Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hey there and welcome to the podcast.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Emma Young, and this is, of course, She Said It Out Loud.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Today's episode is kindly sponsored by Drumroll Digga digga digga digga digg, a brand new place, and that place is Fourfold in Cable Beach.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: That's right, the place has been absolutely transformed.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: It used to be the Cable Beach General Store, but now it is Fourfold, and it is the place to be seen, it is the place to go for grab and go food, delicious coffee, and also they still have mini golf if you're wanting to go down there, take the kids down there for a bit of a hit.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Trust me on this one, they are open six days a week from six till six.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: So I might even see you down there.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, today's episode is a solo one, and I have just clicked over 40 episodes.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Today's is my 41st.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And so on that, it only makes sense that I'm going to take a couple of weeks break.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I know some of you might be listening going, what?
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I have done 40 episodes in a row.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: I haven't taken a break, and I've had the best fun.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: However, I do need to take a couple of weeks off because I have some amazing women lined up that I need to interview first.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And I am in charge of all the editing.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Not sure if you guys knew that, but these things take time.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And September is the last peak season month in Brome for weddings.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: So for all my new listeners out there, you might be thinking, why is Emma always talking about weddings?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Well, obviously, my alter ego is Emma the Celebrant, and I do do weddings.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So September, I have an incredible amount of weddings, and that's only because everybody's trying to get in.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: They've obviously booked me a year ago or months ago, because it's the last official peak season month, and not only that, it's before everything gets so incredibly hot.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: So on that, I do need to take a couple of weeks off just to have a break, just to relax.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna actually take some of my own advice and practice what I preach.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And not only that, I need to have the time to interview all these incredible women that I can't wait to introduce you to.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: So today's podcast, or today's episode, should I say, is going to be end of season one.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Yay, that's right.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: I just said it, end of season one.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna start back, I'm gonna start it with season two, because my OCD is going to want to have a new title up there that says season two of the podcast.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, enough of me waffling about that.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: So on today's episode, it's a solo one, and I want to talk to you because I have received a few DMs about my trip that I did last week in Sydney.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: For those of you that have been following on, you've obviously seen my sort of journey through wanting to branch out into doing events in the future, a lot more public speaking gigs, and it takes practice, it takes research, but it also takes investing in yourself to develop a certain skill.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Now, just to clarify, obviously a lot of the jobs that I do, I'm always constantly speaking.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: I'm speaking on the podcast, I'm having conversations with incredible women, I'm doing weddings, which is a highly stressful environment, but of course I've got a script that I have practiced, or I'm teaching adults on the peninsula, which is a whole other different language ball game in itself, or relief teaching, which, you know, I do that every now and then, and standing in front of a classroom is a lot different to standing in front of all my other jobs or a room full of women.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Correct me if I'm wrong for my listeners out there that do things similar, where you might be standing in front of a room full of women.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: It can be daunting, it can be a high pressure situation, it can also take knowing what you're gonna waffle on about and not going off on a tangent, but also just developing your skill of confidence, the way you need to be moving around the room, and also how you want to get your message across.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: So I've been working on a keynote presentation that's really based around this podcast.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And in the future, I'm wanting to run events, and so at the events, I will be obviously at some point, not all the events, but at some point I will be speaking and presenting my keynote speech.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: So I went to the one and only, Annalise McCarthy, last week on Wednesday, to spend a day in Sydney.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Yes, very extravagant, I'm well aware of that.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: However, I really wanted to learn from what I consider to be one of Australia's best professional public speaking coaches.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: I initially met Annalise, I'd followed her for a while on social media, and I had the opportunity to go and see her.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: I got a VIP ticket in March when she came to Perth on her nationwide tour.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: And to see her in person and to see the way that she speaks to women, the way that she includes women in such a big space, but not only that, the way that she speaks and talks about her history and how she got to where she is, I just was an absolute fangirl.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: And then with Jess Williamson, I know I've spoken about this on a couple of previous episodes, solo episodes, I should say, that she was the MC for Jess Williamson's event, the Million Dollar Personal Brand workshop in Brooklyn that I attended back in May.