- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Conspiracy The Show with your hosts Adam Todd
- 0:16Speaker 1: Brown and Connor mcspatn.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Hey, everybody, welcome to Conspiracy the Show. I'm Adam Todd Brown,
- 0:35Speaker 2: I'm Conor mcspad. We're in the new studio.
- 0:38Speaker 3: We are. I love the esthetic in here. Is it's
- 0:41Speaker 3: because you get a very un pops vibe.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah. It is a fucking party room, for sure.
- 0:46Speaker 3: It is. Yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 2: As soon as I was done with it, I was like,
- 0:49Speaker 2: I want to clear all the studio ship out and
- 0:51Speaker 2: just put a couch up here.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Oh absolutely, Yeah, you want to just like smoke up here,
- 0:54Speaker 3: you know.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it would be so much better for that.
- 0:56Speaker 3: It's it's just professional enough with just enough like kitchen
- 1:00Speaker 3: accoutremawe scatters around, you know. Yeah, the iron giant in
- 1:03Speaker 3: the corners, it's kind of understated as opposed to where
- 1:05Speaker 3: I feel like it dominated the old space. You know,
- 1:07Speaker 3: we get the nine to eleven. Thank you for turning
- 1:10Speaker 3: that on.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's supposed to be a topic board, but I
- 1:12Speaker 2: just keep forgetting to update it before we record. So
- 1:15Speaker 2: this should say Art Bell, which would be kind of
- 1:18Speaker 2: a nice tribute to Art Bell the way recently. Yeah,
- 1:21Speaker 2: his name and flashing lights.
- 1:22Speaker 3: On the video or whatever. But it just says nine
- 1:24Speaker 3: to eleven. So every thumbnail is going to look like, Wow,
- 1:27Speaker 3: these guys are really on this nine to eleven thing.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I mean sixty episodes.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Wow, someday I'll start updating it.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And yeah, the Iron Giant, if he looks different, he's
- 1:37Speaker 2: I cut him off at the knees.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Oh you did. I didn't actually folded him, right.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I didn't actually cut it, but it's folded so when
- 1:43Speaker 2: we live stream you can have him in frame. You
- 1:46Speaker 2: can see his head instead of his crotch. It's a
- 1:48Speaker 2: sacrifice he made. Yeah, for the betterment of the network.
- 1:52Speaker 3: He did that for us. You know, he's he's kaepernicking it.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Iron Giant is taking a knee for the on Pops
- 1:58Speaker 3: video framing exactly.
- 2:01Speaker 2: So this is the last episode of Conspiracy Theorist month.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yeah, give better, no conspiracy Theorists. Yeah, we are being
- 2:08Speaker 3: paying homage Droy predecessors.
- 2:10Speaker 2: We're finishing strong with one of the fucking pioneers.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Yeah. Really like the like the grand Master Flash and
- 2:17Speaker 3: the Furious Five of conspiracy Theorists.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And also one of the more mainstream conspiracy theorists because
- 2:22Speaker 2: his ship was just we're talking about Art Bell. Yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 2: and his show was just on AM radio for all
- 2:28Speaker 2: the world to hear.
- 2:29Speaker 3: It's fun and it's great if you like, if you're
- 2:31Speaker 3: if you're driving back late in the night in the
- 2:32Speaker 3: middle of nowhere, you're tired of everything in your iPod,
- 2:34Speaker 3: just fine, look up when we're Coast to Coast AM
- 2:36Speaker 3: is it's country wide and it's it's just good ass
- 2:39Speaker 3: late night drive entertainment. Because even now the new guy,
- 2:42Speaker 3: George Nori, who I think does a nice job, it's y.
- 2:44Speaker 3: He just humors everybody. I've really I think I've heard
- 2:48Speaker 3: him snap and call somebody ridiculous once, you know, and
- 2:51Speaker 3: I've listened to probably two hundred hours of Coast to
- 2:54Speaker 3: Coast AM over the AARs and it's just it's just
- 2:57Speaker 3: nice for like, yeah, and tell me more about the
- 3:00Speaker 3: guy lasers, you know.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it's a thing that it's a point that
- 3:04Speaker 2: comes up in this episode, and it's one of the
- 3:07Speaker 2: criticisms of Art Bell and Coast to Coast is that
- 3:11Speaker 2: he wasn't critical enough of these people.
- 3:13Speaker 3: And I mean that is he's like Joe Rogan for
- 3:16Speaker 3: truck drivers. Yeah, it's kind of what he was.
- 3:18Speaker 2: You know, this is a quote on that very subject
- 3:21Speaker 2: from a guy named Michael Powell, a writer for the
- 3:25Speaker 2: Outline dot com, and he wrote an article about Art
- 3:30Speaker 2: Bell and this is this was written after Art Bell died.
- 3:34Speaker 2: And this is a quote like Orson Wells's War of
- 3:37Speaker 2: the World's or the overnight radio pioneer long John Nebel
- 3:41Speaker 2: before him, a long John art Bell amalgamated the ambiance
- 3:46Speaker 2: of the twilight and the crackling, wobbly theater of the
- 3:50Speaker 2: mind quality offered by AM radio to architect an immersive
- 3:55Speaker 2: world that was mysterious, intriguing, a bit foreboding, sometimes unsettling,
- 4:00Speaker 2: and oft an outright absurd, but always with the whimsy
- 4:04Speaker 2: of campy horror or a B movie.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it didn't take itself that seriously, right, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 3: Like there's I didn't name Trevor dust And, a comic
- 4:13Speaker 3: in Bakersfield. I was staying with him like four or
- 4:14Speaker 3: five years ago, tells me this amazing Art Bell start.
- 4:17Speaker 3: I've been trying to find the clip forever. But he's like, yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 3: I'm driving back from a gig, you know, I'm listening
- 4:21Speaker 3: to Coast to Coast. You know, Art Bell is on
- 4:23Speaker 3: and this truck driver calls in and he's like, I
- 4:27Speaker 3: think I saw a ghost start And Art's like, okay,
- 4:29Speaker 3: go on, where did you see it. He's like, well,
- 4:30Speaker 3: he was driving him a truck goes popped up in
- 4:33Speaker 3: the middle of the road, went under the wheels, so
- 4:35Speaker 3: I almost lost control. And then Art's like, are you
- 4:38Speaker 3: sure you didn't just hit a guy with your truck.
- 4:41Speaker 3: He's like it was a ghost start. Like this is
- 4:43Speaker 3: a guy who's calling into Art Bell to cope with
- 4:45Speaker 3: the fact that he had just committed a hit and run.
- 4:48Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 4:49Speaker 3: It's so fucked up.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the thing about Art Bell. He would
- 4:52Speaker 2: just take the calls who wanted to call in. He
- 4:55Speaker 2: had a dedicated line for people who wanted to talk
- 4:58Speaker 2: about Area fifty one.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Oh y, how great would that be if you just
- 5:01Speaker 3: like I got the eight hundred bucks for the phone
- 5:03Speaker 3: bill every year to just have the uh you know,
- 5:05Speaker 3: the slash five one to one extension. Yeah, that was
- 5:08Speaker 3: a yeah, fucking The great thing about radio is it's
- 5:11Speaker 3: like you listen to like a lot of radio guys
- 5:12Speaker 3: will do a podcast. Now it's like the people calling
- 5:14Speaker 3: in are all their fans. Yeah, But if it was
- 5:17Speaker 3: just whoever happened to fucking pop them on the dial.
- 5:19Speaker 3: You got some weird That's what made like the old
- 5:21Speaker 3: love line shows so good, you know, and now like that,
- 5:23Speaker 3: I feel like we've kind of lost the ability to
- 5:26Speaker 3: have that, and you know, because it's not radio like.
- 5:28Speaker 2: We want to figure out a way to get that back.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know if there is
- 5:32Speaker 3: in terms of just getting randos calling in. Yeah, we
- 5:35Speaker 3: both have voicemail lines and we get people calling in
- 5:37Speaker 3: and the greatest hilarious, but it's like people that listen
- 5:39Speaker 3: to the podcast. Yeah, you know, it's not just like Hi,
- 5:42Speaker 3: my name is Sally. I'm a housewife in the Midwest,
- 5:44Speaker 3: and I really think these jokes you're making about the
- 5:47Speaker 3: you know, the kids in tournament camps are really and
- 5:49Speaker 3: it's like, if you could get some of that, that's
- 5:51Speaker 3: kind of where a lot of.
- 5:52Speaker 2: The magic is with radio. Yeah, we'll figure it out.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yeah, just start making bumper stickers with our phone number
- 5:57Speaker 3: and just put them everywhere, you know.
