- 0:00Welcome to Healthy Happy Wise Wealthy, the podcast where we talk about how to make
- 0:00our lives happier, wiser and wealthier, but first, it all begins with our health. I'm
- 0:00your host, Mary Meyer. I gave a speech at Reno Startup Week and we are
- 0:00going to use that for this week's podcast. It's all about tips and tricks from
- 0:00the acting world and on-camera life. Things you can do as a business person and
- 0:00euntrepreneur to have more poise and more confidence when you're doing on camera interviews, when
- 0:00you're on camera for your socials, when you're on sales calls, or when you're doing
- 0:00a presentation in front of a room full of people. I hope this helps. I
- 0:00am about to talk about things we can do to help with jitters on sales
- 0:02calls, giving speeches, presentations or when we're in front
- 0:06of the camera, like right now. Thanks for coming
- 0:10today as I'm Mary Meyer,
- 0:14as you can see from right here and my contact information
- 0:18is right there. So I have some really easy things
- 0:22that I think will help everyone. In fact,
- 0:26there's only four things that I think anyone would need
- 0:30to know to get started, to feel more confident. And because
- 0:34those things are so easy, I want to tell
- 0:38you guys a little bit about myself so that you understand
- 0:41that I'm not just saying things from nowhere, but I've had some
- 0:46experience with it, which is why. Okay, so we're going
- 0:50to do the first thing on your index card I'm going to have you write
- 0:54down one side. I'm going to have you write down something else later. But on
- 0:56the first side I'm going to have you spell really difficult words and I
- 1:00didn't make a slide for it, so that's my bad.
- 1:03But one is unconscious
- 1:07incompetent. There will be four things, so make room for four.
- 1:11So hi Jill, come on up here by Laura.
- 1:15The first one, unconscious incompetent. An unconscious
- 1:19incompetent is someone just think about a five year old playing
- 1:22an instrument. They are going to be excited
- 1:27and you are not, right? So think about it like that.
- 1:30Unconscious incompetent. These are different stages of learning we go through. The
- 1:34second is conscious. Number two, spell these however
- 1:38you want to. Conscious incompetent.
- 1:41So this would be like maybe an 8 year old playing an instrument
- 1:45and now they know they're not very good, although they're better.
- 1:49Right? So that's that one. Number
- 1:53three. You guys come on in. We're just getting started. On every chair is an
- 1:56index card and grab a chair with an index card if you can. There's
- 2:00some chairs up here. We're writing down four stages
- 2:04of learning as we practice. So just. Yeah, come on in.
- 2:08No worries, we're just getting started. Anxiety. I know.
- 2:12We're going to talk about it all. So
- 2:16for those who came in, number one, if you guys write these down, there's going
- 2:18to be four of them. Unconscious, incompetent, year old, playing an instrument.
- 2:22I mean for the love of God. Right? Number two, a conscious
- 2:26incompetent. They're a little older, they know they're not very good. So even though they're
- 2:29better, they know they're not good. The third one is a conscious
- 2:33competent. So that's at the point where you're like, you
- 2:37know, you're not been good but you've been practicing and now
- 2:41you know you're getting better, you know you're better. Maybe it's a 15 year
- 2:45old who's been taking piano lessons for 10 years, right? The
- 2:48next stage. Can you guys guess what it is or does anyone know?
- 2:53Unconsciously competent. So I know this is a thing that a lot of people know
- 2:57these things. So the unconsciously competent, right? Unconsciously competent
- 3:01means that you're playing. If you're a piano,
- 3:05you're playing 10 pages of Opus
- 3:0812 by Bach, whatever it is, and you
- 3:12don't know what notes you're playing, but your fingers know, right?
- 3:16So that's an unconscious competent. In my
- 3:19opinion, we go through these things where we will get better at something.
- 3:23The more we practice, the better we'll be at it, right?
- 3:27But we can always go from unconscious competent where we're
- 3:31doing something all the time. Like I actually this is playing piano is an example
- 3:34of me, right? So like I was the one who could play 15
- 3:38pages memorized. The pages aren't in front of me, it's just all memorized,
- 3:42Right. I cannot go back right now and do it because you do go
- 3:45backwards in different things depending on how often you practice.
- 3:50Also, I do think if you're going to teach people, you have to go back
- 3:54to the stage of conscious competent. You have to remember why you're
- 3:57good at it. So I'm going to tell you guys a couple
- 4:01things that I've done and I do not like going into myself. But the only
- 4:05reason I am doing this is so you can go, she's done some things.
- 4:08So if she says these four things are going to help me, you're like, okay,
- 4:12these four things sound simple, but they're going to work. So
- 4:16has anyone heard of 10,000 hours to competency?
- 4:20Yeah. So a couple things I've done on my
- 4:2410,000 hours to competency is one is as an actor.
- 4:28So the thing that I have acting. Has anyone done on stage?
- 4:31On. Not on stage, but on camera. On camera, acting.
- 4:35Okay, so it's a lesson less common here. Came from
- 4:39Atlanta, was a little more common. But to do this,
- 4:42I'm going to play a clip because it's a little bit more interesting to play
- 4:46the clip than it is to tell you about it. So as you guys watch
- 4:50this clip, it was just a clip I did in a TV show called Dead
- 4:52Silent a while ago. Maybe not my best clip, but it's a
- 4:56clip. So as you, as you look at the camera. You're going to see, like,
- 5:00the first one is what we call a
- 5:04wide shot. So you walk into the room, you only see
- 5:07two people. What I see as an actor is 15 people,
- 5:11cameras and lights. Does that make sense? So as you go through it, then you'll
- 5:15see one where the camera's, like, right here in my face, like, right here.