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And so seeing Annalise for the second time, like in the space of two months, and she was just incredibly on fire, I thought, you know what, I wonder if she does actual I know she obviously must do coaching, maybe one-on-one.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I'm I've seen her, obviously in the past, do groups and masterminds online.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: But anyway, I touched base with her straight after the Brooklyn event, asked if this was something she did.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: She said, yes, it certainly is, and that's how I managed to do the one-on-one with her.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: To say that thank, you know, I was very lucky that Broome has the direct flight to Sydney, first of all, that made it a little bit easier because that would have been a real pain in the bum having to go from Broom to Perth to Sydney.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: So I got the direct flight on the Tuesday, stayed overnight, did the intensive day with her all day on the Wednesday, and then flew back on the Thursday.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: To say that I learnt not only, you know, how what goes into running events, what needs to be taken into consideration, all the things that, you know, people might think of but might not, and let's just say there was lots of things that I hadn't even considered.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: We spoke about that, but then we went into for the rest of the half day.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: So the first half I should say was talking about events, and then the next part was obviously talking about what you need to do in regards to the keynote.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Now I'd been practicing this keynote since I booked it with her, so since May.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And it's been a work in progress.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: So I got to, I think it was draft 16, is the draft that I decided, you know what, this is the one I'm going to present to Annalise, and it was great.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Her feedback, I love feedback.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: I talk about this all the time.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: I'm not that type of person.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Like, don't be an arsehole if you're giving feedback for starters.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Needs to be constructive criticism.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: But not only that, it needs to have some sort of substance to it.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: So it's no good if you're wanting to give feedback to somebody, but then you don't actually give an example.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: But she was all over it.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: She spoke about my pacing, the I'm well aware that I do speak very fast.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Um, but letting the pauses land, letting the tone of voice either dip in or dip out, depending on whatever word that you're really wanting to emphasize.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: But one thing that I did take away from it, I mean, I took away a lot of things, but one thing that really stuck in my mind is I know that I waffle, I know that I can go off on tangents.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's been evident in quite a few of my solo episodes.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: But some of my greatest feedback that I've received from women is that's what they like.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: They don't want it to be polished, they don't want it to sound like I've, you know, spent hours and hours slogging on a laptop, you know, poring over every single different word that I can change to make it sound like more professional, but then of course, then that takes away from sounding less and less like me.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: So I took away from, you know, the bit that I'm talking about is actually being and embracing my storytelling.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: I'm a storyteller.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Yes, I like to call it waffle sometimes, but there are parts of my personality where I can actually go into a story and really set the tone, really set the scene.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: I just have to get better at picking out the details.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: I am a stickler for details.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: I will tell a story and I can go back because of my memory being as brilliant as what it is.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: I can go back and tell you a story that happened from 1998.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: I can tell you what song was playing on the radio, what the smell was in the air, you know, the weather, the temperature, ridiculous things like that.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: When you're telling something on stage, I don't need to go into that much detail.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: But I do want to be able to tell a story or describe a feeling without it not having some sort of presence or substance to it.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Does that make sense?
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, there you go.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Now that's another thing.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Does that make sense?
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: I say that all the time.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: I say it all the time.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Does that make sense?
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: It's like a go-to.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: It's one of my filler sentences, I guess you could say.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And throughout the day of hanging out with Annalise, I must have said it about six times, and every single time she looked at me and she was like, No, we're not saying, does that make sense?
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: I'm curious to know what are some of your filler words?
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Send me a DM on this.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: This this podcast is just gonna be all over the shop, by the way, this this episode.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: But yes, send me a DM, let me know what's some of your filler words.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to get better at saying um, and obviously with the podcast, the beauty of this is with me doing my own editing, I can take out all the ums, I can take out all the ahs and the clicks and the gaps where I just go off on tangents that make absolutely no sense most of the time.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I leave them in there.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: However, what are some of your filler words?