- 6:00Speaker 2: So Art Bell a little bit about his early life.
- 6:04Speaker 2: He was interested in radio from a young age, became
- 6:06Speaker 2: an amateur radio operator at the age of thirteen, served
- 6:10Speaker 2: in Vietnam as a medic, but also rebelled by creating
- 6:14Speaker 2: a pirate radio station that deliberately played anti war music.
- 6:18Speaker 2: That's fucking great.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fine, said that, what was all? I feel
- 6:22Speaker 3: like there couldn't have been that much anti war music
- 6:24Speaker 3: that it just like we're gonna play Eve of Destruction
- 6:27Speaker 3: and over again the Vietnam era. Oh, the Vietnam area.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I'm thinking he's a lot older for some reason.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah. He stayed in Okinawa after the war, that's not
- 6:37Speaker 2: in Vietnam, and created another radio station where he achieved
- 6:42Speaker 2: a Guinness World Record by remaining solo on the air
- 6:45Speaker 2: for one hundred and sixteen hours.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Dude, I need a cliff bar and a naked juice
- 6:50Speaker 3: after forty five minutes man doing a bad podcast? Can
- 6:53Speaker 3: you imagine broadcasting for one hundred and sixteen hours?
- 6:55Speaker 2: I did the two am to six am stretch of
- 6:58Speaker 2: a twenty four hour podcasting thing once, and even that
- 7:02Speaker 2: I was like, what am I doing? Yeah, like three
- 7:05Speaker 2: o'clock in the morning. Yeah, I shouldn't be doing this.
- 7:08Speaker 2: But he was doing it to raise money to charter
- 7:11Speaker 2: a plane to rescue orphaned Vietnamese children who are stranded
- 7:15Speaker 2: in Saigon.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Damn what guy?
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty fucking great.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that's cool. Usually when you moved to Okinawa after
- 7:21Speaker 3: the war, you're just like, I found out how easy
- 7:23Speaker 3: it is to open a brothel here. I'm gonna be rich.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I think that was our le Ermi's thing. I think
- 7:28Speaker 3: he started like a whorehouse in like something like one
- 7:30Speaker 3: of the day, Yeah, someone somewhere in the Pacific after
- 7:32Speaker 3: after his service or whatever, and then just brought one
- 7:35Speaker 3: of them back. He had like he had married to
- 7:37Speaker 3: that woman, like, you know, until he didn't till he died,
- 7:38Speaker 3: I think.
- 7:39Speaker 2: And then Delah died a beloved hero era. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 7:44Speaker 2: what an amazing story.
- 7:45Speaker 3: He really got out of that, Like like when Indiana
- 7:47Speaker 3: Jones grabs the whip. You know, he's just safe.
- 7:51Speaker 4: You know.
- 7:51Speaker 3: I'm just the toy story guy, not the oh Man.
- 7:54Speaker 3: We gotta find a different guy for the Small Soldiers
- 7:56Speaker 3: mobile game.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Small Soldiers was so fun good. I mean it was
- 8:01Speaker 2: just Gremlins with toys.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I didn't see it for a long last time.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yeah it's Gremlins. Yeah, made by the same person. It's
- 8:07Speaker 2: the same movie. Uh. So Coast to Coast am is
- 8:12Speaker 2: what Art Bell is best known for he recorded at
- 8:16Speaker 2: his private studio on his ranch in Parump.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Oh, I've been to Perump.
- 8:22Speaker 2: In the Nevada Desert. That's the dream man.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Yeah, dude, fucking do it.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Just lived out his days chilling in his house taking
- 8:30Speaker 2: phone calls.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, right when you have enough money. Like
- 8:33Speaker 3: one of the dudes, I forget if it's Kevin Orban
- 8:35Speaker 3: just lives like on an island outside of like the
- 8:38Speaker 3: Oregon somewhere, you know, and he just does the show
- 8:40Speaker 3: from there, and he's just like, yeah, La, traffic's crazy
- 8:42Speaker 3: and he's just like on this fucking weird, most dangerous
- 8:45Speaker 3: game ass private island.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You know.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I would take a fully paid off building in Detroit
- 8:50Speaker 2: at this point if I could just broadcast from there
- 8:54Speaker 2: the rest of my.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Days, Oh dude, that would be that would be very
- 8:56Speaker 3: on brand for you, you know.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah, for sure.
- 8:58Speaker 3: At some point you'd run into eminem at like the
- 9:00Speaker 3: fucking Pink Dot and become friends with him or I
- 9:05Speaker 3: imagine they still have Pink Dott in Detroit. That's how
- 9:06Speaker 3: far back it is.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Yeah, insane clown Posse would probably end up on the podcast.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Yea at some point because like they're gettable, you know.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Yeah, they're gettable, and they're They're one of those groups
- 9:19Speaker 2: where on the surface they seem awful, but also they're
- 9:22Speaker 2: like super anti Trump, They're super.
- 9:25Speaker 3: They're like good dudes.
- 9:26Speaker 4: You know.
- 9:27Speaker 2: It's like they just make terrible music and have awful fans.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike cal Clark, show me this video a fucking
- 9:32Speaker 3: to like a Juggalo and a Slipknot fan, you know,
- 9:35Speaker 3: and it's like, we can't Juggalos and maggots be friends.
- 9:37Speaker 3: And it's like they're like fourteen and talking about how like, yeah,
- 9:40Speaker 3: people pick on me because I I died my hair blunt,
- 9:43Speaker 3: but fuck you, we're about to muse it. And it's
- 9:45Speaker 3: just like the most heartwarming ship in the world. And
- 9:47Speaker 3: you're like, oh, these kids, this really makes you feel
- 9:49Speaker 3: like America's gonna be all right. He was like, yeah,
- 9:50Speaker 3: I watched this like thirty times after Trump won just
- 9:52Speaker 3: to remind myself about the spirit of man.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Oh that's beautiful. Yeah, I just checked that out.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I did Bonkers with a z in Pero and it
- 10:00Speaker 3: was just like one of these like is that a comedy?
- 10:02Speaker 3: Casically in big gass fucking air quotes, and uh, it's
- 10:07Speaker 3: just like one of these like hotel ballrooms that they
- 10:09Speaker 3: just like set up these like uncomfortable ass like the
- 10:12Speaker 3: real realtors of like shit fuck County or meeting here
- 10:15Speaker 3: type chairs and just yeah, you had to go up
- 10:17Speaker 3: cold with no music and just be like hey the
- 10:19Speaker 3: old people, Uh, what's up you guys? Remember when you
- 10:23Speaker 3: used to fuck how this part of it would be weird?
- 10:25Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 10:25Speaker 3: It was the fucking worst.
- 10:27Speaker 2: We should try to do a live pod there. Sometimes
- 10:29Speaker 2: we should do live from Perump.
- 10:31Speaker 3: That'd be funny. They got a Danny's we can make
- 10:33Speaker 3: it happen.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Maybe we could do it at Arn't Bell's place.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Maybe, yeah. Yeah, Like there's so many people that went
- 10:37Speaker 3: to Mark Marin's garage when he sold his house. Do
- 10:39Speaker 3: you see all those pictures?
- 10:40Speaker 2: Oh really?
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 10:40Speaker 3: Yeah, because you could like give a tour of the
- 10:42Speaker 3: house and we just people like I want to go
- 10:43Speaker 3: see the garage, you know.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Yeah. The only house I've wanted to see in LA
- 10:47Speaker 2: when it went on the market was the Low's Police
- 10:49Speaker 2: Murder House.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Oh uh no, similar to that. I honestly it could
- 10:52Speaker 3: be called the Los Felice Murderhouse, Glen Danzig house. I
- 10:55Speaker 3: got to go to Glen Danzig's house. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 10:57Speaker 3: he's that on the market now. I don't know if
- 10:58Speaker 3: it's on the market, but I think you like doesn't
- 11:00Speaker 3: live there. He just kind of owns it or old
- 11:02Speaker 3: pop out every once in a while. But I just
- 11:03Speaker 3: want to go see like where he because it's like
- 11:05Speaker 3: a bungalow. It's like, you know, like we're actually like
- 11:07Speaker 3: a pretty dark like a porn producer would live, you know.
- 11:10Speaker 3: So I just I just want to go pay my respects.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Maybe we'll do a mean Boys in the Driveway or something.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Uh so, yeah, Coast to Coast. He recorded it in
- 11:18Speaker 2: his private studio on his ranch. Sometimes had celebrity guests.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Willie Nelson was on, Leonard d moy was on. I
- 11:25Speaker 2: remember Judah Friedlander was on an episode once.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Oh really, that's just weird. You would feel like he
- 11:30Speaker 3: was not like famous by the time, like when he
- 11:32Speaker 3: was still doing the show, because George Norrey's beenre for
- 11:33Speaker 3: like twenty some years.
