- 0:08Hey, welcome to another exciting episode of Two Shot Tuesday.
- 0:12My name is Jason Riley, with me as always, Barry T Nixon.
- 0:17And you know the only thing I can say about my friend.
- 0:20Of all the souls I have encountered on my travels, his
- 0:23is the most. Human.
- 0:25Thank you. Done.
- 0:28Yeah, pulled that out, which is nice.
- 0:29And everyone knows most people know where that's from.
- 0:32Yeah, that's from 2, from 2 movies, right?
- 0:34Two. Well, it was at the end of two,
- 0:36and then they used it again at the beginning of three for those
- 0:40who wouldn't see 2. Yeah, because it was such a
- 0:42moving tribute. And it was.
- 0:43It's summarized because you really couldn't see 3 without
- 0:47his having seen two. I cannot imagine anybody making
- 0:50The Search for Spock their first Star Trek foray because it was
- 0:54such a follow up. It truly was.
- 0:56Yeah, exactly. And then it went directly into
- 0:58that. I think those middle ones,
- 0:59right, 2-3 and four are sort of one story.
- 1:02It's a trilogy. Like it all happens in one
- 1:03afternoon basically. Well, maybe not one afternoon,
- 1:06but it's pretty quick and that's rare.
- 1:07I don't think you ever get that. I can't describe one other like
- 1:12trilogy within a series. I mean Star Wars I guess, but
- 1:16those are three banks of trilogy's.
- 1:18This is like just a rando trilogy in the middle of things.
- 1:20Am I bothering you? Is there anything else you'd
- 1:22like to be doing other than discussing a a a trilogy rammed
- 1:26into? A a series.
- 1:27I feel like we have covered it, but that's cool.
- 1:30OK, great. Just in case people didn't know,
- 1:32was rammed right into a six pack.
- 1:35And it's like the other one. There's no connection like 1-5
- 1:39and six are all standalone adventures.
- 1:41Yeah, they just kind of fly off. You're just happening to be
- 1:43there. But anyway, that's not what we
- 1:45were originally going to talk about in the show, which
- 1:47happened. Sometimes we go into different
- 1:50corners of what we might want to cover, but what always brings us
- 1:54back is our format. And we do two shots in every
- 1:59episode, hence the name. Two shot Tuesday.
- 2:01Barry, what have you got tonight?
- 2:03Well, Jay, it's a clean, sober show for me tonight.
- 2:07I'm hitting the iron immediately following this record, so I'm
- 2:11going to be having a little of Godzilla free workout.
- 2:14All right, and you've inspired me.
- 2:16I'm also going to hit a workout immediately after the show.
- 2:20And so I'm starting with water with ice cubes in it too.
- 2:23In fact, from my new Brita that actually gets rid of lead, it's
- 2:27I've upgraded to the Brita 2.0 or something and it takes lead
- 2:31out of water. I have old lead pipes, so it's
- 2:34something that we need to be aware of.
- 2:35So I thought, you know, since I was upgrading my water pitcher
- 2:37anyway, why not go with the lead removal system?
- 2:41Seems like a perfect choice. Jay, here's to you.
- 2:46I'm not crazy about the flavor. I have touched on that before.
- 2:49This will not be a repurchase. It gives you some gas, but it
- 2:52just says I don't mean gas below the equator, I mean energy.
- 2:55And but it's just the flavors. It's not really there anyway.
- 2:58OK, let's get to it. Jay, we have a whole bunch of
- 3:01stuff to talk about. Maybe we should start with what
- 3:04just happened at the time of this record, a mere 72, or maybe
- 3:08it's now 96 hours ago. At the time of this record, we
- 3:11went and supported a very dear friend of ours, friend of ours,
- 3:13friend of the show, and now not only a performer but a
- 3:17playwright, Laurie Carruthers. Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:20It was. We got to see her debut of yeah,
- 3:23it's the first like long form play that we've seen her do,
- 3:27which it like stretched 2 hours with an intermission.
- 3:30Like that is a serious play. And she pulled it off.
- 3:34It was incredible. It let's just get that out of
- 3:36the way. Incredible.
- 3:38And don't just take our word for it.
