- 1:28SPEAKER_03: And we are coming to you from the Big Dog Studio, and this is our community segment brought to you by our 10X partners with Sips Coffee and the Clemens.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: We love that around here in our community, being the official drink sponsor of the community segment.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Love it.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Hey, this segment is all about the people, organizations, businesses, and community leaders who are helping build stronger communities throughout the Midwest.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: And we couldn't do this segment without having organizations, operations like we do with our guests today.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: And look, we've got talking about healthcare.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: We're talking about it affects every single person in our community, healthcare, right?
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: No matter if you're infant to elderly, everyone in there.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: And more specifically, we're talking about the future of rural healthcare and what is happening right here in at the Carnival Area Hospital and clinics, right?
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: Because not just the hospital, it's and clinics.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: So the hospital has recently unveiled what they're calling the new era for the community and rural healthcare, correct?
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Is that that yeah?
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: Well so, Chris.
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: Well so.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: It's a new vision for the future and an exciting new chapter for the organization and the community it serves.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: And joining us today, we have to talk about that vision, we have Brian Burnside.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: He is the CEO and president of the Carlin Vario Hospital and Clinics.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: And we also have Tracy Coster.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: And Tracy, your position at the hospital.
- 2:46SPEAKER_08: I'm the COO.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: COO.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: I love having the chief operating officer with us from the hospital as well.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Welcome to the podcast.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: We love to, and also we have Ryan Kleman with us.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you almost forgot me, too.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: He is filling in for Caitlin.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Normally Caitlin in that seat, and Caitlin will be like, hey, ooh, ooh, ooh, oh, don't forget about me.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: No, I'm just kidding.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: So I want to go through a little bit first and Brian talk to us about your background, what brought you to Carnival, and your role at the hospital.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: And then we'll just kind of let that go from there.
- 3:14SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 3:14SPEAKER_04: Thanks, Chris.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: Thanks, Ryan, again, for letting us be here today.
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: We're real excited to be talking uh on your on your podcast here.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: I'm Brian Burnside.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: I'm the president CEO, of course, of Carnival Area Hospital and Clinics.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: I've been here for six years, as a matter of fact, and it has been a wonderful, wonderful experience.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: You know, my situation, of course, is I've been a hospital CEO for 21 years at this point, uh, focusing mostly on uh rural health care.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 3:38SPEAKER_04: And uh I just saw an opportunity here a number of years ago when uh with Kim Reed uh retired.
- 3:44SPEAKER_04: He had done such a wonderful job of um, you know, building the hospital, establishing it, helping it to become a really solid organization.
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, but I saw an opportunity to look and work with this board and this executive team uh to really see what was possible for rural healthcare here in McCoopin County.
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: And I saw some opportunity and uh just had a wonderful experience working with uh the board of directors, uh the whole team at the hospital, medical staff, and of course our executive team.
- 4:11SPEAKER_04: And we've just been on a process of trying to achieve what's possible for our community.
- 4:16SPEAKER_04: Uh that's been our kind of glowing understatement of what we're focused on, and that's what we've been doing over the last number of years.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: Tracy's been a big part of that team.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Tracy, if you want to just give a quick bio about how long you've been with Carlera Hospital and what you do as COO at the hospital.
- 4:33SPEAKER_08: So I have just celebrated my 21st year at Carlin Valera.
- 4:37SPEAKER_08: Congratulations.
- 4:38SPEAKER_08: Thank you.
- 4:38SPEAKER_08: I started in human resources and took on many other responsibilities along the way.
- 4:44SPEAKER_08: And so today when Brian got here, I was promoted to COO.
- 4:48SPEAKER_08: And today I oversee the HR department, marketing department, a lot of the support staff and such as facilities housekeeping.
- 4:56SPEAKER_08: And then also I am co-leading the rural health clinics, our primary care clinics with Tanya Kessinger.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: So Tanya is another great asset that the hospital has.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: I've known Tanya for 20 some odd years and just a great with her third project third day.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: And she's actually slated to be on her community segment.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Coming out.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna direct probably a lot of questions to Brian and Tracy.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: You jump in or elbow him and say, I got this, I got this.
- 5:20SPEAKER_04: You know, it won't be the first time.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: That's why she's here, right?
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: Brian, no, to make sure you don't know.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: So when you look at Carnival Area Hospital today, compared to where it was when you arrived, what are some of the biggest changes you've seen?
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, let's start with what the new hospital is here.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: When you started, right?
- 5:39SPEAKER_04: It was exactly.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: And the medical office building died as well.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: You know, let's start with kind of what's the same.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: The Carnival Area Hospital and Clinics team is just outstanding, right?
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: I mean, great people, a great focus on uh the organization and the community.
