- 0:04- Hello, we're here, you're here,
- 0:06our producers are here,
- 0:08and that means it must be time
- 0:09for another amazing episode of Pop Culture Junkie.
- 0:13I am Shauna, and I'm Olivia.
- 0:16- It is so nice to see your face, Olivia.
- 0:18I miss you so dearly.
- 0:21- I know.
- 0:22It was actually quite sad.
- 0:24Shauna and I spent our first Halloween
- 0:27without each other since we've met.
- 0:29And it was quite sad.
- 0:31I didn't have fun.
- 0:32I didn't really do fun things.
- 0:34- Yeah, I had a good time,
- 0:36but there's always that little void.
- 0:38Like, there's something missing here.
- 0:41I'm not having as much fun as I could
- 0:44'cause Olivia's not good.
- 0:45- And yeah, exactly, and vice versa.
- 0:49Yeah, and my friend, my friends that I have here,
- 0:52one was in a different country,
- 0:54and then the others aren't Halloween girls,
- 0:57and it's just, you know?
- 1:00Nah.
- 1:02- It's not the same, any of my spooky golf princess.
- 1:04- I need you to tell all of the listeners
- 1:07about your Halloween costume,
- 1:09because it was amazing,
- 1:10and I wish you were wearing it right now.
- 1:12I wanna have a party.
- 1:13- Oh, God.
- 1:14- I think my 37th birthday party,
- 1:16I wanna just base around your costume,
- 1:19and everyone has to dress up in this theme, so go ahead.
- 1:22(laughs)
- 1:23- Okay, so what's even funnier is this was what I wore
- 1:27to work.
- 1:28I got to work at 7 a.m.,
- 1:31but I was Edward Cohen from Twilight,
- 1:34if you aren't aware, in the office.
- 1:36So my coworker, who's my really good friend as well,
- 1:39was supposed to be Bella.
- 1:41This was her idea.
- 1:42- Wait, what do you mean she was supposed to be?
- 1:44Did she, yeah.
- 1:45- Oh, she could out.
- 1:45- Oh, yeah, I don't remember this part.
- 1:47- No, so it was, she was like,
- 1:51what if we're Edward and Bella, that'd be so funny.
- 1:53And I said, "Which one of us is gonna be Edward?"
- 1:56And she looked at me and I was like,
- 1:57okay, fine, I'll be Edward.
- 1:58(laughs)
- 1:59And so I get there, I normally get there before her,
- 2:04just normally, she works like later hours than I do,
- 2:07and there was a COVID scare in my office,
- 2:11like on the Monday, right?
- 2:13Halloween's on a Friday, and she texts me,
- 2:16and she's like, I feel so sick, I'm sorry,
- 2:20I'm not coming in.
- 2:21And I was like, I'm literally in full drag right now
- 2:26in the office without, she had the Jacob,
- 2:31we got like a dog balloon,
- 2:34and we had like all of the wolves faces on the balloon.
- 2:38She had all of them, and then she wasn't Bella.
- 2:41- You guys, this wig that Olivia had on,
- 2:44she looked like a mix between like Justin Bieber,
- 2:48like Edward, she was.
- 2:49- I was so many people.
- 2:50- You were definitely like the San Francisco lesbian.
- 2:54- I had definitely looked like a butch.
- 2:57It was so funny.
- 2:59So we realized that I could have played Ben Justin Bieber,
- 3:03and if I was wearing purple,
- 3:04like totally Justin Bieber in his love in era,
- 3:07which I could last me.
- 3:10Also, if I had left my hair out,
- 3:13like at the bottom of the wig, Joe Dirt,
- 3:16probably would be that next year.
- 3:18- She had glitter all over herself, you guys,
- 3:22just covered in glitter.
- 3:23It was so good.
- 3:25And you drew on your eyebrows to make them more manly,
- 3:28I noticed.
- 3:29- Oh, I was in full drag.
- 3:31I sent it to my coworker who's a drag queen,
- 3:34and I literally, he was like,
- 3:36you did a really good job.
- 3:38(laughing)
- 3:39I looked like a drag king.
- 3:40- I could lead to my dog.
- 3:41- 100%.
- 3:42- Yeah, I looked like a drag king.
- 3:44I did put white sparkly eyeshadow all over my face,
- 3:47and then I couldn't get glitter body spray.
- 3:50So I literally just got the glitter hairspray
- 3:52and sprayed my face with the hairspray.
- 3:55- Oh, God, she wrote it.
- 3:56- It was, she, it was terrible for my skin.
- 3:59- And then that night, I was a zombie,
- 4:01so I was just caking on.
- 4:04- Oh no.
- 4:05- Literally eyeshadow into every pore.
- 4:07- No.
- 4:08- For both looks.
- 4:09- No.
- 4:10- But it was great.
- 4:11I would love for you to have a Twilight theme.
- 4:13- I wanted to either be like,
- 4:14- It would be so light themed.
- 4:16- So either Twilight themed or dress up
- 4:17like your favorite vampire themed.
- 4:20So it could just be like,
- 4:21- Ooh, that's a good one.
- 4:22- And then that way I can basically,
- 4:25yeah, I can basically have a Halloween party in February.
