- 0:00Tyler Johnson: I'll get us rolling.
- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels! It has been way too long for me. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I am Tyler, back after a little hiatus with my play that I was in, and across the interwebs.
- 0:21Tyler Johnson: our tag… Whoop!
- 0:24Phil: You start acting, and you're out of web fluid.
- 0:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 0:27Tyler Johnson: You couldn't hear… you couldn't hear it?
- 0:29Phil: That was, like, worse.
- 0:30Tad Eggleston: But that was, like, A, bad, and B, there are two of us, and you only made one thwip.
- 0:38Tyler Johnson: No.
- 0:39Phil: I'm gonna get away and kill your Uncle Ben now, Tyler, I'm sorry, that's just the rules of Spider-Man.
- 0:43Tyler Johnson: I will tell you, there were two thwips, maybe one of them wasn't on camera, and my beard… I got new earbuds in, so they may not be picking up the noise.
- 0:54Phil: They're not beard-friendly earbuds.
- 0:56Tyler Johnson: I don't know, I don't know, but anyway, let's try again.
- 1:00Tyler Johnson: Cross steer webs.
- 1:01Phil: Still one dot? That's okay.
- 1:02Tad Eggleston: Only one.
- 1:04Tyler Johnson: Really?
- 1:05Tad Eggleston: Wow.
- 1:06Tyler Johnson: I can't do it anymore.
- 1:08Phil: If you have an Uncle Ben, I feel bad for him.
- 1:11Tyler Johnson: Do not.
- 1:12Phil: Okay, good.
- 1:12Tyler Johnson: Alright, alright, guys.
- 1:14Tad Eggleston: Lucky for you that you have no Uncle Ben.
- 1:17Phil: Not anymore.
- 1:18Tyler Johnson: Oh, man, Tad and Phil, how's it going, guys?
- 1:22Phil: It's a… it's a weird sort of week.
- 1:25Tyler Johnson: Very weird.
- 1:26Tad Eggleston: I'm breathing.
- 1:27Tyler Johnson: Your breathing? That's true.
- 1:31Tyler Johnson: We are alive, that's good. We are… we have not been drafted to, head over to Iran.
- 1:38Phil: Yeah.
- 1:38Tad Eggleston: Probably too old for that.
- 1:41Tyler Johnson: I don't know, Trump wants anybody and everybody.
- 1:43Phil: I mean…
- 1:44Tad Eggleston: Well, except Baron.
- 1:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah, all that, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: He might, he might send Eric.
- 1:52Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:53Tyler Johnson: He's a pill. Before we get to that, though…
- 1:58Tad Eggleston: 3.
- 1:59Tyler Johnson: Yep. Before we get to that, a little bit of comic news. Chainsaw Man is ending this month.
- 2:08Tyler Johnson: I don't know if you guys heard about…
- 2:10Tyler Johnson: Chainsaw man calling it quits. Well, not calling it quits, he knew he was gonna end it.
- 2:15Tyler Johnson: But let me pull that up. My, my screen…
- 2:20Phil: It's one of those where I haven't… I've obviously know of Chainsaw Man, have not read it myself yet, but that's… that's probably gonna be the next thing I start, you know, just because, alright, you know…
- 2:31Tyler Johnson: It's really good.
- 2:32Phil: Yeah, the end is in sight, yeah.
- 2:33Tyler Johnson: So, okay, so it's written by Tetsuki Fujimoto, and they're gonna end with chapter number 232. I don't know how many volumes that is, though.
- 2:46Phil: It's at least… I mean, I have to imagine at least, like, 20.
- 2:49Phil: Probably. If not… if not way more than that.
- 2:52Tyler Johnson: Probably. So…
- 2:55Tyler Johnson: It's exciting. I mean, if you don't know anything about it, Phil, it's like… it's a dark fantasy set in the 90s, an alternate version of the 90s, and…
- 3:06Tyler Johnson: So he's gotta deal with this demon who can tran- you know, change his body parts into chainsaws?
- 3:13Phil: Yeah.
- 3:14Tyler Johnson: Fantastic.
- 3:15Tyler Johnson: Is one… yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so that's… so that's kind of funny.
- 3:18Tyler Johnson: Alright, moving on. Second piece of news that I found, you guys, is, Avengers Academy wins the GLAA Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book. So, at the 37th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, honoring the year's best LGBTQ representation.
- 3:35Tyler Johnson: Avengers Academy, Marvel Voices, won in the category of Outstanding Comic Book. This is a digital series that ran for 60 chapters from 24 to 25, and I'm trying to look for the creators here real quick. Namely…
- 3:53Tad Eggleston: You did write them down in the notes that are shared.
- 3:55Tyler Johnson: I did, but I did, but now I'm in… now I'm in the article, so…
- 4:00Tyler Johnson: Here, so anyway, his, friend…
- 4:02Tad Eggleston: Annie Oliveira and Carola Borelli.
- 4:06Phil: I'm sure there's more.
- 4:06Tyler Johnson: I was just about to go through them. So, like Tad said, Anthony Oliveira for a writer, guest writers Elsa Sunosen, artist Carola Borelli, Bailey Rosenlund, Pablo Kolar, Charles Stewart, Alti Furman Saya, and Ming Ku Young.
- 4:27Tyler Johnson: But yeah, it's really cool. I'm gonna go pick it up now. I wasn't reading it before, but I will be now.
- 4:34Tyler Johnson: I, I, I have, I have red… It's online.
- 4:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's, it's, it's one of the, the…
- 4:40Tyler Johnson: Now, pick it up. Read it.
- 4:41Tad Eggleston: Digital, yeah.
- 4:42Phil: The vertical scroll.
- 4:44Tyler Johnson: Yep, yep, yep.
- 4:46Tad Eggleston: So… so what kind of… we could spend. There's so much we could… we could talk about here, but I… I… I actually wanna…
- 4:55Tad Eggleston: I wanna… I wanna do a little bit of teaching and pose a question.
- 5:00Tad Eggleston: The teaching side is, like… and this really, really hit my head
- 5:08Tad Eggleston: So, I had a student, not even one of my students, a student in
- 5:14Tad Eggleston: a math class that another one of my students is in, that was… Super frustrated.
- 5:20Tad Eggleston: Because they weren't…
- 5:22Tad Eggleston: getting math, and they didn't feel like they were getting the help that they wanted, etc. So when my student went to try to help this student, I popped in, too. And, like.
- 5:34Tad Eggleston: first thing I noticed was, like, they had ChatGPT up to try to do their math for them, and I'm like.
- 5:40Tad Eggleston: ChatGPT doesn't do math well. It's not what it's designed for, it doesn't do calculations, like, this is the wrong tool.
- 5:48Phil: I actually have the programming explanation as to why, if you'd like that, but yeah.
- 5:53Phil: Yes!
