- 1:57Speaker 2: detective sergeant. You're assigned to robbery detail. A jewelry salesman
- 2:02Speaker 2: is slugged and robbed of twenty thousand dollars in precious stones.
- 2:06Speaker 2: After months of investigation, you'll finally discover the man responsible
- 2:09Speaker 2: for the hold up. You've got the evidence to prove
- 2:11Speaker 2: him guilty.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Your job bring him.
- 2:14Speaker 4: In Dragnet the document a drama of an actual crime.
- 2:28Speaker 4: For the next thirty minutes, in cooperation with the Los
- 2:30Speaker 4: Angeles Police Department, you will travel step by step on
- 2:34Speaker 4: the side of the law through an actual case transcribed
- 2:36Speaker 4: from official police violence, from beginning to end, from crime
- 2:40Speaker 4: to punishment. Dragnet is the story of your police force
- 2:44Speaker 4: in action.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Course.
- 2:50Speaker 6: Thursday, July eighteenth was sultry in Los Angeles. We were
- 2:53Speaker 6: working the day watch out of Robbery Detail. My partner's
- 2:56Speaker 6: Ed Jacobs. The boss is Captain Dideon. My name is Friday.
- 2:59Speaker 6: It was one thirty five pm when we got back
- 3:01Speaker 6: to the City Hall, the interrogation room, is it not,
- 3:05Speaker 6: mister Garvey, Yes, sir, you want to call a captain.
- 3:09Speaker 6: They'd let him know where back.
- 3:10Speaker 7: Okay, I'd still like to know what this is all about.
- 3:13Speaker 7: Sorry and dragging me down here in the middle of
- 3:14Speaker 7: the day. I've got an office system.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I just got back. Good you had interrogation room, right,
- 3:21Speaker 3: let us check in you. Yeah, I'm back workd out time.
- 3:24Speaker 7: Would you please explain what this is about? Why you
- 3:27Speaker 7: brought me down here? We think you know what I don't.
- 3:29Speaker 7: I haven't any idea. Take me away from my store
- 3:32Speaker 7: on a busy day, you put a police guard on it,
- 3:34Speaker 7: you insist on bringing me down here.
- 3:35Speaker 6: What's it all about? Tell me you tell us, mister Garvey,
- 3:38Speaker 6: tell you about what but jewel robbery nine months ago?
- 3:40Speaker 8: That hold up? What hold up?
- 3:41Speaker 5: My store hasn't been.
- 3:42Speaker 6: Talking about your friend Thomas Ashley?
- 3:44Speaker 5: Ashley, what about him?
- 3:45Speaker 3: I think you remember it nine months ago, parking lot
- 3:47Speaker 3: back of the building down on Poyt Street.
- 3:49Speaker 7: Oh sure, some hold up man slugged him just to
- 3:51Speaker 7: all his cases samples. I remember it now.
- 3:54Speaker 3: For a time.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Thief made a big haul, didn't.
- 3:56Speaker 3: He unset down? It was twenty thousand dollars worth.
- 3:58Speaker 5: I remember it now. I don't think Tom's gotten over it. Yeah.
- 4:01Speaker 7: It was a jewelry salesman for the same company at
- 4:03Speaker 7: the time, you know, same company Tom was working for him. Yeah,
- 4:06Speaker 7: some of the big bosses thought Tom had a hand
- 4:08Speaker 7: in it. I figured it was a put up job.
- 4:10Speaker 7: Nothing was further from the truth. So sure I know Tom.
- 4:13Speaker 7: He's a close friend of mine. He wouldn't be mixed
- 4:16Speaker 7: up in a deal like that. Tom and I worked
- 4:18Speaker 7: out of the same office for years. We've had him
- 4:20Speaker 7: over the house for dinner. We've even been on vacations together.
- 4:22Speaker 7: It's one of the most honest men I know. We're
- 4:24Speaker 7: sure of all this, of course, I'm sure that isn't
- 4:27Speaker 7: why you called me down here?
- 4:28Speaker 4: Is it?
- 4:28Speaker 5: You don't think Tom had anything to do with it robbery?
- 4:31Speaker 8: Did you?
- 4:31Speaker 5: You don't think he was in on it?
- 4:32Speaker 3: You had nothing to do with it. I think you
- 4:33Speaker 3: know that as well as we do.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Then why am I here?
- 4:35Speaker 7: There's nothing I can tell you about the hold up,
- 4:37Speaker 7: only what I heard from Tom, what I read in
- 4:39Speaker 7: the note.
- 4:39Speaker 6: You can tell us a lot more, Garvey. We didn't
- 4:41Speaker 6: bring here just past time a day.
- 4:43Speaker 7: Tom was sluck and his sample cases stones were taken.
- 4:46Speaker 7: That's all I can kill a liar, mister. You engineered
- 4:48Speaker 7: the whole thing.
- 4:49Speaker 6: We know it, and so to you.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Was this some kind of a joke. If it is,
- 4:52Speaker 3: I think it's in very long away from a joke, Garvey,
- 4:54Speaker 3: you've planned the job, you got the loop. We can
- 4:56Speaker 3: give you a chapter in verse. I really think you're serious?
- 4:58Speaker 3: You think I robbed Tom.
- 4:59Speaker 7: We're past thinking stage, Garvey. We already told you, we
- 5:01Speaker 7: know you robbed him. Wait a minute. This thing is ridiculous.
- 5:04Speaker 7: The whole idea is ridiculous. I don't know who gave
- 5:06Speaker 7: you the so called information on me, but it's wrong.
- 5:08Speaker 7: There's nothing further from the truth. Nobody gave us the information.
- 5:11Speaker 7: We got it ourselves. You're really serious. I robbed Tom
- 5:14Speaker 7: and you can prove I didn't.
- 5:15Speaker 3: You're getting the idea.