- 3:39Sold out run. Basically there was like maybe a
- 3:42seat or two available and from the theater that they were at
- 3:45the Red Sandcastle Theater here in Toronto, they were saying
- 3:47that what she was able to bring in in terms of crowd was kind of
- 3:51and they, they don't see that kind of crowd at the Red
- 3:53Sandcastle Theater. So kudos to Laurie for being
- 3:56able to pack all of the houses for what seemed to be a probably
- 3:59around a six or seven show run over the course of the May long
- 4:03weekend. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:04You're exactly right. And it was really well written.
- 4:06There was a lot of jokes in there and I I forgot that Laurie
- 4:09really does have this talent for writing jokes.
- 4:11I mean, we knew. I mean, I just.
- 4:14She was in our improv troupe. You remember that right, Barry?
- 4:16Well, I do remember that, but that was like, 25 years ago.
- 4:19To still have that, you know, that muscle that you can flex
- 4:22and then, you know, put something on, you know,
- 4:24something live on stage is pretty cool.
- 4:26Yeah. I enjoyed it.
- 4:27Now, we should also touch on the fact that we I I don't think we
- 4:30were late to the theater, by the way.
- 4:32We were there at least 10 minutes before the curtain.
- 4:34Yeah. But Jay and I had the pleasure
- 4:37of sitting literally in the front row and now at the Red Red
- 4:41Castle, Red Sand Castle Theater. Is that what it is, Jay?
- 4:44That's it. It is a little more snug.
- 4:47So literally front row is almost in the show, Jay.
- 4:51I mean, we had a little bit of a snicker about that, but it was
- 4:54in like there was nowhere to turn to not be watching the
- 4:58play. Like you were literally, it was
- 5:00like wearing an Oculus Rift. It was all around you.
- 5:02There was nowhere to look. You were just looking at the
- 5:05action. What?
- 5:05Do you think I loved it because it was such an intimate show?
- 5:09There were four actors on stage and it was great to be a part of
- 5:12it. In fact, the, the one thing that
- 5:13I was very focused on was not having to pee during the show
- 5:17because the washroom was in fact one of the doors that the actors
- 5:20would be coming out. If you would have had to go on
- 5:22stage and be in the show, if you had to use the washroom during
- 5:25the show, which always, as soon as I see that, I immediately
- 5:27have to pee. So that's why I got a little
- 5:29quiet before the show started when you were sort of like,
- 5:32we're in the front row. We're in the front row.
- 5:34And I was like, yeah, yeah, I, I just don't want to have to pee.
- 5:37And so that was, that was me being aware of it.
- 5:40Yeah. Now I don't tell you all these
- 5:42things. I just kind of.
- 5:43You should. I well, I assume maybe you're
- 5:44going to pick up on the cues you never do.
- 5:46And it's great because then you're like, is it a great J?
- 5:49We're in the front row. And then I'd be like, yeah, I
- 5:52just let's, let's just get to. This point I'm just not in tune
- 5:55with your urinary cycles, but I should be more into now I know
- 5:59if we ever go to a show again where there's a restroom on the
- 6:02stage, I'm going to know immediately that Jay's got to
- 6:04use it. That's what I'm thinking of
- 6:06exactly. I'm thinking of should I go, how
- 6:08much time do I have before the show starts?
- 6:10Otherwise, is there an intermission?
- 6:12I'm working all this. I'm doing a lot of math in my
- 6:14head at the same time that I'm enjoying my time with you.
- 6:17So we got to see the show. 2 hours.
- 6:20Incredible. Flew by.
- 6:21Really flew by. It was quite entertaining.
- 6:24And yeah, then we were able to hang out with her briefly.
- 6:29My friend Stacy, who was in the show, you got to meet and.
- 6:33Just talk about very nice lady. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:35And we went to the ROI in this was all happening in my old hood
- 6:39of Riverside, Leslieville. We started at prohibition.
- 6:42We had our pre drinks there and some food.
- 6:45Very nice. Then we got to the play and then
- 6:47we went to the ROI afterwards. And then at that point, as you
- 6:51duly noted, my tank had run dry. So there was just a certain
- 6:55point when it was like, I'm leaving now, you're welcome to
- 6:58stay. I'm.
- 6:58And then you were like, no, no, I'm going to leave now.
- 7:00And we went to leave and then you're like, maybe we should
- 7:02walk for a bit. I was like, that's not going to
- 7:04happen. It's just time to it's time to
- 7:06go. And so, yeah, I, you know, I,
- 7:08you're used to hanging out with me.