- 5:53SPEAKER_04: I couldn't be more proud of our team, you know, nurses, housekeepers, uh, x-ray techs, lab techs, the whole team of our organization cares deeply about the people that walk through the door.
- 6:03SPEAKER_04: So I want to start by saying, you know, that's really what's the same over the course of time.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: It's just gotten bigger.
- 6:08SPEAKER_08: It has.
- 6:09SPEAKER_08: 300 plus employees now?
- 6:11SPEAKER_08: Right at about 400.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: Wow, 400 now.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: We were talking a couple years ago.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: It was like 267.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: Now you're that's amazing.
- 6:18SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, we're right at 400.
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: Now we just had the acquisition of the McCupid Family Practice Center.
- 6:23SPEAKER_04: So that added another 50 people to our roster.
- 6:26SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 6:26SPEAKER_04: You know, but I but I think that the you know, the whole thing of what has changed over time is again, we've just tried to increase our clinical capabilities, have done a lot with our nursing team, uh building their confidence and competence to handle uh more advanced care than we had previously been doing.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: And we've got one little specific statistic that we talk about, case mix index, but that's essentially showing how much more advanced care we can provide, more acuity, more care for sickness.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: Um, that's been one of the big pieces.
- 6:57SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 6:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, but also, you know, the the development of our clinic system.
- 7:00SPEAKER_04: Uh really are we say this all the time.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: Primary care is the center of our strategy.
- 7:05SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 7:05SPEAKER_04: And and ultimately, our primary care clinics have gone from five primary care providers to 22 over the course of the last uh several years.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: So putting primary care as the center of our focus and then building around that has been very important.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: You're talking about just doctors, right?
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, just the amount of actual people that that see patients, just maybe preventative care as well, et cetera.
- 7:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, I'm I'm talking about physicians and nurse practitioners and NPAs.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: But yes, the you know, the core providers that it takes to run a primary care service.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: That's been been one piece.
- 7:37SPEAKER_04: But then also on top of that, we've uh developed a network of specialists.
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: Uh so we we like to talk about Crumble Area Hospital as a comprehensive rural health system.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: We have 26 specialists also coming and providing care to our patients inside the doors of the hospital every month or every every week along that way.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: I think the third thing, uh Chris, if I could just add, I think we've also just expanded our focus to make sure that we're serving more of the region.
- 8:05SPEAKER_04: You know, at one point we were focused on being Carlinville's hospital, uh, but today we're focused much much broader.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: Uh we have opened a brand new clinic that we built in Verdon.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: And then, of course, we have our Girard locations, now two locations in Carlinville for primary care, in Gillespie, and then ultimately down in Mount Olive as well.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: So those would be the three things that I would say have changed the most.
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: And that's that's great because I was going to talk about the evolution and the traditional perception of a small rule hospital, because our old location, that was the the true epitome of small rule, because you probably never saw or you only heard stories of the of the other hospital.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: Tracy was in that hospital, worked in that hospital.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: It kind of looks like a haunted hospital, guys.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: Now it's gone hospital, right?
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: But you know, now it's more towards a broader rural health system, like you were saying, right?
- 8:56SPEAKER_03: And so you guys have really explored that health care, like you said, beyond Carnival's city limits.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: And that all comes and starts with a vision.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: And I think it's key that you guys have have a key board and team that have really thought about that vision, right?
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: You want to touch on that just a little bit about the the vision.
- 9:16SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: I mean, vision is is everything to an organization.
- 9:20SPEAKER_04: You have to be looking forward.
- 9:21SPEAKER_04: I am I am so blessed to work with a tremendous board of directors.
- 9:24SPEAKER_04: You know, what as we started working together and they were seeing um some of the opportunity that was available to our organization and and some of the things that we wanted to work on, and they were able to grasp on to those concepts and say, boy, that makes pretty good sense.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: And the support that they've given me and the whole team over the last number of years has been has been tremendous.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: But but I think you're right.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: What one thing that we talk about a little bit is that in a lot of ways, we're called a critical access hospital, right?
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: And and that kind of creates one set of images about what a critical access hospital is.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: You have to be fewer than 25 beds, which we are.
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: But we're trying to function much more like a comprehensive rural health system.
- 10:07SPEAKER_04: We're trying to say for the residents of our community, we can provide you comprehensive care in this rural environment.
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: So, in a lot of ways, Chris, we we actually are functioning much more like a 100-bed community hospital than a small critical access hospital.
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: That's that's kind of the evolution that's taken place in over the last uh couple of years.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: And and as that has evolved and the evolution and the vision of what that future looks like, talk to our listeners and followers about the new era.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: Let's peel back the curtain.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: What is this new era?
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: Big announcement last week, right?
