- 1:20Without any further ado, guys, let's get this
- 1:22show kicked off.
- 1:24Are you ready?
- 1:25I know that I'm ready.
- 1:27I hope you're ready.
- 1:28So ladies and gentlemen, this is the Inspirations
- 1:32for Your Life show.
- 1:35And again, I am your host, John C.
- 1:39Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:43podcast host, coach, graduate student, passionate lifelong learner.
- 1:49And yes, ladies and gentlemen, I am going
- 1:51to be an author in just a few
- 1:53months.
- 1:53Really excited about that.
- 1:55So this, ladies and gentlemen, in case you
- 1:58didn't know, it is Series 5, Show 12,
- 2:01Episode Number 2.
- 2:02You know, when your vision sharpens your decision,
- 2:06things improve.
- 2:10This week focuses on learning to see things
- 2:12that are actually, I'm going to say, a
- 2:16little bit deeper.
- 2:17And I think that's an important thing for
- 2:19us to realize, to have better courage and
- 2:23to live with integrity and purpose.
- 2:25Strong lives are built when awareness replaces assumption
- 2:27and intentional choice replaces drift.
- 2:30I think that's an important thing that a
- 2:33lot of people, like they don't realize that.
- 2:36So when we think about this, thinking about,
- 2:39you know, integrity, thinking about the purpose, our
- 2:42strong lives, they're built when awareness replaces assumption
- 2:46and intentional choices replace the drift.
- 2:49Configuring, ladies and gentlemen, improves decisions.
- 2:53Again, Series 5, Show 12, Episode Number 2.
- 2:56Number 1, clear direction beats rushed action.
- 3:00Every single time, hands down, okay?
- 3:03Clear direction, clear purpose.
- 3:07Intention beats the rushed action and the bad
- 3:10results that come from it.
- 3:12Number 2, steady focus builds progress.
- 3:16Steady focus builds progress.
- 3:18A little bit at a time, a little
- 3:20bit at a time, doesn't have to be
- 3:21a lot, that causes momentum to start.
- 3:26And then confidence gets built.
- 3:28And then you just keep doing it over
- 3:30and over again like it's second nature.
- 3:32Number 3, guys, patience improves timing.
- 3:36Stability strengthens leadership.
- 3:39And I think that's something a lot of
- 3:40people miss in life, that that is something
- 3:42that's very, very true.
- 3:44Stability strengthens our leadership.
- 3:46And that's a very important point that, again,
- 3:49a lot of people, they just kind of
- 3:52miss that.
- 3:52They kind of forget, like, you know, where
- 3:54it is or where it's going or things
- 3:56like that.
- 3:57And I think that's a very important thing
- 4:00for us to understand, all right?
- 4:03Number 5, guys, consistent effort produces results, okay?
- 4:09Consistent effort produces results.
- 4:11And again, it's not about having a lot
- 4:14of effort.
- 4:14It's about having consistent effort.
- 4:17That's a very, very important thing that I
- 4:20think a lot of people, you know, don't
- 4:22realize.
- 4:23They don't realize what it is or how
- 4:25it works.
- 4:26They just get all kind of, you know,
- 4:28confused.
- 4:29And I think that can be something that
- 4:30a lot of people maybe, maybe get stumped
- 4:36on.
- 4:36Number 6, guys, calm minds think clearly.
- 4:42Calm minds clink, think clearly.
- 4:47Number 8, a steady pace builds endurance.
- 4:50A steady pace builds endurance.
- 4:52So why not start with that steady pace
- 4:54now?
- 4:54Start getting strong and you'll be very happy
- 4:57with the level of success that you are
- 4:59actually starting to elicit.
- 5:01Number 9, guys, quiet reflection improves judgment.
- 5:06Quiet reflection improves judgment.
- 5:10Number 10, guys, balance protects momentum.
- 5:14Balance protects momentum.
- 5:17And again, a lot of people don't realize
- 5:19what momentum is or why things are a
- 5:22certain way.
- 5:22And I think that's because they don't understand
- 5:25their core.
- 5:26They don't understand what's going on in life.
- 5:27And I think that's a big problem for
- 5:30a lot of people.
- 5:32They want to go one way, but then
- 5:34for whatever reason, they just get lost in
- 5:36the shuffle.
- 5:38And that shuffle says, okay, I want to
- 5:40go this way, but I can't figure it
- 5:41out.
- 5:42So because of that, I'm just going to
- 5:44go any old way.