- 7:09There's just a certain time when the when the tank runs the.
- 7:12Battery's done. The battery's done and it's time
- 7:15to time to head out. So I did that and you of course
- 7:17had an entire weekend full of visitors and, well, visitor, and
- 7:21that was great. Visitor, Yeah.
- 7:22Yeah. So you got to do that?
- 7:24Yeah. How was that?
- 7:24No, it was really good. The one thing I also enjoyed
- 7:27about the intermission on Laurie's play is that I was able
- 7:30to go out there and have myself a marijuana cigarette,
- 7:33unbeknownst to me that a lot of it was wafting into the theater.
- 7:36But you know what? That made for a much more lively
- 7:39second-half. I don't know whether you picked
- 7:40up on it. Everyone was a lot looser,
- 7:43including me. We all had a definite waft of
- 7:46the of the berries. Naughty weed that was.
- 7:50Yeah, the devil's lettuce was being served up at half time,
- 7:53baby. All around you.
- 7:55Yeah, all around you and you were just getting enveloped.
- 7:58It was like you didn't get away from me fogging.
- 8:00It was going on. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:02Because you're talking to me like an old timey, like a 90s
- 8:05detective movie with a cigarette, and you're talking to
- 8:07me. But it's weed and it's, it's
- 8:09always coming at me. Like, yeah, at me.
- 8:12It's coming out of everywhere. Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 8:14So anyway, that was really fun and I will say we should before
- 8:18we move on Prohibition, we both had the brisket sandwich without
- 8:22the coleslaw and I got to tell you, with the crispy onions,
- 8:25that was a winner. So shout out to Prohibition.
- 8:27Enter my buddy Rich Koh, who goes there frequently and is the
- 8:31one who recommended it. Rich, you were right on the
- 8:33money, all right. Well done, Rich.
- 8:35Hey, let's do celebrate that with shot #2 I think you've got
- 8:39the now, Gene. Yep.
- 8:41Continuing to sip on the Godzilla pre workout.
- 8:44Like I said, good energy, not so great flavor.
- 8:47Will not be purchasing again. Jay, how are you enjoying your
- 8:49lead Free water? Fantastic.
- 8:52Yeah, it's all the tastes different you don't want.
- 8:54Cheers. Cheers.
- 8:58Before we move on, if I can just say one quick thing, Jay.
- 9:00Sure you can. I want to just preview our
- 9:03There's an upcoming episode, the time of this recording.
- 9:05Rob Peetz, the movie guy, will be returning to talk about The
- 9:08Mandalorian and Grogu at the time of this recording.
- 9:11This is just days away. I'm super excited.
- 9:14You've seen the trailer, right? Yes.
- 9:15OK. Where?
- 9:16Where's your excitement level for this movie?
- 9:19I mean, it's there. I'm not so excited about it
- 9:22because it was ATV show and so now it's like, I feel like we've
- 9:25bolted on a movie like Star Trek The Next Generation.
- 9:28Now we bolted on a movie. So I'm less excited because of
- 9:32that because it's like X-Files TV show.
- 9:36Then we tag on a movie. So it feels like an extension of
- 9:39something that should be on TV that is now been turned into a
- 9:42movie. And I get why they're doing it.
- 9:44They're trying to drive people back to the theaters, are trying
- 9:46to make more money with less content.
- 9:49And so that's what they're doing.
- 9:50So I don't want to burst your bubble.
- 9:51I'm sure it's going to be fantastic.
- 9:53I feel like it's going to be the best.
- 9:54It will be as a good episode. I think the movie guy, Rob Peetz
- 9:57is going to come back and say I've seen better episodes of the
- 9:59show. That's my prediction because
- 10:02they always, and again, this is an early prediction, they always
- 10:05try to do too much in those movies.
- 10:07Star Trek Generations was they tried to do too much and it was
- 10:10lesser for it than say the final episode of Star Trek The Next
- 10:14Generation in my opinion, in my opinion.
- 10:17So that's what I'm expecting. I'm expecting them to try a lot.
- 10:20I could be wrong, but I think they're going to say and people
- 10:23go, oh, that would have played out nicely as say 4 episodes.
- 10:26I think that I think we'll hear some of that, but the special
- 10:28effects will be great. That's what they'll say.