- 5:19So obviously I can't look at the camera. I have to look at
- 5:23who I'm talking to. Those are lines that are memorized.
- 5:27But it's not just having the lines memorized. It's forgetting who I am.
- 5:31Right. And being the person that's on camera. And then there's other angles of it,
- 5:35too. So I'm just gonna play it. It's a minute and a half, and then
- 5:38we'll kind of talk about how this applies to what we're doing
- 5:42here today. And how do I play it? Like that.
- 5:46Oh, okay. There we go. Yes, ma', am,
- 5:50how can I help you? I'm Sheila
- 5:54Davis. I was told you're the one
- 5:58investigating the case with the two girls.
- 6:01That's right. You have some information for me?
- 6:08Well, I mean, I don't even know how to say this.
- 6:13My son, Matthew Vaca,
- 6:18I've been watching his kids for a
- 6:21couple days and. But we've not seen him.
- 6:26So you think he's in some sort of trouble? He
- 6:30just called me a little while ago and he.
- 6:34He said, mom,
- 6:38I've done something really bad and you're never gonna forgive me.
- 6:45What do you think he meant?
- 6:50I. I know
- 6:55Matthew is the one who did this to these girls.
- 7:03What a good mom, right? . This is a real story, by the way.
- 7:08Anyway, next we're gonna go. Next. Thank you, thank you,
- 7:12thank you. See, it's more fun to show than tell, right?
- 7:16So I started on camera acting. I was 42
- 7:19when I started. So I did what we all have to do when
- 7:23we're going to do sales calls, presentations, be on camera,
- 7:2910,000 hours, lots and lots and lots and lots of practice, right?
- 7:32So practice is going to be one of the things we talk about, but there's
- 7:36also a few simple things that is going to make you walk out of here
- 7:38and go, that was really simple. So, second one, and this has a lot to
- 7:42do with just speaking on the spot, right? Because when you're doing whatever
- 7:45you're doing, presentation, things are going to go wrong. You don't know the right button
- 7:49to push. You know what I'm saying? This is going to freeze.
- 7:53It's going to be a different audience than who you thought it was going to
- 7:56be. Who knows, right? You think you're going to
- 7:59talk to someone who's unfriendly and then they're friendly. You think you're going to
- 8:03talk to someone who's friendly and then they're unfriendly. You don't know. Right. You don't
- 8:06know what you're up against. So the other thing that you have to do,
- 8:09besides knowing kind of the amount, what you're going to say,
- 8:13I'm assuming everyone knows what they're going to say, right. Is to be flexible and
- 8:17just being able to pivot. So another 10,000
- 8:21hours I did was three. These are three different
- 8:24things. Music City Corner was in Nashville, so that was. I was really just
- 8:28starting out, but I hosted a show that was a cable
- 8:32show for a couple seasons. And there's me right there,
- 8:36All the Laughs, where I met Erika. And then Healthy Happy Wise Wealthy That's our
- 8:40stand-in logo. But that's our podcast we're doing right now. So I'm going to
- 8:44show you. This is simply another minute of. So as soon as
- 8:48you come out of Roll Call theater, you're going to take a right and that's
- 8:51going to take us to our nook. Let's go.
- 8:56We might talk, chill, watch some movies, have a drink. And we're going to be
- 9:00hanging right here in this space. Join us on October 6th,
- 9:047th and 8th for All the Laughs Festival. Make sure that you follow us
- 9:07on the socials and go ahead and leave a comment about anything that you'd like
- 9:11to see happen. Also, bring a friend. So you're
- 9:15sick in bed. What you ought to be doing if you're sick in bed.
- 9:18Watch Music City Corner. What else can you do, right? Yeah. Get some good swag.
- 9:22Oh, you're on vacation. You need a little bit. Something to keep the
- 9:26sun out of your eyes. And you got all that time. You should be watching
- 9:28Music City Corner. So it's just there for you. And this. Oh,
- 9:34this one I'm a bit confused about, Bob. It
- 9:37is temporary. We'll be
- 9:41right back. Right. And Oprah, I launched a little
- 9:45game show called Wheel of Fortune with the King Brothers
- 9:49and with Merv Griffin. When I started
- 9:52working for those guys, there were basically nine people in the company
- 9:57and. And then we launched Jeopardy.
- 10:00A couple years later. When you see Keith Urban, ask him if he
- 10:04would go ahead and sing that for you. the next time you share a stage
- 10:07at a show? Or better yet, direct him to this clip. There you go. Why
- 10:10just butcher Your eighth. Well, thank you, Kendal, for being on our show. And
- 10:14if you guys want to watch Kendal live, she's at Piranhas on Third Avenue
- 10:17in Nashville. Right. Every other Tuesday. Yeah. Two Wednesdays a
- 10:21month until August. Yeah. So that last clip I had in
- 10:25there, because like, you kind of see it's. It's a conversation, right? So you kind
- 10:29of know what you're gonna say when you're. When you're up doing a presentation, you're
- 10:32doing sales calls, you know what you're gonna say, but you pivot because you're doing
- 10:34what? Listening. You guys
- 10:38are so. You guys are so smart. That's the only videos. That's it.
- 10:41Okay, sales. My 10,000 hours of sales experience that I had before
- 10:45I left college. Okay, here we go. So I do think very
- 10:49few people connect anything that would be on camera.
- 10:53You guys, come on in, take a seat. Very few people
- 10:57would connect anything that's on camera also with sales. But I do think it's
- 11:00very much similar sales, very similar skill set.