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: It was yeah, yeah, it was.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, on the 29th, it was announced out there, and and now we're hearing it for those that weren't able to attend or see the social media of of the Carmelaria Hospital where Karen Doolan's doing a kick butt job of.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I sorry, I'll say ass or whatever you guys are saying anyway.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: Um so, but talk to us about the new era.
- 10:59SPEAKER_03: What is coming for our community?
- 11:01SPEAKER_04: What a great question.
- 11:01SPEAKER_04: I think Tracy and I can kind of tag team this.
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: Love it.
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: You know, one thing that I think is is fascinating is the hospital CEO.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: It's very rare that you're able to lead through one era and then announce another era.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: And actually, that's the privilege that I had, I think, on the 29th.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: Over the last five years, we've generated a lot of momentum, but we laid out the case the other day that actually we're moving out of the momentum era into the transformative era.
- 11:29SPEAKER_04: And the idea behind the transformative era is that we're really focused on what will the hospital become in 2030.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: So we were able to do a couple of things that to lay out that case.
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: First, we talked just a little bit about Carnival Area Hospital.
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: The top seven priorities that we have right now are all about seizing opportunities, not really focused on shoring up a weakness or avoiding a threat.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: We're actually leaning into our top seven priorities are all about seizing opportunity.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: And that's a very unusual and rare type of thing.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 12:04SPEAKER_04: But as we uh we announced this, we wanted to say this isn't just Brian or the board or the executive team saying, hey, we're coming into a new era.
- 12:12SPEAKER_04: We wanted to prove it.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: And so we started with the idea of it makes great sense to announce that uh Dr.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: Michael Gleason and Dr.
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: Ashley Schneider um are on site and seeing patients.
- 12:23SPEAKER_04: Uh so we had an opportunity to present them to the community.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: And they are seeing patients under what?
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: General practitioner or their primary care.
- 12:30SPEAKER_08: And they're also so they're seeing patients in our primary care clinic here in Carlumville, but they are also working as hospitalists too, which is the inpatient care.
- 12:40SPEAKER_08: So they're doing some acute care work too.
- 12:42SPEAKER_08: So they'll be able to follow some patients right from inpatient state into the primary care.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Excellent.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: And it's a big deal.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: I just want to touch on that because this is what stuck out to me as a business person, the recruitment aspect of that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: It's a big deal to be able to recruit good quality people, younger people as well, right into a community from somewhere else and transplant them basically and make a career here.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: I just want to compliment you guys on that because I mean I'm and they both chuckled on that.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: It is a big deal.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: So Tracy, I think, has something to add to that.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: Well, it's some that means on your guys' organization, though, it's a big deal.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: It's an attractive opportunity to be part of an amazing growing team.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: Because I've that's one thing I've witnessed from when I first met you, Brian, and is that how much things have grown and the involvement Carl Vera Hospital has had in the communities, not just the community of Carloville, the communities.
- 13:36SPEAKER_08: So I mean I mean, they seen what we were doing, we were able to show them that.
- 13:40SPEAKER_08: They realized what a special place we were.
- 13:43SPEAKER_08: We were able to prove that to them.
- 13:45SPEAKER_08: One thing we haven't touched on, and I know Brian will have more to add to this, is our culture.
- 13:50SPEAKER_08: We have a wonderful culture for our teammates.
- 13:52SPEAKER_08: And so we are able to recruit and retain the best right here in Carlinville, and they seen that too, and they seen what a special place we were.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: No, that's exactly right.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: I you know, culture is everything, in my in my opinion.
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, we have a great situation that uh Tracy helped uh create.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: We put a focus five years ago on hey, let's really take care of our teammates and let's really help uh have a great culture because we were worried about retention.
- 14:18SPEAKER_04: We wanted to make sure that we were able to retain turnover just kills an organization.
- 14:22SPEAKER_04: The very best people.
- 14:23SPEAKER_04: And uh Tracy designed a thing that we were calling HR recalibration, and it just has paid off a tremendous dividends.
- 14:31SPEAKER_04: Our turnover rates across the country, one of the uh indexes for a national turnover rate is about 20% in in healthcare.
- 14:38SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 14:38SPEAKER_04: Uh you want to show the last three years of uh turnover?
- 14:42SPEAKER_08: We're running less than 12%.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: Wow, that's amazing.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: That's great.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: 50% roughly 50% less.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: That's a big thing.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: And that saves the organization money.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: It allows the progress to continue versus being slowed down when a cog of that wheel is pulled out and have to put a new one in.
- 15:00SPEAKER_08: I think that's perfectly sad.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: No, that's excellent.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: I I love that.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: So keep going with this new era.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: So culture I'm on the edge of my seat.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: Uh, the second thing that we announced on the 29th, of course, was our great new partnership with the Koopin Family Practice.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, we welcomed Dr.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: Weber and Dr.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: Corden and they're uh really strong organization into our strong organization.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: Uh, we presented them with a couple of Carnival Area Hospital white coats.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: That was kind of cool.
