, but if you can get a process going, so what I
- 45:09want to do is create tutorials.
- 45:11It's like, here's the most efficient way to list, right?
- 45:1410. Here's the most efficient way to list a thousand parts and everything
- 45:18in between, and just kinda like have little guidelines for people
- 45:21to go, okay, well here's a system.
- 45:23Like if you're doing a bunch.
- 45:24Go and take pictures.
- 45:25Just do the pictures.
- 45:26Don't worry about everything else.
- 45:28Just like go out into your container, have a little light box or whatever
- 45:31set up, and you go in, get a part, take five pictures, next part, next part,
- 45:35next part, next part, and do that.
- 45:37Those sorts of things.
- 45:38So there's just gonna be techniques that we're gonna have to teach people to do
- 45:40it, but you know, that's a big job and it's gonna take you a while to do that.
- 45:44But we've also created something called Part Ping, which is part of
- 45:48CPX, which if you have something that you can't find on the site, you
- 45:53can put out a little ping for it.
- 45:54What we'll do is go to people that we know have those types of parts
- 45:58and ask 'em if they've got it.
- 45:59Somebody who's looking for a VW part, and now actually I will.
- 46:03Include you.
- 46:04If I find somebody who needs a VW part, someone was just reaching out
- 46:07for pistons for an 84 Rocco, I was like, okay, I might know somebody.
- 46:11So, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:13It's like, I'll send it to you 'cause it'll help you and it'll help them.
- 46:16So, hey, we just want to connect the dots for you.
- 46:19The point in me bringing that up though, is until the point when you actually
- 46:23have everything listed, there's still ways for you to connect with customers,
- 46:27which is through this process and we're actually finding some success with it.
- 46:32So we wanna try and automate it even further where like if someone is
- 46:36looking for parts for Volkswagens from a certain era, or even just like specific
- 46:40submodels, like you could go and pick out, it's like if somebody's looking
- 46:43for something, I've got things for these models, so I will automatically get
- 46:47notified that somebody's looking for it.
- 46:49Are you able to designate the exact part number that you're looking for?
- 46:53'cause obviously in, in the VAG system, there's a very logical way
- 46:57that they do all that by part number.
- 46:59And so it's like, I need O2 J, da da, you know, whatever.
- 47:02And if somebody's got that, then it's easy to look it up, right?
- 47:04Yes, we, we definitely support that.
- 47:06But for you, you might not know what your parts are.
- 47:09Right?
- 47:09Right.
- 47:09You may not have the books and manuals to be able to do that, which
- 47:13was actually part of my question.
- 47:14When you're cataloging, are you guys leveraging any OCR to say, Hey, when
- 47:18I take a picture of this particular part, if the part number is recognizable
- 47:21that's being extracted by the software itself, you're ahead of the game.
- 47:25But yes, we are definitely thinking about doing all of that, which is
- 47:29optical character recognition for all of those who don't know what that the
- 47:32non nerds, I, I get what you're saying.
- 47:36You're just, you've got your pinwheel hat on right now.
- 47:40No.
- 47:40Um.
- 47:41Ultimately, it'd be great if you could just hold up your phone and point it
- 47:44at something and it would automatically recognize it, but that's a gonna
- 47:47take a long time to actually evolve.
- 47:49It may never actually come to be, but what you could do is, oh, if you know
- 47:56what it is, and even if you have a part number or something, or a serial number
- 48:00or something that you can identify it with, you can put it in and then
- 48:03it'll auto-populate what that part is.
- 48:05It'll go, oh, well, it's a Morelli O2 dash 36 slash B distributor.
- 48:12Oh, okay, well here's one.
- 48:13I've already got pictures of that.
- 48:15So you can just like represent these pictures and we'll put not the
- 48:18actual part that you'll be buying.
- 48:20You can put what condition it is.
- 48:21You could add some pictures if it's got some mods or
- 48:24damage or something like that.
- 48:26And it'll definitely compress the time it'll take.
- 48:29So to me it's important to realize we are six months old.
- 48:33We have tens of thousands of ideas that we need to execute against,
- 48:37but we're a very lean and mean team and we'll get there and do course.