- 11:04So this one in particular, this is the only one I have right now. I
- 11:07work with KOLO TV doing sales and marketing.
- 11:10So I help people, whoever is a business, create a fun
- 11:14commercial and where they're going to be on camera. Right.
- 11:18So I do that. But I. And that's also sales, of course. And then
- 11:22also I've had different experiences doing different type of sales. This one was the most
- 11:25challenging because it was door-to-door sales for four summers in
- 11:29college. There are books on here. That's how long ago it was.
- 11:33That's how long ago it was. So we would start at 8 o' clock in
- 11:37the morning and we would work till about 9:30 at night. We'd have a little
- 11:40bit of food with us. And you know what we.
- 11:44Can you imagine what we had when we were knocking on a door? What? Did
- 11:47we know anyone.
- 11:51There was a house. Yeah. Were they even home? You didn't know that
- 11:55I said this. I did the prompt the wrong way. So what would we have
- 11:58known before we knocked on the door about what we're doing?
- 12:03Yeah, Scripts. Sales scripts. See, I'm just asking the question wrong. You guys know
- 12:07what I was saying, right? So we have sales scripts memorized. Right.
- 12:11So you have different scripts for different things that you're selling. Has anyone done
- 12:15sales where you have a script? Okay,
- 12:20a few. Okay. Yeah. And you also have, you know,
- 12:23I knock on the door, turn around, stand to the side
- 12:28so I'm not intimidating, act like I'm just having fun, just
- 12:31doing nothing. Like this because, you know, nothing's going on here. So
- 12:35they'll open the door, which they do, and then you
- 12:39have to turn around and introduce yourself. Right. Hey, I'm Mary. I'm just
- 12:43talking to some neighbors around. Oh, my gosh. I still haven't memorized. That's insane. Just
- 12:47talked to some neighbors around here and dropped some names so
- 12:51and so down the street and so and so. Just got some stuff and, you
- 12:54know, here I am. I don't have it completely memorized, but
- 12:58they do not even do this anymore. The Southwestern Company.. They do not do this
- 13:01anymore because it's. It's a different world than it was in
- 13:041992, right, when we did this. But
- 13:0830 calls a day, 10. You try to get 10 inside the
- 13:12house a day from that, in four summers,
- 13:16I probably made 8,000 sales. I've lost track, right? So it was enough to pay
- 13:19for college in a car. So that's all that mattered. But I do
- 13:23have. I'm showing you guys this. So when I tell you the easy stuff, you'll
- 13:26be like, oh, wow. So she has done some stuff. So now she's
- 13:30going to tell us easy stuff. Grab a seat if you'd like.
- 13:34There's some. There's one here. Up here. All right, moving
- 13:38on. Oh, wrong button.
- 13:42Oh, that did not. That slide did not show up. Right. But these
- 13:46are my kids. So just in case you're like,
- 13:50wow, I'm not, you know, I'm more about people.
- 13:54I'm not like you. I have issues. I'm a little
- 13:57nervous. I'm not as adept. I've not had this experience.
- 14:03I just want to say this because I come from a very human place, right?
- 14:07So this. We adopted four kids. It started a non profit
- 14:12called Both Hands. Raising
- 14:15children who are teenagers who were not yours for a long time does teach you
- 14:19a lot of things about humanity. So as we're
- 14:23doing everything, when we're doing presentations, when we're doing sales calls,
- 14:27whatever we're doing in front of people, we just have to remember. Of course. And
- 14:31the only reason we would forget probably is we're nervous, right? That
- 14:35we're talking to humans and have a humanity thing.
- 14:38Oh, my gosh. We're on to the lessons. That was it. That was about me.
- 14:41Okay. All right, you ready?
- 14:46This is one is too easy going to assume when
- 14:49you are ready to give. Let's say you're giving a presentation, right? You're giving a
- 14:53presentation. Maybe like I'm giving it right now. I'm going to assume you know, your
- 14:56stuff. You were asked to speak because you know something that
- 15:00is valuable for people to hear, that's important for people to hear. You know your
- 15:03stuff, right? So what are you going to do? Go ahead and have a
- 15:07seat. Come on in. Is you're going to write it,
- 15:11right? You're going to write down what you're going to say. Maybe you're going to
- 15:13make some slides. I'm not covering any of that. I'm just assuming you already know
- 15:16what to do do with that. What I'm going to ask you to do.
- 15:20And we're going to practice this later. I'm going to give you so much time
- 15:23to be anxious about this right now because we're not going to do it yet.
- 15:27Is the number one thing I want you to do is
- 15:30after you have it written. This is the most important
- 15:34thing. This is why I did this lead up. So you guys would think I
- 15:37would know what I'm talking about. I do. Is that practice it in funny
- 15:40voices or dance.
- 15:45No one would listen to me if I hadn't showed those slides. Right?
- 15:49This is why. Because we're going to be anxious, right? If we're doing something, we're
- 15:53going to have that natural, you know, and then you're tense,
- 15:57you lose some of your personality a little bit. Especially
- 16:00I do see this, you know, I work, like I said, for KOLO 8 people
- 16:04will come in for interviews and their personality will go away because they're
- 16:07anxious. They're doing a live interview. And also you walk in and there's all these
- 16:11cameras and lights and that's very intimidating because it's not normal, right? It's not a
- 16:14normal situation unless you're a newscaster. Right?