- 4:29- Yes, well, your last birthday,
- 4:31was essentially a Twilight party
- 4:32because we watched every single day.
- 4:34- That is true.
- 4:35- That is true.
- 4:36(laughing)
- 4:37- Oh, and it was so good.
- 4:39It was so good.
- 4:39- That was so good.
- 4:40- Yeah.
- 4:41- Well, I miss you and I miss your living room.
- 4:43- Yes, yeah, it is right behind us.
- 4:46I have already decorated for Christmas.
- 4:49So I have all of the Christmas stuff planned.
- 4:52- The girl that was gonna be Bella
- 4:54is a huge Christmas person and she's like,
- 4:56- I have planned every weekend
- 4:59a Christmas themed activity.
- 5:02- I love that.
- 5:03- So I'm just going into both.
- 5:05- Okay, into both.
- 5:05My Christmas tree is here.
- 5:08You can't really see it.
- 5:09- Mine will be up this weekend.
- 5:11And when you come to town,
- 5:12we are definitely gonna do some kind of Christmas theme
- 5:16or hopping activity.
- 5:17And then I'm assuming you're coming again.
- 5:18- Not the one.
- 5:19- Not the one we went.
- 5:21- Yeah, I'm coming for Christmas.
- 5:22Not the one that we went to last time.
- 5:24- Oh no, the food was shitty there.
- 5:26They served us like delicious drinks
- 5:28but then Ritz crackers.
- 5:29- So.
- 5:30(laughing)
- 5:32- I need both.
- 5:34- I need balance.
- 5:35And by balance, I made both being good.
- 5:37- I need really good food and really good drinks
- 5:39and really good Christmas attire.
- 5:43Because it is my favorite holiday actually.
- 5:46But did you know this episode is about
- 5:49a very important holiday,
- 5:51maybe more important than Christmas, the birth of Christ.
- 5:53Friday the 13th.
- 5:55- No.
- 5:56(laughing)
- 5:58- That was a good sign.
- 5:59- Coming up on Thursday the 13th.
- 6:02- Yes.
- 6:03So we're gonna take a quick break
- 6:04and then we are gonna dive into the universe of Freddy.
- 6:08Freddy?
- 6:09Not Freddy.
- 6:09Jason.
- 6:10We're gonna take a quick break.
- 6:12- Jason Voorhees, baby.
- 6:13- Jason Voorhees.
- 6:14We're gonna take a quick break
- 6:16and then dive into Jason Voorhees universe.
- 6:19(dramatic music)
- 6:22So this episode will drop on Thursday the 13th
- 6:28and that's good enough.
- 6:30So we're gonna talk about the Enduring a Horror franchise.
- 6:33Friday the 13th on this week's show.
- 6:36Of course, Friday the 13th features
- 6:38the hockey mask wearing serial killer Jason Voorhees.
- 6:42And he's not your ordinary, uncilable movie monster.
- 6:46Like the Muppets, he has taken Manhattan,
- 6:49but unlike the Muppets, he's also battled Freddy Krueger.
- 6:53He's been to camp and of course, to outer space and to hell.
- 6:57- Boom, stung, stung.
- 6:59- Boom, stung.
- 7:00He has died and been reborn over and over again.
- 7:03And he has a staggeringly high body count.
- 7:07- Are you so dreaming him?
- 7:08- No.
- 7:09We're not talking about how many people he's slept with.
- 7:11We're talking about how many people he killed.
- 7:15(laughing)
- 7:17Olivia, what are your thoughts initially on Friday,
- 7:20the 13th and Jason?
- 7:22- Yeah, so I think that Friday the 13th,
- 7:26I mean, I am technically like not a big 80s
- 7:31slasher horror film person.
- 7:37I actually, out of everyone, probably like,
- 7:40I think the most iconic out of that time
- 7:42is probably like Freddy Krueger.
- 7:45You know, like Michael Myers.
- 7:47- Yeah.
- 7:48- Yeah.
- 7:49- Yeah.
- 7:50- I was like thinking of a--
- 7:51- Michael Myers is Halloween and Freddy Krueger
- 7:53is Nightmare on the Street.
- 7:54- I was thinking of the guy who's Austin Powers.
- 7:57- That's also Michael Myers.
- 8:00- Okay, it fell wrong at that moment.
- 8:01I was like, wait.
- 8:02- She was a different Michael Myers.
- 8:04- Yeah, there we go.
- 8:04There we go, yeah, same people.
- 8:07I mean, I think that they are so iconic
- 8:09in their own right.
- 8:10But when every Halloween comes around,
- 8:13I'm not like, ooh, I need to watch Friday the 13th.
- 8:16But I do think that he is such a persistent character
- 8:21because he is so interesting.
- 8:23And I think that the first movie is quite good
- 8:26and has a lot to say as well.
- 8:28But you know, it's a trope and horror reason.
- 8:33And if you've ever seen Cabin in the Woods
- 8:35that kind of takes on like the exact characters archetypes
- 8:39that you see within the 13th.
- 8:41We have the jock, we have the Virgin,
- 8:43we have the Sturder of the Crown.
- 8:45- The Sturder of the Crown.
