Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Miz vs. Sánchez, Soto/PCA/Acuña Jr. on fire, Skubal trade deadline sweepstakes
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:04Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with you for the next half hour
- 0:06Speaker 1: or so. It is June first, it is no longer early,
- 0:11Speaker 1: and as usual, we have a lot of cool things
- 0:14Speaker 1: going on in our game. We're going to talk about
- 0:16Speaker 1: some hitting stars today, We're gonna talk a lot about
- 0:19Speaker 1: pitching stars. We're gonna talk about Trek Schouobl. We're gonna
- 0:22Speaker 1: talk about some injuries too. Of course, we're going to
- 0:24Speaker 1: talk about injuries we always do, but first the pitching
- 0:28Speaker 1: and I want to begin with a tweet from Jeff
- 0:30Speaker 1: Passing yesterday about the months of May for Jacob Miserowski
- 0:36Speaker 1: and Christopher Sanchez. Now, just a week ago, I put
- 0:40Speaker 1: out a video for The Athletic basically saying Christopher Sanchez
- 0:45Speaker 1: has to start the All Star Game if you based
- 0:47Speaker 1: it on right now. And then we had another spectacular
- 0:50Speaker 1: performance from the Miz yesterday. So here's the tweet from
- 0:53Speaker 1: Jeff Comparing the statistics for Sanchez and Misowski. They're extremely
- 0:59Speaker 1: close and you can go either way with this. Sanchez
- 1:03Speaker 1: with the obvious consecutive scoreless inning streak. Misarowski has allowed
- 1:08Speaker 1: oh one run in thirty eight and a third innings,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Sanchez two thirds more of an inning, Miserowski the better
- 1:14Speaker 1: peripheral numbers. Okay, So which one? You could argue it
- 1:18Speaker 1: all day long? And it reminded me of a conversation
- 1:21Speaker 1: I had going back to the year two thousand when
- 1:25Speaker 1: I joined the sporting news from the Baltimore Sun and
- 1:27Speaker 1: my boss was a guy named John Rawlings, And I asked, John,
- 1:31Speaker 1: which do you value more? Writing or reporting? Writing the
- 1:36Speaker 1: actual construction of sentences and words, how you make this
- 1:40Speaker 1: thing sound, or reporting the gathering of information and reporting
- 1:45Speaker 1: of news. And his answer to that was writing or reporting.
- 1:49Speaker 1: He said, yes, Missowski or Sanchez. My answer is yes,
- 1:54Speaker 1: And again, you can argue it until you're blue in
- 1:56Speaker 1: the face. It's a fun argument. Actually, Sarah Langs here
- 1:59Speaker 1: she is yesterday. There have been twenty instances since at
- 2:02Speaker 1: least nineteen hundred of a pitcher allowing one or no
- 2:06Speaker 1: runs in a calendar month with at least thirty innings
- 2:09Speaker 1: pitch Sanchez and Miserowski. This may are the only ones
- 2:13Speaker 1: to do it in the same month in the same year.