- 15:26SPEAKER_04: But, you know, incorporating that practice is essentially taking our primary care focus from about 25,000 visits a year to 50,000 visits a year.
- 15:37SPEAKER_04: Essentially, we'll all where are they located?
- 15:39SPEAKER_04: Under the Carnival logo.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: They're in Mount Olive, in Gillespie, and here in Carnival.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: So three different areas, which basically just expands the Carlero Hospital's footprint.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: That's that's amazing.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: That's amazing.
- 15:52SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:53SPEAKER_04: So that was our second piece uh that we that we talked about.
- 15:56SPEAKER_04: We recognized Dave Falk for supporting our vision in Verdon.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: Um, our vision in Verdon was not just to build a clinic there, but was to develop a healthcare campus.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: Uh Dave Falk is opening a redesign, building a redesigned Save More pharmacy there.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: Right next door on the north side.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: So they were on the square.
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly right.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: Now they're they're moving out there.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: Just want to give some kudos to the Verdon and Girard communities because I do we do business up there as well.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: And uh they're reinvesting back in their communities, and I know you guys are a big part of that up there.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be huge.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: How many acres are you?
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: I you mentioned that your we have about seven and a half acres.
- 16:32SPEAKER_04: Seven and a half, yeah.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: They're on the north side of Verden.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: They're on the north side of Verdon.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Are you looking to bring more people in for different things?
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, what when we purchased that um uh former farmland, we made a commitment that we would put healthcare-related businesses on that selling half acres.
- 16:47SPEAKER_04: So, you know, we we are looking for additional health care type businesses that might be interested in expanding on that property.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: Well, one thing and just slight sidebar before we get into the next thing about the new era is that one thing I've noticed about Carmel Area Hospital is that you guys are are not just in reactive care.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: Uh you don't want to be preactive on healthcare.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: You better you you want to make it where people don't have to come to the hospital.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: Preventing it, right?
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: You want to you want to be out there and just stop people from having to come in.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: So that your acreage up there, and there's a lot of acres.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Where's the current hospital?
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: How many acres sit in there?
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Oh gosh, I don't think I know that.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: There's there's a it's a big number.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, it's I know it's over 20.
- 17:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I think it's around 20.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: So where I was headed with that is, I mean, you can put in fitness centers, you can put in, you know, whatever, just uh to keep people healthier.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: You can but yet that's that health campus, you know.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: So all right, so new era.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: Sorry, I sidebared their own.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: No, it's good, good, good.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: But if they do need care, if they do need care, there's a lot of locations to go to, definitely.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: So so then we uh we talked just a little bit about uh what the hospital had done on the momentum period.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: And you know, during that time, of course, we grew very rapidly.
- 17:56SPEAKER_04: We brought specialists and we developed a tremendous relationship with Springfield Clinic.
- 17:59SPEAKER_04: Yes, and they are helping us to support our specialty care, a wonderful relationship there.
- 18:05SPEAKER_04: We also talked about um you know the idea that we have have enhanced our culture uh quite a bit, but we also have made a major financial move in cooperation with the city to pay down our original hug loan.
- 18:17SPEAKER_04: So um our the hospital's balance sheet is strong.
- 18:20SPEAKER_04: Uh we've reduced the leverage that we've been using, and um, that has been a positive move for our usual for rural healthcare facilities.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: Yes, it is normally they're closing out.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: So kudos.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, rural healthcare is is difficult for sure, and there are a lot of challenges.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: We're just in a situation where we're thriving at this moment, mostly I believe, because we're believing that we can serve the community deeper and uh and we can grow, and that's really what's what's paying out to be the case.
- 18:49SPEAKER_04: Then we we went into this uh this idea of you know where we were going.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: As I mentioned, the whole organization is focused on 2030.
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, that's just a a year, but I mean it's mark.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: You're talking about your chart, right?
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: And we the the chart you were showing.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: That's that's exactly right.
- 19:05SPEAKER_04: And and as we studied the impact of the McCoupin family and a few other things, we recognize that the growth that we've already incurred is essentially going to double itself again over the course of the next five years.
- 19:18SPEAKER_04: So the hospital that is looking ahead is is probably a$70 million organization, where the hospital in the past was a$20 million operation.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: And so that is the difference between the stable era, the momentum era, and then the transformative era.
- 19:36SPEAKER_04: But why that's important, it's not about dollars and cents to the hospital.
- 19:40SPEAKER_04: It's really about the impact that it has on the local community.
- 19:44SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 19:45SPEAKER_04: And so one of the things that happens every two years is the Illinois Hospital Association produces an economic impact report.
- 19:53SPEAKER_04: In 2020, that report showed Carlomville Area Hospital's impact on the community was$50.4 million dollars.