- 5:16Speaker 5: I know what's say. It's fantastic.
- 5:19Speaker 7: I robbed my best friend Tom Ashley nine months ago.
- 5:21Speaker 7: I have twenty thousand dollars worth of diamonds, and you
- 5:23Speaker 7: can prove it, every bit of it. What about it?
- 5:26Speaker 7: I think you're out of your mind. My name is
- 5:28Speaker 7: George Garvey. You sure I'm the man you want? There
- 5:30Speaker 7: couldn't be a mistake. No, there's no mistake. This seemed
- 5:33Speaker 7: to be funny. If I didn't think you were serious,
- 5:35Speaker 7: let me ask you just one question. Maybe that'll clear
- 5:37Speaker 7: it up for you. Yeah, if I held up Tom Ashley.
- 5:40Speaker 7: How is it he didn't recognize it?
- 5:41Speaker 3: You know better than that, Garvey. You didn't hold up
- 5:44Speaker 3: Tom Ashley yourself. You had someone to do it for you.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Oh, I'll cloak and dagger. I'm afraid this is getting
- 5:49Speaker 5: a little too wild for me.
- 5:50Speaker 8: Sergeant.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Maybe you can waste time making ridiculous charges.
- 5:53Speaker 8: I can.
- 5:53Speaker 5: I'm going back to my store.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Weak bluff mistress, not gonna do it.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Excuse me?
- 5:57Speaker 7: Are you sure you two men haven't been drink? Mister Garvey,
- 6:00Speaker 7: I told you, and do you make my stool down? Look,
- 6:04Speaker 7: you have no right to keep me here. These are
- 6:06Speaker 7: ridiculous charges. You think I'm one of those cheap hoodlings
- 6:09Speaker 7: you used to dealing.
- 6:10Speaker 6: I'll come off at mister. You've got a five thousand
- 6:12Speaker 6: dollars car and a forty thousand dollars home. That doesn't
- 6:14Speaker 6: reach you a special treatment. You're a thief and you
- 6:15Speaker 6: know it as well as we do. I don't have
- 6:17Speaker 6: to take this from you. You haven't got much choice.
- 6:19Speaker 6: We just finished five months leg work proving it, proving what. Alright,
- 6:22Speaker 6: I sit down there. You engineered that hold up. We
- 6:25Speaker 6: know who you got to do it, We know how
- 6:26Speaker 6: it was carried out. We know how you're planned on
- 6:28Speaker 6: disposing of the diamonds. We know who your fans was,
- 6:30Speaker 6: we know what the split was, we know what you
- 6:31Speaker 6: did with part of the money.
- 6:32Speaker 7: We know how much you got left. Right, Yeah, that's right.
- 6:35Speaker 7: What can I say? I don't even know what you're
- 6:36Speaker 7: talking about. Any way you want it, mister Garvey, maybe
- 6:39Speaker 7: you'd like to tell me why I did always you
- 6:40Speaker 7: know what better than we do, you know, I mean,
- 6:42Speaker 7: and tell me you weren't making enough money at your
- 6:44Speaker 7: job to suit yourself suit your wife either. It's pretty good,
- 6:47Speaker 7: Maryland get a big kick out.
- 6:48Speaker 6: Of that, all right, So we can wait it out
- 6:51Speaker 6: as long as you want. We spent nine months on
- 6:53Speaker 6: this already. In another few days, I'm going to make
- 6:55Speaker 6: that much difference.
- 6:56Speaker 7: Just as a matter of curiosity. How'd you first start
- 6:58Speaker 7: off on this tangent? Whatever gave you the idea that
- 7:00Speaker 7: I had anything.
- 7:01Speaker 5: To do with the hold up?
- 7:02Speaker 6: When you started to spend money a new car, new
- 7:04Speaker 6: office for yourself, for a code for your wife, transferred
- 7:06Speaker 6: your two children to that private school.
- 7:08Speaker 7: And that makes a hold up man out of me,
- 7:09Speaker 7: because I wanted to send my kids to a better school.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Where the money come from. Can you explain that?
- 7:13Speaker 5: Don't you think that's my business?
- 7:14Speaker 3: Sergeant?
- 7:15Speaker 5: Where I get my money? What'd I do with it?
- 7:16Speaker 8: Now?
- 7:16Speaker 3: When you get it? Stealing?
- 7:18Speaker 7: I'm afraid you're going just a little too far. You
- 7:20Speaker 7: insist I'm a thief. I'm going to insist you prove it,
- 7:22Speaker 7: all right.
- 7:23Speaker 6: I have a look over here, mister Garvey.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yeah, some of the reports on.
- 7:27Speaker 6: The investigation reams of them. They cover everything from the
- 7:29Speaker 6: time of the jewel robbery of the late yesterday. It's
- 7:31Speaker 6: all right there, everything from the crime report to science statements.
- 7:34Speaker 5: How would that concern me?
- 7:35Speaker 3: Three quarters of the stuff concerned? You have a look
- 7:37Speaker 3: for yourself.
- 7:38Speaker 7: I still can't yet it's straightened my mind. What makes
- 7:40Speaker 7: you think I had anything to do with that robbery?
- 7:44Speaker 6: You know what this is, mister Garvey? This machine right here.
- 7:46Speaker 5: No, I'm kind of recording apparatus.
- 7:48Speaker 6: That's right, it's a tape recorder.
- 7:50Speaker 7: You've been taking down this conversation, and why no not
- 7:53Speaker 7: this one. We've been recording every conversation that took place
- 7:55Speaker 7: in your office.
- 7:55Speaker 5: For the last four months.
- 7:56Speaker 8: Every word, what do you mean just.
- 7:58Speaker 3: That, mister Garvey? Every time you talked on uphone every
- 8:00Speaker 3: visitor you had. It's all down on tape, twenty five
- 8:02Speaker 3: years of it.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Interesting. Is that supposed to frighten you know?