- 16:18So what helps with that? And I worked with the. And
- 16:22this has nothing to do with your intelligence. It has nothing to do so much
- 16:26with your ability to prepare. It has nothing to do with you knowing your
- 16:29stuff. And one of the things I did work with a client with
- 16:33this once who is doing some live interviews and she
- 16:37had lots of experience of public speaking and she had.
- 16:41She's probably one of the most well educated people I've ever met in my
- 16:44life and has a platform that people need to hear. She was so anxious, she
- 16:48was shaking. So we went into a room and I'm like,
- 16:52I'm just like. I'm just gonna like look at this slide and I'm gonna be
- 16:55like, you know, I'm assuming you know your topic, you know,
- 16:59and when you have something written, just practice it in funny voices. Or maybe
- 17:03you can dance a Little bit, right? So don't do this in public like I
- 17:06just did, because then you'll look stupid or do it. I will make you do
- 17:10this later. Do this at home. Because here's what happens. As soon as you start
- 17:13laughing, you can't, like, messes with
- 17:17your brain. And now you can't be as anxious. So
- 17:21later on, right now we're going to do this and I'm going to make you
- 17:25guys sing it a little bit, right? Like
- 17:29somewhere over the rainbow. I'm assuming you know
- 17:32your topic. And when you have something written, pract.
- 17:36Sit in funny voices and dance by yourself
- 17:40in the bathroom. And after a while, like, it will. You will not.
- 17:44You're going to lose. It's going to be. You're going to forget that you're nervous
- 17:47if you do it like that.
- 17:52This is why I showed the videos. You're like, I don't even know. But she
- 17:55said she has a lot of experience, so I guess I got to listen. I
- 17:58can tell you that's it. If that's the only thing you get from today,
- 18:03by next year, this time you do it, you're gonna be like, I feel so
- 18:05confident. I don't even know why. It's so simple. It's so
- 18:09simple. Number two, this is
- 18:13also. I told you guys, it's so simple. Check your posture..
- 18:17Check your posture. Check your look. Always. You know, obviously
- 18:20you're going to the bathroom. Make sure. Especially if you're gonna be on camera. Check
- 18:23your hair and make sure you don't have anything in your teeth. Do all the
- 18:26stuff you do. Check your clothes, make sure your zipper, zip. That
- 18:30kind of thing. All the obvious things. You're about to give your pitch. This is
- 18:33when you're the most nervous. This is what if
- 18:37you guys just look at me for a second if I'm doing this when I'm
- 18:40talking. So this is what I really think is going to be the
- 18:44most. If I'm doing this, what does that say? Anyone?
- 18:51I don't look very confident, right? What about
- 18:55now? You guys look at it.
- 18:59This is the simplest thing you will ever hear, and it's the most profound.
- 19:03Check your posture
- 19:10should do it again. It's such a
- 19:14fast point. I mean, do you see when I'm so always. I mean, shoulder
- 19:18blades together. I'm telling you what. And this is what I. I use this with
- 19:21a client. I'm like, shoulder blades together. You're slouching,
- 19:25you don't look. It's just your posture. It can also be
- 19:28hard if you've been through something really difficult lately
- 19:32that hurt. Your confidence was just very
- 19:36challenging in general, in life, and you feel like, I don't know if
- 19:40I want to put myself out there again. I don't feel confident.
- 19:44I'm anxious for reasons that maybe have nothing to do with your job. I
- 19:48am telling you, shoulder blades together. What did I just say?
- 19:51Shoulder blades together. This is so simple, right?
- 19:593. Is it about you?
- 20:06I mean, when we're anxious, it feels like it's all about us, right?
- 20:09So I don't need to give this presentation because I already know this stuff,
- 20:14right? So when you're giving a presentation now, sales presentation, you need
- 20:17to make a sale, right? If you're giving a presentation, maybe you're trying to get
- 20:20business. So that's usually what we're doing, is we're trying to get business. So, yes,
- 20:23we need business. It might be that funds are low and you really
- 20:27need business. So there's always that in life, the extra thing where there's
- 20:31more pressure, right? So as much as possible.
- 20:34And this is where maybe some breathing techniques come in,
- 20:38where you just, like, go internal. You pay attention to your
- 20:42breathing, but at the end of the day, it's not
- 20:46about you. You know, this stuff,
- 20:50your focus is on who you're talking to,
- 20:55right? Which leads into the next one.
- 21:01Well, there's another one. There might be a 4.5. I'm going to talk
- 21:04about be flexible. Something's going to go wrong. Here's the other thing about
- 21:08this. In between forget about yourself and be flexible is
- 21:13there's an interaction, right, where we use our
- 21:16listening ears. We
- 21:20use our ears. So listening. In fact,
- 21:24the podcast that Erika and I are doing is called Healthy, Happy, Wise, Wealthy. And
- 21:27we did a recap after our first. We just really started it. So after our
- 21:30first, and we have had some great speakers on there, both in the realm of
- 21:34health and in the realm of entrepreneurship and leadership. The
- 21:37number one thing. I already prepped this. You guys can answer it correctly. What's the
- 21:41number one thing you think they talked about? Oh,
- 21:45come on. I just said it. Listening, Listening.
- 21:48So what's that? They did. They
- 21:52said, oh, my gosh, check your hair, please.
- 21:56So. So listening is actually an important skill set in everything
- 22:00in life, right? With acting, I'm telling you, if you're not
- 22:04listening to your scene partner, you're a bad actor. It doesn't matter how much you
- 22:07have your lines memorized. If you're hosting
- 22:11something and you're not listening, you're not going to
- 22:15be connecting, right? So there's different ways of listening. You listen to what they
- 22:19say, right? You listen to what they might mean
- 22:22behind what they say. You listen to their body language. If they're getting,
- 22:26you know, anxious or something like, you know what I mean? Like, you listen to
- 22:29their body language, but you listen
- 22:34for them to get done talking so you can say something, right?