- 20:00SPEAKER_04: $50.4 million.
- 20:02SPEAKER_04: In 2026, Illinois Hospital Association uh provided that again.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: And the the number was$120.4 million dollars in 2026.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: So uh between 2020 and 2026, that's what happened.
- 20:15SPEAKER_04: Um, but ultimately, as we project forward, the impact in this transformative era, by the time we get to 2030, our impact will be 188 million dollars on the local local economy.
- 20:27SPEAKER_04: So we think that it's not only about uh providing great local health care, it's also about impacting our community from a financial perspective.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: Yes, I want to touch on this just very quickly.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: You know, in a lot of the things you guys are doing, people do see it, including myself.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: You know, the golf outing you guys did, right?
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: You guys hosted that great, great event.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: You guys brought all the local businesses out there and allowed them to participate and sponsor as well.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: And uh, this is one small example that's recent, but you guys are on top of the wages that you're paying your employees, which then, you know, go and spend money back into the community.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: You guys are good stewards by doing good things yourselves and also sponsoring things.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: I just want to give you guys kudos because people do see that.
- 21:10SPEAKER_08: Thank you.
- 21:10SPEAKER_08: That's why you're on the community segment.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:13SPEAKER_08: We work hard.
- 21:13SPEAKER_08: Uh, we have a great team overall.
- 21:15SPEAKER_08: We have a great marketing team.
- 21:16SPEAKER_08: As you said, Karen's joined that team.
- 21:18SPEAKER_08: She's awesome.
- 21:19SPEAKER_08: The whole team is awesome, and they work really hard to keep us out there in the community.
- 21:24SPEAKER_08: So it's it's uh yeah, it's fun.
- 21:26SPEAKER_08: Because they got you out here being out there being out of the community, right?
- 21:28SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: I'll make a joke real quick.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: I got some billboards up.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: If you guys ever want to give a couple of your billboard spots up, I've been I've been waiting on a couple.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: So you guys, I that that is something though, because you guys put, you know, because uh as uh an insurance agent in the local community, your face is a powerful thing, right?
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: I asked Brian, I said, Hey, you know who I am?
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: He's like, Yeah, I've seen you around, man.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: So, and that's one of the things as well is um you guys put your primary care providers, right, on those billboards.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Their faces in the community, they live here, they work here, and it's just a powerful thing.
- 21:57SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and I think you know, you've got to keep yourself.
- 22:00SPEAKER_08: in the face of the community.
- 22:01SPEAKER_08: And that is in multiple ways.
- 22:04SPEAKER_08: You can't just choose one avenue to do that because then somebody is going to miss that.
- 22:08SPEAKER_08: So it is very important that you, you know, have the a mix of how you keep your face in in the community.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 22:15SPEAKER_04: And I think there's kind of an interesting piece.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: You know, one thing five, six years ago, we started talking about we don't want the hospital to be McCupin County's best kept secret.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 22:24SPEAKER_04: We we did we didn't want that to happen.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: We wanted to let people know what we were up to.
- 22:28SPEAKER_04: And the marketing team has done a really great job with that.
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: You know, I think what's happening now is our market is expanding so much we're now marketing to people who don't know us very well.
- 22:39SPEAKER_04: They're not totally intimate with all the ins and outs of the hospital over the years.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: And I think that's a a great story because we provide a wonderful choice and option for them to receive great care, you know, here close to them close to them because everyone thought you got to drive to the big city, right?
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: Springfield, St.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: Louis, right, to get specialty care or specialty doctors to visit.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: Well those the map you showed very powerful right that was I I know it's a hot spots I'll call it, but you know you're showing the the central of what it used to be versus now and how you guys have expanded.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: I'm sure there's population bases involved in that, but it's that's a very powerful map you guys showed the other day.
- 23:17SPEAKER_08: I think in the past we were very centric Carlomville you know and we realized that area was in our name too.
- 23:23SPEAKER_08: And as we were growing and expanding really focusing beyond Carlomville and we are area hospital as well.
- 23:30SPEAKER_08: Absolutely and so getting people to see that and getting out in the area and finding out what other opportunities are out there that you know maybe we didn't even see thinking of ourselves just serving Carlumville.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: Well a couple things I know the 10x mindset because I'm big into 10 X is that to be 10x you have to be omnipresent.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: And one thing that a lot of people don't understand about omnipresence is it's being everywhere at once, whether you're on a billboard or on radio or on social media, on Facebook, Instagram or wherever or sponsoring a golf outing or or helping support our market at the plaza.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: True you know because it's a healthy option and and for your employees and stuff too.
