- 0:00Speaker 1: If you ever want to know why we always keep
- 0:02Speaker 1: our phones close, it's because the news is actively happening
- 0:05Speaker 1: while we're on the air, including two minutes ago where
- 0:08Speaker 1: President Trump put a post on truth social saying that
- 0:10Speaker 1: he was actually canceling signing that big bipartisan housing bill
- 0:14Speaker 1: that just passed again bipartisan through Congress.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Trump was supposed to.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Sign it today. Now he's saying he is canceling it
- 0:21Speaker 1: until such time as we pass the Save America Act.
- 0:24Speaker 1: He says he considers that bill to be a national emergency.
- 0:28Speaker 1: This is once again, as we were talking about potential
- 0:31Speaker 1: own goals from the President to Republicans in Congress. Any
- 0:35Speaker 1: of these Republicans planned to run on this bill trying
- 0:38Speaker 1: to tackle affordability issues ahead of the midterms. Of course
- 0:41Speaker 1: Democrats were going to do the same thing. It all
- 0:44Speaker 1: now comes, of course, as President Trump is still lashing
- 0:46Speaker 1: out on truth social at other lawmakers for passing a
- 0:49Speaker 1: different resolution, this one would have blocked him from resuming
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Iran war. He wrote on truth social that he
- 0:54Speaker 1: has quote Iran on the ropes and that the Senate
- 0:57Speaker 1: just made his job more difficult. Republican senators broke ranks
- 1:01Speaker 1: to vote for that resolution yesterday. It passed the House
- 1:04Speaker 1: earlier this month. A lot for us to get back
- 1:06Speaker 1: to with the group chat as we sort of unpack
- 1:09Speaker 1: all of these things at once. Right there was supposed
- 1:12Speaker 1: to be a tough lunch abby as well as a
- 1:15Speaker 1: bill signing, as well as negotiating around a reality check
- 1:18Speaker 1: on the Save America Act. And now the President is
- 1:22Speaker 1: dashing Republican hopes of having a new bill on affordability
- 1:26Speaker 1: to run on and also putting them again in a
- 1:28Speaker 1: position where they're not going to pass this bill.
- 1:30Speaker 3: If you are a traditional normal president, your entire job
- 1:34Speaker 3: at this moment in time is to get those Republican
- 1:36Speaker 3: senators re elected.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And yet here on Earth.
- 1:38Speaker 3: B there seems to be the only thing more fun
- 1:41Speaker 3: than tormenting Democrats right now seems to be tormenting Senate Republicans,
- 1:45Speaker 3: and he is making their lives actively harder the Save Act.
- 1:48Speaker 3: He was using his leverage with the John Cornyan endorsement
- 1:51Speaker 3: during the Senate race. That race is over. He has
- 1:53Speaker 3: metaphorically already shot the hostage on this situation, and so
- 1:57Speaker 3: you have just this. It just seems to be this
- 2:02Speaker 3: is going to land on him in six months if
- 2:03Speaker 3: he loses the Senate because he's not going to be
- 2:05Speaker 3: able to get confirmations through, and this is all going
- 2:07Speaker 3: to come to a head. We'll see if it flips.
- 2:09Speaker 1: We'll see if it flipp Also, though, think about the
- 2:12Speaker 1: fact that Democrats actually feel that they could and I
- 2:15Speaker 1: say could because it's a long shot still to flip
- 2:17Speaker 1: the Senate, but they were absolutely freaked. If you go
- 2:21Speaker 1: back a year ago looking at this map and now
- 2:23Speaker 1: the entire atmospheric seem to have changed, and they feel
- 2:26Speaker 1: they have the wind at their back. I think this
- 2:27Speaker 1: is just another example of how Trump further complicates things.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Absolutely freakd is exactly right. I mean, one of the
- 2:32Speaker 4: most interesting dynamics of his entire second term has been
- 2:35Speaker 4: the vulnerability that Trump has opened up for himself is
- 2:38Speaker 4: on this populace stuff. When he won, one of the
- 2:41Speaker 4: ideas was this is a new kind of Republican is
- 2:44Speaker 4: going to come in here and do these populous things
- 2:46Speaker 4: that are very exciting to a lot of voters. We
- 2:48Speaker 4: think about those no taxes on tips in that big
- 2:50Speaker 4: ability put out there that a lot of Republicans did
- 2:53Speaker 4: not like that kind of thing. This housing bill is
- 2:55Speaker 4: one of those things. Where had we pushed through a
- 2:57Speaker 4: lot of people who are like, I don't know if
- 2:58Speaker 4: I like this. The banks aren't happy with this, the
- 3:00Speaker 4: developers don't love this. Should we do this? And this
- 3:03Speaker 4: was supposed to be kind of like the change he
- 3:05Speaker 4: was supposed to bring the Republican Party that would create
- 3:08Speaker 4: this decades long ascension of it. And this is the
- 3:12Speaker 4: thing that they keep stumbling and falling flat on their
- 3:14Speaker 4: face with. And you have another moment today where all
- 3:18Speaker 4: that populism, all that conversion about houses, We're going to
- 3:20Speaker 4: come make your houses cheaper. We're not going to do
- 3:22Speaker 4: that because you have to pass a very esoteric and
- 3:24Speaker 4: confusing bill about elections that your local election person, your
- 3:28Speaker 4: local state leader does not want us to pass.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's a very.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Very confusing, confusing move.