- 8:05Speaker 6: No, we don't care. If it's frightens you're not something
- 8:09Speaker 6: else here. Yes, the reports on what you've been doing
- 8:13Speaker 6: for the last four months, daily reports, every movement you made.
- 8:16Speaker 6: That's so everywhere you went, everybody you talk to, everything
- 8:19Speaker 6: you did want to hear sample.
- 8:22Speaker 5: This must be some kind of a joke. That's the
- 8:24Speaker 5: only explanation I can think of.
- 8:27Speaker 6: May twelfth, Thursday. Sergeant's bitter Off and rapperty Those are
- 8:30Speaker 6: the two officers who were tailing you at the time.
- 8:33Speaker 6: You checked in at your new office at nine thirty
- 8:35Speaker 6: eight am. At ten oh three am, you had a
- 8:37Speaker 6: visitor at Kenneth Tyson. You talked to him in your office,
- 8:40Speaker 6: conversations recorded. Tyson left at ten eighteen am. At ten
- 8:44Speaker 6: thirty two am, you left your office.
- 8:46Speaker 7: If you're trying to impress me, I'm afraid it isn't
- 8:47Speaker 7: working out very well. You care for a cecarectulary? No thanks,
- 8:51Speaker 7: I have my own. I've wasted enough time. Exactly what's
- 8:55Speaker 7: the point of all.
- 8:56Speaker 3: It pretty simple? You're responsible for a robbery you can prove,
- 9:00Speaker 3: but we're giving you the chance to make statement.
- 9:02Speaker 7: It's nonsense, isn't of course, people following me checking everything
- 9:05Speaker 7: I do, where I spend my money, where I send
- 9:07Speaker 7: my kids to school.
- 9:08Speaker 5: What's it all about? It doesn't make any sense, all.
- 9:11Speaker 7: Right, christer Garvey. We've said it before. We can wait
- 9:13Speaker 7: it out as long as you want. Look, let's get
- 9:16Speaker 7: this thing straight. Let's go back to the beginning and
- 9:17Speaker 7: take it step by step.
- 9:19Speaker 6: That's fine.
- 9:19Speaker 5: The whole up was last fall, but sometime in October.
- 9:22Speaker 3: October seventh, Monday twenty in the afternoon.
- 9:24Speaker 7: All right, now, just what am I supposed to have done?
- 9:26Speaker 7: None of your vague references about a new coach for
- 9:28Speaker 7: my wife or where I send my kids to school.
- 9:30Speaker 7: Let's have some facts yo.
- 9:33Speaker 6: All right, mister Garvin. You went to work as a
- 9:36Speaker 6: jewelry salesman for the company ten years ago. Your friend
- 9:39Speaker 6: Tom Ashley, the victims, started the same year. The two
- 9:41Speaker 6: of you have been pretty close friends.
- 9:42Speaker 8: That's right.
- 9:43Speaker 6: I told you that I will skip the rest of
- 9:44Speaker 6: your background for now. Two weeks before the robbery, on
- 9:49Speaker 6: September twenty fourth, we had a meeting with Kenneth Tyson.
- 9:51Speaker 6: You met in the cafeteria on South Broadway. Tyson's nineteen
- 9:54Speaker 6: years old, lives with an older sister. He works in
- 9:57Speaker 6: the Gas States Olympic Boulevard, has done some work.
- 10:00Speaker 8: We're careful.
- 10:00Speaker 7: That's how you have to know him. Yes, I think
- 10:02Speaker 7: I remember the boy. I don't know him well, though,
- 10:04Speaker 7: I don't recall the meeting.
- 10:05Speaker 6: No, you know the boy very well. The time of
- 10:07Speaker 6: the meeting, you promised him a thousand dollars I could
- 10:09Speaker 6: hold up your friend Tom actually did. Tyson agreed to it,
- 10:11Speaker 6: and you briefed him on the plan. The following day,
- 10:13Speaker 6: you gave him a gun thirty two caliber Smith and Wesson,
- 10:16Speaker 6: serial number three six two seven four nine.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Sense where did you get that in from?
- 10:20Speaker 8: Tyson?
- 10:20Speaker 5: Well, he's lying.
- 10:21Speaker 7: Believe me if he told you that he's lying. Is
- 10:23Speaker 7: he the one who robbed Tom October seventh? At your direction?
- 10:27Speaker 6: He was in the parking lot behind the Hunter Crosswell Building.
- 10:30Speaker 6: Tom actually came out to get in his car. He
- 10:31Speaker 6: had his case of sample diamonds with him. Tyson held
- 10:34Speaker 6: him up, slugged him, took the stones and got away.
- 10:36Speaker 7: Of course, it's obvious Tyson's trying to say, I put
- 10:38Speaker 7: him up to it. He's trying to get out of it.
- 10:40Speaker 7: That pat not mister Garvey boy couldn't have carried off
- 10:42Speaker 7: a hold up himself.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Of course he could. It's obvious he's trying to cover up.
- 10:45Speaker 3: There were six people in the company you worked for.
- 10:47Speaker 3: We knew that on Mondays actually always took the case
- 10:49Speaker 3: of sample diamonds long when he made his calls. Only
- 10:51Speaker 3: on Monday. You were one of the people who knew that.
- 10:53Speaker 5: I suppose you've considered the other five people and they were.
- 10:55Speaker 3: All checked out at the time. They were all cleared
- 10:57Speaker 3: you along with him.
- 10:57Speaker 7: But I'm not clear anymore. Is that it this young
- 11:00Speaker 7: hoodlum tyson? You're willing to take his word over mine.
- 11:03Speaker 7: After the robbery, took the case of dimes to you.
- 11:05Speaker 8: That was the next day.
- 11:06Speaker 3: You paid him five hundred dollars and proms from the
- 11:07Speaker 3: other five hundred when he got rid of the stones.
