- 1:22in the Pines. What's another What is it another case for Nick Carterive?
- 1:48Yes, it's another case for that most famous of all manhunters, the detective
- 1:52who's ability at solving crime is unequaled in the history of detective fiction. Nick
- 1:57Carter Master Detective Curious Adventure, Death in the Pines or Nick Carter and the
- 2:06Mystery of the murdered Driver. Well, let's see, there's a truck coming
- 2:20up the grade now and ought to be them. Yeah, just one thirty.
- 2:24That's the tape truck. All right now, you guys know what to
- 2:28do. We've done it often enough before. Sure, all right, get
- 2:31going. When the truck gets close enough, I put the setch like the
- 2:36driver's faith like before it stops fast enough, he's tight. Hey, what
- 2:47the places goes on here? What's the big idea? Get those hands up,
- 2:52Whitey, get down out of that camp. You guys can't get away
- 2:54with us. You want to stay alive. Get down out of that cap
- 2:58and get quiet and bring help me down with him. You're a bunch of
- 3:01crooks. Don't drop, they don't don't bec There ain't nothing we can do.
- 3:05Okay, boys, get busy, Get up on that truck and get
- 3:07that stuff down down in the road. Shake it up by We want to
- 3:10get out of here. Hey, he'd get boys pulled and Jake, we
- 3:13got another one to take care of. Meet. Hey, I know that
- 3:16voice. So you're the guy who's in back of all this hijacket now I
- 3:21know. Yeah, well I hope you'll tie it. Oh what's the idea?
- 3:25What you have to kill him for? Shut up, funk. You
- 3:28don't want to get bumped off too. But you didn't have to kill him.
- 3:31Hey, that changes our plants a little, jake. Get your man
- 3:35down off the truck. Pick these two steps up and put him back in
- 3:38the cab of the truck, and put a hole in the gas tank and
- 3:39touch a match to it. Okay, boys, come on down. There
- 3:43won't be much left for the cops to wake on when they get here,
- 3:46which is all right with me. I don't like to see him get killed,
- 3:49but when they know too much, it's the only way I say,
- 4:00corner, Yes, thanks very much, Yes, thanks so long. Might
- 4:08as well let me know the worst, mister catter. What I've been through
- 4:11a little more or less doesn't matter, is to take I'm sorry to have
- 4:15to tell you this, but your driver wasn't burned a dead. He was
- 4:19shot murdered before the truck was set on fire. I was afraid of that.
- 4:25Reagan was my oldest and best driver, been with me for ten years.
- 4:28You're having trouble with racketeers, Yes, have been for the past year.
- 4:30How do they work? Well? I operate about forty trucks holding vegetables
- 4:34and green stuff from South Jersey to the New York markets. Yes, we've
- 4:39done it tonight. So we get to New York market before morning. About
- 4:43a year ago, somebody called me on the phone and said he represented a
- 4:46protective agency and he'd like to sell me protection at twenty five dollars a truck.
- 4:49Twenty five dollars That truck. That's pretty steep, isn't it. He's
- 4:53exorbitant. I told him I wouldn't pay it. So what happened Two days
- 4:57later one of my trucks were stopped and the drivers were beaten. The produce
- 5:00was dumbed and destroyed. Next day the guy called again and I told him
- 5:03I wouldn't pay. Did you try getting protection from the state troopers? Sure?
- 5:08I did, and they did what they could. Never a trooper followed
- 5:11one of the trucks, so when one of their men rode on the truck
- 5:13as a helper, these trucks were never bothered. With the other trucks.
- 5:15And with the same old story, I say, how do you account for
- 5:19the fact that the trucks with the troopers on them were never touched. I
- 5:21don't know unless the hijackers had spies at the loading points to watch, if
- 5:26the trucks had their regular crewise, and what was the outcome this time?
- 5:30In the end, I had to agree to pay the twenty five dollars.
- 5:32Then for six months there was no more trouble. A week ago, this
- 5:36same guy called and said the end he had been raised from twenty five to
- 5:40forty dollars a truck. I told him I couldn't pay that because I didn't
- 5:44make that much. And you know what happened last night? Yes, yes,
- 5:48no, are you going to try to keep riding the stuff through?
- 5:51If you're going to help me, I will. I'll do it and begin.