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: You know, that's that omnipresence of so that when someone knows they need care, probably hospital.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: Makes you guys nervous I googled you.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: That's the alpha no you saw them here, here, here and here and here they don't know and that's the that's the true definition of being omnipresent when people don't know how they heard of you they just know you.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: And that's the thing with that.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: So one last thing on the topic about the hot spots he was talking about.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: In rural health care are there boundaries set?
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: Are there zones?
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: And I I I just mentioned this because there's only one other hospital in our county right Stone we're not we're not bashing anybody I'm just these are just questions right go to the west you got to go all the way to Boyd you know in the middle of Green County and then you've got to go north to Springfield right and then you've got to go northwest to Jacksonville to pass uh it's not passing anymore to change the name sure but I mean you've you've got other boundaries or it's just wherever someone wants to go.
- 24:59SPEAKER_04: You know I I think the the answer to that is you know the great organizations will always attract patients from sure from wherever the patients want to travel to and and so I think we want to be a great organization.
- 25:11SPEAKER_04: At the end of the day there are other organizations that that folks may be closer to or have relationships with but we feel that we're going to offer a great service and expand that access uh to patient care here in Cronville.
- 25:25SPEAKER_04: And those patients who will value that access uh will consider our organization.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: So do you expand your marketing into Green County to Boyd territory?
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: Do you expand?
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: I mean what I'm just this is the business in me coming out right you guys are there to take care of people and to run a business though.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: I mean Cromwell Hospital is still a business.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: Sure it is but it's it's patient focused it's patient forward focused.
- 25:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah so I think the answer to that is we're we're definitely like any other business we have a primary market we have a secondary market and we have a tertiary market.
- 25:56SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 25:56SPEAKER_04: Sure and and so our primary market gets a fair amount of of marketing and other activities secondary maybe a little bit less and tertiary maybe a little bit less but but we feel that if we built a good organization um our reputation is going to be strong.
- 26:10SPEAKER_04: Sure and um and we see and we see that we see patients coming from a a wider geographic area than than ever before.
- 26:18SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 26:19SPEAKER_04: And even kind of leading into that item is the the last piece of our transformation discussion was on us unveiling the announcement that we're opening in cooperation with Springfoot Clinic a regional oncology center.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: And that's where I was waiting to hear that and that's that's huge.
- 26:34SPEAKER_04: And and so the the idea behind that is a Springfoot Clinic we're the first location that they're working with to bring that cancer care out to the rural environment in this way.
- 26:46SPEAKER_04: And we're very excited about it.
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: You know, cancer touches so many lives so many individuals and um the idea that we can help provide access to the type of care that will keep you off the road and keep you close to your support I think is is really really important.
- 27:02SPEAKER_04: So we're very excited about that announcement that we made on last Tuesday.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: That video you guys shared was very powerful that the uh the um I don't you I don't remember her name uh K.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: Kay you know she works for with you for you guys to she retired from us yes absolutely she was talking about just just talking about it briefly what it it left me with an impact was uh how she was talking about how she was exhausted and her family and having to drive you know over an hour.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: I think it was 90 miles she said from her her place to get care.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: And uh I think that your bed's freed up right and something that the doctor I don't remember his name Dr.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: Gupta Dr.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: Gianoni Gianoni Gianoni yeah and Gupta Dr.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Gupta we're talking about was expanding the chair to get the treatment and he was talking about how you know we don't want to compromise the quality of care that you guys are not going to do that.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: You guys are going to bring that same level of care you know world class to Carlinville and the area.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: It I don't know it's very powerful guys.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: You know thank you.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: Well it was great hearing both Dr.
- 27:59SPEAKER_04: Gupta and Dr.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: Gianoni really talk about the importance of having access to to strong medicine when it comes to oncology the the the truth of the matter is both Dr.
- 28:09SPEAKER_04: Gupta and Dr.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: Gianoni are indeed a world class oncologist.
- 28:13SPEAKER_04: I mean I think that their reputation is much stronger than most people recognize.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: In fact uh Jessica kind of joked uh in a in saying a compliment to to Dr.
- 28:22SPEAKER_04: Gupta hey we're happy to hear that you're top 10% in the country as it relates to patient satisfaction.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: But then she looked over at Dr.
- 28:30SPEAKER_04: Gianoni and said the research shows that Dr.
- 28:33SPEAKER_04: Gianni you're top 1% in the nation for patient satisfaction.
- 28:37SPEAKER_04: So we we know that with the Springfield Clinic oncologists we have a great team uh that's that's coming together there and we're just very focused on providing an outstanding experience for patients in their time of need and having this available uh is going to be crucial to them to do that.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: You want to mention something that that me and Chris were talking about before the podcast even was you know the event last week guys world class world class organization and you know being from real america it's no excuse.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: That's something I try to pride myself in I'm assuming Chris as well you know I mean it's true guys in in trying to bring that there's no excuse you know when when we're trying to do things in our community in our small town you know in our small area as well you know it's no excuse guys we have need to we need to bring those those services and you know whatever products we we have available to us and and try to do our best and I just want to give you guys kudos because I was at that the other day and jokingly we knew a lot of people at the event and I'm sure you guys didn't it was like hey guys but man I tell you what impact was huge and I was actually even at in the the the city thinking forward when you guys were talking about that city it just so happened I was there that day.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah and uh man you guys are just doing great things.