- 11:09Speaker 6: Oh, I suppose I've gotten rid of them, or do
- 11:11Speaker 6: I still have him?
- 11:13Speaker 3: Two months after the hold up, you contacted a fence
- 11:15Speaker 3: something in San Francisco. You drove up there and sold
- 11:17Speaker 3: him some of the stones, and he broke him up
- 11:19Speaker 3: and sold him. We know where he saw him to.
- 11:21Speaker 3: We know what he got for him with this fence.
- 11:23Speaker 3: He's supposed to be another good friend of mine.
- 11:24Speaker 7: He's still doing business with him. His name is Fred Lawrence,
- 11:27Speaker 7: who went on me. I don't know any Fred Lawrence.
- 11:29Speaker 7: Can't even recall the name.
- 11:31Speaker 6: Now, maybe this will help you, mister Garvey. Listen to
- 11:33Speaker 6: him little teeth recorder. It's reel four in the day.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'll labeled there right on the.
- 11:38Speaker 6: Back of the black Yeah, you're with.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Well, what's all this about?
- 11:44Speaker 6: Phone conversation, mister Garvey. One of the things were recorded
- 11:47Speaker 6: from your office. I told you about it before. Let's
- 11:51Speaker 6: see this one was on March eighteenth.
- 11:53Speaker 7: I always thought wiretapping was against the law, or do
- 11:55Speaker 7: you pay any attention to that?
- 11:57Speaker 3: He didn't have your telephone line. We recorded everything. Come
- 11:59Speaker 3: to take the grabb installed in your store and back
- 12:01Speaker 3: in your office. They started recording the day you moved in,
- 12:03Speaker 3: and that was the first to March, wasn't.
- 12:04Speaker 5: I don't know why you're telling me. I can sue
- 12:06Speaker 5: you for that.
- 12:07Speaker 6: You know, I can sue you for your last dollar
- 12:09Speaker 6: all working sermons? Right now? Is Fred Lawrence? You say
- 12:12Speaker 6: you don't know what t Have you listened to this?
- 12:15Speaker 6: This is recorded March eighteenth in your office? Okay, here
- 12:20Speaker 6: we go.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm right?
- 12:26Speaker 6: Is the Lawrence?
- 12:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 12:28Speaker 8: Sure?
- 12:28Speaker 3: Put money?
- 12:31Speaker 6: Hi Fred?
- 12:31Speaker 3: How are you.
- 12:33Speaker 8: Good? No? Are they fine?
- 12:35Speaker 3: No?
- 12:35Speaker 8: He at all Ie? No, he's all right.
- 12:39Speaker 6: I believe he's a good kid. Nice alright? Where Oh,
- 12:45Speaker 6: I know it might not be so good as you've
- 12:47Speaker 6: seen down here?
- 12:49Speaker 3: Only your clock?
- 12:49Speaker 5: Are you thirty?
- 12:51Speaker 8: Okay? Fine?
- 12:51Speaker 6: Close a thirty?
- 12:52Speaker 3: Is you like?
- 12:53Speaker 8: Like?
- 12:54Speaker 6: Like mister Gary?
- 12:56Speaker 3: You recognize that? How about it?
- 13:00Speaker 7: Guard? I understand they can do clever things with tape
- 13:03Speaker 7: recorders nowadays. There's a way of piecing words together.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Is in there.
- 13:06Speaker 7: They can record your voice and then fix the tape.
- 13:08Speaker 7: Take a simple sentence and change the words around me
- 13:10Speaker 7: in just the opposite cam.
- 13:11Speaker 3: You examine the tape, if you liked it, didn't make
- 13:13Speaker 3: a splice in or tell you'll find it the usual
- 13:15Speaker 3: factory splice it just where it comes from the manufacturer.
- 13:17Speaker 5: What difference does it make?
- 13:18Speaker 3: Anyway?
- 13:18Speaker 5: There's nothing criminal about that conversation, nothing at all.
- 13:21Speaker 3: You told us a few minutes ago you didn't know
- 13:22Speaker 3: Fred Lawrence. You never heard of him on that recording.
- 13:24Speaker 3: It sounds like you know him pretty well.
- 13:25Speaker 7: It's a fairly common name, wouldn't you say, must be
- 13:28Speaker 7: quite a few Fred Lawrence's.
- 13:29Speaker 5: I didn't happen to remember the name right off.
- 13:33Speaker 6: How about Tyson? Tyson? He told us you didn't know
- 13:36Speaker 6: him well at all. I don't well, I didn't sound
- 13:38Speaker 6: that way on that tape, did it. If you were
- 13:39Speaker 6: telling Lawrence that he was all right? You said, believe me,
- 13:42Speaker 6: he's a good kid. Now what you said to How
- 13:44Speaker 6: about it?
- 13:45Speaker 8: Mass?
- 13:45Speaker 6: How about?
- 13:45Speaker 5: What is this some kind of a frame? What are
- 13:47Speaker 5: you trying to make me say?
- 13:48Speaker 3: We're not going to make you say anything, Garvey. We
- 13:50Speaker 3: work robbery detail. That's a job robberies. They pay us
- 13:52Speaker 3: to clean them up. I can pay you well, never mind,
- 13:55Speaker 3: I didn't mean that. I meant I pay my taxes,
- 13:57Speaker 3: I pay your salaries. I helped you anyway. I don't
- 14:00Speaker 3: know why I have to be treated like that.
- 14:01Speaker 6: No reason to make a big headache out of this
- 14:03Speaker 6: for anybody, Garvey. Now you engineered a hold up. We
- 14:06Speaker 6: can prove that. We're giving you a chance to make
- 14:08Speaker 6: a statement. That's all we want here.
- 14:09Speaker 7: I have got nothing to say, make a statement about
- 14:11Speaker 7: what all you're going on is hearsay circumstantial evidence.