- 2:16Speaker 1: That's how good these guys have been. And it got
- 2:19Speaker 1: me thinking. It got me thinking again, going back to
- 2:22Speaker 1: that video I did for The Athletic last week about
- 2:24Speaker 1: who will start the All Star Game. Now, obviously Sanchez
- 2:28Speaker 1: would probably rate the edge if they were disclose because
- 2:31Speaker 1: the game is in Philadelphia. But let's take it a
- 2:34Speaker 1: step further. Let's not just talk about Sanchez and Miseroski
- 2:38Speaker 1: on the NL staff for the All Star Game. Let's
- 2:41Speaker 1: talk about what that entire NL staff might look like,
- 2:45Speaker 1: because we might see I'm exaggerating a little bit, but
- 2:48Speaker 1: maybe not much. We might see the first no hitter
- 2:52Speaker 1: in All Star Game history. Let's look at a potential staff. Now,
- 2:56Speaker 1: these are just some of the names. It's not a
- 2:58Speaker 1: complete staff. And if I'm leaving your favorite pitcher off,
- 3:01Speaker 1: please just spare me with the vitriol. But this group
- 3:04Speaker 1: is pretty good. Sanchez, Miserowski, Chris Sales, Chris Sale, Chase Burns,
- 3:11Speaker 1: Paul Skeens, Yoshinoba Yamamoto, Shoeo Tani probably won't pitch, but
- 3:16Speaker 1: he would be deserving as a pitcher. Bryce Elder, Nolan McClain,
- 3:19Speaker 1: who had a really good start again yesterday. And then
- 3:22Speaker 1: your back end of the bullpen, Rasa Legalsias, Joan Duran
- 3:26Speaker 1: and Mason Miller, Hard to hit that group. It will
- 3:30Speaker 1: be a lot of fun to watch those guys in action.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It will be a lot of fun, presuming they are
- 3:36Speaker 1: all healthy, to watch the American League hitters try to
- 3:40Speaker 1: deal with what they would be dealing with in that scenario.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It's gonna be amazing to see MS might throw one
- 3:46Speaker 1: hundred and nine that night. Now, the sport is not
- 3:49Speaker 1: just about pitching. We have as well some hitters who
- 3:53Speaker 1: are getting really hot. Some of the biggest stars in
- 3:56Speaker 1: the game, two in particular, and I'll talk about a
- 3:58Speaker 1: third guy who is not yet a big star, but
- 4:02Speaker 1: certainly someone who tracks or attracts a lot of attention.
- 4:05Speaker 1: All right, let's start with Juan Soto. New York Mets
- 4:08Speaker 1: actually swept the Marlins over the weekend, scored twenty five
- 4:11Speaker 1: runs in three games. Good for them. We'll see if
- 4:13Speaker 1: they can do it against better competition in the days
- 4:16Speaker 1: and weeks ahead. Soto nine home runs in his last
- 4:20Speaker 1: fifteen games. His ops is up to nine ninety four.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Guess what he's Jan Soto yet again. Perhaps the bigger
- 4:28Speaker 1: resurgence in Atlanta Ronald Acuna Junior. Now, remember he missed
- 4:33Speaker 1: those twelve games with that straan hamstring in May. He
- 4:37Speaker 1: really hasn't been Ronald Lacunya Junior yet. Now he is
- 4:42Speaker 1: home runs in four straight games, five homers in those
- 4:45Speaker 1: four games, and he is the key player on a
- 4:49Speaker 1: team that, even with him being only just average, Ronald
- 4:53Speaker 1: Acunya Junior is the first in the major leagues to
- 4:56Speaker 1: forty wins, the team with a nine game lead in
- 5:00Speaker 1: Division nine games over the Nationals, nine and a half
- 5:03Speaker 1: over the Phillies. Wow, Ronald the Kuno Junior, and I
- 5:06Speaker 1: want to talk about one more guy again, not one
- 5:08Speaker 1: of the biggest stars yet, but he had an amazing
- 5:11Speaker 1: game Saturday on our air Fox Pete crow Armstrong of
- 5:15Speaker 1: the Cubs. In that game, four for five, home run, double,
- 5:19Speaker 1: spectacular catch to end it. PCA has had his ups
- 5:23Speaker 1: and downs. They hit him leadoff for eight games, seemed
- 5:27Speaker 1: to free him up a little bit, and last night
- 5:29Speaker 1: hit second got a hit in that game as well.
- 5:32Speaker 1: But if he ever puts it all together, he's going
- 5:35Speaker 1: to be one of the most exciting players. Actually, he
- 5:38Speaker 1: already is one of the most exciting players in the game.
- 5:41Speaker 1: He will be at that point one of the most
- 5:43Speaker 1: exciting and electric and incredible performers because he has so
- 5:47Speaker 1: many different skills that he can show off on a
- 5:50Speaker 1: given night, and he did that Saturday night. It was
- 5:53Speaker 1: the Pete Crow Armstrong Show.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Kratz. I know you love dad jokes.