- 11:34Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, yeah, George Norri has been on for
- 11:37Speaker 2: a while. Art Bell came back and replaced him briefly.
- 11:39Speaker 2: At one point he jay lenoed him Yeah, no shit,
- 11:42Speaker 2: because he wasn't happy with how political Nori was taking it. Yeah,
- 11:46Speaker 2: they do. Norri's in charge.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Now. When I do listen to Nori, now he'll have
- 11:49Speaker 3: like a guy from Info war Zone a lot like
- 11:51Speaker 3: in the beginning, like he'll do he'll do kind of
- 11:52Speaker 3: like the news of the week. In like the first
- 11:54Speaker 3: fifteen minutes. They'll be like, whoa George, you know, Like
- 11:57Speaker 3: I don't again, I don't get to get the feeling
- 11:59Speaker 3: that George is a bad guy. I think he's just like, well,
- 12:01Speaker 3: what is a Yeah, well maybe maybe the art crisis
- 12:05Speaker 3: actors wild anyway, Like you just everything gets the same
- 12:08Speaker 3: level of like wow, no, no kidding, you can talk
- 12:10Speaker 3: to dead goat, you know, like every single thing brought
- 12:13Speaker 3: to him, he's just like oh wow, yeah, you know,
- 12:15Speaker 3: it's like a good like school therapist where there just
- 12:18Speaker 3: you know, no kid in a hot fucking coat hanger,
- 12:20Speaker 3: like wow, that's crazy, we'll have to talk.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah. Conspiracy theories are just getting so much more divisive now. Yeah,
- 12:26Speaker 2: and they're becoming part of current news.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Like the fun like the Katy Perry is John b
- 12:32Speaker 3: and a Ramsey type fun. Ones that are more or
- 12:33Speaker 3: less harmless are pretty like few and far between.
- 12:36Speaker 2: And now we have no time for that. Yeah.
- 12:38Speaker 3: No, it's all just like, oh, did you know BP
- 12:40Speaker 3: puts a cat shit and you're Nilla Wafers and you're like,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I don't know what the fuck ever?
- 12:45Speaker 4: Man?
- 12:45Speaker 2: During Halloween, they would change the name of the show
- 12:48Speaker 2: to Ghost to Ghost Am.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Like like a like an alt comic on Twitter. Whether
- 12:52Speaker 3: they do the Halloween names all month. I'm afraid to
- 12:54Speaker 3: do that because every once in a while I want
- 12:56Speaker 3: to do a silly Twitter name for some events. But
- 12:58Speaker 3: I'm like, what if I die and for the my life,
- 13:00Speaker 3: my Twitter is a Connor mcspooky, you.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Know, like.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Point.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I've never changed mine. Mine has always said Adam
- 13:07Speaker 2: Todd Brown me neither. Yeah, maybe someday, but probably not.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Probably not. No, I don't, I don't know. I don't
- 13:13Speaker 3: even want to put like my credits in my bio
- 13:14Speaker 3: because I feel like that looks tacky, you know.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:16Speaker 3: I have some publications just for people, like know, like
- 13:19Speaker 3: you know, I.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Have some but just because I'm verified and I want
- 13:22Speaker 2: people to understand why. Yeah yeah yeah so and also
- 13:26Speaker 2: you know, just in case anyone wants to hit me
- 13:29Speaker 2: up about writing. Yeah, yeah, they know, what's the thing
- 13:31Speaker 2: I do? Yeah, but no, one wants to hit me
- 13:34Speaker 2: up about writing. That's why I do these podcasts.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I don't know about that. If anyone, if anyone listening,
- 13:39Speaker 3: can give me verified. I've applied a few times and
- 13:41Speaker 3: I've been been had roundly rebuffed.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Oh when was the last time you applied, Maybe like
- 13:45Speaker 2: a year ago. Yeah, I feel like you could get
- 13:48Speaker 2: on now.
- 13:48Speaker 3: I've had like some big accounts steal my shit, and
- 13:50Speaker 3: apparently that's a good way to get verified. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 13:53Speaker 3: so I might be able to be like, hey, you know, yeah,
- 13:55Speaker 3: because so we had Andrew pocon Did you see his
- 13:58Speaker 3: whole thing with Draymond Green, No, because he okay, So
- 14:01Speaker 3: he tweeted a joke about like, I hope Draymond Green
- 14:03Speaker 3: gets shot in the face because he was I guess
- 14:05Speaker 3: hitting people in the face, and Charli's Barkley made some
- 14:06Speaker 3: joke about it. So it made some like little like
- 14:07Speaker 3: angry comparison after whatever basketball team lost, and he's pissed
- 14:11Speaker 3: off about it, and then he just like got fucking
- 14:13Speaker 3: lit up like he had to lead his account. Draymond
- 14:16Speaker 3: talked about it in the press conference. Dreamond Green's mom
- 14:18Speaker 3: was tweeting at him, it's like death threats on death
- 14:21Speaker 3: threats on death threats, and he's and I was like what.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I was like what it was? What were you verified
- 14:24Speaker 3: for it? And he's like, oh yeah, fuck, Jerry just stole
- 14:25Speaker 3: one of my tweets and I got verified And it
- 14:28Speaker 3: was that easy. I could have done this shit when
- 14:29Speaker 3: George de kay was sharing my Obama memes.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Like oh yeah for sure.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Yeah. So anyway back to art Bell, Ghost to Ghost Dam.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Back to art Bell, Ghost to Ghost.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Best adult swim show in my opinion.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I fucking loved Space Ghost Coast to Coast.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Oh, I watched a little bit of it was fun.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Oh, it was amazing. One of his most famous episodes,
- 14:47Speaker 2: Art Bell's not Space Ghost was an interview with a
- 14:50Speaker 2: guy named Madman Markham, who claimed that.
- 14:53Speaker 3: It sounds like a like the best Delta blues player.
- 14:55Speaker 3: You know exactly mad Man Markham. Did you know hear
- 14:58Speaker 3: the train to come in and wow, chilling.
- 15:01Speaker 2: But he actually built the time machine and in the
- 15:05Speaker 2: episode we Can't Play. I couldn't find any good clips
- 15:08Speaker 2: from it, but it's absolutely one of art Bell's most
- 15:10Speaker 2: famous episodes. But the entire thing is online. It's like
- 15:14Speaker 2: forty five minutes long and He talks to Bell about
- 15:19Speaker 2: the process of making the time machine and how his
- 15:22Speaker 2: attempts to create the time machine created power interruptions around
- 15:26Speaker 2: Kansas City. The machine was created using six power transformers
- 15:31Speaker 2: that mark them stole and for which he was arrested
- 15:35Speaker 2: on felony charges.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I like the dude that is so confident that his
- 15:39Speaker 3: time machine not not. The governments are like the fucking
- 15:42Speaker 3: that Nick Nikola Tesla's lost designs, the one that he
- 15:45Speaker 3: a guy who goes by the name Madman thought of that.
- 15:47Speaker 3: He's like, I will risk grand theft, you know, to
- 15:51Speaker 3: make this thing happen. I know the schematics are correct.
- 15:55Speaker 2: And to put forth a theory like that and then
- 15:57Speaker 2: call yourself madman, it's like, do you want no one
- 16:01Speaker 2: to believe you? Oh yeah, for sure. You call yourself
- 16:04Speaker 2: Chuck or something.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Yeah, that's like being a trauma therapist and a wife beater.
- 16:08Speaker 3: It's just a bad aesthetic, look like, Yeah, a trustworthy
- 16:13Speaker 3: academic name like Chuck.
- 16:17Speaker 2: It would be better than Madman.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Do you feel like a guy with the monosyllabic name
- 16:20Speaker 3: is more trustworthy? You know?
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, yeah, you don't want a real anytime someone's
- 16:26Speaker 2: trying to give you some information and they have a
- 16:28Speaker 2: really flowery name. Yeah it's all right, all right, don't
- 16:31Speaker 2: get your real name, sir.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, Skyler. You know, but if it's like Bob
- 16:36Speaker 3: told me that this has happened, like.