- 22:39No, no, no. That was a trick question.
- 22:43You all fail. You all fail. No, I'm kidding. You don't listen.
- 22:46You listen to respond, right? Which is why in this
- 22:50one, in this very last clip I played in the.
- 22:55This was a. Oh, I can't play
- 22:59the whole thing again. That's gonna be too annoying. Okay. In the very last one,
- 23:03it's like when I'm, when I'm hosting someone and we're having a talk
- 23:07back, right? About the thing. And it's just a conversation. You guys have
- 23:10conversations with people all the time, right? So in everything you're
- 23:14doing in sales and presentations, as much as possible. Even though,
- 23:18like right now this is just me up here talking, right? But
- 23:22you all matter, right? You all matter. This is your
- 23:25audience is who matters, right? You know, making sure that you guys feel
- 23:29like this isn't so hard. Maybe I could do this
- 23:33or I like what you're presenting. I can see how this
- 23:37would be useful to me in my business. I think I would like to purchase
- 23:40it, right?
- 23:44So I'm going to go back to this one right
- 23:48here. So if you guys are doing sales presentations,
- 23:53how many are doing a lot of sales presentations that you said,
- 23:58how many of you have looked up the cycle of selling?
- 24:04So the cycle of selling can be different depending on what your, what you're looking
- 24:08at, what you're selling. So look up, just do a
- 24:12Google search for cycle of selling. But it tends to be a little
- 24:16different depending on if you're in the store and the customer comes in or if
- 24:19you're on the phone or if you're doing like a group
- 24:22presentation, that kind of thing. But the first thing is you introduce
- 24:26yourself. They gotta know who you are. The second thing is you tell them why
- 24:29you're there. This is what I'm doing. This is what I have. The third is
- 24:33you present enough information so they can make a decision that yes or
- 24:36no, whether they think it would be helpful or not. And then you tell
- 24:40them how to purchase it. And then you solidify
- 24:44that sale by going back
- 24:48to being conversational or telling them another aspect of what
- 24:51they're buying that they might not know. So
- 24:56any questions on the cycle of Selling. Because that's not specifically what I have this
- 25:00on, but Google cycle of selling.
- 25:03Okay, if you're speaking often, this is like
- 25:07the thing where if you want to be someone or if you're going to do
- 25:09a lot of social media, if you're going to be doing a lot of sales,
- 25:12presentations, whatever it is, practice that one thing. So
- 25:16let's say you'd regularly like to give television interviews or speeches or
- 25:20presentations, or even post regularly on socials.
- 25:23This is a thing that I really recommend. If you are going to be on
- 25:27your socials and if you're going to be on camera,
- 25:31buy a couple things and practice. So these next
- 25:35two things are about practicing. Go to Amazon or
- 25:39wherever you want to do and look up softbox. It's just a light.
- 25:43It's a soft light. Buy two of them,
- 25:47set them up in your kitchen. Then buy
- 25:51a stand, a real simple tripod with an iPhone attachment.
- 25:55Then you're going to put your iPhone right here and you're going to talk about
- 25:59today. We're going to make some breakfast first. I like to start with
- 26:03coffee. The first thing I do when I make my coffee is I put water
- 26:07in the container and then this container is called a.
- 26:10I can't remember because it's still early in the morning. Stop asking me questions.
- 26:14It doesn't matter. You're just. You're going to record it and it's going to be
- 26:17uncomfortable and you're going to feel stupid.
- 26:21But when you go to do something for socials or when you go to do
- 26:25an interview on camera for whatever it is, you're going to be more
- 26:29relaxed. Does that make sense? This is
- 26:33actor stuff, number one. If you're not in a
- 26:36putting yourself in. This is life in general. If you're not putting yourself in uncomfortable
- 26:40positions that feel uncomfortable and feel stupid,
- 26:44maybe you feel stupid. You probably aren't going to grow, right?
- 26:48So I do not recommend you're walking down the street
- 26:52doing stupid, seeing silly stuff in front of a whole bunch of
- 26:55people. Unless that's just going to be your shtick that you're putting on socials. Then,
- 26:59you know, do your thing. But you don't have to look stupid in public.
- 27:03I do because I have to show you right now. But in general, do this
- 27:06at home, right? Okay. Cleaning, anything. Just.
- 27:09You have to practice. Have to practice.
- 27:13This is so out of pocket for business people. But I am telling you, if
- 27:16you want to be really good on your feet and you want to
- 27:20be able to know the answers
- 27:24without knowing the answers, you don't have to know the answers. You just have to
- 27:28know how to pivot. Right. To pivot quickly.
- 27:33If there's a room and everyone's silent and everyone's anxious, if
- 27:36you're the one who's feel comfortable talking to someone or going up and introducing yourself
- 27:40to someone. Someone. Right. Improv classes are good. I don't
- 27:44even know what there is here in town. There is some stuff in town.
- 27:48Okay, you're welcome. Is anyone here doing improv that could
- 27:51tell anyone what it is in Reno that's good?
- 27:56No. Okay. All right,
- 28:00last lesson. Go back to the beginning.
- 28:04Okay. Rinse and repeat.
- 28:08We're going to do this first. On the other side of your
- 28:11card, grab your index card. Turn it over. Does anyone need an index card
- 28:16and a pen and pencil?
- 28:20Can I? Yeah. Okay.