- 48:42So we're, we welcome these ideas and these brainstorms because
- 48:46we've come up with very few of 'em.
- 48:47It's been ideas of others who have approached us and said, Hey, you could do
- 48:50this or that, or this system does that, you know, over here in, in this other part
- 48:54of my life, you should be able to do that.
- 48:56And, and you're right, there are like huge databases that.
- 48:59Have catalogs that we're working to get tapped into.
- 49:03The problem is those things really came into force like in the
- 49:06eighties where the parts were really systematized and had like universal
- 49:11numbering and things like that.
- 49:13That was a little bit more commonplace.
- 49:15And it can be frustrating because in the fifties and sixties and
- 49:20seventies, none of that existed, or very little of it existed.
- 49:24I think actually in the US.
- 49:25Stuff it existed, but, and the Porsche stuff, I know it did.
- 49:28They've been using, you know, 9 0 1 for a very long time.
- 49:32Yeah, exactly.
- 49:32So you kind of, you get, there's some places it's not evenly distributed.
- 49:37Yeah, I can, I can promise you Alpha Romeo was not doing any of that.
- 49:40No, no.
- 49:41Dr. Porsche was ahead of his time, but we'll leave that where it is.
- 49:43Right?
- 49:43Yeah.
- 49:44De that reasons,
- 49:48which actually, you know, we talked about a lot of what CPX is, but I don't
- 49:54think we've touched upon what it isn't.
- 49:56I'm gonna reframe one of my earlier questions to say what things shouldn't be.
- 50:02Or won't ever be listed on CPX?
- 50:05That's a great question, but I aspire to have more in it than not in it.
- 50:09Like I was saying earlier, I don't wanna become the, maybe at some point
- 50:12it'll make sense to do the parts store kind of thing, but I don't think so.
- 50:16We did episodes in the past with members of the Classic Car Club of America.
- 50:21We've had, you know, Sal finale on from Porsche Diesel and we talk
- 50:24about a collector market there.
- 50:25But that's tractors.
- 50:26You know, we recently, uh, saw an article come across our desk about the
- 50:30Ferrari speedboat, things like that.
- 50:32So does this go beyond cars in two boats and aircraft and, and tractors ultimately?
- 50:38Yeah.
- 50:39I love all of those things.
- 50:40I was really hot to trot to get a, a Greyhound bus about a year and a half ago.
- 50:45I was like, actually.
- 50:47Going out and looking at them and it's like, crap.
- 50:50I wanna have bus parts and things like that.
- 50:53Yeah.
- 50:53So I see it as being all of the above as or as much as the above.
- 50:57That makes sense.
- 50:59What I mean by that, I could even see tires, for example, being sold on our
- 51:03site, but it would be more like those Avon tires or the more specialty tires.
- 51:08We do not wanna compete with TireRack or name your tires direct or
- 51:11whatever brand you care to mention.
- 51:13TireRack does that great.
- 51:15Where someone has solved that problem, I don't need to go and resol it and
- 51:19I would even build partnerships.
- 51:21It's like, oh well if you're looking for that, hey, we tap into name your big
- 51:24auto parts guy thing and you can tap into their inventory and and do it that way.
- 51:29I'm okay with that because.
- 51:31That's good for everybody.
- 51:32Essentially.
- 51:33I just want this to be the place where you can go.
- 51:36If you need a new upholstery, you can get new upholstery.
- 51:39You can get buttons remanufactured in the future, I imagine things
- 51:43where we 3D print on demand switches.
- 51:46There's 3D printers that do metal people are building printed cars right now.
- 51:52I mean, it's a big thing that's happening using Source Forge as
- 51:55the mainstream technology that you can buy today to do that.
- 51:58That is amazing.
- 51:59And I think that's gonna be the lifeline for a lot of these cars
- 52:02because some of those super original parts, they will be non-existent.
- 52:06They just won't.
- 52:07So you get somebody who has.
- 52:09One, you borrow it from 'em, you laser scan it, you print it out and
- 52:13you've got to the mill exact copy.
- 52:16And maybe even with a better material that's gonna be more, you know, suitable.
- 52:20Now that we know better.