- 16:38Speaker 2: There's no fucking crazy Bob's Yeah.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Yeah, unless he's got a car dealership somewhere in the Midwest.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Crazy Bob's Auto Sunday Sunday Sunday.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Dude, I got my car got sucked up in Oklahoma
- 16:49Speaker 3: City and I had to go take it in to
- 16:50Speaker 3: get like a fuel pump replaced. And I remember like thinking, like, dude,
- 16:53Speaker 3: I'm going to get a gouge so hard. I got
- 16:54Speaker 3: California plates, I got the Nazi haircut, so I literally
- 16:57Speaker 3: put on like my dirtiest jeans. I had my Timberland
- 16:59Speaker 3: boots with me, you know. I got like just like
- 17:00Speaker 3: a wife beater. I literally went in with like a
- 17:02Speaker 3: hat on, like a dirty like baseball cap I found,
- 17:05Speaker 3: and I just was like doing a fake accent, like yeah,
- 17:08Speaker 3: I'm a damn sister borrowed the like I just was
- 17:10Speaker 3: like trying to like sound cool, and I was like, yeah,
- 17:13Speaker 3: I think it's the fuel pump. I'd do it myself,
- 17:15Speaker 3: but I gotta I gotta go haul the load or whatever.
- 17:19Speaker 3: I was just doing this fucking dumb ass redneck like
- 17:23Speaker 3: improv character, you know, and the dudes were all just like,
- 17:27Speaker 3: all right, sir, Yeah, that'll be seven hundred and fifty dollars.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Get the fuck out of our office.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And that's the story of how Connor kept from getting
- 17:36Speaker 2: kidnapped on the road.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, it was one of the dumbest fucking things
- 17:40Speaker 3: ever done, because I was just like, look, I know
- 17:42Speaker 3: this is stupid, but I gotta try.
- 17:45Speaker 2: There's another Let's skip ahead a little bit. I want
- 17:48Speaker 2: to talk about the story that I've always known Art
- 17:53Speaker 2: Bell for the most Yeah, from Coast to coast, am
- 17:56Speaker 2: because there is a pretty important one where him not
- 17:59Speaker 2: being critical of things really becomes an issue. But it
- 18:04Speaker 2: ain't this one. This story alleges that two Russian engineers
- 18:09Speaker 2: drilled a hole deep into the ground somewhere in Siberia,
- 18:13Speaker 2: and at some point they punctured a cavity, at which
- 18:16Speaker 2: point the heat becomes too intense for them to keep drilling.
- 18:20Speaker 2: But also they claim they hear screams coming from inside
- 18:25Speaker 2: the earth.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Yeah, we got open lines, hero, we got doctor evil
- 18:28Speaker 3: on the phone.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Yes, hello, Art, and there is a clip from.
- 18:33Speaker 3: This No, it's fucking weird shit dude.
- 18:35Speaker 2: And there's I think a long intro from Art Bell
- 18:37Speaker 2: so you can hear what he sounds like Xander Trotter presents.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Okay, Xander, I do like when just the first guy
- 18:44Speaker 3: finds the audio, puts it on YouTube and he gets
- 18:46Speaker 3: his Windows movie credits.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and I warn you this could scare you. Here's
- 18:53Speaker 1: the email. Dear Art Bell.
- 18:55Speaker 4: I just recently began listening to your radio show.
- 18:59Speaker 1: And could not leave that when you talked about the
- 19:01Speaker 1: Sounds from Hell tonight.
- 19:04Speaker 4: My uncle had told me this story a couple of
- 19:06Speaker 4: years ago, and I didn't believe them.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Like one of your listeners who discounted the story is
- 19:12Speaker 1: nothing more than just a religious newspaper.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Sounds like he's just telling a campfire story.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Digging of the whole and the hearing of the sounds
- 19:20Speaker 1: from Hell is very real. It did occur in Siberia.
- 19:26Speaker 1: My uncle collected videos and audio tapes and so forth
- 19:30Speaker 1: on the paranormal supernatural. He passed away fairly recently, but
- 19:35Speaker 1: he would have loved your show. You let me listen
- 19:38Speaker 1: to one of the audio tapes a policel Siberia, and
- 19:44Speaker 1: I copied it. You received his copy from a friend
- 19:47Speaker 1: who worked at the DBC.
- 19:51Speaker 4: It took me a while to find crack which is attatched?
- 19:55Speaker 4: Is that sound from my uncle's tapes?
- 19:58Speaker 3: Did you it's not? Isn't an old type?
- 20:01Speaker 4: Sounds? Are there?
- 20:02Speaker 2: Not that old?
- 20:03Speaker 1: It was very evident to send you this as the
- 20:06Speaker 1: sound bothers me to listen to. I'd suggest that if
- 20:09Speaker 1: you do play it on the program Warren listeners and.
- 20:12Speaker 3: This would be a great hip hop sketch.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Ye until I cut in thirty seconds while it plays.
- 20:19Speaker 4: It has always haunted me.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Should have been the.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Yeah it is true, you know, I for.
- 20:28Speaker 2: One, someone will steal that idea from wasn't.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Rick listening from Chicago?
- 20:33Speaker 3: Making verified on Twitter?
- 20:34Speaker 1: If I admit, yeah, they cleaned a better copy to
- 20:38Speaker 1: you here. You what you're about to hear is very disturbing, indeed,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and then.
- 20:45Speaker 3: And then the beat from New York State of Mind drops.
- 20:48Speaker 3: You know that's hell, everybody, Yeah, that's the sound of hell.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Sounds like there's a good one hundred hundred and fifty
- 21:03Speaker 2: people down there.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Yeah, But here's here's the problem. It was actually discovered
- 21:14Speaker 2: at one point that if you can believe it, that's
- 21:16Speaker 2: not Hell. What those were sound effects that were pieced
- 21:20Speaker 2: together from the soundtrack to an old movie.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean if.
- 21:24Speaker 2: There's old to Hell, it's the same thing as anything else.
- 21:27Speaker 2: If a portal to Hell opened on Earth, you wouldn't
- 21:31Speaker 2: hear about it on Coast to coast.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Yeah, like Art Bells and not get in Scuba. It's
- 21:34Speaker 3: like when people watch those ghost Hunter shows. I think
- 21:36Speaker 3: a comic had a bit about this, so I apologize,
- 21:38Speaker 3: But it's just like it would have been on the
- 21:40Speaker 3: news before, Like the AMC wouldn't sit on it for
- 21:43Speaker 3: six months while they edited it right and be like,
- 21:45Speaker 3: well we got the exclusive with the proof that there's ghosts, Like, yeah,
- 21:49Speaker 3: that would have been CNN's number one story for five years.
- 21:53Speaker 3: But there's another story that that plane is still missing.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Also life after Death confirmed.
- 21:59Speaker 4: Uh.
- 21:59Speaker 2: There's another really famous episode. It was a November nineteen
- 22:03Speaker 2: ninety six show in which Art Bell suggested that the
- 22:08Speaker 2: Hailbop comet was being followed by a UFO.
- 22:13Speaker 3: There was It's a Broken taylight on the comics.
- 22:16Speaker 2: There was an amateur astronomer named Chuck. There we go Chuck.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Oh hey, perfectly reasonable sounding name.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Fucking good old Chuck.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Chuck Shramik took a photo of the comic. Right, he's
- 22:29Speaker 2: Chuck has lost my Shrammick Shramic. That's not a great name.
- 22:32Speaker 3: What's when you're checking into a hotel under an alias
- 22:34Speaker 3: because you're, you know, gonna buy Aquila coke from sonya?
- 22:37Speaker 3: Uh and just we need a name, Chuck, last name.
- 22:41Speaker 3: She's a hammock as a Shramic, you know.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yeah. He claimed to see a large object following the comment.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Another guest to the show, Courtney Brown, a political science
- 22:52Speaker 2: professor at Emory University, claimed that observers working under him
- 22:56Speaker 2: had confirmed that the object was a UFO. Fuck. Would
- 23:00Speaker 2: they confirm that?
- 23:01Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 23:01Speaker 2: How do you like? Well, well, for sure it is,
- 23:03Speaker 2: you know, I sure don't know what that is.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Well, I mean by confirming that something is unidentified, is
- 23:07Speaker 3: not like that? Like, yep, we've confirmed that we don't
- 23:11Speaker 3: know what that is. Yeah, exactly.
- 23:12Speaker 2: I don't know what flavor of Monster Energy drink you're
- 23:16Speaker 2: drinking right now.
- 23:16Speaker 3: It's a U D unidentified drink. I was going to
- 23:22Speaker 3: do another initial, but I don't. I honestly don't even
- 23:24Speaker 3: know what flavor this is supposed to be. It's just
- 23:26Speaker 3: the white one, you.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Know, Yeah, the white can I prefer the orange course
- 23:30Speaker 2: light when you came in.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Oh no, that'd be funny if I just pulled that. Hey, Adam,
- 23:35Speaker 3: I got a new car and a problem.