- 5:56Speaker 1: This is not a joke.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Ridge's five and one travel power Bank is the answer
- 6:00Speaker 2: to all of your messy wires all over the place issues.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent. I don't need more tube socks.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I need this because somebody is going to use my
- 6:09Speaker 3: phone that I fully charged and then dies halfway through
- 6:13Speaker 3: the softball game that I go to. So this will
- 6:15Speaker 3: lock it in and my friend next to me who
- 6:17Speaker 3: forgot to charge his phone.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Ridge makes life better. They revolutionize the wallet right now.

- 6:53Speaker 2: support our show and tell them we sent you.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Also, this weekend, we had a ton of injuries, a
- 6:59Speaker 1: ton of actually upsetting injuries. Of course, all injuries are upsetting,
- 7:04Speaker 1: but one of them went to a guy who was
- 7:06Speaker 1: going to be in the All Star Game for sure,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and a guy who is keyed to one of the
- 7:10Speaker 1: great stories in our game this season so far. I'm
- 7:14Speaker 1: talking about the White Sox and I'm talking about Munataka Murakami.
- 7:18Speaker 1: He's out four to six weeks with a hamstring injury.
- 7:22Speaker 1: The White Sox, even without him, swept the Tigers over
- 7:24Speaker 1: the weekend. We will get to the Tigers in the
- 7:27Speaker 1: inside dish, and the White Sox, of all teams, hold
- 7:31Speaker 1: the second American League wild card. They're gonna have to
- 7:34Speaker 1: hold on without Murakami now for some time, but he'll
- 7:38Speaker 1: be back in short order. Now, Hazous Sanchez, this was
- 7:41Speaker 1: a really weird injury. It occurred yesterday at Camden Yards.
- 7:46Speaker 1: A fan, a young fan thirteen years old, reportedly thought
- 7:50Speaker 1: that Hazu Sanchez was signaling to him to play catch.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Sometimes you'll see that and outfield are playing catch between
- 7:56Speaker 1: innings with a kid in his stands. The kid throws
- 7:58Speaker 1: the ball. Sanchez wasn't ready for it. He wasn't really
- 8:01Speaker 1: thinking they were going to play catch. He gets hitting
- 8:03Speaker 1: the wrist. Hopefully he's okay. It was just an accident.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It sounded like there was no animosity. Obviously, it's a
- 8:11Speaker 1: kid trying to play catch. But let's hope he's okay,
- 8:14Speaker 1: because that was most unfortunate. Connor Griffin, Pittsburgh pirates spectacular
- 8:19Speaker 1: rookie flexer muscle strain in his right elbow. Now, this
- 8:22Speaker 1: is not expected to be too long an injury, and frankly,
- 8:27Speaker 1: given that he's twenty years old, he's in his first
- 8:30Speaker 1: major league season. At some point this year he probably
- 8:34Speaker 1: was going to need a break. And by the way,
- 8:36Speaker 1: that's true for all the other great rookies. I'm not
- 8:39Speaker 1: saying you put them on the phantom il, but guys
- 8:41Speaker 1: like McGonagall and Weatherholt, they're playing a one hundred and
- 8:45Speaker 1: sixty two game season when in the minor leagues, and
- 8:48Speaker 1: a lot of these guys weren't in the minor leagues
- 8:50Speaker 1: very long to begin with, but in the miners they
- 8:53Speaker 1: often get well they always get the Monday off. They
- 8:56Speaker 1: often get a scheduled day off during the week and
- 8:58Speaker 1: maybe at DH Day too. They are not trained in
- 9:01Speaker 1: the miners right now. This is kind of a problem
- 9:03Speaker 1: in the system to withstand the rigors of a one
- 9:07Speaker 1: hundred and sixty two game season. So Connor Griffin, who
- 9:11Speaker 1: had actually been playing really well, had gotten hot. This
- 9:15Speaker 1: might be a good thing for him. Ellie Dela Cruz
- 9:18Speaker 1: hamstring injury. They're going to know more about him today,
- 9:21Speaker 1: hopefully with the imaging taking place. He's having a great year.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I wrote a long feature about him a couple of
- 9:27Speaker 1: weeks ago. The Reds have kind of settled into mediocrity,
- 9:31Speaker 1: but without Dela Cruz they clearly would be a team
- 9:34Speaker 1: challenged to stay afloat in the NL Central And finally,
- 9:39Speaker 1: Garrett Crochet Boston Red Sox. Now the Red Sox clearly
- 9:42Speaker 1: are going nowhere, but they've been awaiting the return of
- 9:45Speaker 1: Crochet and he had a very minor setback, as he
- 9:49Speaker 1: described it, with his left flat but he's been shut down.