- 5:54Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'll put it in layman's terms in a second, but go ahead and…
- 5:58Phil: So, the big thing… so, a large language model, when you're talking about computers, there's something called data types, which is how the computer can tell the difference between displaying 1 plus 1 and doing the calculation of 1 plus 1. So, all text is the data type of string, that's just how they're referring.
- 6:17Phil: There's a word for it.
- 6:18Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 6:18Phil: Numbers are… there's a few different types, there's integers or decimals, a few different types, one specifically for money. So, the large language model is only dealing with string and with text and with probability of outcomes, so it's not doing what computers were originally built for and designed to do, which is do math.
- 6:38Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 6:39Phil: Computer… compute.
- 6:41Phil: Math. Right.
- 6:42Phil: Right. So yes, they… they invent…
- 6:44Tad Eggleston: Or…
- 6:44Phil: that can't do maths.
- 6:46Tad Eggleston: or as a student who happened to be in the room when I was, like, venting to a couple of teachers,
- 6:54Tad Eggleston: about this incident.
- 6:57Tad Eggleston: said, ChatGPT is just a glorified Text Predictor.
- 7:05Phil: Yeah.
- 7:06Tyler Johnson: It's autocomplete. Yeah, correct.
- 7:07Phil: Autocomplete, off rails.
- 7:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's autocomplete on steroids.
- 7:12Tyler Johnson: There are better ones than ChatGPT for sure, but for math.
- 7:15Tad Eggleston: But they're still… no, no, but all of them are still glorified autocompleters.
- 7:19Phil: Yeah, it's just…
- 7:21Tad Eggleston: at least if they're large language models. Now, now, AI gets used
- 7:27Tad Eggleston: For a lot of different things.
- 7:28Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 7:29Tad Eggleston: So, like, to finish the story, like, I stepped this student through it step by step. They knew how to do it!
- 7:38Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 7:39Tad Eggleston: you know, when I was able to focus them and step them through it, they were… they were able to move forward, and…
- 7:47Tad Eggleston: But then they got a different answer than ChatGPT had.
- 7:51Phil: Oh, boy.
- 7:52Tad Eggleston: And I could not convince them to just open up the answer key and see that they were right, and ChatGPT was wrong.
- 8:01Phil: Oof. That's tough.
- 8:03Phil: That's really tough.
- 8:05Phil: I think that's happening more and more lately.
- 8:09Phil: Where, people are believing ChatGP.
- 8:12Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 8:13Phil: AI or computers.
- 8:14Tad Eggleston: her.
- 8:15Phil: Real life.
- 8:16Tad Eggleston: So, let's take this to… Iran.
- 8:22Tad Eggleston: And, and specifically the, the recent, hubbub
- 8:27Tad Eggleston: Regarding Claude and, and military use.
- 8:34Tad Eggleston: What part of a large language model?
- 8:38Tad Eggleston: It's gonna be effectively used to help you prosecute a war.
- 8:44Phil: Well, so… if I'm gonna be…
- 8:48Phil: honestly, kind of darkly, you know, serious here is that, I mean, Israel supposedly has been using AI for attempting to acquire targets in Palestine for years now.
- 8:59Phil: So, if that's what we're using it for, then it's a false justification to continue bombing things.
- 9:08Tad Eggleston: I mean… Sure.
- 9:12Phil: It's… it's your, you're asking for a list of targets that's never gonna run out.
- 9:16Tad Eggleston: Well, but, but, but, I mean, I'm gonna say that…
- 9:21Tad Eggleston: If we're using it that way, that's, like, the… arguably only… Quote, Big, huge air quotes.
- 9:32Tad Eggleston: Justifiable use for it?
- 9:35Tad Eggleston: Because, you know, it can't…
- 9:36Phil: Well, it's… Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 9:39Tad Eggleston: There is a specific point that I'm going here.
- 9:42Phil: Huh.
- 9:43Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 9:45Tad Eggleston: Phil, big air quotes, you don't have to argue with me about whether or not it's justifiable.
- 9:51Phil: That's fair. That's fair.
- 9:53Phil: That's fair. I did not hear your big air quotes.
- 9:56Tad Eggleston: I said big air quotes. I said the words, big air quotes.
- 10:01Phil: I'm sorry.
- 10:02Tad Eggleston: I didn't actually make them, because I was happy to have my, my, my, my…
- 10:06Tyler Johnson: And, Phil.
- 10:07Tad Eggleston: Listen to the words, Phil!
- 10:09Phil: I'm trying. I'm still drinking coffee, I'm trying.
- 10:16Tad Eggleston: that… I mean, if you understand the software, that's, like, the only possible true… because, like, I…
- 10:28Tad Eggleston: There's no good way to use it for strategy.
- 10:32Tad Eggleston: Even if you really thought it was designed that way, you'd have to be really damn certain that
- 10:42Tad Eggleston: You trained it on the right things.
- 10:46Tad Eggleston: Because if you're training it on the fucking internet, you would have, like, strategy from…
- 10:52Tad Eggleston: Every fanfic war novel ever written,
- 10:59Tad Eggleston: Given equal weight to, like, actual…
- 11:04Tad Eggleston: war game strategies, or real-life strategies that have worked or not worked, etc.
- 11:10Tad Eggleston: But I'm actually going somewhere way more specific and darker.
- 11:18Tad Eggleston: when… I talk about the targets.
- 11:24Tad Eggleston: We dropped not one, but two Tomahawk missiles on a fucking school.
- 11:28Phil: Yeah.
- 11:31Tad Eggleston: A school that used to be part of a military installation, that is still adjacent to a military installation.
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: Which means that if you were using a large language model software, and it was trained on the internet, there is a good… good chance that it would not understand that it wasn't anymore.
- 11:53Tyler Johnson: But it's decommissioned… yeah.
- 11:55Phil: Yeah.
- 11:56Tad Eggleston: Because it would have more old data saying A than new data saying B.
- 12:03Phil: Right. On top of… if it… I don't know how close it is to… a military.
- 12:10Tad Eggleston: It is close, I mean, it…
- 12:12Phil: Well, I'm saying.
- 12:13Tad Eggleston: Because…
- 12:14Phil: It's, it's proximity one.
- 12:15Tad Eggleston: The entire… yeah, the entire base wasn't decommissioned.
- 12:19Phil: Yeah.
- 12:21Tad Eggleston: So, like, they're playing this as…
- 12:28Tad Eggleston: Like, the people who are playing this most honestly…
- 12:34Tad Eggleston: Are playing this as we used old information.
- 12:38Phil: Oof.
- 12:39Tad Eggleston: and even they are acknowledging that, like, it could have been checked. You know, there are a lot of people talking about the office in the Pentagon that was specifically designed to try to avoid this sort of thing was one of the things that exists
- 12:55Tad Eggleston: shot down.
- 12:56Tad Eggleston: got rid of, that sort of thing.