- 3:34Speaker 1: And I also think that it's important for us to
- 3:36Speaker 1: remind that it's not like for the same of America Act.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Every single Republican in the Senate is sitting there like, yes,
- 3:41Speaker 1: we want to pass this. There is concern within the caucus. Yes,
- 3:45Speaker 1: the majority of them might want it, but not in
- 3:47Speaker 1: the numbers that they need. And so when you consider
- 3:50Speaker 1: the fact that the President is going to this lunch
- 3:52Speaker 1: in the immediate aftermath of this tweet. But then also
- 3:55Speaker 1: the War Powers Resolution passing.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I mean, what does it say He's got very little
- 4:01Speaker 2: capital at this moment on any of these issues. The
- 4:05Speaker 2: Housing bill would seem to be, like you said, one
- 4:07Speaker 2: of the Trump populist wins, also something that passed with
- 4:10Speaker 2: bipartisan support. The abundance. Democrats like it, Progressives like it.
- 4:14Speaker 2: You know, you can make a case that it's going
- 4:16Speaker 2: to have long term positive effects that you know, Republicans
- 4:20Speaker 2: can brag about later on as a you know, Trump
- 4:22Speaker 2: era accomplishment. You know, Foon keeps saying Save Act is
- 4:26Speaker 2: not happening. And you know, though the War Powers Resolution
- 4:31Speaker 2: was non binding, it's still showing you that support for
- 4:34Speaker 2: the war is not there, that if it ever actually
- 4:38Speaker 2: went to a you know, a full binding vote, that
- 4:42Speaker 2: he wouldn't get it. And so now he's going into
- 4:44Speaker 2: this room saying this one win, forget that, and these
- 4:48Speaker 2: other things that I probably won't win. I'm going to
- 4:50Speaker 2: stamp my feet until you come to my side. I
- 4:53Speaker 2: don't see it happening.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Let's say on the War Powers piece for a moment,
- 4:56Speaker 1: because we have a great viewer question from Melissa s
- 4:58Speaker 1: in Virginia. She says, why is the War Powers resolution
- 5:02Speaker 1: voted on by the Senate only symbolic? And if it's
- 5:04Speaker 1: only symbolic, where are the checks and balances?
- 5:07Speaker 3: The checks and the balances come in appropriations the government spending,
- 5:10Speaker 3: which Congress is technically supposed to control. And that is
- 5:13Speaker 3: why Elon Musk's doge movement was so terrifying to the Congress.
- 5:17Speaker 3: And so I think the question is whether Republicans are
- 5:19Speaker 3: going to get to a point where they start cutting
- 5:22Speaker 3: off funding for President the president's initiatives. And I don't
- 5:25Speaker 3: know if we'll get to that point, but boy, they
- 5:26Speaker 3: seem frustrated.
- 5:27Speaker 1: They seem frustrated. And the other reason why this is
- 5:29Speaker 1: largely symbolic is that if it were to become a law,
- 5:31Speaker 1: Trump would have to sign it. He is not signing this.
- 5:34Speaker 1: They don't have a veto proof majority, and so that
- 5:37Speaker 1: would leave it there. But then also I'm pretty sure
- 5:38Speaker 1: they did this as a concurrent resolution, and so it's
- 5:41Speaker 1: through a different procedural mechanism on Capitol Hill. But nevertheless,
- 5:44Speaker 1: the message I think is loud at a moment where
- 5:47Speaker 1: if the check comes on appropriation, this is a Congress
- 5:50Speaker 1: that has not been briefed in a way that they appreciate.
- 5:53Speaker 1: They don't feel they're getting transparency from the administration. They
- 5:55Speaker 1: also were not able to vote to begin the Iran war,
- 5:59Speaker 1: and yet here they are potentially on the hook to
- 6:01Speaker 1: vote for eighty billion dollars in extra spending to help
- 6:04Speaker 1: replenish munition stockpiles and other things because of actions in Iran.
- 6:09Speaker 1: How do you think that lands.
- 6:10Speaker 4: I don't think it lands very well so far, it hasn't.
- 6:12Speaker 4: But I'm saying, you know, the big challenge here for Trump,
- 6:14Speaker 4: and he's in the Senates world now, like this is
- 6:16Speaker 4: different than the House. From the House, you can sort
- 6:17Speaker 4: of twist arms and make these people do things.
- 6:19Speaker 2: In the Senate.
- 6:20Speaker 4: A lot of this stuff's going on right now. It's
- 6:21Speaker 4: like the filibuster. Trump wants to get rid of it.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Senators can just say no, we're not doing that. Like
- 6:26Speaker 4: he has no real power to make that happen. So
- 6:29Speaker 4: the more he sort of gets engaged with this esoteric
- 6:31Speaker 4: Senate stuff, it's very like, you know, senators doing senator stuff.
- 6:35Speaker 4: This is their happy place. They don't have to fight
- 6:37Speaker 4: him on Trump's stuff. They don't have to fight him
- 6:39Speaker 4: on maga politics. He can say no, no, these are our rules.
- 6:42Speaker 4: We're not going to change them. Sorry, And they can
- 6:45Speaker 4: just do that. And that's what Thune keeps saying, right,
- 6:47Speaker 4: it's not even a question of is to say that
- 6:49Speaker 4: act a good idea or a bad idea. He's just saying,
- 6:50Speaker 4: I can't blow up the filibuster. I don't have the votes.
- 6:53Speaker 4: This is an easy place for them to fight him
- 6:55Speaker 4: on because it's in.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Their house, it is on their own turf, and yet
- 7:00Speaker 1: we have yet to see Republicans do any kind of major,
- 7:05Speaker 1: tangible pushback from the hill. Maybe this is the point,
- 7:08Speaker 1: because the primaries are largely over, because November is closer
- 7:12Speaker 1: than it is in the future mirror. Maybe this is
- 7:14Speaker 1: the moment, but we have not seen it yet. We're
- 7:17Speaker 1: going to wait to see what that lunch brings, and
- 7:19Speaker 1: of course we'll keep our phones close just in case.
