- 0:00Good morning and happy Valentine's Day to all our listeners !
- 0:04It's 5 am on Saturday , February 14th , 2026 , here on the Pacific coast .
- 0:11I am your host , Barnaby Brightside , and you are listening to Spy Trader , your frequent checkin on the pulse of the markets .
- 0:18Whether you are brewing your first cup of coffee or getting a head start on the holiday , I am here to wrap up a truly rollercoaster week on Wall Street .
- 0:27We started the week with a historic bang as the Dow Jones Industrial Average crossed the 50,000 mark for the first time ever .
- 0:35However , the celebration was shortlived .
- 0:39By the time the closing bell rang on Friday , February 13th , the Dow had retreated to 49,451 , down 1.12% for the week .
- 0:51Our favorite benchmark , the S&P 500 , or SPY , slid 0.97% to close at 6,832.76 , while the techheavy Nasdaq Composite , or QQQ , took the hardest hit , falling 1.63% .
- 1:08So , what is driving this mood shift ?
- 1:11It is a classic tale of the Great Rotation .
- 1:14Even though the economic data supports a soft landing , investors are getting nervous about the high price tags on artificial intelligence .
- 1:23The January CPI report showed inflation cooling to 2.4% , lower than the 2.5% expected , and the labor market remains incredibly resilient with 130,000 jobs added in January .
- 1:37But despite the Goldilocks economy , investors are fleeing growth for safety .
- 1:42The technology sector fell 2.6% late in the week , and Financials were the worst performers , dropping nearly 5% .
- 1:50We saw some big moves in individual names too Cisco Systems shares plummeted 11.6% after warning about high costs in the AI hardware race , and AppLovin tumbled 18.3% .
- 2:04On the bright side , Spotify was a massive winner , soaring 14.8% on incredible profit growth , and Equinix gained 10.9% as the demand for physical data centers stays whitehot .
- 2:18Even the reliable CocaCola slipped a bit after missing revenue targets .
- 2:23Looking at the big picture , the market is also trying to digest the news of Kevin Warsh being nominated as the next Fed Chair .
- 2:31This uncertainty has everyone wondering if we will see more aggressive rate cuts or a focus on shrinking the balance sheet .
- 2:39Now , let's talk about how to position your portfolio for the coming days .
- 2:45First , for your core holdings , I recommend staying diversified with a broadmarket approach like the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF , ticker VTI , or the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF , ticker IVV .
- 3:00With 60% of stocks currently outperforming the main index , owning the whole basket provides a muchneeded cushion .
- 3:07For a tactical play , consider shifting toward defensive income .
- 3:12The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR , ticker XLP , or the Utilities Select Sector SPDR , XLU , are great places to hide .
- 3:23XLP gives you exposure to reliable earners like McDonald's and Walmart , which are holding up well while tech remains volatile .
- 3:31In the fixedincome world , it might be time to lock in some yields .
- 3:36The iShares 20plus Year Treasury Bond ETF , ticker TLT , is a solid choice as inflation cools and investors look for a flight to quality .
- 3:46Finally , a note of caution on your technology holdings like XLK or the QQQ .
- 3:52While AI is certainly the future , the transition is proving to be expensive and disruptive for many .
- 3:58I recommend holding what you have or trimming positions rather than aggressively buying the dip until the tech sector reclaims its previous levels .
- 4:08The final verdict for this Saturday morning is to favor value and quality .
- 4:13Look for companies with strong cash flows rather than speculative AI promises .
- 4:18That is all for this episode of Spy Trader .
- 4:21I'm Barnaby Brightside , hoping your trades stay green and your Valentine's Day is filled with joy .
- 4:28We will see you in a few hours !