- 13:03Tad Eggleston: But…
- 13:09Tad Eggleston: I think that there's reason to wonder if it's deeper than that.
- 13:15Tad Eggleston: If we had a computer spit out a target based on faulty information.
- 13:20Tad Eggleston: And because we both fed it bad information.
- 13:27Tad Eggleston: Because we've just given it all of the information.
- 13:33Tad Eggleston: I mean, this is… this is the kind of mistake
- 13:39Tad Eggleston: that we should expect from AI.
- 13:41Phil: Yeah.
- 13:44Tad Eggleston: I think, yeah.
- 13:45Tad Eggleston: big, huge air quotes around AI.
- 13:50Phil: And…
- 13:50Tad Eggleston: like, when I talk… when I hear… when I hear, like, the amount of money that the military is putting into large language models to put to use, and I'm sitting there going.
- 14:03Tad Eggleston: What's the added value?
- 14:07Tad Eggleston: We've been doing wargames and good ones for a long time.
- 14:10Tad Eggleston: We… we have massive cyber…
- 14:13Tad Eggleston: defense and cyber offense programs. You think that if there were computer programs that could be written to help us execute a war
- 14:23Tad Eggleston: better, they wouldn't have been written by the U.S. military and intelligence apparatus.
- 14:29Tad Eggleston: Already? You think we have to go to fucking Elon Musk?
- 14:35Phil: Yeah, I mean, that's… that's… that's actually… speaking of Elon Musk, I think he's… Probably one of the… well…
- 14:44Phil: So what I'm thinking of this in terms of is that, to me, this is… this is now Silicon Valley slash, you know, tech companies
- 14:52Phil: taking a step towards merging with the military-industrial complex. They're…
- 14:57Tad Eggleston: Not a step!
- 14:59Phil: A dive, a deep dive into the deep end of it, but it's… it's…
- 15:04Tad Eggleston: Also, not a… like, the deep dive?
- 15:06Phil: Yeah.
- 15:07Tad Eggleston: Already happened.
- 15:08Phil: Okay.
- 15:10Phil: So, what, how would you.
- 15:11Tad Eggleston: This is the…
- 15:12Phil: I guess.
- 15:12Tad Eggleston: I would phrase it as, there is no difference.
- 15:18Tad Eggleston: Between Silicon Valley.
- 15:20Tad Eggleston: the military-industrial complex.
- 15:23Tad Eggleston: They have become a part of it. That's what they bought when they bought their president.
- 15:29Phil: Gotcha, yeah.
- 15:30Phil: Yeah, I could see that. Ed, but it's… and it's… Yeah, it's terrifying, honestly.
- 15:36Tad Eggleston: And… and, like… Right now… The results are… 175 schoolchildren.
- 15:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 15:48Tad Eggleston: Though, I feel like we've had more friendly fire accidents than I'm used to, too.
- 15:53Tyler Johnson: No kidding.
- 15:57Phil: Yeah, I think it's…
- 15:58Tad Eggleston: We've had American-made missile defense systems shoot down American planes.
- 16:04Phil: It's beyond fucked up.
- 16:11Tad Eggleston: You know, it's been the, the…
- 16:14Tad Eggleston: you know, go back and read… Spencer Ackerman's been on top of this forever.
- 16:19Tad Eggleston: He didn't specifically write about what I just brought up, you know, this is purely my speculation.
- 16:26Tad Eggleston: But, like… the amount of AI investment… in… Palestinian genocide is ridiculous.
- 16:39Phil: Yeah.
- 16:40Tad Eggleston: You know, that's their proving ground.
- 16:43Tad Eggleston: Proving, again, with a big… Huge air quotes around it, because, like…
- 16:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, they've probably knocked out the Hamas infrastructure, but, like…
- 17:00Tad Eggleston: Only because, there's almost nothing still standing.
- 17:04Phil: Yeah.
- 17:05Tad Eggleston: in Gaza.
- 17:07Tyler Johnson: Right?
- 17:09Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 17:10Tad Eggleston: So, like… Rather than having these, these, like, stories about…
- 17:19Tad Eggleston: oh, this AI company took a stand, or that one didn't blah blah blah, like…
- 17:25Phil: Hmm.
- 17:26Tad Eggleston: Can we really talk about what AI is?
- 17:30Tad Eggleston: Whether or not it's currently appropriate for military use.
- 17:36Tad Eggleston: And most importantly, does the military Know how to use it.
- 17:45Phil: I mean, I think it's clear that.
- 17:48Tad Eggleston: Because I certainly don't trust that Pete Hegseth would.
- 17:50Phil: No, I mean, I would… I would leap straight to the argument that I don't think there is a good way to use it, and…
- 17:58Tad Eggleston: But, I mean…
- 17:59Phil: And because of that, because of that…
- 18:00Tad Eggleston: But, but, but…
- 18:01Phil: I don't know how to use it.
- 18:03Tad Eggleston: But yeah, I mean, this is where… this is where I gotta say, like, take off your Pollyanna glasses.
- 18:09Tad Eggleston: Pollyanna?
- 18:10Tad Eggleston: You can't…
- 18:15Tad Eggleston: The only way you win the…
- 18:19Tad Eggleston: There isn't a good way to use it.
- 18:22Tad Eggleston: Is if you get them engaged in the argument, and they show you that there's not a good way to use it.
- 18:30Phil: Okay.
- 18:30Tad Eggleston: Until then, you're just being the… the, oh, you just…
- 18:35Tyler Johnson: It's a stick in the mud, yeah.
- 18:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, you're the wuss that doesn't have the guts to do what needs to be done, blah blah blah. No.
- 18:45Tyler Johnson: They blow up a school with a hundred and so many…
- 18:49Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 18:49Phil: is that I think that people who would be of that mindset already, I don't know if they can be convinced.
- 18:55Tyler Johnson: No, they can't.
- 18:56Tad Eggleston: I understand, which is why they need to be in front of Congress, they need to be in front of everybody.
- 19:03Tad Eggleston: Explaining what they think they're accomplishing.
- 19:09Tad Eggleston: Because that's the only way they can be held accountable.
- 19:15Phil: Well, and that's… that's, quite frankly, another thing I worry, is the ability to… to bring accountability to these people.
- 19:22Tad Eggleston: oh, that's a huge issue, but that's why it needs to be the focus. Just saying…
- 19:29Tad Eggleston: I mean, like, again, Anybody who understands AI at all.
- 19:36Tad Eggleston: Or, again, what we currently call AI, which is so far away from true artificial intelligence that it's not even funny.
- 19:46Phil: Sure. Yeah.
- 19:48Tyler Johnson: We're in the baby stages right now.
- 19:51Tad Eggleston: I mean, we were in the baby stages in the 50s.
- 19:53Phil: Yeah.
- 19:55Tyler Johnson: Alright, guys, let's get… let's move on to comic books. I… I, have to get going in about an hour, so we should get rolling.