- 23:39Speaker 2: So Bell ran with Brown's input until two scientists from
- 23:45Speaker 2: the University of Hawaii revealed that Brown had shown Bell
- 23:49Speaker 2: a doctored version of their own work and art. Bell
- 23:53Speaker 2: scrubbed his sight of the initial information about the UFO
- 23:56Speaker 2: and never had Brown back on. And that would have
- 23:59Speaker 2: all been, you know, just another case of misinformation if
- 24:03Speaker 2: not for the fact that on March nineteenth and twentieth
- 24:07Speaker 2: of nineteen ninety seven, Happy twenty first birthday to me,
- 24:11Speaker 2: the Heaven's Gate cult threw on a collective pair of
- 24:14Speaker 2: fresh Nikes and committed mass suicide. Wow. And members of
- 24:20Speaker 2: the group believe that the Earth itself would soon be destroyed,
- 24:23Speaker 2: and to save themselves meant ascending to the UFO alongside
- 24:27Speaker 2: the Comet, and to reach that UFO meant that they
- 24:31Speaker 2: must graduate, which was commit suicide. And the main Heaven's
- 24:36Speaker 2: Gate page seems to suggest that they took into account
- 24:40Speaker 2: that Bell disavowed his earlier claims of the UFO, saying
- 24:44Speaker 2: quote whether Hailbop has a companion or not is irrelevant
- 24:47Speaker 2: from our perspective. However, under the section connecting links, the
- 24:52Speaker 2: website creator still posts a now defunct link to the
- 24:56Speaker 2: art bell web page, as well as Chuck Schrammick's Bop
- 25:00Speaker 2: companion page, which leads to the big news here. Holy shit, Connor, Yeah,
- 25:05Speaker 2: the Heaven's Gate website is still online.
- 25:08Speaker 3: What's funny about me to this is that they're like, well,
- 25:11Speaker 3: the world's ending, but we're gonna pay for thirty years
- 25:13Speaker 3: of hosting, you know.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Like has someone just I want to know who's
- 25:17Speaker 2: keeping this thing up.
- 25:19Speaker 3: I missed when the Internet looked like this, like the
- 25:22Speaker 3: Geo Cities era.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a red alert flashing at the top. It
- 25:26Speaker 2: just it's a gift that says red alert.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and then the star background. I mean in terms
- 25:32Speaker 3: of like bidnes graphic design, they're not doing terribly. You know.
- 25:38Speaker 3: They get like the keyhole thing with the gate inside.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Like yeah, that's a nice image.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a nice that's you know those someone paid
- 25:45Speaker 3: for the photoshop ninety five.
- 25:47Speaker 2: But there is we're gonna out, I have to go against.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I said the word against because I was just blown
- 25:54Speaker 2: away by the fact that there's a link that says
- 25:57Speaker 2: our our position against suicide.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it feels like they were kind of pro well,
- 26:03Speaker 3: it's graduating, you know, suicide. Yeah, it's like if you
- 26:06Speaker 3: just eat bread outside the church, it's bread, but you
- 26:08Speaker 3: do it inside, it's communion, you know.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Right, how a member of the kingdom might appear. Oh shit,
- 26:14Speaker 2: it looks like a gray So we'll have to go
- 26:18Speaker 2: through that website at some point.
- 26:20Speaker 3: And yeah, no, that's pretty great.
- 26:22Speaker 2: I just glancing at it. See both Ruby Ridge and
- 26:26Speaker 2: Waco were mentioned, so it sounds like it's right up
- 26:28Speaker 2: our alley.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Oh for sure.
- 26:30Speaker 2: But I thought that was really interesting that that website
- 26:34Speaker 2: is still online.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Alan Hale and someone pointed out, I think the space
- 26:38Speaker 3: gym web space website. There's a few of those relics
- 26:41Speaker 3: out there.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Ye're kind of cool, and someone's got to still be
- 26:44Speaker 2: paying for that, or maybe they just paid for it
- 26:46Speaker 2: for forever.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Maybe they just got some crazy like like fucking like
- 26:50Speaker 3: dot com boom era hosting deal, you know, yeah, like
- 26:53Speaker 3: that might be a me Honestly, if like there's I
- 26:55Speaker 3: would like, you know, personally crowdfund the seven hundred dollars
- 26:58Speaker 3: it would take to just be like, let's have an
- 26:59Speaker 3: archive of this. We'll just keep the domain, like you know, yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 3: some people can remember, like hey, yeah, people kill themselves
- 27:06Speaker 3: for uh, you know, for weird commet Theory's like maybe
- 27:09Speaker 3: a bad move.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Alan Hale, one of the two astronomers who discovered hailbop
- 27:13Speaker 2: in nineteen ninety five, called out Bell specifically in a
- 27:16Speaker 2: speech at the second World Skeptics Conference in Heidelberg, Germany.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Dude, you go to Skepticon. The after party was measured
- 27:25Speaker 3: and reasonable. Oh man, there was girls there with free
- 27:30Speaker 3: What a boractees?
- 27:31Speaker 2: You know, what a boring fucking conference.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Yeah, what are you going as for skeptic Con? It's like, oh, dude,
- 27:37Speaker 3: I got this sick Uri Geller cosplay, like I'm gonna
- 27:40Speaker 3: I'm gonna whip out, you know, just a.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Bunch of people who don't believe anything.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, just a bunch of people like ah, just.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Like what do you even like what's on display at
- 27:52Speaker 2: a skeptics con?
- 27:53Speaker 3: You just line up and like pad the world's largest
- 27:56Speaker 3: back padding ring.
- 27:57Speaker 2: You know, so art Bell. He retired from Coast to
- 28:01Speaker 2: Coast in twenty ten and was succeeded by George Norri
- 28:06Speaker 2: and that lasted for a little while. He wrote a
- 28:08Speaker 2: few books. One of them was called The Quickening Today's
- 28:12Speaker 2: Trends Tomorrow's World, and in nineteen ninety nine he co
- 28:17Speaker 2: wrote with Whitley Streiber the book The Coming Global Superstorm,
- 28:22Speaker 2: which was adapted into the movie The Day After Tomorrow,
- 28:24Speaker 2: which I had no idea.
- 28:26Speaker 3: A little a little bit of cheddar for the grand kids.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Not bad.
- 28:29Speaker 2: I went and saw that shit in theaters.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Is it good?
- 28:32Speaker 2: It's dumb. There's a lot of junk science in it,
- 28:35Speaker 2: but it's fun to look at. Yeah. Like it's about
- 28:38Speaker 2: freezing over in a matter of days. Oh, okay, it's
- 28:41Speaker 2: and Dennis Quaid is the lead, renowned action star Dennis Quaid.
- 28:45Speaker 3: Yeah, man, the fucking when you want gravitas in your.
- 28:50Speaker 2: So yeah, like we said a little bit. Oh. Also
- 28:52Speaker 2: two thousand and eight, Art Bell was inducted into the
- 28:55Speaker 2: National Radio Hall of Fame.
- 28:57Speaker 3: It was I was used to listen to AM radio
- 28:59Speaker 3: in the car often. I was like, when I first
- 29:01Speaker 3: moved out to LA and there's a guy who was
- 29:03Speaker 3: like I got nominated for a Marconi. I was like,
- 29:06Speaker 3: what the fucking He's like, that's like the Emmys for
- 29:08Speaker 3: like radio, and it's like your biggest It's like he's
- 29:10Speaker 3: like the personality of the year for like the Marconi Awards.
- 29:12Speaker 3: I was like, this is like the biggest award in
- 29:13Speaker 3: radio and I've never heard of it. Like that's such
- 29:16Speaker 3: a bummer.
- 29:16Speaker 4: You know.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I've heard of Marconi. But if you
- 29:20Speaker 2: had asked me the name of the biggest award for
- 29:23Speaker 2: radio stations mm hmmm, I would have had no clue. Okay,
- 29:26Speaker 2: like I don't know what the Emmy like. Now I
- 29:28Speaker 2: know it's the market.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, no, I know it's the Marconi's. But I
- 29:30Speaker 3: remember just like I think that about stand up comedy,
- 29:33Speaker 3: where it's just like this is such like a fucking
- 29:35Speaker 3: it's like the twelfth like art form, you know. It's
- 29:37Speaker 3: like there's like sculpture is probably edging us out at times.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no real awards show for comedy.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Comedy Central tried to do that, but it was I
- 29:46Speaker 3: think it was kind of clearly just like who's got
- 29:48Speaker 3: a new Comedy Central show coming out?
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah they win, you know, yeah, yeah, there it's one.
- 29:53Speaker 3: I guess the Mark Twain Award.
- 29:54Speaker 2: You know, I don't even know what that is.
- 29:56Speaker 3: That's like the every year they give like the Mark
- 29:57Speaker 3: Twain Award.