- 28:25Anyone else need one, or do you have a pen?
- 28:28Okay,
- 28:33so you. I mean, this is. Just say, my name is. You need one.
- 28:37Three. All right, where did I put those? Here they are. Okay.
- 28:43All right. You guys do not have to say
- 28:47this exactly how it is, but write down how you'd introduce yourself. So
- 28:52my name is Mary Meyer, and I work with. You don't have to say those
- 28:56exactly. And I work with KOLO TV, Channel 8, ABC.
- 29:00I'd also like to talk to you today about a podcast that I have
- 29:04that's mine. So
- 29:08anyone else need one? Okay. Anyone need a pen?
- 29:12Otherwise you borrow. Okay.
- 29:19Okay. Everyone stand up. It'll be so much more fun after you write that.
- 29:25This is where. Like I said, normally we'll do this by ourselves, but today we're
- 29:28going to do it all together. It's going to be so great. Everyone stand
- 29:32up. Thank you. Just pick. If you guys could pick
- 29:35one person. Just pick. Go around. Pick one person,
- 29:40and we're going to do this. That's
- 29:43good. Just do the
- 29:47basic introduction. Just go ahead and do it.
- 29:53Okay. All right. I don't know how to stop, everybody, but.
- 29:57Okay, thank you. Hold on, hold on. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
- 30:01I'm sorry to stop you. I want you. I want to. I want to
- 30:05do a little practice like we're doing.
- 30:08This is awesome. This is perfect. All right, if you.
- 30:12If you guys can hear me, let's do it a different way now. Now
- 30:16I'm going to make you uncomfortable now. You did something that's comfortable. You did something
- 30:20that's comfortable. You said it in a normal voice. You did great because I couldn't
- 30:23get you to stop. So that was perfect. But we're going to
- 30:27practice something that's silly. Now, right, we're
- 30:31going to go ahead and say what we just said, this little thing on our
- 30:34paper, but we're going to sing it
- 30:39and the Jingle Bells theme one at a time.
- 30:44My name is Mary Meyer. I can't do Jingle bells, jingle
- 30:47bells, jingle all the way. My name is Mary Meyer and
- 30:51I. Oh, shoot. I can't do it. That one
- 30:55is too hard for me. Okay, we're gonna do it a different way. We're gonna
- 30:59do. We're gonna do all around the Mulberry Bush. Who just
- 31:02said that? Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
- 31:07My name Twinkle, twinkle, little star. My name is
- 31:10Mary Meyer and I work for KOLO 8.
- 31:14And I'm here to talk about a podcast.. Okay, you guys try Twinkle,
- 31:18Twinkle, little Star one at a time.
- 31:47All right. Awesome. Thank you, guys. Thank you. All right.
- 31:51Thank you, guys. You're very, very, very good at this.
- 31:55Okay, we're going to do. No, keep standing. We're going to try it again.
- 32:01So instead of introducing yourself, I just want you to
- 32:05read this. You're about to give your
- 32:08pitch. Check the mirror. Posture, posture. Shoulder
- 32:12blades. Together. I want you to say it.
- 32:16I'm, you know, I 20 years in the south, so I just want you to
- 32:19say it like this. As much as you can. Okay? I just want you to.
- 32:22We're going to do that. We're going to public speaking. But this is just silliness.
- 32:26Now, before we give the talk, before we give the sales talk or the
- 32:29presentation, we're going to be in our house. Doing what?
- 32:34Practicing to make ourself laugh so we're not nervous
- 32:38anymore. Okay, you guys go ahead and try it one at a
- 32:41time. Or together. Yeah. Yeah, go ahead.
- 32:47Okay, so I am also an actor,
- 32:51and I was a TV host for Tahoe TV for a while.
- 32:56All right, thank you, guys. Thank you. Okay,
- 33:01here we go. Next practice of making ourselves
- 33:05look like fools all together. We're having so much fun.
- 33:09Okay, we're going to say, it's not about you. You already know this stuff.
- 33:13Your focus should be on who you're speaking with, but you're going to do this
- 33:16and you say it. Come on, guys, let's do
- 33:20it together. Ready? Just do it with me. It's
- 33:24not about you. You already know this stuff.
- 33:28Your focus should be on who you're speaking
- 33:32with. All right?
- 33:36Scale of 1 to 10, who feels stupid yet? Okay,
- 33:40we're making it. I know this is so stupid, silly, but
- 33:44it works. I promise it works, okay?
- 33:48Something will go wrong. Be in that space of playfulness while you
- 33:52practice it in Magic wand, everyone, as we say this
- 33:55magic wand and on your partner. Ready?
- 33:59Say it. Let's do a Tinkerbell voice. Just something super
- 34:03high as we do it. Here we go. Something
- 34:07will go wrong. Tinkerbell,
- 34:10Be in that place of playfulness that you
- 34:14practiced in. Something
- 34:18will go wrong.
- 34:23Oh, thank you for being the most raucous
- 34:27group, I hope, of the whole thing.
- 34:33So, okay, next slide. Next
- 34:36slide. We're just gonna say this stuff together. Ready? This
- 34:40time. You are a giant. This is a lot what improv is
- 34:44like. I'm telling you what. Even when I did door to door sales in the
- 34:48morning before we left, we had to get out in the parking lot and
- 34:52scream like fools for about three minutes. We're
- 34:55enthusiastic. You know, I can't even remember it now. Happy.