- 9:52Speaker 1: You see the tweet from Jamia Webster right there. He's
- 9:55Speaker 1: the Red Sox reporter for Nessen. Garrett Crochet feeling a
- 9:58Speaker 1: little lat tight on his left side. We just spoke
- 10:02Speaker 1: with him. He feels its minor. Didn't want to even
- 10:04Speaker 1: really label it a setback. It's been feeling better since
- 10:07Speaker 1: it happened last Thursday at Fenway. Set for imaging next week. Again,
- 10:12Speaker 1: you don't want to see this with Crochet. You want
- 10:15Speaker 1: to see him back on the mound. So all these
- 10:17Speaker 1: injuries taking place, I always say every season at the
- 10:22Speaker 1: start when people ask for predictions, tell me who's going
- 10:25Speaker 1: to get hurt, tell me who's going to get traded,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and I will tell you who exactly is going to
- 10:31Speaker 1: have a really good season. Of course, we don't know
- 10:33Speaker 1: that any of that at the start of the season,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but we're going to get into a situation with someone
- 10:39Speaker 1: that is hurt and with a team that obviously could
- 10:44Speaker 1: be making trades, and we're going to talk about that team.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Yes it's the Tigers. Right after this timing out for
- 10:56Speaker 1: the Inside Dish, the part of the show where I
- 10:58Speaker 1: talk about a story I've written than happening in the game.
- 11:01Speaker 1: All of the above, and today I'm going to talk
- 11:03Speaker 1: about the column I published today in The Athletic. It's
- 11:07Speaker 1: a column about the increasing likelihood that Trek Scouble will
- 11:11Speaker 1: be traded assuming he is healthy. And remember he is
- 11:15Speaker 1: recovering from an innovative new surgery to remove a loose
- 11:18Speaker 1: body from his left elbow, and obviously we are all
- 11:22Speaker 1: awaiting his return. He is scheduled to throw again today
- 11:25Speaker 1: in a simulated game. Now, I initially thought when this
- 11:30Speaker 1: talk started, I don't know, a couple of weeks ago,
- 11:32Speaker 1: about the possibility of trading Schooble, I thought it was premature.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And actually, when the deadline talk starts in spring training
- 11:41Speaker 1: in April, even early May, it's kind of a pet
- 11:45Speaker 1: peeve of mine. I always think, what are we doing here?
- 11:48Speaker 1: It's not yet time. There's so much time to go
- 11:50Speaker 1: until the deadline that you really can't assess just yet.
- 11:54Speaker 1: And like pet peeves, or most pet peeves, they're not
- 11:57Speaker 1: entirely rational, and I'm not always right either. So with Scooble,
- 12:03Speaker 1: my feeling was from the beginning that eventually the Tigers
- 12:07Speaker 1: would snap out of it, that they'd be in contention
- 12:10Speaker 1: in a weak al Central, in a weak American league
- 12:13Speaker 1: with an expanded playoff system. How far out of it
- 12:17Speaker 1: could they have fallen? Well, then I started to talk
- 12:20Speaker 1: to some executives over the weekend, just asking what they
- 12:23Speaker 1: thought of the whole situation, and they said, man, look
- 12:27Speaker 1: at the Tigers record. They're not coming out of this,
- 12:30Speaker 1: or at least they're not coming out of it to
- 12:32Speaker 1: the point where they're going to be able to contend.