- 52:21I really want this to be that proverbial huge swap meet in the cloud where.
- 52:28Anything that you can imagine And automobilia yes.
- 52:32A million times, yes.
- 52:33Some people put some really cool stuff on CPX already.
- 52:36There's a guy who has some trophies that Roger Penske won when he was racing and
- 52:41he is selling those types of things.
- 52:43I mean, that's super cool.
- 52:44You would think Penske would want those back, right?
- 52:47Yeah, they, I don't think they were like his really good ones.
- 52:50So they're all the third place trophies.
- 52:53Nobody cares about that.
- 52:53Yeah, it's like the trophy and it's got Roger's DNA on it somewhere.
- 52:57But No, no, that's always fun.
- 52:59The memorabilia, what we call the auto MOA stuff, you know,
- 53:02the lifestyle stuff or even the Petroliana, I mean, all of that, right?
- 53:05It's part of the larger community.
- 53:07And to see that all in one place and have it accessible, you know,
- 53:10maybe I wanna buy a Sinclair pump along with my Alpha Romeo water pump
- 53:14housing and whatever else I need, you know, so one stop shopping, right?
- 53:18You've got a, a guy who's got.
- 53:20Neon sign on there.
- 53:21So, and books.
- 53:23I'm looking up at my bookshelves in my office and they're filled
- 53:25with car books and, and models.
- 53:27I love car models.
- 53:29One of the things, I was doing some stuff for like vintage racing, old like fifties
- 53:35style stuff and I could not find helmets.
- 53:37Those old fifties helmets, Sterling Moss, most people don't realize
- 53:41this, but his racing helmet, which is pretty iconic, was just a polo helmet.
- 53:45I mean the guy was out driving, that was the only helmet that was commercially
- 53:48available in the public at that time.
- 53:50So he races cars in polo helmet, as did a lot of the guys of the day.
- 53:53So, but they're hard to find and hey, if someone has 'em and they want sell 'em on
- 53:58on CPX, I think that's the thing to do.
- 54:00And I know you're into the racing world.
- 54:02I would love to be able to like.
- 54:03Support the racing community in and of itself too.
- 54:06Just, hey, I could definitely see a connection between you guys and racing
- 54:10junk because what do we do with race cars?
- 54:12We strip 'em down and all those original factory parts end up somewhere, either
- 54:17in a trash heap or somebody else going, Hey, I got a street car that'll go on.
- 54:21You know, that sort of thing.
- 54:22So that's a great also connection, so we're not just throwing those harder
- 54:26to find parts in the trash anymore.
- 54:28Your question of what's excluded?
- 54:29I mean, the one big thing that I will say is like, I don't wanna sell cars.
- 54:33We do have a section that we call project.
- 54:35Cars.
- 54:36So I was gonna say, rolling chassis are probably okay, right?
- 54:38Yeah.
- 54:38We've got, we've got people who have like midway through some
- 54:41sort of build or whatever and they kind of tap out or whatever.
- 54:45Or people have chased project cars and they aren't.
- 54:48So we've got a few Ferraris.
- 54:49We've got a Lamborghini chassis on there.
- 54:52Even a race car, a Maserati race car I think listed on our site.
- 54:55So if I had time and money to do it, I would, I would take
- 54:59on that project myself, but I don't at this particular moment.
- 55:02So I look at it and I go, gosh, the reason we started this this business is
- 55:07because no one was doing it and the only place that people really had was eBay.
- 55:13And eBay is still probably pretty good for cars, but it's pretty rough for
- 55:18collector car parts in my opinion.
- 55:20And the things like.
- 55:21When you search for something, you get presented with 20 sponsored items
- 55:25from floor mats to something that has nothing to do with your car whatsoever.
- 55:30It gets really hard to find exactly what you're looking for.
- 55:33'cause people game the system and it's annoying.
- 55:36That was part of the reason that we were inspired to do it, was there
- 55:39was no one doing it, or if they were doing it, they were doing it in a way
- 55:42that was detrimental to the hobby.
- 55:44And necessity breeds invention.
- 55:46Right.
- 55:46So I think you guys are, you guys are definitely onto something.