- 34:59It's like happy, healthy, wise, wealthiest people. Probably the name. That's why I picked the
- 35:02podcast. We're so excited. And we would do this stuff and
- 35:05go. It was like, literally like cheerleading. We do it for three minutes. So, like,
- 35:09it works for sales too. Just don't do it in public.
- 35:13I keep saying that. Okay, so we're a giant. So you're
- 35:17gonna. Big, wide, big, wide. As low as your
- 35:21voice can go for this slide. Ready? You'd
- 35:24regularly like to give television
- 35:27interviews. Come on. Do your feet.
- 35:30Do your feet. Do your feet. Do your feet.
- 35:35That's right. Are on the socials.
- 35:40Rawr.
- 35:47Oh, my gosh, you guys are great. Thank you for doing this with me.
- 35:54This one is going to be so silly. Anyone have an idea? An
- 35:58idea from the audience? Anyone? Anyone?
- 36:02Come on. Idea for improving. Yeah,
- 36:06this slide.
- 36:10Goofy. Okay. Do a goofy sound. Do a goofy one.
- 36:14Ray, it's goofy.
- 36:17I don't know. You notice that what you gotta do is like that. What do
- 36:21you say? We're just gonna do it like. You know what? We already. We don't
- 36:24really finish our. We don't really finish our words. Okay?
- 36:27Right. Okay, so bye, guys. Do it with me. Bye.
- 36:31Film equipment and practice. You know, keep it
- 36:35simple. Two sock boxes, one
- 36:38tripod, one attachment. Practice
- 36:42filming yourself, cleaning, making dinner,
- 36:46giving your talks, etc. Okay, I need
- 36:50to know who doesn't do any cleaning at all. I'm just kidding.
- 36:54I don't need to know that. Okay, improv class,
- 36:58which is going to be. This would be actually a fun
- 37:02class to do with people. Is improv for business. We're going to go back
- 37:06to your introduction, switch partners, find someone else you
- 37:10don't know. This is the other thing. About
- 37:14being uncomfortable, where it's going to be uncomfortable.
- 37:18You two know each other. Go flip around. You know each other.
- 37:26So. Okay, you guys, let's do it like this.
- 37:31Sorry, it's hard for me to talk loud. I did this wrong
- 37:35because I said go introduce yourself
- 37:39in weird voices. You choose, do it twice. Okay.
- 37:45You guys are awesome. Thank you so much for playing. Was that fun?
- 37:51Do you guys. Do you guys feel like you will go home and do and
- 37:55be silly while you're practicing stuff? Yes. Okay, good.
- 38:01So we have a few more minutes. I wanted to finish. You know, this is
- 38:03like I said, this is so simple. It's so simple, right? It's
- 38:07just now a matter of practicing. So you got to remember
- 38:11that to get to the point of
- 38:15competence sometimes takes 10,000 hours of practice.
- 38:19So in the meantime, what do you do? You just practice
- 38:22and give yourself a break, right? You just do it. You can't
- 38:26get competent without doing it. Everyone you know, and you guys are probably, if you're
- 38:30here, you're probably already at a level of competence, right? So then
- 38:34it's just more add to it. Whatever.
- 38:38Thoughts or questions, anyone.
- 38:44You're using the giant voice at home.
- 38:49Yes. How'd you come up with this? How did I come. Did you come up
- 38:52with this? And if you did, how did you come up with it? Erika? How
- 38:55did I come up? Did I come up? I don't know. I did come up
- 38:57with it. Yeah. You know, I think I work with. I've done
- 39:01these things, right? This is why I kind of wanted to go through. I have
- 39:03this weird life where I've had. I've done the stuff for the
- 39:07on camera stuff to a pretty. Not to the point where, you
- 39:11know, my face. I actually did run into one person who knew my face, which
- 39:14is really weird recently. I'm like, I don't even know why,
- 39:18but I have about 50 IMDb credits, right? And that's not the
- 39:22commercials and that kind of thing. But most actors do not do sales
- 39:26unless it's real estate. Lots of them do real estate.
- 39:30Lots of them do real estate. But no one usually has done
- 39:33door to door sales or that kind of thing. And what I have found in
- 39:36the two is that there's just a lot of similarities, right. And there's just not
- 39:40the same with giving a presentation in front of people. Right. It's very, very
- 39:44similar skill sets. And the two worlds don't really
- 39:48collide a lot. So. Yeah. And as I'm working with,
- 39:52and when I was working with this one client that I Was telling
- 39:56you about the difference it made for her too. I literally, it was just
- 39:59us in a room. I made her do this and say her
- 40:03speech, her speech the whole time doing this. And it was like, you
- 40:07know, I will not make you guys do that unless you. Maybe I will. I
- 40:10won't. I'll just be the silly one. But you know, like, you
- 40:14cannot, you cannot be serious. After that you're going to go in
- 40:18light hearted giggly. You're not going to.
- 40:24Because this is right, because this is what people normally do. That was, I was
- 40:27doing a bit. This is like, you know, you lose, you can lose your personality
- 40:30doing this. So. Yeah,
- 40:35personally, I think the hardest thing are sales calls. When you're calling people,
- 40:38cold calling. Is anyone. Yeah,
- 40:45some of this is the same thing. It's
- 40:49just the thing about sales is about
- 40:52numbers, right? So you just go, I need to get
- 40:56through 10 no's so I can get to 2 yeses. However,
- 40:59in your mind you're doing that, you know, so you play a little games with
- 41:03yourself. Probably something like this. Don't sing to them on the phone
- 41:08unless maybe you do. And if you do, then let me know, take my card
- 41:12and tell me if that works. But you know, there's
- 41:16always, there's always just the, there's always just doing the work. So that's, that's
- 41:19always a thing. But. All right, any, any other questions or things that you
- 41:23feel like this would be helpful for doing or any input about how you're going
- 41:27to use it. We have another five minutes. I kind of ended
- 41:30early. Oh, look at that. I'm so accurate. Look in the back. Five
- 41:34minute warning. So,
- 41:39okay, so I, I used to sell cemetery
- 41:42property when I was younger. How fun.