- 29:58Speaker 2: That's how'm not racist I am and even Twain out
- 30:02Speaker 2: of my head.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Yeah, dude, I don't. I don't acknowledge he used the
- 30:04Speaker 3: N word too much. So I think Eddie Edie Murphy
- 30:06Speaker 3: actually kind of did a stand upset when he got
- 30:08Speaker 3: his like awards, so it was kind of cool. Seddie
- 30:09Speaker 3: Murphy does stand up again. He was funny. Oh wow,
- 30:11Speaker 3: doing some Bill Cosby shit, you know. Yeah, yeah, so.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Yeah, what was Eddie Murphy on where they were? Was
- 30:17Speaker 2: he on SNL? Yeah? It was the SNL like a
- 30:21Speaker 2: one of the reunion specials. Oh yeah, the forty one,
- 30:24Speaker 2: and they were like, is Eddie Murphy gonna do stand up?
- 30:26Speaker 2: He did not?
- 30:26Speaker 3: He did not know. Yeah, fucking yeah. That was the
- 30:28Speaker 3: one where they had Kanye on and he threw out
- 30:30Speaker 3: his voice. Oh yeah, he was so bummed out. I
- 30:32Speaker 3: was like, oh no, poor Kanye, because it was really
- 30:35Speaker 3: cool looking like it was like a great performance, but
- 30:36Speaker 3: he just had this fuck up voice.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Yeah. So let's talk about some of the criticism of
- 30:41Speaker 2: art Bell, Like we mentioned earlier in the episode. He
- 30:44Speaker 2: takes a different approach to conspiracy theories. He doesn't really
- 30:48Speaker 2: take a side so much as he just lets people
- 30:52Speaker 2: talk and says, oh, yeah, that's interesting, and doesn't there's
- 30:56Speaker 2: no critique, there's nothing critical about it. He doesn't really
- 30:59Speaker 2: question anybody.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Yeah, He's just like, well if And that's kind of
- 31:02Speaker 3: my rule. When I listened to Coast to Coast, I
- 31:04Speaker 3: am is like, until I get back from Irvine, I
- 31:07Speaker 3: believe the ghost service, you know, I.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Just enjoy it like that. But I think that a
- 31:12Speaker 2: lot of the criticism around him centers on the fact
- 31:15Speaker 2: that a lot of people who listen to it don't
- 31:17Speaker 2: think of it like that. A lot of people just
- 31:19Speaker 2: hear it as oh, well, this is news, and I
- 31:22Speaker 2: believe this all am. And if you get in too
- 31:25Speaker 2: much of a rut of just listening to it every day,
- 31:29Speaker 2: eventually it's gonna it's gonna take hold. And this is
- 31:34Speaker 2: in an article for the Committee of Skeptical Inquiry, which
- 31:38Speaker 2: also sounds like a fucking party, Thomas Jenoni writes, does
- 31:42Speaker 2: Bell fear that he may be contributing to the dumbing
- 31:45Speaker 2: down of America by refusing to be critical of his
- 31:48Speaker 2: paranormal topics hardly. Although he acknowledges that there is indeed
- 31:53Speaker 2: a dumbing down, Bell scoffs at suggestions that he bears
- 31:57Speaker 2: any responsibility. He just us as the paranormal because, as
- 32:02Speaker 2: he says, it's what people want, and if it contributes
- 32:05Speaker 2: to a population increasingly unable to critically evaluate his show's topics,
- 32:10Speaker 2: it's not my responsibility. As his refrain, Bell doesn't seem
- 32:15Speaker 2: to care.
- 32:16Speaker 3: That is the thing you forget when you look at
- 32:18Speaker 3: something like, man, isn't this stupid? That there are people
- 32:20Speaker 3: who are like, oh no, it's not stupid at all.
- 32:22Speaker 3: They're definitely is my control serum and you're fucking tab water.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it helped Trump win the election.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Yeah yeah basically, And it's like yeah, it's like this
- 32:30Speaker 3: is funny. It's like a you know, like a like
- 32:32Speaker 3: a reesis. It's like, yo, this is great if you
- 32:34Speaker 3: have one every you know, three weeks. But if you
- 32:37Speaker 3: if you have there're people who just every time they
- 32:39Speaker 3: go to the grocery store they get a big king
- 32:40Speaker 3: size and it's like, yeah, you just you can't be
- 32:43Speaker 3: responsible to use this, you know, like how it should
- 32:46Speaker 3: like it's just like oh, yeah, listen to these dipshits. Yeah,
- 32:49Speaker 3: is what the what it should be taken as?
- 32:51Speaker 2: But right, it should be taken as entertainment. Yeah, yeah,
- 32:54Speaker 2: And that was I went on a tie rade not
- 32:57Speaker 2: too long ago about Facebook and how if that's going
- 33:00Speaker 2: to be Facebook's argument that hey, we're not a news site,
- 33:03Speaker 2: We're like an entertainment and friendship site. Yeah, well then
- 33:06Speaker 2: you got to put a banner on your site that
- 33:08Speaker 2: says that, yeah, it needs to be really clear that
- 33:11Speaker 2: everything here is just for entertainment purposes and should not
- 33:13Speaker 2: be construed as news.
- 33:15Speaker 3: But even then you put that banner, if no one's
- 33:16Speaker 3: going to read it, Yeah, seriously, they're.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Just gonna think it's a government plot to hide the truth.
- 33:21Speaker 3: There's like if you think of all the genies you
- 33:23Speaker 3: can't get back in the bottle, and like that might
- 33:25Speaker 3: be the biggest one. Is it's like the fucking inability
- 33:27Speaker 3: to discern like an objective news source. You see Elon
- 33:31Speaker 3: musk new thing where he's like, I want to start
- 33:33Speaker 3: a webisod where you can like rate, like vote on
- 33:35Speaker 3: the credibility of journalists and everyone will have like a score.
- 33:38Speaker 3: And it's like that's just going to turn into like
- 33:41Speaker 3: it's just going to turn into like a like when
- 33:43Speaker 3: complex does like who dropped hot a shoe of twenty eighteen? Yeah,
- 33:46Speaker 3: and you're just like, oh man, whoever, whoever's got the
- 33:48Speaker 3: most retweets, you know, like, lo, the bron guys are
- 33:50Speaker 3: gonna buff his ugly shoe even though it sucked or
- 33:52Speaker 3: whatever it is.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Yeah, any internet system like that that's ever been created,
- 33:56Speaker 2: someone finds out how to game it. Oh e.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Actually it's it's like it's any incentive people find out
- 34:02Speaker 3: how to game, you know, right. It's like that like
- 34:03Speaker 3: that chapter in Freakonolage where this guy is just like, oh,
- 34:05Speaker 3: every time I'll give my daughter a chocolate bar, of
- 34:08Speaker 3: a time she shits in the toilet and then she
- 34:10Speaker 3: just like would go drop two like little fucking things
- 34:13Speaker 3: a pee, Wait ten minutes, go drop a little more pe.
- 34:15Speaker 3: You know, she immediately like found a way to abuse it.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Like that's just how it goes, you.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Know, right. And that's kind of the argument people have
- 34:24Speaker 2: had against Art Bell is that he doesn't really make
- 34:27Speaker 2: a distinction between entertainment and news. He just presents.
- 34:32Speaker 3: Yea there in the same bucket.
- 34:34Speaker 2: And this is another quote from Robert Baker, who was
- 34:38Speaker 2: also writing for the Committee of Skeptical Inquiry or CSI,
- 34:42Speaker 2: and he was writing about the book The Quickening.
- 34:45Speaker 3: We've long known that Art my mom's basement.
- 34:49Speaker 2: We've long known that Art Bell, night Radio's paranoid propagandist,
- 34:53Speaker 2: knows how to rave and rant. What we didn't know
- 34:56Speaker 2: was whether or not he could read and write.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Damn. You know that's harsh. You know, you know he's
- 35:00Speaker 3: harsh when he's got the alliteration.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that shit. He also wrote, just as he does
- 35:05Speaker 2: in his nightly radio datribes Bell in this word assembly
- 35:10Speaker 2: is about to terrorize anyone naive enough to read him.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Each chapter of this book book in quotes, begins with
- 35:18Speaker 2: a little story.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Damn shade story. That's how you throw shade when you
- 35:22Speaker 3: would fucking write articles. Who's like, you're like sarcastic quotes, Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Whose intent is to frighten one into believing that human
- 35:29Speaker 2: race has had it. The best that can be said
- 35:32Speaker 2: about The Quickening is that it is indeed sickening.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Oh man, that's not.
- 35:37Speaker 2: I feel like you could come up with a better slam.