- 5:56Rather like to put my assistant, Patsy Bowen in your office as a
- 5:58typist. Sure maybe she could learn something that will start us off in the
- 6:00right direction. Well, Patsy, did you have a nice eventful day in
- 6:14Tate's office? I learned a few things, Nick, If that's what you
- 6:16mean, good, let's have it. Mister Tate makes up the daily schedule
- 6:20of operations based on the orders he received. Then he turns the completed schedule
- 6:25over to Alaparo. Who's the fleet foremant Only mister Tate, the Power and
- 6:29Dave Morgan, Tate's assistant, know what the orders are. As far as
- 6:32I can find out, I see any suspicions, not yet. The Power
- 6:36has been with Pate nine years and Morgan for about four years. The trouble
- 6:41started about a year ago. Both of them rode the trucks. Morgan was
- 6:44one of the drivers that got beaten up, but knocked out cold before he
- 6:46could see anything. Doesn't leave us much in the way of anything to go
- 6:50on, does it. I'm sorry, Nick, That's all I could get
- 6:53today. I don't feel bad, Patsy. He did what you could.
- 6:56What's the next step. I want to talk to the State who found the
- 7:00truck in which Reagan was killed. He may be able to tell me something
- 7:03that's been overlooked. You say you read my report, mister Carter, I
- 7:18don't know that I can tell you anything else. Were you on the State
- 7:21police force when Tates started having his trouble about a year ago? Yes,
- 7:26I was well. That business of the hijackers never picking in a truck guarded
- 7:29by state troopers needs explaining. Could there have been any leak from this end,
- 7:33absolutely not. I wrote several of the trucks myself, none of having
- 7:36knw where we were going. Into Tate's office, gave us our arts,
- 7:41and we went out on the road. Just as soon as we got those
- 7:43orders. Good, then the leak must be on Tate's end. Now,
- 7:46the next thing, your report gives the impression that the thug simply stopped Tate's
- 7:49truck, killed the driver in cold blood, and then burned the truck for
- 7:53good measure. Was that your personal impression? Well, no Ah. When
- 8:00I first got there, I was suspicious because the truck hadn't gone off the
- 8:03road or collided with anything that would cause a fire or a wreck. Then
- 8:07I remember the Tates trucks had been having trouble a while bag So I took
- 8:11another look around, and the result of that second examination the truck was surrounded
- 8:13by crates which had been thrown off the truck, crates that were smashed and
- 8:18broken, but not burned. Now, if the hijackers were going to burn
- 8:20the truck, why bother to throw all those crates off the truck first?
- 8:24It just didn't make sense. That's what I wanted to know. I'd say
- 8:28the gangs started out to do the usual job, smashing the cargo and manhandy
- 8:31the crew. But then something happened, something that made them switch the tactics,
- 8:35and they did something they had never done before. They killed the driver.
- 8:41Yeah, that explanation would fit the facts as I saw them. But
- 8:43what do you suppose caused the change in plan? But I could make a
- 8:46guess. Maybe Tate told me that Reagan was his oldest driver. Yeah,
- 8:50how somebody in tates out that must be in league with the hijackers. That's
- 8:52the where they could know as much as they do. I believe that Reagan
- 8:58recognized one of Tate's men in the high Gang. Sure, and that fits
- 9:03right in with the idea that somebody in takes out but was crossing him.
- 9:05Yes, mister Carter, I believe you've hit something. Have you arranged with
- 9:18mister Tate for me to go to work for him? I oh know,
- 9:20Kebby. I haven't said anything to him. I don't want him to know.
- 9:22Well, then, how do you know I can get the job?
- 9:24Tate's lost so many men since Reagan has killed a couple of nights ago that
- 9:26he'll be glad to hire anybody. Patsy you'll fix you up with the necessary
- 9:31papers, licenses, references and so forth. Were you'll close and don't wash
- 9:35your neck, and you'll have no trouble getting hired. And what do you
- 9:37want me to look for? Especially according to what Patsy says, the leak
- 9:41either goes through tape, which hardly seems lightly, through Laparo or Morgan,
- 9:46or through somebody else we haven't found hot about yet, So get a line
- 9:48on things in general, not anyone who may look suspicious. Oh and if
- 9:52you're riding a truck that gets held up, don't try to shoot it out,
- 9:56skebby. That's that thing's right. We'll see about that when the time
- 9:58comes. Forty to one shot against her getting stopped. But that's the same.