- 55:49Yeah.
- 55:49It's gonna take a while though.
- 55:50It's a, it's a big, nasty, hairy problem and I like all
- 55:54it projects are exactly right.
- 55:57So I, I've always liked the idea of call 'em unsexy projects.
- 56:01'cause there's some people, like even in business, like when people
- 56:05would go, oh man, I don't wanna like.
- 56:06Do we have to like catalog or clean out that closet or something
- 56:09like that, you know, and you know, we're a tech company and all that.
- 56:13No, that actually needs to get done.
- 56:14We're moving offices and we're, we've moved this pile of stuff 10 times
- 56:19in the in, in the last five years.
- 56:21It's like someone's gotta take this on.
- 56:22So going in and like tearing that out and just figuring out what needs to be done.
- 56:26I don't know.
- 56:26There's a satisfaction in doing something that is maybe not as interesting, but
- 56:30I find interesting, like solving this problem is genuinely meaningful to me
- 56:36and I think it's gonna be meaningful to others over the long haul for this hobby.
- 56:40And if we can create the one central place when you.
- 56:44Restoring or repairing or maintaining your collector vehicle and the one place
- 56:48you think of to go to when you need something for it, whether it's advice, a
- 56:53picture, a video, or a part or service.
- 56:56I want you to think of CPX first, and that's where I want you to go.
- 56:59I couldn't agree more, and I think what you guys are doing is
- 57:02absolutely awesome because I've struggled with this dilemma myself.
- 57:05And you know, to your point, cataloging, this is one of those things that it's, I
- 57:09I always get issued a round to it if, for our listeners that are of a certain age
- 57:13know what exactly what that is, and you always say you're gonna get a round to it.
- 57:17And it's difficult because every journey starts with a step inventory and car
- 57:21parts is one of those things that it's like, do we start with the nuts and
- 57:24bolts or the fenders and the doors?
- 57:25You know, and, and somewhere you gotta get it all done and it's difficult.
- 57:28So I'm glad you're facilitating a way to make it easier to get
- 57:32it out there to other people that need it and hopefully clear out my
- 57:35container full of Volkswagen parts.
- 57:37So with that being said.
- 57:39Chris, any shout outs, promotions, things you wanna talk about or other
- 57:42services, things that you're into that you want people to know about
- 57:45before we wrap up this episode?
- 57:46Hey, sign up for our newsletter.
- 57:48We do a weekly newsletter and I produce it myself.
- 57:52It's all kind of like a, we're a cottage industry and you know, like I wrote
- 57:56the history of Bosch fuel injections this week and you know, there's lots
- 58:00of information that I think you'll just find generally interesting and valuable.
- 58:05But go ahead and check out collector part exchange, find
- 58:08something that you want in there.
- 58:09Create an account, but also think about what's in your own garage
- 58:13and make a New Year's resolution.
- 58:15Hey, happy New Year everybody.
- 58:16It's 2022.
- 58:18Let's get in there and clean out one box of stuff in the back of your garage.
- 58:23Like if you could do that, that would be great for us and great for other people
- 58:27in the car community to make sure that some of the best parts in the world
- 58:30are in boxes in the back of a garage.
- 58:33You know, not all barn finds are cars.
- 58:35A lot of the barn finds are.
- 58:37Parts STEs that people have like hoarded over these years.
- 58:40Something that you've got is going to be valuable to someone else.
- 58:43So go and get it back in circulation so it's not just collecting dust and
- 58:48someone else can have the value of that part that's probably been created for
- 58:5150 or 60 years and it needs a new home.
- 58:54Well, Chris, I know you enjoyed our pit stop question so much, so
- 58:56I figure you know what, how about one last one before we close out?
- 59:00Oh yeah.
- 59:00Bonus round.
- 59:02May.
- 59:02May.
- 59:02Maybe two.
- 59:03Maybe two.
- 59:03I got two and nine.
- 59:04Hey, lightning round.
- 59:05Nightmare car that you would still own.
- 59:08Ooh, I've heard they're nightmares.
- 59:11In fact, I've heard never buy one, but I really, really, really, really want
- 59:15one, which is a Rene R five T two.