- 35:39Speaker 3: This is like if they had like a roast battle.
- 35:41Speaker 3: It like the Pulitzer like a conference you know.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Where Yeah, it is indeed sickening.
- 35:47Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, like old wide old like fuddy duddy ass
- 35:51Speaker 3: shade is so funny to me, you know.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Yeah, because it rhymed. It's just that much. Yeah yeah.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Yeah. And well just because the guy's got to tie
- 35:59Speaker 3: in his about the author picture, you're like, wow, man,
- 36:01Speaker 3: he's pissed.
- 36:04Speaker 2: So the thing about the Committee of Skeptical Inquiry is
- 36:09Speaker 2: they're kind of criticizing art Bell for not doing a
- 36:14Speaker 2: thing that they're also not doing, which is approaching this
- 36:18Speaker 2: with like taking these stories with a grain of salt,
- 36:21Speaker 2: like they want Art Bell to be really explicit about that,
- 36:25Speaker 2: but they're not doing that. Like they're taking these things
- 36:28Speaker 2: really fucking seriously and writing these angry letters and books
- 36:33Speaker 2: and shit about it. But it's like, how about you relax? Also,
- 36:36Speaker 2: like the thing about this, I don't know, Well that's
- 36:40Speaker 2: the thing. The Heaven's Gate thing is the only one
- 36:43Speaker 2: where it's like yeah, yeah, yeah, maybe he should have
- 36:45Speaker 2: been a little more skeptical.
- 36:46Speaker 3: But it's I don't know, they got a point, you know,
- 36:49Speaker 3: they don't not have a point. Yeah, And it's like
- 36:51Speaker 3: where where do you draw the line? How do you
- 36:53Speaker 3: draw it? How do you make it clear that it's
- 36:56Speaker 3: just bullshit while still making it fun and still getting
- 36:58Speaker 3: the people on to talk about it. Is the entertainment
- 37:01Speaker 3: value you get from hearing a woman who thinks she's
- 37:03Speaker 3: a psychic worth the fact that there are some people
- 37:05Speaker 3: that actually believe this and go spend their fucking, you know,
- 37:09Speaker 3: government fixed income checks on crystals that you order in
- 37:12Speaker 3: the mail. It's like, I don't know where you fucking
- 37:14Speaker 3: I don't know where you take a stand exactly.
- 37:17Speaker 2: And then do you do? You have to take on
- 37:19Speaker 2: stuff like the weekly World News too, which like a
- 37:23Speaker 2: lot of times that's bat boy has been discovered in
- 37:26Speaker 2: a cave. But then it's also sometimes here's a picture
- 37:29Speaker 2: of Hillary Clinton meeting with aliens. Yeah, and most of
- 37:32Speaker 2: us see that and we're like, oh, that's so stupid.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, But then.
- 37:35Speaker 2: There's some people who are going to read that and go,
- 37:38Speaker 2: I don't know, man, I saw this thing about Hillary
- 37:40Speaker 2: Clinton meeting with aliens. Yeah, it's a couple of weeks now,
- 37:42Speaker 2: so I don't know if I can vote for and
- 37:43Speaker 2: her emails so I don't know if I can vote for.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Wellah, And then it's also like you know, like the
- 37:48Speaker 3: people that emphasize the importance of freedom of speech are
- 37:51Speaker 3: often the most like, I don't know, kind of undesirable
- 37:56Speaker 3: types of folks, you know. But it's also like that
- 37:59Speaker 3: is kind of like the cool thing about America that remains.
- 38:03Speaker 3: It's like, you don't have that English, so they can
- 38:05Speaker 3: slap a din notis on shit if they don't need
- 38:07Speaker 3: to talk about it. Like it's all just kind of
- 38:08Speaker 3: like kind of but like be cool, all right, don't
- 38:11Speaker 3: fuck over a you know, Comcast money too much and
- 38:14Speaker 3: you can just say, you can say whatever you want
- 38:15Speaker 3: about her outfit, but let's not talk about what you did.
- 38:17Speaker 3: And you know Pakistan, and.
- 38:19Speaker 2: That's happening right now in England. Oh yeah, story that's
- 38:21Speaker 2: going around that the English, the British government has just
- 38:24Speaker 2: kind of slapped a don't talk about this notice on it.
- 38:27Speaker 2: And what's interesting to me is I saw someone tweet
- 38:30Speaker 2: about it, and I get the sense that this journalist
- 38:33Speaker 2: who's reporting on it would be kind of like on
- 38:37Speaker 2: our right, huh, where he's one of those types. So
- 38:40Speaker 2: I saw a tweet and this person was like, do
- 38:44Speaker 2: I care that this whatever the guy's name is was
- 38:47Speaker 2: sent to jail? For reporting twice on a story that
- 38:50Speaker 2: the government said not to report on. No, I don't.
- 38:53Speaker 2: And it's like, all right, don't you ever say another
- 38:55Speaker 2: fucking thing about the United States, Yeah, being oppressive in
- 38:59Speaker 2: any way? Yeah, if you're okay with your government going nope,
- 39:02Speaker 2: nobody can report on that story or you'll go to
- 39:05Speaker 2: jail and we're the oppressive ones.
- 39:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Well, it's like that was pretty fucking oppressive.
- 39:11Speaker 3: How do you like balance your your like empathy for
- 39:13Speaker 3: your like like you know, like you want people to
- 39:16Speaker 3: like not I don't want anyone to think that fucking
- 39:18Speaker 3: crystals are gonna make them feel better.
- 39:20Speaker 2: You know, I don't.
- 39:21Speaker 3: I just is like just someone who hates the idea
- 39:23Speaker 3: of like the energy that is expended to have like
- 39:26Speaker 3: you know, whatever these dollars are worth like wasted on
- 39:29Speaker 3: that that could have gone to something that actually might
- 39:31Speaker 3: you know, make your life better, the world better, your
- 39:34Speaker 3: community better, about you being a more productive citizen. It's like,
- 39:37Speaker 3: how do you balance that with like the idea of
- 39:38Speaker 3: wanting a libertarian free exchange of ideas, you know, and
- 39:42Speaker 3: how do you like and it's just like there's the
- 39:43Speaker 3: answer is like no one's it's not gonna get better.
- 39:45Speaker 3: People aren't gonna be more discerning with how they get
- 39:47Speaker 3: their information, you know. It's it's like if you shut
- 39:50Speaker 3: it down, that only makes it more appealing. It's like,
- 39:53Speaker 3: what did you think I think? Do you think God
- 39:54Speaker 3: saved the Queen would have been number one? If they
- 39:56Speaker 3: were like, nah, fuck you, you can sell howmever everybody wants,
- 39:59Speaker 3: you know. It's like it's like that's what makes it cool.
- 40:02Speaker 3: That's why smoking cigarettes is still like, oh wow, that
- 40:04Speaker 3: guy's cool. Like it's like that you're not supposed to
- 40:07Speaker 3: do that. Yeah, So it's like, I don't know the
- 40:09Speaker 3: fucking what's the answer there is? In one like we're doomed.
- 40:12Speaker 2: It's it's kind of a conundrum with the internet too.
- 40:15Speaker 2: We talked on this week's episode of Unpopular Opinion. It
- 40:19Speaker 2: was about mass shootings and a lot of it was
- 40:22Speaker 2: about in cells and like that whole and we're doing
- 40:27Speaker 2: an entire episode about it in a couple of weeks exactly.
- 40:31Speaker 2: And the thing is like, there is definitely a problem
- 40:36Speaker 2: with those groups, which a lot of them started out
- 40:38Speaker 2: as just dudes who were like socially awkward and could
- 40:42Speaker 2: not find dates, just trying to find some support in
- 40:45Speaker 2: the community to talk to, and then all these other
- 40:48Speaker 2: radical type of elements come in and go, oh, but
- 40:50Speaker 2: also maybe it's because we should be allowed to rape
- 40:53Speaker 2: women and own them as property. And they're basically getting
- 40:56Speaker 2: radicalized and a lot of people recognize that. But what's
- 41:00Speaker 2: the what's the solution there? Do we crack down on
- 41:03Speaker 2: the Internet. Yeah, yeah, like that's what we've been doing.
