- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas, it's so good to be here again. Lucas: I'm glad you're here. You know, I was thinking about the weather today. Luna: Oh, me too. It's really cold outside. Lucas: It is. And that's a perfect topic for today. Let's learn how to talk about weather in Swahili. Luna: Nice. So how do I say 'It's cold'? Lucas: In Swahili, you say 'Ni baridi.' Repeat after me: Ni baridi. Luna: Ni baridi. Lucas: Exactly. Perfect. Luna: Ni baridi. Can I use that to complain about the weather today? Lucas: Absolutely. So if you step outside and feel cold, you just say 'Ni baridi.' Let's practice it once more. Luna: Ni baridi. Lucas: Good. Now what about when it's hot? We say 'Ni joto.' Try it. Luna: Ni joto. Lucas: Yes. So 'Ni baridi' means it's cold, and 'Ni joto' means it's hot. Luna: That's easy. So if I'm in a hot room, I say 'Ni joto.' Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick comparison. Imagine it's a cold morning. You say... Luna: Ni baridi. Lucas: And on a sunny afternoon... Luna: Ni joto. Lucas: You've got it. Now let's add two more. What about when it's windy? In Swahili, you say 'Kuna upepo.' Luna: Kuna upepo. Lucas: Yes. 'Kuna' means 'there is', and 'upepo' is 'wind'. So 'Kuna upepo' means 'There is wind' or 'It's windy'. Luna: Kuna upepo. That's a good one. Lucas: And when it's sunny, we say 'Kuna jua.' 'Jua' is the sun. So 'Kuna jua' means 'It's sunny' or 'There is sun'. Luna: Kuna jua. I love that. So today, I could say 'Ni baridi na kuna upepo.' That's cold and windy. Lucas: Yes! That's exactly right. You can combine them. Luna: So 'Ni baridi na kuna upepo.' That describes today perfectly. Lucas: Yeah. And if it were hot and sunny, you'd say 'Ni joto na kuna jua.' Luna: Ni joto na kuna jua. Lucas: Great. Let's run through all four again. I'll say the English, you say the Swahili. It's cold. Luna: Ni baridi. Lucas: It's hot. Luna: Ni joto. Lucas: It's windy. Luna: Kuna upepo. Lucas: It's sunny. Luna: Kuna jua. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a little conversation. I'll be someone asking about the weather. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Hali ya hewa ikoje? Luna: That's 'How is the weather?' right? Lucas: Yes. So you can answer by describing it. Luna: Ni joto na kuna jua. Lucas: That's perfect. You just said 'It's hot and sunny.' Luna: Awesome. So if someone asks me that, I can respond with one of our phrases. Lucas: Exactly. And you know, building on what we've learned before, you can also add 'sana' to intensify. For example, 'Ni baridi sana' means 'It's very cold.' Or 'Kuna jua sana' means 'It's very sunny.' Luna: Oh, I remember 'sana' from before. So 'Ni baridi sana' would be great for today. Lucas: Absolutely. Let's practice that. Repeat after me: Ni baridi sana. Luna: Ni baridi sana. Lucas: Very good. And 'Kuna jua sana'. Luna: Kuna jua sana. Lucas: You're doing wonderfully. Now, let's imagine a scenario. You're on the phone with a friend in Tanzania, and they ask about the weather where you are. Luna: Okay, I'll try. Hali ya hewa ikoje? Lucas: And you answer... Luna: Ni baridi na kuna upepo. Lucas: That's exactly it. You just had a mini conversation in Swahili. Luna: That feels really good. Luna: It's very cold. Lucas: Kuna jua na ni joto. Luna: It's sunny and hot. Lucas: Perfect. You're ready to talk about the weather in Swahili. Keep practicing these phrases, and next time you step outside, describe it in Swahili. Luna: I will. Thanks, Lucas. This was fun. Lucas: You're welcome, Luna. And thank you for joining us.