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: I'm very interested to know.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, moving on.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: So, yes, Annalise McCarthy, if you don't know her, go and suss out her page.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Trust me on this.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: I think that you will get something out of it.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And even if you're not into, you know, if you don't have any issues whatsoever in using your voice or wanting to learn, I think you will from her.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: She talks about using your voice quite often, and that can mean all sorts of things.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Using your voice in the workplace, using your voice at home, using your voice in your quiet moments.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: So the intensive that we did together, brilliant.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Loved every minute of it.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: And then afterwards, we had a VIP dinner together, which is just something that she does.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: And if anybody knows me, anything that says VIP, I'm all over it.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: It feels like you can get more of a closer connection to that person, but actually get to know them as a person.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: And that's what I keep banging on about is that lots of the women that I'm meeting, lots of the women that are sending me messages about the podcast, are really enjoying the variety of women who I am interviewing.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: So on that note, I want to ask those that are listening today.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: I know some of you are regular listeners, but if you're new, if you're a regular, it doesn't matter.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Send me a DM with anybody that you think, even if it's somebody Australia-wide, hey, I don't want to break the bank, probably not overseas.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: I've done some significant travel this year.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: However, if you've got somebody in Broom, if you've got somebody in WA, regional towns, if you've got somebody over East, let me know.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Obviously, the only rule is is that they need to be inspirational, which obviously that can be anybody really.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: They cannot be a bitch, okay?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: They can't be a bully.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Those two things, a bitch and a bully, no.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: I'm well aware too, by the way, that there will be people that I interview on the podcast that not everybody is going to get along with.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: I am well and truly aware of that.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: I have received a few messages from the last couple of episodes where I've had people, some people that I know and some complete randoms that I don't know, that have sent me messages saying, oh, I don't know if you know, but you know, not a lot of people might not resonate with that person.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Mmm, that's not what this podcast is about.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: This podcast is about me going out there, trying to find all sorts of different women from different cultures, different backgrounds, definitely different ages, because as much as I bang on about not liking Gen Z, they obviously have some wisdom, but also boomers, later years ladies, of course they have wisdom.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Gen X, Millennials, which are my favorites, of course.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Everybody has something to offer.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Like I said though, can't be a bitch, can't be a bully, because, you know, as this whole podcast originated from me being a bully and a bitch, and then me having to change my ways, I'm really trying to avoid those women that, you know, might have a bit of a reputation.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: And that's not to say that I don't think that they can change.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: It's just this is about positive, inspirational women that have a story to tell.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: So send them my way.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Send me names my way.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: This is how I get to pick out people.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Now, I've got a couple of questions here that I've written down that I'm going to answer, which I feel like some of you that are my regular listeners might actually be interested in what knowing what the answers are.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: So the first question here is it says, and I'm reading off this piece of paper, it says, How do you go about picking the women that you want to interview?
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: And that is a great question, and that's from Sammy in Queensland.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: And I don't actually know Sammy in Queensland, but she's just written Sammy and it's S-A-M-I.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: So thanks, Sammy.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: I actually just send a message.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: I send a message if they're a broom local or they're a broom person and I happen to just know them.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: I pretty much just go with, hey, would you like to be on the podcast?
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: It's as simple as that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: There have been a couple of women where their name keeps popping up, and so I will then send that person a text message or an Instagram message.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: That's usually my go-to, and I'll say, Hey, your name's come up several times.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: What are you thinking?
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Don't get me wrong, not everybody s says yes and agrees to the podcast, and that's totally fine.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: I really need that person to feel comfortable.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: However, I have had a pretty good success rate, I'm not gonna lie, where women have gone, oh my god, yes, that would be amazing.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: And they've come away enjoying themselves and really liking, you know, the whole situation.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: So that's that's the aim of the game.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: So yes, pretty much that's how I that's how I get to work out who I'm gonna interview.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Anybody that's over East, that I have had no clue who they are, I've either used some contacts and ask them who they think I should interview, or same thing, send an Instagram message.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Why not?