- 29:47SPEAKER_04: Appreciate you saying that and and I I think that we we we echo really what you say there Ryan is we believe that our job is to provide the best care that we possibly can.
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: You know and and we're we're we're focused on that we're focused on that on our inpatient unit we're focused on that in our clinic system in our ER in our lab in our radiology department and helping people know that they can receive the care that they need from our organization when they need it.
- 30:13SPEAKER_08: Absolutely yeah I think we don't allow rule to define us like we're not some people are like a victim of rule.
- 30:20SPEAKER_08: Well we're just a rule you know you can be powerful in rule too and that's what it's going to take to keep our community strong now and into the future.
- 30:30SPEAKER_08: So we can't become a victim of the word rule.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: And that's that's one thing about Carlinville.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: You know, I was born here but then a young age moved away because of my family and then came back almost 30 years ago and that's always the same expression as Carlinville the best thing about it is you're 45 minutes from Springfield, you're 45 minutes from St.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: Louis.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: The worst thing about it is you're from 45 minutes from Springfield, 45 minutes St.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: Louis, right?
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: And that was part of my bit vision of the big dog construction as well is bringing all the amenities of the big cities here.
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: And you at Carmel Hospital have done that.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: You brought that here because healthcare isn't just healthcare a strong rural hospital can become part of the economic social and community infrastructure right you have 400 plus employees now right you're probably the largest employer in McCuba County probably right and then probably take that radius out further as well.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: I mean so that's that just shows the caliber of the culture the culture is king.
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: Yes it has to be and everyone has to believe it from the top down and from the bottom up because if they don't you've got a weak link in that chain and it will work.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: Sure I've I've witnessed that and and I have so to wrap this up just a quick summation what's next?
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: What can the communities feel what's next from Carl Hospital and clinics.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: So the good news is we're just starting the transformative era.
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah exactly Come on you already done yet I think I think those those things of watching two new young physicians develop into the medical community will be huge.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: The the work to uh bring McCupin family practice centers under our umbrella I that's going to be so dynamic and so exciting for for for everybody involved Dr.
- 32:12SPEAKER_04: Court and Dr.
- 32:13SPEAKER_04: Weber and and truly you know I think that we're really focused on how can we be successful in in 2030.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: The the hospital will be going through this period of trying to well if we joke about this hit the easy button everywhere we can whether it's easy for our teammates whether it's easy for our providers whether it's easy for our patients how can we make us the easiest job it doesn't say easy it it says other things.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: So hit my easy button.
- 32:43SPEAKER_04: But I think that's the the key I think that if patients and and providers if if they feel like our organization is easy to work with they're going to want to do that.
- 32:51SPEAKER_04: And so I think as we look to 2030 uh that's what we're gonna see as well as the development of this very exciting oncology center.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: But we're we're definitely looking and we're wanting to see the community support that uh we in a way that I know that they will um but but ultimately I think that uh that's gonna be a wonderful addition to our slate of products I love it I love it so here's the part of the segment that we have it's the community rapid fire right I just have a series of quick questions and it's a top of mind don't overthink them right so Brian this one's first one's for you what's the first thing you think of when you hear the word Carlinville people love it.
- 33:26SPEAKER_08: Tracy, what's one thing about Carlinville Area Hospital that you wish more people knew I know I'm like we're we're just so good at telling our story just really how dynamic we are and what a good team and good culture that we have and the excellent care that we deliver day to day.
- 33:44SPEAKER_08: Like we're not that small rural band-aid station I even hate to say that we are just a dynamic rural hospital.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: And you're not just uh stick a band-aid on it and send them up the road to the bigger hospital your Lutz take care of it.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Obviously every hospital has it if a staff flight needs to come in they're gonna come in and take where those servers are but you guys keep increasing what you can on this I love it.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: Brian back to you what's one word you'd use to describe the hospital team amazing Tracy's like why is he getting one word answer Tracy what's the most exciting part of the new era?
- 34:16SPEAKER_08: What we can do breaking out of what we can't do and what we can do.
- 34:21SPEAKER_08: Awesome.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: Okay Brian what's one thing you believe every rural community needs to thrive a vision.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah where where are you headed if you can't if you can't look forward vision when I teach sessions when I teach when I coach bits coaching when I'm working with the CEO classes and stuff vision is what future success looks like plain the simplest form of that it's what future success looks like.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: So love it.