- 41:05Speaker 2: We shut these sits down, and then they just go
- 41:07Speaker 2: to the dark web, yeah, where they can't be shut down.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Well, yeah, this is like like Reddit was like had
- 41:13Speaker 3: like a suburb I think called creep shots, whereas basically
- 41:16Speaker 3: like guys taking you know, candid photos of attractive women
- 41:19Speaker 3: in public, you know, like oh yeah, you can see
- 41:21Speaker 3: you know, in between her skirt here while she's a line,
- 41:23Speaker 3: you know, at the DMV or whatever, and they get
- 41:25Speaker 3: crack down on that. You know, it's fucked up. It's
- 41:26Speaker 3: very fucked up, right, And then like but it's like
- 41:28Speaker 3: that then then then that just goes to the dark web,
- 41:32Speaker 3: Like you're saying, that just gets more like oh, like
- 41:34Speaker 3: while I was there, I figured like I could probably
- 41:37Speaker 3: see you know, this thing I've always kind of secretly
- 41:39Speaker 3: wanted this year it's like this is no longer scratching
- 41:41Speaker 3: the itch of like I want to come and feel guilty.
- 41:44Speaker 3: So we find something even worse than that, and it's like,
- 41:46Speaker 3: should you shut the community down? Of course, yeah, that's fuck.
- 41:48Speaker 3: You're violating people's privacy. That's disgusting. But it's like it's
- 41:51Speaker 3: a hydra really like every time you fucking take something down,
- 41:54Speaker 3: it's like, well, okay, we'll just do it evil er.
- 41:56Speaker 3: Like all those people you banned from Twitter are on gab.
- 41:58Speaker 3: Now you've seen gab. Gab was like alright, Twitter, you know.
- 42:01Speaker 3: So it's like it's basically where like Mi low and
- 42:03Speaker 3: kind of that kind of class goes, you know, and uh,
- 42:06Speaker 3: it's just like even less of an like even less
- 42:09Speaker 3: of an exchange of ideas, you know, even like there's
- 42:12Speaker 3: no chance you're gonna win anybody back, you know, there's
- 42:14Speaker 3: no there's not even like a bunch of people with
- 42:16Speaker 3: you know, someone quote tweets you and it owns you
- 42:19Speaker 3: and it gets it blows up, and you don't even
- 42:21Speaker 3: get the shame the people you don't even the guy
- 42:24Speaker 3: doesn't even get to see like, oh, one hundred thousand
- 42:26Speaker 3: people retweeted me being a dumb ass, Like, maybe I'm
- 42:28Speaker 3: fucking wrong here. I doubt how little that happens. I
- 42:30Speaker 3: think that probably doesn't happen often. But like there's no
- 42:33Speaker 3: counterbalance to it, right, The icon for gabs literally a frog,
- 42:36Speaker 3: like go go check it out. It's fucking some upsetting ship, dude.
- 42:39Speaker 2: And when you push stuff like deeper and deeper into
- 42:43Speaker 2: the Internet. I read an article when I was researching
- 42:47Speaker 2: the in Cells episode that we're doing in a couple
- 42:49Speaker 2: of weeks where they pointed out, well, these communities do
- 42:52Speaker 2: lose followers each time they get pushed further and further in.
- 42:57Speaker 2: And that's true, but also you know that people that
- 43:00Speaker 2: follow it every step of the way, Oh yeah, are
- 43:03Speaker 2: the really fucking rabid, adamant followers and that movement and
- 43:09Speaker 2: them having to hide in a different spot every time
- 43:12Speaker 2: is just gonna make them more fucking radical. Oh yeah.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Like I in my own life, I used to go
- 43:16Speaker 3: on four chan R nine K and it's the stipulation
- 43:20Speaker 3: of this board is that there's an algorithm that stops
- 43:25Speaker 3: you from posting the same text twice so once someone's
- 43:28Speaker 3: so this is designed to make it a more i
- 43:30Speaker 3: don't know, meaningful discussion or whatever, So you can't just
- 43:33Speaker 3: have the same kind of like oh like you're gay,
- 43:35Speaker 3: ops gay or whatever. So and this would be like
- 43:38Speaker 3: largely a board full of people talking about like being
- 43:40Speaker 3: bad with women in a fairly benign way for the
- 43:42Speaker 3: most part. I mean there was ugly shit for sure,
- 43:44Speaker 3: but it was just like awkward teens just you know, hey,
- 43:47Speaker 3: what kind of angry do you like? You know what
- 43:48Speaker 3: you know this is? I listened to this song, well
- 43:50Speaker 3: I think about how I'm too much of a bitch
- 43:52Speaker 3: to ask anybody out. And then they deleted that board
- 43:54Speaker 3: and they made a mirror of it and then different
- 43:56Speaker 3: way called four Chawn or something, and it was just
- 43:58Speaker 3: like some of the RNNKP went over there and I
- 43:59Speaker 3: used to go over there, and that one was more ugly.
- 44:01Speaker 3: That was more concentrated, but distilled. It was cold brew
- 44:04Speaker 3: for un you know, and like you think of this
- 44:06Speaker 3: happening over and over again, like you're just really whittling
- 44:09Speaker 3: it down to the people that are going to be radical, right,
- 44:11Speaker 3: and it's like should you shut it down? Like fortune
- 44:13Speaker 3: of the darn on keateboard wasn't like no one was
- 44:15Speaker 3: plotting like school shootings or anything, but it's like you
- 44:17Speaker 3: see that kind of effect.
- 44:19Speaker 2: You know, maybe we should just turn AM radio over
- 44:22Speaker 2: to all of those people.
- 44:23Speaker 3: Oh and just let them talk to themselves.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Let AM radio be dominated by that faction of the Internet.
- 44:29Speaker 2: The rest of us will take FM radio and the
- 44:31Speaker 2: Internet can just go away forever because it's a cancer
- 44:34Speaker 2: that's destroying us. Yeah, I mean, like it really happens
- 44:38Speaker 2: in a way that I can still make a living. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 44:41Speaker 2: I mean I want that.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Obviously, We'll just do the movie podcasts and ship, you know,
- 44:44Speaker 3: just we'll keep it unpopular opinion. We'll go back to
- 44:46Speaker 3: being about like gay rap lyrics, you.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Know, exactly.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Yeah, but yeah, it is. It is like one of
- 44:51Speaker 3: these things where it's like, I mean, this is what's
- 44:53Speaker 3: the end? Is the unibomber, right, you know, like what
- 44:56Speaker 3: do you do?
- 44:57Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 44:57Speaker 2: So that's the basically the criticism of round Art Bell
- 45:01Speaker 2: is is there enough criticism or critical thought going into
- 45:06Speaker 2: what he's doing. He also had beef with William Cooper,
- 45:11Speaker 2: just like Alex Jones did. Who's William Cooper again? Reminder,
- 45:15Speaker 2: he's the guy who wrote Behold a Pale Horse, Okay,
- 45:17Speaker 2: and the one who had the falling out with Alex Jones. Yes,
- 45:20Speaker 2: he basically said he was a misinformation agent, gotcha. Yeah,
- 45:24Speaker 2: And he says the same thing about Art Bell. He
- 45:28Speaker 2: was writing about the book The Quickening, and he described
- 45:31Speaker 2: it as one of the most blatant, in your face
- 45:33Speaker 2: pieces of New World Order propaganda that I have ever seen. Damn.
- 45:39Speaker 2: At one point, Bell did return to the airwaves after
- 45:42Speaker 2: he was dissatisfied with the direction George Nori was taking
- 45:46Speaker 2: the show He wants, a show called Midnight in the Desert.
- 45:50Speaker 2: There's an episode that Joe Rogan was on.
- 45:52Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, yeah, because that was kind of his like
- 45:54Speaker 3: like his like Jay Leno's garage where he's like, oh yeah,
- 45:57Speaker 3: I actually didn't want to stop being on the radio,
- 45:59Speaker 3: you know.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Yeah yeah. And Art Bell sadly passed away on Friday the.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Thirteenth, Hell yeah, on Brand.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Twenty eighteen in April. And so that's the Art Bell
- 46:12Speaker 2: story and that that wraps up Conspiracy Theorist Month. Next month,
- 46:16Speaker 2: we're doing Sports Month.
- 46:18Speaker 3: Oh hell yeah, the ones you know, yeah, this is
- 46:21Speaker 3: where it's like that probably did happen, you know, yeah.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, We're we're kicking off Sports Month with a
- 46:27Speaker 2: theory of my own.
- 46:28Speaker 3: Oh interesting, okay, which.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Is that Baseball manufactured the steroid scandal to cover up
- 46:35Speaker 2: there amphetamine scandal and to discredit Barry Bonds.
- 46:39Speaker 3: Interesting. Yeah, okay, I'm fucking looking forward to that.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Uh So, that's what we got coming up next week.
- 46:46Speaker 2: This is a pay Treon only episode, I do believe.
- 46:53Speaker 4: Mm.
- 46:54Speaker 2: So you don't have to subscribe to anything, baby.
- 46:56Speaker 3: You're already doing it.
- 46:57Speaker 4: You're already in.
- 46:58Speaker 2: The subscribing.
