Latest / Bleacher Report / Coco Gauff Reacts to Her Win vs. Madison Keys to Go to the Semifinals _ 2025 Roland-Garros
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It was the first time that Coco has lost a set,
- 0:02Speaker 1: but you did mention that third set, lost just two
- 0:05Speaker 1: points on serve in second that third set, but she
- 0:09Speaker 1: goes on to advance to the semifinals. It is the
- 0:12Speaker 1: sixth time in the last seven Majors that American woman
- 0:15Speaker 1: has made it to the semifinals. She rushed right from
- 0:18Speaker 1: the court out here to our set. Coco Goff, the
- 0:22Speaker 1: best American tennis player going right now. Push to the brink,
- 0:27Speaker 1: but never back down. A roller coaster all American thriller.
- 0:31Speaker 1: We were in the back pins and needles. Every time
- 0:35Speaker 1: you swung the racket, I just you get the win.
- 0:38Speaker 1: You go to your third semifinal roll in Garrison four years.
- 0:41Speaker 1: What was it like to play it, because for us
- 0:44Speaker 1: it was crazy to watch it.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it was stressful.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Honestly, I felt like every time she had a four
- 0:49Speaker 3: and it was like a fifty to fifty chance of
- 0:50Speaker 3: your winner. So yeah, it was really tough, and she
- 0:54Speaker 3: was I thought she was playing well, like you know,
- 0:57Speaker 3: maybe she made some on for Sarah's but I think
- 0:59Speaker 3: considering how hard and tough it was, like, I'm just
- 1:01Speaker 3: happy to get through it today.
- 1:03Speaker 1: But that third set did it click like it seemed
- 1:05Speaker 1: to us it did on television.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you know one, I think one. All
- 1:10Speaker 3: In the second, I was just like, I need to
- 1:12Speaker 3: miss long. I was missing a lot in the net
- 1:14Speaker 3: and some balls landing too short, and she was obviously
- 1:17Speaker 3: taking advantage of punishing me for that. So I was
- 1:19Speaker 3: just like, if I missed long, like I can go
- 1:21Speaker 3: out like this. So then obviously, when you're you know,
- 1:25Speaker 3: you're the match, the pressure of the match comes. So
- 1:27Speaker 3: if you aim kind of I think the baseline or further,
- 1:29Speaker 3: the ball lands like a foot or two in front.
- 1:32Speaker 2: So that's how it's trying to do.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Yeah, we talk a lot about your serve, about your
- 1:36Speaker 4: four and about everything else, and I don't want to
- 1:38Speaker 4: do that today. We're your opponents are out playing right
- 1:41Speaker 4: now as we're recording this, and they're starting. The tiebreaker
- 1:44Speaker 4: is there on paper, Andrea Vas should be the tougher opponent.
- 1:47Speaker 4: But with this boy song, with the whole French crowd
- 1:50Speaker 4: behind her, do you have someone you prefer playing over the.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Other Honestly, no, I mean obviously mar and I played
- 1:58Speaker 3: each other like twice just this play season, along like
- 2:01Speaker 3: in the two big tournaments, So you know if I
- 2:04Speaker 3: were to play her again, it'd be another tough match.
- 2:06Speaker 2: You always have tough matches, and.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Every time you play someone so soon, I think is
- 2:10Speaker 3: so hard because you know there's not much that either
- 2:13Speaker 3: you're going to do different, but you also know that
- 2:15Speaker 3: she's going to prepare for the way that you played
- 2:17Speaker 3: her the last time. And obviously with a boy song,
- 2:19Speaker 3: she's having a great tournament, and I think playing free,
- 2:22Speaker 3: like she has no pressure on her and with the
- 2:24Speaker 3: French crowd, I think maybe helps her elevate her game.
- 2:27Speaker 2: So either way, it would be a tough match.
- 2:30Speaker 5: It's always tough playing a friend. You played Maddie. I
- 2:32Speaker 5: think both of you were nervous at the beginning. Yeah,
- 2:35Speaker 5: was there a point of the match where it kind
- 2:37Speaker 5: of where things settled and in your mind you went, Okay,
- 2:39Speaker 5: I'm good now, like my game's with me, I'm playing well.
- 2:43Speaker 3: I would say I caught to four all and then
- 2:46Speaker 3: five four to two. I had a set point and
- 2:48Speaker 3: then that tiebreaker. I feel like I lost it a
- 2:50Speaker 3: little bit, but I think it was important to make
- 2:53Speaker 3: that set competitive.