- 10:03Watch your step. These men, whoever they are, have two murders
- 10:05on their head, and they won't balk it a couple more, all right,
- 10:22Men looking for jobs laying up over here, new men over here?
- 10:26Hey, buddy, who's the guy over there to death? Oh? That's
- 10:30all a paro the fleet foreman. Oh that's the guy. Looks like a
- 10:33tough eight dove. Worry fella, he ain't turn of nobody down these days.
- 10:37This outfit's got the finger on it. They had forty men walk out
- 10:41on him yesterday, and I got to hunch this new gang ain't gonna last
- 10:45long either. Are you meaning a kind of the killings the other day?
- 10:48Yeah? That and the beating up of a couple other drivers recently. Yeah,
- 10:52night before land. Hey, daddy's so good? Is a tib what's
- 10:56the difference a job, ain't it? Hey? Who's the other guy?
- 11:00Oh? That's Dave Morgan, old man takes the system? All right,
- 11:03report to the garage at once, Next Mike Cousins and then listen, Toparo,
- 11:07hear on me papers, m you worked here before, and Jim sure
- 11:13I drove for you, But never mind, Dad, you ain't working here
- 11:16no more? Right Morgan? Right, Aparo? Nothing doing on that guy,
- 11:20Abert. What's the matter? I got a good record. I ain't
- 11:22in my head one maybe not? But Jake warned here, get out next
- 11:26that big farm. Who's next? Off me? Uh? The name's Wilson.
- 11:31Where's your papers? Oh? Yeah here mm hmm Wilson man. Yeah,
- 11:37okay, you're high. Report to Matt Steigun truck number eleven. You
- 11:41start as helper at twenty three bucks a week. Satisfied. Sure, boss,
- 11:46Okay, for I mean tell Steiger picks up his love tonight at Freeman's
- 11:50farm. Damn stop, Jaycey, he knows where this is get going?
- 11:52Right? Thanks? So they took you on to this, Scubby. I
- 12:07thought they would. Yes, I falling from a lunch room where I just
- 12:11ate anything happened yet. Well, just before they gave me a job,
- 12:13an old timer named Mike Clawson was turned down. He used to work for
- 12:18ten years ago. A plaparel wouldn't take him back. I see, maybe
- 12:22they didn't want to take on anyone who ever worked that before, or who
- 12:26has been there for long. Well maybe it doesn't mean anything, Nick,
- 12:28but it looks at what the trouble, Scubby. I'm not sure Nick.
- 12:35If I just realized the guy in the poolt next to me here is I'm
- 12:39saying a word when he hits booth if I came into this group. But
- 12:43he hasn't dialed in number, said anything yet. Looks as if somebody's on
- 12:46to you already. Any idea of who it could be, no idea at
- 12:50all. How could anybody know about me so soon? There's always a chance
- 12:54that somebody's recognized you I'll keep your eyes open, scuty, don't start anything
- 12:58any worse. No, I've been to at once if anything worthwhile happens,
- 13:01and good luck to you. What are you going to be doing? I
- 13:05have several lines of investigation that I want to follow up here in the city.
- 13:09There are certain angles of this case that I want to clear up here
- 13:11before I do anything else. So long shad we see you soon? I
- 13:15hop gosh, man, driving one of these trucks is nonsense, is it?
- 13:33How are your main chads? Well, I've been driving the truck around
- 13:37at the city and today's being like this at all. We spent the afternoon
- 13:41loads of the stuff on the truck. Now we got to spend all night
- 13:43riding it back. It sounds you don't like it, huh, I beginning
- 13:46to say it wasn't such a bright idea. I aren out of this paid
- 13:50doctor, especially with the kids to get indeat. I'm throwing in free a
- 13:54chair up to my applies for weeks. And what's the matter? What's your
- 14:01stopping for you? Somebody is signaling us with a flesh like to stomp like
- 14:05when the dot don't stop? Man, may be a hold up? Remember
- 14:09Roman Tate's artists. No truck stop for nothing. Oh it's a state Trooper's
- 14:13nothing to worry about. Oh yeah, you ain't see the uniform now,
- 14:16okay, I'll get out and see what he wants. Hey, what's the
- 14:22matter of what? Hey that's our Parny uniform. Yeah in no regular cop.