- 10:31Like that will be great. It's like you've seen it
- 10:33already. I just, that's what I think when
- 10:34I hear TV show that bolts on a movie at the end.
- 10:37So what do you think? Would you rather the other way
- 10:40around? Like would you rather a movie
- 10:42become ATV series? Would you be more excited about
- 10:44the TV series if it was first to film?
- 10:47Yes, I would absolutely, because I think it was envisioned as a
- 10:50cinematic feat and then it and then it's either so strong that
- 10:55the story can carry on as a series like it can.
- 10:58Then like Stargate was that I never saw Stargate the movie.
- 11:01I didn't really watch Stargate, the series, so probably not the
- 11:04best thing, but I think a series that becomes or a movie kicks
- 11:08off of the movie and they're like, hey, this has got some
- 11:09legs, let's see if we can extend this out.
- 11:12That's great. Ferris Bueller's Day Off was
- 11:14actually became a TV series called Ferris Bueller.
- 11:17Did you know that with Jennifer Aniston was in it?
- 11:19And I didn't know that, but that was obviously quite short lived.
- 11:21Yeah, those I don't love so much where they adapt.
- 11:24That was done in the 80s a lot where they took a movie and they
- 11:26would adapt it to a TV. Series.
- 11:27You told me that they did that with Uncle Buck.
- 11:29Yeah, where the parents died and they just lived with Uncle Buck,
- 11:32who was that comedian who you would recognize in a second.
- 11:35And it was, but it was a really tough premise to, to launch a
- 11:39comedy, a situation comedy out of.
- 11:42But MASH did that very successfully.
- 11:44The movie that became the TV series.
- 11:46Yeah, Battlestar Galactica as well.
- 11:48Went the other way, it was like the pilot was packaged into ATV
- 11:52series or sorry, the pilot was packaged into a movie so it was
- 11:55like the first 3 episodes. So I don't think that was
- 11:57correct. I think that was to cash in on
- 11:58the popularity of the series or something.
- 12:02Yeah. So I don't know, like I'm sure
- 12:04it'll be great. Like you said correctly, every
- 12:06season of the Mandalorians been really good.
- 12:08You love the I've loved. The setup, yeah, I like that
- 12:10too. Yeah, so now you're just sitting
- 12:13in a theater and it's going to be condensed into two hours or
- 12:17maybe 220. I wonder how long it's going to
- 12:19be. What's the runtime do you know?
- 12:20I don't know, this one, I'm not too.
- 12:22I don't care about the runtime for this one, to be honest with
- 12:24you, Jay. I'm looking forward to just
- 12:26getting back into the world of Star Wars, but more importantly
- 12:28with the Mandalorian and Grogu off on an adventure because I do
- 12:32like this combination. These two characters are great.
- 12:34That little Yoda character is adorable and just the whole
- 12:38dynamic is a lot of fun. It's nice to not see Skywalker's
- 12:42and every Star Wars story. Like do we have to know?
- 12:45It's nice to actually get some new blood in there.
- 12:47Yeah, though he was in The Mandalorian, the series Luke
- 12:51Skywalker. Well, that's true, but he it
- 12:53wasn't about him, like, you know what I mean?
- 12:55No, he. Just showed up.
- 12:56The universal doesn't revolve around him for once.
- 12:59Yeah, which is kind of good. Did you ever see Andor?
- 13:02I did, I I really enjoyed that as well.
- 13:05I, I don't think I saw the last season though.
- 13:07I saw the one where he was like imprisoned on that Imperial
- 13:11prison or whatever. Yeah.
- 13:12And that was incredible in the escape and all that.
- 13:15But I don't I don't recall seeing them.
- 13:16That one, the second season, if you have a chance to, I would
- 13:19watch that. That connects directly, directly
- 13:21into Rogue One, which was one of my amazing Star Wars movies.
- 13:24Yeah, yeah. And stand on not a Skywalker
- 13:27insight, I don't believe, if I'm correct.
- 13:29Well, I guess if you count Princess Leia at the very end of
- 13:32it. That's true.
- 13:33Yeah, and she's sort of Skywalker adjacent, but at the
- 13:36time she didn't know she hadn't done her ancestry DNA.
- 13:40No, she hadn't check, thank goodness.
