SPEAKER_00: And we're back with another episode of Unlocking Huntington Beach.
• 0:05
  SPEAKER_00: What's going on?
• 0:06
SPEAKER_00: My name is Lane Stone, and we've got another good one for you today.
• 0:10
SPEAKER_00: We're going to be talking all about riding your bike in Huntington Beach.
• 0:14
SPEAKER_00: So let's get into it.
• 0:16
SPEAKER_00: Now you can bike almost the entire Huntington Beach coastline without sitting in traffic, searching for parking at every stop, or constantly dealing with cars.
• 0:23
SPEAKER_00: But there are a few things you need to know before you start.
• 0:26
SPEAKER_00: Where you begin completely changes the length of the ride.
• 0:29
SPEAKER_00: The path gets extremely crowded near the pier, especially in the summer and during major events.
• 0:34
SPEAKER_00: You cannot ride your bike onto the pier itself.
• 0:37
SPEAKER_00: And if you're on an e-bike, there are speed and access rules that you need to follow.
• 0:42
SPEAKER_00: Today I'm taking you along the ultimate Huntington Beach bike route, starting near Sunset Beach and continuing past Bolsa Chica, Dog Beach, the Huntington Beach Pier, Huntington State Beach, and the entrance to the Santa Ana River Trail.
• 0:55
SPEAKER_00: I'll show you where to stop, where to find restrooms and water, where the busiest sections are, and how to shorten the route if you don't feel like turning your casual beach ride into an Olympic qualifying event.
• 1:05
SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to Unlocking Huntington Beach.
• 1:06
SPEAKER_00: My name is Lane Stone, born and raised here in HB, and I've been running a top real estate team right here in beautiful Huntington Beach for more than 14 years.
• 1:14
SPEAKER_00: And one of the best ways to understand this city is to see it from the beach path.
• 1:19
SPEAKER_00: Driving along Pacific Coast Highway gives you the general idea, but riding the trail lets you see how different each section of Huntington Beach coastline really is.
• 1:27
SPEAKER_00: The route is flat, paved, and accessible to riders with a wide range of experience levels.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_00: The main coastal trail begins around Warner Avenue and continues south through Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington City Beach, and Huntington State Beach.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_00: California State Parks describes the full paved corridor between Bolsa Chica and Huntington State Beach as approximately eight and a half miles.
• 1:48
SPEAKER_00: A ride beginning around Warner Avenue and returning to the starting point is roughly 16 miles, depending on exactly where you turn around.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_00: For the simplest version of this ride, start where Warner Avenue meets Pacific Coast Highway.
• 2:00
SPEAKER_00: That's considered the northern beginning of the main Huntington Beach Coastal Bike Trail.
• 2:04
SPEAKER_00: There are nearby parking, restroom, and water options, although availability can vary depending on the day and how crowded the beach is.
• 2:11
SPEAKER_00: But if you want to include Sunset Beach, you can begin slightly farther north at the Sunset Beach Greenbelt.
• 2:17
SPEAKER_00: The greenbelt, officially called Linear Park, runs parallel to the beach and includes a bike path, grass areas, restrooms, and nearby parking.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_00: Just understand that Sunset Beach is an optional northern extension.
• 2:29
SPEAKER_00: It's not the same continuous beachfront path you'll ride once you reach Warner Avenue.
• 2:33
SPEAKER_00: For families, visitors, or anyone who wants the least complicated route, I would begin at Warner.
• 2:38
SPEAKER_00: For more experienced riders who want to explore Sunset Beach first, start at the Greenbelt and carefully connect south toward Warner using the appropriate route.
• 2:46
SPEAKER_00: You do not need an expensive road bike for this route.
• 2:48
SPEAKER_00: A beach cruiser, hybrid bike, or standard commuter bike is completely fine because the path is paved and mostly flat.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_00: An e-bike can make the full round trip easier, but riders still have to follow the path's posted speed limits and local rules.
• 3:01
SPEAKER_00: The path is shared with pedestrians.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_00: Having a motor does not transform it into a freeway.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_00: Bring a helmet, water, sunscreen, a bike lock, a small repair kit, a portable phone charger, and a light layer for the return trip.
• 3:14
SPEAKER_00: And make sure your tires, brakes, and battery are ready before you begin.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_00: The middle of Huntington State Beach is a deeply inconvenient place to discover that your bike has been operating entirely on optimism.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_00: The best time to start is generally earlier in the morning.