- 14:26This is the guy, all right? What are your fellows? Take
- 14:30care of the drive? Look you know trap takeing? No move? I
- 14:35got your covering out. Yeah, that takes care of you. Get right
- 14:43now for you can here? You are man? Yeah? You want to
- 14:50do no more fighting for a while, Okay, fight, Come on.
- 15:09Gosh, I'm tired, Patsy. I've done more of my own leg work
- 15:11today than I've done in years. I'm almost wishing it kept Scubby here to
- 15:16do the walking around going out on the truck myself. Did you find out
- 15:20anything, Nick, Yes, Patsy, I think so, but I can't
- 15:24be sure for a little while yet, not until I get some more answers
- 15:26to some of the thousands of questions I've asked today. There have been several
- 15:30messages for you. I think this is probably the only one that's really important.
- 15:33Yeah, I thank you, m M. I thought so. He's
- 15:41trying to borrow money. At least all that much of it makes me positive
- 15:46on the right track. Any report from the state troopers, Percy, Yes,
- 15:50I think they've located a place. They're going to call you later this
- 15:52evening when they get the details. Good. That'll give me time to join
- 15:54them before they make a raid. I don't want to miss being in at
- 15:58the kill. No. Hey, oh you're awake, Wilson. Uh?
- 16:18Yeah, who are you? That's Tiger your driver? Oh? Yeah,
- 16:23I remember now they stopped us. I tried to fight, and they not
- 16:29beyond How about you? Yeah, they count me too. Yeah. I
- 16:33wonder why they didn't shoot us and be done with it. Yeah, I
- 16:36wonder, Hey, where are we now? Any idea? No, but
- 16:40I seem to remember taking a long ride last night after we left the trucks.
- 16:45I wonder what time it is. I don't know. It's still dark
- 16:48though. Yeah. Hey, Wilson, I've been wondering. I heard one
- 16:52of them thugs call you Dick and Copper when they were scrapping with you.
- 16:57Are you a copper, well kind of one? Yeah. Just trying to
- 17:03get a line on what's going on in the state, don't you. Yeah,
- 17:06how in the heck did that guy know what was me? Did tight
- 17:08know what? Y'all? No, nobody knew about me working for tape at
- 17:12me and my boss. Hey, wait a minute, what Right after I
- 17:18got the job, I phoned my boss and somebody in the next phone booth
- 17:22overheard what I told him. Boy, they drapped me neat as you please.
- 17:26I probably was afraid of it looks like it. Well, the first
- 17:32thing to do is to get out of here. Well, I've been working
- 17:34at the rope suits. They got my tied hands tied together with and I
- 17:38can't budget my dole. They're too tight for me. Well, I think
- 17:42maybe I can get mine and lose it. I have time. It's my
- 17:47boss taking me several tricks to get out of ropes like this. Yeah,
- 17:49the show to get us out of this one. Then I can't hold it
- 17:53that. Yeah, somebody's coming and we got that read head of punk waked
- 18:00up horses doing a minute now with flash here. Come on, you leave
- 18:07me, assist you to a chair. Sorry, you can't walk by yourself
- 18:11tied up like that, but that wouldn't be etiquette. Come on, come
- 18:15on, cut the comedy, wake up you, come on, Copper,
- 18:18get him on his old fool. Hey, what's the matter, Hey,
- 18:22what's just trying to do here? Yeah? I might want me to soften
- 18:26him up for you. Let's see if he talks first, maybe he'll talk
- 18:29without any sweet Okay, but I hope he needs some waking over. I
- 18:36enjoyed that. All right, Punk, you're gonna talk talk about what's no
- 18:41use stolen them? We know your Nick Carter's man. Well, if you
- 18:44know that, what she's want me to say? We know your cold Karter?
