- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Richard Duggan. In the news, the chair of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: Public Accounts Committee says she plans to call an expedited
- 0:10Speaker 1: public hearing into the Auditor General's recent report on government-run
- 0:14Speaker 1: long-term care facilities. Last week's AG audit found that the
- 0:17Speaker 1: provincial government failed to provide sufficient care and oversight for
- 0:21Speaker 1: residents living in the facilities it operates. Mount Zion MHA
- 0:25Speaker 1: Sarah Studley says the committee plans to bring several key
- 0:27Speaker 1: areas of concern directly to NL Health Services. She says
- 0:31Speaker 1: they expect immediate action and response on some of the
- 0:34Speaker 1: report's more critical findings.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Already, you know, the committee has been talking about some
- 0:38Speaker 2: areas that we will be communicating to NLHS that we
- 0:41Speaker 2: expect immediate response and action on. For example, the vulnerable
- 0:46Speaker 2: sector checks and the criminal record checks, medicine management and
- 0:51Speaker 2: fire and life safety, for example, were some of the
- 0:53Speaker 2: issues that we've already talked about that we will be
- 0:56Speaker 2: communicating to NLHS that we do expect immediate resolution on.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And we are going to be looking at an expedited hearing.
- 1:05Speaker 1: A tracker located inside of an item from a store
- 1:08Speaker 1: helped lead the RNC to a suspect on Sunday. Police
- 1:11Speaker 1: recall just after 4 p.m. to a business in the
- 1:13Speaker 1: east end of St. John's. They say a 42-year-old man
- 1:17Speaker 1: took an item that contained an anti-theft device, which led
- 1:20Speaker 1: the officers to him. The man fled on foot, but
- 1:23Speaker 1: he was still carrying the item, and police tracked him
- 1:25Speaker 1: to a nearby backyard where he was arrested. The accused
- 1:28Speaker 1: is facing charges of theft and breach of probation. He
- 1:30Speaker 1: was held for court. The Canadian Union of Public Employees
- 1:34Speaker 1: is celebrating what it calls its greatest victory this Labor
- 1:37Speaker 1: Day following last month's labor dispute at WestJet. Flights were
- 1:42Speaker 1: canceled in August, forcing travelers to scramble to find alternative arrangements.
- 1:46Speaker 1: While a disruption for passengers, QPNL President Sherry Hillier says
- 1:50Speaker 1: getting a fair deal for flight attendants was a resounding
- 1:53Speaker 1: victory for the union and its workers. I know many
- 1:56Speaker 1: of your listeners are saying, oh, you interrupted my travel plans.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But, you know, federal government stayed out of that. It
- 2:03Speaker 2: was a big win for QP across the country and
- 2:07Speaker 2: a good win for the unionized flight attendants of WestJet.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Coast Guard inshore rescue boat stations in the province are
- 2:14Speaker 1: winding down their seasonal maritime search and rescue services. The
- 2:18Speaker 1: stations in CBS, Terranova National Park, and Notre Dame Bay
- 2:21Speaker 1: will close at midnight tonight. The stations are staffed by
- 2:24Speaker 1: post-secondary students to provide additional search and rescue services during
- 2:28Speaker 1: the summer season. Seasonal stations will remain open until December
- 2:32Speaker 1: 31st depending on weather and ice conditions, while year-round stations
- 2:36Speaker 1: remain open. The town of Grand Falls, Windsor is mourning
- 2:39Speaker 1: the loss of Deputy Mayor Rod Bennett, who has died
- 2:42Speaker 1: after a battle with cancer. Bennett, who first served on
- 2:45Speaker 1: the town council from 2017 to 2021, was elected once
- 2:49Speaker 1: again last fall, this time as Deputy Mayor. A member
- 2:52Speaker 1: of the Halibut First Nation, Bennett also served as the
- 2:55Speaker 1: Director of Operations. The town says Bennett was always approachable
- 2:58Speaker 1: and was genuinely passionate about making his community a better place.
- 3:02Speaker 1: They state that his contributions will be remembered and he
- 3:05Speaker 1: will be deeply missed. And business is booming for a
- 3:08Speaker 1: young entrepreneur who is popping up at marketplaces in St.

- 3:17Speaker 1: help of her dad. She sells a number of items,
- 3:20Speaker 1: including bracelets, earrings, and kinetic sand. Mugford says she started
- 3:24Speaker 1: off with help from youth ventures and then moved on
- 3:26Speaker 1: to selling her items in various markets, such as the
- 3:29Speaker 1: ones held at the Avalon Mall and the Pedestrian Mall.
- 3:32Speaker 1: She says business is good.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Over the past weekend.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I made over $ 600. It's fun to like sell things
- 3:38Speaker 1: and stuff. Mugford says the rest of the year will
- 3:41Speaker 1: be busy with over a dozen more markets between now
- 3:44Speaker 1: and Christmas. A link to the Rowan's Creations Facebook page