- 20:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 20:04Tyler Johnson: Alright, well…
- 20:06Tad Eggleston: Some new-to-order books.
- 20:08Tyler Johnson: Straight up new to order. Listen, this first one is near and dear to my heart. My son…
- 20:13Tyler Johnson: Loved this show, when it was on Comedy, Network, or Cartoon Network, excuse me. This is Ben 10.
- 20:22Tyler Johnson: From Joe Casey and Robert Carey. A fresh take on a 21st century classic, fan favorite Ben 10 returns in an all-new series that will appeal to longtime fans and new readers alike.
- 20:36Tyler Johnson: When a mysterious meteor crashes to Earth, 10-year-old Ben Tennyson discovers the Omnitrix.
- 20:42Tyler Johnson: High-tech alien gauntlet of incredible power and potential.
- 20:46Tyler Johnson: With this device on his wrist, Ben has the power to transform into incredible alien forms, but can he control the power? This looks like it's gonna be a final order cutoff of April 13th, and will be in shops on May 6th.
- 21:03Tyler Johnson: From… who is it? Who put this out? I…
- 21:06Tad Eggleston: Dynamite.
- 21:07Tyler Johnson: Dynamite.
- 21:09Tyler Johnson: Cool.
- 21:12Phil: Next up, we've got… that was… that was me, sorry.
- 21:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I expected it to be Tyler.
- 21:18Phil: Concrete stars over sand, number one, from Paul Chadwick and Dark Horse. The Isa Harvey and Rubin Award-winning Concrete is back with a five-part story of amnesia, wilderness, and suspense. Concrete has entered the desert and not come back. Larry and Maureen are frantic. Reports come that he is wandering the nearby arid mountains, covered with blood, attacking people.
- 21:41Phil: Concrete, lightning struck, confused. Rome's a frightening world he can't understand. Roars tear across the sky. A strange globe rises. His body is sheathed in stone. He thinks he is being hunted. People are a threat.
- 21:54Phil: His journey back to life and his friend's dire search against a looming deadline is as strange and tense as any concrete story ever told.
- 22:02Phil: First new one in 20 years. This is coming back again from writer-artist Paul Chadwick and Dark Horse. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of May 11th in stores June 17th.
- 22:18Tyler Johnson: Awesome. I'm very excited for that.
- 22:22Tyler Johnson: Oh, Hank Howard? Who's got that one? Hank?
- 22:25Tad Eggleston: Howard?
- 22:26Tad Eggleston: Pizza Detective.
- 22:27Tad Eggleston: A Slice of Life from Robert Venditti and David Lapham.
- 22:34Tad Eggleston: Striking new vision.
- 22:36Tad Eggleston: In the fight against crime, Hank Howard is back in the one place he thought he'd finally left behind, his hometown of Tampa. But unfortunately for Hank, pizza crime doesn't take a vacation.
- 22:48Tad Eggleston: Before he knows it, he's knee-deep in his first homicide case, facing down lawyers, locking lips with a long-lost flame, punching pirates, and dodging bullets as he races against time to solve his first-ever homicide case.
- 23:01Tad Eggleston: Final letter cutoff is April 6th in stores on May 6th from… Bad idea.
- 23:09Tyler Johnson: Hey, can I ask a question about Pizza Detective? Has this been a long-going series? Because I just picked up a recent new run of it. Is that the beginning of it, or… because I just started reading it.
- 23:23Tad Eggleston: So…
- 23:26Tyler Johnson: What's the, like, what's the history behind Pizza Detective?
- 23:30Tad Eggleston: There's wolf.
- 23:31Phil: view… before.
- 23:33Tad Eggleston: there were… well, I think there's only been one two-issue series that came Out on its own.
- 23:41Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 23:42Tad Eggleston: to stores. But, it had been… Backup stories in…

- 24:12Tyler Johnson: Okay, okay.
- 24:12Tad Eggleston: covers and stuff.
- 24:14Tyler Johnson: Because I really enjoyed the two issues that I've gotten so far.

- 44:23Tad Eggleston: easier only by the fact that I didn't actually manage to read half of the ones that I was
- 44:29Tad Eggleston: worried about being in the top spot. I'm not certain that I read any of the ones that were… were among my… my three that I hoped would be spectacular.
- 44:41Tad Eggleston: just because of the way… way time worked out this week. So… so I have… I have 3 more books that I'm looking forward to reading today.
- 44:49Tad Eggleston: Nice. That's always a good point.
- 44:51Tad Eggleston: But the winners, and I completely neglected to put down, you know.
- 44:57Phil: grade 15.
- 44:58Tad Eggleston: creative teams, The winners were Godzilla vs. America Portland, Caitlin Yersky was involved in that,
- 45:07Tad Eggleston: Colleen Coover was involved in that, a few other people. This one goes right up there with Chicago and LA for my favorite. Though Boston was also good, you can never, never turn away one that's got Jesse Longergan.
- 45:24Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 45:24Tad Eggleston: This is no offense to Kansas City, Kansas City was a solid outing, but, like.
- 45:29Phil: Which one had Carolyn Cash do a story?
- 45:31Tad Eggleston: That was Chicago.
- 45:32Phil: Okay, okay.
- 45:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Chicago had Carolyn Cash and Ezra Clayton Daniel, and LA had Dave Baker, and Boston had…
- 45:43Tad Eggleston: Jesse Lonergan, like.
- 45:45Phil: Wow. Yeah.
- 45:47Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, Kansas City's extremely solid, really good effort, just…
- 45:54Phil: I mean, I couldn't… I mean…
- 45:56Tad Eggleston: Oh, it was something.
- 45:57Phil: Fantastic.
- 45:57Tad Eggleston: They are all fantastic, but essentially, like, the only knock on Kansas City is that it's a really amazing Godzilla comic book, rather than, like, having any part of it that, like.
- 46:13Tad Eggleston: Breaks the bounds of what people normally think.
- 46:17Tad Eggleston: About what they think comics.
- 46:20Phil: a great Godzilla story.
- 46:21Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 46:26Tad Eggleston: Exorcism at Buckingham Palace is the new Hannah Rose May, and let me look up the artist really quick, because the art was fantastic.
- 46:38Phil: Hmm.
- 46:39Phil: That sounds really fascinating, just from a.
- 46:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's… it's…
- 46:43Tad Eggleston: I mean, I can't say for certain that it's a sequel sequel to Her Exorcism at 1600 Penn.
- 46:50Phil: This is also…
- 46:51Tad Eggleston: Really good.
- 46:52Tyler Johnson: It is not… it is not a sequel, but, I mean, it's in that same vein that…
- 46:56Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:57Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:58Tad Eggleston: But Exorcism of 1600 pen was also… fantastic. Extracenticism at Buckingham Palace… Hannah Rosemay, and…
- 47:26Tad Eggleston: Of course, we're, we're…
- 47:28Phil: Ew.