- 34:44SPEAKER_08: I appreciate that Tracy what's the biggest opportunity you see for Carlinville for Carlinville the town for the I think just the strength of the overall community and the support that the community gives to one another and their businesses, schools, each other.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: Brian what keeps you excited about coming to work every day?
- 35:02SPEAKER_04: Oh my gosh I I mean the the list is is unending I mean if you're a 20 year hospital CEO you just it's so special to be in a place that has so many opportunities.
- 35:14SPEAKER_04: I mean there are so many directions that this organization could go.
- 35:18SPEAKER_04: I mean we're still just tapping the surface of it I mean it it is exciting every every day.
- 35:23SPEAKER_04: I mean it's it's very interesting.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: Subpart A question do you see this as your retirement CEO position?
- 35:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah wow that's I know it's not up to you know I know it's up to you but there's a lot to there's a lot to be said.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: Moving on last question Tracy if you could tell every person we we have we have so much work to do.
- 35:46SPEAKER_04: Yes we have so much work to do and I I think that is absolutely the project is nowhere near done labor of love.
- 35:54SPEAKER_04: It absolutely is I there are so many not good places and and this is an incredibly great place.
- 36:01SPEAKER_04: So for me I think that we're entering this new era and I'm proud to be describing this new era of hey here's where I think we can go and it's it's exciting to me.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: Good period good I love it.
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: Thank you for answering that didn't want to put you in the hot seat but I'm gonna put you in the hot seat here.
- 36:19SPEAKER_03: Like I tell people be prepared to be uncomfortable but that's okay.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: So last question Tracy if you could tell every person in the community one thing about the future of healthcare in Carlville what would it be?
- 36:29SPEAKER_08: That you can get world class state of the art care right here at Carlinville Area Hospital.
- 36:35SPEAKER_08: Awesome.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: All right Brian Ryan Tracy this has been very informative I hope it was fun too we try to keep it light we try to keep you know I'm not a serious guy.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Sometimes I can be but I'm not a serious guy.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: But I'm gonna give a little monologue here on our outro on this but any final words from either one of you guys want to no great really thank you for the opportunity I I think that you know maybe what I would say to uh the residents of Carl that listens to your podcast, you know, pay attention to what the hospital is doing because I think that you know I had a chance to present to some some other folks the other day and it's just very exciting to them to see a hospital like ours thriving.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: And so you know we want to be your hospital and so maybe pay attention to what we're up to and I I hope you'll we'll be satisfied with where where that is.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: I love that because our our last podcast we dropped on the community was about Carlinville Chamber.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: Sure and what the chamber's doing right integral in and how other chambers should model that.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: And this is a prime example same thing.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: A lot of good things are happening right here in Carlinville in the heart of McCupin County and McCupin County being in central Illinois middle of the Midwest.
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: Small small town America yeah right that's why we have this community segment right so Brian Tracy I appreciate you guys coming in today I think this conversation really captures what the community segment is supposed to be about because when we say designing and building the Midwest one community at a time we're talking about much more than construction.
- 38:02SPEAKER_03: We're talking about the infrastructure that makes a community worth living in we're talking about businesses we're talking about schools organizations families and we're talking about healthcare because you can build beautiful homes you can build successful businesses and you can build incredible downtowns, which we have one, but if you want a community to thrive for generations, you have to build the foundation underneath of it all and healthcare is a huge part of that foundation.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: We're hearing from Brian and Tracy today that Carnival Area Hospital isn't simply looking at where rural healthcare has been, they're looking at where it can go, the vision that the hospital has and the board and the executive team and every employee or team member they're part of that.
- 38:43SPEAKER_03: And we love that.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: And they're looking at how it can bring care closer to home and that's so crucial.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: And how to attract great healthcare professionals, which you're doing how to invest technology and services that helps the community and how to create opportunities for their team members and ultimately how to make sure the people who live in our rural communities have access to the care they deserve.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: And that makes today's conversation so important.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: The new era isn't just about the hospital it's about our community and communities.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: And I want to make sure that's crucial communities.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: It's about the families who live here today and about the families who will call this area their home 10, 20, 30 years from now.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: So to everyone listening here, here's our challenge, right?
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: We always throw out a challenge pay attention to what's happening in your community because we know that we have listeners and followers all across the United States and we have some around the world which is pretty exciting.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: We love that too.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: So support the organizations that are investing in it.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: Support the businesses that employ your neighbors support the people who are creating opportunities.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: And when you see an organization like the Carl Area Hospital make an investment in the future for your community show up and support it because communities don't become great by accident.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: They're built by people who care enough to invest in them.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: Huge thank you to Brian and Tracy for coming out from the Carlinville Area Hospital you guys have a busy schedule I know and and just hopping on our little podcast we love this and appreciate that for joining us.