- 8:46- The Sturder of the Crown.
- 8:47- The guy who's, oh, we ride back, right?
- 8:50And so, you know, we still see those made even today.
- 8:54So I think that there is something to say about
- 8:57just being iconic in that way.
- 9:00But yeah, I mean, I had seen them when I was
- 9:04probably in like middle school.
- 9:06But I don't think you had, right?
- 9:07- No.
- 9:08So I do like horror movies a lot,
- 9:11but I'm trying more recently to watch a lot of the classics.
- 9:15Like over Halloween or leading up to Halloween,
- 9:17I should say, I watched so many scary movies by myself
- 9:21while my husband was at a channel.
- 9:22- Live streamed watching Psycho.
- 9:25- I did.
- 9:25- Snap chat group.
- 9:27She's in the shower and I'm like,
- 9:29she's just taking a shower.
- 9:30A regular normal shower would nothing bad will happen, you guys.
- 9:34She's tired from traveling.
- 9:36But yeah, I watched Psycho.
- 9:37I watched Bella Legosi's Dracula from the 1930s.
- 9:42I watched Friday the 13th Halloween.
- 9:46Rose Mary's baby.
- 9:48- You would never seen Rose Mary's baby.
- 9:50- No, it was so good.
- 9:51Oh my God, I loved it.
- 9:53So I watched all of these great movies
- 9:55and I watched Friday the 13th.
- 9:56And honestly, I didn't like it that much.
- 9:59I have seen Freddie versus Jason,
- 10:02which we will get into a little later.
- 10:04That was gonna be my question for you, because I knew.
- 10:06You had never really seen the first one.
- 10:09Or it was like, was that your introduction to him?
- 10:12- I already, I mean, I knew who he was
- 10:14just because of pop culture.
- 10:15You know, when everybody kind of just knows who Jason is
- 10:18and he died, it can't crystal leg.
- 10:20But Freddie versus Jason, I think was the first one that I saw.
- 10:24I might have saw the Friday the 13th from 2009,
- 10:27but it definitely has that stuck with me enough
- 10:29for me to remember.
- 10:30So I watched Freddie versus Jason
- 10:32and then watched the first Friday the 13th.
- 10:35And I was a little bored.
- 10:36And you know, I maybe that's a controversial opinion,
- 10:40but I wanted it to just kind of get to it a little bit faster.
- 10:44- No, I think that like, you know, it is, again,
- 10:50like one of the standouts from the 80s,
- 10:53but at this point, like it is predictable
- 10:57because it is a formula, right?
- 11:00So I can definitely see how you would get there.
- 11:03- Yeah, Halloween had already came out before this
- 11:05and I definitely preferred Halloween.
- 11:08And I like nightmare and Elm Street a lot too.
- 11:10So I do too.
- 11:11- Yeah, those movies are scary.
- 11:14- You can even sleep.
- 11:15I love sleeping.
- 11:16- Yeah, I think if I had to go up against any of them,
- 11:22that's actually a really hard one.
- 11:24The one that I want to go against least
- 11:26is definitely Freddie Krueger.
- 11:27- Oh yeah.
- 11:28- I'm folks, like I will die.
- 11:30- Yeah, just from like after like a week,
- 11:33we're sleepy girls.
- 11:34We're E.P.
- 11:35- Yeah, we'd be napping.
- 11:37- Love a long nap, a very long nap.
- 11:39- A living and I hung out before
- 11:41and then halfway through the day,
- 11:42just been like, do you wanna take a nap?
- 11:44Let's just take a nap.
- 11:45- All the time.
- 11:46- And then we'll take a nap and we'll wake up.
- 11:47And be like, okay, let's keep partyin'.
- 11:49- But Sean, I can actually nap for like 20 minutes.
- 11:52I'm like a three hour person.
- 11:54But okay, so if you had to go up against Michael Myers,
- 11:58Freddie Krueger or Jason, who would you go against?
- 12:01- I would probably choose Michael Myers.
- 12:06- I think same.
- 12:08- Yeah.
- 12:09- And the series goes on, it's a little crazy.
- 12:12- Yeah, but he is kinda just a dude,
- 12:16at least in the beginning.
- 12:17I mean, in the beginning.
- 12:19- All of these guys.
- 12:20- Well, so does this one too.
- 12:21- That's true.
- 12:22- I expected it.
- 12:23- They'll kinda just start as dudes
- 12:24and then at certain point, the producers are like,
- 12:26what if they travel to space and become
- 12:29reanimated corpses who love and die?
- 12:32- If we're also putting leather face into this,
- 12:36I'd probably pick leather face though.
- 12:38- That you could take down leather face.
- 12:40- Yeah.
- 12:41- Yeah, he's just a dude, right?
- 12:42- Big dude.
- 12:43- He's just a dude.
- 12:44- That's just a big dude.
- 12:44- Definitely.
- 12:45- Big one.
- 12:46- Ghost face is always just a dude or a chicken, I'm ask.
- 12:48And like, isn't scary anymore?
- 12:50Once their mask comes off and it's just like,
- 12:52Jack Quaid, and he's like,
- 12:53"Hey, hey, I'm outta here."
- 12:55- Super clumsy.
