- 0:00When an individual takes up a spiritual path, he has to work
- 0:05through the seemingly fine lines of distinction that the various
- 0:09prescriptions and directions for progress along the path appear
- 0:12to carry. For example, equality and
- 0:17equanimity are counselled as essential characteristics for
- 0:21progress. This leads some individuals for
- 0:24a time to take these terms to extremes that were never
- 0:28intended due to the dogmatic nature of the mental
- 0:32understanding, the desire to have a clear cut, uniform and
- 0:36neatly defined process for the needed progress.
- 0:41One of the extremes that we occasionally hear relates to
- 0:45accepting illness rather than rejecting it outright.
- 0:49The thinking goes that the individual has surrendered
- 0:52himself to the divine, and whatever the divine chooses to
- 0:55provide is to be accepted without question.
- 0:59This is a form of temasic surrender that allows any force,
- 1:04no matter how much it may weaken the being, to have sway without
- 1:09discrimination or any filtering process.
- 1:14Not every force that comes to an individual is of force for the
- 1:17progressive manifestation of the divine in the world.
- 1:21Some forces actively work to hold back that progress, to
- 1:25maintain the status quo and to prevent the transformation of
- 1:29life that will undermine their sway.
- 1:32These forces may work on the mental level, the vital level,
- 1:36or the physical level. Attacks of illness work to
- 1:40undermine the strength and stability of the body.
- 1:43For a practitioner of the Integral Yoga, the body needs to
- 1:47be strong enough to hold and respond to the divine force.
- 1:52When illness undermines this strength, it becomes an
- 1:56obstacle. It is through our conscious
- 2:00choices that we aid in the transformation process or become
- 2:04tools of those forces that want to deny the transformation.
- 2:09If we choose to accept and embrace mentally the vibrations
- 2:13of any illness, we are opening the door to it, building grooves
- 2:17of response in the physical cells and thereby making it
- 2:21easier for those vibrations to act on the being.
- 2:25If we reject those vibratory patterns, we strengthen the
- 2:29barriers against the illness and thereby support the strong,
- 2:34vibrant and receptive physical foundation needed to practice
- 2:39this yogic endeavour. Sri Aurobindo notes quote Your
- 2:45theory of illness is a rather a perilous creed, for illness is a
- 2:49thing to be eliminated, not accepted or enjoyed.
- 2:53There is something in the being that enjoys illness.
- 2:57It is possible even to turn the pains of illness, like any other
- 3:01pain, into a form of pleasure, For pain and pleasure are both
- 3:06of them degradations of an original Ananda, and can be
- 3:10reduced into terms of each other, or else sublimated into
- 3:14their original principle of Ananda.
- 3:17It is true also that one must be able to bear illness with calm,
- 3:22equanimity, endurance, even recognition of it, since it has
- 3:27come as something that has to be passed through in the course of
- 3:31experience. But to accept and enjoy it means
- 3:35to help it to last, and that will not do.
- 3:39For illness is a deformation of the physical nature, just as
- 3:43lust, anger, jealousy, et cetera are deformations of the vital
- 3:48nature, and error and prejudice and indulgence of falsehood are
- 3:53deformations of the mental nature.
- 3:57All these things have to be eliminated, and rejection is the
- 4:01first condition of their disappearance, while acceptance
- 4:05has a contrary effect altogether.