- 12:35Speaker 1: So I did a little research, talked to my friends
- 12:37Speaker 1: at step stats Perform, and they kind of verified that
- 12:41Speaker 1: the Tigers are in a really bad place. They got
- 12:44Speaker 1: swept by the White Sox over the weekend. They're now
- 12:46Speaker 1: twenty two and thirty eight. That is sixteen games under
- 12:51Speaker 1: five hundred, sixteen games. Just to get back to five hundred,
- 12:55Speaker 1: you'd have to go sixteen to oh right, or that
- 12:57Speaker 1: kind of thing. Well, that's going to be differ called
- 13:00Speaker 1: for a team that has fourteen players on the injured list,
- 13:04Speaker 1: ten pitchers. Now, they got Kerry Carpenter back yesterday. They're
- 13:09Speaker 1: expecting Labor Torres to come back relatively soon as well.
- 13:13Speaker 1: That should help. But their offense is among the worst
- 13:16Speaker 1: in the game, their defense is among the worst in
- 13:19Speaker 1: the game, and without Scooble, they are four and twenty one.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Since learning of the news that he would require the
- 13:26Speaker 1: nano'eedle scope surgery, the Tigers are four and twenty one.
- 13:31Speaker 1: So I asked the people its stats perform? Okay, how
- 13:34Speaker 1: rare would this be under the current playoff format? Because,
- 13:38Speaker 1: of course, in the past, for many, many years, there
- 13:41Speaker 1: are only two teams that made the World Series, and
- 13:43Speaker 1: they were the only ones to reach the postseason. Then
- 13:45Speaker 1: we expanded a little bit and now we've got six
- 13:48Speaker 1: teams from each league. So I said, Okay, since twenty two,
- 13:52Speaker 1: what are the or what teams have made it under
- 13:55Speaker 1: these circumstances? Sixteen games under five hundred? No team has
- 14:00Speaker 1: made the playoffs since coming or since starting or I'm sorry,
- 14:03Speaker 1: let me get this right. No team has made the
- 14:05Speaker 1: playoffs since at some point going sixteen games under five
- 14:09Speaker 1: hundred since twenty twenty two, when this current format was instituted.
- 14:14Speaker 1: The team that was the furthest back or the furtherest
- 14:17Speaker 1: under five hundred was the twenty twenty four Astros. They
- 14:22Speaker 1: were twelve under. The Tigers are sixteen under. You might say, whoa, Well,
- 14:26Speaker 1: wait about what about the twenty twenty twenty twenty four
- 14:31Speaker 1: Detroit Tigers, who of course had that incredible run in
- 14:35Speaker 1: the final two months of the season. Well, they were
- 14:38Speaker 1: never more than nine games under five hundred, they were
- 14:41Speaker 1: ten games out of a playoff spot, and the current
- 14:44Speaker 1: Tigers are only seven games out of a playoff spot,
- 14:47Speaker 1: only seven So from that perspective, these Tigers are in
- 14:52Speaker 1: a better position than the twenty four team was. But
- 14:55Speaker 1: at the same time, those games under five hundred are
- 14:58Speaker 1: really telling, and to get back in it, it's just
- 15:01Speaker 1: going to be really difficult for them. If you look
- 15:04Speaker 1: at it, you do the math, to go and win
- 15:09Speaker 1: just eighty five games, win eighty five games, and that
- 15:11Speaker 1: probably wouldn't be good enough for the playoffs, but maybe
- 15:14Speaker 1: in this American league it would be. Right now, we
- 15:16Speaker 1: have the final playoffs spot being held by a sub
- 15:20Speaker 1: five hundred team, the Toronto Blue Jays, So let's get
- 15:22Speaker 1: him to eighty five. To get to eighty five, they
- 15:25Speaker 1: would need to go sixty three and thirty nine the
- 15:28Speaker 1: rest of the way. Okay, So where am I going
- 15:31Speaker 1: with this? Where I'm going with this is it sure
