- 0:00In the legendary novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count of
- 0:04Monte Cristo, an interesting anecdote is woven into the text
- 0:09as the underlying cause of the great fortune Edmund Dantes
- 0:12eventually recovered is related as due to the actions of a
- 0:16corrupt Pope who coveted money and who sold positions of
- 0:21cardinal in the Roman Church to wealthy men and then contrived
- 0:26to have them killed so he could resell the position.
- 0:30One of these men, understanding the risk he was undergoing,
- 0:34secreted his fortune on the Isle of Monte Cristo.
- 0:38The story of the corrupt Pope in this instance, who lived the
- 0:42life of a power hungry libertine with a lust for control of great
- 0:47wealth to indulge his desires, including a number of affairs
- 0:51with various mistresses, is based on an actual Pope,
- 0:55Alexander the 6th, who came from the infamous Borgia family and
- 1:01who used his holy robes as a means of indulging in behavior
- 1:05that remains shocking and infamous to this day.
- 1:10Modern day society has seen various individuals rise to
- 1:14great prominence as religious leaders and thereby accumulate
- 1:18enormous amounts of money which they use to fuel a lavish
- 1:23lifestyle and to enhance their power and prestige.
- 1:28What they preach and how they live their lives wind up in
- 1:33opposition to each other. In whatever form someone can
- 1:37acquire power and influence and use it for personal self
- 1:41aggrandizement, it is certain that some individuals have
- 1:45abused that power and influence and thereby besmirched the
- 1:50dignity that they have assumed under false pretences.
- 1:55This occurs throughout the world and is not limited to a
- 1:58particular religion or teaching. It is one of the misuses of
- 2:02power that the vital nature utilizes in some case to fulfill
- 2:07its desire. While we pay attention to
- 2:11headline cases, the same dynamic takes place at every level of
- 2:15human activity. The Dhammapada makes this point
- 2:20clear as we see in the below reference.
- 2:23Quote he who puts on the yellow robe while he is yet impure,
- 2:28lacking in self-control and lacking in loyalty.
- 2:32Truly he is unworthy to wear the yellow robe of the monk.
- 2:37End Quote. The damaputa, the mother
- 2:42observes quote. It is noteworthy that the two
- 2:46defects insisted upon here are lack of self-control and lack of
- 2:50loyalty. Loyalty means here sincerity,
- 2:54honesty. What the Damapada censures most
- 2:58severely is hypocrisy. To pretend that you want to live
- 3:02the spiritual life and not to do it.
- 3:05To pretend that you want to seek the truth and not to do it.
- 3:09To display the external signs of consecration to the divine life,
- 3:14here symbolized by the yellow robe, but within to be concerned
- 3:19only with oneself, one's selfishness, and one's own
- 3:23needs. End Quote.