- 12:56- You're like, very clumsy as well.
- 12:58- You're very killable though.
- 12:59For some reason, the mask makes you real scared.
- 13:01And then you take it off and you're like,
- 13:02"Oh, I have a gun."
- 13:03(laughing)
- 13:06So we are gonna break down a little bit movie by movie,
- 13:10what makes the Friday the 13th franchise?
- 13:13The order that we're gonna go in is release date order,
- 13:16which is only a little different
- 13:18from chronological order.
- 13:20Jason X is the in chronological order
- 13:25because it takes place in the future.
- 13:27Super.
- 13:28But the one that we're gonna go through
- 13:30is like, release date order.
- 13:32So of course, first we have Friday the 13th released in 1980.
- 13:36So John Carpenter's Halloween may be credited
- 13:39as kicking off the 80s, slasher, horror craze.
- 13:42But it was truly Friday the 13th,
- 13:44which was kind of an obvious replica of Halloween,
- 13:47like you said, that really kind of lit the spark
- 13:49for the genre.
- 13:50So it stars Betsy Palmer, Adrian King,
- 13:53and Kevin Bacon, like a real cuteness maybe.
- 13:56And Jason, 'cause I had never seen this movie,
- 14:01Jason's not even in the movie.
- 14:05- Yeah, this is for-- - Spoiler for a movie
- 14:07that came out 45 years ago.
- 14:10(grunting)
- 14:11- No, 35, no.
- 14:1245?
- 14:14- We're in 2025.
- 14:17- I'm sorry, I thank God for my bow talk
- 14:19'cause holding on right now, I just feel so old all of a sudden.
- 14:22(laughing)
- 14:25- Also, you were 36, you were born in 1980.
- 14:28- I know, but it was born in the 80s.
- 14:31And so it was like, wait, there's no way that--
- 14:34- There's no way that-- - 1999.
- 14:37- 1999. - 1999.
- 14:38- Oh my, my, my, my, my,
- 14:40so he's not even in the movie.
- 14:41Well, he is as like a little kid.
- 14:44And then he pounces out of the lake
- 14:47in the very, you know, final shot of the movie.
- 14:50But we don't have the famous Jason in the ski mask yet.
- 14:53It is his mother who is the main slasher bad guy
- 14:58because she believes that the camp counselors were too busy
- 15:01fornecaten and new and drugs to watch her kid
- 15:05and that he died when he drowned in the lake.
- 15:08So Friday the 13th, part two came out one year later,
- 15:13but it's set five years later.
- 15:16So it finally brings Jason Voorhees into the fold.
- 15:19He covers his face with a burlap sack and one eye hole
- 15:23and then goes on his rampage.
- 15:25So we all thought that he had died in the lake?
- 15:28No, no, no, he was just kind of a nomad
- 15:30in the woods just kind of going crazy
- 15:33and becoming a local myth.
- 15:34So part two kind of moves better pacing wise
- 15:37in the first film and has a very famous
- 15:40formidable final girl in Amy Seals, Ginny.
- 15:44- Yeah.
- 15:45And then we have Friday the 13th, part three.
- 15:48So they went from numbers to Roman numerals for this one.
- 15:53And they shifted from 2D to early 80s craze 3D
- 15:58to the third Friday the 13th movie picks up right
- 16:03where part two leaves off.
- 16:05And so these movies basically take place over the course
- 16:09of two days between part two and part three.
- 16:12Jason gets his hockey mask in this one
- 16:16and keeps it from there.
- 16:19So the hockey mask with the red triangles
- 16:20as the story starts to move away from kids camp counselors
- 16:25at a camp and ultimately any young adults
- 16:32that are trying to spend a weekend in the woods.
- 16:35How dare you?
- 16:36- Yeah, I mean, it expands the world ultimately
- 16:40and a cabin in the woods as well.
- 16:43And so you start to see him kind of in these dark,
- 16:48scary nights that aren't just the camp with a nice lake
- 16:52and a lot of things around it.
- 16:54- I mean, not really a nice lake.
- 16:56It's full of dead children, but I get what you call.
- 16:59- What lake isn't?
- 17:01Anytime I drive by Tempe Town Lake,
- 17:03I think, oh, there's a lot of dead.
- 17:04- Oh, it was a lot of dead college kids in there.
- 17:07- Yeah, I didn't.
- 17:09- My dad's rap boy is not like.
- 17:11So Friday the 13th, the final chapter,
- 17:14plot twist, it's not the final chapter.
- 17:16It is a 1984 movie.
- 17:20So the previous ones were set in 1984.
- 17:23This one came out in 1984, but is also still set then.
- 17:27The final chapter, once again,
- 17:29extends to Jason's killing spree, which just happened, right?
- 17:33So now we're on five days, I guess,
- 17:38the death of just him absolutely in this town.
- 17:41He's just on a rampage.
- 17:43(laughing)
- 17:44- He's an English.
- 17:45- He's so angrily.
- 17:46- Yes, and so Jason survives his injuries
- 17:51at the end of the last movie and goes on to slaughter.
- 17:54More hot young people, truly in 80s trope,
- 17:58and he's only to be taken down in the end
- 18:02by 12 year old Tommy Jarvis, also known as Cory Feldman.