- 14:15Speaker 5: You can't say I planned that, Rob.
- 14:16Speaker 6: But do you admit you know Tyson?
- 14:17Speaker 3: You know them? Well?
- 14:18Speaker 8: I don't.
- 14:18Speaker 3: I admit nothing. What about the phone conversation?
- 14:20Speaker 8: It's a fake.
- 14:21Speaker 6: They're phoning those things up all the time. You know
- 14:23Speaker 6: it as well as I do.
- 14:24Speaker 3: You admitted you know Fred Lnes. Prove that from the recording?
- 14:27Speaker 5: I admit nothing.
- 14:27Speaker 6: You don't even know Tyson?
- 14:28Speaker 3: Is that what you want to say?
- 14:29Speaker 7: I know him, that's all. He worked on my car
- 14:31Speaker 7: a couple of times. I don't know him well.
- 14:33Speaker 6: All right, sir, to play another recording?
- 14:35Speaker 7: So waste of time. I haven't got the whole day
- 14:37Speaker 7: to spend here. I got to get back to my store.
- 14:39Speaker 7: I've got a business to.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Offer here we are April fits a lot of foolishness.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 14:45Speaker 7: How do I know you made those recordings? You could
- 14:47Speaker 7: have gotten actors. Maybe you made them up yourselves. There
- 14:51Speaker 7: weren't any dictographs. How do you make those sayings?
- 14:53Speaker 3: There? Word dictographs? Mister Garvey? Remember before you moved into
- 14:56Speaker 3: that new suite of offices, you had them redecorated. Yeah,
- 14:59Speaker 3: or sound technicaltions from our crime lay about their working
- 15:01Speaker 3: side by side of the painters and carpenters installed dictographs
- 15:05Speaker 3: in your store from back in your office. They bug
- 15:06Speaker 3: the entire.
- 15:07Speaker 7: Place wire tapping. I'll bring this into court if it's
- 15:09Speaker 7: the last thing I do.
- 15:10Speaker 6: Now, we already told you, mister Garvey, it's not wire tapping.
- 15:13Speaker 6: We didn't touch your phone lines.
- 15:14Speaker 7: We didn't have to invasion of privacy and then take
- 15:17Speaker 7: you into courtA.
- 15:18Speaker 6: Well, let's listen to this recording, right, tariff, A few
- 15:20Speaker 6: things clear up? What what are you trying to prove?
- 15:22Speaker 3: Okay, junking?
- 15:22Speaker 6: It's coming in here then missus apl fifth.
- 15:30Speaker 8: Yeah? Mary?
- 15:32Speaker 5: Oh, how well does he know him?
- 15:34Speaker 8: Inn?
- 15:35Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 15:35Speaker 8: Okay, send him back?
- 15:42Speaker 6: You got mine? I mister Gary again, how are your
- 15:46Speaker 6: money sit out?
- 15:47Speaker 8: Thanks?

- 15:51Speaker 6: Trying to get hold you last week. It is so
- 15:52Speaker 6: hard to do, yount very much?
- 15:53Speaker 3: Pretty good?
- 15:54Speaker 6: They have again in time of year.
- 15:56Speaker 5: You know what kids you do?
- 15:56Speaker 6: You know, I don't wanna waste your time like you
- 15:58Speaker 6: know how to Deal's working out though back east of
- 16:00Speaker 6: me next month. I'd like to get the rest of
- 16:01Speaker 6: my money if I couldn't. It's just like I told
- 16:03Speaker 6: you the last time. You cannot sending yourself, nor the
- 16:06Speaker 6: hope to hear it in a couple of days.
- 16:07Speaker 3: And I's what.
- 16:08Speaker 6: You told me before was a pretty heavy job. I
- 16:10Speaker 6: could use the money. I mean, it wasn't jo heavy.
- 16:12Speaker 6: I wouldn't mind that I got a com and.
- 16:14Speaker 5: I think, of course you do. Can't there's no question there.
- 16:17Speaker 6: It's just that I hadn't got it right now, believing
- 16:18Speaker 6: you'd have it in a minute to reminded you.
- 16:20Speaker 8: Yeah, but that was your agreement.
- 16:21Speaker 6: Wasn't this five hundred to fourth job? Five hundred after
- 16:24Speaker 6: and have a last October. That's a pretty good stretch.
- 16:26Speaker 8: Now I can't.
- 16:26Speaker 5: I told you the truth. I just haven't got it now.
- 16:29Speaker 6: Why don't you drop back in a week or so?
- 16:31Speaker 6: How about it, mister Garvey, what do you say to that?
- 16:33Speaker 5: It's a ridiculous thats all. It's an obvious fake.
- 16:35Speaker 3: You can look at the tape if you like inspected,
- 16:37Speaker 3: if you can check every one of those twenty five reels.
- 16:39Speaker 3: We'll play every one of them if.
- 16:40Speaker 7: You want fakes, and they're bad ones and that now, look,
- 16:43Speaker 7: I'll give you both a chance. Either you book me
- 16:45Speaker 7: in on a charge or else release me. You try
- 16:47Speaker 7: booking me in and I'll sue you for false arrest.
- 16:49Speaker 7: I'll break you. I'll see you blind. I can promise
- 16:51Speaker 7: you that, uh, release me and I'll get back to work.
- 16:53Speaker 7: I'll forget all about it.
- 16:54Speaker 8: Now you name it?
- 16:55Speaker 6: Which one book me in or release me? Oh that's
- 16:57Speaker 6: fair enough. You're gonna give us a choice.
- 16:59Speaker 7: So on, bet it's fair. You could get in a
- 17:01Speaker 7: lot of hot water. Now it's up to you which
- 17:02Speaker 7: one You ran a bad bluff? Mister, we're booking you in.