• 3:27
SPEAKER_00: You'll encounter fewer crowds around the pier, cooler temperatures, and usually lighter wind.
• 3:32
SPEAKER_00: Weekday mornings are ideal if your schedule allows for it.
• 3:35
SPEAKER_00: Weekend afternoons are the busiest, especially during summer, holidays, and major events.
• 3:39
SPEAKER_00: Also check whether Huntington Beach is hosting something like the U.S.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_00: Open of Surfing, Fourth of July celebrations, a marathon, or the Pacific Air Show.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_00: Those events can change the path access, crowd levels, and parking.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_00: This guide is evergreen, but event closures are not.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_00: Check current city and event information before riding during a major weekend.
• 3:56
SPEAKER_00: With that settled, let's get rolling.
• 3:58
SPEAKER_00: If you begin in Sunset Beach, take some time to ride through the Greenbelt before heading south.
• 4:03
SPEAKER_00: Sunset Beach stretches roughly a mile and a half from Anderson Street to Warner Avenue and feels noticeably different from the busier areas around the Huntington Beach Pier.
• 4:11
SPEAKER_00: It's quieter, more residential, and has a small beach community atmosphere.
• 4:15
SPEAKER_00: This is a good place to begin if you want breakfast, coffee, or a slower warm-up before joining the main coastal route.
• 4:21
SPEAKER_00: You also find restrooms and parking near Linear Park, but spaces can become limited on warm weekends.
• 4:26
SPEAKER_00: Once you reach Warner Avenue, you're ready to begin the main oceanfront portion of the ride.
• 4:30
SPEAKER_00: From Warner Avenue, ride south through Bolsa Chica State Beach.
• 4:34
SPEAKER_00: This is one of the calmest and most open sections of the route.
• 4:37
SPEAKER_00: You have the ocean on one side and the views toward the Bolsa Chica wetlands on the other.
• 4:41
SPEAKER_00: The Bolsa Chica portion of the paved trail is approximately 2.9 miles long.
• 4:46
SPEAKER_00: It's flat and shared by cyclists, walkers, runners, and people using skates or scooters.
• 4:51
SPEAKER_00: This is where the ride feels the least urban.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_00: There are beach parking areas, restrooms, and drinking fountains along the greater route, making Bolsa Chica a good place to take a break before reaching the busier sections closer to downtown.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_00: One important distinction the coastal bike path runs beside Bolsa Chica State Beach.
• 5:08
SPEAKER_00: It does not mean you can ride through the ecological reserve trails across Pacific Coast Highway.
• 5:13
SPEAKER_00: The wetlands are their own destination with separate rules.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_00: As you continue south, you'll reach Huntington Dog Beach between Seapoint Avenue and Golden West Street.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_00: Even if you don't have a dog, this is one of the more entertaining stops on the route.
• 5:24
SPEAKER_00: You'll usually see dogs running into the water, playing on the sand, and making much better use of the beach than the rest of us.
• 5:30
SPEAKER_00: This is also where the trail starts becoming noticeably busier.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_00: You'll have dogs, pedestrians, runners, children, and riders entering from parking areas, so slow down and pay attention to anyone crossing the path.
• 5:41
SPEAKER_00: Huntington Beach sets a maximum speed of 10 miles per hour on the bicycle and pedestrian path.
• 5:46
SPEAKER_00: Riders must slow to 5 miles per hour when pedestrians are present and walk their bikes when the yellow warning lights are flashing.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_00: The trail is not the place to test the top speed of your new e-bike.
• 5:55
SPEAKER_00: Nobody wants to become part of a slow motion collision involving a beach cruiser, a golden retriever, and someone carrying three ice coffees.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_00: The Huntington Beach Pier is the natural halfway point and the busiest stop on this route.
• 6:07
SPEAKER_00: As you approach downtown, expect more pedestrians, rental bikes, skateboards, and people stepping onto the trail without checking both directions.
• 6:14
SPEAKER_00: Slow down before you reach the pier.
• 6:15
SPEAKER_00: You're not allowed to ride a bicycle on the Huntington Beach Pier.
• 6:18
SPEAKER_00: You may walk or push your bike onto the pier, but you cannot ride it.
• 6:22
SPEAKER_00: This is a good place to lock your bike or take advantage of the free bike valet located at the strand.