- 5:45And that's not good, right?
- 5:47Balance is a key to success.
- 5:48Number 11, focus strengthens direction.
- 5:53Discipline, number 12, supports progress.
- 5:56Our discipline supports our progress, which ultimately supports
- 6:00our success.
- 6:03Like when we get into a pattern of
- 6:05doing things, we actually enjoy what we're doing
- 6:09over and over again.
- 6:10And that creates longevity for success.
- 6:13Number 13, guys, stability.
- 6:24Number 14, guys, calm decisions reduce mistakes.
- 6:30You might have gone to Peel before and
- 6:33they feel like, you know, they're trying to
- 6:35burn the candle at both ends.
- 6:37They're working at solving a challenge, but all
- 6:40they're doing is creating more chaos.
- 6:43And people are like, this person's nuts.
- 6:46This person's not organized.
- 6:51They just start going downhill.
- 6:57Calm decisions reduce mistakes.
- 6:59Number 14, when we are calm, that spirit
- 7:04in us of being calm allows us to
- 7:06move forward with basically less or fewer mistakes.
- 7:11I think that's an important thing to realize.
- 7:14Number 15, guys, consistency builds confidence.
- 7:18Consistency builds confidence.
- 7:21Consistency builds confidence.
- 7:32And our focus helps us to go a
- 7:35certain way, but it gets us to see
- 7:39a perspective that maybe we didn't notice before,
- 7:44something that might be preventing us from doing
- 7:48something.
- 7:49Okay, that is our true, true focus.
- 7:55Our true focus happens when we understand that.
- 8:00It's not something that will just happen on
- 8:02a dime, right?
- 8:03Number 16, guys, focus reveals opportunity.
- 8:09Focus reveals opportunity.
- 8:13Number 17, guys, balanced effort sustains energy.
- 8:18Balanced effort sustains energy.
- 8:22Now, I'm not saying that effort is going
- 8:24to always be easy for you, but if
- 8:26you're in alignment with effort, you're going to
- 8:28find that the flow is going to be
- 8:31much more natural, okay?
- 8:39That's an important thing to understand, understanding like,
- 8:45you know, what that means.
- 8:47And what that means is that we all
- 8:50have a choice when we move forward.
- 8:54And staying balanced is something that we're constantly
- 8:58doing, equilibrium.
- 8:59Like in our own body, I don't know
- 9:00if you guys know this, your ears are
- 9:05a very responsible part of your body, not
- 9:07just to help you hear, but to keep
- 9:10your balance.
- 9:11You're basically your inner ear where your equilibrium
- 9:15gets controlled.
- 9:17The fluid of your ears, if they're not
- 9:18correct, well, you won't be able to walk
- 9:21very well.
- 9:24Your balance will be off.
- 9:26You might even feel nauseous.
- 9:28So balance is key, not just in everything
- 9:32we do, but even in our operations of
- 9:35how our body works.
- 9:38Number 18, guys, steady work builds success.
- 9:44Steady work builds success.
- 9:47It's not about you saying, I'm going to
- 9:51be steady today because I feel like it.
- 9:53You want to be steady all the time.
- 9:57It sets up a core foundation.
- 9:59And that core foundation allows you to move
- 10:02forward.
- 10:03Number 19, guys, calm thinking sharpens strategy.
- 10:09Calm thinking sharpens strategy.
- 10:12Number 20, guys, patience strengthens progress.
- 10:16Patience strengthens progress.
- 10:20Patience strengthens progress.
- 10:22But a lot of people get impatient because
- 10:24things are not happening now.
- 10:26So they decide they're going to get frustrated
- 10:30themselves and others.
- 10:32And it's going to do nothing, just impede
- 10:37your progress or stop you from moving forward.
- 10:42Number 21, guys, reliable habits create stability.
- 10:52When we have good habits, whether they're study
- 10:54habits, exercise habits, nutritional habits, relational habits, they
- 11:04set a standard in our life.
- 11:07And they allow us to see and experience
- 11:10that this is the kind of life we
- 11:13want.
- 11:15I've said this before, failing to plan is
- 11:21playing to fail.
- 11:30That's it, hands down.
- 11:33Number 22, guys, thoughtful action builds momentum.
- 11:38Thoughtful action, not this haphazard action.
- 11:47Thoughtful, when you elicit an action, do you
- 11:54always make sure that action is something that'll
- 11:58be welcomed?