- 2:54Speaker 2: So I was just fighting for every game.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Obviously, I didn't expect to kind of be in the
- 2:58Speaker 3: position to win that set, to be honest, but I
- 3:00Speaker 3: was just like, let me just stay in it as
- 3:01Speaker 3: long as possible. Obviously it's a big difference when you
- 3:04Speaker 3: go win a set six to one pretty easy then
- 3:07Speaker 3: to like having the fight for So I think just
- 3:09Speaker 3: fighting those extra couple games made a difference for the
- 3:12Speaker 3: whole match.
- 3:12Speaker 6: Well, you you making the stummis it's almost like your
- 3:14Speaker 6: season vet now, which I think it's crazy to say, Cook,
- 3:17Speaker 6: I hope you don't feel like a season vet at all.
- 3:20Speaker 6: But you've had to go through so much adversity to
- 3:22Speaker 6: get here. But you had a solid clay court season
- 3:26Speaker 6: leading in the different matches you've had to face, the
- 3:28Speaker 6: different matchups.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I think getting to talk to.
- 3:31Speaker 6: Pros at your level, what is the cheat code of
- 3:34Speaker 6: how you're able to adjust to these different adversities So
- 3:37Speaker 6: people at home can be like, oh, I have a
- 3:39Speaker 6: step that Cocoa Go has told me, so I know
- 3:41Speaker 6: how to do this.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Honestly, I think I'm pretty good to kind of gauge.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Where my level is.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Even Like for my first round, I won two and two,
- 3:49Speaker 3: but I felt like it was not good and I
- 3:51Speaker 3: knew I needed to raise it.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Is this more emotionally or is it physically game wise?
- 3:55Speaker 3: I think game wise, I think obviously yours first round nerves,
- 3:58Speaker 3: but you know, you go into resounds, the slams, and
- 4:01Speaker 3: you feel like when you're playing good and it's fine,
- 4:03Speaker 3: and even though it's a two and two, but there's
- 4:04Speaker 3: those good two and twos and one that you don't
- 4:07Speaker 3: feel so good, and that I was like, I need
- 4:08Speaker 3: to raise my game, and then the second round the same.
- 4:11Speaker 3: And then honestly, when I played Buscobo, even though that
- 4:13Speaker 3: was a tough second set, I still think that I
- 4:16Speaker 3: thought that that was where the first match where I
- 4:18Speaker 3: felt like I was.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Finding my rhythm.
- 4:20Speaker 3: And then yes Jay again or two days ago against Alexandrova,
- 4:23Speaker 3: I think that match kind of solidify Okay, I'm finding
- 4:25Speaker 3: it and finding it, and I knew playing today against
- 4:28Speaker 3: Madison that I had to really be there, and I
- 4:31Speaker 3: know I'll continue having to be there, but I'm just
- 4:34Speaker 3: glad that I was able to be aware of where
- 4:36Speaker 3: I started it, even though it was a straightforward win,
- 4:38Speaker 3: but knowing that I need to raise the level to.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Do further here. So Sam, you got to be patient.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Okay, Yeah, So I guess my question is what are
- 4:46Speaker 4: the one or two things that you tell yourself if
- 4:48Speaker 4: you feel like you're struggling or not feeling super comfortable
- 4:50Speaker 4: out there. What are the two key or one key
- 4:53Speaker 4: thing that you tell yourself?
- 4:55Speaker 2: Usually, just go for my shots.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I think I can play my worst tennis when I'm
- 4:59Speaker 3: in the balls. They are landing too short and I'm
- 5:01Speaker 3: kind of running all over the court, So trying to
- 5:03Speaker 3: tell myself to go for my shots and play with height.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I think that is also the main thing. When you
- 5:08Speaker 3: play with height, it forces you to hit deeper, and yeah,
- 5:11Speaker 3: obviously when the ball is deeper.
- 5:12Speaker 2: It's harder for them to make you run.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Is your dad okay right now? In the second set,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I literally was like, man, I hope Coco's dad's doing.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I haven't seen him after the match. Actually, usually we
- 5:25Speaker 2: probably went.
- 5:25Speaker 3: To go get a beer or something to the decompressed,
- 5:28Speaker 3: so I haven't seen him yet. He texted me obviously
- 5:31Speaker 3: after the match. But knowing usually they kind of when
- 5:33Speaker 3: there's a match like that, I usually know I'm probably
- 5:35Speaker 3: not going to see my girl.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I was watching your mom during the match. She would
- 5:40Speaker 1: close her eyes before each point. I'm sure she's saying
- 5:43Speaker 1: a little prayer and all that.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I don't know what she's speaking of.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Somehow, if your dad needs some fellows, we have him
- 5:48Speaker 1: here at this day. You are the best American tennis
- 5:51Speaker 1: player and we love watching your play. You're now onto
- 5:54Speaker 1: the semifinals. Congratulation, and I hope to get to see
- 5:57Speaker 1: you again. I hope fast in the business.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Thank you, Thank you, Jing