- 18:08In a machete wielding attack that outright kills
- 18:12the illustrious Mr. Voorhees for good.
- 18:15Very died.
- 18:16- He's died.
- 18:17- There's no more movies.
- 18:18- There's no more movies.
- 18:19- There's no more movies.
- 18:20That's the end of the episode, guys.
- 18:22We'll see you next time.
- 18:23- We're done.
- 18:24- Shaz.
- 18:24- Kidding.
- 18:25(laughing)
- 18:28- What a twist.
- 18:29- Okay, so Friday the 13th, part five, a new beginning.
- 18:34- 1985.
- 18:35- So Jason's dead, right?
- 18:37What the heck?
- 18:39Friday the 13th, a new beginning,
- 18:40is one of the grotesiest, sleasiest Friday entries
- 18:44because the director came from the realm of hardcore porn,
- 18:47and that is Danny Steinman.
- 18:49So they found a way to bring Jason that quote,
- 18:52but in a somewhat cheap way.
- 18:56So it is set in 1989, the year of mine,
- 18:59Antaular Swift's birth, wonderful year.
- 19:01You're welcome.
- 19:02- Yes.
- 19:03So Tommy Jarvis is now 17 years old,
- 19:06and must deal with a new murder spree
- 19:08at the secluded youth treatment center
- 19:10that he's been court ordered to attend
- 19:13due to his lingering trauma.
- 19:16So this one didn't get very good reviews.
- 19:19Jason isn't even like the bad guy.
- 19:23Like it's kind of like a, I don't know,
- 19:25different killer who shows up in it,
- 19:27but he's part of the Jasonverse.
- 19:29I don't know.
- 19:30And he's supposed to kind of like jumpstart, like,
- 19:32oh, there could be a whole Jasonverse,
- 19:34just 'cause Jason's dead, that's okay.
- 19:36But fans didn't like it.
- 19:37- There was another kid in the lake who also came back.
- 19:40(laughing)
- 19:41There's just so many dead kids in this damn lake.
- 19:44- Yeah.
- 19:45(laughing)
- 19:46So that leads us to part six, Jason lives,
- 19:51because the fans were like,
- 19:52we don't wanna watch a Jason movie without Jason in it.
- 19:55- Mine did this one comes out,
- 19:56'19, okay, final chapter is 1984.
- 20:00New beginning 1985.
- 20:02Jason lives 1986.
- 20:04- Dude, they were just cranking this shit out.
- 20:06- Right.
- 20:07- Just cranking it out.
- 20:08They didn't even give people time to be like,
- 20:10was that really the final chapter?
- 20:11They're like, oh no, of course not.
- 20:13Next two years, but what almost have to immediately
- 20:16start your promotional scene again?
- 20:18- Yeah.
- 20:19(laughing)
- 20:19- For a movie like that.
- 20:21What is crazy is like these movies are pretty cheap to make,
- 20:26but we're so popular.
- 20:27So it's like, I guess it makes sense.
- 20:30I don't know how long a promotional cycle
- 20:32would be in the 80s too.
- 20:34That would be interesting to look into.
- 20:35I mean, we're used to these long drawn out things,
- 20:38where all the stars go on little tours
- 20:41and suck each other's dicks and cry, holding hands and stuff.
- 20:45- I'm missing that one.
- 20:47Where are those?
- 20:47- I'm in the colloquial way.
- 20:50- But maybe they do, I don't know.
- 20:52(laughing)
- 20:53In the 80s, maybe there was like,
- 20:55here's your FF in movie, here you go.
- 20:57- Danny Steinman, is that you?
- 20:59(laughing)
- 21:00I think we're like, Sindeny Arievo and Ariana Grande.
- 21:04- Oh yeah.
- 21:05- Just like all over each other's body.
- 21:07- This is weeping.
- 21:08- Yeah.
- 21:08- Me too.
- 21:09- So in Friday the 13th part,
- 21:11six, Jason Leaves.
- 21:12- Leaves?
- 21:14- A grown top.
- 21:15- Jason Leaves.
- 21:15- That would be a great sleep.
- 21:18- He's like going out on his own.
- 21:21- He just dips, bye.
- 21:23(laughing)
- 21:24- I don't know where you bitch.
- 21:25- My lasers.
- 21:27- Jason Leaves.
- 21:30Tommy inadvertently brings Jason Vorghi's corpse back to life
- 21:34because Hoomstemakas has an extra voice.
- 21:38- Hoomstemakas.
- 21:39- Hoomst accidentally resurrected the corpse
- 21:42of the Kiserio killer who's been trying to kill us for years.
- 21:45Whoopsie Daisy.
- 21:47Yes, Jason is now an actual reanimated corpse,
- 21:51complete with a rotting undead face
- 21:53underneath his hockey mask.
- 21:55Jason lives as a wild fun Friday for like that embraces
- 21:59the sillier aspects of the ongoing story
- 22:01while giving us Jason versus Tommy one final time.
- 22:06- Yeah, this is kind of where it goes off the rails
- 22:11and it opens up to us now.
- 22:13- You know, I think at this point, it went,
- 22:17we're not taking this too seriously.