- 17:17Speaker 4: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 17:20Speaker 4: force and action.
- 17:30Speaker 6: Thursday, three point fifty five pm, Ed Jacobs and I
- 17:32Speaker 6: continued questioning the robbery suspect Ernest Garvey. Despite the evidence
- 17:37Speaker 6: at hand, he still refused to admit any knowledge of
- 17:39Speaker 6: the twenty thousand dollars jewel theft nine months before the
- 17:42Speaker 6: questioning went on. Garvey's answers became more and more confused.
- 17:47Speaker 6: We kept pressing, laying out the case against him step
- 17:49Speaker 6: by step. Four pm. Four thirty We stayed.
- 17:54Speaker 3: At it must have taken quite a bit of money,
- 17:56Speaker 3: didn't Garvey? My wife knew for a coat newcofe of show.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Where do you come from? Now?
- 18:02Speaker 6: Look, there has to be an answer. Where'd that money
- 18:04Speaker 6: come from?
- 18:05Speaker 8: Simple?
- 18:05Speaker 3: I borrowed it?
- 18:06Speaker 8: Wherede.
- 18:06Speaker 6: You borrow it, some of it from friends, some from
- 18:08Speaker 6: the banks.
- 18:09Speaker 5: I don't see how it concerns you.
- 18:10Speaker 3: How much money did you borrow?
- 18:11Speaker 5: Don't you think that's my business?
- 18:12Speaker 6: Wasn't it about seven thousand dollars? Is that about right?
- 18:15Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 18:15Speaker 7: No, it was more. Well what's the difference, it's my business?
- 18:18Speaker 7: You want to grab that folto in one of the
- 18:20Speaker 7: dark brown that's it? Huh, complete financial file on you,
- 18:25Speaker 7: mister Garvey. Took us quite a few weeks getting this together.
- 18:27Speaker 5: In a lot of work.
- 18:28Speaker 7: We must like snooping in other people's affairs, you know
- 18:30Speaker 7: another especially it's pretty dull.
- 18:33Speaker 6: There's a copy of your bank statement. It's a photostat.
- 18:35Speaker 6: Doesn't make much sense.
- 18:36Speaker 8: What do you mean?
- 18:37Speaker 6: Well, we checked your income for that month outed to
- 18:39Speaker 6: six hundred and twenty dollars and eighteen cents. Your bank
- 18:41Speaker 6: statement here shows you made deposits totaling seven hundred and
- 18:44Speaker 6: sixty dollars the same month. Now, how is that possible?
- 18:46Speaker 7: For your information? I made a loan that month. That's
- 18:49Speaker 7: probably some of the loan money I deposited. I quit
- 18:51Speaker 7: my old job. That time I was going in business
- 18:53Speaker 7: for myself. I needed the money to redecorate the new
- 18:56Speaker 7: store in the office.
- 18:57Speaker 8: It's as simple as that.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Yeah, the photostats your loan papers right here in loans
- 19:00Speaker 3: for two thousand dollars for that February for three thousand dollars.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Another one in April too, that was for fifteen hundred
- 19:08Speaker 3: different back again.
- 19:09Speaker 8: It's right.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Do we have to go over this line by line?
- 19:12Speaker 6: In three months you made bank loans for six thousand,
- 19:14Speaker 6: five hundred dollars. Besides that, in the same three months
- 19:17Speaker 6: you earned a total of seventeen hundred and thirteen dollars
- 19:19Speaker 6: and eighty eight cents. Together, that makes eight thousand, two
- 19:22Speaker 6: hundred and thirteen dollars and eighty eight cents. What's the point?
- 19:25Speaker 6: How is your bank statements, Garvey? You have five different
- 19:27Speaker 6: savings accounts in five different banks. They show from February
- 19:30Speaker 6: to April, the same three months you made deposits of
- 19:33Speaker 6: more than eleven thousand dollars.
- 19:34Speaker 8: And how to you explain that?
- 19:36Speaker 3: Jarby any explanation?
- 19:38Speaker 7: It's almost five o'clock. Can I use the phone? I
- 19:40Speaker 7: have to call my wife and let her know.
- 19:42Speaker 6: All right, we'll have to listen in on the extension.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Conversation is going to be minehead.
- 19:46Speaker 3: I don't care.
- 19:47Speaker 6: Okay, down nine to get an outside line.
- 20:10Speaker 3: What your staff did it examine? I'm garny, I see him.
- 20:14Speaker 6: You want to give us an explanation. You only get
- 20:16Speaker 6: eighty two hundred dollars? How could you bank eleven thousand?
- 20:19Speaker 6: It had to come from somewhere, didn't It? Surely a
- 20:21Speaker 6: personal matter, that's all.
- 20:22Speaker 7: I borrowed three thousand from a brother of mine lives
- 20:24Speaker 7: back in Minnesota.
- 20:25Speaker 3: It already made three loans. What you have to borrow
- 20:27Speaker 3: from your brother? You mind telling us?
- 20:28Speaker 5: Yes, as a matter of fact, I do.
- 20:30Speaker 6: It still doesn't balance the books. Mister Garvey, you earned
- 20:33Speaker 6: and borrowed eighty two hundred dollars. You got another three
- 20:35Speaker 6: thousand from your brother. You say that's eleven thousand, two hundred.
- 20:38Speaker 6: You banked eleven thousand dollars. Yes, that's right. You always
- 20:41Speaker 6: have to repeat I did leave you with two hundred dollars.
- 20:45Speaker 6: You and your family lived for three months on two
- 20:47Speaker 6: hundred dollars? Is not that can easily be a lot
- 20:49Speaker 6: of people do it, yes, or but not your family.
- 20:51Speaker 6: I'm getting sick and tired of this. You're trying to
- 20:53Speaker 6: tell me you know my family better than I do.