- 18:47Yesterday before you left New York. What'd you say to what'd you tell
- 18:51him? Hey? I know you. Eh, you're the guy who wore
- 18:53the Phony State Troopers uniform and you held us up last night. Yeah,
- 18:57well, knowing that ain't gonna up you. And then come on, spill
- 19:03it how much? See you know? Okay, he ain't gonna talk,
- 19:07Mike. Kid's gotta be a real job. I gotta go to Wike on
- 19:10him. Yeah, I guess you're right, Jake, go ahead and make
- 19:14it good. Sure. Oh, let me take my coat off, iace
- 19:15so I don't feel cramped. Let me have it. I'll put it on
- 19:19the back of the chair. Thanks, Mike, you better put my gun
- 19:22in the pocket and my coat so they won't get me away when I really
- 19:25get going. Okay, now let's see some action, all right, you
- 19:30redheaded stool pigeon. Now spill it, spill it all round. Come on,
- 19:37Jake, there's trouble off the wall. That's a funny fast Do you
- 19:45see what I see? What? What do you mean? Jake left his
- 19:48coat hanging in the back of that chair. There there's a gun in the
- 19:49pocket of that coat. Oh boy, want to break if we can only
- 19:52get loose just a minute. My hands are almost freak good. Yeah.
- 19:59Ye, now I get the feet loose. That doesn't now the gun?
- 20:07Now let me come back. Hey, what's drop that gun here? Cupboard?
- 20:11Oh yeah, well this will show. Oh yo, what what's it
- 20:14here? You killed me? You give you got me? Wilson, get
- 20:21me loosen, I'll give you a hand. I'll be back in the right.
- 20:25The gun is empty. See we're in a spot. Come on,
- 20:30get here, yeah, go on, listen, leave there here man.
- 20:38Oh see, thanks, Wilson. Gosh am, I plad to get out
- 20:42of them ropes. Hey man, this is the screwiest thing I ever heard
- 20:45of. Yeah, why do you suppose they beat it off like that.
- 20:48You got me, But come on, let's get out of this place.
- 20:51They might come back as fast as they went out here. Okay, give
- 20:53me a chair. I'll break this store down for you. Okay, gosh,
- 21:03there he is on the floor, the boss and two holes threw his
- 21:07forehead. You sure hit him square in the bulls. Where'll I take off
- 21:12his mask and see if I know? Man, it's mister Tate. Who
- 21:18the owner of the trucking company. Mister Tate. Yeah, Tate bracketeering his
- 21:21own business, attacking his own trucks. But that doesn't make sense, man,
- 21:26boy, I'll say it doesn't. Why should he want to destroy his
- 21:29own business? Hen, why would he ask it to investigate? Hey,
- 21:34we got to get out of here. Where there can you see him?
- 21:41Yeah? Oh, they say troopers, come on your head, Come on
- 21:51here, ram number, don't shoot, we're coming out. Get that door
- 21:55open before they shoot. Who surrender? Get your hand up? Yeah to
- 22:00him? Man, watch the back of the house. Oh gosh, are
- 22:03we plan to see you? Eh? Keep your hands up? Oh yeah,
- 22:07sure sure. Look I'm Scubby Wilson and this is Matt Steiger. I'm
- 22:10Nick Carter's assistant. Yo. Look at who's a dead man lying there?
- 22:12Oh that's mister Tait. I just shot him. Oh you did let him
- 22:18send you to the chair, all right? Oh no, well you don't
- 22:21understand. He's the chief of the hijackers. Well, he was holding us
- 22:23prisoners here, it's said, good one. Where's that gun you killed him
- 22:26with? It's in the other room. Gave your hands up. But officer,
- 22:30you know, said pose, you're gonna tell me you shot him in
- 22:33self defense. Yeah, that's just what I did. Well, look,
- 22:37you could ask Matt. That's right over, sir. He was gonna kill
- 22:41a spool. Yeah, sure, where's that gun he was gonna kill you
- 22:45with? Oh, but it was in his hand when I saw it last
- 22:48Well it ain't here now, you're a bum liar. However, I suppose
- 22:53I after you shot him between the eyes, killing him instantly, he walked
- 22:59over to the windows. Who is gun away? And then came back here,
- 23:02lay down and died. Oh but gosh, officer, I saw him
- 23:06put your hands out. Huh what put your hands out? How about you
- 23:10can't put handcuffs on me? Ah, watch me sure they're good and tight.
- 23:14So yeah, well that's Nick Nick. Oh hello, Scubby having a
- 23:18good time. You'll know this guy mis that cotter and does he know me?