- 22:20- Yeah, I think audiences, you know,
- 22:23these movies came out at the start of the 80s.
- 22:25They really wanted something different.
- 22:27Again, they were very formulaic.
- 22:29They were kind of easy to make.
- 22:30So there are a lot that was out there
- 22:32and they weren't innovating on the story a bunch.
- 22:35And so people were asking for different characters
- 22:39and this is their way of trying to do it
- 22:41but stay within the franchise as well.
- 22:43- Because fans do want Jason as Jason V proved.
- 22:47We want Jason.
- 22:48We just want him to do new and weird and silly things
- 22:51while killing.
- 22:51- Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 22:54And so the next movie that we have is Friday the 13th,
- 22:58part seven, the new blood.
- 23:01So this one came out in 1988.
- 23:04Keeps the craziness going with not just a zombie Jason
- 23:08but a telekinetic final girl for some reason.
- 23:12Maybe they were trying to be like,
- 23:13where is school is Freddie Krueger, you know?
- 23:16- Yeah, Carrie needs Jason.
- 23:19- Yeah, so we have a telekinesis final girl.
- 23:22At this point, eight years into the run, the timeline
- 23:25wasn't ultimately all that important.
- 23:27Basically this film takes place after the others.
- 23:30The 17 year old Tina, Laura Park Lincoln
- 23:33and her ability to move shit with her mind.
- 23:36Having had a traumatic event happen to her
- 23:39at Crystal Lake when she was 10.
- 23:41Since this movie is set in 1997, the future,
- 23:45her childhood bad time would have happened in 1990,
- 23:50not too long after the events of Jason lives.
- 23:53So something is up at that lake.
- 23:55You might want to,
- 23:57- You might want to,
- 23:58- Is it the fountain of youth in that lake?
- 24:01Do we need to start killing a bunch of children to get there?
- 24:03- I want to drain the lake and you want to,
- 24:05you want to turn it into the fountain of youth.
- 24:09- Well, I don't know, everyone's living
- 24:10and getting all these powers.
- 24:12- What's going on there?
- 24:13- So let's you and I jump into the lake and then we drain it
- 24:16because no one else can have our youth,
- 24:19youthful memories of Grace.
- 24:20- Oh, my God, get it?
- 24:22- I don't know, I kind of want to keep it from the whole means.
- 24:25I just want them to be like,
- 24:26"Shanna, why do you look so good?"
- 24:28I'm like, "I don't know."
- 24:29- Oh, oh, you want to be like, "I'm just this great."
- 24:34- Olivia and I are just really pretty
- 24:35and we just start killing people.
- 24:37- I love it.
- 24:39- I love that for us.
- 24:41You know, he's over his fountain of youth,
- 24:45Lake Forest area.
- 24:47- He leaves. - Jason leaves.
- 24:49- He gives us, he goes full-carry brown shot
- 24:53and he takes Manhattan.
- 24:54- Oh my God, can you imagine Jason just like walking
- 24:59kind of low down. - And it's a little...
- 25:00- Did he do it? - Did he do it?
- 25:02Did he do it?
- 25:04- We need to make this, oh, honestly.
- 25:06- Oh my God.
- 25:07- And then Freddie and Michael Myers can be like,
- 25:09the Samantha and the Charlotte.
- 25:12- I feel like Freddie would be the Samantha by it.
- 25:15- Oh yeah, he's a saliva.
- 25:16- He's a steamy favoritism coming out, yeah.
- 25:19- Oh yeah. - He's in everyone's minds.
- 25:21They're thinking about him all the time.
- 25:22- She's having everyone in her bodies.
- 25:24Well, in her body, well, he's in everyone's mind.
- 25:28- So he goes to New York.
- 25:31The change of setting had a mixed reception, actually.
- 25:34And though we didn't see Jason on the big screen
- 25:38for four years after this, which is actually
- 25:40the biggest break that we've really seen.
- 25:43They said, these promotional cycles are getting crazy.
- 25:45It does set up the events for the next movie,
- 25:50which is Jason goes to hell, yep.
- 25:53Since the FBI actually notices all of the murders
- 25:57by the end of this movie.
- 25:59- It takes them a long time.
- 26:01- They're like, we promise we're gonna kill 'em.
- 26:04- Do you guys notice that?
- 26:05- You're going to hell.
- 26:07- This same guy's been killing teenagers for a long time.
- 26:12- We should send this fucker to hell.
- 26:14- So they do. - There's a job for the FBI, man.
- 26:17- This is a job for the FBI and the devil.
- 26:20So Jason goes to hell the final Friday.
- 26:24Spoiler, it's not the final Friday.
- 26:28So after being absolutely obliterated by an FBI task force,
- 26:32Jason's evil essence in the form of demonic black blood
- 26:36escapes and possesses others,
- 26:38making this mostly a body snatcher movie.
- 26:42With one of the biggest supernatural left turns
- 26:44in the franchise, Jason goes to hell
- 26:46is set five years after Jason takes Manhattan.
- 26:50So it's set in 2003, it came out in 1993.
- 26:54Definitely one of the most polarizing films
- 26:57in the multi-decade run.