- 47:30Tad Eggleston: When are you gonna tell us about the damn artist? It does look. Oh, there we go.
- 47:34Phil: Like, solid art, that's for sure. It's… it's from IDW, so if we're… Me too.
- 47:39Tad Eggleston: Ramsey… what's the first name?
- 47:45Tad Eggleston: Because we just… Let me just… I've seen care.
- 47:49Phil: Enter names before this, but…
- 47:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah, but I just… I just saw the last name re… referred to, like, like, the full… Kelsey Ramsey.
- 48:00Phil: Okay.
- 48:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah, damn.
- 48:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, it was, it was, it was, like, everything you want, in a first issue, as was Tigers Island number one from Patrick Kindlin and EPHK from Image.
- 48:16Tyler Johnson: I have that in… I have that in my pile. The cover with the… with those blank faces looks really interesting.
- 48:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 48:24Tyler Johnson: It's, it's okay.
- 48:25Tyler Johnson: How do you read it.
- 48:26Phil: That one looks pretty good to me, too. I actually just checked it out on Hoopla, so, yeah, I'm gonna give that one a read.
- 48:31Tad Eggleston: It's good stuff.
- 48:32Phil: Nice.
- 48:33Tad Eggleston: So… Phil, take a walk.
- 48:35Phil: Oh yeah, I, I did get to Die Loaded No. 5 on release day, and it was a really great issue. So much tension.
- 48:46Phil: With the… the story of this one. An absolutely incredible
- 48:52Phil: layouts from Stephanie Hans that was supposedly unasked for, she just went for it, which makes it even cooler, in my opinion. Yeah, I am gonna be… I am gonna… I am definitely chomping at the bit a little bit for the conclusion of this arc, and figuring out who the rest of the party is at this point. Or the last member, I guess, because we… yeah, there's just one more… one more to go.
- 49:16Phil: And, yeah, it's absolutely thrilling. I read a lot of Blue Period this week, which both has me thinking about art and, like.
- 49:25Phil: wanting to think and talk about art more than anything else going on at, you know, in the world, or at my job, or anything like that. And it just, it feels really good to be, like.
- 49:39Phil: plugged in and, really flying through a series. Like, I mean, I… I read… this is… this is a similar pace that I read From Hell at, you know, of… of just, here's a big book, and I'm reading it
- 49:52Phil: continuously, pretty much all at once. I've been, yeah, it's been a while since I've had, like, a long comic series that is completely new to me, to just…
- 50:01Phil: just dive into, and it's been… it's been wonderful. Yeah. Just de-screening a little bit, yeah, you know.
- 50:08Phil: All those sorts of things. And with that, Ted, did you… did… you're still… you're still,
- 50:14Tad Eggleston: It'll be calms.
- 50:15Phil: It's… it's… is…
- 50:16Tad Eggleston: Sadly still be called.
- 50:18Phil: At the risk of… is there… is there a certain naval blockage that is contributing?
- 50:24Tad Eggleston: No… no idea, but…
- 50:25Phil: Yep.
- 50:26Tad Eggleston: But there is spring break coming up, so hopefully I'll manage to do some then.
- 50:32Phil: Yeah, so I, I jumped from having read, like, two and a half chapters of Blue Period to 26 chapters, which, yeah, well, when there's only four, that's, that's through, I started Volume 7 last night, so…
- 50:45Phil: jumped from cracking into Volume 1 to read 6 whole volumes, this past week. And I think, yeah, I'm pushing towards… I don't know if I'll hit 17 by next week or the week after, but, yeah, that's, thanks to my local library.
- 51:00Phil: It's the physical reading that gets me to go faster.
- 51:04Tad Eggleston: All right, some great responsibility. We've been… we've been talking about this series, Behind the series, for a long time. I was lucky enough to get to… to meet Michael Feefe at,
- 51:18Tad Eggleston: CXC last year, and…
- 51:20Tad Eggleston: now I'll have an excuse to get off my ass and… and… and drag him on the show. Let's talk some… some…
- 51:29Tad Eggleston: Copra. Round 1.
- 51:33Phil: Well, I guess the first big question is, is it pronounced Copra or copra?
- 51:38Tyler Johnson: I thought it was COPRA, but I was gonna ask you guys.
- 51:43Tyler Johnson: Cause I'm like, I don't know, but… Yeah, it's cool.
- 51:46Tad Eggleston: I think I said the word Copra to Mikel, and it didn't get corrected.
- 51:52Phil: Mmm, okay, that, that, that's a… certainly a Sunday official.
- 51:58Tad Eggleston: But I didn't manage to make it to his talk, so I don't know, like, how he voluntarily pronounced it, so yeah, how about that?
- 52:07Phil: So, yeah.
- 52:09Tyler Johnson: Well, before we dive into Suicide Squad, I mean Cobra.
- 52:15Tad Eggleston: It does, it does have, it does have Suicide Squad elements.
- 52:19Phil: It does.
- 52:20Tad Eggleston: And I don't think that was an accident.
- 52:22Phil: No, and that jumped out at me on the first read. This time, it definitely feels like Suicide Squad meets Doom Patrol, you know?
- 52:30Tyler Johnson: Yes, with…
- 52:32Phil: Other references built in, too.
- 52:34Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 52:35Tad Eggleston: I mean, I feel like it winds up getting deeper than any of those. Oh, yeah, correct.
- 52:43Tyler Johnson: It does, yep.
- 52:45Tad Eggleston: But my biggest thing, and one of the things that I want to talk more with Mikel about, is, like.
- 52:52Tad Eggleston: I forget if it's in the introduction to Book 1, or if I read it somewhere else, that he talked about,
- 53:00Tad Eggleston: what if I were to try to do a book like Kirby?
- 53:03Tad Eggleston: and not like Kirby as in, like, Kirby style or whatnot, but like Kirby as in Kirby speed.
- 53:12Phil: Breaking the Kirby.
- 53:14Tad Eggleston: I just… I just did whatever… whatever I had to do to do it at… and probably not even Kirby Speed, because Kirby Speed was, like, 6 pages a day, and…
- 53:23Phil: Yeah, it was…
- 53:24Tad Eggleston: I was shooting for, like, three, you know? Yeah. But he was also, I think, doing all of the color and inking as well.
- 53:34Phil: Which, that is definitely, like, the artistic vibrancy just jumps off the page of this book, because I remember the first time I read it, and even reading it this time on my phone, this is a book that makes me want to learn how to draw. Like, that's how much fun it looks like he's having on the page, and like…
- 53:53Tyler Johnson: Yes, it's very… it's loose. And the other thing is, too, the art style is so, interesting, because much of it is done with colored pencil. Yeah.
- 54:05Tad Eggleston: N?