- 11:58Or do you just do whatever you want?
- 12:01Most people just do what they want and
- 12:03they figure, well, I'll deal with it later
- 12:06because it's easier to ask for forgiveness than
- 12:13permission.
- 12:13I don't agree with that.
- 12:16I think that's a very haphazard way of
- 12:20not showing accountability.
- 12:24We've talked about that in the past.
- 12:26Number 22, guys, thoughtful action builds momentum.
- 12:31And if thoughtful action builds momentum, that means
- 12:35the process will get easier each time.
- 12:40Number 23, direction grows with clarity.
- 12:44The more that we understand something, I don't
- 12:47care whether we're talking about our schoolwork, whether
- 12:50we're talking about stuff at our job, or
- 12:54even things in relationships.
- 12:55When we understand something, it becomes clearer.
- 13:02The direction that we need to take, often
- 13:06defining our purpose, is shown to us when
- 13:10clarity becomes known.
- 13:14But clarity is not always part of the
- 13:17equation when we start because we don't know
- 13:19what it is we don't see.
- 13:21We don't know.
- 13:23So we move on and we figure that
- 13:26this is where we want to go, but
- 13:26we don't really go anywhere because we don't
- 13:29know what we're looking for.
- 13:31Hopefully that makes sense.
- 13:33Number 24, guys, focus improves performance.
- 13:39Let me see if I can give an
- 13:40example on this.
- 13:42If you're looking at an image and when
- 13:49you take the lens and you focus it,
- 13:52you can see the image.
- 13:56How about an electron microscope?
- 13:58When we focus, we can see what we're
- 14:04going to look at, and we can understand
- 14:09what things are and what they relate to.
- 14:14If things are clear or cloudy, it's like,
- 14:16well, I think it looks like this, but
- 14:20we're not sure.
- 14:20A lot of times we go through life
- 14:24with not having a clear picture.
- 14:29And I don't always mean that in our
- 14:31eyes.
- 14:31I mean in our perception, things we hear,
- 14:33see, touch, taste, smell, and feel.
- 14:36We don't get a proper sense of clarity.
- 14:41We're not able to focus because we don't
- 14:45know what to focus.
- 14:46We don't know whether it's the ring on
- 14:48the top of the microscope or it's the
- 14:49one on the bottom.
- 14:50We don't know.
- 14:51All we know is that it's blurry or
- 14:56that it's unclear.
- 14:57But what we are supposed to make clear,
- 15:01that sometimes takes some time to figure out.
- 15:06So focus does improve performance, but it's also
- 15:10another tactic to understand not only how to
- 15:14focus, but what to focus.
- 15:18Let's take an example.
- 15:19Let's say you're playing baseball, right?
- 15:24And the coach says, focus.
- 15:29If you're hitting the ball, it's probably obvious
- 15:32that he wants you to focus on the
- 15:36ball, the pitcher, right?
- 15:41If you're on base and he says, focus,
- 15:44maybe you don't know what that means.
- 15:46Maybe he wants you to watch the pitcher,
- 15:49watch the players so that you can steal
- 15:50the next base.
- 15:52He says, focus, focus, right?
- 15:55But he doesn't define what focus is.
- 15:59And I think that's a problem with a
- 16:00lot of leaders.
- 16:02They don't do this intentionally.
- 16:04They know the game plan.
- 16:06They know the playbook.
- 16:09And when they say, focus, and you don't
- 16:11focus, they're all frustrated.
- 16:14Focus, focus, focus.
- 16:17On what coach?
- 16:18On what coach?
- 16:21And they'll say, on the game, on the
- 16:22game.
- 16:23And you'll look back and say, what part
- 16:26of the game?
- 16:27The pitcher, the catcher, whatever.
- 16:29They need to be a little more, how
- 16:32can I say, graceful and understanding and explain
- 16:37things better so people don't become frustrated when
- 16:40they say, focus.
- 16:41And you stand there with a deer in
- 16:46the headlights.
- 16:48Focus on what?
- 16:50Focus improves performance, but we have to know
- 16:52how to focus and what to focus.
- 16:55And what does it mean to be focused?
- 16:58Does focus mean that I now see two
- 17:00rings on the microscope?
- 17:02Does focus mean that I now see a
- 17:04color?
- 17:06Does focus mean that something's not blurry?
- 17:08What does focus mean?
- 17:11I'm so glad that you asked me that
- 17:12question.