- 20:55Speaker 6: What they eat, what they spend, what it takes to
- 20:57Speaker 6: support them.
- 20:57Speaker 3: We've been on this thing for nine months, Garvey. We've
- 20:59Speaker 3: put in a lot of you know your family pretty well.
- 21:01Speaker 3: If you like, I'll tell you the last time he
- 21:03Speaker 3: arda stake from the meat market, when you've paid your
- 21:04Speaker 3: gas bill, a last time you wife bought a pair
- 21:06Speaker 3: of shoes.
- 21:06Speaker 7: I guess this is standard procedure for you. I'm threatening people,
- 21:09Speaker 7: not threadning you, mister Garvey. We're giving you facts.
- 21:12Speaker 6: There's another file here. It took us over a month
- 21:14Speaker 6: to get this one together. Complete record of your expenses
- 21:16Speaker 6: from February first covers February March, April.
- 21:18Speaker 3: May June.
- 21:19Speaker 5: I hope the police department has a good lawyer. Sergeant.
- 21:21Speaker 5: You've got a.
- 21:22Speaker 6: Fairwell say you and your I'm sorry, go ahead.
- 21:24Speaker 7: I hope the police department has a good lawyer. Sergeant.
- 21:27Speaker 7: You've got fair warning. I'm going to sue you for
- 21:29Speaker 7: your last dollar.
- 21:29Speaker 6: And you say you and your family lived three months
- 21:31Speaker 6: on two hundred dollars, that doesn't jibe with what we've
- 21:33Speaker 6: got here.
- 21:34Speaker 7: Take a look if you want to. It's size forgeries.
- 21:36Speaker 7: It's all lies. I promise you photost out of the.
- 21:38Speaker 6: Receipt for your wife's coat Garvey sixteen hundred and twelve
- 21:41Speaker 6: dollars and thirty four cents. That includes the tax paid
- 21:43Speaker 6: in full. Photo stat of the contract for your new
- 21:46Speaker 6: car down payment.
- 21:47Speaker 8: Two thousand dollars.
- 21:49Speaker 6: Flicker bill for the big part of you throw in
- 21:51Speaker 6: March March twentieth flicker bill, three hundred and eighty seven dollars.
- 21:54Speaker 6: Catering bill, one hundred and ninety four full year's check
- 21:58Speaker 6: for tuition, room and board for your kids at the
- 22:00Speaker 6: private school you send them to. Eighteen hundred and sixty
- 22:02Speaker 6: four dollars and seven cents. That's only the beginning. Garby
- 22:05Speaker 6: comes to a lot more than two hundred dollars. Have
- 22:07Speaker 6: you heard enough?
- 22:08Speaker 5: I better try to get my wife again.
- 22:10Speaker 6: I have to let her know mad new handle extension.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Yeah all right, go ahead downline to get outside. Yeah,
- 22:17Speaker 3: I know.
- 22:34Speaker 6: You know talking. I know I'm trying to get her stupid.
- 22:38Speaker 6: We'll wait a couple of minutes. You get through.
- 22:40Speaker 7: Gavin on the phone all day long, gab on the
- 22:42Speaker 7: phone and play cards. It's else you ever done have.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Some more figures here fight Garvey would be a good
- 22:46Speaker 3: idea if you hear them built for two more parties
- 22:48Speaker 3: that through last month's food builds, Like why do you
- 22:50Speaker 3: have to keep pushing that stuff at me?
- 22:51Speaker 7: So you've been sneaking around finding out about my personal affairs.
- 22:54Speaker 7: That's supposed to be good police workers. This is the
- 22:56Speaker 7: kind of rid off of robbery, Garvey. We're giving you
- 22:58Speaker 7: a chance to make a statement. I why should I
- 23:00Speaker 7: what for give you a statement? Have you twisted around
- 23:02Speaker 7: incriminate me? I haven't had anything to do with this kid, Tyson.
- 23:05Speaker 7: I met her trying.
- 23:06Speaker 3: To call and well down one person.
- 23:08Speaker 8: I know, I know you ton't. Mm hmmm.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 23:24Speaker 8: It's a matter.
- 23:25Speaker 5: It's a matter with her stupid.
- 23:26Speaker 8: She ought to know.
- 23:27Speaker 5: I'm trying to get.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Us do some Garby, don't forget down line.
- 23:34Speaker 8: M h.
- 23:43Speaker 3: M hm. One more. I'll just play I don't want
- 23:48Speaker 3: to hear it. I'll just play piece.
- 23:49Speaker 6: I think you go to hear it's the same rail
- 23:51Speaker 6: or just fand it over there to that other.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Part, right, Tyson, mister Garvey, same place the office.
- 23:59Speaker 6: M uh but you told me on the phone, you
- 24:02Speaker 6: said you had the dough for me today.
- 24:03Speaker 3: You said to Dad shut and.
- 24:04Speaker 6: I had him annetic, And I didn't say that at all.
- 24:06Speaker 6: I said maybe I'd have it for you. I didn't
- 24:08Speaker 6: say definitely.
- 24:09Speaker 5: Look, I can't give you what I haven't got.
- 24:11Speaker 3: I want the five minute Darby I needed.
- 24:12Speaker 6: I stuck my neck out on a Robbie Jell.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I get five to light.
- 24:14Speaker 3: All right, what do you say?
- 24:21Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 24:44Speaker 6: She was never satisfied. She never couldn't be satisfied. Always more.
- 24:47Speaker 6: She always had something. You mean, your wife, playing cards,
- 24:50Speaker 6: gabbing on the phone, that's all. She just kept riding
- 24:53Speaker 6: me day in day out. I wasn't making enough money.
- 24:55Speaker 6: She didn't have any clothes. Kids ought to go to
- 24:58Speaker 6: a better school. We ought to have no how so
- 25:00Speaker 6: on and on.