- 54:06Tyler Johnson: when you look at it, you're like, oh, this feels like a middle school kid's notebook, right? And you're like…
- 54:13Phil: coolest fucking middle school kid you've ever… because seriously, it's like, it has that, that sort of, like, notebook, DIY aesthetic, but… but…
- 54:20Tad Eggleston: And I have a facsimile of Jeff Smith's, you know, elementary school version of Bone, and, like, it can be done.
- 54:31Phil: Yeah.
- 54:31Tad Eggleston: His middle school version of Bone, too.
- 54:34Tad Eggleston: Characters are already pretty much fully formed.
- 54:38Phil: Yeah.
- 54:39Tad Eggleston: By the time he was 8.
- 54:43Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 54:43Phil: I didn't know that about, about Bone.
- 54:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 54:46Tyler Johnson: That's cool. I mean, that is Jeff still doing it, right? And… Yeah. But, no, the artwork in this, is… the figures… the figures are kind of clunky, right? And that's probably on purpose. They just look like lumbering, big characters, and,
- 55:06Tyler Johnson: I like it. You know, again, like I said, it gives off a young vibe of a young artist.
- 55:13Tyler Johnson: But… but that's… but that's definitely on purpose, you know what I mean? That's the style.
- 55:17Tad Eggleston: But I'm gonna… I'm gonna take it a slightly different way. What this does…
- 55:23Tad Eggleston: From an art… from a comic art standpoint.
- 55:27Tad Eggleston: is… emphasize…
- 55:34Tad Eggleston: how much of the story can be told? I mean, remember, in Understanding Comics, Scott McCloud has, like, his abstract scale of art, you know, from very representational to very realistic.
- 55:50Tad Eggleston: And, like, what this does is show you how much Great storytelling can be done.
- 55:59Tad Eggleston: With really representational artwork.
- 56:02Phil: Yeah, is the amount of, like.
- 56:05Phil: Open… the way he uses open space, like.
- 56:09Phil: Parts of the page that are untouched.
- 56:11Phil: is incredible to me. Whereas now, like, if you look at anything from Marvel and DC, it's like.
- 56:17Phil: fully painted, top to bottom. So the amount of, like.
- 56:20Phil: bare page open space that he uses is… is…
- 56:24Tad Eggleston: And it's still an action superhero comic.
- 56:26Phil: Exactly, yeah, it's like he's… he's blending together, abstraction and minimalism and, I'll show you guys this…
- 56:37Tyler Johnson: This page here, where we've got a whole bunch of frames that are kind of thrown together like postcards on a table.
- 56:43Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 56:44Tyler Johnson: And then the background is just a solid white. And yeah, it feels…
- 56:53Tyler Johnson: It's… it gives it a certain feeling, for sure.
- 56:56Phil: We're busy.
- 56:56Tyler Johnson: aren't standard panels. I mean, sure, on a couple pages, standard panels, but not…
- 57:01Phil: But when X.
- 57:02Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 57:02Phil: When he uses… even…
- 57:04Phil: the layouts, the… the combination of, like, non-traditional shaped layouts, and, like, those action ones where the panels are all sloppy together, and then just having, like, 3 tiers of, like, progressive images, it's… it's also great. It's… it's…
- 57:19Tad Eggleston: Well, and like… every line Is dedicated to storytelling.
- 57:26Phil: Yes, 100%.
- 57:28Tad Eggleston: I mean, what makes this comic really special and makes it become even more special the deeper you go is every line
- 57:38Tad Eggleston: Is dedicated to storytelling.
- 57:42Phil: Both.
- 57:42Tad Eggleston: Texting.
- 57:43Phil: And… and art.
- 57:45Tad Eggleston: Right, it's… it's, in some ways, like, the most minimalist action comic you could possibly make.
- 57:53Phil: Pretty much, yeah, yeah, it's hard for me to think of…
- 57:56Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 57:57Tyler Johnson: That's a good way to put it.
- 57:58Tad Eggleston: And, and, like… Because of that, it…
- 58:05Tad Eggleston: It both distinguishes comics as a storytelling medium.
- 58:09Tad Eggleston: More than an art medium or a writing medium.
- 58:15Phil: Yeah.
- 58:15Tad Eggleston: And it… it… Makes a statement about…
- 58:24Tad Eggleston: What the real, essential parts of that storytelling are.
- 58:31Phil: Yeah.
- 58:32Phil: Yeah, that… that makes a lot of sense, because it's… it is focused…
- 58:36Tad Eggleston: Because the acting is there.
- 58:38Phil: Yeah.
- 58:39Tad Eggleston: I mean, is… is it… is perf… I mean, and… and, like.
- 58:44Tad Eggleston: even as I was about to say it, I went, oh, here's another person that's often understated in their acting, just in different ways. I was about to say, is it as profound as Elsa Chardier? Maybe not, but then I went, you know, Elsie Chardier also tends to be kind of minimalist. How often do we talk about profound acting with really detailed, realistic art?
- 59:07Phil: Yeah, it can get harder because, you know, sometimes the more detail you put into it, like, the less.
- 59:16Tad Eggleston: The more ambiguity there is.
- 59:17Phil: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:18Tad Eggleston: Human faces are hard to read.
- 59:20Phil: Exactly, yeah, whereas when you have that, the cartooning that's just, like.
- 59:24Tad Eggleston: I mean, I am both autistic and work in autism education. We use a lot of comics and or emoji-type things to help
- 59:33Tad Eggleston: kids… Understand and pick up on emotions.
- 59:37Phil: Absolutely, yeah.
- 59:39Tad Eggleston: You know? Yeah.
- 59:40Phil: I think the acting, I mean, one of the big things for me, I mean, again, his… between his use of layouts and his, like, panel progression of… of seeing, like.
- 59:51Phil: What is a chaotic, like, the first issue where, you know, the bad guys
- 59:58Phil: jump the van, and it's just complete chaos, but it is so cool-looking, and so fun, and you know what's happening the whole time. That's another thing that's great, is that the storytelling comes through, and it's clearly conveyed, and you're not guessing.
- 1:00:12Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, this is… this is where I… I go, like…
- 1:00:17Tad Eggleston: I know Tyler and I have talked about this once or twice, like,
- 1:00:22Tad Eggleston: Lone Wolf and Cub is one of my favorite comics ever.
- 1:00:27Tad Eggleston: And… and… certainly one of the most beautiful comics ever, ever drawn. But…
- 1:00:40Tad Eggleston: In terms of fight scenes, I like Usagi Yojimbo more, because I always know which character is which.
- 1:00:46Phil: Okay. Yeah, I can see that. I can understand that.
- 1:00:50Tad Eggleston: In kinetic fight scenes in Lone Wolf and Cub, I sometimes have to look really carefully to figure out which one is our ronin, and which one is the one that he's fighting against. That's not a problem when it's a rabbit and a fox.