• 6:27
SPEAKER_00: For from there you can walk to the pier, explore Main Street, or stop for food.
• 6:31
SPEAKER_00: You also find public facilities and places to refill water around the beach and downtown area.
• 6:36
SPEAKER_00: If you only want a shorter ride, this is the perfect turnaround point.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_00: Starting at Warner and turning around near the pier gives you the most scenic northern section without committing to the full route.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_00: For families and casual riders, this may be the better option.
• 6:50
SPEAKER_00: If you continue south from the pier, the trail enters Huntington State Beach.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_00: This section feels wider and generally less compressed than the downtown portion once you move away from the Pier Plaza.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_00: You'll pass volleyball courts, basketball courts, picnic areas, fire rings, and large stretches of open beach.
• 7:06
SPEAKER_00: Huntington State Beach also has restrooms and drinking fountains located between several parking areas along the trail.
• 7:12
SPEAKER_00: This is a good section for riders who want to maintain a steady pace without stopping every few minutes.
• 7:17
  SPEAKER_00: But it's still a shared path.
• 7:19
SPEAKER_00: Watch for people crossing between the parking lot and the sand, especially near restrooms and fire ring areas.
• 7:25
SPEAKER_00: The southern section can also feel windier, especially later in the day.
• 7:29
SPEAKER_00: A ride that feels effortless in one direction can become much less charming when you turn around and discover you had a tailwind the entire time.
• 7:36
SPEAKER_00: At the southern end of Huntington State Beach, the coastal route connects near the Santa Ana River Trail.
• 7:42
SPEAKER_00: This is where you have three choices.
• 7:43
SPEAKER_00: You can turn around and return north toward Warner Avenue, you can continue toward Newport Beach, or you can head inland along the Santa Ana River Trail.
• 7:52
SPEAKER_00: Now the Santa Ana River Trail extends inland through Orange County and provides connections toward Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Anaheim, and eventually your Belinda.
• 8:01
SPEAKER_00: It's also part of the larger planned OC Loop Trail Network.
• 8:04
SPEAKER_00: For this video, this is our official turnaround point.
• 8:07
SPEAKER_00: Continuing inland is a completely different ride and deserves its own episode rather than one casual sentence, followed by me disappearing toward Anaheim.
• 8:16
SPEAKER_00: How long this ride takes depends heavily on whether you are exercising or sightseeing.
• 8:20
SPEAKER_00: A rider maintaining a steady pace could complete the out and back route in around two hours of actual riding time.
• 8:26
SPEAKER_00: But if you stop at Sunset Beach, Dog Beach, the Pier, Downtown, and Huntington State Beach, plan for three to four hours.
• 8:33
SPEAKER_00: If you stop for a full meal or spend time walking the pier, this can easily become a half day activity.
• 8:39
SPEAKER_00: My recommendation is not to rush it.
• 8:41
SPEAKER_00: The entire point of this route is that you can experience several different parts of Huntington Beach without moving your car between every stop.
• 8:47
SPEAKER_00: Here's the full route one more time.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_00: For the optional northern extension, start at the Sunset Beach Greenbelt.
• 8:54
SPEAKER_00: For the easiest official start, begin at Warner Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway.
• 8:57
SPEAKER_00: The route, ride south through Bolsa Chica State Beach, continue past Huntington Dog Beach, slow down around the pier, and walk your bike if you go onto it.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_00: Continue through Huntington State Beach, then turn around near the Santa Ana River Trail connection.
• 9:11
SPEAKER_00: For a shorter ride, turn around at Dog Beach or the Pier.
• 9:15
SPEAKER_00: For the complete experience, continue all the way south before riding back.
• 9:20
SPEAKER_00: This is one of the best ways to explore Huntington Beach because it shows you more than downtown and the pier.
• 9:25
SPEAKER_00: You'll see the quiet northern beaches, the wetlands, Dog Beach, the busiest part of Surf City, and the wide open southern coastline in a steamboat ride.
• 9:34
SPEAKER_00: If you found this guide helpful, subscribe to Unlocking Huntington Beach for more local guides, community updates, and everything you need to know about living in or visiting Surf City.
• 9:42
SPEAKER_00: I'm Lean Stone, and I'll leave you with this like I do each and every week.
• 9:46
SPEAKER_00: Do good, Huntington Beach deserves it, and I'll see you on the next one.