- 41:46I used to have to cold call people and let
- 41:49them know that we would be in their neighborhood giving out emergency
- 41:52guidebooks. And one time I got a hold of somebody and I
- 41:56totally, it was hot outside, so I totally changed the conversation.
- 42:00And I said, you know, it's really hard, hot outside. And they said, yes.
- 42:04And I said, do you have any iced tea? And they're like, what? I go,
- 42:07do you have any iced tea? They're like, what? I go, do you have
- 42:11any iced tea? And they said, yes. And I said, okay, great, I'll be
- 42:14over in 10 minutes. And I showed up and they
- 42:18said, you're a tenacious little broad, aren't you?
- 42:22Were you able to sell? I love that. I actually got them a
- 42:26cemetery.
- 42:42What do you recommend doing for an industry that has
- 42:46maybe a lot going on? Like, we have a lot of services and different modalities
- 42:50that we offer. And we live in a world that every. Everybody wants to hear
- 42:53it in 30 seconds or less. How do you do that? How do you
- 42:57breathe through that and like come up with that, like dialed in,
- 43:01I guess, script per se, while still like staying authentic.
- 43:05Do they give you any kind of script or it's just up to you? Well,
- 43:08it's my holistic center. Yeah, we do everything from massage
- 43:12to like energy work to yoga, a lot of
- 43:16other different services, dance classes. Like, there's
- 43:19a lot. So it's like when I actually was on KOLO 8 last week
- 43:23and she's asking me like, what do you do? What do you offer? And I'm
- 43:26like, girl, it's a lot to put in like a little 30 second thing.
- 43:30And I think that is, that's a good point because this is a thing that,
- 43:32and honestly, this is really common. Like, I know with us,
- 43:36for example, I'm like, yeah, we have five different television stations and we
- 43:40can put stuff on the website and we also have everything from digital SEO SEM,
- 43:43we have social media, we have YouTube, we have. But see, then you talk really
- 43:47fast and I feel like, no, no, so you don't, you don't do that. Okay,
- 43:50so what I would do is say we have, we have different
- 43:53things to help you with, with health and wellness. Anything
- 43:57from yoga to dance class. We also have different. And I can't remember everything you
- 44:01said. I apologize. Just X, X and X and Y. So what
- 44:05I like to do is just sit down with people and just hear what they're,
- 44:09what they're going through and what kind of their, their thoughts are. I want to
- 44:12hear from you and then I will have an idea about what might serve
- 44:16you best. Something along those lines. Okay, so keep it pretty broad.
- 44:20Well, what I usually is to the. It's not. Not
- 44:24necessarily broad, but like if there's, there's usually different things
- 44:27in services and it's real common in businesses to do that.
- 44:31I know there is ways to make it into a 15 or a 30 second
- 44:35because I, I work with businesses to do that for commercials, so.
- 44:39And they usually think it's impossible. It actually is not impossible.
- 44:43It's just that we're so in the weeds they don't have to know
- 44:47everything. And this goes back to focusing on
- 44:51who you're talking to. So they're real busy, they're in the middle of all
- 44:54kinds of things. What is the need so you don't have to go over
- 44:58the Services you have to go to. What. What is a need that you're
- 45:02meeting. That might be a way to so like the feeling that you're.
- 45:06We've been really helping people who just don't feel great.
- 45:10They're having issues with their energy
- 45:14and they just want to kind of just be out moving and doing some fun
- 45:18stuff. And we have a lot of moving. And
- 45:22I'm thinking of dance.. I'm not quite sure exactly how I phrase that. Yeah, we
- 45:26just have some things that have really been helpful for people
- 45:30to help them feel better about themselves and to feel better about
- 45:33their health. So it would be something along those lines. I think
- 45:37go to the need. I think like knowing your audience. Right. Because
- 45:41like I represent the community college cncc. We have tons of
- 45:45different programs and training services. But it depends on who I'm talking to right
- 45:49now. I would talk to entrepreneurs and let you know that we have these types
- 45:52of classes that accompanies with. Right. That I wouldn't start talking about
- 45:55manufacturing or something off the wall because I don't know what everyone
- 45:59is. So I think. I don't know. I mean, there probably are a few
- 46:03questions that you can just come up with your standard questions. If you're in sales,
- 46:06there's going to be maybe some answers. There's going to be objections.
- 46:11So maybe some standard answers to objections. Maybe some
- 46:14standard answers to questions. One thing I get a lot is can you send me
- 46:18a package? And so I'd be like, I can, but I like to sit
- 46:22down with businesses so I know what you're doing and know if there's
- 46:25any way we could fit in with what you're already doing or not. And no
- 46:29big deal either way because I honestly do feel no big deal either way. But,
- 46:33you know, so. Okay, time is up. Thank
- 46:37you guys so much. I appreciate you guys so much. Thank you.
- 46:43Yeah, I'd love it if you guys find me on LinkedIn. Follow social. I do
- 46:47have some cards up here. Here and then back. Just my KOLO cards and then
- 46:51these are the other ways to get a hold of me. So I appreciate you
- 46:54all. Thanks for being here. Come say hi to me. I'll go outside.