- 17:13And we're going to go to our good
- 17:14friends, yes, at Merriam-Webster.
- 17:17And I'm going to tell you from them,
- 17:20what does focus mean?
- 17:22According to Merriam-Webster, focus is a noun,
- 17:26a center of activity, attraction, or attention.
- 17:31But you can also say focusing.
- 17:35He's not focusing, right?
- 17:39The state or condition permitting clear perception of
- 17:43an understanding.
- 17:43That's the one I'm talking about.
- 17:47Adjustment for distinct vision.
- 17:49A point at which rays, as of light,
- 17:52heat, or sound, converge or from which they
- 17:56diverge or appear to diverge.
- 17:58The point where the geometrical lines or the
- 18:04prolonations conforming to the rays diverging from or
- 18:09converging toward another point intersect and give rise
- 18:12to an image after reflection by a mirror
- 18:15or refraction by a lens or optical system.
- 18:18The point of convergence of a beam, of
- 18:21particles such as electrons.
- 18:23One of the fixed points at which the
- 18:26corresponding directix defines the contact section.
- 18:31A localized area of disease or the chief
- 18:35site of a generalized disease or infection.
- 18:38The place of origin of an earthquake or
- 18:40a moonquake.
- 18:41Focus is also a verb.
- 18:45And Webster says, to cause to be concentrated,
- 18:49to adjust the focus, to bring into focus.
- 18:57A big one is concentrate.
- 18:59What the coach is really saying to you
- 19:02is concentrate.
- 19:03But my question is on what, coach?
- 19:06What do you want me to focus on?
- 19:07There's so many things on the field.
- 19:08I need a little bit of guidance here,
- 19:11coach.
- 19:14Sometimes they'll say, on the game.
- 19:17Yeah, coach, but what part of the game?
- 19:20I told you I'm not an expert at
- 19:22baseball.
- 19:24On the player, on the pitcher, on the
- 19:26and they shouldn't get aggravated by explaining that
- 19:29to you.
- 19:33Number 25, stability builds trust.
- 19:36So when we're able to focus something, we
- 19:40build trust.
- 19:41We build confidence in a situation, in a
- 19:45discipline, a subject, a topic.
- 19:49This happens a lot in college, especially in
- 19:51graduate studies.
- 19:52When we're able to focus and we're able
- 19:55to delineate something clearly, we get that aha
- 19:59moment.
- 20:00The moment where we're not just studying.
- 20:02The moment when the tools, the language is
- 20:05becoming ours.
- 20:09Number 26, guys, discipline supports achievement.
- 20:13But discipline is not something you just do
- 20:16overnight.
- 20:16Discipline is something that we have to understand.
- 20:20What am I disciplined to do?
- 20:22Am I disciplined to get up early, to
- 20:24go to bed early?
- 20:26Am I disciplined to do exercise?
- 20:27Am I disciplined to eat nutritiously?
- 20:30Am I disciplined to be on time at
- 20:32practice?
- 20:32Am I disciplined to throw the ball a
- 20:38certain way?
- 20:39Am I disciplined to watch the catcher, to
- 20:42watch the pitcher, to watch their eyes, to
- 20:46watch their body, how they stand?
- 20:50Number 27, guys, calm focus drives progress.
- 20:55Calm focus drives progress.
- 20:58And that's an important one.
- 21:01Number 28, consistency fuels success.
- 21:06Consistency fuels success.
- 21:09But how can we ever learn focus or
- 21:12consistency if we actually don't understand what the
- 21:16heck we're focusing on or why we're focusing
- 21:18on something?
- 21:20Right?
- 21:22I think that's an important point that many
- 21:25people just don't get.
- 21:29How do I focus?
- 21:31Where do I focus?
- 21:33What does it mean to be focused in
- 21:36this situation?
- 21:37I need some parameters here.
- 21:41Can you help me?
- 21:43Number 29, direction leads far.
- 21:49Steady direction leads you to go far, meaning
- 21:53it leads you to go far from the
- 21:56point you're at to where you want to
- 21:58be.
- 21:58So you're closer to success.
- 22:04Think about the last time somebody said to
- 22:06you, focus.
- 22:10Maybe they were trying to get you to
- 22:11stop daydreaming and read the material or focus
- 22:15on the board.
- 22:19Right?
- 22:20Take your attention and put all of it
- 22:23on this.
- 22:25Mark, focus.
- 22:27Chris, focus.