- 23:22I'll tell him who I am? Nick, Yes, sergeant, I'm
- 23:25afraid I have to confess that I do know him. He's my assistant,
- 23:29although he hasn't been much of assistance in this case. Shall I let him
- 23:33go then, yes, he is. I'll take charge him. Okay,
- 23:37if you say something? Oh gosh, Nick, am I glad to see
- 23:38you? Oh? This is Matt Steiger, the guy who was driving the
- 23:41truck. I was on Hello's cot Hey. Look, I heard some shooting
- 23:45a few minutes ago. Did you get some of the gang? Yes,
- 23:48Scubby Morgan and four men who ran the car off the road and caught him
- 23:52all. Morgan's pretty badly wounded, but he pulled through. So Morgan was
- 23:56in audit after him. Morgan was the head of the gang. Oh no,
- 23:59No, Morgan was ahead of the gang. Nick. The head of
- 24:00the gang is lying there dead and I shot him, put two bullets in
- 24:04him in self defense. Who is he? You know him? Know him?
- 24:08It's mister Tate, mister Tate. I he had nothing to do with
- 24:12this, He sure did, Nick, Well, he was holding us prisoners
- 24:15here. Sure Matt can tell you that's true, mister Carter. He tried
- 24:18to kill Wilson, and Wilson shoty. I tell you Tate had nothing to
- 24:22do with his Gangscully, Oh what makes you so sure? Nick? I
- 24:26did a lot of investigating in town today, and I've found that Morgan has
- 24:29been trying to borrow money anywhere and everywhere he could to take advantage of what
- 24:32he called a chance to get going a good business dirt cheap. Well,
- 24:37that obviously meant Tate's business, especially since the forty dollars a truck the racketeers
- 24:41asked was unquestionably intended to drive Tate out of business rather than to get the
- 24:45money out of him. But Morgan was one of the drivers who got beaten
- 24:48up nick who said, so Morgan, nobody else knew anything about it,
- 24:52and he gave him a swell alibi. I think that Reagan, the driver
- 24:56was killed the other day, probably was shot because he recognized Morgan. But
- 25:00everything you say about Morgan could have been true of Tate just as well.
- 25:03Not quite scubby. I found out several other things during my investigation today that
- 25:07proved definitely that Morgan's the one. But Nick I shot Tate not five minutes
- 25:11ago? Well, he was trying to kill me. I wonder you shot
- 25:18him five minutes ago? How does that happen that he's been dead for at
- 25:19least three hours? Dead for three hours, no question about it. Gregor
- 25:25Motis is already begun to set in. Scub me. Somebody's putting one over
- 25:29on you. What do you mean, Nick, where's the gun you shot
- 25:32him with? Well, the trooper took her. Yeah, that's right here
- 25:33it is, mister Carter. Thanks, mm hmm. Look yeah, how
- 25:41does it happen that you shot him with blank cartridges? Oh? Nick,
- 25:44don't hear the shells I just took out of that gun you used? Four
- 25:47of them have been fired previously, and you can see that the other two,
- 25:51the two left for you to fire, have had the bullets pried out
- 25:52of them. They see the mark the edge of the shell. Yeah,
- 25:57so you couldn't have shot it. What, mister Carter, I saw Wilson
- 26:02plugg him. I saw him falling dead as the door closed behind him.
- 26:07There's no question that, There's no question. But what you thought? You
- 26:10saw that? But it was all planned, just that way planned certainly?
- 26:15How come you were able to get out of the rope you were tied up
- 26:18with so fast? How come there was nobody in the room when you got
- 26:19hold of the gun. Why do you suppose that gun was left for you
- 26:22could get your hands on it. That is what happened, isn't it?
- 26:26Yes, Nick, as right as if you'd been here to see it.
- 26:30It couldn't have been any other way. Date probably had a hunch Morgan was
- 26:33guilty and trailed him here. Morgan caught him, shot him with his gun.