- 26:59It also marks Kane Hodder's third time as Jason.
- 27:03We'll let him do one more, we'll also allowing him to dawn
- 27:07the Freddie Glove at the very end of the movie
- 27:10as a teaser for what is to come.
- 27:13But not quite yet, because we have another one
- 27:16that comes first.
- 27:18We have Jason X.
- 27:21So Jason X comes out in 2002.
- 27:26This one's bonkers, you guys.
- 27:29This takes place in space,
- 27:31but also over 400 years later.
- 27:34The producers at this point were just like,
- 27:36screw it, just throwing things at the wall.
- 27:39He goes to space, he's been, so you got any work?
- 27:41You got a hell by and of the space.
- 27:43Yeah.
- 27:45We need Jason in the ocean after this or something.
- 27:48Where else can you go?
- 27:49Jason gets redeemed and goes to heaven and meets Jesus.
- 27:52So this takes place 400 years in the future.
- 27:57In this Friday's film's reality,
- 27:59Jason was captured and actually put on trial.
- 28:03So not a zombie, not now interesting.
- 28:06The timeline at this point is,
- 28:09it the time we don't know her.
- 28:12We don't talk about the time line.
- 28:13Okay, it's a multiverse.
- 28:16So he's put on trial, he's found guilty.
- 28:18He's then cryogenically frozen like Austin Pau is baby.
- 28:23Hundreds of years later with the earth uninhabitable,
- 28:26a cosmic science field trip.
- 28:28Lead students to a waste landward.
- 28:31Jason gets picked up, he gets unfrozen
- 28:33because everyone keeps resurrecting this guy.
- 28:36And yep, you guessed it, kills a bunch of people.
- 28:39So not only is Jason a defrosted space maniac
- 28:43aboard a giant spaceship in this movie,
- 28:46but the third act has him augmented
- 28:48with cybernetic parts and nanotechnology.
- 28:51Because why the hell not?
- 28:53Why the hell not?
- 28:55I'm not mad at it.
- 28:56- He lived, he lived 400 years.
- 28:58He learned a lot of things, you know?
- 28:59Including nanoparts.
- 29:01- Nanoparts, yes, yes.
- 29:05- This next one is my favorite.
- 29:06I'm excited for this one.
- 29:07- Yeah.
- 29:08Well, I feel like this is when, personally,
- 29:11I had really known of this character from scream.
- 29:15- Mm-hmm.
- 29:16- I'm in 90, I was born in 1993.
- 29:18So I knew about him as a character from that.
- 29:22I had seen it, but like I hadn't really been aware
- 29:26of horror movies.
- 29:28I guess Jason X came out, but I didn't really remember that one.
- 29:32- I got you.
- 29:33- I am a big Freddie crew fan.
- 29:34If you can't tell by the way,
- 29:36I just keep bringing him up in this film.
- 29:38I really, I watched Freddie versus Jason first
- 29:41and then went back.
- 29:42- Yeah.
- 29:43- And so they've all had a bunch of,
- 29:45like there's a million Freddie movies as well.
- 29:48But this is kind of like them bringing it
- 29:51into the millennial zeitgeist.
- 29:54- Multiverse of serial killers.
- 29:57- Yeah, and it's a smart idea
- 29:58because the people who were fans of either watched it.
- 30:02And you know, it was really trying to bring back
- 30:05this slasher culture.
- 30:07The nightmare on Elm Street remake
- 30:10is actually really, really good as well.
- 30:12- I like that too, yeah.
- 30:14- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:15And so this one mirrors them together.
- 30:17And it's this commentary on supernatural versus like
- 30:21root strength, like obviously Jason will not die.
- 30:25But it's more psychological versus like physical
- 30:29and like between them.
- 30:30And it's just the most ridiculous parts of both,
- 30:34like we started this episode,
- 30:35like who do you think you would win against?
- 30:37And neither of us said Jason or Freddie.
- 30:40So you know, it's bad versus bad.
- 30:45The 12th movie, which the last movie
- 30:49that came out actually, which feels wrong.
- 30:54- I know, I agree.
- 30:55- Freddie, the 13th, the 12th movie,
- 30:57it's the last movie that came out in 2009.
- 31:00It is ultimately like kind of like a,
- 31:04I would again, they're trying to bring it
- 31:06into the millennial culture.
- 31:07And portrays Jason as this murderous survivalist type.
- 31:12He has tunnels, traps, floodlights,
- 31:14and maybe also has a massive marijuana farm
- 31:18tucked away in a forest so that he can lure young adults
- 31:21into his layer.
- 31:22- Pretty genius.
- 31:24- Yeah, right?
- 31:24I would probably do it.
- 31:25- You'd be cooked.
- 31:26- Get it into logistics here.
- 31:29This isn't a remake of the first Friday the 13th movie.
- 31:33But it is kind of like a bringing in
- 31:35that same stereotypical, the stoner, the slide,
- 31:40like slasher formula.
- 31:43His mom doesn't come back,
- 31:44but ultimately it is a kind of a repeat of that story,
- 31:49but with Jason as the big bad.