- 22:29I might even say something like, hey, Chris,
- 22:31focus on what I'm saying.
- 22:35When I sense a student or I sense
- 22:38someone is not following me, I try to
- 22:42get in their head and figure out, where
- 22:45did I lose you?
- 22:46OK, Chris, so how far apart are we?
- 22:48Do you understand what I mean about electrons?
- 22:51No.
- 22:51OK, do you know what matter is?
- 22:55Yes.
- 22:56Good.
- 22:57Now, do you understand how matter connects with
- 23:01electrons?
- 23:02No.
- 23:03All right, good.
- 23:03Now we know where to go.
- 23:05A lot of teachers and a lot of
- 23:07instructors and even leaders and speakers, they assume
- 23:11you know all this.
- 23:13My philosophy in whatever I teach, whatever I
- 23:16give a keynote on, I assume you don't
- 23:19know this.
- 23:20I give you an example and I say,
- 23:22hey, how many can relate to this?
- 23:25If you can't, then I realize I'm going
- 23:27the wrong way and I need to make
- 23:28the example clearer.
- 23:32Steady direction will lead you far.
- 23:39When somebody said to me the very first
- 23:41time, and it was a sports focus, the
- 23:46first thing I thought about was, OK, I've
- 23:50got to concentrate on the game.
- 23:51I was playing soccer.
- 23:53I think I used this analogy once before.
- 23:56And the hardest thing for me in soccer
- 23:59was not getting the goal.
- 24:01It was scoring the goal when I legally
- 24:05could because I kept going off sides.
- 24:10The coach never explained to me what off
- 24:14sides meant.
- 24:15He just assumed I knew.
- 24:18Thankfully, I had a good friend on the
- 24:20team that said, hey, John, you're a great
- 24:23kicker, but you keep going off sides.
- 24:26Off what?
- 24:27I don't understand.
- 24:28Oh, hang on.
- 24:29I get your point.
- 24:30I understand you don't get this.
- 24:33I know what off sides means.
- 24:36I had the same problem.
- 24:37Hang on.
- 24:38Give me a minute.
- 24:38Let me get my pen.
- 24:39And they draw something, and then they explain
- 24:40it.
- 24:41And when somebody relates to that similar situation
- 24:44that you were in, you're like, oh, I
- 24:49get it.
- 24:51But it didn't happen the first time.
- 24:54It took a few iterations to explain to
- 24:57me what focus means in this situation.
- 25:00Because focus can mean many different things, from
- 25:04paying attention, generally, to paying attention to a
- 25:10very specific detail.
- 25:12Think of focus in the words of paying
- 25:17attention.
- 25:19Put all your attention on one thing.
- 25:22If I told you right now, and you're
- 25:23watching the show, focus on my hat and
- 25:26all the beautiful colors in BelieveMeAchieve.com.
- 25:29If you're not watching the show and you're
- 25:32just listening, if I said, focus on the
- 25:36tonality of my voice and how that's making
- 25:40your ears feel, focus on the diction of
- 25:47each word that I say.
- 25:50Focus now on the time that I choose
- 25:58to pause between the words.
- 26:04And you will see it's getting longer.
- 26:12Now it is getting shorter.
- 26:15So you get my point.
- 26:17We have to know what the heck we're
- 26:20focusing on.
- 26:22Does that shed a little bit of light?
- 26:26Because so many times people teach things, and
- 26:29they presume that you understand how a cog
- 26:36holds a wheel together.
- 26:38They presume that, which they shouldn't do.
- 26:45Or they presume that you understand what the
- 26:48widget is that holds the thing of a
- 26:50jig to the thing of a bob together.
- 26:53The what?
- 26:54Exactly.
- 26:55It's confusing.
- 26:57So we have to talk in terms of
- 27:00the other person's interest.
- 27:02Dale Carnegie said it very well many years
- 27:04ago.
- 27:05Talk in terms of the other person's interest,
- 27:07and you will find that they gravitate, they
- 27:11learn, they respond, and they build rapport.
- 27:14Ladies and gentlemen, I am John C.

- 27:38And the next time someone says the word
- 27:40focus to you, and it's unclear, you can
- 27:43look back and say, okay, on what?
- 27:49On what?
- 27:50Yes, what specifically would you like me to
- 27:52focus on or pay attention to?
- 27:57You'll get an answer, and hopefully you'll be
- 28:01able to connect with what they want.
- 28:02Have a great one, everyone, and be well.