- 25:00Speaker 7: I had to go in business for myself, make money,
- 25:02Speaker 7: lots of money, same thing all the time.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Talk talk talk, There's only.
- 25:06Speaker 8: So much you can take.
- 25:07Speaker 6: You figured the robbery had solved. The problem is I didn't. Yes,
- 25:09Speaker 6: So I would have tried anything just to shut her up,
- 25:12Speaker 6: get her off my back for a while. I guess
- 25:14Speaker 6: you got Tyson hunt the other man.
- 25:15Speaker 5: Too, Fred Law.
- 25:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 25:16Speaker 3: They were picked up this afternoon launch at the Airport,
- 25:18Speaker 3: Toisman and Show downtown, all three all at the same time.
- 25:22Speaker 6: What about your wife, Garby? She know you planned this robbery?
- 25:24Speaker 5: Why didn't tell her? I think she knows though, pretty
- 25:26Speaker 5: sure she does.
- 25:27Speaker 6: Maybe she'll be satisfied now allows even the money she
- 25:29Speaker 6: had to have, it didn't even leave me enough to
- 25:32Speaker 6: pay off had kid tyson, private school for the children,
- 25:34Speaker 6: wall the wall, carpets in the house, new dish wash
- 25:37Speaker 6: or new car.
- 25:38Speaker 5: Everything she just had to have. M h, you wanna
- 25:41Speaker 5: take me?
- 25:41Speaker 3: Book me in.
- 25:42Speaker 8: I don't care.
- 25:43Speaker 6: We'll stop off down the hall.
- 25:45Speaker 8: Take your statement. Sure, I don't care.
- 25:48Speaker 6: Why let's go.
- 25:50Speaker 5: I'll say just a minute it yeah, will you take
- 25:54Speaker 5: a minute?
- 25:56Speaker 6: Good?
- 25:59Speaker 8: M Yeah, that's what I'm figured.
- 26:28Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:32Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:33Speaker 4: On November fourth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 26:36Speaker 4: eighty seven, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:39Speaker 3: In a moment the results of that trial, Ernest W.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Garvey and Kenneth Tyson were tried and convicted of first
- 26:54Speaker 4: degree robbery one count and received sentences as prescribed by law.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Fred Lawrence was tried and convicted of receiving stolen property
- 27:01Speaker 4: one count first degree robbery is punishable by imprisonment from
- 27:05Speaker 4: five years to life. Receiving stolen property as punishable by
- 27:08Speaker 4: a prison term of.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Not more than five years.
- 27:20Speaker 4: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 27:23Speaker 4: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 27:27Speaker 4: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Heard Tonight where Barney Phillips, Vic Perrin, and Eddie Firestone.
- 27:34Speaker 4: Script by Jim Mosy, music by Walter Schumann, Hell Gibney.
- 27:38Speaker 7: Speaking February eighteenth, Here the Gala City Service Silver Radio
- 27:46Speaker 7: Jubilee on NBC.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, I've done the video version of this,
- 27:59Speaker 1: and I'm pretty firmly on the record that I don't
- 28:03Speaker 1: think much of the TV version that aired in nineteen
- 28:08Speaker 1: fifty two of this story. I think it was the
- 28:11Speaker 1: weakest story we have from season one because it's kind
- 28:16Speaker 1: of visually dull. It's it's a poor choice to adapt
- 28:21Speaker 1: to television. It works better on the radio, and you
- 28:25Speaker 1: do have the sort of claustrophobic feel you have of
- 28:28Speaker 1: what's essentially a three hander. Now you do have a
- 28:33Speaker 1: little bit of tape from Tyson and from the fence,
- 28:39Speaker 1: but I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually pre recorded.
- 28:44Speaker 1: You get this really sort of claustrophobic story of these
- 28:49Speaker 1: characters talking and of our man realizing that the walls
- 28:54Speaker 1: are closing in. So it's a more interesting story. It's
- 28:58Speaker 1: not one of my favorites, to be honest, even over radio,
- 29:02Speaker 1: because essentially it's about a guy who made a lot
- 29:07Speaker 1: of dumb mistakes and because of these mistakes, he has
- 29:12Speaker 1: cooked and his only tactic is to try to bluster
- 29:16Speaker 1: his way through with you know, I'm going to sue you,
- 29:22Speaker 1: And the tapes are all faked, but there is something
- 29:27Speaker 1: real about this guy, particularly in the way at the
- 29:31Speaker 1: end he doesn't really take personal responsibility, putting all the
- 29:36Speaker 1: blame on his wife, including for him not paying off Tyson.
- 29:41Speaker 1: It's all the things his wife demanded, so he didn't
- 29:45Speaker 1: have money to pay off Tyson. Forgetting that he spent
- 29:49Speaker 1: nearly the amount that he owed to Tyson on booze
- 29:54Speaker 1: from the liquor store. No, it's his wife's fault that
- 29:58Speaker 1: he didn't pay Tyson all. And truly, if Tyson had
- 30:03Speaker 1: been paid off, he probably goes ahead and leaves town.
- 30:09Speaker 1: And even if he doesn't. If Tyson were out of
- 30:14Speaker 1: his life before the police got suspicious, this would have
- 30:20Speaker 1: been a lot harder to prove, although you still do
- 30:24Speaker 1: have that financial trail. But if I'm on a jury,
- 30:28Speaker 1: the most damning piece of evidence are those phone calls
- 30:33Speaker 1: that he had involving Tyson and where he had these
- 30:40Speaker 1: conversations directly with Tyson. And that's on him, despite what
- 30:46Speaker 1: he thinks. But now let's go ahead and thank our
- 30:50Speaker 1: Patreon supporter of the day. And I want to go
- 30:52Speaker 1: ahead and thank Michelle, Patreon supporter since May of twenty
- 30:57Speaker 1: twenty one, currently supporting the pond Cast at the Shawmus