- 15:34Speaker 1: looks like the Tigers aren't getting back into contention, even
- 15:37Speaker 1: if they get healthy, even if Scooble returns and is
- 15:40Speaker 1: his usual amazing self. So assuming he does get back
- 15:46Speaker 1: pitch effectively, and we don't know how this is going
- 15:49Speaker 1: to go, it's a new surgery, and while everything so
- 15:52Speaker 1: far is great, while he has checked every box, while
- 15:55Speaker 1: the progress is rapid, we just don't know how he
- 15:59Speaker 1: will pitch. But I assume he's going to be back
- 16:02Speaker 1: in relatively a short amount of time, maybe the middle
- 16:06Speaker 1: of the month, maybe, if they're really cautious, the end
- 16:09Speaker 1: of the month. And once he's back and establishes that
- 16:12Speaker 1: he is the Trek schoobl who is coming off back
- 16:15Speaker 1: to back cy Young Awards, at that point, it would
- 16:19Speaker 1: seem to me the Tigers are going to have little
- 16:21Speaker 1: choice here. You either lose him for a draft pick
- 16:25Speaker 1: by offering him a qualifying offer at the end of
- 16:27Speaker 1: the season if you keep him the whole way, or
- 16:30Speaker 1: you make a trade in which you would get greater
- 16:32Speaker 1: projected value than you would if you just got a
- 16:36Speaker 1: draft pick that was somewhere in the thirties the low
- 16:39Speaker 1: thirties next year. So then you ask, Okay, where's this going.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Who is going to be in it? It will be,
- 16:46Speaker 1: of course the usual suspects, But really, if you're a
- 16:49Speaker 1: contender and Tarrek Scoogl is out there, you're going to
- 16:53Speaker 1: at least check in and see what the price would
- 16:55Speaker 1: be and make a decision for your team whether it
- 16:59Speaker 1: would make Now, there are three problems with acquiring him.
- 17:03Speaker 1: One is he's only a rental. Two, he's going to
- 17:06Speaker 1: be owed if at the deadline he has traded. If
- 17:09Speaker 1: it takes until then, about ten million dollars. That's a
- 17:13Speaker 1: lot of money for any team, even a team like
- 17:16Speaker 1: the Dodgers. And then finally, because he would be traded
- 17:19Speaker 1: in the middle of a season, you're not going to
- 17:21Speaker 1: be able to make him a qualifying offer. He would
- 17:23Speaker 1: be ineligible for a qualifying offer. You could not get
- 17:27Speaker 1: a draft pick on the back end. So I wrote
- 17:30Speaker 1: about some of the teams that might be involved. The
- 17:32Speaker 1: Dodgers clearly would be one, and yes, I know they've
- 17:35Speaker 1: got Snell and Glass now coming back off the il,
- 17:37Speaker 1: They've got River Ryan TRIPLEA. They seemingly have an embarrassment
- 17:41Speaker 1: of pitching riches, but they always have pitching injuries too.
- 17:45Speaker 1: And with the potential for a salary cap or at
- 17:49Speaker 1: the very least some form of restrictions that will be
- 17:53Speaker 1: greater than they are today, the Dodgers might view this
- 17:56Speaker 1: as something of a last call and an possibility, an
- 18:01Speaker 1: opportunity to make one last push push their payroll even higher.
- 18:05Speaker 1: They clearly don't care about money. They've got one of
- 18:08Speaker 1: the best form systems in baseball. They clearly would be
- 18:10Speaker 1: in some of the other teams I mentioned. The Padres,
- 18:14Speaker 1: of course they're going to be in. They've got aj
- 18:16Speaker 1: Preller as their GM. They've got a staff that is
- 18:21Speaker 1: still questionable rotation, I should say that is still questionable.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Their bullpen, of course is the best in the game.
- 18:26Speaker 1: They need offense, at least from what we've seen so far.