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: The only thing that they can say to me is no, and I'm not gonna have my feelings hurt.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: So if there are people out there that have hesitated, they've seen my text, and then they get back to me within a week, sometimes I'm a little bit cautious because I think, oh, I don't want them to feel like I'm twisting their arm.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: However, most of the time I've been pretty lucky.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Question two here is asking me, how come I haven't interviewed teenagers?
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: So I guess for women that's going to be the 18 and the 19-year-olds.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, that's an interesting question.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: So I could potentially find some 18 and 19-year-olds.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: I probably just haven't decided to include any as of yet because I've been too busy trying to find other women, I guess, and women that are either closer to my age.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Um, the 18, 19 year age bracket is like the age bracket of my daughter, my and I guess you could say my youngest daughter who's 17, very close.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: I definitely wouldn't interview any women that are under 18, they have to be obviously an adult, but that's a really good question.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: And that one is just it says X uh from SA, so that's interesting.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: They obviously didn't want to leave their name, but that's okay.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Um, but yes, good to know I could potentially find a younger uh age bracket and see what they've got to say.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Wise words there.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Um question three.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Now I'm not sure about this one.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: Question three, I saw this, I screenshot it, so it's on my other phone here, and it says, Would you ever consider doing a special he said it out loud?
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not gonna lie, I have been toying with this.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: I've had a couple of people only in the last couple of episodes, I think it's my regular people that have been listening to this, where they have said, you know what would be really cool if you did a couple of random he said it out louds, you know, as in to just get a male's point of view.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: At this moment, it's a definite, it's definitely not a no.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's not gonna be no, no way, never gonna happen.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: However, the podcast is called She Said It Out Loud.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: That's not to say though that, you know, in the future I might do a couple of randoms like special this week where it's he said it out loud.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: I think that could actually be quite interesting, you know, hearing something from a male's point of view.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: I think that that would be great.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: And look, let's just say watch this space.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: I think it could be potentially be something that I look into doing in the future.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Right now, though, it's not hugely on my radar, but if you've got people that you think are inspirational men that I could maybe throw in there once a month or once every two months, send them my way, as in the names, not the men themselves.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: My husband probably won't like that.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: But send the names my way and I'll have a look.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, I've already got a list that I think would be really cool to interview these guys.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: However, it's just been on my like put it to the side and have a think about it for another day kind of list.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Anyway, that's it for the three questions.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: I do have other questions, but I think I'm gonna save them for another episode.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: If you've listened to anything today that you've gone, wow Emma, that sounds amazing.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: You want to comment, sure.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: You know me, love feedback.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: If there are some of you that are like, dear God Emma, what we were even talking about, tell me more about Annalise, send me a message and I'm happy to talk more on that.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: However, for now, I'm gonna sign out and I just want to say thank you to each and every one of you that have downloaded the episodes, shared them with your friends, sent me DMs.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: You know how much I love those.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Again, I have had some women ask me how come I haven't posted their DMs.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be straight with you.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: If there's lots of spelling mistakes, I do not post spelling mistakes.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Look, that's the teacher in me, okay?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Other than that, most of the time I do try to pick out really positive ones that I think are gonna make the guest feel not only loved, but also like, wow, that's really cool.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm really happy that somebody spent or took the time to write me some lovely kind words.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: That's the whole point.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: So, look, thanks again.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: I appreciate you.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: I know that there are so many podcasts out there that you could be listening to.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: However, I do want to say I'm having the best fun, and I'm gonna continue to keep trying to find amazing inspirational women to interview, to have a chat with, to pick their brains, to get some stories, to get some more juice, all those things, and keep sending them your way.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: So thank you.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: And I will be back in a couple of weeks' time.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: On that note, have a fabulous week.