- 31:51- Yeah, because I mean, I think a lot of people like me
- 31:54who maybe like millennials who didn't see the first one
- 31:57that came out before they were born
- 31:59and then rewashed it when they were older were like,
- 32:01"Wait, Jason isn't even in this movie."
- 32:04- Yeah, exactly.
- 32:05- So, and they rebelled like,
- 32:06"Yep, Jason's a bad guy, there we go."
- 32:08Oh man, that was a lot of movies,
- 32:11some better than others.
- 32:12- Yeah.
- 32:13- Yeah, like the first ones like,
- 32:16fly with the mom and grief and like,
- 32:19what they could explore.
- 32:20Like if you gave that movie to Jordan Peele,
- 32:23I think he would do a really good,
- 32:25deep job of that.
- 32:26- Just a better pacing.
- 32:27- A little bit.
- 32:28- Yeah, slasher just weren't there
- 32:31and we weren't looking for that.
- 32:33But in this kind of new age of,
- 32:35poor, it's super interesting.
- 32:37- I agree.
- 32:38So we are gonna take a quick break
- 32:40and then talk about what is next for our boy Jason.
- 32:42Is he gonna come back?
- 32:44(dramatic music)
- 32:46- After here is the Vintanglement's overrides.
- 32:50Friday the 13th is officially entering a new era.
- 32:54Per an exclusive IGN report,
- 32:56horror ink is launching the Jason universe.
- 33:01So there will be upcoming projects,
- 33:02including Crystal Lake,
- 33:04which is a prequel series.
- 33:06Yes.
- 33:07- Ooh, I would watch that.
- 33:08- Yeah, so we finally get to dive in more
- 33:10into Mrs. Voorhees, Pamela Voorhees is asked.
- 33:14And then we have Robert Barassamian.
- 33:18Sorry if I butchered that name.
- 33:19On board is executive producer.
- 33:22And Linda Cardellini has been cast as Pamela Voorhees.
- 33:26So that's kind of cool.
- 33:28We got a good name, it's Acht to it.
- 33:30- That's gonna be amazing.
- 33:31- I know, I'm so excited.
- 33:33I'm already loving Welcome to Dairy.
- 33:35Have you started that yet?
- 33:36The It prequel series?
- 33:38- No, I haven't actually.
- 33:40It's disgusting.
- 33:41It's so horrifying.
- 33:43It's more just grow test than scary so far.
- 33:46- Hmm, but I'm enjoying it.
- 33:48- Not a poor girl, but I'll give it an old shake.
- 33:52- Yeah, it's gross, but I am excited to try this.
- 33:55- I'm finally out of my book binging.
- 33:58I've been watching shows it.
- 34:00- Yes, I'm kind of out of a book bing to,
- 34:02and I'm trying to make my way through a book
- 34:04called Final Girl Support Group right now
- 34:06about a group of final girls.
- 34:08So once I've finished that, I'll let you know how it is.
- 34:10So at San Diego Comic Con 2025,
- 34:13so just a couple months ago,
- 34:14a Jason Universe themed panel
- 34:17confirmed with another sequel movie,
- 34:19as well as a Friday the 13th video game
- 34:22are both also in development.
- 34:24And there is a website called jasonuniverse.com
- 34:27that you can actually go to
- 34:29and kind of keep up to date with new Jason developments.
- 34:33So there's definitely some more on the horizon for our boy.
- 34:36He's not going to leave just yet.
- 34:39- Yeah, I think that's actually super interesting.
- 34:42I love to hear that they're already doing it
- 34:44because I do think that Pamela Voorhees
- 34:47is a very interesting character.
- 34:49And ultimately, if it is a prequel and it's that story
- 34:54and how it should become like evil.
- 34:57And then I think it also be like kind of interesting
- 34:59if she did all of that for Jason,
- 35:02but then was kind of evil to Jason.
- 35:04Like, ooh, that could be really, really interesting.
- 35:08So I'm super excited to see that.
- 35:11These movies are standing the test of time
- 35:14because they are iconic.
- 35:16I think audiences change quite a bit,
- 35:18but it's a good watch.
- 35:21It's not super, super scary.
- 35:23If you are someone who's like, oh, I don't like ghost horror,
- 35:26I think, you know, a good old fashioned slasher.
- 35:29- I agree.
- 35:30They're not over the top gory.
- 35:32I mean, maybe some of them are kind of mixed in the middle there,
- 35:35especially when with the poor,
- 35:36poor, poor director.
- 35:37Apparently that's kind of a gross one,
- 35:39but I mean, they're just kind of camp, right?
- 35:42They're good popcorn flicks for you watch with your friends.
- 35:44- Camp.
- 35:45- Yes, camp and a camp.
- 35:47They're silly, they're popcorn flicks, they're fun.
- 35:50And I want to go ahead and watch more of them.
- 35:53I also think we should do an episode in the future
- 35:55where we break down the Freddie movies
- 35:57because we apparently both like those even more.
- 35:59- Yeah, we should definitely do that.
- 36:01- Right, that's it.
- 36:01- Right, that's it.
- 36:02- Right, that's it.
- 36:03Right, that's it.
- 36:04- I love the Freddie movies.
- 36:05They're so good.
- 36:06And he's such a like a...