- 18:29Speaker 1: But Aj Preller would be in, and I would not
- 18:32Speaker 1: be surprised, as I wrote, if he is already calling
- 18:34Speaker 1: around trying to get prospects from other teams to put
- 18:36Speaker 1: in a Schooble deal. The Phillies people would say, well,
- 18:40Speaker 1: they've got Sanchez, they've got Zach Wheeler, what do they
- 18:42Speaker 1: need Trek Scougle for. Well, their owner, John Middleton and
- 18:46Speaker 1: their president Baseball Operations are among the most aggressive people
- 18:50Speaker 1: in the game, most competitive people in the game, and
- 18:53Speaker 1: as I wrote, I don't expect them if Schooble is
- 18:56Speaker 1: available to simply say, nah, we're good. Phillies would be in.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Yankees would be in, even though they have, of course
- 19:04Speaker 1: a very deep rotation, and then I mentioned some small
- 19:07Speaker 1: market teams as well, Milwaukee I wrote about them last week.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Tampa Bay always seems to play big on the big names,
- 19:13Speaker 1: even if they don't often acquire them. Baltimore with Michaelllias
- 19:18Speaker 1: under pressure. And then two teams that perhaps have the
- 19:21Speaker 1: greatest need for a starting pitcher right now. That would
- 19:24Speaker 1: be the Toronto Blue Jays, who have an entire rotation
- 19:27Speaker 1: on the injured list, and the Chicago Cubs, who are
- 19:31Speaker 1: still without Justin Steele and Kate Sorry Kate Horton. They're
- 19:36Speaker 1: of course presumptive ace. Matthew Boyd is coming back, Edward
- 19:40Speaker 1: cabrere wia back, but they could use obviously another starter.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I don't know which team is going to jump to
- 19:48Speaker 1: the four here, and we don't know exactly how this
- 19:50Speaker 1: is going to play out. In fact, it's really still
- 19:53Speaker 1: early to talk about all this because we haven't seen
- 19:57Speaker 1: school will come off this surgery. We don't know how
- 19:59Speaker 1: this is going to go. And if for some reason
- 20:03Speaker 1: he comes back and has another problem with the elbow,
- 20:07Speaker 1: or for some reason he comes back and just isn't
- 20:10Speaker 1: as effective again, we don't know how any of this
- 20:13Speaker 1: is going to go, then the entire equation changes. So yes,
- 20:17Speaker 1: it is still early to talk about this. But at
- 20:20Speaker 1: the same time, given the Tiger's position and the way
- 20:24Speaker 1: I outlined it, sixteen games under five hundred, it's going
- 20:29Speaker 1: to be awfully tough for them to come out of this,
- 20:32Speaker 1: even with Scooble coming back, even with Carpenter now back
- 20:36Speaker 1: and Torres joining him. At some point soon they are
- 20:39Speaker 1: all but buried. All right, that's it for the inside dish.
- 20:43Speaker 1: We'll be back with Grilling Ken right after this. All right,
- 20:53Speaker 1: time now for Grilling Ken, the part of the show
- 20:55Speaker 1: where I answer your questions. Let's get right to them.
- 20:58Speaker 1: First one comes from I can't even pronounce this, but
- 21:01Speaker 1: the question is what would the Brewers have to give
- 21:04Speaker 1: up for a two month rental on Terek? Okay, this
- 21:07Speaker 1: is a good question because it speaks to the value
- 21:10Speaker 1: of a rental, and I would expect to get Schoogle.
- 21:14Speaker 1: It's going to take probably at least one top one
- 21:16Speaker 1: hundred prospect, even though he is only a rental. So
- 21:20Speaker 1: the Brewers have all of these infielders. They've got Cooper
- 21:25Speaker 1: Pratt and Jet Williams ready to get to the big leagues.
- 21:27Speaker 1: They're on the verge of the Big leagues left side infielders.
- 21:30Speaker 1: They've got Jesus Mate made and Luis Pagna. They're coming.
- 21:34Speaker 1: They've got others as well. I don't know exactly what
- 21:38Speaker 1: it would take, but I would assume it's going to
- 21:40Speaker 1: be a package of two or three players at least,
- 21:44Speaker 1: and one of them being a top one hundred guy.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Not sure about that, And there are all kinds of
- 21:49Speaker 1: ways to do these kinds of deals. The Tigers might say,
- 21:52Speaker 1: you know what, we'd rather have a lot of different
- 21:55Speaker 1: players who have big upside than one top one hundred guy.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I don't know. Usually teams prefer the top one hundred guys.
- 22:03Speaker 1: So we'll see. But the Brewers have, according to the
- 22:06Speaker 1: Athletics Keith Law, the number one system in the game.