- 13:43Before we go, can I? How about we do a RIP from the
- 13:46headlines? Let's do that before we go, All
- 13:48right? Yeah.
- 13:49I've got, it's kind of fun. Yeah, let's do that.
- 13:51I'm going to open this up. You've gone to the effort of
- 13:54sending me some. I'm going to scroll on through.
- 13:56I don't know what we got. We got we texted quite a bit
- 13:59after that. So here we go.
- 14:00How about this extra? Speaking of exercise, 5 minutes
- 14:04of exercise a day could help millions of people live longer.
- 14:08Barry, I would assume that's true.
- 14:09I want to believe it, Yeah. Just like you were talking about
- 14:12X-Files earlier, Fox Mulder. I want to believe.
- 14:15I want to believe. You want to believe that just 5
- 14:17minutes a day can help people live longer and be helpful.
- 14:20Yeah, yeah, 5 minutes of exercise a day.
- 14:22And this person in the picture is running across a bridge.
- 14:25So I imagine that's a good, good way to do it.
- 14:27Run across as many bridges as you can because it bridges you
- 14:30from one place to another. That's how you, that's how you
- 14:33live longer. I think is continuing your
- 14:35lifespan is all about just making it to that next step,
- 14:38that next step, that next step. So perhaps these 5 minutes teach
- 14:40you in increments how you make it to that next step, because
- 14:43then at some point, you just kind of stop, you take that last
- 14:46step and you go, that's it for me.
- 14:48So I guess you do, and hopefully there's not a grave waiting for
- 14:51you at the end of that last step.
- 14:53Well, there is for us all, but that's.
- 14:54Eventually. That's what I'm saying.
- 14:57So this sort of teaches you to just go a little further, a
- 14:59little further, a little further.
- 15:00And maybe at some point you just you forget to take that last
- 15:03step and you just keep going. And then you're 300 years old.
- 15:06Wouldn't that be something? Speaking of going a little
- 15:08further, you've gone a little further with your home gym
- 15:11setup. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:12Thank you. Yes, I'm you're working out
- 15:14tonight. That inspired me.
- 15:16So executive producer Aldo Roma and I use the long weekend,
- 15:19which we're just coming out of here at the Two Shot Studios and
- 15:23all across Canada to put together, put back together our
- 15:26basement. 18 months ago, we stripped everything out.
- 15:28Just after Christmas 2024, we stripped everything out.
- 15:32We went right down to the bare walls and we started to put
- 15:34things back in just just, it's amazing what you can take out of
- 15:38a basement. And so now we've got one room,
- 15:40which is going to be part workout area, part TV, lounging
- 15:43area. And so I've MU is able to, we
- 15:46got the carpet down there, we got the pot lights in, we've got
- 15:48the the walls up. And I was able to bring all of
- 15:52the equipment that was right next to me here in the office
- 15:54finally back downstairs and I have space to work out.
- 15:57And so I'm looking forward to getting my routine going again
- 16:00without feeling like I'm in cramped quarters.
- 16:02Yeah. So all that's fantastic.
- 16:04I mean, you're a big man. You take up a lot of real estate
- 16:06and you need room and especially if you're trying to do, you
- 16:08know, dumbbell pressing your flies or whatever, you need room
- 16:11to stretch. Yeah, and he didn't really have
- 16:13it in the office, although the office is not tiny, but it just
- 16:16it's not as. Conducive, exactly.
- 16:18And and that's it. I like to be able to leave stuff
- 16:21around, have to move everything all the time.
- 16:23So that's nice to have a little bit of space to be able to do
- 16:26that. So I'm going to be focusing in
- 16:27on office workouts and not office workouts on workouts in
- 16:31what we're calling right now the studio downstairs.
- 16:34The studio. I like it.
- 16:35Where we'll be? Well, this is your invitation to
- 16:39join me, to be jacked for all seasons from here on out.
- 16:42Jay, you have all the tools. Perfect.
- 16:45Sounds great. Accepted, just like that.
- 16:48It was accepted before you even said it.
- 16:50I love it, I love it. It's important to inspire each
- 16:52other to do positive things and not just drink 20 beers, which
- 16:55we're good at that. We can do the 20 beers, but we
- 16:58also, you know, can nudge each other along with positive
- 17:01things. Well, Jay, I don't know about