- 26:37Then he wiped his prints off it, and he planted it where you
- 26:40could get at it. Then, at the psychological moment, Morgan, with
- 26:44a mask over his face, opened the door so you could see him,
- 26:47and shot at you. Then you shot at him, as he knew you
- 26:49would, using the two shells he had left in the gun for you,
- 26:52the two shells with no bullets in them. Then he pretended to Paul dead,
- 26:56carefully shutting the doors. He did so so that you couldn't see what
- 27:00happened. Next, Oh, I see it. And then he put Tate's
- 27:03body there by the door with a mask over his face. Right, gosh,
- 27:07When you opened the door, there was Tate's body shot through the head
- 27:11with a very gun you held in your hand, A gun on which the
- 27:14police would find your fingerprints and yours. Only Morgan would have made sure they
- 27:18found it. Boy, what a set up. It was perfect. Matt
- 27:22would have had to swear he saw me do it, and I was so
- 27:26completely fooled. Boy, I would have confessed to the murder in any court
- 27:30in the country. Ask you still trust too much to what you hear and
- 27:34see. Before you can be the really first class detective, You'll have to
- 27:37learn to distrust everything until you vanalyzed it in the light of all the evidence.
- 28:00This has been another of the strange adventures of Nick Carter, Master Detective,
- 28:04which are brought to you regularly at this time by W. R.
- 28:07Mutual. Well, Nick, what about next week's story? Can you give
- 28:11us a hint? Next week? My story concerns a murderer who killed his
- 28:15victims according to the sign of the zodiac under which they were born. A
- 28:18very unpleasant and dangerous man, I might add, yes, definitely, Patsy
- 28:22and I got to close in his trail that he tried two different times to
- 28:25get rid of us. But in his attempts to be very clever, he
- 28:27made a bad mistake and Nick caught him and caught the murderer too, I
- 28:30imagine, quite right after a chase. I call the story The Horoscope Murders.
- 28:37So long, see you next week. So long, So long to
- 28:40you Nick and Patsy in the Strange Adventure you have just heard. Nick Carter
- 28:45was impersonated by Lon Clark, Patsy by Helen Choate, Scubby by John Ka.
- 28:49Original music was played by Luke White. The entire production was written and
- 28:55directed by Jack McGregor. Next week, at the same time, listen to
- 29:10another curious experience of Nick Carter entitled The Horoscope Murders or Nick Carter and the
- 29:17Mystery of the Avenging Astrologer. This story is a copyrighted feature of Street and
- 29:26Smith Publications, Incorporated. The Return of Nick Carter is produced in the studios
- 29:30of WR and is broadcast over most of these stations every Saturday evening at seven
- 29:36o'clock Eastern War time. And don't forget that the adventures of Nick Carter's adopted
- 29:41son, Chick Carter, are broadcast over most of these stations Mondays through Fridays
- 29:45at five point thirty pm Eastern War time. This is mutual welcome back.
- 30:07Well the villain's plan here was not the worst possible plan, but it did
- 30:15depend on everyone being inattentive and not digging deeper to things, which is probably
- 30:26not a good basis for planning when you're going up against Nick Carter. I
- 30:32also loved at the end when Patsy was talking about the serial killer, making
- 30:37the observation that he was unpleasant. I guess that's something we can all agree
- 30:41on. All right, Well, on to some listener comments and feedback,
- 30:45and we actually have a couple regarding some Nick Carter episodes, and we'll go
- 30:51ahead and start with Renee, who has a comment regarding episode eleven oh four,
- 30:56Death after Dark her and she says, the Nick Carter episode reminded me
- 31:03of Sherlock Holmes. As I was listening, I kept wondering how Nick was
- 31:07going to get pigmies into World War two America. Thanks for the great work
- 31:11you do. I'm also enjoying the war podcast. Well, thanks so much,
- 31:15Renee, and that's available at Thewar dot Great Detectives dot Net. Pigmies.
- 31:21There's definitely a good reason for referencing Pigmies regarding Sherlock Holmes, because the
- 31:26pigmy features very prominently in Sign of four, which is my favorite Sherlock Holmes
- 31:33novel. Sparky writes in regarding episode ten eight Nick Carter Records of Death,
- 31:37it reminded me of this movie My name is Julia Ross, where the heroine
- 31:42is kidnapped and held in a beautiful mansion. Sounds like an interesting plot.
- 31:48It's available if you have the mind to check it out. It is available
- 31:53on DVD through the Columbia Film War Classics three collection, which is eighty dollars,
- 32:07so a little pricey on that part. But thanks for the tip,
- 32:09Sparky and Finley. Charles Quel Enters emails in love your podcast as I'm a