- 22:09Speaker 1: They certainly have the ability to make this trade if
- 22:12Speaker 1: they want to. If you're the Brewers, though, it's ten million,
- 22:16Speaker 1: and it's given up your future, and they value their
- 22:19Speaker 1: future more than most teams because of course they are
- 22:21Speaker 1: a small market team. All right, next question, it's when
- 22:25Speaker 1: it comes from Cody Kleig eighty one oh five. What
- 22:27Speaker 1: is your take on the Pirates and what they should
- 22:30Speaker 1: do at the deadline? Pirates are a really interesting team,
- 22:33Speaker 1: and we talked about Griffin going on the IL. It's
- 22:36Speaker 1: not expected to be a long stint. Ryan O'Hearn came
- 22:39Speaker 1: back yesterday, had a good day, and he is of
- 22:41Speaker 1: course crucial to their offense. And they don't need starting pitching.
- 22:45Speaker 1: They've got that. They've got it in abundance. They've got
- 22:48Speaker 1: Carmen Majinski not happy with being bumped in the rotation.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I don't think they really need offense, which is the
- 22:54Speaker 1: first time I've said that in a long time. They've
- 22:56Speaker 1: got a top ten offense right now. What they need
- 22:59Speaker 1: clearly is bullpen help, and part of the motivation for
- 23:02Speaker 1: sending mcjinsky to the bullpen would be to improve that
- 23:06Speaker 1: aspect of the team. Believers are often available in abundance
- 23:10Speaker 1: at the deadline, but you often also have to overpay.
- 23:13Speaker 1: So it's going to be really interesting to see how
- 23:15Speaker 1: the Pirates approach this. They are having a resurgence season.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Are they a playoff team? Maybe they could be with
- 23:22Speaker 1: the right moves. All right, Next question, so it comes
- 23:26Speaker 1: from video video Game Nation twenty six. Would you rather
- 23:29Speaker 1: have Aj Preller or Dave Dombreski as your president of
- 23:33Speaker 1: baseball operations if you are making a baseball operations department.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Interesting question because these two are, along with Jerry Depoto,
- 23:42Speaker 1: I would say, the most aggressive gmpobos in the game,
- 23:47Speaker 1: and there is a double edged swore to all of them. Now,
- 23:52Speaker 1: in the case of Preller, people say every year, including me,
- 23:56Speaker 1: oh man, he's gonna run out of prospects. He can't
- 23:58Speaker 1: keep doing this and they're going to be stuck with
- 24:00Speaker 1: these contracts. The latter might be true, the contracts that
- 24:03Speaker 1: could be a problem, but he has a unique way
- 24:06Speaker 1: predes of regenerating prospects, finding new ones, and making deals.
- 24:12Speaker 1: So I would like to have him as a pobio,
- 24:15Speaker 1: but not necessarily with the contracts that he's awarded, some
- 24:19Speaker 1: of them which were really orchestrated by Peter Seidler, the
- 24:22Speaker 1: late owner Dombrawski. The rap on him is, yes, he
- 24:26Speaker 1: will get you to where you want to be. He
- 24:28Speaker 1: will win, but he will leave your team somewhat bare
- 24:32Speaker 1: once he leaves. That's a fair question and a fair criticism.
- 24:37Speaker 1: But he wins, and the Poto it's a little bit different,
- 24:40Speaker 1: and they haven't won big yet. But he's an aggressive
- 24:43Speaker 1: GM too. So to answer the question, I would prefer
- 24:46Speaker 1: one of these types of guys or risk or verse
- 24:50Speaker 1: GM relatively risk averse. So I would prefer that to
- 24:55Speaker 1: this group of gms we have now, some of them
- 24:59Speaker 1: who are are always reluctant to make a move, always
- 25:02Speaker 1: don't want to get burned, always afraid to trade a prospect.
- 25:06Speaker 1: You have to be aggressive, in my opinion, to win
- 25:09Speaker 1: and to do big things. The Dodgers are aggressive. The Yankees,
- 25:13Speaker 1: I know their fans don't believe this all the time.
- 25:16Speaker 1: They're aggressive too. All right, with that, we are going
- 25:19Speaker 1: to say goodbye. I want to thank you everyone for
- 25:21Speaker 1: watching and listening. Foul Territory is coming up at one
- 25:24Speaker 1: pm Eastern. It's Todd Fraser, Kevin Polar and Scott Braun hosting.