- 1:01:03Phil: I think, I mean, yeah, when it's… when it's a detailed style, and it's in black…
- 1:01:08Tad Eggleston: You know what I mean?
- 1:01:09Phil: Yeah, no, I do. Well, and same with this, where when all of the character designs are totally different, you know, and unique, and I love…
- 1:01:17Tad Eggleston: Characters were clearly designed to never…
- 1:01:21Tad Eggleston: Have a problem knowing who was who.
- 1:01:24Phil: Yeah, and I also love how some of the more, like, generic-looking designs were the people who got killed instantly.
- 1:01:30Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:01:31Phil: Like.
- 1:01:31Tyler Johnson: I mean… The red, the red, the red shirt.
- 1:01:33Phil: Yeah, the obvious after light knockoff.
- 1:01:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, definitely one of the things that… that I would, I would talk to Mikel about, is, is…
- 1:01:44Tad Eggleston: like…
- 1:01:46Tad Eggleston: How much time did you spend putting together your characters initially to make them so that… like, talk about… talk about the pre-series prep.
- 1:01:56Phil: Yo.
- 1:01:57Tad Eggleston: You know, because part of this is that, you know, essentially, you know, to use a Matt Madden term, the constraint you put on yourself was you wanted to work at a really high speed. Yeah. But…
- 1:02:09Tad Eggleston: But even when working in constraints, you then have to put together the right toolbox, and in this case, a lot of that toolbox is… is character and world design that
- 1:02:21Tad Eggleston: That you know that you can…
- 1:02:25Tad Eggleston: use quickly. So talk to me about how you thought about Your… your character designs.
- 1:02:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah. So, Mikel, if you're listening, that's, that's like…
- 1:02:37Tad Eggleston: Maybe not question one, but an early question.
- 1:02:39Tyler Johnson: Tell us about…
- 1:02:40Tad Eggleston: An early question, should you ever.
- 1:02:42Phil: Question zero.
- 1:02:43Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:44Tyler Johnson: Yeah. I mean, I… Well, he…
- 1:02:46Tyler Johnson: I was gonna say, guys, I have to go at 9. I have to jump off.
- 1:02:50Tad Eggleston: Well, then we… that… that becomes a… a… I mean, particularly because we're planning on going through all of Copra. Okay, good.
- 1:02:58Phil: I was just about to ask, are we doing Volume 2 next week?
- 1:03:01Tyler Johnson: I hope so, I hope so.
- 1:03:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, no.
- 1:03:03Phil: I'm on board.
- 1:03:03Tad Eggleston: We'll do it all, it's done. There's no reason not to just go around a week.
- 1:03:09Tyler Johnson: young.
- 1:03:09Tad Eggleston: Remember, round.
- 1:03:10Phil: I love that.
- 1:03:11Tad Eggleston: Around two, man.
- 1:03:12Tyler Johnson: Cool.
- 1:03:13Phil: Because it's like a fight.
- 1:03:14Tyler Johnson: Right.
- 1:03:15Phil: in a fight. It's a… it's.
- 1:03:16Tyler Johnson: You know, as far as, like, like I said, I made the joke that it's Suicide Squad, but it's not. It's better.
- 1:03:22Phil: more.
- 1:03:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:03:23Tyler Johnson: It's better. Yeah.
- 1:03:24Phil: Honestly?
- 1:03:25Tad Eggleston: It works from a little bit of that premise.
- 1:03:28Tad Eggleston: But the characters are deeper.
- 1:03:32Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah. The… the… the… there's more ambiguity about what they're being asked to do.
- 1:03:39Tad Eggleston: And whatnot, like… And I thought it was a great decision that,
- 1:03:49Tad Eggleston: They didn't open with, oh, we're putting this team together.
- 1:03:53Phil: Team's already there.
- 1:03:55Tad Eggleston: The team's already there.
- 1:03:56Phil: They opened with taking the team apart.
- 1:03:58Tyler Johnson: Yeah, they explained, they explained, and then they went back, right? Honestly… Right.
- 1:04:03Phil: having read this, it kind of ruins Suicide Squad for me. Like, I look at Suicide Squad, and I'm like, I don't really get it. And I know that there's supposed to be a huge, great Ostrander run in, the 80s and stuff, but I'm like, every Suicide Squad I look at, and I'm like, this is just shitty Copra, you know?
- 1:04:20Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:04:20Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:04:21Tyler Johnson: And, you know, I… I know we're… this is kind of silly, but I'm just going to point out my favorite frame, because we were talking about frames, and artwork, where, you know, I'm new to… I'm new to Copra, so I don't know character names yet, but…
- 1:04:33Tad Eggleston: I'm not new to COPRA, and I don't manage to…
- 1:04:38Tyler Johnson: Where she was the tank. The tank man, right?
- 1:04:42Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:43Tyler Johnson: Rips him off.
- 1:04:44Tyler Johnson: tank. That was half tank. Half tank, half man. And did you notice where the gun is on the tank when he's shooting?
- 1:04:53Phil: It's been coming.
- 1:04:54Tyler Johnson: Right out of his crotch area.
- 1:04:56Phil: A bit more later.
- 1:04:56Tyler Johnson: serious.
- 1:04:57Tyler Johnson: It looks hilarious.
- 1:04:59Phil: Oh yeah, no, my favorite page was probably when the count guy was mind-warping the big bad guy, and he was, like, turning into a circle of himself. That scene was awesome.
- 1:05:10Tyler Johnson: This is kind of, just nitpicky, but I don't enjoy the, kind of,
- 1:05:18Tyler Johnson: Taupe-ish background throughout this.
- 1:05:22Phil: Hmm.
- 1:05:23Tyler Johnson: I… I… I'm just a little bored.
- 1:05:25Phil: I like it. It's interesting, it's… yeah, I mean, it's… it's unique. It's… it's a… it's a…
- 1:05:32Phil: you know, it's a background color that I don't see very often, so then it.
- 1:05:36Tad Eggleston: I kind of don't even notice half the time.
- 1:05:39Tad Eggleston: Okay. And I think that's part of the point.
- 1:05:44Phil: Yeah, I mean, it just.
- 1:05:45Tyler Johnson: Let's, yeah.
- 1:05:46Phil: the color of the page to me at that point, you know?
- 1:05:48Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:05:49Phil: That's what he's drawing on. But yeah.
- 1:05:54Tyler Johnson: I mean, it's not throughout the whole thing, so I shouldn't say that, but it…
- 1:05:57Tad Eggleston: Well, but, but I, I mean.
- 1:05:58Phil: Good enough.
- 1:05:59Tad Eggleston: That goes back to what I was saying before, like, every line has a purpose.
- 1:06:05Tyler Johnson: Yep, yep.
- 1:06:06Tad Eggleston: So, like…
- 1:06:09Tad Eggleston: What color do they tell you to make your walls when you're getting your house ready to sell?