- 59:18Oh my God, those are so cool.
- 59:20Drove one.
- 59:21I wrote an article about it.
- 59:22It's one of those never drive your heroes moments.
- 59:25So is it,
- 59:28I'll send you the link.
- 59:29How about that?
- 59:29You can read the article.
- 59:30Okay.
- 59:30Yeah.
- 59:30I'll have to look that up because yeah, it's one of those things
- 59:33where it's like, oh gosh, yeah, you can think of lots of crappy cars.
- 59:37Like that's an easy way to go.
- 59:38Like I would never own a Pontiac Aztec, you know?
- 59:41It's like, in my opinion, all time worst car ever created.
- 59:46Oh, I love it.
- 59:47We always go to the Aztec for some reason.
- 59:50It was horrible the moment it came out.
- 59:52I don't know what someone was even thinking when they came out with that car.
- 59:57Yeah, a total nightmare.
- 59:58So if you could have a beer with, or maybe a glass of wine depending,
- 1:00:02or maybe it's bourbon with either.
- 1:00:05Clarkson, Hammond or May, who would it be?
- 1:00:08Hmm?
- 1:00:08Probably the hamster.
- 1:00:10You know what?
- 1:00:10Congratulations.
- 1:00:11You are the first person to actually select Richard Hammond as the
- 1:00:15person they would've a beer with.
- 1:00:16So now I need to know why.
- 1:00:18No, no.
- 1:00:19I think he's an interesting guy.
- 1:00:20I think he and I share a taste in cars, like Clarkson is a narcissist,
- 1:00:25and that would get on my nerves.
- 1:00:26I don't think I'd want to be around that for too long.
- 1:00:29And May is he's actually pretty interesting guy, but I don't know.
- 1:00:33I, I think the hamster is, I don't know.
- 1:00:36He's the one who's crashed the most cars I wanna hear about.
- 1:00:38Like, he's almost killed himself multiple times on that show.
- 1:00:41I mean, I, I'm down for that.
- 1:00:43It starts with, what were you thinking?
- 1:00:45Yeah, exactly.
- 1:00:46Hey guys, watch this.
- 1:00:47Yeah.
- 1:00:48Hey, hold my beer.
- 1:00:49Right.
- 1:00:50Well, Chris, this has been an absolute blast.
- 1:00:52So I wanna summarize our whole conversation here by reminding everybody
- 1:00:56that Collector Parts Exchange is putting greatly needed parts back
- 1:01:00into circulation that would otherwise continue to collect dust in someone's
- 1:01:05basement or garage and remain unused.
- 1:01:07They're doing their part to help preserve the collector car hobby and its culture.
- 1:01:12Their goal is to be the hub for all collector car repair and maintenance,
- 1:01:17where people can go for information and networking about parts, service providers,
- 1:01:21car information, automobilia, and more.
- 1:01:23So if you're struggling to find the right.
- 1:01:26Part for your classic vintage, or 25 year or older vehicle, don't wait.
- 1:01:31Be sure to check out www.collectorpartexchange.com as your
- 1:01:37source for those harder to find items, and why not make it a New Year's resolution
- 1:01:42to clean out that garage shed or shop.
- 1:01:44Upload those parts laying around and turn them into cash to buy
- 1:01:48parts that you can actually use.
- 1:01:50Remember, it's free, it's easy.
- 1:01:51There's tutorials on the site that'll help you out and get you started very quickly.
- 1:01:55And don't forget to sign up for their weekly CPX newsletter that has
- 1:01:59interesting stories and newly listed parts as part of the highlight.
- 1:02:03With that, be sure to follow them on social media at Collector
- 1:02:07part exchange on Facebook.
- 1:02:08And at CPX guys on Instagram as well as their YouTube channel.
- 1:02:14So Chris, I can't thank you enough for coming on the show.
- 1:02:17This has been an education and I look forward to working with you
- 1:02:21on future projects and listing some of my own parts on CPX.
- 1:02:24So thank you for doing this for the community.
- 1:02:27We wish you the best of success in the coming years.
- 1:02:30Thank you and happy New Year to everybody.
- 1:02:32Have a great 2022.