- 1:06:15Phil: Yeah.
- 1:06:16Tad Eggleston: That's the background, unless there's a reason for it not to.
- 1:06:23Tad Eggleston: And then he'll put something else there.
- 1:06:26Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 1:06:28Tad Eggleston: At least that's kind of my take, and I didn't… I didn't manage to do as deep of a dive this week, so, like, these are all thoughts that I've had for…
- 1:06:37Tad Eggleston: ages, not, like, finely honed ones, but that's kind of…
- 1:06:41Tyler Johnson: 19.
- 1:06:42Tad Eggleston: is that? I… yeah.
- 1:06:43Tyler Johnson: I'm excited for Round 2, for sure. Heck yeah.
- 1:06:48Tyler Johnson: I do like it that they call them rounds, that's really cool. I was… I had to make sure I was reading the right thing, because I went back… because there's a number of Copra, stuff in, Global Comics where I'm.
- 1:07:00Tad Eggleston: There is.
- 1:07:01Tyler Johnson: I'm like, there's the Master Collection, Death of Copa.
- 1:07:05Tad Eggleston: I think the Master Collection has the original 3 rounds, because it didn't start at Image.
- 1:07:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Started independent, independent?
- 1:07:14Phil: Yeah, self-published, pretty sure. Ruse made an amount to put.
- 1:07:17Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:07:18Phil: Yeah.
- 1:07:19Tyler Johnson: Yep, and then.
- 1:07:20Tad Eggleston: Sync?
- 1:07:20Phil: I think it was… yeah, sorry, we should probably just wrap up.
- 1:07:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:07:25Tad Eggleston: We've got lots of time to talk, Copra. So let's get into the three books we hope will be spectacular.
- 1:07:32Tad Eggleston: Dead Teenagers number one, from Jude Ellison S. Doyle and Caitlin Yarsky, friend of the podcast, from Oni Press, just looks awesome.
- 1:07:42Tad Eggleston: End of life number 2, end of life number one was awesome.
- 1:07:45Tyler Johnson: That was… that was so good. I loved it, you know? And it's weird reading Kyle Starks.
- 1:07:51Tad Eggleston: I love cows.
- 1:07:52Tyler Johnson: that format, you know, in that style, in that… I don't know, but it's great.
- 1:07:56Tad Eggleston: Al Starks and Tim Pugh, and
- 1:07:59Tad Eggleston: And, and, and, for Phil and myself, Batwoman No. 1 from Greg Bracca and Danny at DC.
- 1:08:08Tyler Johnson: There's a…
- 1:08:08Tad Eggleston: There's a crap.
- 1:08:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah, there's a crap ton of other really great comics coming out this week. Crazy For You, from Paul Thoreaux and Steve Laffert, Fanographics, If You're Behind, Death to Pachuco, and Trinity Daughter of Wonder Woman.
- 1:08:26Tad Eggleston: Animan beat everyone up, and hot or not among the graphic novels. American Caper is rolling on, as our barbarian behind bars, Devil on My Shoulder, The Future Is, Kill All Immortals, Night City.
- 1:08:41Tad Eggleston: a book from Matt Kint and David Lapham.
- 1:08:46Tad Eggleston: Didn't make my top 3 this week.
- 1:08:49Phil: That's tough.
- 1:08:51Tyler Johnson: Funny.
- 1:08:52Phil: Yeah, I'll also…
- 1:08:53Tad Eggleston: The Scotty Young, Jorge Corona… or Lobos starts up, Lucky Devils continues, Mary Sue wraps up, Powers 25, number 7, Roots of Madness, number 5, Ultimate Wolverine.
- 1:09:10Tad Eggleston: Number 15, Tom King returning with, number 31 of Wonder Woman. I probably should have, like, put WrestleHeist up with the…
- 1:09:19Tad Eggleston: the End of Life number 2, because it's Kyle Starks.
- 1:09:24Tad Eggleston: That could have even maybe moved End of Life up above Dead Teenagers, but I'm really looking forward to Dead Teenagers, so I'm not certain. So yeah, really, really good book, Week Comics. Phil, what is your giant-sized trade waiter pick?
- 1:09:39Phil: That's gonna be Don't Forget Your Briefcase by Elliot.
- 1:09:42Tyler Johnson: No, I'm doing it.
- 1:09:43Phil: Phillips Seavey at Mad Cave.
- 1:09:45Phil: Yeah, I… that one… I've gotta read that one. It… I mean.
- 1:09:48Phil: You said it was great. It's great. The premise sounds uncontested. Also super excited for Batwoman number one. I'll also say Animan.
- 1:09:57Phil: Sounds ridiculous, I'm gonna have to read that one at some point, too. Looks… looks so bonkers.
- 1:10:05Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, that's… Episode number 227.
- 1:10:12Tad Eggleston: It just feels crazy.
- 1:10:15Tad Eggleston: 800-some-odd episodes in total.
- 1:10:19Tad Eggleston: Right. Yeah.
- 1:10:20Tad Eggleston: Shiss. Shiss.
- 1:10:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:10:23Tad Eggleston: And thank you guys for carrying this episode, because, like, I… just… I'm just tired, I have…
- 1:10:31Tad Eggleston: A lot of things that are supposed to be fun on my plate for today, this weekend, that, like, all of them feel more like chores than fun right now, just because of where the world is.
- 1:10:43Tyler Johnson: That sucks.
- 1:10:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I'm trying to put myself together, but, like, this is, like, the first time ever that I thought about skipping a week.
- 1:10:51Phil: Oof.
- 1:10:52Tad Eggleston: So, like, I'm happy that you were both here and able to carry the episode and make me feel better, so, like, thank you both for that.
- 1:11:00Phil: We were the Sam and Gollum to your Frodo, happily.
- 1:11:04Tyler Johnson: Sam and Gollum.
- 1:11:07Phil: Carrying you up that mountain.
- 1:11:10Tyler Johnson: If they're.
- 1:11:10Tad Eggleston: I mean, particularly with the encouraging me to crawl back into the wormhole at the beginning, you're totally pulling off the golem rule.
- 1:11:21Phil: I knew that's where I was going.
- 1:11:24Tad Eggleston: Wait, so…
- 1:11:25Tyler Johnson: Can I be Sam? Yeah.
- 1:11:27Tad Eggleston: Well, that's the point, is he claimed Gollum for himself, whether he wanted it or not, so you have to be Sam.
- 1:11:34Phil: Yeah?
- 1:11:35Phil: It's a heavy burden.
- 1:11:36Tad Eggleston: And, and, like, if you guys love Sam and Gollum, you really probably shouldn't be reading Babs right now.
- 1:11:46Tyler Johnson: Hey, before we go, do you guys read a webcomic called Tonks?
- 1:11:51Tyler Johnson: Or Twonk, T-W-O-N-K-S.
- 1:11:53Phil: I think I've…
